No one hurt Made Oct 7, 2026, sent to the company Oct 13, 2026, published by CPSC Oct 27, 2026
The product, in the report: Apple iPad tablet computer, 6th generation, 9.7 inch, model A1893, with built-in lithium battery. Original device, never repaired or modified, used normally at home.
On 08/29/2026, my Apple iPad spontaneously caught fire while sitting unplugged and completely unused on a desk. The lithium battery appears to have undergone thermal runaway. Sparks and intense heat burned through the seal between the back casing and the touchscreen, scorched the desk, destroyed a charging cable, and melted the plastic casing of a nearby power bank. Black smoke filled the room. No one was injured. I reported the incident to Apple and mailed the device in for inspection. Apple responded in writing that the incident was not caused by a failure of the product, but gave no explanation of the actual cause and refused replacement. The device remains in Apples possession, and I have formally requested its return.

Hurt, no treatment Made Oct 1, 2026, sent to the company Oct 7, 2026, published by CPSC Oct 22, 2026
The product, in the report: Apple Vision Pro first generation spatial computer and virtual reality headset, 512GB, model A2117, with the Apple supplied Light Seal, cushion and head band components selected during an Apple retail fitting.
I purchased an Apple Vision Pro 512GB, model A2117, on February 8, 2024. Apple personnel spent approximately two hours fitting the device and tried different available facial components, Light Seals, cushions, straps, or fit configurations. I do not wear prescription glasses or contact lenses, do not require vision correction, and did not use [REDACTED] Optical Inserts. When I used the device for approximately 30 to 60 minutes, I repeatedly experienced pronounced facial pressure and visible indentations around my nose and cheeks, headaches associated with use that sometimes continued after removal, and temporary post-use visual distortion lasting approximately three to five seconds. These effects recurred during longer or heavier ordinary sessions. Exact incident dates are not recalled. Early use was limited while I waited for software improvements; total use remained approximately 20 hours. I stopped using the device rather than reproduce the effects. I am not claiming a medical diagnosis, treatment history, permanent injury, laser malfunction, or lasting visual damage. The product remains complete and undamaged. I notified Apple in 2024 after support case [REDACTED], but Apple treated the request as outside the return period and did not provide a meaningful safety review. The device remains covered through AppleCare One.

No one hurt Made Sep 24, 2026, sent to the company Sep 29, 2026, published by CPSC Oct 21, 2026
The product, in the report: Blue Apple iPad 10th generation
The user was holding an Apple iPad, 10th generation to browse the web using the native Safari application on the night of September 7, 2026. During normal operation, the device experienced sudden and extreme thermal runway, generating intense, localized internal heat that caused active, physical burning pain across the user palms and fingertips. The heat spike was severe enough to liquefy Apple internal factory structural adhesive enclosure tape, causing the screen glass to structurally buckle and fracture right at the front camera cutout, which is now permanently fogged from the fracture. Apple, internal diagnostic logs under a specific case number permanently prove that the battery pathologically failed prematurely at only 563 cycles of (76% maximum capacity) in May 2026. An Apple support manager explicitly identified the unit as a fire risk and asked it to be isolated unplugged on the tile floor. No emergency room visit occurred, but the user who lives with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) experienced severe physical pain across their thermal nerve pathways from handling the malfunctioning hardware. An entire two weeks has passed since reporting this hazard, and Apple has refused a safety override or a fee exempt replacement, explicitly forced a consumer to keep an active overheating hazard in their household unless an out of warranty fee is paid. Apple strictly told the user to keep using the iPad and they pretended it was the user fault and that the user had caused accidental damage. When in fact, the user did not do any damage. The screen is still workable. The only thing that is broken is the glass. The iPad was purchased in August 2024. Apple also did tell the user that they should have called when they had the warranty and it was their fault for not calling when the warranty was active when this iPad did not cause any severe issues until after the warranty expired.

The product, in the report: MacBook Pro M4 2024 14 inch serial number F57L5WKWN6
I own a MacBook Pro that has a swollen lithium battery that cracked the touchpad. This is very serious safety issue. The crack can possibly cause a fire, produce chemicals released to the touchpad and possible exposure to sharp glass. I have tried to get apple to repair the device, since a senior apple rep volunteered they have a problem with this model and the swollen battery. I discovered the crack 7 days after warranty was up. The computer has sat on my desk since purchasing the item. It does not travel. It would be impossible for me to crap the “tough glass” that they brag about. Last week I asked for a consideration to fix the defect, since I am a longtime customer. After 7 phone calls, 2 hang ups, a “senior advisor” flat out accused me of cracking the touchpad. I shared with the person they have admitted to a design problem with this product. I am in fear of a fire or chemical spillage from the crack. Apple’s solution is charge me $500 to fix a computer I paid $2,000 for, after owning the computer for 12 months. I was disrespected by apple customer service when a service advisor called me on Sunday morning, when I made it clear I would not take a call on the Sabbath. Of course this person was obviously on the other side of the world and did not respect my religious beliefs. I have wasted hours trying to get apple to do the right thing. They are subjecting me to an unsafe product, that they admit has design flaws. This is unacceptable.

The product, in the report: Apple Studio Display (refurbished, official) height and tilt adjustable stand. Latest model.
I unboxed an Apple Studio Display for the first time and was in the process of adjusting then lifting it and it smashed my finger into its hinge (height / tilt) mechanism, and sliced the nail in two. I was in pain and bleeding and had to go immediately to urgent care at [REDACTED] (documented) where I was x rayed in case the finger had been fractured. I was told I was lucky, it had not been. However, I’m in pain, was very shaken, spent significant time in urgent care today, I cannot use my finger, must stop work to rest it, and will take 1-2 weeks to heal. The experience was terrifying. I am a music student, I play guitar seriously and the thought of permanent damage to one of my fingers is a deeply scary prospect. There is zero warning on this display that care must be exercised in unboxing and set up otherwise fingers can be sliced. It is not at all obvious from looking at the monitor that this would be the case. It looks completely safe: that the only it could inflict injury is if it were dropped on a foot etc.

