The product, in the report: Kenmore 27” single wall oven, Model 47784
While baking cookies in the oven at 350 degrees for 12 minutes per cookie sheet, the glass door shattered. This is the third instance when the glass door has either shattered or exploded with the consumer standing nearby. The door had shattered before in 11/2009 and 11/2010, and the door was replaced by Sears. Consumer was told by Sears that they would replace the glass door, not able to replace wall oven. During each of these incidents the oven door handle was loose. This time one side of handle swung loose as the consumer was about to open the oven. Consumer turned off oven, proceeded to open oven when the glass door shattered.
This most recent time, Consumer declined to have repair to the oven glass door as feels it’s unsafe. Sears informed consumer that only repair to the glass door of the wall oven was all they could do and could not give the consumer a new door for this unit.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range
While cooking a lasagna (approx. 20 min in to cooking time), the handle to my Kenmore Oven door fell off on one side. The oven door was too hot to touch, so I did not attempt to fix it at that time. About 10 minutes later, the entire handle fell off the door, followed by the stainless casing and the glass window. The door was hanging down and eventually bent back and hit the floor. I had to have my husband get two sets of pliers to open the remainder of the oven door so that we could get the lasagna out and turn the oven off. It appears that the metal screws that attach the door to the handle melted the threads of the plastic door handle, hence the falling oven door. Thank goodness we weren’t in a cleaning cycle or that I didn’t have my two year old in the kitchen with me.
Truly scary and the most frustrating thing is that Sears customer service repeatedly passed me on to a repair scheduler. I think this is a truly dangerous situation that could have resulted in severe burns or injury.

The product, in the report: electric smooth top range
While baking a cake in the oven at 350 degrees with the timer set for 40 minutes. Twenty minutes into the bake mode she noticed that the cake had caught fire and the setting on the control panel went blank.
She removed the dish from the oven and put the fire out with water. When she attempted to power the oven in the off position it would not power off so she shut off the circuit breaker.
Allowing the range to cool down for a few minutes the circuit breaker was switched on and the oven powered back in the on position on broiler without being switched on. The range was then unplugged from the wall outlet.
The firm was contacted on 12/22/2011 and the consumer was advised that there was no recall involving her model number. She plugged the range back into the wall outlet and the oven powered on in broiler mode again.
She has unplugged the range once again and it is still currently unplugged. She indicated that she fears that the range is a potential fire hazard and she intends on replacing it.

The product, in the report: electric range with metal coils
While pressing the bake button to power the oven in the on position a plastic piece that snapped into the control panel popped out exposing wires and started to spark. She attempted to power the oven and the cook top in the on position but there is no power to the appliance.
The oven was pulled out from the wall and then unplugged from the outlet. The firm was contacted on or around on 12/14/2011 and the consumer was advised that there was no longer a warranty on the appliance and if any repairs were going to be made she will have to pay out of pocket.
No repairs have been made currently to this date and the appliance is still unplugged from the wall outlet. She indicated that there were no injuries but could have possibly been a fire.
The range was purchased by the builder of the home so she does not have that information. She has been in the home for approxiamelty three years.

The product, in the report: smooth top electric range
While pressing the smart simmer button sparks shot out of the control panel near the opening of the switch causing it to trip 200 amp service breaker to house (service breaker on a pole outside of the home).
The firm was contacted on 12/19/2011 and the consumer was advised that there was not a recall involving his model/serial number. The consumer will contact the firm again to schedule a service technician to come out to make repairs.
The consumer was able to gain power to the range bust fears that it poses as a fire/electrical hazard so he unplugged the cord from the wall outlet.
No further information was provided.

The product, in the report: smooth top electric range
When powering the front left and right burner is switched on and at any setting within a few seconds the burners would heat up to higher temperatures without being selected. The circuit breaker has to be pulled or the range has to be unplugged from the wall outlet to power the appliance in the off position.
The firm was contacted in December of 2007 and a service technician was scheduled to come out to the home but he never showed. WHile using the pot ont he front left burner for about 5minutes on a low setting when the temperature changed and caused the pot to burn.
The failure has continued to occur intermittently and the firm was contacted on 12/19/2011 and the consumer was advised that her model number was not included in the recall (see Release #09-333) and that she would be required to pay for a service technician to come out to the home.
The consumer has not made any repairs to the appliance and fears that it could possibly pose as a fire hazard. She indicated that she has smaller children in the home that are able to reach the front burners of the range.
She currently still uses the range with caution.

