The product, in the report: I am reporting a serious safety concern involving my KitchenAid double-oven gas range, model KFGD500ESS. The burner control knobs are located on the front of the range and can be accidentally turned when someone brushes or leans against them. Recently, a knob was unintentionally moved without the burner igniting. We subsequently smelled gas in our home. This was extremely frightening and created a potentially dangerous situation. I contacted KitchenAid and reported the incident. KitchenAid opened case #[REDACTED] and instructed me to discontinue use of the range while the matter was being addressed. I asked KitchenAid whether redesigned knobs, an approved safety modification, knob guard, retrofit, or other permanent solution was available. I was ultimately told that I would have to pay approximately $200 for a service technician to come to my home. I am concerned that consumers can unintentionally activate the gas controls without realizing it, potentially allowing unburned gas into the home. I have also seen other consumer reviews describing concerns about accidental activation of the knobs on this model. I am requesting that CPSC document and review this safety concern, including whether similar incidents have been reported involving this KitchenAid model.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid gas range (Model KSDB900ESS2)
The control knobs on the KitchenAid gas range (Model KSDB900ESS2) appear to pose a safety risk. The knobs can rotate into the ON position with extremely minimal contact, including accidental bumps. This creates a potential fire and gas leak hazard and warrants investigation.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid 6.0 cu. ft. Double Oven Gas Range with Self-Cleaning Convection Oven in Stainless Steel Store SKU # 1001357660
I purchased a Kitchen Aid gas oven/range in 2023. Immediately my family started feeling sick and smelling propane. We had to evacuate the house multiple times. We called back the installer and he detected a leak at the regulator. Tried to have it fixed. Problem continued. Contacted kitchen aid multiple times, after a combined effort of over 4 hours on hold I got someone to come out and check it. She found the leak in the regulator. Replaced it. Same problem continued. Replaced it again. Same thing. Replaced it again. Finally they just refused to do anything else about it. Still leaking. We had an emergency shut off valve installed so we could shut off the gas completely when not cooking. Asked for a replacement stove multiple times and was refused. Kitchen aid has refused to do anything about it. It is a $2400 top of the line appliance. They’re still selling it and multiple reviews saying the same thing. On top of this the sides get so hot it burns the counter/cabinets, the knobs are so loose you can turn the gas on with just a slight bump (located right in reach of children/pets,) and the igniters go out contstantly since we bought it which also causes leaks.

The product, in the report: 30 Commercial-Style KitchenAid KFGC500JSS07 DD1501144 1/2/25, gas range
After moving into my new home January 2025, I began using my KitchenAid Commercial range. Every time I reach over the range to clean the back, my body hits the front knobs and turns the burner on. One evening after retiring to bed I forgot to turn my house alarm on went out of bedroom right behind kitchen and smelled gas and checked knobs and one was on. The next day I called Whirlpool for service and the technician who came to my house told me that nothing could be done to fix burners coming on if bumped. I told him I have three young Grandbabies and he said to try and find child proof knobs. I had a larger KitchenAid commercial range in my previous house and the knobs were totally different and never had an issue from 2015 to 2025. After researching I found that these newer oven parts are now manufactured in Mexico. After reading article in [REDACTED] today about ranges recalled being bought at [REDACTED] for same reason I thought you should know about KitchenAid.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid professional gas range 36 inch
I have the KitchenAid gas professional 36 inch gas range. And a number of occasions, the burners have been turned on.Without knowing it. They take practically no effort to turn on and can happen just by reaching over the stove. Gas has been turned on a number of times without us realizing. One time there was something on the stove that almost caught fire.

No one hurt Made Feb 3, 2026, sent to the company Feb 6, 2026, published by CPSC Feb 23, 2026
The product, in the report: KitchenAid 36’’ 6-Burner Commercial-Style Gas Rangetop; Appliance Color: Stainless Steel; 7-7/16 inches high, 35-3/4 inches wide, 27-7/8 inches deep
We have a new construction home (escrow closed on 2/21/25) and have a safety issue with our KitchenAid Gas Cooktop (Model: KCGC506JSS00). The cooktop has knobs on the front face. The knobs easily turn on when people walk by the cooktop and brush into the knobs. This has happened multiple times where no one was aware the knob was turned on and thus the gas was on. I put a work order in with the builder about this safety issue. The builder sent out a certified KitchenAid technician. On 12/23/25, this technician came to our house and called KitchenAid and, per the technician, KitchenAid said the knobs are all working as designed. On 2/3/26, I called KitchenAid about the safety issue and spoke to a Safety Department representative who said there is nothing they can do about the issue because a certified technician said the unit is functioning as intended. To date, we have not had any injuries but this issue is extremely dangerous as it has numerous times led to the gas unknowingly and unintentionally being on for hours.