No one hurt Made Aug 1, 2026, sent to the company Aug 5, 2026, published by CPSC Aug 19, 2026
The product, in the report: Apple Watch Ultra (1st generation, 2022 model), 49mm aerospace-grade titanium case, silver/natural titanium finish, with Midnight Ocean Band. GPS + Cellular. A rugged smartwatch marketed by Apple for outdoor and water sports, including recreational scuba diving to 40 meters via the built-in depth gauge and the [REDACTED] dive application. The device was being used as a dive computer at the time of failure.
On July 4, 2026, I was scuba diving at approximately 100 feet of depth off Guanacaste, Costa Rica, using an Apple Watch Ultra as my dive computer. The watch was running the [REDACTED] dive application, which Apple markets and sells for recreational scuba use on this device. While at depth and in active dive mode, the watch began spontaneously and repeatedly resetting, displaying the Apple boot logo and restarting. It then displayed a temperature/thermal-warning screen (thermometer indicator) and a prompt to restore, before powering down entirely. When I surfaced, the front glass of the watch was visibly raised above the protective titanium bezel, protruding outward in a manner consistent with internal lithium-battery swelling. The glass has since receded into the housing, but the device has not powered on since and is permanently inoperable. This is a safety-critical failure. A dive computer provides depth, elapsed bottom time, and ascent-rate information on which a diver depends for safe ascent and avoidance of decompression injury. Losing that information at depth creates a serious risk of injury or death. At the time of the failure I was at 100 feet with large marine predators present and was forced to divert my attention to the malfunctioning device. I am an Advanced Open Water certified diver and managed the situation without harm, but a less experienced diver in the same circumstances could have been seriously injured or killed. The apparent battery swelling and thermal event in a sealed device worn on the body and marketed for diving also presents an independent burn/thermal hazard. I reported this to Apple (support case [REDACTED]). After review, Apple offered only standard paid out-of-warranty service and did not treat it as a safety matter. I have preserved the device unaltered and have not attempted to open, charge, or repair it. I am filing this report so the failure is documented and so CPSC can identify any pattern of similar failures in this product.

The product, in the report: USB-C to USB-C charging cable and a USB-C wall charger or power adapter that were included in the box with a refurbished Apple iPad mini 6th generation, 64GB, Space Gray. The cable and charger are generic non-Apple accessories that came packaged in a plain white box. During normal charging, the USB-C cable overheated, smoked, and became scorched and charred, which is a fire hazard. The iPad itself appears undamaged. The failure was in the included cable and charger.
While charging a refurbished Apple iPad mini (6th generation), the USB-C charging cable that came included with the device began smoking and became scorched/burned during normal charging. My child had just disconnected the cable when I smelled smoke and entered the room. I immediately unplugged the charger from the wall. The cable was visibly charred. No one was injured, but this was a fire hazard that occurred during normal use, with a child present. The iPad was purchased refurbished through Walmart.com from a third-party Marketplace seller named “[REDACTED]” and arrived in a plain white box with a non-Apple USB-C cable and wall charger (not original Apple accessories). I have retained the damaged cable and charger.

The product, in the report: Apple Watch Series 11
At around 4:30 A.M I woke up with my right arm hurting so I sat up and removed my Apple watch Series 11, 42 M and went into the bathroom where I could see, and my skin was burnt the skin must have peeled back when I took the watch off. I do take blood thinners so there was blood as well, I tried to rinse with water but it burnt so bad so I then put peroxide which also burnt. I went to [REDACTED] walk in clinic once they opened at 9:00 and sat for an hour before being told I probably would not be able to be seen unless someone cancelled. I left [REDACTED] and went to [REDACTED] Urgent Care and was seen and they confirmed it was a 2nd degree burn on my arm. They cleaned it and wrapped it and prescribed a pain cream Diclofenic Gel as well as Silver Sulfadiazine topical cream for infection I did file a report with Apple safety first thing Monday Morning since they were not open on Sunday. I was given an Apple case [REDACTED] and was told it would be escalated and I should hear back from someone within 2 days.

The product, in the report: Apple MacBook Pro laptop computer with built-in lithium-ion battery. The device would not power on prior to the thermal runaway event. Model: MacBook Pro 14” Serial Number: GG2R003DCJ OS: macOS 26.2
On February 4, 2026, an Apple MacBook Pro laptop computer experienced a catastrophic thermal runaway event at a private residence. The lithium-ion battery exploded, venting toxic Hydrogen Fluoride gas and leaking electrolyte fluid. The consumer was exposed to the toxic fumes and was transported by ambulance to the Emergency Room, where they were diagnosed with Chemical Pneumonitis (inhalation injury) and treated with Albuterol and Lidocaine. The consumer had a Genius Bar appointment scheduled for that same day (Case [REDACTED]) because the device would not power on. Before the appointment could be attended, the device exploded. The device remains in emergency isolation, continuing to off-gas and leak hazardous material. Apple Support opened Case [REDACTED] but has failed to respond or dispatch a retrieval team as of February 6, 2026.

The product, in the report: Apple Watch SE
On January 27, 2026 at approximately 5:15pm EST, my Apple Watch SE (2021) experienced a sudden and unexpected failure while I was wearing it on my wrist inside my home. I was standing still in my living room and was not engaged in physical activity, impact, or charging at the time of the incident.
Without warning, the device made an audible noise and unusual heat, then the screen separated from the body of the watch. The failure occurred while the watch was on my wrist, which caused immediate alarm and posed a potential burn or injury risk due to the proximity of the device to my skin. I immediately removed the watch.
There was no prior damage, misuse, or modification to the device. The watch had been used under normal conditions. The incident was not associated with a drop, impact, or water exposure. The failure appeared sudden and spontaneous.
No serious physical injury occurred, but the event was frightening and presented a clear safety concern involving a wearable lithium-ion battery device. The device remains damaged, with the screen detached, and has not been powered on, charged, or repaired since the incident.
Photos and documentation of the damaged device are available and can be provided.

The product, in the report: Apple iPad Pro - 12.9 inch - 5th generation
An Apple iPad provided to me by Apple as a replacement device caught fire during normal charging. The fire originated from the charging port of the device, burned the connected charging cable, and caused damage to my carpet. An original Apple charging cable was used. The power adapter did not overheat and remains functional. The incident presented a clear fire and safety hazard. Apple Support initiated a Product Safety case, but no written follow-up or resolution has been provided.

The product, in the report: Apple Watch, stainless steel case, full size, Series 3
An Apple Watch ‘Series 3’ being used by my 13 year old Step Daughter is experiencing a significant safety failure. The internal LiIon battery has expanded so much that the watch enclosure has fully separated exposing the swollen battery and internal electronics. The watch still functions and was being charged by my step daughter when she told me the watch had suddenly disassembled. Given that the watch still functions and can be charged, despite the badly damage cell and open enclosure, this represents an unsafe failure mode with significant risk to persons and property. I have discussed my significant concerns at length with Apple representatives both in store and over the phone. Much to my surprise they have reiterated that the watch is simply at its normal ‘end of life’. Despite what is clearly an unsafe failure with risk of a thermal event should the watch continue to be used.

