The product, in the report: 2010 Polaris Ranger 800 XP EFI; side by side; VIN [REDACTED]; engine model number: 0120397314931; camouflage color
The consumer is filing a report on her unit which she feels poses a safety hazard.
On 10/01/14 the consumer’s husband turned the unit on and pushed the gas petal but the unit did not move. The consumer’s husband pushed the gas petal again and the unit instantly began moving at a 45-50 mph speed. The consumer’s husband then shut the unit off by manually using the key and switching it to “off” position. The consumer’s husband believes the pedal locked and caused the unit to go at such a high speed so quickly. After this incident the consumer and her husband have stopped using the unit.
The consumer believes the throttle cable that is located underneath the gas pedal is defective.
The consumer has taken the unit to a dealer once, every 2 years for maintenence.
The unit is used by the consumer and her husband. The unit is primarily used on the weekends and during the spring and fall season.
The consumer has not contacted the firm but will contact them.
The consumer does not feel safe using the unit.

The product, in the report: UTV
The consumer would like to file a report against his unit because he feels it poses both a safety and fire hazard.
10/01/2014 The consumer noticed that his unit was leaking gas. Christmas 2013 was the first time the consumer noticed that the six-gallon fuel tank, located under the passenger’s seat, leaked gas. At the time, he attributed the leakage to spillage or possibly when he pumped gas The unit only has 716 miles. It is only ridden during the winter time by the consumer’s daughter and wife. The consumer reports that as long the fuel tank is full, it will leak gas. He is only able to fill it half way to temporarily avoid the problem.
10/09/2014 The consumer contacted the retailer and explained to them that his unit was having the same issue as the ones he saw that were included in a recall (Alert #08-521). He was informed that his unit was not recalled. He was advised that it was out of their hands to fix the problem he was having. They told him that a new fuel tank would cost six hundred dollars. The consumer asked if they would adjust the price given the circumstance. He was told that he would have to pay the full price.
10/09/2014 The consumer contacted the manufacturer. After he explained his situation, he was told that since his unit was out of warranty and not included in the recall, there was nothing they could do for him. Again he was told that the price of a new fuel tank would be six hundred dollars.
The consumer reports that prior to this incident, he never had any issues with his unit and it always ran fine.
The consumer does not report any injuries to him or his family during this incident.

The product, in the report: 2012 Polaris Ranger Crew
I started my 2012 polaris ranger crew to load it on my trailer. It ran rough so I turned it off. I could smell a strong oder of gas. I removed the back seat cover to look at the engine and the gas line at the end was leaking onto the exhaust. Luck for me I had just started it and the exhaust was cool. When I checked the line it looked dry rotted. there were two holes in it and another place was cracking.

[REDACTED] and my brother took our Ranger to a neighbors home (about 5 block away) to check on him. He turned off the Polaris and, they went inside. They stayed for about 8 or 9 minutes. When they came back out the Ranger was on fire. The fire started under the bed. It melted a 14 to 18 inch whole in the bed where the bed meets the seat. The bed melted down on the wires and the exhaust. [REDACTED] had to use a water hose to put the fire out. I have read where they have recalls on other Polaris Ranger models for doing the same thing. We had our Polaris for almost 2 1/2 years when this happened. Right now we have our Polaris at the dealers to get a cost on what it will cost.

No one hurt Made Oct 22, 2013, sent to the company Oct 30, 2013, published by CPSC Nov 14, 2013
The product, in the report: 2012 Polaris Ranger RZR4 800 Bobby Gordon edition. Red four seater RZR.
I purchased a 2012 Polaris Ranger RZR4 on 12/22/2012. This vehicle was used a total of four times with less than 500 miles on it when the rear bed was melted by the exhaust pipe below it. At the time of the incident we were carrying fuel cans and ammunition in the cargo bed, both receiving damage from the heat generated. This could have easily resulted in a death or serious injury had it not been discovered during one of our stops. Polaris agreed to provide a replacement bed as “good will” but would not pay the $90.00 / Hr labor charge because it was outside the 6 month warranty period. this “Good Will” gesture was recanted after Polaris contacted the dealer to discuss the design flaw and the dealer refused to service the vehicle. When asked what would stop this from happening again they advised they put a heat shield over the exhaust pipe to keep this from happening. Upon inspecting the vehicle, I actually found that the heat shield was placed between the exhaust pipe and the motor. this provided no protection to the plastic bed above it. a search was also conducted online and found multiple other RZR owners experienced the same problem. Polaris has yet to provide any kind of fix to ensure that the vehicle is safe.

