The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Char-Broil Patio Bistro 240 propane grill

I purchased a Char-Broil Patio Bistro 240 grill, model # 15601900 in June of 2025. The grill never seemed to work properly but as I had never used a propane powered grill before, I assumed there were just some things I needed to troubleshoot on my own to get it to work properly. The ignition button never seemed to work properly and would take numerous tries to get it to work. At some points, the grill would start so forcefully that the internal grill plate would lift itself up and then back down. I followed the instructions and troubleshooting information I found online, disconnected and reconnected the ignition mechanism, changed the batteries several times and even got a new propane tank at one point. The issue continued to happen and sometimes it would not ignite at all. I became frightened to continue trying to get it to work based on how forcefully it would start sometimes and noises it would make. I stopped using it altogether and put it away for the season. This season I tried to start it just once to see what would happen and it did not start at all. I even consulted with my neighbor and told him what had happened previously and he said that was definitely something that should not be happening and sounded dangerous. As I purchased the grill at a local hardware store in June of 2025, I know they will not accept a return for a refund. I also didn’t even attempt that because I felt that since this is clearly an issue on the manufacturer’s end, that it is something they should resolve. I reached out to Char-Broil and they told me they would only offer to possibly provide a replacement part. They admitted in our online chat that this sounded like an issue with “repeated delayed ignition and it sometimes causes an excess of propane buildup.” I told them I would not feel safe using the grill even if a replacement part was sent. They told me that was basically the only option and there were no options for a full or even partial refund. I reiterated several times how I feel this is a legitimate safety issue and could be specific to this particular grill. They continued to repeat that the only option that could be explored would be a replacement part even though I stated more than once that I no longer felt safe using this grill.

This year when I decided the grill could definitely no longer be used I did a little searching online and found almost right away that there was an issue with what I believe is this exact same type of grill back in 2013 and that a recall was issued. See link below.

The product, in the report: 5-Burner Gas Grill

    Issue Description:

After coating the grill plates with peanut oil to cure them, I heated the grill to maximum temperature for about an hour. Once the grill had cooled, I noticed that the internal structure had warped. This warping was so severe that three of the metal covers (heat tents) designed to hang over the flame emitters could no longer stay suspended via normal installation of them. Instead when installed as intended they would drop down on the back side of the grill and rest directly on the flame emitters.

    Concerns:

Unsuitability for High Temperature Use: The Char-Broil model 463448021-73 appears to be completely unsuited for high-temperature use. If a customer uses the grill at maximum temperature for between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours, the metal parts within the grill can irreparably warp. This deformation results in some of the heat tents no longer being able to stay suspended over the flame emitters, for where the heat tents are installed normally and fully inserted at the inside front of the grill.

    Safety Hazards:

    1. Falling Heat Tents: The inability of the heat tents to remain suspended poses a significant safety hazard. If the heat tents fall during high-temperature use, they could land on top of the flame emitters, which can result in uneven heating, potential flare-ups, and increased risk of fire or injury without the grill owner being aware that this has occurred.

    2. Potential for Undetected Damage: During prolonged high heat use, the heat tents might fall without the user noticing. This can create hazardous conditions that are not immediately apparent, further increasing the risk of injury or fire.

    3. Compromised Cooking Efficiency: With the heat tents unable to stay in place, the grill’s ability to distribute heat evenly is compromised, leading to potential cooking inconsistencies and safety concerns.

    Request for Immediate Action:

I urge a thorough investigation into this matter to ensure the safety of this and potentially other similar models. The potential for structural failure and the associated hazards necessitates a comprehensive review.

I request that the manufacturer review the design and material specifications of this model to address and rectify this critical safety concern. It is crucial to evaluate whether the materials used can withstand the maximum temperature settings for the recommended duration. What happens to this grill if its used at full temperature for 45 minutes? An hour? An hour and a half? Structural deformity resulting in heat tent failure & the tents falling onto the flame emitters?

My estimated heat time was about an hour. This grill is easily structurally damaged via normal operation, damage which can easily result from what many people would do with the unit. The unit at present is designed-to-fail with a usage workflow which could be engaged by many consumers by default.

Please transmit this report to both companies, Char-Broil and Lowes.

The product, in the report: Char Broil Patio Bistro LP gas grill

I recently took possession of a Char Broil Patio Bistro LP gas grill which was subject to recall in 2013 for possible burn hazard due to explosive ignition of gas. At that time, the company offered a replacement ignition-module repair kit, however the recall was not noticed and the repair was never made. My wife and I have experienced explosive ignition of gas from this grill on more than one occasion; fortunately no injuries have yet occurred. In trying to obtain the repair kit now, I have found that the manufacturer does not provide or sell it, and in fact continues to sell what appears to be the original defective/hazardous ignition module, as do other independent parts suppliers. I believe this constitutes a continued product hazard for consumers who are left with no other choice than to discard the grills, at a personal monetary loss, or risk injury as a result of the defective, now unrepairable, product.

Gas barbeque grill. The drain tray under the firebox rotted away above the propane tank, regulator, and hoses. Flaming grease dripped through the fire box and through the rotted tray to spill onto the hoses and regulator. The hoses burned through causing propane fueled fire. the pressure relief on the propane tank ruptured venting the whole tank under the flaming grill. We heard the pressure relief rupture and rushing gas, then extinguished flames with a kitchen fire extinguisher and garden hose and removed the propane tank while it vented the rest of its gas.

The product is a charbroil performance grill. The regulator does not connect to the propane tank correctly. When I turned on the tank gas leaked out through the connection. It was enough that I could feel it on my hand and hear it. The first time I connected it the leak was not as bad and I didn’t notice it. If that leak had started while I was barbecuing we could’ve had a very bad fire. Several of the reviews said they did have the grill catch fire. Charbroil is sending me another regulator in two months but I’m not sure I have confidence that it will be better.

The product, in the report: Advantage Series 4 Burner Gas Grill

The grill was purchased the day after Christmas. We waited to assemble it until the summer, when it would be needed. After several uses, we noticed this problem. It has had very little use for it to catch fire like this. When using grill, it catches fire violently. The entire bottom of the whole grill was on fire. And flames were shooting out quite high, demolishing the food within seconds of it catching fire. The food was simple burgers and hotdogs. After looking at product information, it was stated the grill needed to be cleaned out in between each use. Therefore, it was cleaned out very well, and then the same thing occurred again. It is extremely dangerous to operate in a regular basis. Routine food should not catch fire so quickly and so violently. The inside lining of the grill is also peeling off, which seems to be deteriorating the lining as well. We are scared to use this product at all.

Charbroil grill new, used 4 times, husband using grill handle so hot it slightly burned my husbands hand, the burner inside is too close to handle, emits extreme heat when lid is CLOSED and handle gets very hot. If a child were to hold the handle he would get severely burned. My husband did not because he let go. 2 potholders must be used to safeguard hands.

I attempted to relocate my char broil barbecue grill to the other side of my deck and put my hands on the back top of the top grill cover and cut my hand on the sharp edge of the lid. After inspecting the lid, I noticed that both corners had been welded with a very sharp edge which is a safety hazard and does not comply with the sharp edge safety guidelines of a product.