No incident, no one hurt Made Jan 26, 2026, sent to the company Jan 29, 2026, published by CPSC Feb 17, 2026
The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid 36 Commercial Style Gas Rangetop
The knobs on this Rangetop are at 36 and can easily be started by brushing on the stove as you walk by. This is a safety concern as there is no need to push in to start and there is no safety switch to deactivate the knobs. Since it is so easily accessible and there is no lock or deterrent a child could activate it. This has happened a dozen times since installation.
UPDATED ON 2/12/2026: [I received a call this morning about this case number from Whirlpool. Their resolution for the front mounted knobs with no safety locks is for me to go purchase child proof covers for a brand new $3000 stove top. The youngest person in this house is 21. What about all the other units in households purchased by other unknowing consumers?
The problem is with the construction and non-safety compliance of this unit. The other resolution was to send a representative to check the device to see if it’s working as expected after saying, the knob will activate upon being brushed starting the gas or flame. This could cause a fire or carbon monoxide poisoning. Neither of these are acceptable resolutions. Units with the propensity to release gas or cause fire should never leave the manufacturer. ]

The product, in the report: KitchenAid 36’’ 6-Burner Commercial-Style Gas Rangetop Model: KCGC506JSS Serial: DE1008691 Registered: 05/05/2025
Big Safety Problem: My KitchenAid gas cooktop (Model KCGC506JSS00, Serial # DE1008691) is a hazard. The Issue: The burner knobs are way too easy to turn oneven just brushing against them can do it. Bad Outcomes: When this happens, either: Gas leaks out (no fire, but bad news). Gas flows and actually lights up by itself (fire danger!). High Risk: This can lead to fire, explosion, or serious gas leaks, which is obviously a major safety threat. KitchenAid’s Response: I called KitchenAid, and their “fix” was basically useless: “remove the knobs.” Seriously? Need for Action: I’m sending this to your agency because KitchenAid didn’t help. Please investigate this model (and others like it) to see if it meets safety standards and make them fix the design so the gas/burners can’t accidentally turn on.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid 36 Inch Wide 6 Burner Gas Rangetop with Three-Level Convertible Grates
I have a KitchenAid 36 36-inch wide 6 6-burner gas Rangetop with Three-Level Convertible Grates. The issue is that the front knobs on the gas range top turn on WAY too easily. Without knowing, you can bump into the range top and the knob will turn on enough to allow the gas to flow from the valve often filling the house with natural gas. EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. This incident has occurred more than a dozen times since moving into the home in October 2024. It was not until December of 2024 that I realised the problem was coming from the gas range top knobs moving to an open position for several weeks. I contacted KitchenAid they suggested that a technician come to look at the issue, so the solution from them was to turn in a safety report. Again contacted KitchenAid and received notice that I could remove knobs each time of use, add child safety knobs, or just be careful...no solution...just a band-aid fix. In looking into this issue, I have found reviews that mentioned this same issue on this same range top for many years. I also found several reviews on the KitchenAid site with similar issues noted. In addition, I contacted my local neighborhood site and took a poll asking if any others in the development had upgraded and purchased the appliance package with this same gas rangetop. In approximately 1 week, I have received 23 comments telling of the same issue with their gas rangetop. This is a VERY DANGEROUS issue. THIS AFTERNOON my family became extremely groggy, fell asleep with the gas on, woke to my dog choking/coughing and both my husband and myself having horrible headaches. This is when I once again noticed the odor, but do not have a clue when the knob got turned to allow the valve to allow the gas to flow. SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET HURT

My KitchenAid gas stove (ksgg700ess2) has knobs that are extremely easy to turn and may unknowingly be turned on from light incidental contact, allowing gas to flow. Despite diligently checking the knobs, I have now arrived home twice to the smell of gas in my kitchen and discovered that a knob had somehow been turned on. The knobs on this stove are uniquely dangerous due to how easily they can be turned unintentionally.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid 36” 6-Burner Commercial-Style Gas Rangetop / Cooktop, model KCGC506JSS00, serial number DD4203603.
Subject: Safety Concern Report: KitchenAid Gas Cooktop Model KCGC506JSS00 (Serial Number: DD4203603)
Dear U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission,
I am writing to bring to your attention a serious safety concern regarding my KitchenAid gas cooktop, model KCGC506JSS00, serial number DD4203603. This issue not only affects my appliance but appears to be a recurring problem across similar KitchenAid models, based on feedback I have encountered.
The primary issue involves the burner controls, which can unintentionally turn on with even the slightest contact, such as brushing against them while walking by.
In these instances, one of two outcomes occurs: 1. Gas flows without ignition/combustion. 2. Gas flows and ignites unintentionally.
These incidents happen without deliberate user input and create an environment susceptible to severe hazards, including fire, explosion, or exposure to gas leakage. This poses a substantial threat to users’ safety and well-being.
I have contacted KitchenAid to address this issue but feel it is necessary to escalate this matter to your agency to ensure public safety. KitchenAids response was to remove the knobs.
I urge you to investigate whether this appliance, and potentially other models with similar designs, meet current safety standards. If necessary, I request that corrective actions be taken to prevent unintentional activation of gas flow or ignition.
Thank you for your attention to this critical safety matter. Please let me know if further details or actions are required from my side. Sincerely,

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid residential gas range and oven.
After a normal night of cooking dinner for our family and friends (4 adults and 4 children) our Kitchen Aid oven began to smoke and smell like chemicals from the back vent. We called the fire department and they removed the back panel of the oven and found that the wrap insulation was smoldering. I want to report this because the oven has been properly used and maintained for only 1.5 years and this should not have happened and it could have been tragic. Additionally, Kitchen Aid will not fully replace our oven at their expense because it is older than 1 year.

