The product, in the report: This is a HP 14 Notebook series laptop. It’s black
My 88 year old mother was using her laptop in her dining room on a wood table with a table doily under. She was checking her email and her bank account and the unit was plugged in. She got up from the table and walked away but heard a ‘hissing sound’ (her hearing is not good, just for the record) and she turned around and saw smoke, flame and the smoke detectors went off. She didn’t panic but pulled the plug out of the back of the unit, grabbed the screen to carry to the front door, down the steps and laid it on the concrete sidewalk. Immediately, she sent me and two siblings a text to tell us what happened but she was okay. She then followed with several pictures, which I will attach.

The Product caught on fire. The HP Pavillion laptop was not plugged in, and was not being used. It was closed and set aside. I heard a hissing noise and saw smoke and flames. The product, in the report: HP OmniStudio All-in-One
Please include details such as: What happened that made you want to report? The top-heavy AIO HP Omni Studio tipped forward and landed on the mouse (incl w/ the unit) shattering the screen on impact. My 9 yo was attempting to plug in the head phones on the back of the AIO. All the access points and buttons (incl the on/off button) are on the back of the unit. Its unusually top heavy compared to typical laptops or desk tops. Its foreseeable that a consumer would need to either turn or tilt the entire unit to access any functionality, such as plugging in head phones. The product design is extremely dangerous. In addition, there are ZERO warnings or labels notifying consumer that the entire top heavy unit will fall forward. The stand the top heavy unit is balanced on, does not accommodate for tilting, pivoting to access the back of the unit. If you move the unit the stand base moves vs securing and accounting for foreseeable movements. The base thus catapults the top heavy unit once it begins to tilt into an almost whip motion . What type of product(s) were being used? HP OmniStudio AIO. Who was using the product(s)? How were the product(s) being used? My son was attempting to plug in head phones. The plug is located on the back of the AIO. Were there any injuries that happened or may have happened while using the product? The negligent infliction of emotional distress. How did any injuries occur? Observing the unit tilting onto my 9yr old, I lunged to catch the unit before it landed on his head. It hit the mouse instead. It was extremely distressing for my 9 yr old, myself and my 11 yr old son. This is a dangerous top heavy product balanced on a stick!

The product, in the report: HP Laptop Env2 fa0047nr
Computer has burnt out 4 different power supplies. Manufacturer states there’s nothing wrong with the computer, I just got it back to just destroy another charger.
Manufacturer also will not reach out to you to put a report in, despite my request. Nor do they want to take ownership of the problem at hand.
Product is still within warranty.
UPDATED ON 6/18/2025: [The primary concern is that the power supply is overheating to the point of failure, where it appears the internal fuse is being triggered or blown. This is not typical behavior and strongly suggests a current overdraw, likely originating from the laptop’s USB port or motherboard circuitry.
What’s especially alarming is the risk this poses—not just to the power supply, but to the safety and integrity of the entire system. Repeated overheating and electrical strain could lead to permanent hardware damage, electrical shorting, or even pose a fire hazard if left unaddressed.
This issue demands immediate attention, as continued use in this state may result in catastrophic failure of the motherboard, battery, or other critical components.
All of which HP has openly failed to address, even when they had the laptop in for inspection. Despite the multiple failed power supplies.]

The product, in the report: HP Dragonfly G4 Notebook computer
In mid-April 2024, I purchased an HP Dragonfly G4 notebook computer. It is used only by me, a retiree, for checking email and paying bills. From the day that I started using the computer, it was behaving very strangely. It would turn itself off randomly as if the power had dropped. Sometimes I had to wait 5-10 minutes to restart it. At night, I would shut it down, and would see the shutting down message on the screen. In the morning, I would find it on? I am the only person in the house and I knew I shut it down properly. Finally, in early October, the computer turned itself off and I could not restart it. I had used it for only five months on an occasional basis. The computer was still under warranty. I went back and forth with HP for about a month. I was unwilling to send the computer in for repair because there was my personal information on the hard drive. Since I could not turn it on, I couldnt remove / secure my information. I told HP I would send the computer in for repair if I could remove/keep the hard drive with my info on it. They agreed and send me a video. I previously worked on computers in my career. When I opened the cover, I could readily see that there was a thermal event, as evidenced by charring on the connection from the battery to the board. This could well as caused a fire or explosion in my home. I know from my professional experience that once this happens it is virtually impossible to repair the computer because other components of the computer are damaged and weakened. Often a technician cannot see or diagnose all the damage and the computer will have continuous problems even after repair. I told HP what I had found and asked for a refund. They refused. So, I paid $1100 plus tax for a useless computer. In addition, in my many interactions with HP, I noticed they were opening service cases and immediately closing them, even though the issue was unresolved. I am sure this improves their internal statistics. The company is totally unconcerned with the quality and safety of their products. Prior to this computer, I had an HP laptop and it lasted only two years. There was a problem with the touchpad sticking. Many of the internal components in HP computers are cheaply made in China. I will never buy another HP product again.