The product, in the report: 2019 MacBook pro, 13 inch, 8 gb memory 256 gm storage. space gray color
On April 6, I purchased a refurbished MacBook from Back Market (Order #[REDACTED]) for $320.93. While in normal use recently, the laptop began smoking and leaking fluid. For immediate safety, I moved the device away from flammable materials. I returned the device under warranty, but the seller denied my claim, alleging “liquid damage.” I am formally disputing this based on the merchants own photographic evidence: Proof of Thermal Failure : The battery casing is clearly melted, bubbled, and charred. Simple liquid exposure does not melt plastic; only the extreme heat of a battery thermal runaway event (fire hazard) does. Misidentified Fluid: The “liquid” the seller found is battery electrolyte that vented during the smoking event. The seller is mislabeling this hazardous chemical leakage as user-induced water damage to avoid a refund. Safety Negligence: Back Market support has refused to acknowledge the physical evidence of melting and continues to support the seller’s dangerous misdiagnosis. I am requesting a full refund of $[Insert Price] as the product sold was defective and presented a significant fire risk.

The product, in the report: Product: Apple MacBook Pro (2023) — M3 Max Serial number: D6NJ033YH9
I am submitting a consumer product safety incident report regarding a 2023 Apple MacBook Pro (M3 Max) that emitted smoke and appeared to experience an internal electrical failure shortly after an Apple-authorized repair at an Apple repair center.
Product details
Product: Apple MacBook Pro (2023) — M3 Max Serial number: D6NJ033YH9 Charger/cable in use at time of incident: Apple provider magsafe charger Power source: [REDACTED] surge protector that then connects directly to the wall; Note that both the charger involved as well as the surge protector are fine, and in fact, I used the same magsafe charger and have been using it on a backup laptop for 3 days since the incident with a backup laptop; The charger or the surge protector are not the issue. [REDACTED] Operating system: 26.1 Owner: [REDACTED]
Service history
Reason for original service: device would freeze at login and later hang on the Apple logo during boot. Apple repair performed: logic-board replacement. Device returned from repair: Thursday, November 6, 2025. The incident occurred on the first full charge after the repair, on Saturday, November 8, 2025
Incident description (Nov 8, 2025)
While the laptop was on AC power, I heard a pop/hissing sound from my office. I observed visible smoke coming from the MacBook chassis and a strong burning electrical odor. The laptop shut off on its own. I immediately unplugged it and moved it outdoors to mitigate fire risk. Injuries: Burn to finger from hot hot spot on the underside of my MacBook Pro as it had an internal fire. Property damage: None observed. Since the event, I have stored the device in my vehicle due to concern about potential thermal runaway; I would rather it catch on fire in my car rather than it burn my house down.
Aftermath / manufacturer interactions
I contacted Apple by phone multiple times. I received inconsistent guidance (including being told to self-ship a potentially hazardous device; a promised label did not arrive). Another example of inconsistent support is initially speaking to two people from Apple’s “Safety Team”, but today on November 11th, 2025, the support agent insisted to me that Apple does not have any type of Safety Team; I asked to be escalated to Customer Relations and they refused to talk to me, effectively ignoring this major safety hazard. I subsequently brought the unit to an Apple Store. A technician inspected it, stated words to the effect of “something sparked,” and placed it in a fire-proof safe. I was told the unit would be replaced rather than repaired. This device could have caught fire or exploded at any time and Apple just did not care and provided sub-par support with no way to return the unit in a safe way. I maintain call logs and case/repair numbers for Apple’s interactions
Evidence available
Photos/video of the device are available upon request Repair documentation (showing the logic-board replacement and return date) are available upon request Original purchase documentation (if needed). Contact info for the Apple Store that examined the device if needed Video/audio recording of myself at the Apple store where I am advised my options are to repair the device OR take a device that may explode or catch fire at any time back home with me which is a major safety concern; I recorded this conversation at the Apple Store
Consent & request
I consent to CPSC sharing my report and contact information with Apple to facilitate investigation. Please advise if you require the physical unit (now in Apple’s possession) to be preserved for examination, or if you need additional documentation or statements. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I am concerned this incident may indicate a post repair electrical/battery safety defect and want to ensure it is reviewed for potential broader hazard that may affects others, especially post-repair at Apple repair centers.
Sincerely,
[REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Apple iPad Air 2
The product I am reporting is an Apple iPad Air 2. Model # NNV22LL/A. Serial # F6QF8002HG5D. The battery swells so much that it “explodes” the iPad to expose both the battery and the internals of the iPad. This has now happened at least twice. Apple recognizes the problem of swelling/exploding batteries, and previously had a special program to replace the dangerous failed batteries. Apparently they have now discontinued that special program. I use only Apple OEM battery chargers, and only Apple service. This is a dangerous situation, and Apple knows about it. They should be required to address it.

Standard MacBook Pro size and weight (approximately 14.0 x 9.8 x 0.66 inches, around 4.7 pounds)
I received an Apple 2023 MacBook Pro Laptop (M3 Max chip, 16-core CPU, 40-core GPU, 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR Display, 48GB Unified Memory, 1TB SSD, Space Black). The item had just been delivered and was placed inside my house, but before I even had the chance to use it, the built-in lithium battery suddenly overheated and exploded. The laptop began emitting smoke and caught fire, which required me to use a fire extinguisher to put it out. Fortunately, no one was using the device at the time, so there were no injuries, but the situation was extremely hazardous and could have caused serious harm or property damage. The device itself was destroyed, and I have photos available of the aftermath.

The product, in the report: Apple USB cord and approved charging base.
Incident Report: Apple USB-C Charger Burn Injury
What happened that made you want to report? While using an Apple USB-C charging cord with an approved charging base to charge a [REDACTED] doorbell, the cord overheated to an extreme and unsafe temperature. Upon unplugging it, I sustained a severe burn to my left index finger. The cords connector was dangerously hot, measuring 185F two minutes after unplugging, indicating it was even hotter at the moment of injury. This poses a serious fire and burn hazard.
What type of product(s) were being used?
Apple USB-C charging cord Approved charging base (compatible with USB-C) [REDACTED] doorbell device Who was using the product(s)? I, the consumer, was using the product.
How were the product(s) being used? The Apple USB-C cord was plugged into an approved charging base and connected to a [REDACTED] doorbell for charging. This was normal, intended use of the product.
Were there any injuries that happened or may have happened while using the product? Yes. I sustained a burn injury to my left index finger. Additionally, the sudden shock and pain from the burn triggered significant emotional distress, which in turn caused a flare-up of my Crohns disease.
How did any injuries occur? After noticing the [REDACTED] doorbell was not charging, I unplugged the Apple USB-C cord from the charging base. The metal connector of the cord was extremely hot and caused a severe burn to my left index finger, leaving a visible burn imprint. I immediately dropped the cord due to the pain. Two minutes later, I measured the connector temperature at 185F, confirming the extreme overheating.
The sudden burn caused intense stress and anxiety, which directly exacerbated my Crohns disease. Stress is a known trigger for my condition, and the emotional distress from this incident initiated a flare-up, worsening my overall health beyond the physical burn injury.
Key Safety Concerns
The cord reached a dangerously high temperature during normal use. The overheating posed a burn hazard and potential fire hazard. The incident caused both physical injury (burn) and secondary medical complications (Crohns flare due to stress and emotional distress). This occurred during standard, intended use with approved equipment.