A kid walks by the stove and brushes gently against it and gas starts escaping. Our repair guy did the same thing. I did the same without realizing it except the gas did ignite. I had the stove on for about 2 hours without me knowing it, I was out of the room. The product is being used in the Kitchen. No injuries. In speaking to Kitchen Air (or Whirlpool), this cooktop is ADA compliant and they will not do anything about it. When I told them the cost would be over $2300, he said there is no official fix for the problem as it’s not a problem because it’s ADA compliant.

Kitchenaide Dual Fuel Oven KSDB900ESS (6-7 years old). When preheating, the oven vibrated violently and then flames (like a blow torch) melted a hole in the bottom of the oven and the oven shut down. Kitchenaide saftey sent out a rep to inspect. He immediately knew what the problem was - apparently the lower electric elements breakdown and bubble up, causing an electrical arc when it touches the pan. So this is a know problem internally, but seems they are doing nothing about it. There is a gas line connected to the stove - this could have started a major house fire.

I purchased the Kitchen Aid Oven Range (KFGD500ESS) on October 24, 2021. The oven leaked gas in the beginning but we thought this may have been normal for new ranges. Over the next few months it continued to leak gas so we called KitchenAid for a repair. They replaced a valve to resolve the issue. It’s now been less than two years and the oven is still leaking gas and the technician is replacing the valve again. Kitchenaid will only continue to repair the unit and not replace. From looking online this model KFGD500ESS is defective as many have complained about gas smells.

Caller stated the gas knobs are easy to turn on by brushing against it, without the user’s knowledge causing the gas to escape. He stated that it has been ongoing for almost a year. Caller stated that he contacted the company and they advised to send out a service technician for inspection. Caller stated that they are aware of this safety issue. Caller feels that these knobs are unsafe and should be reported.
I have a KitchenAid double oven gas range, (model KFGDS00ESS04, serial number DX3609098) with what I believe has potential for serious injury. Specifically, the knobs that turn on the top burners are very sensitive to touch which can cause them to be turned on without the user knowing it. The simple act of brushing against one of the knobs while leaning over to stir a pot on the back burner can cause the front burner to partially turn on releasing gas. In some cases, the burner will actually ignite posing a potential for burns from a clothing fire. This anomaly occurred several times over the past year.
I believe there is a design defect, in that, the gas starts flowing too soon before the igniter is activated and that the force needed to push in the knob is too light.
On 7/11/2023 KitchenAid sent a technician to examine the range. His conclusion based on my understanding was that there was no problem and that the range was working as designed.
Although the occurrence of this happening is relatively low the consequences are high. The resulting injuries from burns or explosions could be life threating. I hope that the Commission will take a serious look into this issue.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid gas cooktop
My KitchenAid gas cooktop exploded. We noticed one burner’s knob was more difficult to turn the day before. We thought it was dirty. Next morning I went to check the knob and when I turned it the entire cooktop exploded violently. All cast iron gratings were thrown into the air. There was a flash of a fireball around the cooktop for a second. All burner assemblies, knobs and small parts were blown off and scattered throughout the kitchen. No one was injured thank God. I was able to turn the knob off and turn the gas supply to the cooktop off before quickly evacuating the home. I called 911 and the [REDACTED] County Fire Dept came out to check the home and gas lines.

The product, in the report: This is a KitchenAid gas oven range.
I bought a house brand new with all new Kitchen Aid kitchen appliance. Within the first 11 months I just simply closed the oven door. I didn’t slam it ! and I did not hit the door! Upon the door closing the oven the outer glass shattered. A lot of glass was on the floor - I had bare feet - my small dog was in the kitchen too. I cleaned up the glass as best I could. But the glass kept falling out - every few minutes. Then I could see that it was completely shattered to every edge. It was just a matter of time before the rest would come out. I carefully removed the remaining shattered glass for our safety. I called KitchenAid/Whirlpool and they are saying this is cosmetic - but I shouldn’t use the oven - so how is this only cosmetic. This is a dangerous oven design. KitchenAid Model # KSGG700EBS3. Can you help me? KitchenAid is not doing anything.