The product, in the report: Portable Propane Gas Grill

I purchased a Char-Broil portable grill Model #12401734 (Serial Number 50190601777) in December 2019. When I first attempted to use the grill I couldn’t figure out why propane was leaking from the regulator when in the “locked position” clearly indicated on the regulator. Thinking the problem might be with the individual 16oz propane canisters and not the regulator I tried three (3) different cannisters. Instructions are to screw the propane canister to the regulator and then insert & rotate regulator into the grill burner.

Fortunately I don’t smoke and my wife noticed the smell of gas when I walked into our camper. This is a definite hazard to anybody using this regulator. The “lock position” on the regulator does not stop the flow of propane out of the attached cannister.

A call to Char-Broil to the obviously defective regulator on 4/13/2020 was pointless. Rather than replace the regulator or address the problem I was charged $4.95 for a replacement regulator (I even offered to mail the defective regulator back to the company but they were not interested)

I went to light my grill and the grate blew up at my body and the flame came straight out at my body. My hair was singed, shirt has ash on it, right hand has mild burns. The grill will be one year old in May. I have not had problems until now. The gas is off and I left it the way it blew. The flame did extinguish itself after it blew the grate up and the flame out the front toward me. Charbroil TRU-INFRARD 240GAS PATIO Grill bought already assembled from Ace Hardware in Wilmington Ohio. Trying to get in touch with Charbroil without success.

The product, in the report: Portable outdoor gas grill

Charbroil grill2go x200 purchased approximately May 25 2019 returned to retailer approximately 2 weeks later 2 major problems both concerning the regulator control

    1. The grill, on low, would run over 600 degrees with no food inside, no grease fire, all from gas source

    2. After weeks of ownership the fuel began bypassing the control valve on the regulator. This led to fuel flowing into the grill with the odor of gas (propane scent) noticeable 30 feet away. This occurred when the grill was turned to lock which is an extension of the off position. Fuel bypassed the control valve into the burner which had not been lit yet and was unattended and assumed off for 15 minutes. All fuel components were checked at for leaks at time of connection and none were detected, meaning the failure occurred after the grill was inspected to be safe within minutes of the failure. After failure fuel was only noticeable as coming from the brass nozzle that is inserted into the burner with the valve confirmed again as still off AND locked. Valve was never handled with more than “fingertip” force and regulator never dropped or subjected to any damaging force since purchased.

    3. Charbroil customer service advised of issue and questioned if there was another revision to the regulator. Was advised that there were 2 revisions. CS advised that they could not trace by manufacture date code nor serial number what revision grill was equipped with when failure occurred.

    4. Not wanting another regulator that may have the exact problem, grill was returned for exchange of different model. Grill was purchased and returned to Lowe’s in Port Richey, FL. Lowe’s web page for the product shows reviewers making frequent complaints of overheating on low and other regulator related problems. Seemingly these are the only complaints about this product.

My Char-Broil outdoor propane gas grill caught fire due to a defect in design and materials. There is a metal plated attached to the bottom of the firebox (in which the burners are placed). That plate is made of thin metal and is not removable for cleaning. Most drippings flow to the center into an opening and to a can that can be attached for catching grease. The metal plate corroded and formed a circular hole allowing grease to flow onto the PROPANE TANK and exterior grill base and floor. EVEN WITH REGULAR CLEANING THAT GREASE CANNOT BE REMOVED. IT CAUGHT FIRE - AND COULD HAVE INJURED ME AND EXPLODED THE PROPANE TANK. I EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE AND WAS ABLE TO PREVENT A DISASTER.

On 2 occasions in 2018 and 1 in 2019 my Charbroil Tru Infrared model 463335115 had blown up in my face. It appears that the grilling surface has small slits to allow grease to drain through and after a couple of uses those slits get clogged up, then the propane gas collects underneath the grilling surface so when you push the igniter the grill explodes. The only way to clean the burnt on grease is to use a drill and a wire wheel to unclog the slits/holes and the grill stays unclogged for only a couple of uses.

I went inside the house for about 5 minutes to get the grill cleaner and when I came back out I saw fire under the far right burner knob. I immediately turned off the supply and then the burners. I then noticed the far right burner handle was on the ground. I picked it up... it was hot and it had partially melted.

I bought a Char-Broil grill on 6/14/18. I used it 4 times before a fire occurred in the right valve outside the intended area within six weeks of the purchase date. The knob that adjusted the flame melted and fire can be seen underneath the valve. Damage was caused to the grille itself. The company was contacted and opened a file up #[REDACTED]. Contact with the company via email and phone resulted in them sending me an entire replacement of the inner workings of the grille. I requested a new grille which they declined. I also asked for information as to who to report this incident to, they did not provide that information. I decided to report this to you because I learned yesterday at Habitat for Humanities Restore located in Buffalo, NY there was another Char Broil grill someone had donated that was being sold for parts. I noted the similar damage to the gas control knob on the grill and a fire had damaged that grille as well. I inquired of the manager and was informed that they had seen several Char-Broil grilles being donated to them that had had similar damage from fires outside the intended grill areas. I therefore felt an obligation to report this defective product that could have led to an injury if the propane gas continued to teak out of the valve and caused an explosion or bodily injury to someone. I have taken photos of the teak with flame on my grille as well as the damage it caused to Char-Broil. I have also taken a photo of the Char-Broil grill in the Habitat store for prosperity purposes and will be available should you request same. Judging by what I have learned recently it appears that this company is not reporting defective product of their grills that seem to be more prevalent than one knows. Thank you.

The product, in the report: 4 burner propane gas, outdoor grill with side burner

3 months ago we bought a Char-Broil Advantage 4 burner gas grill. This grill is a fire hazard! We just replaced a grill we’d had for 8 years with this one. We have had several raging fires in it ( we NEVER had a fire in our last grill, ever). After the first time, we cleaned the grill thoroughly and according to instructions-- I’d only cooked on it 5x at that point, so we were surprised to need to. Then we had another fire. Another cleaning. So on. Last night we had ANOTHER FIRE, one that required a fire extinguisher, it was the first cook since I last cleaned it. The grill was spotless when I started the burgers, but the flame is just positioned too close to the bottom and the grease drainage is woefully inadequate; grease collected while I cooked and erupted in flames. My husband used to be a firefighter and he can’t believe this design hasn’t been recalled! I now see SO MANY reviews online with the same complaint. I called the company and after submitting photos they claim it was my fault because there was too much grease in the bottom of the grill. The only great in the grill was the grease from the burgers I’d been cooking-- I had JUST cleaned it. Plus, I’ve only cooked on the grill a dozen or so times, and I’ve cleaned it several. CharBroil created a product that will catch fire if ther is any grease-- which is woefully inadequate for a BBQ grill! I guess the company is waiting for a tragedy or a lawsuit before changing anything.

I purchased a char broil grill from Lowes, model number 463625217, a few months ago. Within 2 weeks, the ignitor was no longer functioning. I contacted Char broil and replacement parts were mailed to me with no instructions.