The product, in the report: HP ENVY 360 Convertible 15m-bp1xx
HP Envy x360 laptop. A known design flaw with a hinge component breaks, shattering the laptop’s screen with a great force, sending glass flying unexpectedly. HP has known about this flaw on their devices, due to other reports, and have not offered a good solution to repair for a reasonable price or a recall on the product when it is very clearly their faulty design. When using my laptop this morning, I went to barely adjust my screen when it popped and send glass shards flying - some hitting my arm and neck - I’m still finding glass shards in my bed and on the floor after a through cleaning. This was completely unexpected and I’m very lucky it didn’t shatter in my face. I’ve had this laptop for several years, but haven’t used it very often until more recently. It’s never been dropped, I’ve never handled it roughly, there was no reason for this hinge to break other than their poor choice of material.

On February 26, 2023, I purchased a 2022 HP Pavilion 17.3-inch IPS FHD Laptop via Amazon.com (order # [REDACTED]) for $783.34. The online order advertised as “new” on Amazon.com was fulfilled by [REDACTED] While configuring and loading software on the device, HP notified via e-mail that the factory warranty for this device expired January 24, 2023 (a month before the actual purchased). For the next few months, it would take several attempts at depressing the power button to turn on the laptop. In September the device would not turn on at all. On September 9, 2023, the laptop was taken to [REDACTED] (an authorized HP Service & Repair shop) located in [REDACTED] for evaluation and repair. [REDACTED] diagnosis stating the motherboard was bad, the power system was faulty (bulging battery. This is the first time I have ever received a defective item purchased from HP via Amazon.com. I would have never expected the HP and Amazon to provide a device that did not work properly, had sever hardware issues and was out of warranty.

The product, in the report: It is the 6-cell battery for my hp Spectre x360 laptop. It’s a hp YB06XL rechargeable Li-ion battery. It listed on the battery as hp part number: 928427-271 and it also says replace with HP spare 928372-855 and CT: 6GLQC04TZAGA9B
I was having an OS problem with my hp laptop and the repair tech noticed that the battery was so swollen/bloated the back would not completely close. The seam on the battery is also coming apart. I think the swelling has caused the space bar to not work properly. I’m not sure if it will continue to expand to the point it could “explode.”

Early this morning at 4 am I was woken up by a popping noise, by the time I came to and understood what was going on there were flames coming out of my HP laptop. My laptop was beside me on my bed charging, it was in sleep mode and nothing else power wise was on in the room. It was an original battery and charger being used. I can’t provide any serial numbers because it’s completely charred. It burned my sheets and bed too from the fire it caused. Thankfully there were no injuries just trauma.

The product, in the report: HP Spectre Laptop Model - 2LV24UA#ABA
The HP laptop I purchased around 28 Nov 2018 was a 2LV24UA#ABA. I noticed the back cover popping up around 2019 but did not report it as I thought it was just a simple plastic cover popping up. However around Mar 2020 the said popping became bigger - and just realised it’s the battery inside that has started to swell.
Do note I have a HP care pack (warranty) still available upto 2021.
I am not in the US currently, and now stationed in Singapore for work. HP does not want to cover the replacement of the battery because as they have noted I am outside of the US already - however, I have seen that in this HP Spectre laptop model, many consumers have already swollen batteries.
I am not able to travel to the US due to coronavirus restrictions.

