The reports, as CPSC published them
Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.
Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: You are already aware of this product -- and DOJ prosecuted the manufacturer, Gree. It was an average sized grey dehumidifier with pump. Hard to say what size, since most of it melted. Unfortunately all specific identifiers are melted.
Fire caused by spontaneous combustion of a dehumidifier made by Gree. I have been informed that our fire unfortunately happen too late, since the DOJ’s program to compensate victims of Gree’s negligence closed 8 months before our fire. Even still, the DOJ recommended that we report our fire to CPSC.

No one hurt Made Aug 31, 2023, sent to the company Sep 12, 2023, published by CPSC Sep 26, 2023
The product, in the report: HMT-70E-A dehumidifier by Soleus
We moved our dehumidifier up five individual stairs with it an upright position and plugged it in to use it. Ice formed in the back of the unit and it started to get hot. It also was forming moisture in the outside of the unit itself, with water running down the top back edge of the sides of the unit near the cord, creating an electrical fire risk. We unplugged it. Waited 24 hours and plugged in and watched and monitored but it happened again, so we stopped using it. This is a recurring problem with almost every dehumidifier we have purchased. Most were recalled.

The product, in the report: SoleusAir by Gree, Model GL-DEH-70P-2s2, S/N 10017090108, Date Code 0212; purchased at Lowe’s on 6/6/12 for $289.00.
The dehumidifier was being used in the basement to take moisture out of the air. The basement is completely finished and has baby grand in room so humidity needs to be in check. The dehumidifier quit removing moisture and found that it had been recalled due to fire hazard. The back of the unit was very hot to the touch when I shut it off and ceased use. Would like full refund of $289.00 be sent to me being this unit was recalled and I was very fortunate that I averted a house fire.

On April 7, 2019, a fire broke out in my basement. I usually have my dehumidifier plugged in and running to keep the basement humidity down. There was lots of smoke damage throughout the building. One of the tenants was home and she called the fire department.

The product, in the report: Soleus Air 70-pint dehumidifier, “powered by Gree,” model # GL-DEH-70EIP-6 (L3), date code 1212, black, with pump.
I have a SoleusAir dehumidifier, model # GL-DEH-70EIP-6, date code 1212, which I bought from Home Depot in 2013. The pump option no longer works and I run the unit with the pump turned off, but twice I have caught the pump running continuously even when the control panel shows it as off, and even turning the entire dehumidifier off does not cause the pump to stop running. I have to unplug the unit, and when I do, the prongs of the plug are extremely hot, too hot to touch.
Before I happened to see what was going on, I noticed many times that the outlet strip it was plugged into had had its internal breaker tripped. Now I know why. This is a fire hazard.

The product, in the report: dehumidifier
I had not used the dehumidifier for awhile (6mo or so). I was in the basement, noted that it smelled musty and turned on the unit about 2pm. At 4pm the smoke detectors in the house went off. I went downstairs and saw flames shooting about a foot or so out of the dehumidifier. 911 was called. I grabbed a bucket and filled with some water to pour over flames. I repeated this 3 times. Then unplugged the unit. FD came to assess situation and ventilate basement. Fumes were quite bad. We were informed from FD that we may need to have our furniture and carpet cleaned by a restoration company to get smell out. Prior to this incident, the unit frequently tripped our gfi (at least we attributed it to the dehumidifier)

The product, in the report: SOLEUSAIR Dehumidifier
I own a SoleusAir dehumidifier and had it located in the basement. I went into basement back in September of 2017 and heard a loud noise coming from the unit. When I checked the unit, I found the motor area to be VERY hot to the touch and the unit was blowing very hot air. I unplugged the unit and figured the motor had seized. I started to do research on line and found the recall information. My unit was affected by the recall. I was very lucky to have heard the noisy unit when I went into the basement. My wife is in the basement daily for a workout and did not know the difference in sound.
I contacted Gree and completed the recall information. I received the recall package weeks later and promptly sent it in with all required information. It was explained to me at that time that I would receive my refund within 2-6 weeks. It is now January 12, 2018 and I have not received my refund as of yet. I just spoke to Gree and was told they did not receive the return package from me until October 16, 2017 and did not start to process the refund until December 1, 2017. Are you kidding me??? That is ridiculous. They stated they will get the refund to me as soon as possible.
If a company is involved with a recall such as this, they should be a little more attentive and ambitious to satisfy ALL customers in a timely fashion. This is NOT timely. Furthermore, they won’t even refund the purchase price that I have on my receipt. They will only refund $229. Why?????