I watched a few “You Tubes” on how to change ignitor and completed the process on my grill without difficulty. I went to turn grill on, and smoke began to come out from under where the replaced ignitor box was located, and then, flames began pouring out from where the ignitor box was located. I was trying to turn gas valve off of tank, but flames were preventing me from doing so. Finally, I was able to reach in to the tank and close the gas valve. The fire ceased.

I purchased the Char Broil Grill2go from Amazon. The first time I used it the temp. gauge melted. They sent me a new one. The second time I used it the gas bar and cooking grate melted. They sent me new parts along with a new regulator saying this would solve the problem. Installed all new parts with the same result. It pinned the gauge I shut it down. I contacted Char Broil and requested a refund or exchange for a safer charcoal grill and the customer service person [REDACTED] had the nerve to request that I take pictures of the grill parts melting. I declined and we ended the conversation at an impasse. Upon further investigation I see numerous other people have suffered terrible property damage from using Char Broil products. How can they be allowed to continue to sell these dangerous products. More importantly, how can a customer service person ask a consumer to fire up a dangerous product with a propane tank 3 inches away? PLEASE HELP!

Purchased a assembled Charbroil 3 burn quickset grill from Lowe’s in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Took home and checked out per instruction guide and attached to propane tank. Observed all precautions. The grill had a push-button ignitor. After opening the valve on the tank and with the grill top open, pushed the ignitor, The propane ignited in the based of the grill and then caught fire, moving down the connecting hose to the tank. Luckily I had an extinguisher close buy and was able to extinguish the fire. On examination, the valve attachment on the hose had a leak that allowed the propane under pressure to escape and catch fire.

I bought a Char-Broil Tru-Infrared 2-Burner Gas Grill from Walmart 6 months ago. The flame keeps going out and because you can’t see through the metal plates I can’t tell if it;’s still lit or not? When I check to see if the gas is still ignited by clicking the igniter, the gas explodes and pop’s the iron plates up into the air. I have tried resetting the gas regulator and when that didn’t work I even replaced the regulator, but my flame is still cutting out while still letting out gas and making a very dangerous situation.

The product, in the report: CharBroil Stainless Grille (2 burners) small grille w/propane standard I did not see any dates on the labels when manufactured, so dates below are estimated. Lowes should have dates on file with our purchases.

Charbroil Stainless Grill (small 2 burner), this product was purchased at Lowes store in 2016. I had incident last year when the grill caught on fire while using. I thought maybe I had the burners up to high and had grease fire, in which I needed to use my fire extinguisher to put out flames. I cleaned the grill after fire and continued to use occasionally. When using the grill this year I placed the burners at low temperature when using. I have noticed the burners are not sealed properly and at the front of the burners, their is leakage of propane and flames shoot out at the front. Needless to say I had another fire and I shut the grill down for good. I did go on-line to see if any complaints were made about my situation and found several of same complaints. This needs to be addressed by Charbroil immediately and recalled for the safety of the consumer. Thank you.

I purchased a Char-broil Bistro Gas Grill from Amazon (model number 15601900) about a month ago and in that short time of using it, the grill has simply had the burner flame go out by itself, on full head setting at least three times now. The item instructs that user to pre-heat it at least 5 minutes before use, and so I go out and light it as the instructions tell, but turning it to light position and pushing the electronic ignition until I hear the burner light (on this grill, one cannot see the burner flame, so all I can go on is the sound and the feeling of heat being produced). I then go inside to prepare the food that is to go on the grill. I come back out and the first two times, it was obvious as the temp meter had not moved. I turned it off, opened the grill to air out the gas that had built up (yes, the gas is still coming out when the burner flame has stopped), and then I do the procedure again and wait. The third time, it had apparently heated up some and then went out (again...the temp knob is set to the hottest setting)...so I did not notice that the flame had gone out. I opened the lid and must have caused a spark, because the grill top flew out of my hand and opened with a loud explosion and blew me backwards away from the grill. I did not notice that I had all the hair on my right arm sindged off up to my shoulder and that my watch has been been burned on the strap and had melted into my skin. This thing is a danger and should be recalled and fixed. I love the grill, it is the perfect size for us and cooks everything well ..but i afraid to use it.

On 2/19/2017 I lit my CharBroil gas grill to warm it up as I was preparing to BBQ. I was in the house about 5-10 minutes when I heard an explosion. I went outside to my deck to find the grill completely engulfed in flames. The fire dept. was called and they out it out with high pressure water hose. My deck, railing and roof were damaged. Luckily I was not standing in front of the grill when it exploded, if I was I would have been severely injured. CharBroil and their insurance company (Sedgwick) claim that the grill was not at fault. They have ignored my request for repairs to my damaged property. There is an obvious and dangerous problem with their grills, and they refuse to acknowledge it.

The product, in the report: Silver on the top, and black on the bottom. Intended to be used with LP Gas

On 4/13/17 at 01:45 hours, a structure fire was reported at the location provided. The fire was limited to a Char-Broil gas BBQ, and I was requested to investigate the origin and cause the following day.

    BBQ Information: Char-Broil, LLC Model # 463633316 SN # G361011602010083

The owners purchased the BBQ in October of 2016 from Walmart for about $100. The owners had used the BBQ about 7 hours prior to the fire. The BBQ reached 550 degrees or more before it was turned down by shutting off the right burner and leaving the left burner on. The food (fish in a marinade that included oil) was cooked once the BBQ reached around 350 degrees. The BBQ was in like new condition, and this was the first use, or one of the first uses. The owners turned off the BBQ after cooking (which was verified through observation during the investigation), but did not turn the LP cylinder valve off.

I conducted an origin and cause investigation, and observed the following: - Based on observed damage, patterns and indicators, it appears that the fire originated at or below the heat shield, which is below the fire box (where the food is cooked). It also appears that the fire originated somewhere along the hose between the regulator valve and the connection to the assembly that connects to the main burners, and probably occurred where the hose was touching or near the heat shield or cart side frame. Fragments of the hose and melted plastic and aluminum were discovered on the bottom shelf that holds the LP cylinder. Burn patterns indicate that the greatest damage occurred along the hose near the front left corner of the BBQ.

Based on the timeline of the fire, the probable cause of the fire was overheating of the hose initiating smoldering combustion that eventually caused the hose to be compromised and allowed LP gas to escape. It is probable that the smoldering combustion was the ignition source for the diffuse fuel of LP gas and air. Since the LP Gas container was on, there was a supply of fuel for the fire.

Although turning the LP cylinder valve off would have caused the fire to not continue, there still appears to be a potential safety concern of conductive or convective heat igniting the hose.

    Gas grill issues.

I purchased a charbroil 463268407 grill. It immediately had burner issues with the 2 TEC glass burners. I contacted Lowes and was told the unit should not have been sold and had been recalled. I contacted Charbroil back in about 2008 and had a battle on the phone with them about the safety of the grill. They sent me 2 burners and offered no help with installation even though it was less than 3 weeks old. They also sold me several hundred dollars worth of extra parts in case I needed them. I went back to Lowes a couple of months later and was told there was nothing they could do.

Finally in 2014, push came to shove and Lowes sent somebody out to repair the grill one again for the burner issues. Last summer, I could not turn the gas valves (I have used under 3 tanks of propane at this point) and was told the heat from the burners backfiring has caused the valves internally to expand and seize up.