The product, in the report: smooth top electric range slide in
While powering the oven on to preheat it began to make a noise as if it was short circuiting and there were flames coming from the back of the oven. Smoke began to pouring out from that same area and she used her hand to put the fire out and pressed the stop button to power the oven in the off position.
She lost power to the oven but the light on the control panel indicates that the oven is in use. The firm was contact the same date of the incident and the consumer was offered to have a technician come out to the home but she would be required to pay out of pocket since there was no extended warranty purchased on the range.
The consumer has not made any final decisions and has unplugged the range because she is afraid of it.

While using the front left burner on the medium high setting for approximately five minutes he went to power the unit in the off position and the burner would not power off so the circuit breaker was powered off .
Also while using the oven to bake brownies set at 350 degrees for 5 minutes the oven changed to the broiler setting without being switched. He powered the oven in the off position and it was successful.
He did some research on the internet and came across a recall (Release #09-333) where there were models that experienced some similar hazards .
He contacted the retailer on 11/28/2011 and was advised that his model number was not affected he was offered a service smart agreement . He has not made any final decisions on the service agreement and or any repairs.
He has used the range since the incident occurred with the exception of the front left burner.

No one hurt Made Nov 29, 2011, sent to the company Dec 7, 2011, published by CPSC Dec 21, 2011
The product, in the report: Freestanding Electric Range (stove/oven) 790.94112401
After moving into a new apartment, we went to bake food in the relatively new oven (<5 years) that was installed with the former tenants (whom had no complaints). Upon our first use of the oven as new residents, there were major arcing and pops coming from behind the oven panels and subsequent breaker trip.
After fixing the breaker, we called the apartment’s general maintenance man (not the retailer or manufacturer) and surprisingly, the oven worked fine in his presence. Naturally, when we went to use the oven later that evening, arcing and smoke was again observed, and the breaker tripped.
On the second trip by the apartment’s general maintenance man, we removed the oven’s rear access shield panel and discovered evidence of arcing across the bare metal panel (PN#5304465312) and the broiler element wire blade connector (PN#316203200). We also observed burning of the relay attached to the Electronic Oven Control panel’s circuit board.
During disassembly, we were disturbed to observe absolutely no usage of insulation on any of the high voltage blade connectors on the oven’s wiring harness (PN#1056185) Additionally, we measured in some cases no more than 0.25 inch clearance between most of these high voltage connectors on the wiring harness and the rear shield.
It is our opinion that perhaps during the cleaning of the apartment between tenants the oven was removed and pushed back into the cabinetry, possibly too hard, resulting in contact between the rear shield panel and the broiler element connector on the wiring harness. It was noted that the 220V receptacle was recessed into the wall but the oven plug may have been the main contact point.
I believe that the ability for arcing to occur from this kind of handling is evidence of a significant design flaw present in this model oven. Images of replacement wiring harnesses and rear access cover panels available on the internet show that the use of uninsulated wire connectors or sheet insulation on these panels is common. The problem is compounded with this particular model oven housing design that provides limited clearance between the connectors and the rear access cover panel or the lack of structural support that could prevent flexing of the rear panel. It should be noted that of the many warnings and notices on the handling and installation of this oven, no comments are made to highlight the additional attention and care needed to prevent contact pressure between the wall, plug, and oven rear access shield.

The product, in the report: Free standing electric oven/range. Smooth top surface. Oven door has a full glass panel on the outside and a partial glass panel on the inside of the oven door. Our model also has a warming drawer below the oven.
The outer glass on my oven door exploded and sent glass about 10 ft. in all directions. Thankfully nobody was in the kitchen at the time. Had someone been in the kitchen (especially a small child) they could have been seriously injured or blinded. Even if I have this repaired, I will feel like I have a time bomb in my kitchen. I can see by looking online, that this has been reported hundreds of times on the Kenmore ovens over at least the past 10 years. My oven is just 3 years old. Sears is obviously not addressing the issue. I did talk to them and they did acknowledge that this is a common problem but they said they will / do not have to do anything (including cover repairs costs) until a recall is issued. I have to wonder what the hold up is.