The product, in the report: Soleus Air dehumidifier Model # GL-DEH-70EIP-6, portable dehumidifier with Internal Pump
Running the Soleus Air dehumidifier Model # GL-DEH-70EIP-6 in my basement to lower the humidity level. When opening the basement door, I smelled a strong “hot plastic” odor. Tracking down the area where the odor was the most prevalent, led me to the dehumidifier. No real warmth on the outside of the housing. Turned the device off and removed the bucket from the unit. I could see that plastic behind the bucket had begun to deform and melt.
Given, I bought the unit because of the internal pump, I don’t need to empty the bucket and visit the dehumidifier often. Mainly only to clean out the air filter section. I am glad this issue happened while I was home as I do feel continued operation of the dehumidifier was a fire threat.

We had a Soleus Air, Powered by Gree, dehumidifier in the basement of our home for five years with no issues. Then on January 22, 2017 the unit started smoking, and caught on fire! Luckily we were in the basement when this incident occurred. We were able to get the unit out of the house, and extinguish the flames with our garden hose. Thankfully no personal or property damage happened.

The caller indicates that he was dispatched for smoke in a condominium complex. When the caller arrived, there was a fire in the basement that was limited to a plugged-in dehumidifier situated in an unfinished common area. The caller states that there was a short-length garden hose attached to the dehumidifier so it was not emptied manually. Aside from the unit itself and parts of the ceiling charred, no other damage existed however heavy smoke existed throughout the entire structure. The caller indicates that the condenser and the coil were the only things left from the dehumidifier.
The caller was told by the consumer that the unit runs continuously and is set to an automated control however the consumer does not remember what percentage it was set to.

Using a SoleusAir powered by Gree Dehumidifier Model GM-DEH-45-1q3. Unit was in basement utility room. Turned on previous day and ran for approximately 24 hours. On Friday, May 27 2016 the unit overheated and was emitting smoke. We were home at the time and smelled smoke through the HVAC vents in home. Went downstairs to find the unit very hot to the touch, the breaker to the home wiring circuit was tripped. The unit was still emitting smoke. House circuit breaker prevented much worse from happening. Looked up the recall information online with Gree and they state that this serial number is NOT affected by the recall. We had a previous unit that we replaced when it was recalled and this was the replacement.

My SoleusAir dehumidifier, model GL-DEH-70F-2, date code 0513, was found to be making a strange noise, running but not removing any water from the air, and dangerously hot to the touch. Had there been any flammables in contact with the unit, there would have been a fire. I unplugged the unit immediately and discontinued use. It was purchased from Lowes on 8/17/2013. The incident occurred sometime in January 2016. The label says the unit was manufactured by Gree, which has an outstanding recall for dehumidifiers which overheat. Gree says this particular model is not subject to the recall.

The product, in the report: 30 pint Soleus Air Dehumidifier
Smelled a burning or hot smell in my house. Went down in my basement and found my dehumidifier scorching hot. The compressor part of the unit was running continuously but the fan part of the unit was not running causing it to get extremely hot. I tried to push the power button to shut the unit off, but it would not shut off. Had to unplug it from the outlet to get it to shut off. This seemed like a very dangerous situation so I decided to contact the manufacturer. Went to their website and found out the unit was recalled because it causes fires. Typed my units information and my complete contact information in to their form and it verified that the unit was recalled and that they would contact me. This was three weeks ago and I have not heard anything. This company needs a big fine! They obviously build defective products and do not take their recall obligations seriously. I expected that I would hear from them in a matter of a few days. Had they included a product registration form with the product, they could have contacted people about this issue. I checked some of their new dehumidifiers and they do not include product registration forms with them either. They should not be allowed to sell a product of this nature without keeping track of consumer contact information.

The product, in the report: SoleusAir powered by GREE, dehumidifier
I have a SoleusAir Dehumidifier, powered by GREE, model #GL-DEH-30-1, purchased about May 2006. Late last summer and again now when I attempt to turn it on, it trips the circuit breaker to which the plug is attached. I tried cleaning the filter, and also ensured the hose drain was not plugged. Then in searching for how to repair, I came across the CPSC recall notice for these dehumidifiers. Fortunately, the circuit breaker tripping prevented any damage or injury because the unit just wouldn’t run. Obviously, it must have been drawing significant current for this to happen, which could I suppose eventually have led to an electrical fire.