I contacted Lowes who looked up the item number and transferred me to Charbroil. I explained everything to them (3 different people) and finally spoke with a manager who treated me like I wanted something for nothing. Safety is very important to me and was willing to ship unit or parts back to them so they could see who the gas valve seized. I live in Texas so major cold or rust is not an issue. He would hear nothing except to say he would send new burners and I would have to buy the other repair parts. He then eluded to a 75.00 trade in for a 1000.00 plus grill. I purchased the best grill that was on the market and have had issue after issue with it. The customer rep when I told him I was disabled, said can’t your wife fix it? I explained that working with propane is something that an inexperienced person should not “mess” with.

For the record, I can afford to buy any grill I want to. As with my customers, they expect to get their moneys worth. I am reporting this on the safety aspect and not the financial. Charbroil automatically thinks you are out for something for free.

You need to investigate the replacement burners and the gas valves due to fatigue and heat stress.

I bought a Char-Broil grill and set it up. This is a tabletop model with Model # 465133005 which is sold at both Lowes and Ace Hardware in different boxes . Here is my video on youtube.

Here is Char-Broil’s response to my complaint. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thank you for contacting Char-Broil.

We apologize for the issues you’ve had with these tabletop grills. You are a valued Char-Broil customer and we want you to not only enjoy using our products, but feel safe while doing so. Fortunately, this is something that can easily be corrected, and we would be happy to help you with this. After reviewing your video, the reason you are getting turbulence in the burner’s venturi tube is because the propane bottle is not flush with the unit and has no support. The grill will either need to be steadied in a way that the bottle lines up with the unit, or we recommend placing something underneath the LP bottle to support it and even out the connection.

If you have any questions or encounter any further issues, please give us a call at the number below and we will be able to best assist.

We appreciate your business. If you have any further questions you may contact us by either visiting www.charbroil.com or by phone at 1-800-241-7548. Our hours of operation are Monday through Friday 8am to 6pm EST, and 9am to 3pm EST on Saturday.

    Sincerely,

    [REDACTED] Char-Broil Grill Service Specialist

----------------------------------------------------------------------------- I got a 2nd email directly after this one that with none in between that states case closed.

The video may not convey the flushness of their brass fitting but I have tried this grill with 2 different valves and have pressed the brass fitting all the way in which is held in only by a dimple on the burner and a slot on the brass to allow it to go in. The design of this fitting and the dimple is so loose that it can be either pulled out or fall out without the slot in the brass fitting aligning with the detente dimple. This horrendous design while it back feeds and ignites in what Char-Broil refers to as a venturi the square hole which makes a rushing sound when it is ignited there can also actually light the valve outlet of the propane on fire too when the valve slides out entirely from the dimpled burner. At that point you have short barrelled propane torch in your hand or its rolling around on the ground. I returned both grills to Lowes 2 days ago as I was sick of the problem. I was lucky they gave me store credit. They were bought from different lots too. It doesn’t matter which position you attempt to put the brass fitting in as I tried placing it further out and further in completely flush and have the bottle up right or to front or back and this problem continues. There is no magical flush position to stop this backflow ignition of the gas into the venturi. What I call a air mixing bleed hole which is square. The video was taken about 6:30 AM in the morning as the light was coming up to be able to see this burning problem not seen in the daylight hours.

Here is a similar review on amazon about its behavior.

    2) The dealbreaker: the grill kept “backflashing”. This means that the flame would jump from outside the gas delivery tube (think the “spider legs”, where they’re supposed to be) to INSIDE the gas delivery tube. When this happened, there would be an initial flash backwards, towards the regulator/dial/fuel canister. Not safe. Then, you would hear a high pitched sound like a jet engine and the flame would be burning inside the tube. The instructions say this can happen if a spider spins a web inside the tube creating an obstruction to the flow of gas, but this happened to me right out of the box. This doesn’t seem safe and I think eventually the gas delivery tube will fail, or the regulator will fail, because neither are designed to take direct flame.

    and another reviewer said

Ok, so I bought this grill last week with plans to take it to a football game and do some tailgaiting. Put the grill together during the week, which was pretty easy, but the grill is CHEAP!! can’t expect much for the price. Bought some propane to try out the grill on Saturday morning and the grill was making a loud hissing noise and I couln’t see the flames. Tried several more times to get the grill lit without the hissing noise and was unsuccesful. Finally decided to call Charbroil and was told the grill is defective and they will send me out a new one. Have spent the last 3 days back and forth with Charbroil, getting the run around, ridiculous. If I do ever get my replacement I’ll probably just give it away because this thing is a piece of crap. I’d return it but tossed the box and don’t feel like deeling with repacking for the $20 refund. What a joke, do not buy. and another reviewer said

We bought this grill for a camping trip. We built it on site. Overtime we tried to make it work it would make loud blowing noises; flare sounds like the gas would light all at once and then stop. It was simply a frightening experience. We called the help number, we tried everything they said and still nothing worked. I called them again explain the situation and they narrowed the problem down to the regulator. They said they were going to send us a new regulator within the week. We were hungry and angry and found other ways to cook our food for the weekend of our camping trip. They sent us a new regulator a week later but that still did not work. Even new propane tanks didn’t make it work. This is the worst grill I could have ever purchased, and I feel lucky it didn’t blow up in our faces.

and another under 2 star reviews mentions

The back-flame issue others mention is clearly a design flaw. My grill did it within seconds of being lit, does it every few minutes, and does it about every other time I lift the lid. A quick puff of air on the gas tube usually clears it out, but that leads to the next problem... This thing blows out way too easily. I can’t imagine trying to use it in a windy place - it sometimes goes out just taking the lid on and off. I bet I could make it back-flame or go out just by thinking about it.

and another It also has a habit of randomly making loud jet blaster noises whilst grilling.

    and another

When we used this we kept getting flare ups near the neck of the gas bottle.

    and another

On our last outing, about 12 uses, the regulator valve got very hard to turn, and wouldnt press in. After looking at it a few days later, the knob broke off... I can see fire in the little hole next to it where the air gets mixed...

    and another

The grill is a nice design, but the quality control stinks. I must have a bad burner, because the flame sometimes goes inside the burner. I can tell because it gets much louder and puts out less heat. If I cover the air intake holes with an oven mitt, it starves the inside of air, and I get a bright orange flame on the outside of the burner; then I uncover the holes and it goes back to a normal blue flame. This happens fairly often at random times, so I can’t use the grill for roasting or anything like that. For steaks and burgers I just stay at the grill and babysit the entire time they’re cooking.

In addition to my experience many of the reviews mention experiences with a valve (regulator) that was broken or would not stop leaking or delivering gas at what seemed full on status. They had experiences with no being able to shut the valve (regulator) off. If you combine the feature (flaw) mine has where the actual fire will go all the way back to the regulator and it comes lose from the burner as in the short barrelled torch I mentioned with the feature (flaw) of not being to turn off the regulator how would it take until the either the cheaply designed valve(regulator) melts or heats up the bottle or leads to something worse if they haven’t screwed the bottle on tight enough.