The product, in the report: Electric range
While baking a dish in the oven at 325 degrees within a minute of use the food caught fire and the oven would not power in the off position when it was being switched. The dish was removed from the oven and the fire was put out and the fire department was contacted. The home filled with an electrical burning odor and smoke .
The Webster Fire Department in Webster Massachusetts came out to the home and pulled the range from the wall an unplugged it from the wall unit. They were also able to measure the degrees from the back of the range with a special thermometer and the reading was at 700 degrees.
The Fire Department stayed at the home until the temperature went down and returned to normal. The consumer was advised not to use the range until they could contact the firm for further assistance.
On the same date of the incident when the fire department left the consumer plugged the range back into the wall outlet and without being switched on the oven powered on. He then unplugged the range and left it in that manner.
The firm was also contacted on the same date of the incident and they offered to send out a service technician to take a look at the unit but the consumer declined because he is concerned with the appliance posing as a fire hazard . He has decided that he will replace the range. They couldn’t come to 12/8/11.

The product, in the report: Electric range
This is a quick sketch of what I have been going through with Sears in my attempts to get my stove repaired.
1. Kenmore Stove model 94472 purchased 3-18-09 for $960.49 with an extended warrenty for $249.99 which doesn’t expire until 12-25-14. I also had to pay $19.52 for the electrical connection.
2. First service call from Sears was 11-24-09 as I had noticed that the right front element did not heat well and not evenly. The warmer drawer did not heat consistently. Service tech declared everything ok even though I have continued to have problems with this element.
3. I decided to use the self clean element for the first time on 6-4-11 . I set it for the minimum 3 hours and the stove turned off by itself even though I don’t know how long it actually ran. I didn’t expect problems. ! immediately noticed that the front plastic pane! on the door (where the heat exhaust is) was discolored from white to a light brown. I began checking for other problems and noticed that the cabinet drawers on the right had been damaged from the heat.
4. Called local retailer and talked with owner. He said he would call service center for me as I had not been able to get through. He said he would call me back.
5. No call-back; I called Sears Service on 6-15-11 and was told that they had not been contacted. called assistant manager at retailer; she set up new service call for 6-24-11 ; no one showed up.
6. Another service call set up for 7-1-11 . This service tech said that the cleaning temperatures are very high and that he has seen much worse damage than what I had! He looked at the oven door and said that he couldn’t find anything wrong. He suggested I contact the searshomeservice.com. I did; I never received a reply.
7. I contacted Consumer Reports magazine on 7-3-11 to seek help with this; I read about the CPSC on their website and decided to try that.
8. Another tech arrived on 7 -22-11 ; he said he checked the door seal and the temperature (for about ten minutes); he said everything checked out ok. (He told me that if I wanted to use the self clean, I would just have to pull the stove out into the middle of the room.)
9. On 10-11-11 , I set oven on 250 degrees and put in some frozen egg rolls to thaw and heat slowly. About 15 minutes later, the kitchen alarms and stove alarms went off; the stove would not respond to the off button; finally the stove was pulled out and disconnected from the wall. The food was burned black; I put an oven thermometer inside and it quickly registered over 450 degrees. I didn’t call Sears because their Service has been so slow and completely unhelpful.
10. On Nov.11, 2011, I set the “warm & hold” setting on oven to keep food warm for later. The maximum temperature for this setting is supposed to be 170 degrees. Within minutes, the alarms went off and the stove could not be turned off. Pulled stove out, discounted from the wall, and checked the oven temp. It was over 400 degrees; an error code of F10 was blinking.
11 . Nov. 16, 2011, a representative from CPSC called and took my information about this dangerous situation which I cannot seem to resolve with Sears.
12. Sears sent another service tech on 11-18-11, he asked if any of the other techs had checked the main control panel; I said “no”. He said he was amazed they had not because that has been the problem all along. He ordered a new control computer and told me It would be about two-three weeks before it would arrive. I asked him if this was the cause of the top elements being so hard to regulate and he said “yes” because this is the master control and controls everything and that it was the cause of the oven overheating.
13. About four days after the last tech visit on 11-18-11; I received the control panel at my home! guess that means I’m supposed to install it although I know nothing about such things. The control panel is marked “remanufactured” which I plan to refuse. I paid for a new stove and I deserve a new stove. (Actually, I would rather have my money back because I will never get over being afraid of this stove.) The stove still looks brand new; I’ve taken very good care of it but Sears is not even trying to resolve this properly. This has always been a defective stove and it is dangerous. I intend to fight this as long as it takes. Your assistance is deeply appreciated.