I was using my 2021 Apple MacBook Pro (purchased in Texas) under normal conditions when it suddenly began to smoke. I immediately shut it down and inspected the device. There are visible signs of fire damage on the laptop near the display hinge. [REDACTED] (an Apple Authorized Service Provider) inspected the device and confirmed that the battery caused the fire and that the laptop is not repairable the entire unit would need replacement.
I contacted Apple Support, including a senior advisor, but Apple refused to inspect or replace the laptop, stating that since I did not have an active warranty or AppleCare+, they would not cover it.
This is a serious safety hazard because the lithium-ion battery ignited and produced smoke inside my home. I was fortunate no injuries occurred, but there was a clear risk of fire spreading. Apple Case number - [REDACTED].

On July 20, 2025, while I was using the laptop to work on a [REDACTED] document, it suddenly caught fire. One of the corners started burning visibly. I got scared, tried to blow it out, and immediately closed the device. The room still smells like burnt plastic or wiring.
This MacBook was a gift I received in 2019, but the model is MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011). The device was not connected to a third-party charger, had not been dropped, and had no previous issues.
I am deeply concerned about the potential fire hazard this type of device can pose for other users. I believe this incident should be documented and investigated.

The product, in the report: MacBook Pro 13in Apple M1 Chip 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU 8GB Memory 512GB SSD Silver Purchased 3/22/2022
Incident Description: I am reporting a serious safety incident involving my Apple MacBook Pro, which caught fire after weeks of abnormal overheating. In addition to the fire itself, I am deeply concerned about Apples refusal to provide any investigation details, technical explanation, or written documentation effectively leaving the consumer completely unprotected.
Details of the Incident: On March 13, 2025, my MacBook Pro began overheating to dangerous levels during normal use and charging. It became too hot to touch, and when unplugged, the battery would drain within minutes. The battery health status still reported as Normal, despite these clear signs of malfunction.
On March 28, my husband opened the back panel to check for any visible issue. Upon slightly lifting the battery with no force or damage involved it ignited immediately, producing sparks and flames. He ran outside and placed it on our deck, where the fire burned part of the deck surface and filled our home with smoke and fumes.
This was not due to misuse or tampering. We were simply trying to understand the source of the heat after weeks of abnormal behavior. The device caught fire from minimal contact.
Apples Response: I contacted Apple immediately. I was transferred to their Safety Department, but I received no clear process or safety guidance. I was asked inappropriate questions (e.g., What color was the flame?). When I asked how to handle the remaining battery components before traveling, I was told, I dont know. Call the emergency line. I shipped the laptop to Apple for review and followed up several times. After weeks of no response, I received a final phone call stating:
Apple determined this was not a product failure. No written documentation or investigation results would be provided. I explicitly requested written communication due to the seriousness of the matter. Apple refused. I was told the case would only be handled over the phone. No repair, refund, or replacement would be issued. Apple refuses to disclose their testing process or criteria. I asked for a simple written summary of their findings and was told I will not receive one. The case is closed, and I was shut down.
Why I’m Reporting to the CPSC: A laptop that catches fire under minimal contact is a serious safety hazard. Apples refusal to document their findings or provide any transparency means there is no way to verify that an investigation occurred at all. There is no consumer protection mechanism in place for incidents like mine especially when Apple refuses to share any information in writing. If such a small movement can trigger ignition, then any normal handling, bump, or drop could pose similar fire risk to other consumers.
As a result of this failure, Ive also been unable to perform my work duties since this laptop was my primary device.
I am urging the CPSC to investigate Apples handling of this case, evaluate the safety of the battery system involved, and ensure that proper consumer protections and accountability are in place especially in cases involving fire-related product failures.

The product, in the report: Laptop
Taken from the information center:
Dear Supervision in Charge
Take a moment and answer this question. If you found out that your parents or grandparents had purchased a consumer product and were being taken advantage of, what would you do? What if this consumer product was defective and could have killed your closest family members, again I would ask what would you do? How would you feel?
My name is [REDACTED]. My wife and I are both retired, senior citizens, and we are both disabled. We recently invested $2,500 into a new Apple laptop computer (Serial Number C02W63J0G8WN). While using our Apple Mac Book Pro, I noticed that suddenly it started wobbling and would not sit flush on the table surface that I was using it on. In short, the computers Lithium Battery had immediately and dramatically swelled up to the extent that it bent the laptops aluminum frame.
Upon first researching the issue on [REDACTED], I was told that my Apple laptops Lithium Battery was defective and that if I took it into an Apple store that Apple would replace the defective battery and repair it for free. I took the laptop in to the Apple store located at [REDACTED] in San Diego, California. I spoke to [REDACTED] at the Genius Bar. Not only would [REDACTED] not repair the laptop or replace the battery for free, he tried to sell me another brand-new laptop. In my old age, I have never had anyone try and take advantage of me.
Next, I tried contacting Apple-Care speaking to an Apple supervisor named [REDACTED]. [REDACTED] told me that Apple was replacing Apple laptop Lithium Batteries, but not my model number.
I then contacted the [REDACTED] and asked for help. As soon as I mentioned that according to “The Consumer Rights Act for faulty goods/ Section 23: Right to repair or Replacement”, and that the consumer has a right to insist upon repair or replacement, Apple stopped responding in respect to a mediation towards the issue.
Prior to retirement, I used to be a Hazardous Material Certifier. I also have an OSHA construction site inspector certification. Lastly while on active duty in the Navy, I was flight-crew and a NATOPS Safety crewman certifier. In respect to Lithium Batteries, I have packaged them, certified them for flight, and I just happen to know how dangerous they are.
lithium Batteries have caught on fire and they have exploded on passenger and military flights. How is it that Apple is being given so much leeway in respect to not having to repair or replace Lithium Batteries for free within their consumer products?
In both instances of speaking with Apple personnel, I was told not to plug in my Apple laptop into any electrical outlet. I was told that if I did that it could catch on fire or explode in its current state.
This Apple laptop could have injured or killed any of my family members.
A lot has changed since I retired. I am certain that my wife and I are being taken advantage of by Apple Incorporated. My wife and I are old. As consumers, we do not know what to do.
Is there any way you could take a moment out of your day and help us, at the very least forwarding this information to someone who can?
This could be your folks or grandparents that this is happening to. Thank you so much for your time in regards to this matter. Sincere!