The product, in the report: 2 identical laptops: HP Envy x360 m Convertible Model15m-cp0011dx ProdID 3WW57UA#ABA Dimensions approximately: 9.5” x 14” x 0.75”
I purchased 2 HP Envy 15 laptops around mid-July, 2018 from Best Buy. I recently noticed that both laptops are starting to swell and expand from underneath the trackpad. On one laptop, the trackpad has protruded to the point of separating from the adjacent plastic that borders it, exposing metal components just underneath the trackpad. I researched the issue, and found that there is a big recall. I’m glad I know about it now because I was unaware of it before; however, when I downloaded the HP validation utility on their recall support website, my computer failed the validation. The utility claims that my battery is not affected. Both of my laptops are clearly affected. They are, without a doubt, affected. I’m concerned about this, because my household has five HP laptops and countless other HP products. I called HP’s support number for incidents related to these batteries this morning, the first time at 8:02 am CST, and the second time at 8:53 am CST. Both times, I was the “1st caller in line” for the entire phone call, nobody answered the call, and HP disconnected the phone call at 40 minutes for both phone calls. I have phone records of both calls and a recording of the second call. HP has a support webpage*, which states that if your laptop is swelling, they will replace the battery, only if the battery is under warranty, otherwise the consumer must pay for a new battery. Will this ever be resolved? Isn’t HP strictly liable for their products when they are found to have manufacturing defects and are hazardous?
The following is directly quoted from HP’s website (URL above):
“A swollen battery does not present a safety issue. It is the result of the generation of gases per the normal degradation of the battery cell over time. HP has worked closely with our battery cell suppliers and third-party industry experts to help minimize the potential for HP batteries to swell over time and to identify that swollen batteries are not a safety issue.” ... “If a battery is under warranty, HP will replace the battery per the terms and conditions of the HP Worldwide Limited Warranty or applicable HP Care Packs. For batteries no longer under warranty, contact HP to purchase a genuine HP replacement battery.”

The product, in the report: HP Envy laptop
I purchased an HP Envy laptop directly from HP.com on Thanksgiving 2019. Two weeks ago, I left the PC connected to the charger which came with the laptop overnight with the charger connected to a household outlet. The laptop was in Sleep mode resting on a wooden table. In the morning, the laptop was so physically hot that I could not touch it for longer than a second with my bare hands. I feared that the laptop might cause a fire. I disconnected the charger from the outlet and placed the laptop on a non-flammable surface with a fan to cool it off. It took over 5 hours for the laptop to cool-off to a temperature that it could be touched with bare hands. After waiting a day, the laptop still functions but with almost no battery. Based on the safety standards for electrical devices, the laptop should have prevented any overcharge of the battery and the touch temperature well exceeded what is allowable.

I have a HP Notebook - 15-da0032nr Serial number: CND8268BCH Product number:4EY61UA
It was purchased at Micro Center in Columbus, OH back in September 2018. Over the past few months I have noticed that the part of the charger that connects to the AC plug for the wall has been overheating during charging and a few days ago it was hot enough to burn my hand. I do not leave it plugged in for a prolonged period of time and only for a couple of hours at the most before unplugging and letting the battery run down naturally while the laptop is being used. It is charging without issue but the overheating happens within about 30 minutes of plugging the unit in, the plug also occasionally sparks when it is first being plugged in (has done this at several residences). I know HP has recently recalled some products due to overheating and wanted to see if this model is part of that recall or needs to be added

Here’s the note from the repair shop: found a short on the underside of the touchpad. Fixed it and the burn mark it made on the batter. ALso bad hard drive sectors so put in new drive and reinstalled operating system. Transferred data from old drive and working great. Bill is $248.45. As long as it works right for you. If it has issues soon then we can credit you towards a new laptop.

Now the side cover and keyboard are elevated to the point the laptop won’t close at all. After online research, we found out that certain HP laptop batteries are recalled. Contacted Costco and HP but they both claim that our model is not on recall list. Costco even went further saying that because the warranty expired this past November they won’t and can’t do anything about it until our laptop catches fire and burns. Costco Case No. 10325558.

