The product, in the report: 30-inch gas range in stainless steel
On several occasions, our gas range (KitchenAid Superba Model# KGRT607HBS9) turned the oven on or turned itself off without user input. Many times, once the oven was on, the electronic controls were frozen such that pressing the ‘Cancel/Off’ button did nothing. The oven would not respond. For the last 6 months, we have engaged the ‘control lock’ feature to prevent further incidents but have been largely unable to use our oven.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid convection gas range/oven, stainless steel, model KSGB900ESS, purchased 9/13/2015, but not installed until 12/29/2015 due to kitchen remodel
On 6/24/17 my KitchenAid gas oven range model KSGB900ESS (purchased September 2015 and installed 12/29/2015 during a kitchen remodel) caught on fire while cooking in the oven at 500 degrees. The fire was electrical in nature (according to the fire department), and was caused by a malfunction in the wiring in the back of the unit (between the back interior oven wall and exterior wall -- there is a space there, and vents are on the top of this area). First smoke filled the upstairs, then started roiling up through the vents. Within a couple of minutes, flames shot out of the vents. I attempted to put baking soda on the flames to extinguish them but this did not work. The fire department was called and they determined it was electrical, within the unit itself. There is no apparent damage to the wall outlet into which the oven was plugged. Damage is minimal due to quick response on my part and the fire department. Insurance claim (Travelers Insurance) covers only the cleaning and repairs to kitchen itself (minimal), but does not cover the oven/range because it was a mechanical failure. An 18-month old oven should not be failing electrically, especially not at temperatures at which it is designed to operate.
Also, the knobs that turn on the burners are located vertically on the front face (i.e., they stick out from the oven). In the 18 months we have had this unit, they have accidentally been bumped and TURNED ON -- with gas leaking into the kitchen -- as it only requires MAYBE 1-lb. of pressure to push in and turn the knob. This is clearly a safety hazard, as any small child or pet could turn this gas on and create a potential hazard.
I believe this model has serious design and safety flaws which should be investigated.

The product, in the report: KGCC506RBL KitchenAid 30” Gas Cooktop 4 Burner Frameless Ceramic Glass - Black
Our Kitchen Aid stovetop blew up shattering the glass of the exhaust hood and sending shards of glass and ceramic 25 feet down the hall and into other rooms. How my daughter, who had simply tried to turn on a gas burner was not shredded is a miracle. She suffered a small cut but emotionally was truly shaken.

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid 30” gas range. http://www.kitchenaid.com/shop/major-appliances-1/ranges-2/slide-in-3/-[KSGG700ESS]-408407/KSGG700ESS/
The unsafe product is a Kitchen-Aid 30” Gas Range (http://www.kitchenaid.com/shop/major-appliances-1/ranges-2/slide-in-3/-[KSGG700ESS]-408407/KSGG700ESS/). On several occasions (10 or more), myself or a family member has brushed against the range (for normal purposes such as accessing the microwave oven above, reaching into a nearby cupboard, or simply working on the counter space near the appliance) and accidentally turned one of the knobs thereby turning on the gas. Only after eventually smelling gas do we realize that the gas is on. As mentioned above, this has happened on several occasions to the point that I believe it is not just a random mishap. If I remember correctly, on one occasion, I came home to the smell of gas believing that I or someone may have bumped the knob(s) before leaving for work, and not knowing how long the gas has been on, I was extremely scared for the safety of my family and pets. This just happened again promoting this report. I am going to search for safety covers but believe I have bought some in the past and they did not fit. Not sure what to do next.

Four times my wife accidentally turned on a burner on our stove top by leaning against one of the knobs while she cooked or reached up to the microwave. Three times we smelled the gas leaking much later. One time the burner lit. There is no way to lock the knobs, so we have to keep the knobs removed from the stove.

Our gas range top. If you accidentally turn gas on by rubbing a knob. It can bypass the ignition point and remain on unlit. Then a smell of gas and you go to turn it off. This is where it becomes a safety hazard. Depending on how long gas was emitting will determine the size of explosion you are about to experience. You cannot turn the gas off without passing the igniter point which sets off a spark and ignites the escaped gas.