My iPad Pro (Model A2925, Serial # D339DGPM4F) suddenly began overheating and emitted smoke while in use. It was not charging at the time. The device became extremely hot in the top corner, and smoke was visible. I immediately stopped using it out of fear of fire or injury. This poses a serious safety risk, especially if it had been left unattended or in close contact with flammable material.

The product, in the report: Apple iPad, Model # A1822, 9.7” screen
An Apple iPad (Model # A1822) suddenly got VERY HOT, started expanding and split open the iPad case (the front screen separated from the back case, like an opened clam shell). My son was in bed asleep with the iPad, so it wasn’t even being used. There was also another iPad Pro in contact with the iPad. The iPad Pro was also damaged. It MELTED a 3-inch crater in the iPad Pro’s screen. Bed sheets and pillow cases had holes burned in them. The entire house had a very bad odor which was very hard to get rid of. We were fortunate that we discovered it early, otherwise the bed would have caught fire, with my son in it. The house might have even caught fire.

While cleaning out a metal cabinet that housed my iPad I found the battery to be swollen, the top glass to be separated from the case, and the black screen to be stress bent from the battery swelling but not cracked. This I pad had not been used in a year at least nor charged. I did remove the 4 tiny screws on the black screen to relieve the pressure so the screen did not crack. There have been no injuries so far but the battery keeps swelling

The product, in the report: Apple iPad mini computer tablet (6th Generation) 64 Gb size.
The current Apple iPad operating system does not include a global volume control setting for the built-in speakers. As a result, the volume level of music, videos, etc. is unregulated for those who need it to be regulated. When the unit is held close to the ear, the maximum volume level is such that hearing damage can occur. This is especially true for children, disabled, and other vulnerable people. Without a global volume control, parents and caregivers cannot limit the exposure to the excessive sound levels to those individuals. Apple realized the need in other prior versions of the operating system by including a global volume control setting, but has eliminated that control in their recent updates. The issue relates to the operating system software version 16 for this and all other iPads and iPhones.

The product, in the report: Apple MacBookPro Retina 13-inch Early 2015
My MacBookPro, serial number C2QQ20A1GM13, since new, has burned the insulation from several charging cables due to being built with a defective charging port. The power port caused arcing due to the contacts never making full contact. On several attempts to resolve the matter, I ended up buying several new chargers thanks to the downtown Portland Oregon Apple Store being condescending [REDACTED]. The actual cause was a manufacturing defect in the charging port, which overheated the conductors. Apple Computer is not even willing to have their product safety department look at the damaged computer or cables to see if a recall is needed to prevent an electrical fire. Part of the issue is the age of the computer, 6 years, and part of it is that I wasn’t burned badly enough to seek medical attention during a pandemic. However, I strongly suspect that if the wires get hot enough to burn the insulation off within a day, then fires are likely due to the defective laptops aging. The failures started when the laptop was under warrantee, with the last failure occurring when it was about six years old, and all the failures were caused by a defective power port on the laptop. I suspect that all remaining examples of this product with this defect should be recalled and destroyed.

The product, in the report: The orginal Item was a permanant connected USB-C Power Adapter and USB-C Charge Cable, Cable approximently 6 feet in length. The replacement I received was a detachable USB-C Charge Cable(2m) and a separate 61W USB-C Power Adapter for Macbook Pro 13” computer. Guessing that the cable is also approximently 6 feet in length.
I purchased a new Apple Macbook Pro computer on March 13, 2021, when I opened the box up there was a toxic moldy smell, I examined the contents and determined it was the power cable, I let it air out a few days, still had the odor and when you keep it in a closed up bag the smell gets worse. Today March 25, 2021 I made a call to Apple about the problem, took the cable into a local store for an exchange. Got the cable home opened the little box, samething. This product needs to be looked into for hazardous chemicals that were used in making the product. The odor is so bad it gives me a bad headache. I did do research about this others have also made the same comments.

The product, in the report: 2015 MacBook Pro with Retina Display; 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 processor; 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM; AMD Radeon R9 Mc70X 2GB Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB graphics
MacBook Pro 15” with Retina Display - battery is very swollen and bloated, but is not part of current recall per online serial number look-up on Apple’s support website. Battery tends to run very hot and is not charging properly. Battery meter does not measure battery information correctly. Have attempted to get help through Apple Store Genius Bar without success. Took laptop to MacMedics (Apple authorized repair center) yesterday. MacMedics confirmed battery is badly swollen / bloated. MacMedics and Apple Store will not replace battery for fire, hazardous fume, explosion-related safety concerns because it’s a LiON battery that’s glued to the upper case and it’s difficult to remove. Indicated Apple’s current recommendation for repair is to replace the entire upper case. Cost is $458 even though the issue is the same as the current recall issue because my laptop’s serial number is not currently included in the covered list of serial numbers. Apple regards my laptop as “vintage”. Several others have noted the same issue in online forums. Their laptops are not included in the current range of recall serial numbers, but they also have swollen / bloated batteries. Some have failed catastrophically. (explosion, fire, hazardous fumes) I attempted to follow up with Apple Support by phone today and was told that it’s common and normal for the batteries to swell and bloat. It’s expected.

The product, in the report: iPad Pro - 2020 - Space Gray - 256GB - wifi only (no cell) - brand new - delivered by and from Apple Online. After I was burned the iPad changed colors on the back: blotches of burnt-yellow cover the camera and charging areas.
I picked up my brand new iPad Pro-2020 with my right hand and it was searing-hot! It fell out of my right hand and landed on the back of my left hand. It immediately burned my left hand in a straight line and damaged the inside of my right wrist. The burns were 1st degree and have left scars. I contacted Apple immediately after this happened. They stated concern and then ignored me. When I became concerned about others being potentially hurt I continued to attempt to contact Apple. They hung up on me. Dropped my calls. Promised to help. Promised to get a new device to me ASAP and said: -“Yes! They definitely wanted to see what was wrong with the iPad.” - For the next 3 months they lied to, mislead me, called me names, hung-up on me, made me send them proof of purchase and AppleCare every time I called and treated me like a criminal. I now have scars on the inside of my right wrist and additional damage was done to the nerves, directly affecting my ability to play concert piano. Apple has done NOTHING to correct or even be concerned about this! I keep thinking of the little kids I care for and how devastating it would be if one of them had the same thing happen. It’s a horrible thought!