Noticed a natural gas smell in the kitchen. We were using the simmer function of a gas top stove of a kitchenaid (model KSGG700ESS2). My wife then started to use the oven. We didn’t know this at the time, but when the oven ignites, the flame from the simmer goes out but keeps dumping out gas as if it were still lit. We didn’t notice this for at least 30-45 minutes, that’s when we smelled the gas. If we had lit another stove top section, or even waited longer, possibly the stove re-ignition could have set off enough gas to cause an explosion. We had the same issue occur at our first house, different stove but same exact model. The techs that were sent out said “there is nothing else we can do. It is working as designed but not as intended”

We lost our home in the Easter tornados of 2020. We had only been in that new construction since December of 2017. We started this new construction 4/15/2021. Due to the Covid situation, we began ordering supplies early on from previous construction because of the supply and demand problems. All purchases needed a minimum of three to six months prior to any delivery estimate, and were given an estimated delivery date on ANY APPLIANCE, of one year. We purchased from previous experiences, and by previous models. We made purchase in June of 2021, for all appliances, and was requested to make a 50% deposit. By mistake our salesman charged the full amount instead of a deposit. I let it stand because we knew what we wanted and the appliances, even though were a year out of expected delivery, would be paid for and would not become an extra expense at the end of the building phase. We purchased a new KitchenAid Pro Gas Range that was installed on or in the days immediately after April 6, 2022. The range turns “on” without any physical action. The range will turn on simply by clothes touching the dials as a person walks by, even though we have not physically felt any physical interaction, but can only imagine clothes some how touching the dials, as no physical contact takes place. The range has already started one fire. The range has also burned the right side of my hand while cleaning it. The manufacturer is no longer answering any emails concerning the danger. We were contacted on a Saturday morning and a representative who did not identify herself, and did not in the beginning of the call, tell either of us the reason for calling. She wanted to tell me what goes on in my home with the range instead of any attempt to listen to the actual happenings. I thought she was calling in response to my email of Friday 11/18/2022 , the night before, reporting the injury I sustained. She told me after denying my date of delivery, that she refused to read the documents that I had furnished. She refused to read the description of the sales invoice which showed beneath the range’s description, the delivery date, even though she admitted to reading from it during the call, as we spoke. I was told after I explained both husband and I are disabled, and was concerned to let our monthly cleaner near the range, that it turns on “by itself” so easily for handicapped people. I was told that our clothing was turning it on from contact and that was normal. I was told since it worked no repair was needed. I did not ask for repair. I reported a severe safety fire issue. I sent in pictures. No response. I asked for her direct email and was refused. I wanted to send her, since she was refusing to read information in front of her, and as she was reading from the invoice, that has under the range description, the delivery date, I was hoping she would change her attitude and do what was right. I was on my cell and the call dropped. No return call. No return emails. I emailed the company three times from their original email to me requesting the information I sent in, describing the call from the unnamed representative, and as I had requested from her a supervisor and she had also refused my request, I again asked for another person, above the unnamed representative, to call or contact me, but not her, again, at any time. I sent in the email from our appliance salesman giving the date of delivery and explanation of why the entire amount was paid in advance. Twice. No response. I had called in for a safety inspection. I have been ignored several times. I tried to call the safety department several times with no success. I tried to call the KitchenAid company several times with no response and I was unable to leave any message. I reported the safety issue 11/13/2022, the first time. I reported the self clean situation in same call. The Safety Dept., called me 11/15/2022, and left a voicemail. The woman who called the day after my burn of 11/18, was calling to follow up ONLY the call to me of 11/15 where they left a voicemail. I added them to my contacts so all calls would come through. I was unable to determine corporate email/number as all too conflicting. I sent in pictures of the dials that do not align to the manufacturer. I have been ignored concerning my report of injury. The range has repeatedly turned on a gas grate by just walking past the appliance. The range was purchased because we had the same model in our home we now call the tornado house. However that range had a control lock that prevented the range coming on while cleaning. This one does not. The KitchenAid Company has a long message about Covid back orders, still on their current message while on hold, but will not recognize my range being back ordered until my delivery date even though proof has been supplied. For my first call, I had to wait over an hour and a half before I could speak to a customer service representative. We were Already moving into this new construction home, before the range was delivered. I sent in all the proof, prior to call of 11/19/2022, where woman refused to acknowledge actual possession date and warranty date of 4/6/2022. I had ordered KitchenAid garbage disposal on same invoice as all appliances but was still on back order at time of delivery so had to go to Lowes and substitute another brand so it could be installed by contractor at time of all other appliances. I have fully registered the product long before my calls and used the delivery/install date of April 6, 2022. I provided proof of delivery. Since the 70’s between Jenn Air appliances, and KitchenAid appliances, we’ve have spent close to $30,000, with this company and feel totally ripped off by the company’s action to a very serious safety fire hazard. I cannot get the oven to self clean without having to go to phone app. The Range will not manually self clean even though there is a manual dial choice on the actual range. The Range has turned on an “eye” by itself so many times, my husband and I are terrified we and our pets are going to be burned alive in our sleep regardless of our required alarms as we are now 70 and 76. The Company has shown they could care less. We paid $6299.00, plus tax for the range of $9.25%, plus delivery, and it had a retail at time of purchase of $7599.00., and has a current MSRP of $8399.00 per their website on todays date of 11/30/2022. We have completely lost all hope of the manufacturer responding to this very serious situation and them honoring our date of possession for any warranty situation, which both the malfunction of self cleaning only, happening without use of their app, and the problem with the self starting fires/lighting and the knobs not being properly aligned, are being ignored. We believe that due to the Covid back order situation, with the supply and demand problems, they first dropped the control lock out functionality due to cost and haste in manufacturing appliances and the defective alignment of knobs and self lighting, is with absolutely no regard to the consumer and their only concern is their profits, even to the extent of being told there is a life danger situation. These concerns have been proven to us by their utter lack of acknowledgement of both the delivery date and the lack of response to all proof given on possession, and fire to the new home and my injury. Thanking you in advance for any help you may be able to offer us in regards to this, in our opinion, defective and deadly appliance.