No one hurt Made Sep 23, 2013, sent to the company Oct 17, 2013, published by CPSC Oct 31, 2013
The product, in the report: 2013 Polaris Ranger 6x6 side-by-side ATV
Yesterday I went out hunting with my son and cousin. We were on a mountain with our 2013 Polaris Ranger 6x6. As per Polaris suggestion for using the parking break without blocking the wheels, I was careful to find a spot to park with very little incline and was sure to set my parking break. I would also note that there was very little if any wind at all. We were spotting animals for nearly 2 hours when the Ranger began to roll. By the time my cousin and I noticed that the vehicle was moving it was picking up speed and was headed directly for my son who was sitting above a 200 foot cliff. Luckily we were within shouting distance and were able to alert him and no one was injured but my nearly new Ranger was destroyed as it went over the cliff. We are thankful that we were not further away from him as this could have been more tragic than just being out thousands of dollars. We have been unable to recover the wreckage at this time.
We have since done a web search and noticed a fair amount of consumer dissatisfaction with the Polaris Ranger parking break. I was sure to inspect the parking break tension after 25 hours of run time along with the recommended oil change. Our question is whether we have any recourse with Polaris to help recoup the cost incurred to us over their faulty parking break design? We followed the manufacturer’s recommendations for safely parking the vehicle and would not expect such an incident such as this. I would like to see if there were more reports whether there should be a recall on these parking breaks and that some aftermarket repairs to these breaks aren’t warranted by Polaris for these ATVs cost more than some small cars. This can be very dangerous especially for hunters who typically have loaded firearms and additional fuel. This is a disaster waiting to happen.

The product, in the report: Polaris Ranger 800 Crew Utility Vehicle
The hazard: 2011 Polaris Ranger 800 Crew---Under normal driving condititons the motor/gas compartment gets so hot tthat the bottom plastic part of the seat over motor/gas compartment melts dropping melted plastic and seat parts onto exhaust header/ pipe, resulting in smoke and the possibility of burning causing a fire that could ignite gas line and gas tank in same compartment. This is a hazard that may result in death or serious injury.
The incident: On July 25th 2013 while driiving my Polaris Ranger on dirt mountain roads in Idaho, the seat over the motor/gas compartment melted, dripping melted plastic and seat parts onto the exhaust header/pipe. (My Polaries Ranger has not been modified in any way and still has the same motor settings coming from the factory, verified by a Polaris Dealer). After riding/driving for about four hours, the smell of burning materials and smoke was noted. I immediatly stopped and investigated the smoke. Upon raising the seat over the motor/gas compartment, I saw that the seat was melting and dropping plastic and other seat parts upon the exhaust header/pipe. This four hours of riding was on mountain dirt roads, level to 6% grades, climbing and descending at an average speed of 20-25 mph. During this four hour period there was a stop for lunch, and stops for berry picking and photos. The Ranger was shut off at each stop.

The product, in the report: 2012 Polaris Ranger RZR 570 side by side. (RED)
2012 Polaris Ranger RZR 570 atv.
I recently noticed I had a taillight out. I went to inspect the bulb and found a much larger problem.
The entire socket that the taillight bulb threads into was completely melted. On the outside of the taillight there is a visible bubble from the bulb getting so hot it bubbled the lens.
The vehicle was using the stock bulb and stock taillight. (Factory stock.)
I did some online research and found that many others have had this same issue for YEARS.
I’d imagine that this is a serious safety issue. Perhaps resulting in a fire, electrical shock, or even burns from touching the taillight.
I tried contacting the company (Polaris), but they didn’t offer any response.