The product, in the report: Product is the KitchenAid gas range with double oven.
The cooktop was being used with two gas burners on. One of the valves locked the burner in the “on” position. We have had the burner valves lock before on this range, three times, but on different burners, and always in the “off” position before. This time we had no choice except to turn off the gas to the unit. Of course, this involved moving both the refrigerator and the range away from the wall to reach the turnoff valve. It was a weekend night.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid gas oven KSGG700ESS - metal finish
The door panel and control panel get red hot, so much so that the technician did not even want to touch it. We also tried to cook an egg on the control panel, as you would a hot sidewalk, and indeed it fried. I have a video and pictures (which I was not able to upload to this site, though I would if someone from CPSC contacted me). This Kitchen Aid oven (KSGG700ESS) is a safety hazard for anyone having children or others as the exterior becomes so hot, it is untouchable.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid
This is regarding a Kitchenaid Range KFGG500ESS five burner gas range that was bought from www.homedepot.com on July 7th 2016. After the oven was turned on for thirty minutes or so, I have noticed the front stainless steel panel (housing the knobs) was extremely hot to the touch. I called Home Depot and they arranged for a replacement of the range in question. The new range arrived and it showed exactly the same signs. I called Home Depot again and this time, they sent out a tech to diagnose the problem. The tech arrived while the oven was heating up. I took the surface temperature of the front panel at 135 F. The tech told me that Kitchenaid has a spec where the bare metal can get upto 160 F and he left noting that the appliance was working per design. I kept the oven ON after his departure and the surface temperature of the front panel exceeded 160 F. At this point, I called Home Depot again and explained the concern. They rescheduled another visit with the Kitchenaid tech. When the second tech came in I had the oven at 500 F for about 40 minutes. The tech has a temperature probe (contact heat thermocouple). Using his device, we have recorded temperatures in excess of 285 F in the exposed surface between the front panel and the oven door. The stainless steel panel housing the knobs recorder a temperature in excess of 190 F using the same testing device. I explained to the tech that the surface temperatures of the exposed metal are a safety hazard to my two and four year old kids in the house. The service tech measured the temperatures of the inside of the oven and found them to be close to the set temperature. Based on that he concluded that the appliance is worked as designed. I expressed my concern about exposed metal surfaces on the front of the oven that are extremely hot to the touch. He said it is per design and failed to give me any documentation when I pressed him about how hot the surface can get before its deemed unsafe. Per design, there are vents between the front stainless steel panel (housing the knobs) and the oven door. These vents come into play when the oven is turned on. These vents are made out of black metal type material. These vents are very susceptible to the touch (just like the front panel housing the knobs). You can barely touch these surfaces for two seconds without suffering a serious burn. I have expressed this concern to the techs and Kitechanid hot line numerous times but they insist this is per design. I believe such poor design is a detriment to my family’s safety. I have pictures of the temperature readings in case you need them for reference.

The product, in the report: Gas range
In February 2016, I bought a KitchenAid gas range. I noticed since then that exterior surfaces became extremely hot after the oven had been on for a while. The heat on the horizontal surface just above the oven gets so hot, it could burn someone’s skin and I fear for the safety of my grandchildren when they visit. I contact the manufacturer, Whirlpool, which sent a technician to my home. The technician was knowledgeable, professional, and very familiar with this safety concern. The technician – THEIR TECHNICIAN informed us that the excessive heat is due to a design defect; that the product was configured with an updraft for the oven instead of a downdraft, a mistake in his opinion.

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid gas range Model KGRS505XSS01 and SN D10233389.
I purchased a gas range - Kitchen Aid Model KGRS505XSS01 and SN D10233389. Many times over the past few years, the knobs for the burners have turned on by accident after I reached in the cabinet above it and my abdomen brushed the knobs. I would just turn them off, no problem. Recently, however, I became aware that it a safety problem, because the knob turned on, but not far enough to make the electronic sparker click, so I was unaware it had turned. It was not until I smelled gas from the other room that I tried to find the source and noticed the knob was on. The room was full of gas by that time. I contacted Kitchen Aid to see if they had any retrofitting solution for this problem, and they told me they did not. I am writing you to report the safety hazard of this range in hopes that it can be corrected to prevent a disaster before it occurs.

The “Push” safety on each valve is TOO soft and permits even a brush up against the valve knob to turn on without the knowledge of anyone. This is an Extreme Safety issue. Had we not discovered this and left the knob in the partial open position, Gas would have accumulated in the house and caused an Explosion!

The product, in the report: KitchenAid cooktop-36inch, 5 burner, gas on glass
My wife was making pasta with our KitchenAid gas cooktop and it exploded. She was able to get the kids out of the house and to control the fire until the fire department arrived. They were able to turn the gasoff and stop the fire. Apparently, there have been a number of similar cases online involving these gas on glass cooktops from KitchenAid and other Whirlpool brands.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid 36” 5 burner glass cooktop
Kitchenaid 36” Cooktop Explosion File # [REDACTED]
On Sept. 16, 2015, I turned on the front left burner of this cooktop under a 5” tall pot containing oatmeal and water. There was a large flame up to the top of the pot and completely around it. It scared me and I turned off the flame immediately. Then the entire cooktop exploded shooting glass up in the air and across the room. The iron grates were blown up against the stone backsplash. I was completely stunned. I had minor cuts on my arm and glass fragments in my hair. I must have turned away from the cooktop just in time to be out of the main thrust of the explosion. Pieces of glass flew over the kitchen island into the great room beyond for an approximate distance of about 15 feet. At no time did I notice any smell of gas although I don’t know what propane gas smells like if different from the smell of natural gas. This is a dangerous appliance that needs to be removed from the marketplace.
I grabbed my phone, went outside and called Valley Propane who instructed me on how to turn off the main valve on the outside propane tank which I did. They arrived about a half hour later and disconnected the cooktop and capped off the gas line to the cooktop. One of their men removed the remaining small glass fragments from my scalp and hair that I was unable to do myself. I put alcohol on all the cuts and bandages on the 2 cuts that were bleeding. None required additional medical attention as there was no nearby facility to go to anyway. They also helped me calm down from the shock.
I took pictures of the explosion which I previously emailed to you and am enclosing additional copies herein. It took me a day and a half of my vacation to clean up the mess. There are now minor dents in the island cabinets facing the cooktop, the tall cabinets on either side and in the prefinished white oak flooring between the cooktop and the kitchen island. I repaired the dents as best as possible with refinishing gel.