I just wonder how anyone is allowed to import such trash as this grill and sell it here and then claim it has not problem its ,”the reason you are getting turbulence in the burner’s venturi tube is because the propane bottle is not flush with the unit and has no support.” , when they built the thing with no support for the bottle other than the valve sitting in the burner with a small dimple which doesn’t hold it flush anyway. This not a scew on connection and various types of past similar designs included a clip to hold this regulator in place. These are not designed to have the bottle held by anything ever. The best brand Weber expects one to use the grill in such a manner. This the difference between buying one that costs 2 to 3 times as much as a cheap Chinese designed and built knock off. Its barely even that.

On September 4, Labor Day, I lit my grill to use for the day. After sitting for a few moments in a chair I noticed white smoke coming from out the open back of the grill. I was facing the front of the grill so I opened the door that exposed the tank and connecting valve. The connection was on fire. It was melting the plastic knob. Having been a fireman I soaked a kitchen towel and wrapped it around the union to smother the flames. I then turned off the valve on the tank. I checked to see if the connection to the valve from the tank was loose, but it was tight. I haven’t used the grill since. I went online to your sight and found that this company has had this same problem on other models.

They insist they do not paint the inside of the lid and claim it is carbon build up. When the new lid arrived, it is confirmed that the inside lid is indeed coated in black enamel paint. As most of us know, sheet metal does not come out of the factory with black & red enamel paint on it. I have pictures and will hold the old lid & the new lid until I am contacted by you. This product should be recalled and consumers should be reimbursed for the cost of it. I can only hope that we, and anyone else, has not ingested the peeled paint from the lid.

The consumer indicates that as soon as she turned the grill on, it blew up in flames about a foot high. Her deck was scorched but thankfully the consumer was unharmed. The consumer immediately turned the gas off and it went out.

The consumer contacted the manufacturer and explained the situation. The representative she spoke to requested photographs. After the photographs were reviewed, she was informed that they would not assist her in any way as the accident was her fault’ apparently the consumer had to place the grill grates in the dishwasher so food debris would not accumulate. The consumer asked if the information that she was given was included in the Owner’s Manual but she was informed that it is not.

The consumer indicates that prior to the incident she would use the unit every other day during Summer.

Our Char Broil gas bbq almost caused our house to burn down.

I had lit the grill and gone inside to retrieve the food. Apparently holes developed in the metal tube connecting the rubber gas line to the burners. There is evidence of charring under the grill, so flames must have been coming out of the tube. It appears that those flames melted the gas line, then ignited the gas flowing out of the severed gas line. (It must have been flames, not just heat from the bbq, otherwise the gas wouldn’t have ignited.) The propane bottle, unrestrained by the gas line fell over. The lit gas line acted like a flame thrower, hurling flames at our house. Fortunately it had rained so the house was wet and we were able to grab a fire extinguisher and put this out. What a disaster.

The consumer said that the handle gets extremely hot when the grill is in use. The handle is made of a hollow stainless steel and it is not insulated from the stainless steel top. The consumer nearly burned his hand, but let go of the handle in enough time to prevent any injuries.

7/25/16: The consumer called the mfr. and told their rep. ([REDACTED], last name unknown) about his concerns. The consumer was placed on hold and when [REDACTED] returned, he informed the consumer that the grill was designed that way. He suggested that the consumer use grill gloves to prevent any injuries. The consumer informed him that he would contact the CPSC about his concerns.

    * The consumer used the grill once, but he was cooking hot dogs, it didn’t get that hot. * His daughter used the grill and mentioned how hot the handle got, but was not injured. * The consumer’s son used the grill and nearly burned his hand on the handle.

The consumer believes that this situation could lead to a burn hazard.

On Sunday, June 19th, 2016, I seriously cut my right middle finger on a Char-Broil 3-Burner Stainless Steel Gas Grill (Model #463241314). As it was a deep cut and was bleeding badly, I had to go to the Emergency Room immediately where I received liquid stitches and a Tetanus shot.

The cut was caused by a sharp piece of sheet metal located under the grill. It occurred when I was trying to replace the grill cover back on the grill.

The next day, I contact Char-Broil online and they were not overly concerned about my health or the safety of their product.

I am concerned that many others will get hurt, more seriously than me. I had an incidental cut on my finger. It could have been worse. The cut could have been deeper or occurred on multiple fingers, my palm or on my wrist.

Char-Broil needs to be made accountable for the unsafe construction of their product.

It seared my eyelashes to half the length, my eyebrows and the hair around my face was seared off. If my hair (which is long) had not been pulled back it would have been a lot worse. The grill grate popped up and there was a large fireball when it did ignite.

This grill has igniter problems. The flame is unstable and the gas builds up below the burner grate. This causes an explosion when restarting. This has happened 2 times now. The grill pan was blown at least 2 feet in the air and the fireball was at least that large. I contacted Charbroil after the first explosion to find repair parts for the igniter. They were no help and couldn’t tell me what parts to order. The gas tank placement is also unsafe, I burned my arm 2 weeks ago when turning off the gas. I now have a scar from the burn. These are immediate issues that need to be addressed. The grill all has rust problems with the grease pan and the grill grate. The igniter malfunctioned within the first 10 uses, the grill pan rusted within a couple of months along with the grease pan.

Purchased a barbecue grill from Lowe’s on 12/24/2014. On February 15, 2016 my wife opened the lid on the barbecue grill which shifted the weight to the rear. As soon as this happened the back wheels collapsed inward towards the front of the barbecue grill. The barbecue rolled backwards and off of our patio onto the stone deck below. My wife was injured trying to grab the handle and save the grill from going over. Worse- the propane tank was inside and likely could have been ruptured. The grill was mangled completely. My wife has pain in her shoulder which we are trying to see a doctor for this week. Had a person been in the path of this extremely heavy barbecue grill there could have been a life threatening incident. Had the grill been lit at that point there could have been a fire. This is extremely worrisome. The grill was purchased from Lowe’s and was delivered completely assembled by the store.

The consumer stated he was using the grill to cook some hamburgers.

He stated that the way the grill is designed, the propane gas tank hangs over the table where the grill sits.

The consumer moved the burgers to the side where the tank is located. The consumer stated that the grill flipped off of the table. As the grill was falling, the consumer grabbed onto the propane gas tank. The consumer stated that the tank came loose and caused a large flame (about 2-2.5 ft).

The consumer stated that there is a safety hazard with the way the grill is designed.

The consumer will also contact the manf and inform them about the issue.

The consumer notified the manufacturer of the incident. Their response was that the tank could be turned at an angle so it rests on the table however fuel efficiency might be negatively affected.

They further stated that the design meets all safety standards and no further action would be taken.

The simple solution would be to make the legs of the grill long enough to allow the tank to remain vertical while sitting fully on the table.

We bought a gas grill, Model Char-Broil Classic C-59G4-463252113, in June 2013. We used it three times. On Dec. 5, 2013, we tried to use the barbecue (the fourth time.) While cooking, the grill melted the middle knob, a wire inside the grill caught on fire and melted, and flames darted out from the front of the grill through an opening in the front.