This dehumidifier was being utilized in our basement to keep it dry. The basement is finished and in use on a regular basis. The filter is cleaned every month to ensure proper air flow. At approximately 2230 on the date below we heard a load bang come from the appliance and it began to smoke. We unplugged the appliance and by this time black smoke was rolling out of it. Very soon, flames began emerging from the top of the unit and quickly became larger. We grabbed a bucket, filled it with water and through it on the appliance. At this point we estimate the flames were 2-3 feet high. Once the flames were out we carried it outside and used a hose to apply additional water. No property damage was done except for a few ceiling tiles and the thought of our house burning down!

I was running the Soleus Air dehumidifier Model # GL-DEH-70EIP-6 in my basement to lower the humidity level. About 6 months ago the pump stopped working, so I went down today to see if the water needed to be emptied from the unit, and something smelled “hot”. This unit was being used to dehumidify my basement. I have been using this unit for approximately 1.5 years without issues with it constantly running 24/7. Just today when I went downstairs into the basement, I had smelled an electrical burning smell. After investigation, I determined that the smell was coming from the dehumidifier, so I turned it OFF and unplugged the unit. The top portion and the sides of the unit were very hot to the touch (not warm). The smell was being emitted from the blower section. Even after it had been turned OFF for 6 hours, the smell persists. As a test, I reconnected the dehumidifier temporarily and it operated fine but the unit was emitting the electrical burning smell. The unit is now disconnected and will be contacting the manufacturer for next steps. This phenomenon does not seem normal at all.

SoleusAIR Dehumidfier purchased 6/2/13 for use in basement was programmed to run when humidity was high on a 4 hr cycle. Unit caught fire while running. Did not through the breaker. We had been experiencing heavy rains through the month so both sump pumps were working hard. Heard something pop but didn’t give it much thought with those pumps going off. Within 15-20 minutes all smoke detectors in my house were going off. There was no visible smoke at this time but something clearly set off both the upstairs and downstairs. Because of that sound quickly checked downstairs and discovered the dehumidifier on fire. Fortunately it was contained to the unit only and I was able to put out with a fire extinguisher. I was to have left the house within 15 20 minutes, I cannot imagine what could have happened had I not been home.

Last evening, our SoleusAir SG-DEH-45-1 dehumidifier (S/N 5466000914) caught fire. Lots of flames and black smoke billowed from the unit. We were home at the time and after being alerted to the fire by our smoke detectors, rolled the dehumidifier out a basement door and brought it outside. We threw two small buckets of water on it to end the excitement. There was no resulting fire damage, however, our basement will stink for a while due to the fumes produced by the burning unit.

The product, in the report: Dehumidifier
The consumer indicates that although his unit sounds like it is working properly, for the past two weeks it has not been removing moisture from his home. The unit runs twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
06/16/2015 - Curious as to why his unit was not working properly, the consumer proceeded to check his unit. At first, he had to wait for it to cool down as he noticed how hot it was to touch. When he opened the unit, he noticed several components inside it that were either losing their form from excessive heat; the compressor was so hot that the housing was melting because it was touching the compressor. The water pump was also affected.
The consumer indicates that he never noticed any smoke surrounding the unit. He informs that the fan was working properly.
The consumer contacted the manufacturer and explained to a representative the issues he has been having with his unit. Upon looking up his specific model, he was informed that his dehumidifier is not included in a recall. Because his unit is not recalled, he was not offered a remedy but was informed that he should unplug and stop usage of his unit, as well as that he will be receiving a call from the manufacturer the following week.
The consumer has no injuries nor previous incidents to report. The consumer believes this product poses a safety hazard.

The product, in the report: dehumidifier, Soleus air 45 pint
Early on a Sunday morning we were awakened by the overwhelming odor of something burning.
After searching the house we found the Soleus air dehumidifier powered by Gree model # SG-DEH-45-1 belching smoke. We immediately pulled the plug. Had we not been home, I am not sure what would have happened.
The unit in the basement was not operating but it was still smoking. We shut the breaker on the electrical panel off and pulled the plug on the unit, when we finally located the source of the smokey odor.
We searched online and learned that the product had been recalled. We were unaware of the recall until the unit smoked.