The product, in the report: Standard size electric oven and glass toped 4 burner range.
Right front electric burner, on a glass top, sears kenmore oven and range, operates independently. It will change temperature settings, turn on the power, when off, and not respond to off, on the dial. It is a serious safety problem. This has been happening for a few months, to a lesser degree..., now it will not turn off without unpluging the range.

After being away from the home for 5 hours and there was a burning odor in the home. The hot surface button was illuminated on the control panel indicating that all four burner were in use and the heating element was glowing red in the oven.
There was a spice container sitting on the control panel that was made out of plastic that melted. He attempted to open the door but it was hot to the touch. The range was not powered in the on position by the control panel so he had to power the circuit breaker in the off position.
He powered the circuit breaker back into the on position and the oven powered back in the position without being switched on. The circuit breaker was powered in the off position.
In fear that the range could potentially pose as a fire hazard he unplugged the range from the wall outlet and placed it outside the home in front of the garage door.
He contacted the retailer on 11/2/2011 and the representative that he spoke with (name was not provided) advised the consumer that there was no recall involving the model number/serial number. He has decided to not get it repaired and to just replace it.

On 10/30/2011 while baking a pizza in the oven at 400 degrees for approximately 15 minutes when he noticed a burning odor coming from the oven . He made an attempt to power the oven in the off position with the control panel and it would not power off which also caused the pizza to burn up. The circuit breaker was then pulled to cease power to the unit.
The heating elemnet began to grow bright red when the failure occured and the temperature heated to another temperature that was not selected.
On 10/31/2011 after powering the circuit breaker in the on position and placing the oven in the on position at 350 degrees they noticed the heating element was glowing bright red.
When making attempts to power the oven in the off position it would not power off and the circuit breaker was pulled again to cease power to the oven. No repairs have been made to the unit and the circuit breaker is still currently pulled to prevent any power to the range.
Because consumer has to keep the breaker off she can’t use the stove either/ If the breaker is on the oven heats automatically to extreme temps and cannot be turned off.

When the front left burner was powered in the on position on the lowest setting she noticed that it would heat up to another temperature than selected. The burner would not power in the off position when being switched so the circuit breaker had to be powered off. A technician came out on 9/25/11.
August 26 of 2011 while using the front left burner on a low setting and the temperature changed to a higher temperature than select and caught fire to the food that was being cooked on the cook top.
She attempted to use water to put the fire out but since it was a oil fire and most of the oil was gone the flames went died out by themselves. The burner was powered in the off position.
Her husband is a volunteer fire fighter so he contacted The former Fire chief whom bought out a fan to suction the smoke out. They noticed that element was still powered in the on position but the control knob was positioned to off so the circuit breaker was then pulled.
The hood above the stove was melted and the cabinets beside the range were burned.
The retailer was contacted and, on 9/13/2011, and 9/26/2011 two different technicians came out to the home and the one on 9/13 reported to the retailer that the range should be replaced.
Pictures of the damages were taken by the technician on 9/26/2011 and provided to the retailer. She has also spoke with the insurance company in regards to the damages that were caused by the fire.
She spoke with a representative at the retailer on 10/13/2011 who advised the consumer that that they were only offering to repair the appliance and not replace. The representative also checked for a recall since she experienced two of the same hazards in Release #09-333 but her appliance was not included within the recall, or the recall done by Electrolux on Oct. 21, 2010, Release #11-016.
She then contacted the firm on 10/13/2011 and they were not willing to offer assistance with the stove and she has not used the appliance since the incident in August of 2011. The circuit breaker is currently powered in the off position to prevent any future hazards with the range.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore smoothtop electic stove/oven.
Left front electric range top burner will not shut off. Burner stays on high no matter what the control knob is set at. Initially I could fidget with the knob to get it to turn off. The last time it stayed on high for about 10 minutes with the knob in the off position. At that point, a good wack on the knob finally shut it off. After reading many similar complaints for this condition, (in addition to stoves turning on by themselves), I unplugged it all together. I am frustrated to hear that my stove does not fall under the recall, although it has the same problem as those listed.