Char Broil called it a [REDACTED] fire and requested that we send photos, which we did. The company refused to do anything but sell us a new knob and new wire. They claimed that the fire was caused by an obstruction in a conduit (we removed the conduit and saw no obstruction) probably a spider web, they said.

This dangerous product should be removed from the market.

The product, in the report: Char-broil Quickset 2-burner gas grill

I am contacting you to report a safety issue with a Char-broil Quickset grill purchased from Lowe’s. The grill caught on fire after only the 2nd time of use. It was clean and kept covered during unuse. Went inside to get the meat to put on, and when I returned, flames were pouring out the front and sides. I couldn’t turn the grill off because the knobs had melted, disintegrated, and fallen off. Heat was so hot it also melted the ignituion button. The only way I was able to extinguish the fire enough to turn it off directly at the propane tank was by spraying water on it. The grill is now unusable. I am so glad I had pulled the grill two feet away from my house, because my 12 yr old was inside the adjoining room and I shudder to think what could have happened if the tank had exploded or the the house caught fire. This grill is a safety hazard and needs to be removed from the market or recalled. While checking online, I found over 100 similar incidents and complaints reported on Char-broil grills at http://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/char-broil.html?page=2. This company is being irresponsible by ignoring the multipe incidents and acting like it is consumer error. This is only the small handful of people who reported the issues. Many people do not report incidents.

The product, in the report: Char-Broil 4-burner grill, model no 463440109

Purchased a new Char-Broil Gas Grill in mid July. Had difficulty connecting the gas nozzle to the LP gas tank. After 30+minutes finally thought had it connected without obvious leak but ensure turn gas off at tank after every use and check for leaks when turn it on. On Thursday, 22 AUG turned gas on at tank and immediately heard hissing sound and smelled gas. Turned gas off and tried to tighten but nozzle was on as far as would go . Tried turning on and hissing was diminished but still present. Turned off again. There is an obvious problem with the design of the nozzle, it is incapable of making a secure connection to the LP gas tank leading to a very hazardous condition if not noticed by the consumer. I’ve never seen an LP nozzle this difficult to connect.

I was using my Char-Broil “Gas Patio Bistro” Grill. I turned it on to the ‘click-click-click” ignition sound and I heard the gas ignite. I shut the lid and walked away to let the grill heat up. When I returned a few minutes later to check the grill and put on my chicken if it was hot. I smelled gas. I went to turn the grill off immediately and quickly. In turning off the grill, you have to scroll the knob past the ignition portion of the switch. As the knob went past this section, the grill exploded and blew the top off of the grill. As this happened. I felt a significant impact of the blast against my chest. The hair on both of my arms and some of my facial hair and hair on my head was singed. While some of my skin was red and mildly burned like a sun burn, I did not sustain any severe burns. I could feel the impact on my chest from the blast for about 2 hours.

The product, in the report: Char-Broil TRU (TM) Infrared Patio Bistro Gas (LP)

I just wrote you a lengthy note thru Char-Broil “contact us” option. Then I noticed the recall catagory. and my model # 12601558 was on it. Here is what I wrote them explaining my unfortunate incident. ........My roomate got this grill as a gift and the infrared emitter grill is dangerous! I was lighting the grill and it exploded in my face. You can’t see if there is a flame and the type of grill makes the gas trapped and in only seconds the gas builds and when igniting, it exploded. The grill actually blew up over 3 inches high and slammed back down making flames burst out from the front because the front of the grill lifted more aiming flames directly onto my face and hair. The worst is I happen to inhale from the shock and the flames burnt deep into my nose...VERY PAINFUL!!! I have pictures of my nose with 2nd degree burns and it set my hair on fire. The pain was the worst pain I have ever felt. I suffered severly for over 3 weeks during the healing process. It could have been so much worse but my hair was damp from the pool, Lucky for both of us! It effected my job and my appearance along with the pain left me depressed and unable face people, it was quite awful looking. I notice you no longer have that grill on any of your products now. I want to know how Char-Broil wants to handle this. I am a victim of a faulty product of yours and hope you will take this serious as I do and I will take further action if Char-Broil fails to address this serious situation. I would like to send the pictures so you can see what your product did to me. I am sure Char-Broil is a upstanding company and will take care of this in a professional fashion. I look forward to hearing back as soon as possible! Regretfully [REDACTED]

The consumer says that on August 10th she was having a barbecue. She turned on the gas and then the ignitor. Within a few seconds she heard a loud “boom” and the grill portion flew up and hit her in the arm. She says that their was no reason for this to happen.

She turned it off immediately and has not used it since. She then got a recall notice sent directly from the retailer. The consumer says the “boom” was so loud that neighbors came to her asking if she was ok. She has a mark on her elbow from where she was hit. One neighbor saw the grill fly up when this happened

After hearing a few clicks, the flame wasn’t turning on so I turned the knob back to the off position and turned off the gas. I then turned the gas back on and turned the knob to ignition again. This time, I leaned over to peek inside the grill to see if the flame was on and instantly, there was an explosion that burned my eyebrows and the front of my hair. I had glasses on at the time so my eyes were not hurt.

The product, in the report: Small LP gas grill

I have the Char Broil Patio Bistro gas grill that you issued a recall on yesterday. I think you really need to get these off the market completely and here is why.

Several times I have started my grill thinking it was lit only to come out later and find that is isn’t ignited and the grill is full of raw unlit propane. DANGEROUS!

Also, the gas knob is easy to turn on by mistake. We keep our under a cover and one day I came out, took the cover off and the knob was not quite off and gas had built up under the cover. Static electricity made the raw gas flash! I could have been hurt pretty bad had the gas been on for several days.

I’m 57 years old and have been using gas grills since I was a kid and this is without a doubt the most dangerous gas grill I have ever owned. PLEASE do a total recall of this poorly designed product before someone gets seriously hurt.

    Thanks

My product issue has been during normal use. As I’m warming up my gas grill, or even during normal cooking, I have the control knobs turned to high. When I go to turn the flames down from high the plastic control knobs are so hot that I have received 1st degree burns on my fingers. This has happened to me on several occasions and has also happened to guests I have had over helping me cook on the grill. This Depends on the amount of time I have allowed the grill to warm up or the amount of time the food is cooking on high heat. There is also a “clean” feature on this grill that leaves the burners on for a lengthy period of time which also causes the knobs to get dangerously hot enough to cause burns. This has happened on several occasions and can longer use my product because of this HUGE liability of injury that this product has caused to me and my family.

In doing research I have found that the new model released in the last year has a design change that appears to remedy the issue I am currently having. The knobs on my grill are very close to the grill surface and heat exit of lid therefore causing them to get to an extremely unsafe temperature. The new model has these knobs moved significantly lower and further out from the grill/lid surface. This appears to be a resolution to the safety condition I am experiencing.

We purchased a Char-Broil grill and followed the pre-use instructions. After using the grill the first time, (6/16/13) I burned off the food residue according to the manufacturer’s instructions. I also decided to wash the cooking grates, to wash off the charred food particles and help keep the grates like new. I noticed particles flaking off like paint while giving the grates a final rinse. The grates are porcelain, and so it should not have been paint. My husband and I were not sure what the material was. On 6/17/13 I called the manufacturer, and received replacement grates. I again followed the pre-use instructions before cooking, and afterwards, to burn away the food residue. It did not appear that there was the same material flaking off, but this time, sharp pieces of metal came off the grates. They could easily get onto food and not be noticed. I feel this performance is unacceptable and so therefore, I reported it.