I am the original owner of a 2008 polaris ranger rzr 800. the top[ of the fuel tank has been leaking and polaris’s only fix for this is to spend $600.00 on a new fuel tank. I have seen, heard and read about this problem which seems to be ongoing. I call polaris customer service and they told me that there is not a recall for this and to see the dealer for repairs. I have read atleast 100 reports on people complaining about this problem which can cause a fire. I have run out of patients talking with the polaris customer service and the dealer and have decided to give you folks a try. this problem is going to either hurt someone seriously or cause a death. this had begun in the month of June 2012.

The product, in the report: off road side by side sport utility vehicle
Polaris RZR is an off-road, side by side vehicle. There is a fuel leak around the fuel pump, under the passenger seat. There is a round metal plate where the fittings secure the fuel pump to the fuel tank. This is held on by 6 screws into the plastic. Evidently these are either not tight enough, or a poor design being screwed directly into the plastic, as the fuel leaks when the machine moves. My rzr is a 2008 model.

The product, in the report: 2012 Polaris Ranger RZR XP 900 Silver Utility Vehicle
Statement of Fact
Driver: [REDACTED] Date: 11/01/2012 Time: 1:15 pm Location: Oceano Dunes, Oceano, CA Vehicle: 2012 Polaris Ranger RZR XP 900 Liquid Silver VIN [REDACTED] Vehicle hrs: 3.5
Event Summary:
Arrived on the dunes approximately 12:15 pm with vehicle loaded on trailer. After parking, I started vehicle on trailer and reversed off trailer onto sand and parked vehicle beside truck and shut off vehicle. I accomplished the Pre-ride Inspection as detailed on page 52 of the operators manual. After verifying vehicle is in safe operating condition, I put on helmet, goggles, and gloves and strapped myself in seat and closed doors.
At approximately 12:45 pm, started vehicle and performed very casual driving in the dunes to warm up and get used to conditions and vehicle behavior. All appeared normal and vehicle operated normally.
At approximately 12:55 pm, went deeper into the dunes and climbed a few smaller hills followed by a few steeper hills. All driving up to this point has been per the manual’s recommended operating break-in instructions. All appeared normal with engine temps ranging between 185-205 degrees F.
At approximately 1:10 pm, stopped vehicle and set tire pressures to desired level. All appeared normal with vehicle along with normal indications on warning panel. No leaks or smells were observed.
At approximately 1:15 pm, restarted vehicle and proceeded to ride and continue the break-in process driving over several flat areas and a few moderate hills. Drove up final hill at approximately 1:22 pm as vehicle was running great at this point. Reaching summit of hill, turned vehicle and drove down same side with little to no throttle. When resuming acceleration at bottom of hill, I noticed the engine was completely off with no warning signs or indications. After coming to a stop at bottom, (approx 15 seconds after climbing hill) I immediately noticed over my right shoulder thick black smoke and flames extending approximately 4 feet tall shooting from top of rear cargo and engine area. Without delay, I unbuckled my safety belts, opened door and exited vehicle. Ran to a safe location. At 1:23 pm called 911. Emergency responded at location within 10 minutes. While on 911, I took pictures.
Looking at vehicle from short distance, I noticed flames were being fueled by some type of accelerant like gas or oil originating from top and left side of engine. Within 10 seconds of exiting, vehicle totally engulfed in raging flames. Took approximately 25-30 minutes for vehicle to burn down where flames were ultimately extinguished by fire department.
My post fire analysis revealed a dark colored trail in the sand near left tire tracks appearing to be either gas or oil originating at the summit of hill extend along tracks to vehicles resting spot. I have many pictures and 2 videos of fire and post fire scene including the trail of fuel/oil in sand leading to vehicle from hill.
All of the above statements are true and correct to the best of my recollection.