The product, in the report: MacBook Pro, Retina, 15 inch, mid-2015
The case of my 15 inch Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display mid-2015 suddenly became warped and it is due to the internal battery that apparently failed and became swollen. My MacBook Pro, Serial Number C02SR0DAG8WL, purchased in 2016, was not covered under the battery recall program for this model, and my Apple Care is expired. When I contacted Apple, I was told to not use the computer or charge the battery and I was quoted costs to send it in and have it repaired.
It seems incredible to me that a company like Apple doesn’t assume any responsibility for a defective lithium-ion battery which is an extreme safety hazard.
I would like to see Apple defray the cost of repairing my MacBook Pro since it is a safety hazard due to a known defect and not just a repair. Apple Case Number is [REDACTED]

Received brand new MacBook Pro 13” 2020 computer this week. Noticed uncomfortable buzzing/tingling when touching it while plugged in to wall power. Power supply (brick) provided only comes with 2 prong plug. I was using the product in my home on tile floor while barefoot. The home was build to National standards in 2006 (so wall sockets should be fully grounded).
I note that when I lift my feet off the floor, tingling stops. When computer is unplugged from power and running on battery, tingling stops. When I use an old thick 3-prong power adapter cable that came with 2012 MacBook Pro (connected to the new power block), tingling stops. Apple does not provide a 3-prong cable like this with the new computer.
When I contacted Apple, they said “it was to be expected” ... and some people were just sensitive to it. I expect ALL people are sensitive to it if barefoot on tile floor. This sensation is being shocked as the ground goes through the body to the floor. I expect this would not be uncovered in a corporate manufacturing environment, because all would be wearing shoes which would block being grounded through the floor.

The product, in the report: Apple MacBook (MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016))
The battery on my MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016) swelled up to the point that it ruined the case and the keyboard. I believe this could have been a fire hazard. Batteries should not fail like this and I treated it very carefully, never letting it charge down very low and I only used the Apple supplied power brick and cord.
Apple had no concern. Did not want to see it. Did not care to fix it. I don’t understand why apple doesn’t care when a battery fails to the point it swells enough to bend a metal case.

The product, in the report: 15.4 inch MacBook Pro Laptop - 500GB - i7 Quad Core MC721LL/A Silver laptop heavily damaged from battery explosion. Apple battery. No outside forces exerted on battery, spontaneous and damaging explosion.
I contacted Apple Support because the battery in my MacBook Pro exploded, causing serious damage to my laptop by blowing out the touchpad and the back of the hard case. The battery is from 2015 and installed by a licensed Apple Provider.
The battery was installed into a 2010 MacBook Pro and I purchased that laptop in 2016. When I contacted Apple, they said only the serial number of the laptop denotes if they will repair the item. I explained that the BATTERY was replaced in the 2015-2017 recall event, not the laptop.
I was told that since they cannot search “battery serial numbers” that they will only service the laptops with the appropriate serial number. Apple then told me to bring my laptop to a service center 90 minutes away. In this pandemic, I do not want to drive 3 hours roundtrip across state lines. They refused to send me a shipping label, stating my laptop was “obsolete.”
I reminded them that the recall is on batteries put into MacBooks in 2015-2017. That battery also went into my older model and did explode, creating huge damage to my computer.
Because they do not have a “system” for checking the battery, they refused to commit to the Recall.

The product, in the report: Apple Lightning to USB Cable (2m), Model A1510, white
My wife uses an Apple charging cable to charge her Apple iPhone. When the charging cable is not in use, she leaves it plugged in to the Apple power block with the unterminated lightning connector under her pillow.
On the morning of April 7, she reported to me that her phone wasn’t charging well and that it connected and disconnected repeatedly during the night.
I examined the charging port of the phone, cleaning out any dust that was present and asked her to try it again in the evening.
When we retired to our bed at about 9:30pm, she reached under her pillow and reported that the bedding was hot. When she removed the pillow, we discovered the charging cable had a burned end, and had burned through the pillowcase, into the pillow, through the bed sheet and mattress topper, and had started burning and discoloring the mattress. There was no smoke, but fabrics had burned through.
It is my belief that had we not returned when we did, that the mattress would have been penetrated and an open flame and accelerated fire would have occurred, causing extensive damage to my house and threatened the lives of my family and myself.
I have photographs and can supply them as needed.

My serial # isn’t included in the recall, but I have the same issues with my laptop that are stated in the recall. The product, in the report: Apple 15-inch MacBook Pro laptop computer, mid-2015 model
This is a report for the 15-inch MacBook Pro laptop computer currently under recall for battery overheating issues. (https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2019/Apple-Recalls-15-Inch-MacBook-Pro-Laptop-Computers-Due-to-Fire-Hazard)
I have the mid-2015 model included in the recall, and the battery has gone from flat to pillow-shaped. I brought the laptop in to an Apple store for a display issue, and the tech reported that the battery was possibly the root cause, as the pillow shape is pressing against the circuit boards too much. The batery was diagnosed as pillowed because: 1) the laptop does not sit flat on a surface, despite having all four feet still intact, and 2) the touchpad does not respond as it should.
This battery has always run hotter than I would expect for a laptop battery. In the last two months, it has had some difficulty recharging. It overheated enough to pillow out about a week ago.

Issue: The MacBook Pro’s are advertised to be able to handle professional applications, which apple makes and some 3rd party professional applications as well as games. Yet, when using these types of applications for more than 1-2 straight on Apple’s Laptops, their MacBook Pro’s specifically, the metal chassis that surrounds all the keyboards keys get so hot that it literally burns your finger if touching it for more than 2 seconds.
I have told Apple’s Corporate Executive Relations about this, but they didn’t take the issue very seriously and just talked me in circles around the whole issue among the other issue I was mainly having with the product; since it over-heats by design.
Apple’s Laptops have always been known for being hot computers and having the bottom of the unit burn you if you left it on your lap to long, but todays models are much thinner in design so the heat gets trapped inside the unit and well the chassis becomes a heatsink which makes it get very hot. I used a thermostat on the top panel on mine and it reached 130°! Yes that is the part right above the Touch Bar on a 2017 MacBook Pro after 1-2 hours of straight use with a Game or Professional App like Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro X, or Adobe Premiere Pro CC. Apple has refused to take responsibility for this issue after years of consumers posting YouTube videos and posts about there computers overheating issues.
The reason behind why the Chassis get so hot in the first place that causes it to burn your finger when resting your finger on the keys, which most do when working with professional apps, since keyboard shortcuts are more efficient way of doing things. But the reason is since apple’s thermal cooling system is so poorly designed in there laptops, it can’t cool the CPU nearly at all during heavy use or when GPU intensive apps are loaded and used, so since the heat needs to escape what doesn’t make it out though the fans makes its way thought the chassis making it a giant heatsink. Other Computer companies have already realized this issue and have gone to liquid cooling since its 90% effective at prevent this hazard with laptops with a metal chassis.