The product, in the report: Char-Broil Patio Bistro TRU Infrared Gas (LP) Grill

I purchased a CharBroil Patio Bistro TRU-Infrared Gas Grill (Model 126015 Series) from The Home Depot online that was delivered to my home on/about June 6, 2013. Upon opening the packing box and before assembling the unit, I noticed that the valve was not correctly positioned inside the burner tube (where the valve coming from the gas supply meets the aerated burner tube which then leads into the kettle) I carefully but firmly repositioned the two parts into the correct position. There is no hard connecting point here, just a matter of positioning the two gas lines to ensure proper gas flow. THIS IS NOT COVERED IN THE ASSEMBLY GUIDE OR THE GRILLING GUIDE THAT CAME WITH THE PRODUCT, HOWEVER, AND IS ONLY MENTIONED IN THE PRODUCT GUIDE UNDER THE SECTION ON “CLEANING THE BURNER ASSEMBLY” ON PAGE 9. THE CONSUMER SHOULD BE EXPRESSLY WARNED TO CHECK THIS PARTICULAR VALVE/BURNER TUBE ASSEMBLY EACH TIME THE GRILL IS USED AND SHOULD BE WARNED OF THE DISTINCT POSSIBILITY OF A SEVERE AND INTENSE FIRE.

Problem 1: An inexperienced assembler would not necessarily notice that the valve was not positioned correctly into the burner tube while unpacking the unit from the original box which was exactly the situation I faced. I suspect the proper alignment was dislodged during routine handling and shipping. That misalignment can produce a serious fire hazard WHICH I LEARNED THE HARD WAY SHORTLY AFTERWARD (see next paragraph).

After first assembling the grill per the Assembly Guide and connecting a new 20# propane tank, I used the grill on 3 or 4 occasions during the remainder of June without any problems. The assembly worked perfectly and the grill lived up to the good reviews we had read. However, on July 4th, I gently moved the grill approximately one foot (the grill is equipped with wheels for the express purpose of moving it) to make room for other items on our rear deck and prepared for a family cookout. UNBEKNOWNST TO ME, the valve/burner tube “fitting” described above became dislodged. I started the grill with the electronic igniter and brought the grill up to cooking temperature per the instructions . I left the grill for appromixately 2-3 minutes to bring food from the kitchen to the deck to cook. As I was loading my first food items, I realized that an intense fireball, approximately 6 inches in diameter, was roaring directly under the heat control unit and coming from valve/burner tube assembly area. The fire had already severely damaged the control assembly, had burned through the igniter wires, and was rapidly devouring the gas supply line from the propane tank. I first grabbed the burner controller which had already warped from the heat and was “frozen” in place (i.e., useless at this point) and then immediately reached underneath the fireball to turn off the gas from the tank (praying that the fire wouldn’t reach the propane tank itself). The grill and fully charged propane tank were less than 15 feet from the back door to my home and family during this episode.

Needless to say, the grill is now ruined. The gas feeder hose from the tank, the entire control assembly, and the igniter assembly are completely burned and unusable. I do not trust this grill and will not have it near my family in the future.

Problem 2: Even an experienced person may not know how to control or extinguish a fire that can start so easily and was caused simply by moving the grill one foot and inadvertantly jostling a critical mating of gas lines (again there is no hard connection; the two lines are simply nestled together). The engineering of this connection should be examined and changed. Clear warnings of possible fire based on my very real expereince should be provided to the consumer.

I have contacted the Arlington County, Virginia, Fire Department/Fire Prevention Unit and am copying their representative on this email. I am also submitting a copy of this communciation and reporting this incident to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission using their online reporting system (the action being taken here).

I have asked The Home Depot to have a Customer Service Representative contact me to discuss how best to return my burned out yet “still new” grill. I am equally concerned that other consumers be made aware of this dangerous situation which in my case became a real incident even when I followed all published safety procedures. I will henceforth check the valve/burner supply connection before each use with any grill that I purchase and use in the future.

    Sincerely,

    [REDACTED]

The consumer stated that since purchase whenever the gas grill was in use flames would erupt from the front burners. There would be large flash of flame which at one time caused him to receive minor burns to his arm. He did not need medical attention. He stopped using the grill because of the safety hazard it poses.

7/8/13 The manufacturer was contacted and he was advised that the product is being investigated and should not use the grill.

The model for the gas grill is not related to any recalls. Char-Broil identified a possible safety issue with grill of this model and serial number. They have, in fact, instructed retailers of same grill to remove them from floor and return them to Char-Broil

    RE: Char-Broil TEC grill Model 463268307 S/N G508010704002246

I have had this problem on this grill on two occasions.

With a mild breeze coming in from the backside of the unit the controls on the front panel get hot enough to burn the fingers, hot enough to melt the knobs and trim and the electric igniter gets so hot that it has exploded. The explosion is the result of the battery inside overheating. The explosion cause the parts of the igniter to be shot directly into the face of the operator.

I replaced these parts once but the problem reoccurred. I just spoke to the manufacturer and their response is to not use the grill in the presence of wind. This is an outdoor device and there is always the possibility of a breeze outdoors. I have another similar grill from another manufacturer that does not have this problem since it incorporates a simple heat shield between the burners and the controls.

The product, in the report: Char-Broil Gas Patio Bristo, model #12601558

My concerns are in regard to the Char-Broil Gas Patio Bistro, model #12601558.

I would categorize two safety concerns with this bbq. The first is the cooking grill. It is a stainless steel accordian/fan type design with small perforated holes. While it’s not completely solid it is enough that it traps propane underneath it if the flame goes out and the knob on the bbq is still on. You also can’t see enough through the grill to see if the flame/element is lit which is also tricky when trying to ensure that it’s lit or not. The second concern is the design of the controls on the knob. To turn off the gas flow into the bbq with its knob, you have to go by the ignition setting. So what has happened to me on 3 different occasions is that I’m pre-heating the grill, I go out and see/feel that it’s not heating, so I turn the knob off, and it just hits the ignitor enough to explode the trapped propane. While I’ve been fortunate not to have been burned, I have lost some facial and forearm hair. When this happens it also projects the cooking grill from the bbq.

The propane barbecue has one knob controlling ignition and gas flow. When turning the knob to ignition and then to gas flow it seemed that the barbecue did not ignite. I therefore turned the knob to off but cycled past the ignition point which blew the barbecue grate into the air. Seems poorly designed and that the ignition and gas flow should be on separate controls. It is a Char-Broil Patio Bistro barbecue.

The consumer says that if someone has there head over the grill when this occurs it could pose a serious hazard. The only way to avoid this from happening is by turning off the tank. The consumer says that no where in there literature do they talk about this problem.

The consumer has yet to contact the manufacturer.