Caller stated that all the gas knobs on his range is sensitive, they do not ignite immediately when it is powered on, and if brushed against accidentally the gas escapes. This incident started since he purchased it.
The manufacturer was not contacted as yet. He stated that he noticed that other brands had the same complaints online and they maybe made by the same manufacturer.
Caller feels that these gas ranges with these knobs are extremely dangerous and should be recalled.

The product, in the report: 30” KitchenAir Superba gas range with electric starter, convection oven. Stainless steel with black electronic control panel. MODEL: KGRT607HBS3 SERIAL NO. IMK0387251
Gas oven would not turn off. This has happened before where we try to press CANCEL, even pressing START first and then CANCEL, but it would not beep or register at all and if someone else tried it would work. In other words, it worked most of the time, but failed intermittently. This time I put the oven at 425 and it beeped when I went to shut it off, but it *DID NOT go off. We could hear it, and the oven and the control pad were very hot. We kept pushing CANCEL and it would beep but not shut off. Finally, it went off on its own about 15 minutes later as I was frantically calling the gas company. I’ve Googled this, and it’s happened to other people. KitchenAid said they’d charge $100 to just diagnose it. But they changed the design on the later models. Their control panel now has buttons that are rubberized bubbles....and they’re still having the problem. Reportedly, if one wire in there fails they all can fail. There has been no recall and they gave me a hard time with insisting on my reading the model number and serial number, which were tiny and very hard to read for someone in a wheel chair. The receptionist said she didn’t think I read her a valid serial number. (The first numeral, or letter was either a 1 or an l or an I.) (one, el, or eye)

The product, in the report: Gas range, Kitchen Aid
Please see the attached letter to which I have never received a response. The stove has been sitting there for more than a year now without the back panel. (See attached photographs). I heard the promotion for the special on CBS news report, “Shattering Glass/’ but was out of town and did not have an opportunity to timely view it. I thought it was important to let you know that this is not a new story about “shattering glass” and that Whirlpool has consistently denied over time, that it is even possible for the glass to shatter without any kind of impact to it. I would appreciate any assistance in dealing with Whirlpool. ... Some years ago, I purchased a Kitchen Aid gas range. Shortly after, while using the back burners on the range, the gals panel shattered. The company took the position that the problem should be resolved by replacing the glass back panel. I was concerned that I or someone else using the stove might get hurt, and asked if there was an alternative to the glass panel. I was told that there was, and that there had never been an issue of glass shattering, unexpectedly, without impact to it, with the range.
Reluctantly, but having no choice, I had another glass panel sent to me in the mail. Later, an authorized repair person was sent to put in the panel. In conversation, with the repairman, he told me that the company was lying because it was his experience, that the glass panels shattered all the time and that it was a design defect to place the panel so close to the back burners. He said that the only way to ensure that the back panel would not shatter was not to use the two back burners or to be certain they were always used on low. As at that point my family often needed all the burners to be used at once, I wrote a letter to your corporate office explaining that I did not purchase a two burner stove and needed the stove to be replaced. I received a letter from your company which emphasized that the glass would not shatter and even if it did, it was tempered glass and therefore would pose no problem. And of course, the letter also stated that no one else in recorded history had a problem with the panel.
In December 2013, while standing over the stove cooking breakfast on the front burners, as I have feared all these years, the glass back panel spontaneously and inexplicably shattered and went flying all over the stove, the kitchen counters, the floor and hit me in my face. I called Whirlpool and spoke to our Customer Care Department. The persons I spoke to kept repeating that Whirlpool would send me a new glass panel. I explained the history of the situation and emphatically refused to have the issue resolved by sending me another glass panel. ... I have a mark on my face from the bruise where the glass hit me, could not use the stove for days, had to clean up the glass from all over the kitchen and stove and have spent hours on the phone talking to your staff...a staff that is stuck on giving me another panel to redress Whirlpool’s malfeasance. ...