The product, in the report: Gas cooktop
We just purchased the kitchenaid gas cooktop, KCGS956ESS02 and had it installed this week. The black screen printing of the control panel is missing and you can barely read the high and low and off settings. We have the accompanying pop up vent which has the black screen printing so it is very noticeable. This is clearly a mistake in the manufacturing process. It is very dangerous to stick your head down by the burners to see the writing. We also have a small leak in the center burner fron underneath. The finish is also very rough and does not clean up well and snags wiping cloths leaving paper and cloth fibers on the stove top to burn.

The 3 individual grates are knob-and-channel connected and do not stay in place. They ALL move off of position together, that is, at the same time. This has happened MULTIPLE time since purchase. Once again on 7-5-22, when I was I using two burners, the grates slid over on top of the on/off knobs as I was moving a pot from one of the burners. The grates slid over to the front side ON TOP OF the knobs--which are plastic so I could NOT turn off the cook top. AND it kept clicking send more release of gas into the room because when you push the knobs down (as you must to turn on) you release the gas before you turn a knob to ignite. This very scary and dangerous. Fortunately, no one has gotten injured... yet!

The product, in the report: Stainless steel, gas range, Kitchen Aid, Model KSGG700ESS3 Series RA4313151
In December 2021 I purchased a replacement gas stove, convection oven from Pacific Sales. The range was a replacement unit for a faulty [REDACTED] range. January 2022 noticed the unit front panels were stained and the self-cleaning feature did not work, now, baked on stains cannot be removed. February, noticed that unit did not heat properly, took 1 hour 45 minutes to roast cauliflower and still unevenly cooked. April 2022, warranty company came out to assess the problem. Determined control panel was wrong, and, that the warming drawer facing was defective. They replaced both. June 2022, while baking on 350 degrees F, after 25 minutes the front glass panel exploded. Warranty company and Pacific Sales contacted. Tech came out to service the Kitchen Aid. Said that he needed to order a new door and temperature control panel so that he could do a complete diagnostic assessment. One week later, came back only replaced the glass. Said that he did not need to replace the temperature control panel, and did not give a rationale. After he left, I used the oven and, noticed that the kitchen was hot, and the adjacent wood cabinet was too hot to touch as were the adjacent stainless steel cabinet knobs. I have made three calls to the warranty company. They said that they would escalate to a field supervisor since this was a safety issue. Two days later, no one has called back. The unit is faulty and unsafe. A determination as to why the glass door exploded was not determined. I have been dismissed by Pacific Sales and, Paradise Appliance company.

My new gas stove has the knobs on the front and it turns the gas on when someone leans on the stove. The gas can go on, but not spark the lighter, so it just leaks gas. I usually notice it and turn it off. One day I came home and my husband was dozing at the dining room table. He was unresponsive and I smelled gas. I immediately turned on fans and opened windows. He was groggy, but OK. I complained to the manufacturer but they did nothing. I asked to contact the engineers who design stoves, but they tried to send repair people out to look at the stove. The repair company said that I would be charged for a service call because it was not covered under the warranty. They told me to get childproof locks. The plastic covers did not fit my stove. I now remove the knobs when I’m not using the stove. I have seen old stoves with the knobs on the side. Why can’t they still make stoves that are safe for children and old people?

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid 6 burner gas cooktop with the knobs out front. Model KCGC506JSS.
Gas leak due to knobs bumped into on position but before activating auto on electric spark. Came home to the entire kitchen smelling like gas. Dogs where in the house while we were out shopping. Kitchen aid slide in 6 burner gas cooktop. Model KCGC506JSS. Thankfully no injuries but this happens often with the slightest touch of the knob. Causing repeated leaks. A short internet search seems to show its a common problem. There is even a reported solution of using rubber grommets to increase the force required to push in then turn knob.

The product, in the report: The product is a Kitchen Aid, five burner cooktop, stainless steel Finnish. It is a KitchenAid® 36.25’’ Stainless Steel Gas Cooktop- Model KCGS956ESS
We purchased a new KitchenAid five burner cook top with a Stainless steal finish. When the cooktop arrived, we had the owner of the store where we made the purchase to inspect it. The writing on the cook top, is so faint you cannot read it. The writing is impossible to read. Therefore, you cannot determine what level the burner is turned on, if its on or off, etc. We contacted Whirlpool, who on two separate occasions sent out new cook tops that were identical. Contacting whirlpool, they eventually said after several discussions there was not a safety issue and they would not address it. As a retired fire service professional, I know this is a safety issue and it needs to be addressed.