    Char-Broil Patio Bistro Gas Grill

I purchased the above model grill from Amazon on May 23, 2012. Yesterday I had an incident while using the grill. After the grill was lit and warming up, for some reason the flame went out. I noticed this because after about 5 minutes, the grill was cold. I went to turn off the gas and the explosion that resulted could have seriously injured me. I firmly believe had the cover been closed, which is what I normally do when warming up the grill, it is probable that a serious perhaps even a fatal injury could have occurred.

The grill has a design defect that must be corrected. Until this defect is corrected, the grill should be removed from the market. I am certain others must have experienced this problem.

The design defect is as follows: When you turn on the grill using the control knob, the first position you come to is the igniter. This ignites the gas. The problem and defect is that if for any reason the flames goes off, gas continues to flow into the grill. When you go to turn off the gas, you must pass the same igniter position to turn the gas off. This ignites any accumulated gas causing a potential life threatening situation. I believe this grill should be removed from the market.

My gas grill caught fire at the knobs that shut off the gas.

Above the burners are “flame tamer” shields. They are supported by a thin angle iron ledge. The ledge rusted allowing the “flame Tamers to fall onto the gas burners. This caused a gas leak at the end of the burners that allowed the gas to escape and catch fire around the knobs used to control the temperature and shut off the gas.

The product, in the report: Char Broil Commercial Series (Infrared Gas Grill)

I have owned a Char-Broil Commercial Series infrared grill for almost 3 years, so it is beyond the 2 year warranty. Recently when removing the grill grates, emitter surfaces and flame tamers for cleaning I noted that the firebox flange which supports the flame tamers had corroded sufficiently to become detached from the firebox itself as the welds attaching it were completely destroyed. This allowed the flame tamers to drop closer to the burners which I believed might create a safety hazard. In June I reported this to Char-Broil through an on-line chat at their website and the technician I chatted with agreed that it may make the grill less safe. He offered to sell a replacement firebox but could not tell me whether the firebox had been revised to prevent this problem from recurring 2½ years from now. He also suggested calling customer service directly as he could not do anything but sell the parts.

Today I spoke with their customer support and confirmed that purchasing an entire firebox is the only option I have. I also confirmed that there had been no design or material improvements to suggest that the replacement box would last any longer than the original. The customer service rep did seem concerned whether I was using the grill at a temperature too high, suggesting that high temperatures may be at issue here. I responded that the maximum temperature capability of the grill would be determined by the orifice diameter that Char-Broil provided in the natural gas conversion kit and that I could find nothing in the literature provided with the grill that even hinted that using the grill on high would present a problem of any sort. Since the grill is an infrared model, much is made of the benefits of searing the meat. Further, the four temperature gauges on the front of the grill stopped working the first year I owned it.

One of our Grilling Experts can be reached Monday through Friday 8am to 6pm EST and Saturdays from 10am-3pm EST.

Unfortunately, I do not show we have a substitute material for your unit. Due to the elements that the grill are exposed to, the handle has the ability to become hot. We will be happy to discuss the issue with you though, if you would like.

We look forward to assisting you.

Charbroil Grill bolts to the Lid bent in and gave way. The lid fell off on the left side as I was grilling and i tried to catch the lid so it wouldn’t completely fall off; as a result, the fire box and lid was damaged.

I called Charbroil and tried to explain what happened and they required me to pay shipping for the lid and its hardware, i was told by my boyfriend to call back because i didn’t explain that the part where the lid attaches was damaged and that will need to be replaced. Charbroil rep then stated, I would have to send pictures in order for them to send out the fire box and I would also have to pay shipping for that as well.

I explained to the representative, that the grill was purchased around the end of Feb beginning of March and this should not happen. I shouldn’t have to pay shipping for a product that has manufacturing issues or is defective.

My grill has a cover and is only a few months old. I had my granddaughter outside in the yard with me and this could have caused injury to myself as well as her , if the lid would have fell off completely and if i did not have good reflex’s.

The screws need to be recalled because this should just happen and I don’t want someone to get injured if it could be a quick fix of replacing the screw and bolts.

The gas regulator on my Char-Broil “Red Urban Infrared Grill” (Model # 463250210) failed. When I opened the valve on the propane tank, gas started leaking out very rapidly. I turned off the tank, disconnected the coupler, re-connected the coupler, and the same thing happened (I was checking to make sure that the coupler was connected properly). The grill was purchased in June of 2010. The original regulator (Char-Broil part number G352-3500-W1) was defective straight out of the box (same issue of gas leaking when the tank valve was opened). Char-Broil sent a replacement part, which has now failed less than 2 years later. The failure of this part allows propane to leak out very rapidly. If the grill was on when this happened, there would be a serious risk of fire or an explosion.

She says their was a clicking noise before it blew, which she says happened all three times. She contacted the manufacturer and that it is a seasonal product and that there is nothing they can do about it.

The product, in the report: Char-Broil COMMERCIAL SERIES URBAN GRILL,

I have a Char-Broil COMMERCIAL SERIES LP/PROPANE powered outdoor grill. I grilled beef (Hamburger) on the grill at 600º for approximately (24) twenty-four minutes. When I determined that the beef was cooked properly, I closed both of the knob type valves that are fixed on the front of the grill to the closed position, I opened the bottom storage door to close off the LP/PROPANE valve. Successfully closing off the the ignition source of fuel to the grill and burners, I pulled the beef off of the grate and closed the Stainless looking lid to the closed position and at that point visually the fire was completely extinguished from a visual perspective as well as I could tell. I walked away from the grill appliance, went inside for approximately (2-3) two or three minutes when I looked outside and the grill appliance was blowing off a mix of dark gray smoke pouring out of the entire upper end of the fire-box with the lid still closed. I checked the valves a second time making sure that all fuel sources had been completely closed off and they are closed. At this point the grill is on fire. My next step was to contain the fire as effectively as possible, as I noticed that the thin perforated grate and the upper grill insert that sits inside of the thin perforated grate had caught on fire, I also noticed that the fire was burning below the thin perforated grate as well as burning on the top of the cooking surface. I successfully extinguished the fire with wet kitchen towels, I used up (4) four towels to put the fire out. The next day I uncovered the grill to take a look inside. What I found was that the run-off (fat) from the beef as it cooked had built up and baked itself to the thin perforated grate and the insert. It appears visually like charcoal build up on the cooking surface of this type of grill cooking surface. The cleaning history on this appliance is it gets the thin perforated grates and inserts pulled out every third time I cook on the grill. In total there are (4) pieces that get cleaned on the cooking surface. This type of cooking surface gets a visual build up on the grate after (2-3) two or three uses. I have used this appliance for about (13) months now and this is the first time that the entire firebox and grate had caught on fire after closing off all the fuel sources. I also notice that on the top of the grate/cooking surface the the words PATENT PENDING are visible. The good news is that that fire is out and we did not need the Snorkle truck. It was an incident that had serious potential to cause injuries and damages.

The product, in the report: Gas grill

The decals that indicates the different cooking tempeatures and the warning for hot surfaces just peels off because the panel is right on the heating area. After just 5 uses I can’t tell any settings. The decals are a thin plastic layer that simply fall of in pieces. This are the indicators for all knobs and the warning for hot surfaces.