The product, in the report: Soleus Air Dehumidifier Model: GL-DEH-70F-2 L3 S/N: [REDACTED] UPC Code: 847654002123 Made in China Date Code: 0513 Pictures are available, but I can not upload them to the sight. The pop up window for the Add Photos / Documents does not contain any options to select.
A Soleus Air dehumidifier overheated causing the plastic bottom of the unit to deform and discolor the carpet in my basement (I will try to attach pictures). I was very lucky that I went to check the water collection bucket or the dehumidifier could have caused a fire. On 14 May 2015 I called Soleus Air to report the issue, but I was instructed to call the Gree Recall Center. On the same day I notified the recall center of my issue, but they could only take a report and issue a reference number ([REDACTED) due to fact that my unit is not on the recall list. The following is the information for my dehumidifier:
Soleus Air Model: GL-DEH-70F-2 L3 S/N: [REDACTED] Made in China Date Code: 0513
The recall center told me Soleus Air would contact me. After not hearing from Soleus Air, I contacted them on 20 May 2015. I was informed that Soleus Air knew nothing of the reference number, and that I should be hearing from the recall center. The only other option they said I had was to contact the Consumer Protection Safety Commission. On the same day, the recall center told me to wait a week or so for the reference number to be processed through their system. I contacted the recall center again on 1 June 2015, and was told to contact Soleus Air since the unit is not part of the recall.
It’s pretty clear to me now that no one wants to take responsibility for an overheating dehumidifier that is not on the recall list. The unit is unsafe and should be added to the recall list as dangerous fire hazard.

I plugged in our SoleusAir Model GM-DEH-45-1 (purchased at Menards on 6/8/12) for the first time since we stopped running it in fall. The fan and humidistat ran, but I realized there was no water being removed from the air. When I went down later to check on it, it smelled like something had burned and I later realized the unit was warm. When I went online this morning to check whether others had had problems with this dehumidifier I learned of the recall.

The product, in the report: Gree SoleusAir 70 pint dehumidifier
I have a Gree SoleusAir 70 pint dehumidifier. The unit has been in use in my basement. It overheated and filled my basement with smoke and electrical “hot” smell. I identified that it was coming from the dehumidifier and unplugged the unit before there was any significant damage to my home.
I checked and there is a recall, but my specific number is not on the list. I phoned the company and they were unable to assist me because it was not included at this time.
I believe that it should be included given the large number of problems with the units manufactured during the same time as mine.
I am looking for help to get it added. I was very lucky that I was home at the time of the incident or I may not have been so lucky. I also have a 4 year old in my home and can not allow myself to think of how terrible it could have been if there had been a fire.
Thank you for your help.

The product, in the report: A SoleusAir 30 pint dehumidifier, Serial No 6500000926, Model SG-DEH-30M-1A
We purchased at Menards in Cedar Rapids, IA a SoleusAir by Gree Dehumidifier on April 14, 2011, Model SG-DEH-30m-1A, Serial No. 65100000926, MD000021511000. A few days ago, I noticed no water running out of the hose. Checked the case and it was extremely hot. The compressor was overheating. We unplugged it. Fortunately, we caught it before it caught on fire. Since this was recalled, shouldn’t we get a refund on it? We received no recall notice on this. A friend informed me of this web site as he also had trouble with his dehumidifier, thus I found out that our unit is under the recall notice. Is there any way of getting a refund on this? Since we now need to get another dehumidifier, how do we determine what kind and brand to purchase. Is there any dehumidifier that is safe to have? I understand that most of the parts are manufactured in China. Is this correct?

The product, in the report: Dehumidifier
My husband and I purchased a Dehumidifier from Lowe’s on 3/19/2012 for $259.00 + Sales Tax. The dehumidifier was a Soleus SG-DEH-70-2 / MD000121511000. The unit ran for some time and then, while we were home, we smelled the unit burning. We unplugged it and afterward, tried a few times to see if it would run. It never did run again. Due to problems locating a proper recycling/disposal facility, the unit stayed around our house.
Looking back on the incident, we should have notified you right away as it may have helped other people.
It was fortuitous that the unit never ran again and yet stayed around our house, as the recall was issued and we had to return the applicable parts for a refund. We have just received our refund check for $202.50. Although we are pleased to be refunded at least part of our costs, we are wondering why we were unable to submit our receipt and receive a refund of the purchase price.
There were a number of fortunate occurrences for our issue - our house, rescued animals, and 89 year old mother were harmed as a result of the dehumidifier’s problems, we were home at the time of the problem, the unit stayed around due to our inability to find a proper facility, and we were able to receive almost 80% of our purchase price back.
We realize recalls are tough and thank you for your work on this issue. If there is an option to submit our receipt, we will happily do so.
Thank you!

The product, in the report: SoleusAir dehumidifier Model SG-DEH-45-1 Serial # 54040000835 Date code 000032510000
Our SoleusAir dehumidifier (model SG-DEH-45-1) (SN 54040000835) (MFG date MD000032510000) was tripping the circuit breaker in our electrical panel. When I took the water catching structure off the unit, I could see discoloration caused by overheating, and the same area that was discolored was also disfigured due to the heat melting the area.