The product, in the report: Stainless Steel Kitchenaid 5.8 cubic ft gas range. Model KSGG700ESS2KSGG700ESS2
We ordered a Kitchenaid 5.8 cubic ft gas range and upon using the oven for the first time and subsequently, the product releases toxic odors. This appears to be common among many ranges but there is no disclosure on what causes this, the health risks, or even how to mitigate it. After much research, I can only conclude that it is an acrylic in the insulation burning off which is indeed toxic to humans. No customer rep can confirm. I have had a splitting headache for days, my young son has irritated burning eyes in spite of our efforts to use ventilation fan, circulating fan, air purifiers and all windows open. This “burn off’ process should be completed by the manufacturer before being distributed to consumers. There is only limited mention of this. We don’t know how long to expect this, the distributer did not disclose this process and manufacturer has not provided any information on the safety or identification of these toxic volatile substances. There should be substantial compensation for health risks posed to humans and manufacturer negligence.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid Gas range. I imagine that these burner controls exist on a wide variety of Kitchenaid ranges made around the same time. Model KDRS505S
Burner-controlling gas valves on our Kitchenaid range, KDRS505S (purchased in 2012) have failed twice. Both failures involved the gas/flame being STUCK ON. In other words, the result of the failure is a continuous open flame in the house. The homeowner then must pull the range away from the wall (while the burning continues to burn) and try to find the gas shut-off. This is plainly unsafe and a fire hazard. The first failure was in 2016. In my opinion, Kitchenaid should go out to homes and replace all of these burner controls with ones that either won’t fail or, if they do fail, fall in the burner OFF position. Alternatively, if they can’t make reliable burner controls, there should be a retrofit shutoff valve near the front.

The product, in the report: 30 inch 5 burner slide in gas range made by Kitchenaid. Model number KSGG700ESS2. Stainless steal with black cooktop.
I’d like to report a safety issue with the Kitchenaid Gas Range (model number: KSGG700ESS2). I’ve had the range in my home for around 2 weeks and have have 2 instances where a burner knob has been found on- even if the range hasn’t been used that day. I believe the knob is too sensitive to the touch and any brush as you walk by can turn the gas on without igniting the pilot light. This results in gas filling the kitchen until we smell it and can open windows/doors. This is concerning in the case where we leave home and don’t realize the knob was knocked. Each time, I have been the one to notice the issue, but no one is using the range at the time it’s found (for several hours at least). No injuries have occurred yet, but it could be a matter of time before the gas causes an explosion in the house.

I own two KitchenAid Ranges/Ovens Model No. KSSGG700ESS1, Serial Nos. R64721581 and R64318813. This stove is very easy to turn on the gas burners. You can actually turn them on just by bumping into them. I called KitchenAid and was told this is normal for this design. I have lost my sense of smell and it has been at least 3-5 times my adult children have come in the house and say that they smell gas. The burner could be moved from off position to the slightest on position by an easy touch. Thank God nothing has happened due to this but this can turn into something serious. I had purchased these plastic covers and had them installed but I have a lot of problems trying to open them to use the stove and eventually just took them off. Is there anything that can be done about this? Please advise.

KitchenAid gas cooktop ignited internally and started a fire. All the controls were off and the stovetop had not been used for a few hours. My wife was cleaning it when it started sparking and we saw flames under the glass cooktop surface, and coming out one of the controls. To be exact, she sprayed a cleaner onto the surface prior to fire starting. After turning off the breaker and quickly dousing with water, the fire was stopped. After removing all knobs smoke came out and smelled like an electrical fire. Strong scent of burnt wires.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Model KCG5550ESS01 gas cooktop
We recently purchased a KitchenAid Model KCG5550ESS01 gas cooktop for a new house we are building. We selected this appliance because it is very similar to a KitchenAid gas cooktop we purchased approximately 6 years ago for our current house. We were disturbed to learn the old and new units work differently in a material way. With the older unit when a burner knob is depressed and rotated to any position (ignite, low, medium, high or any point in between) the igniter continues to function until the burner ignites whether or not the knob continues to be depressed and regardless of whether the knob has been rotated to the ignite, low, medium or high positions. With the new one the igniter stops functioning once the knob is no longer depressed whether or not the burner is ignited. If the knob is rotated to “ignite” it functions property, but if the knob is rotated past “ignite” to another setting (and there is nothing to prevent that from happening) the igniter quits functioning but the gas continues to flow. To compound the problem, the lettering on the unit identifying the various positions of the knobs is so dim that you almost have to strain to read it. In other words, only a very attentive adult, familiar with the design characteristics of this unit, can operate it safely. An inattentive adult, one not familiar with the characteristics of the unit or a child can easily turn the gas on to a burner, inadvertently turn off the igniter and because the gas continues to flow cause a fire or explosion. At our request KitchenAid sent out a technician who said the unit was operating as designed.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Model# KSGG700ESS1 Gas Range/Oven
KitchenAid Model # KSGG700ESS1 Gas Range/Oven. Knobs for gas cooktop are located on the front of the unit. The slightest unintentional brushing on any of the knobs will cause the gas to flow to the burner, many times without igniting the gas. This has happened numerous times including today. On one occasion it happened unbeknown to us when we were leaving to run errands. We came back to a house full of gas and had to ventilate the townhouse. Contacted the KitchenAid customer center and was told there is no fix for this safety issue. Told to “You would have to be careful around them. They are ignoring a serious safety issue! The knobs are too easily turned with only a very very slight push on the knob. This is a severe safety issue as any child or even a pet could turn it on. Several other consumers have reported this issue to saferproducts.gov over the years but apparantly no action has been taken to address it. I welcome a Consumer Safety Commission inspector to visit our home to check it out. Consumer Safety Commission should ask KitchenAid/Whirlpool how many times they have received complaints about this issue.