On 06/23/2012 my boyfriend and I were riding our 2008 Polaris Rzr 800 when it overturned to its side and an exposed bolt on the backside of the seatbelt mechanism tore off the top of my hand crushing my bones and ripping out my tendons and muscles. I believe this is a defect that needs attention from Polaris before other innocent individuals like me are hurt. My hand will never be the same. I’m in physical therapy 2 days a week and am scheduled for a second surgery on 07/30/12. I have a horrible scar and hardly any movement of my right hand which is my primary hand. On the newer Polaris Rzr models I have noticed that Polaris has made adjustments, so that this bolt is not as prominent, but that does not help us consumers that have older models and were unaware of this hazard! I did have my seatbelt on and we were not going fast or being reckless by any means when this accident occurred.

Polaris has a TSB notice for known heat issues that can cause melting and fire on their vehicle. This notice was never given to the consumer and the dealer never notified us. We had a total loss on our vehicle due to fire that was a known issue and could have caused death. this should be investigated immediately.
We smelt burning plastic and then noted the fire behind passanger seat, where their TSB notice suggests installation of the heat shield. Machine was well maintained and was during normal use. Fire destroyed, leaving nothing more than a bare frame with melted metal, nothing else at all.

The product, in the report: 2012 Polaris Ranger RZR XP 900 side by side atv RGR-12,RZR XP,900EFI,ORG/BLK
My wife and I were riding an ohv trail near Florence Arizona in our new 2012 Polaris Ranger RZR XP 900, along with friends and members of our ATV club. We left our campsite at about 10:30 am on or about Friday March 16, 2012 and had been on the trail maybe 4 hours and heading back to camp. We stopped a number of times for water and lunch break and to view the scenery. I was leading the group of 6, in an area called box canyon when my wife said she smelled something sweet, which I didn’t so we continued on. Box Canyon is a rocky area and we were traveling about 5-10 mph when suddenly the second in our group raced up to us yelling fire, fire. I immediately hit the brakes and we both exited and I immediately unstrapped the 2 gallon spare plastic gas can and raced it to a safe place then back to pull out my cargo chest that I also purchased (see pictures of before and after fire). Note that the gas can was on the driver’s side and away from the fire. Then we all worked (all 6 of us) throwing dirt at the fire on the rzr. The fire was finally extinguished by someone finding some water. The fire was very close to my wife’s head which you will read in the witness report (see witness letter). Please note; my wife and I also smelled gas fumes on occasions, inside the cab, on the return and other rides.
The fire was directly on the exhaust manifold/heat shield directly above the hole nearest the passenger seat of the cargo box. It appears as though that the fire was started from extreme engine and exhaust heat, melting the cargo box in this location which dripped plastic onto the exhaust manifold/heat shield (see pictures). As a flame developed it melted more plastic which made more fire which burned through my cargo chest which burned an ice chest and a tool carrying bag.
What is prompting my report is numerous and is all bout consumer safety. NOTE see letter to cpsc

2005 Polaris Ranger UTV. The heat shield under the plastic seat base came off and as a result, the seat base melted, exposing the foam inside the seat which could catch fire. As it is, when it is running, the foam produces fumes that have given my wife a headache and smell like something is about to burn.
I just got the vehicle (used) and did not notice the problem until I got it home and ran it a little while. Then I took off the seat to try to find the source of the smell and I saw the melted seat base and the exposed foam.