The product, in the report: The product is the HP Pavilion 17 Notebook PC. The product number is G4X63UA#ABA. The serial number is 5CD41412MB. My battery number is 6DGAHN5GW6G8K3.
I had had difficulty with the lithium ion battery in my HP Pavilion 17 Notebook PC. The product number is G4X63UA#ABA. The serial number is 5CD41412MB. I have had this laptop for a couple years now. Off and on for years my battery has overheated, which has caused a burn hazard. If it is in contact with someone’s skin, it is so hot it could cause a burn. I saw that HP recalled some batteries last year and checked to see if mine was on the list. I was surprised it was not. My computer has been overheating a lot lately due to the battery. I checked HP’s website and saw that they updated the recall. Again, I thought my battery would be listed and it was not. It gave the option to report an unsafe product. I do not think that this product is safe. It has been a continuous issue. My battery number is 6DGAHN5GW6G8K3. Although they has not been a permanent injury, no one in my family holds the laptop or puts it on their lap due to the intense heat. The battery will overheat and shut the computer off. I do not think this is safe.

The product, in the report: HP G61-511WM Laptop
On September 29, 2017 I had plugged in my HP G61-511WM laptop to charge and went to bed. A few minutes later I heard 2 pops and rolled over and saw my bedspread and mattress on fire. Then watched as something shoot across the room and catch my curtains on fire. After putting the fire out and calling 911 I realized that the battery had caught on fire and exploded. Pieces to the battery were melted into the carpet in both the bedroom and my living room (about 20 feet away). Half of a wall was burnt and has to be replaced, my mattress and box springs were burned up, and I have 2nd degree burns on my hand and foot.

I bought an HP laptop in December and the liquid screen of the laptop broke by itself. The liquid condensed and caused a cracked that Hp think I caused. I did not cause it and it is very easy to investigate. I have the laptop returned from hp that did not want to honor the manufactuere warrantee. HP techinican refused to investigate what cause it. The liquid from the screen spilled and caused red spot in my skin. Please investigate. I have my pc available for you to take a look at it. Since this issue happened I have develop a rash. I am going to see my doctor for a check up the 22th. Not sure if this is related to his issue but one thing I know, I did not break my laptop and it cracked by itself causing a liquid spill. I reported this issue to HP and they ignored me and blamed me. Hp does not want to honor the manufacturer warrantee and now I have to deal with losing a 1000 dollars pc plus the the medical expenses that might cause.

My HP Pavilion dv7 laptop (which I paid $2838.56 for) gets so hot it has burned our four year-old and I have to have my left hand on a oven pad to keep from getting burned while using it. It does this with anything over 6% of CPU usage. I have read there were recalls on several overheating issues with HP but they never contacted me if this is related. If it is not, it should be recalled for safety. It gets worse each month. I’ve been trying to get all data saved to external drives but I have no choice but to use the computer as I purchased it for work. If I turn it off for over 24 hours it will be cool for a few minutes before revving up the fan and making the metal frame all unbearable and dangerous. I’m afraid some time it will melt the plastic components and start a fire.

The product, in the report: HP Laptop Computer
My HP computer was plugged in and charging on my end table in living room whkls watching a show and the computer keyboard suddenly had flames coming out. Attempts were made to blow out the flames and kept restarting. Then suddenly the computer started to explode. It was like bottle rockets coming from the computer. Several small fires started in my house before we were able to get close enough to dump computer in bucket and cover with blanket to block projectiles from hitting us. Once computer was outside for about 10 minutes it kept shooting off projectiles which I found afterwards was the individual battery cells. Had to use fire extinguisher to put out the couple of fires in house. Sustained damage to carpet, and walls lamp and end table. I am in public safety as my occupation and never seen such a thing. Still have the computer and what’s left of battery pack. Website form would not allow upload of photos. I have photos of the computer and the damage to house.

The product, in the report: Silver, 13” , HP Spectre 360, Product L0Q51UA#ABA Model 13-4003dx
I paid over $1,300 for what I thought was a very reliable company laptop for school and work (HP SPECTRE 360). My laptop was not used that often. But, one night I allowed my baby cousin to watch cartoons videos with me while he go to sleep and all of a sudden the computer started to burn and the smell was horrible. I had no idea what was going on as ive had laptops that has lasted 7 years before they had this sort of problem. I purchased HP for reliability and i have been disappointed at the fact that its unsafe for anyone to use a computer that burns up from the inside. What if I left my baby cousin unattended for a few seconds as he watched his favorite cartoons. I should not have to worry about a laptop burning up especially when its new. My laptop is out of warranty and I refuse to pay $400 for an issue that is recurring. There are many blogs about the hp spectre 360 burning up under there own website. This company should consider this as a recall. This is dangerous. I really want my money back or a new and improved version. Its not fair that I had to save for so long on a product that causes danger to my family and unreliable after a year of minimum use.