The product, in the report: Gas Cooktop
The consumer indicates that when one turns the gas cooktop on past its ignition click, it emits gas without actually igniting. The consumer notes that a family member accidentally turned the knob on the unit and they did not realize until they smelled gas. The consumer believes the unit should have a safety shut-off feature that turns the unit off if it does not ignite after a certain time, like the other cooktop he owns.
The consumer contacted the Manufacturer and explained the situation; the representative he spoke with informed him that none of their units have the feature he speaks of.
The consumer states that the unit is used two to three times per day.
The consumer plans on keeping his cooktop for at least the next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.

My KitchenAid Gas Kitchen Range Gas is a serious gas leak hazard! I own a new KitchenAid Gas Kitchen Range 6.25cu 5-burner. Model: KSGB900ESS. There is a very serious issue with the way the gas range knobs are located and engineered. The knobs are round, about 2 1/2” wide and 1 1/4” deep. The way the knobs stick out makes it inevitable that walking by the range will cause them to turn slightly. The detent in the off position does not prevent this movement even with the lightest of brushing by. Here is the issue. That slight movement, even a fraction of an inch, cause the gas to turn on without lighting it. It is not noticed by any sound or haptic feedback so now you have gas leaking into your house. Now the smell will eventually come to your attention but if not or if you leave the house that gas buildup could cause and explosion. I believe this is a serious enough issue that a manufacturer recall/repair is needed.

The product, in the report: gas stove
(11/12/2018) Guests in home accidently brushed against the stove knobs. The consumer woke up the next morning to the smell of gas. But luckily, she was able to turn on the light switch without causing any harm.
The consumer’s concern is that the knobs are being made where you don’t have to push them in to turn them on.
The consumer also stated that she had the same problem with a [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] stove, but will download forms from the Saferproducts.gov web site and file a report.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid Dual Fuel Double Oven Range Model # KFDD500ESS02
We purchased a Kitchenaid dual fuel double oven range in March 2017 - model# KFDD500ESS02. It worked well until June 2018 when the blue enameled oven interiors began to chip and flake. The small upper oven had the chipping issue - large pieces popped off a rounded interior edge while the oven was being used. These pieces weren’t lying in a nice even row when I discovered them. They were scattered throughout the oven floor meaning they could have easily popped into the pie I was baking. This discovery prompted me to check out the lower oven where I found numerous small blue flakes of the enamel interior. The lower oven also has a convection mode, meaning when used those flakes would be blown around the interior by the convection fan and could easily be blown into whatever was baking in that oven. I contacted Kitchenaid and after many phone calls, emails and a certified letter, they finally agreed to swap out the range for a new one (same model). It was delivered in August 2018 and we immediately found many small blue enamel flakes in both ovens. This time Kitchenaid quickly agreed to swap this range out as well for a new one....and the third one had the same issue! We finally gave up on that model and bought a totally different range. What are the odds of us getting three ranges with the same defect? This range should be taken off the market. Kitchenaid kept telling me it was a “cosmetic issue”, but it really is a food safety issue.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid 30” Cooktop
KitchenAid 30” Gas Cooktop, Model KGCC506RBL05, Serial# D65004132 is defective and presents a hazard. In normal use a small amount of water dripped from a removed pot lid fell on the cooktop and then dripped down into the burner switch control assembly, apparently creating a short circuit which caused switched-off burners to attempt to light. Visible sparks at the affected burners were continuous until gas released during the starting process ignited with a prominent detonation. The affected burners are then inoperable. The condition has occurred while the cooktop was in use as well as when the unit was unattended.

I was boiling a pot of water on my KitchenAid gas cooktop. It has a glass surface underneath the burners.
The water had just begun to boil and without any warning, the glass cooktop exploded! It sent thousands of glass pieces across my entire kitchen. The cooktop should not have shattered like it did. No one was hurt. The entire cooktop needs replacing.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid 30” gas on glass cooktop
I was using my 30” Kitchenaid glass gas cooktop with downdraft to make dinner when it exploded. I had 2 burners turned on with pots on them. Went to put a third pot on another burner and when I turned the burner on, the cooktop made a loud boom and exploded. Shattered glass went everywhere. The gas company came out and checked and there were no gas leaks coming into the house. Product is approximately 6 years old...this should not happen whether it’s a day old or 10 years old.