The product, in the report: Polaris Ranger 800 XP UTV Fuel Injected 4 X 4
I was driving my 2011 Polaris Ranger 800 XP UTV with my son and my wife as passengers. This is a 3 seat UTV. We were riding on the approved trails at approx. speeds of 20-30 MPH. I purchased the unit new March 15, 2011,. The factory warranty expired 09/15/11. The UTV has about 30 hours and less than 200 miles on it after this day of riding. While riding, I had to stop (3) three time because the seat was becoming hot on the passsenger side. The seat is secured by two molded plastic tabs in the front on the bottom. The heat caused the tabs to soften and bend. The seat came loose while under operation which could have caused us to crash. Upon examination of the under side of the seat, There is damage to the bottom molded plastic. The securing plastic posts are canted because of heating up. There is melted plastic on the bottom side of the molded plastic seat. The seat will no longer properly and safely secure back in place. I took the UTV back to the dealer. The machine was examined and found to be operating at normal temperature range. The dealer/Owner [REDACTED] at Motorsports Inc. in Hanover, PA indicated he had attended a Polaris seminar recently where Polaris made changes to the 2012 Model year to include additional thicker heat shielding on the bottom of the molded plastic seat, replaced the plastic molded securing posts with metal posts, and installed a bracket under the center part of the seat for additional support. He ordered the mentioned corrective upgrade parts feeling certain that Polaris would stand behind the upgrade parts. Polaris refused to pay telling them it was out of warranty (by 10 days). The dealeship suggested I contact POLARIS and express my safety concern directly. I spoke with a [REDACTED] at Polaris Customer Service [REDACTED]. I conveyed her my assigned case # [REDACTED]. She put me on hold for about 15 minutes and returned to the phone and advised she reviewed the case and POLARIS would not cover the parts. I conveyed my Safety Concern of a potential FIRE hazard but most imprtantly a LIFE SAFETY issue of the seat failing to stay secured while in motion due to the heat. I conveyed to her the information the dealer had told me and showed me on the conversion/changes to correct the problem on the 2012 model. She related that changes were nothing more than a model year change and had nothing to due with design or problem changes. She further related the conversion parts WOULD NOT EVEN BE COVERED IF UNDER WARRANTY. I am truly concern that this posses a potention Fire hazard as the plastic has melting. More improtantly, this a a SEVERE Life Safety Hazard if and when the seat posts fail and come unsecured causing the seat to come loose. POLARIS should be held accountable to provide all owners with an upgrade kit to render their product safe.

Seat post failure. On September 15th 2011 my wife was operating our 2011 Polaris Ranger 800 XP in Timberon , NM . Driving at approx 20 MPH a dog suddenly ran in front of the vehicle , my wife took evasive action by breaking forcefully , avoiding an accident. Once the breaks were applied the plastic seat post sheered off resulting in the seat cushion to slide forward . My wife was wearing a seat belt . The seat cushion slid forward , my wife struck her righ knee agains the dash , causing injury to the knee . My wife also injuried her neck as she was sliding forward the seat belt stopped her resulting in a sever jerk to her neck . We have tried to treat her neck with icy hot , tyenoal etc . We will call the doctor in the morning .
The sad part is that Polaris knew about the problem , did nothing except to sell a repair kit with metal post....and now my wife is seriously hurt . Her neck pain is not getting better and she now has numbness in her fingers The injury to her knee was very painfull be seems to be healing well .

The product, in the report: Polaris Ranger 800 XP Browning
I purchased a new 2011 Polaris Ranger 800 XP on 7/30/2011. My wife and I rode the UTV around our neighborhood for about 30 minutes that day at slow speeds. The floorbed and inside of the passenger compartment got extremely hot. My wife was wearing flip flops and could not keep her feet on the floor because of the heat. I was wearing a pair of Crocs and it was extremely uncomfortable to try to operate the accelerator. I changed to close toed shoes and it was tolerable. There was an extreme amount of heat coming from the front of the vehicle where the radiator and fan are located. The fan was blowing hot air through holes in the front of the passenger compartment.
The vertical wall of the passenger compartment below the seat was so hot I could not hold my hand on the surface.
The sales personnel at the dealership did not advise of any heat related issues. The Operations Manual does not mention any issues related to high levels of heat inside of the passenger compartment. There are no warning signs / labels inside the passenger compartment indicating potential heat issues.
We checked the internet on Sunday, 7/31/2011, and found that there were quite a few reports of excessive heat inside of the passenger compartment of the Polaris Ranger 800.
I registered a complaint with Polaris on 7/31/2011 and all they did was refer me back to the dealership. They indicated that the dealer was the most knowledgeable to address the issue which sounds absolutely unbelievable. Are you kidding me? I find it hard to believe that the manufacturer of a product with a manufacturing defect would say the dealer is more knowledgeable than the manufacturer of the product. Polaris did not even indicate that there was a potential heat issue or how to solve it.