The product, in the report: apple iPad, charger, adapater
I purchased a 5 generation iPad back in November. The first day we used it was December 25. It was a Christmas present for my 5 year old daughter. The iPad has been working successfully until recently. The iPad failed to charge Saturday April 7 after having it plugged up for about 6 hours. upon return home from running errands, I had my daughter check the iPad and still did not hold a charge. I told her to bring it downstairs and I will try another socket. I examined the iPad cord and adapter to make sure there went in nicks stretches in the cord and could not find anything (I have had previous iPad cords(not for this iPad) that appeared stretched from normal wear and tear and I took the responsibility and just purchased another one) . I plugged it in the surge protector for about 1 minute. Nothing happened. I plugged it into the actual wall socket next. The time was around 12:10 am. I was sitting near the iPad my computer when I noticed a spark and smoke. I immediately unplugged from the socket and I saw that the cord was melted from where the port is and the cord. I immediately pulled the port part of the charger out of the iPad and it was hot to the touch. So hot that some of the plastic was on my hand melted. I smelled a burnt smell. I called an electrician several hors later to come test the circuit where the iPad was plugged in. Nothing was unusual. I even plugged my computer into the socket. I placed a call to apple and sent pictures.

I purchase a Apple watch series 2 in January 2017. In late Sept/Oct I notice a little moisture under the metal part of the watch on my arm. In November/December I notice my wrist started to discolor and I experience some discomfort below the metal part. The watch was burning my wrist. I contacted Apple on Jan 3 and opened a case: [REDACTED]. I provided them pictures supporting the burn on my wrist. They ask me to return the watch and send pictures of the burn. Since than I haven’t heard from Apple. I wanted to know about a replacement, refund and paid doctor visits. I reached out to an attorney, he asked me to file a report with you and if no action is provided to file a law suit.

The product, in the report: Apple iPad II
My 9 year-old daughter was using our iPad (2nd generation). While using the Apple iPad, playing games, the iPad became extremely hot and violently burst open. It scared my daughter and she brought me the iPad, crying because of the disturbing nature of the failure.
The device was not plugged into any power source at the time of the incident.
I observed the residual heat in the aluminum housing and also that the screen and some other components had “popped off”.” The inner LED display was cracked and small bits of the (glass?) LED display were loose inside of the device; some were ejected from the device when it burst open. I observed that the two (I had later come to understand) batteries were swollen into the shape of pillows, obviously they had expanded outside of the volume meant to contain them.
I brought the device to the local Apple store where I was told that this type of failure could (paraphrasing) happen at any time, to any battery powered device.
I was unsatisfied by their seeming disregard for the safety issues and proceeded to contact Apple directly over their internet portal. Frankly speaking, they seemed unconcerned about the failure. I sent pictures, and told me that their safety engineer explained that since the unit was outside the warrantee there was nothing that they could do. They did not request the device as to evaluate possible failure modes, nor did they explain what caused this. They seemed to be aware that this failure mode was infrequent but common.

I had the watch for about 10 hours when I went to check time and it exploded on my wrist. It instantly became scorching hot and I rapidly removed it from my wrist to prevent injury from heat, fire or contents of the battery pack. At my age (68) the incident startled me but the redness on the top side of my wrist subsided without the need for medical attention and I do not believe physical injury other than the momentary heat occurred. After two days of trying to work with Apple to no avail, I was left with no other option than to give up and the report the incident for the benefit of other costumers wearing what I have now learned from internet searches is a very dangerous product.

While doing a repair on an Apple Macbook, model A1286 and a copyright of 2010 and a serial number of C02FV12RDF8Y, it was having responsiveness issues. After opening it up I saw that the battery was outgassing as the battery had swollen. However when the same computer was updated to the latest Sierra with the latest updates it minimizes the effect of the battery and responsiveness was much improved. It appears to me that Apple knows of this problem with their batteries and instead of solving it they are telling the computer to ignore the problem, which given all the lithium ion battery issues recently, is rather scary.

The product, in the report: Apple notebook computer, model year 2010, MacBook Pro 13”
On July 16, 2016 I was working on my Apple MacBook Pro notebook computer at our vacation home, when I noticed, after a break, that the touch pad in the base of the computer was pushed up and out of the space it should occupy. At that same time I noticed an odor of overheated electronics, so I felt along the back of the computer and noticed a hot spot. After taking the back cover off, it was clear that the battery was the cause of the problem, since it was very hot, and it had expanded so much that it pushed the touch pad right up out of the computer. The immediate problem at that time was a label warning placed by Apple advising the user that they should not remove the battery. I contacted the nearest Apple store that I knew in Christiana, Delaware, but they indicated that they would not touch batteries at that store, even though they did other repairs.
Since even in a powered down state the battery remained hot, I called Apple support number and advised them of the condition. That case number is # [REDACTED]. Since I had enough technical proficiency to figure out how to remove the battery, despite special screws that could not be removed with any common tool, I was able to get the battery out and remove it from the building to a safe location, since there was a real concern about the battery igniting or exploding. Apple confirmed that this was the right thing to do, based on the potential harm, despite their warnings and mechanical attempts to the contrary.
Fortunately I was not injured, nor was there any property damage to the home. However I do not know if any of the electrical connections to the touch pad were compromised, resulting in a potential fire hazard should a broken wire start arcing. As such I have been reluctant to use that computer, and I consider that a property loss. I did contact Apple and sought reimbursement for the replacement battery, considering the overall circumstances. They refused to provide that, since their argument is that a battery is a consumable item that has a defined life. While that it true, the defined life most surely is not expected to end in a fire or explosion, and one that may not be avoided by the average users due to Apple’s efforts to make removal of the battery difficult or impossible for that average user.
At this point, at the least, I would hope that you would require Apple to recall all notebook computers using this battery and/or that include the warning label not to remove the battery and to also require Apple to provide for the replacement of the specialty screws with a common Philips or flat head screw that could be removed by consumers. Ideally Apple should also be required to replace all such batteries, or to provide reimbursements where the user has already replaced the item, as you have done with other manufacturers where a fire or explosion hazard is reported.
Thank you.