The product, in the report: KitchenAid/ Whirlpool Co, Benton Harbor MI, Model# KGSS907SWH02, Architect Series II, 30” Gas Slide In Range, Self-Cleaning, Warming Drawer, White
After finishing cooking for the evening and tidying up the kitchen I heard the igniters on our 31/2 year old KitchenAid Architect Series II , KGSS907SWH02, 30” Slide In Gas Range spontaneously start. The gas knobs were all in the off position. Within about 40 seconds of the igniters continually firing we could not believe it when we heard the igniter in the oven turn on. Not only did it turn on, but it also turned on the gas in the oven and the broiler flame started. We could not believe our eyes. The broiler flame was very strong and had there been anything left in the oven even on the medium rack it would have caught on fire. This was at about 10pm. Scared for the safety of our family we evacuated our two kids and two pets from the house, had the fire extinguisher on hand and ready as we had no idea what this gas range was spontaneously doing. My husband then ran downstairs to cut the electricity from the electric panel. The sparking stopped and the flame disappeared. As we did not know what issues were causing the gas to spontaneously start we were concerned that there could also be a gas leak overnight. With limited options available at that time of night my husband pulled out the stove and manually turned the gas supply valve off behind the stove and we left the breaker turned off at the electric panel. We brought our kids back in the house and set up the carbon monoxide detector closer to the stove...just in case. This was a terrifying issue affecting the safety of our family and our property. I can’t even imagine if we were not at home at the time to catch this spontaneous fire in the oven. and the igniters spontaneously sparking on the stove top.
Upon contacting Whirlpool we were advised that an Authorized Whirlpool Repairman was not available for over 14 days as it was the Christmas break and they did not have anyone available during this time. As this was not acceptable service, given the safety issue, and the absolute inconvenience at a very busy entertaining time of the year, and the fact that we still had to feed our family of five over the holidays I advised them I would contact a local repair person to come. The local appliance repair company arrived Christmas Eve day and spent a good part of the day trying to determine the issue. After completely removing the ‘appliance manager’ component the issue continued. When we turned the power back on, with all the stove and oven controls off, the igniters would randomly start to spark and within a minute the igniter in the oven would spontaneously start and the gas in the broiler element would ignite. ( The repairman had also reopened the gas valve in the back of the stove.) The repairman was able to pick up a Whirlpool Corporation Factory Certified Electronic Spark Module ( #8273977). Upon replacing this module the problem appeared to be fixed.
It is now just two months later and last night the igniter on the front left burner randomly turned itself on again and started sparking. The stove and all the burners were turned off. Again, concerned for our safety we immediately went to cut the electrical power to the unit and the igniter stopped. While the gas in the oven did not turn itself on while we observed ( and took video) for about a minute and a half we decided not to wait any longer before cutting the electric power as we started to smell burning electric parts.
Upon reporting this last night to KitchenAid we have to wait 4 days ( this is the earliest appointment available by their service department) for an authorized repairman to come to the house to see the problem.
This range is a huge safety issue and should be recalled by the company before it results in a personal or property damage as a result of a fire or carbon monoxide poisoning.

The product, in the report: 5 Burners Stove
02/01/2015 - The consumer was back in his home for a few days from vacation. During this time, he indicates that he never used his unit. Because an incident occurred, the consumer assumes that he must have bumped into the unit’s knob and accidentally turned it on. The consumer does not remember ever bumping into the stove but he assumes he must have since nobody else was there. The consumer left his home.
02/13/2015 - The consumer’s daughter went to visit her father’s home and upon opening the back door of the house, he indicates that his daughter informed him that the entire house was filled with gas. She proceeded to close the door. The daughter contacted the consumer and the consumer gave her directions to turn off the propane tank on the outside of the house. The daughter turned off the tank and waited thirty minutes before she opened the house doors and windows in order to it let air out.
When the daughter went into the kitchen, she noticed the left burner knob of the stove was in the LOW position. The consumer informed his daughter that the gas smell must have came from the stove. Approximately an hour later, the consumer gave his daughter instructions to turn the furnace on as the weather was very cold. Because of the incident and the lingering smell of gas, the consumer’s daughter and her family did not feel safe staying in the house so they left.
02/16/2015 - The consumer contacted the retailer, the manufacturer and his gas company in order to inform them of the incident. When he spoke to a manufacturer Customer Representative, his incident was recorded under Reference No.: 771 223 2970.
The consumer is very concerned because of the possible disaster that could have happened due to the stove’s knob accidentally being turned on with the slightest of touch.
07/15/2014 (Approximately) - The consumer was in his kitchen and all of a sudden he heard a hissing sound. Looking around, he noticed that it was coming from the same left burner knob. When he contacted the retailer, the store owner put him on hold to try a small experiment. When the store owner, [REDACTED], came back to the phone, he informed the consumer that he was appalled at how easy it was to bump into the stove and inadvertently turn the stove on. [REDACTED]offered to send one of his Service Technicians to inspect his unit but the consumer denied the offer.
The consumer believes this product poses a safety hazard. The consumer has no injuries to report.

The product, in the report: KGRS303BSS 30” GSC CONVECTION RANGE KITCHENAID PURCHASED 10/26/2014
Using a KitchenAid Range in my kitchen I preheated it to toast some almonds for a recipe I was preparing. While it was pre heating I noted black smoke coming out of the from vents of the stove. I looked through the glass to see flames coming up from the bottom of the floor of the stove. I pushed the off button expecting the flames to go out but they continued. I ran over to my sink & grabbed a large glass & filled it with water and through it on the flames. After a few seconds they went out. This a new range I’ve only owned it since Oct. 26, 2014. I have already had the repair company here twice. First time because it was not lighting & we were smelling gas escaping, & because it did not heat up to set temperature. The second time was so they could replace igniter & burner, which was done on Jan. 27, 2015 just 2 days before fire. my concern here is this range has many cooking features like delay start & cook. If I had been using this feature I probably would not have been in the room & not noticed the fire immediately. I may have had some very serious damage to my kitchen maybe even my home.