The battery in my HP Pavilion gets excessively hot even with a short amount of usage. We must turn it off often because of the fear of burning the desk. The fan will run constantly to try to cool it. I have checked it with each of the recalls and can’t believe that ours was not included. We have not been injured by the heat only because each of us in the home knows to not touch this computer after using more than a few minutes.

The product, in the report: Black five year old laptop
We purchased an HP Pavilion laptop (Model G6 Serial No. 5CG150093K) approximately five years ago. Tragically, it literally blew up Thursday December 22, 2016.
The havoc it caused in our kitchen/family room was quite extensive. It was plugged into the outlet. Had just booted up with no apps running. My daughter, [REDACTED], heard a pop (she was sitting about 10 feet away with the PC directly in her vision and a minute later the laptop left the countertop in an upward flight, flipped over 180 degrees in the air then landed on its top and the battery pack was on fire lying on our granite countertop. Pieces of battery, copper, and burning ash with some chemical too spread over a 20 foot square area. The next thing she did was to put out the fire even though she was in shock from the explosion that had just taken place. She successfully did so, and managed to avoid burning herself in the process. If she had been in front of the PC she would have been badly burned and if not home our house could certainly have burned down. There was extensive damage in the kitchen which we are still finding two days later. Our hardwood floor has many deep burn marks, the stainless fridge and dishwasher are damaged chemicals, and our floor was covered in copper, ash, acid, etc. Finally, there were burn holes discovered in our handmade cashmere Persian rug.
We had Seattle KIRO7 TV here that evening for a story which they are still investigating before airing. It appears a battery recall for this model was only for 2013-16 and was voluntary, but we never received an email or letter about this issue (even though I purchased this directly from HP).

The product, in the report: HP lap top computer
I had been working on my computer for a couple hours. The battery was in it. I decided to take a break, put the computer on sleep mode and sat it down on the chair next to me. About 20 minutes later, I heard a strange popping type sound. I looked around to try and find out the source of the noise, which I wasn’t able to find. I proceeded on my break, when a loud noise came from the computer and it immediately burst into flames. I grabbed it, with the flames coming from the entire back end and tossed to the sink. Parts of the battery (2), were thrown about and the rest of it was melted off the carpet. I now have a broken Pavilion, destroyed chair and and multiple burn marks through out the carpet, which will need to be replaced.

I was using the charger with “LS 15” power cable and there is over heating of the charger unit and my battery got damaged due to it. Until then I used to get around 2 and half hours of battery. As soon as i switched on the charger switch, there were few sparks near the plug and i immediately switched it off. I replaced the cord with another one at my home and when i turned on my laptop there was a warning message saying battery need to be replaced. I just tested my laptop’s battery backup and i observed that it is working for only 5-10 minutes. Later I checked with the site and i see that there are problems with “LS-15” cables and i ordered a replacement today. The Order no. is “[REDACTED]”.
So kindly look into this issue and see to it that my battery gets replaced not just the power cord. Or else I will proceed legally. Thank you

The consumer has the LS-15 cord that is recalled in Rel #14-262 but is not sure if hers is included.
The consumers also have had an additional problem which she called HP about. The consumers plugged the cord in to charge the laptop and fire shot out of the outlet! The consumers unplugged it immediately took the cover off & saw that the wires (electrical) & part of the outlet was burned! No longer useable! The consumer called HP 8/29 & made a report. They said not to try & fix the outlet & not to use the computer. He said someone would call within 24 hours. However, as of 9-2 no one has called. He forwarded it to the “concern” dept. The consumer has the case #. The consumers called the CPSC & he said the consumer could add this to report.