I [REDACTED] have the following statement of events occurred to me from the purchase of the Apple iWatch from the Apple Store in San Jose, CA. on January 18, 2016. I have worn the item (iwatch) daily on my left wrist daily since its purchase in effectively replacing my current time piece. On March 9 2016 upon the removal of the device which I had worn all day roughly 13-14 hours had 2nd and 3rd degree burns. My main concern was there the item contained no documentation or disclaimer or manuals to the use or safety of the device. On March 10, 2016 I went to see my family personal Doctor for the burns on my wrist and contact the corporate office of Apple in Cupertino, CA. I had taken pictures of my wounds which has healed but know is discolored with a purple circular mark left on my wrist. The corporate office stated I attempt to try to return the unit even though it’s over the 15 day return period and offered me a $99 credit. On March 20, 2016 I attempted to return the hardware to the original Apple store of purchase by which I was offered return of purchase price. I have no worn nor used my watch device since this has happen. I declare under penalty of perjury that the foregoing is true statement of events in timeline.

The product, in the report: wireless keyboard Exchange date: 9/17/2015
(09/17/2015) The consumer stated that the keyboard is outgassing. The consumer stated that her eyes started to sting and she started coughing. She also became light headed.
No medical attention was required.
The consumer placed the keyboard in the window but the product still has an odor.
(9/22/2015) The consumer contacted Apple Care (800-275-2273) and spoke with [REDACTED]. The consumer advised him of the issue. The consumer purchased an IMac computer with wireless aluminum keyboard in June 2014. The keyboard began to disconnect from the IMac. The consumer called Apple Care. The consumers made some software adjustments. They same if the keyboard continued to disconnect, the consumer should take it to the Apple Store at 67th and B’way, NYC and exchange it for free. This the consumer did. The next keyboard (otherwise identical to the old keyboard which did not smell) stunk. It outgassed so badly, the consumer wrote a complaint to [REDACTED], President of Apple (The reply basically said nothing that was not vague and beside the point.) and called Apple Care again to complain. The techie who answered said he would call the store and arrange for yet another exchange for a keyboard that didn’t smell, and he would like the keyboard that stunk to be forwarded by the store to Apple’ tech people. The consumer took the smelly keyboard to the Apple Store. After 50 frustrating minutes and five clueless Apple employees later, the manager who had received the phone call from Apple Care showed up with a new keyboard. It also outgassed. He tried to clean the keyboard the consumer bought in with alcohol. It still outgassed. He said the consumer must be allergic. The consumer said she wasn’t, and she would like the original keyboard with the disconnect problems back. He said, “Too late, it’s gone.” The consumer took the keyboard home where it has been airing on her windowsill for nearly a month. The consumer thinks she may be able to use it soon. The Apple Store manager said the keyboard had been tested by the EPA (in 2007?)} and passed with flying colors. This the consumer believes since she no problem with any parts associated with her original June 2014 purchase.
The consumer also found 3 or 4 instances of people having intense reactions to this keyboard on the internet.
The parts are manufactured in the US, but assembled in China, a country that has in the past adulterated seemingly harmless products with toxic substances.
The consumer thinks Apple should replace there keyboards with those they were with the IMac in 2014.
Thank you.
The consumer wanted to take the old one back. She advised him that she needed a replacement. She advised him that she would return the product to the store and pick up a new keyboard. When she went to the store to pick up the new keyboard, it had the same smell.
The consumer keep the original keyboard and placed it in the window. She is now using a different keyboard.

The computer was off and not being charged at the time of the event. The battery is a Lithium Ion polymer type. The computer serial number is 34016BKDATM. The battery is marked 31CP5/69/71-2, and is the original battery supplied with the computer, which was purchased new from Apple.
I have photos of the battery.

The product, in the report: Apple Power Mac laptop computer
Daughter was using her Apple I Mac Pro laptop computer when she smelled something burning. Upon further investigation it was discovered that the ac current battery charger that she was using while using her computer which was plugged into the wall had a wire that had burned through. This wire had been smoldering and could be seen as bare through the wire covering. We took the charger to the Apple store in Syracuse, NY and they stated that the wire had been flexed or bent repeatedly over time and that by not using the built in wire wrapping feet built into the unit the wire had degraded over time causing the problem. They said they had seen this before. The store claims that it is the users fault for not storing the ac wire properly when not in use. They state instructions regarding this issue are in the owners manual. However, it is my contention that even if this is so it is insufficient as the info is buried in the literature. A warning label or better design of where the wire enters the charger might help to prevent a future fire or electrocution. Luckily no injuries were sustained in this incident because we were alert and awake at the time of the incident.

The product, in the report: Mid 2009 Apple MacBook Pro 15” laptop (Serial Number W89231EX642) purchased June 2009
I was using my Mid 2009 Apple MacBook Pro 15” (Serial Number W89231EX642) to do class assignments. Suddenly and without warning I heard a pop, the battery had expanded causing the unibody to expand and deform slightly, and the trackpad to stop working as designed. An odor was detected and later a white powder residue was found on the desk and within the laptop’s interior. During the saving and shutting down of the laptop, the device indicated 179°F on the SMC processor temperature monitor, and I felt the discomfort of the high heat under my left palm when it made contact with the laptop next to the trackpad. I unplugged the laptop, moved it to the kitchen counter near the fire extinguisher (just as a precaution) and removed the bottom panel to verify my belief that the battery was the root of the problem. Unfortunately I could not remove the expanded battery due to Apple’s 3 security Pentalobe screws. After attempting to make contact with Apple Care and the Greensboro Apple Store, I elected to visit the Apple store in person with the laptop. The store employees removed the battery and placed into their fire safe due to their observation/assessment and would not return it to me indicating the high risk danger of the battery. Instead they offered to order me a new replacement battery at full cost. The next day, I contacted Apple Care at 1-800-275-2273 and spoke with several individuals, eventually landing with [REDACTED]: [REDACTED], [REDACTED], case number [REDACTED]. He took information and indicated that the battery was over 5 years old and was considered consumed. That the expansion of the battery and the related laptop deformation was normal for a battery that expired/died. He did not address the heat and sudden nature of the failure. He indicated that since I had no ill effects at 24+ hours post incident from the smell, fumes, and white fine powder that the failure of the battery did not present a health risk, and that I would know by now for certain. Why did they indicate in person and over the phone that the suddenness, heat, volatility, possible toxic exposure, and battery behavior is normal or to be expected? Why would I want a product that is damaged by its internal parts/battery and be expected to accept this outcome or situation? What else could have been damaged? What if I had not been home with the situation occurred; would I have lost my home, my pets, my things of value?

The product, in the report: Apple iPad “Retina Display” [Lightning Cable]
My iPad “lighting cable” melted last night. I keep the cord plugged into the Apple charging adapter (which plugs into 120V at the wall) at all times. I leave the smaller end lying on the table next to the iPad so I can quickly plug it to the iPad each night.
Last night, I picked up the small end and found it **extremely** hot. The entire cord was hot, and so was the adapter. The small end of the cable had actually melted.
I am afraid this could have caused a fire if I had not noticed the cable and unplugged it.