The burner Control knobs and front surfaces of the range become overly hot when the oven is being used. If I do not use a pot holder to turn them my fingers would get burned. Also, the control knobs are too easily turned on by just a mistaken push and not realized until I smell gas, sometimes not for a few minutes. This range is not safe for us to have our grandchildren in the kitchen when we are cooking. A service tech was here today (12-10-2014) and found surface temperatures at over 140 degrees when the oven was running at 425, hot enough to burn his skin. Whirlpool feels that the range is operating within their specifications and will do nothing.

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aide stove stainless steel has double oven push button top small oven above large oven bottom all one range, 5 burners two each side and one long burner in middle, the knobs in front for burners on range,
I have a kitchen Aide stove purchased 3 yrs ago from Sears, these past 3 weeks my husband mentioned smelling gas having checked the knobs on range all where in off position, Soon after I smelled hint of gas one day I notice one knob was extremely hard to turn, on Saturday I began to make breakfast then I notice another knob was just as Hard to turn, when I got closer to look I could smell gas (note all knobs in off position,) Im not one to get headaches but noticing now when I was in kitchen seem to be when my headache would occur, I put a lighter to see if gas was on sure enough there was a small flame on two of burners, There was no way to turn knobs in any directions I called sears I called kitchen aide company, called my local gas. and electric company not knowing where this leak was coming from the only company to come out same day was gas electric after being checked no leak on my gas electric company but my stove was tagged danger out of serve due to DEFECTIVE KNOBS tech said never seen that happen but I’d need to have a repair person come out. I couldn’t get anyone out until 6 days later was the first opening July 31, meanwhile my gas is off stove tagged danger, Sears service guy came out, first thing he said all the knobs unable to turn not just the two I had notice, service guy turned gas on noticing the two leaks at burners which was why gas company turned gas switch off, after his puzzled look and statement that he hadn’t come across this before, I told him I felt this is a dangerous situation not being able to turn knobs on or off to close gas, he shook his head in agreement, There was no fixing the stove on this day, other than to turn gas off again replace and order five new parts (gas valve) defective knobs cost of 591.45 which may take 10 days to arrive, I have expressed my concern that this is was safety issue all along, which he agreed he didn’t want me to quote his statement I can understand his not wanting any issues with his job, but the subject of contacting Kitchen Aide was mentioned for reimbursement as he mention concession ( believing this was faulty safety issue) at least for some cost of the parts which were costly, I have called several times to contact kitchen Aide spoke once to representative since July 31 all the calls go to answer machine, Here is the information if I can help anyone else avoid the headache of a safety defect.

On 9/16/2013, while using the range top, the right rear burner became locked in the “on” position. The burner knob would not turn to allow the burner to be shut off. Very scary! I called KitchenAid customer service and was routed to the safety department. I was told to disable the appliance by shutting down the circuit breaker, unplugging the appliance, and shutting off the gas. Service was dispatched on 9/18/2013 to repair the burner valve. The repairman, [REDACTED] from A & E Factory Service, told me that the valves break all the time. I can bear witness to that. In July 2012, the center burn was locked in the “off” position. The burner knob would not turn to allow the burner to be turned on. A picture of the broken valve from the 9/16/2013 incident is attached for your reference.

KitchenAid double oven gas range, model KGRS505X
Installed 6-5-13, front burner control knobs will turn on if inadvertently leaned on/brushed. Gas flows, but no clicking sound to alert that this is happening. Leaning over the stovetop to clean or access digital controls causes this easily. Three times, have entered the kitchen to the smell of gas.
Contacted KitchenAid, they offer to sell add-on bushings to make the controls stiffer, less prone to accidental turning. But really, this is the way the range should be made to start with. Potential fire hazard as it is now.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Gas cooktop with electric starter Model # KGCC506RWW04
Kitchen Aid Model KGCC506 RWW04 is a fire hazard.
I spoke with Kitchen Aid’s Safety department to report that flames shot up out of a knob hole because water went into the hole and activated the electric starter without the knob being turned on. Their response was:
- no recall or fix will occur other than to repair my cooktop - no changes will be made to the design of the cook top - users must change their behaviors in order to prevent the problem
I am quite concerned that this hazard exists in my home and many other homes around the country. It is very unrealistic to expect that a pot will not boil over or that people will not drip water on the cooktop to clean it.
The safety supervisor even reported she had seen the problem in her home 3 years ago and suggested a fix to the design team yet she was told it could not be done and did not feel comfortable escalating the problem further. She even had to pay for the repair herself! It is very disconcerting to hear that Whirlpool/KitchenAid has such a poor work environment that the safety supervisor has to be concerned about her job just for reporting and attempting to resolve a legitimate safety issue.
Murphy’s Law dictates that this problem will continue to occur. You cannot depend on users’ behaviors to change. Pots boil over, beverages spill, people use water to clean stoves, water leaks occur in homes, kids play around with squirt guns, etc., etc. Whirpool is guilty of knowingly allowing a serious hazard to exist in consumers homes.
There is a very simple fix that would resolve probably 90% of the incidents. Flexible water catchers can be slid over the knob stems into the holes. Our previous KitchenAid cooktop did not have this problem; certainly it can be solved.
I also would like to know that new models are not designed/manufactured with the same hazard.
I hope you decide to take this matter seriously and will immediately take steps to begin solving this problem.