The stove knob bezel was peeling/flaking. It surrounds the stove knob, when you turn the knob, the piece that was flaking was sticking out and cut the finger. The metal covering to the bezel is a very thin metal tape, which would cut your finger like it was a razor blade.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Dual Fuel Downdraft range model KSDG950ESS
We purchased a Kitchenaid downdraft duel fuel range. The burner knobs are located on the front and will release gas when brushed against. Our dog brushed a knob releasing gas into the room. Had we not been home, an explosion would have occurred when the gas came in contact with the fireplace pilot light ten feet way. When Kitchenaid was contacted their solution was to remove the knobs. Not a good long term solution.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Double Oven Gas Range 30” Model KGRS505X. Installed April 2011
I was using the self-clean option on my KitchenAid Double Oven Gas Range (model KGRS505X), which was installed in April 2011. I selected the regular self-clean option, a four hour clean. With about 1.5 hours left on the timer, I was in my basement checking on laundry and noticed debris on the surrounding area. Once I entered the laundry room, saw flames coming through from the ceiling above and realized it was from the oven. I ran upstairs to turn off the self-clean. The fire continued and smoke built up. We used a home extinguisher to contain/put out the flames. With a call to 911, the fire department arrived. The fire was extinguished, the oven was removed from my home, and the oven and surrounding area were inspected by the fire department. It was noted that there was no debris surrounding or under the oven or anything inside to cause the malfunction which resulted in a fire.
We are left with a hole in our kitchen, from where the oven was, that burnt through the floors into our basement. And no stove.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid Model# KCGS550ESS01 Serial # D62317092 5 burner gas cooktop.
I recently purchased a gas cooktop to replace one I had that had a failed switch that allowed gas to flow without the flame being lit. On the NEW cooktop, it is very east to turn on the gas without the flame being ignited. Over 1/2 of the time, if I turn the gas on quickly, the gas flows freely without the flame being lit. If I let the gas flow for a while, and then turn the knob to the off position, it sparks, ignighting the gas that had accumulated around the burner. With this arrangement, it is not that hard to imaging a small child turning on the burner and filing a building with gas, causing a serious explosion.
The cooktop I am replacing has an auto-reignition feature that significantly reduces risk of gas flowing from the burner without the flame being lit. As an engineer who designs electronic equipment, I find it hard to believe that including the auto-reignition feature would add more than $10 per unit produced if it were an every unit item.
The cooktop I recently purchased is KitchenAid Model# KCGS550ESS01 Serial Number D62317092.
Can you explain why, at a minimum, auto-reignition, or a similar safety feature is not required on all gas ranges and cooktops? As far as I am concerned, this is an obvious design defect of this unit.
I will be returning this unit to the store next week. It is too dangerous to keep this appliance in my home.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Gas Range. Model #KGSI901PBS02 It will cost ~$400 for replacement panel, and I believe KitchenAid is aware of the safety issue and won’t pay for replacement.
On my KitchenAid oven, the OFF button would not work. The oven was set for baking, so I turned it down as low as possible while we tried to figure out the problem.
The only way to turn the oven off, was at the main breaker box for the oven.
This was extremely dangerous, and could have been catastrophic if no one knew where the breaker box was.

Kitchen Aid KGRK806PSS00 will not turn off
The problem with the Kitcheaid Switch Membrane is well known by the manufacture but so far they refuse to recall or redesign the part. It is very common for the OFF BUTTON to stop funtioning on both the gas and electric stoves that have this part.
This is a serious safety issue, and Whirlpool / Kitchenaid should come forward and recall the item and replace it with a working one.

The product, in the report: gas range
KitchenAide and most likely Whirlpool gas ranges have a design defect in the control knobs for the burners. My unit was purchased in 2010 and we have had 2 knobs fail. The plastic surrounding the steel boss embrittles and causes it to crack making the knob useless in turning off the burner. My wife was cooking 2 nights ago, the knob failed, and the burner was active for 20 minutes: the time it took me to get home from work. I consider this a fire safety hazard.
I am employed by a large aerospace firm and my job is testing structures, often to failure. I can confidently state this is a design issue.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid 30 in. 6.7 cu. ft. Double Oven Dual Fuel Range with Self-Cleaning Convection Oven in Stainless Steel
Accidentally Turning on Gas
This has happened multiple times, but most recently Saturday August 19th. I got up in the morning and smelled spoiled beef. We had just purchased a side of beef and had repacked it the day before. The trash had not been taken out - so I was not alarmed by the smell. I double checked the freezer temperature and took out the trash. Several hours later I returned to the kitchen and could still smell the beef. I then looked at the stove, and one of the knobs was turned on slightly, no ignition or flames, just enough to emit the gas.
We had gone to bed around 9 pm, and it was afternoon before we discovered what was causing the smell. (16 hours the gas had been on) We opened windows and aired out the kitchen. Nobody was injured.
This isn’t the only time this has occurred, but had assumed an over zealous cleaning of the stove. But now as part of the cleaning routine, the knobs are double checked to be placed in the off position. This has happened at least 4 other times in the past
We did notice that unlike stoves in the past, where you had to push in the knobs rather far, in order to turn on the burner, this stove barely requires any push of the knob to allow the gas to be turned on.
I have spoken with a Kitchen AId company customer service representative - who told me the stove is working as designed. “If you turn the knob, you should get gas” My issue isn’t with the expected function, but how easy it is to accidentally turn on. She said they have no other reports of these accidents.

I do not consider this a long term resolution to this safety issue.