The product, in the report: HP Pavilion dv7t-6b00 CTO Quad Edition Entertainment Notebook PC (s/n 2CE1442RF4)
HP dv7 - quad-core notebook pc has always run warmer than other notebook pc’s. And I thought it was normal until I pulled my notebook pc out of my bookbag and the back covering had melted. The notebook was in hibernation mode, which means that it is completely shut off with the immediate memory written onto the hard drive. This allows the system to boot up much quicker than a normal starting procedure. The system was not overly hot when I put the notebook pc in my bookbag before heading to class and the battery was still fully charged when I found the back panel melted. HP claims that the case melted due to a clogged heat sink and sent me pictures of the heat sink. There was dust and dog hair on the heat sink but I do not think that it was by any means “clogged.” The dv7 model has received numerous complaints regarding heat issues and I did not think that a laptop could melt before this incident occurred.
More than anything else: if a laptop can get hot enough to melt then it could easily cause severe 3rd degree burns.

Caller is reporting that on December 23rd, 2013 his wife began to plug the USB Cord into the back of her desktop computer but as quickly as the metal hit she saw sparks so she stopped. Her husband (the caller) tried and was shocked. He tested the electric coming from the cord and it tested at 110 volts when he states that the power supply shouldn’t be more than 32 volts. The callers 26yr old son was going to look at it but when he got near the metal casing it tripped the breaker to the room the desktop was located in. The caller is asking that this product be recalled with replacement at manufacturer expense. He is reporting as a severe shock and potential fire hazard.
There are no injuries being reported The caller has contacted the manufacturer and was advised that there are no recalls for this particular product.

I plugged in my HP pavilion dv6500 laptop and turned it on. Aproximately 5 minutes later I heard what sounded like a shot gun blast. The laptop had exploded. I was sitting about 7 feet away in my kitchen. The laptop was on the island. I jumped up, took the laptop off of the island (it was burning the countertop) put it on the stove and put the flames out. I started to assess the damage to the countertop and take pictures with my cell phone, then it burst into flames a second time. I put it on the floor and extinguished it again....I then took it outside for fear of another explosion and called HP. There was damage to the countertop, the stove and the kitchen was covered in black soot.

The product, in the report: HP Pavilion DV7-1232nr laptop.
HP DV7 Laptop overheats to the point where it can cause burns. The laptop eventually heats so much that it destroys the CPU so that the laptop is dead. I contacted HP a few months after buying it about the overheating issue and they told me it was normal and there was no issue. I have called several times over the past 2 years as the heat made the laptop malfunction and now completely die. It is now out of warranty and they refuse to fix it or admit that there is an overheating issue. They claim that any over heating is due to the programs I use. But it begins to overheat before it can even reach the login screen.

The product, in the report: HP Laptop
My Hp Laptop Pavilion dv6 gives me mild shocks sometimes. I’ve gotten shocked from the edge but mostly when I pick it up and my finger puts force on the air openings near the front left rubber bumper on the bottom of the computer. I e-mailed HP with no reply and I called their tech support line and the person couldn’t speak english well enough to understand what I was saying. She kept asking for my name. I think it was a ploy to frustrate me and make me just say forget it.

The product, in the report: HP Pavillion Laptop
Laptop battery becomes dangerously hot. One afternoon, while my husband had been working on homework at our dining room table for less than an hour, the heat of the laptop battery caused our table’s glass top to spontaneously shatter-- throwing a large piece of glass into his lap and splitting the entire tabletop. My husband was very fortunately not injured in this incident. At a later date, the overheating battery also caused the laptop’s own screen to crack and shatter upon closing.

The product, in the report: HP Pavilion dv 8000 battery GC0200003r10-05b043y
My notebook is a HP DV8000 and the battery is not part of the recall. The battery get so hot when charging that we do not leave it unattended when charging. We must plug it in while it is being used. This has been a problem since it was new and remains a problem to this day. I think the recall has not yet been expanded enough. They simply have a design problem and should replace any of the fire causing (and concern causing) batteries.

The product, in the report: Laptop Computer
I have an HP pavillion dv6. It gets very hot. I have heard screeching noises inside of it and smoke has come out of it. I make sure to keep it shut down because I worry that it will get to hot and catch my house or something on fire. I have contacted HP and they won’t do anything about it.

The product, in the report: 6730b HP laptop
My HP 6730b laptop has the same as as Release #11-234 from CPSC. I have another colleague with the same laptop who has the same overheating issue as this release details. However the 6730b is not included in the recall.
I’m not even sure that the battery is at fault. When pressure is put on the top of the case, I suspect the power button is continuously depressed as a result and the battery depletes quickly with a lot of heat generated. I have to take the battery out when I travel because the laptop gets so hot.