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid cooktop/oven KGRS202BSS0
I purchased a Kitchen Aid oven/cooktop #KGRS202BSS0 two weeks ago. Every day, since I have had it installed, I have found that the cooktop knobs automatically turn on when I lean over to turn on the oven or even when someone just passes by. As this stove has two very large flames in the front this is very dangerous. Yesterday, even though I am aware of this problem and am extra careful, I reached over to adjust the oven temperature and almost burnt my chest. Several times in the last two weeks, people coming into my home commented that they smelled gas. When I checked my cooktop, I found the knobs slightly on. As I am the mother and grandmother of young children, I remove all the knobs when they are home, but this item is dangerous for children and adults alike. I contacted Kitchen Aid, who told me that this is not the first time they have gotten this complaint, but this stove features a “soft touch” turn on. I asked about the safety and was told that yes, you have to be very careful, but there is nothing they could do about it. This cooktop is a safety hazard, a fire hazard and a burn hazard. I believe it should be recalled and I should have a replacement. I would be more than glad if someone from the CPSC would come down to my home to see this product

to [REDACTED] Purchase a Kitchen Aid gas cooktop, model number KFGS366VSS02. It was a brand new cooktop from a box that had appeared to have not been opened previously. It is still under warranty. it was installed by a licensed contractor and was in use for about 2 months prior to the incident. The gas source is natural gas provided by a public utility.
I put a pot of water on the back right burner. I turned the burner on and within seconds, a loud pop followed by flames shooting up from the two left burners occurred. The pressure wave was enough force to lift the left burner grill up about 12 inches, lift all the burner covers from every burner, move the center and right burner grills back one inch towards the back wall, and blow every stove knob off. I was standing facing the stove within 12 inches of the detonation and flash fire. I had to replace a knob to turn off the burner under the boiling water pot. I then went into the cabinet under the cooktop and turned off the gas shutoff valve. There was no odor of leaking gas prior to the incident. The items in the cabinet below the cooktop, where the cooktop pressure regulator is located, were in disturbed and the cabinet doors did not move. I have pictures of how the cooktop looked immediately after the event.
The contractor who installed the cooktop came immediately afterwards to ensure the cooktop was in a safe disposition. The contractor found that the pressure regulator gasket, that is part of the cooktop, was leaking. Note that this pressure regulator is outside the stainless steel box the cooktop burners sit in. There is a seal where the pressure regulator outlet piping enters the stainless steel box that should prevent gas from entering the stainless steel box where the burner orifices are contained. This was still intact.
I contacted Kitchen Aid who then sent out a repair person. The repair person confirmed the seal in the pressure regulator was leaking. When the cooktop cover was removed, the person found two screws that are suppose to secure the left front burner orifice in the bottom of the stainless steel box and the screws were stripped. The repair person felt that the leak appeared to originate from within the stainless steel box. Since the repair person felt there was no way to leak check everything that is contained within the stainless steel box and guarantee the safety of the cooktop, Kitchen Aid was contacted to authorize a replacement in kind. Kitchen Aid approved the replacement. I am awaiting the replacement installation within the next 2 weeks.
I am concerned the incident will occur again with the brand new cooktop. When I do a web search, I found several similar incidents involving Kitchen Aid cooktops. I am very fortunate that I am not dead or severely hurt from the explosion and flash fire incident. Please investigate this.

Our Glass Gas Cooktop exploded with glass shards spreading as far as 7 feet away. My children were close by, and my wife was standing right over the stove when it occurred. Miraculously, she was not harmed as the glass shards large, and small exploded and spread all over the kitchen, counters, floor, etc.
She went to light the burner, and it exploded. WE believe the cause was accumulation of gas under the glass which was ignited then by the spark ignitor...!!!
This appliance was less than 3 years old!

After using my gas Kitchenaid gas range the “off” button failed to operate making it impossible to turn the oven off without using the circuit breaker. This is not the first time it has happened. In August of 2008 we had it serviced and they replaced the switch membrane which corrected the problem. Until today, July 3, 2012. Granted it has been 4 years since we had the problem fixed the first time, it’s the same problem and Kitchenaid seems to be well aware of the issue but only “warranties” that part for 90 days even though it is a safety issue. In searching online I have found many people experiencing the same problem. It seems that even though they are aware that this is a safety issue that many people are experiencing they are not correcting the problem and forcing people like me to have it serviced and have the part replaced, while in the meantime we are not using the oven and keeping it turned off at the circuit breaker. I hope it doesn’t take someone getting hurt before they take responsibility for this issue. The model # KGRA806PSS02, Serial # XT1208237.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Stailess Double Oven (Gas - Propane) Model KGRS505X
I purchased a KitchenAid stainless gas double oven (Model KGRS505X) in January. On numerous occasions (at least ten), I have discovered the gas on in the house, only to find a knob on the front has been turned on, allowing the seepage of propane into the house. We have lived in over 15 locations, and have owned even more ovens, updating as needed or desired. My concern, reported to KitchenAid, is that the knobs are TOO easy to turn on. We have no children in the house playing ‘mischief’ on us. Again, the knobs are too easy to move; no definitive, hard stop or lock, allowing the gas to kick on if the knob is gently brushed against. I have found this happening by accident as I stand adjacent to the range. My wife and I enjoy the design, especially with the double oven, but feel this issue presents a huge safety problem which should be rectified before someone is injured. As mentioned, we have contacted KitchenAid. They are sending a representative to look at this issue. Please partner with the company for a quick fix.

Gas range turns-on on it’s own. Possible fire hazard. The electronic control panel on this model suffers from electrical interference which causes the oven to activate on it’s own. This problem is documented in Kitchenaid Service Pointer K4317305. I contacted Kitchenaid about this problem, but customer service said they would not pay for the fix since the product is out of warranty despite the possible fire hazard. I am currently using the Child Safety Lock feature to temporarily disable the control panel, however even the Child Safety Lock unlocks on it’s own.

KitchenAid Gas Range Architect Series II Model KGSK901 I bought this range in December 2007 and installed it in early 2008. I have had numerous problems ever since, among them the fact that the oven frequently doesn’t light but leaks gas. I had KitchenAid’s authorized service (A&E Factory Service) out on December 10, 2010 to fix this problem and also to adjust the burners because they blew out (and leaked gas) when on simmer. As this was beyond the warranty, I paid the entire cost of $129. The burners are now OK, but the oven repair did not work. About one out of five times that I turn on the oven, it does not light but it does leak gas.

Here is an excerpt from the email letter I sent to Kitchen Aid Consumer Dept.
“There is a problem with the Roll-Out Rack on my range. It is very slick on the top of the shelf, as well as the roll-out rack itself. There is no back stopper on the shelf, and food pans tend to slide backwards when I slide out the rack. This has caused serious trouble, trying to retrieve the pans. The latest incident was a sheet full of cookies. The sheet slid backward as I pulled out the rack, and tipped the pan, dumping the whole batch into the rear of the oven! This is a dangerous and frustrating situation. According to the manual, this rack should have a tilted-up stopper, as the others in the range do. I would like Kitchen Aid to send me the proper rack for my range and prevent further cooking disasters.”
model: KGRS505XSS01 serial: D10240130
This is a gas range that I purchased in January of 2011. The range has two ovens. The Roll-Out Rack I am concerned about is a safety issue. The rack is a special feature, withball-bearings to facilitate removing pans. But it has no back stopper to prevent the pans from sliding backwards off the slick rack, and tipping into the rear of the range cavity. That is what happened to me. In addition to the danger to persons using it (I burned my hand trying to retrieve the pan) it could constitute a fire hazard if the contents of a pan were dumped into the bottom of the oven, at the burner level. I was lucky it was only a pan of cookies .Although they became a burned lump in the bottom of the oven, they did not catch fire thanks to the quick action of my grandson.

The product, in the report: Glass, Gas cooktop 5 burner
We have a Kitchen AId cooktop (PN KGCT366GBL1). During dinner the glass cooktop spontaneously exploded shooting bits of glass throughout our kitchen. Luckily there was nothing on top of the cooktop or our children werent near. One of my smaller children did suffer a minor cut on his foot from teh glass on the floor. When we called Kitchen Aid, they had little concern about how dangerous the product was, but quickly had someone from their “safety” group try to get something on record so they wouldnt have any liability. When I told them the danger of spontaneous exploding glass, they said they have heard of this before, but “that’s what happens with glass”. If they know the danger of such an event this product and all of its kind should be recalled immediately. Obviously they told me they wouldnt replace the stove nor pay for its repair. They did send an authorized repair service ([REDACTED]) and they said it was conclusive the product exploded through no fault of my own, but this product is not very sturdy (although at the time we paid almost $1000 for the product) and that we would have no luck or support from Kitchen Aid (from his experience). After looking at the web we saw many more instances (one example: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/kit_stoves.html). I request that Kitchen Aid either put a warning on all their glass cooktops for sale and immediately do a recall to protect consumers from any future injuries.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Double Oven Gas Range
Consumer feels his range poses a potential fire hazard. The consumer has a 5 burner 2 oven gas range. The product has a larger oven on the bottom. The range is digital and has a larger oven on the bottom. The top oven has a single rack to place product while the bottom oven has two racks. The range is freestanding. The product has coil burners instead of a smooth top surface. The consumer was cooking for about two hours while her oven was set to bake at 350 degrees. The consumer emptied a bag of potatoes, half a bag of onions and 6 chickens with oil on the bottom of the pan into the range. The pan took up the entire oven with just four inches of spaces between the pan and the front door of the oven.
The consumer stated that the issue with the range is the bottom rack where the pan was placed has no “lip” to prevent contents of the oven from slipping to the floor of the oven. The consumer stated the pan had fallen on the to the oven floor while she was cooking a resulted in the oil, chicken, potatoes, and onions catching fire while in the oven. The consumer tried to shut off the oven but the oil had already caught fire and there was nothing she could to douse or prevent the fire. The consumer put on an oven mitten and pulled out the product that was burning and one of the oven racks that caught fire while it was covered in the oil that spilt.
The consumer stated that she shut the oven door after pulling out the burning contents of the range and allowed 2 hours for the range to burn itself out. The consumer stated that the range was altered as a result of the incident. The front glass door of the oven is supposed to be purple but now is discolored and the range now emits an odor. The guard that goes over the gas line is now discolored and burnt. The consumer opted not to call the fire department at the time of the incident. The consumer suffered a minor burn to her right wrist. The consumer did not receive medical attention after the incident. The consumer has yet to call the manufacturer or the retailer.

Baking in the oven and when time to turn off the oven it would not turn off. This happened a couple times so now we do not use it. We need to get it fixed but the cost is not in our budget with labor cost too.

The product, in the report: Gas Stove with five burners
Caller purchased 5 burner gas stove in mid 2009 and had no problems with it until December 2010 when she was broiling, smelled an odd odor and noticed that her knobs on the stove were melting. Oven was set to “broil” which she turned off. She has had to call for service five times with the sixth service call scheduled for Saturday, July 9th to replace the knobs again. She has had to pay for the knob replacement set for tomorrow. Reason being given for her being charged to replace the knobs this second time is that the stove is manufacturer to perform this way and she can purchase knobs any time from them.
Due to health issues, caller has to broil or bake all her foods
She was told to call Kichen Aid because *** thought it should be taken out of her house.
Kitchen aid told her this is how the stove is manufactured.
She told them that she had replaced the knobs before and was told that was fine and she could purchase knobs at any time from them.
Caller would like this stove replaced by a differeen model.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid gas cooktop Model #KFGS366VSS01 Serial Number D278696
Kitchenaid Model KFGS366VSS01 cooktop was purchased in February 2010. From the beginning it was shooting flames into the air almost to the grease filter of our kitchen exhaust fan (approximately 12-inches!) After three service calls, the installer and the manufacturer have not been able to fix this unsafe condition and the manufacturer refuses to replace it. I have been unable to use the entire cooktop as i am afraid that the huge flame will burn the house down. The last time i tried it, today, the flame height has gotten worse and actually went all the way up to the metal filter. The gas company has been out to our house and has found nothing wrong with the gas lines that would account for this unsafe condition.

The product, in the report: Stainless steel slide in gas range Kitchen Aid model # KGSA906ps
Kitchen Aid slide in gas range model # KGSA906ps won’t turn off...needs a new switch membrane. After troubleshooting this online, it is extremely common for Kitchen Aid and Maytag ranges to have this problem yet they take no initiative in recalling the product or making changes to the switch membrane.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid 30 Inch, 5 Burner Freestanding Double Gas Range
KitchenAid Double Gas Range Model #KGRS505XSS01, Serial # D10949212 was purchased in February 2011. Burner knobs are located on front panel of range and do not have a push in to turn feature. With the slightest motion, lean up to use microwave, even walking past, knobs turn on letting gas escape. This has occurred at least a dozen times already. Today I returned home to a gas filled home after several hours and realized 2 of the knobs were turned AGAIN. I hate to think of the explosion that could have occured had a light switch been turned on there was a spark. Upon looking on-line, there are numerous complaints of same hazardous problem. I contacted KitchenAid this afternoon and was told “most ranges are made that way today, it can not be fixed, it is how the range was manufactured.” This is an unacceptable response from KitchenAid and a horrific danger. I have older children who are always in the kitchen and have instructed them to stay away from the range, I can not imagine what could happen with very small children in the house. There is absolutely no lock feature for the knobs. Can you please help me?

The product, in the report: Gas Range Oven
Caller is reporting that the gas range oven he purchased in 2002 has a history of its oven ignition breaking which leads to gas being released when the oven is turned on. In 2004, he turned on the oven, set the temperature to 350 degrees. He then left the kitchen expecting the oven to light and heat up to the desired temperature, at which point, a single alarm is sounded. After an extended period of time and not hearing the alarm, the caller returned to the oven and noticed that the temperature gauge noted “low” and there was the smell of gas. Because it is difficult to see the actual oven flames he was unable to see whether the oven had lit or not. Other than the “low” reading, there was no warning that ignition was not working and that gas is being released. The caller turned off the oven. He called the manufacturer who sent a repair tech the next day who replaced the oven ignition at no cost to the consumer.
In 2006-7 the ignition broke again and manufacturer paid for a repair person to install a new ignition. In 2009 the ignition broke again. This time, hoewever, the manufacturer said that as it was an old product, they were not responsible for it. The caller responded that it was a dangerous situation caused by a dangerous product. The manufacturer sent a repair technician the next day who replaced the ignition at no cost to the caller.
Most recently, on August 30, 2011, the situation repeated itself. However this time the manufacturer showed great resistance to repairing the ignition. After a couple of hours of discussion, the caller had to pay for the service tech to inspect the oven to verify the broken ignition. After which the manufacturer agreed to pay for the part, but not the installation. Caller believes this range has a serious life threatening defect. It should have been recalled and replaced.