The left and right front burner spontaneously go to high while using the burners (amount of time using the burners vary) on the lowest settings without being switched. After powering the burners in the off position they continue to heat up.
The circuit breaker is then powered in the off position and powered back in the on position within five minutes and both burners power back on without being switched on and are on the highest setting.
The consumer states that he usually make sure the burners are powered in the off position and while the burner is still heating up he powers the breaker in the off position waits for the burner to cool down for 10 minutes before powering the circuit breaker back into the on position and both burners would be powered off.

The representative (name was not provided) advised the consumer that his model number was not included in the recall but that they would like to schedule a technician to come out to the home to take a look at the range.
The consumer has not scheduled a date and time for the repairman to come out but indicated that he plans on doing so.

The consumer recalls using the back left burner earlier (approximately 5 pm) in the day time to prepare a meal and approximately 8 pm while cleaning the range she noticed that the burn was on but was not powered in position by using the control knobs and that the knob was powered in the off position.
The service light on the control panel indicated that the element was In the on position. The consumer turned the knob from the on position to the off position simultaneously and the burner powered off.
On 8/31/2011 while using the front left burner on setting number four for 15 minutes the back left burner powered in the on position without being switched on. After trying to us the knob to switch back and forth from on and off to power the burner in the off position did not work the range was pulled from the wall and unplugged.
After allowing the range to cool off the range was plugged back into the wall and the back left burner powered in the on position again without being switched on.
The firm was contacted on 9/1/2011 and the consumer indicated that they were not willing to offer any assistance in repairing it. So the consumer is considering either hiring a third party company to take a look at the range and or replacing the appliance.
The consumer did some research online and noticed there was a recall for similar models (see release #09-333) that experienced the same hazard but she was already informed by the firm that her model number was not affected.
The range is currently unplugged from the wall outlet and has not been used.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Smoothtop Range.
The Left front burner on our Sears Kenmore smoothtop stove will not shut off when the knob is turned off. We have ruined several pans and filled the kitchen with smoke on numerous occasions. We checked the recall list and our range is not covered by the current recall. Our Model # is 790.96122409. The Serial Number # is VF70245244. The latest date this occurred was today, although is has been happening for about six months, but is getting worse. I think maybe it is a bad design, the steam from the oven is vented into the control knobs for the burners. The burner will also not turn down when the knob is turned to a lower setting.

The product, in the report: Electric smooth top range
While baking a dish inside of the oven on 350 degrees for approximately an hour the consumer noticed smoke pouring from inside of the oven and the food baking inside had caught fire. He attempted to power the oven in the off position but it would not power off and that was when he noticed that the setting had switched to broil without him changing it.
He then used a hand towel to put the fire out. The circuit breaker was then powered in the off position to power the range in the off position. He waited approximately ten minutes and powered the circuit breaker back into the on position and noticed that the oven also powered back into the on position on the broil setting without being switched on.
The firm was contacted on the same date of the incident and a service technician was scheduled to come out to the consumer’s home on 8/4/2011. On 8/4/2011 a service technician came out to the home and indicated that the control modular needed to be replace and the consumer was provided with the price for the labor and parts.
While the service technician was there the consumer contacted the firm again in reference to the price that he was going to be charged for the repairs. The representative that the consumer spoke with (name is unknown) advised the consumer that his appliance did not fall under any recalls and he would be required to pay out of pocket.
The consumer declined on having the appliance required and has unplugged the range from the wall outlet and has not used it since the date of the failure. He did not indicate if he would make any repairs on the unit and or replace it.

The product, in the report: Electric Range
Caller purchased electric built in stove and broiler range in June 2008 and had no problems with it until around April 2011 when his wife would finish cooking, turn the stove off and while the family would be eating dinner or whichever meal had been cooked, they would hear the fans still running.
They checked stove, found the oven back on and he thought at the beginning that his wife had possibly forgotten to turn it off.
Around the end of June 2011 when the oven didn’t turn off and caller had difficulty turning it back off and had to turn it off, on then off and one a few times before he could turn it off.
The third time this happened that the oven was turned off after use but then turned back on again the caller could not get it to turn off no matter what he did. He tried turning on and off but then had to flip the breaker to stop power to the built in stove.
Caller’s have had to keep the breaker turned off for fear of fire. They don’t believe that the oven is turning itself back on but do believe that the oven just isn’t actually turning off when user turns it off.

The product, in the report: smooth top electric range
While The oven was powered in the on position for ten minutes at 350 degrees to bake a dish he noticed that the heating element was glowing red and the control panel displayed a F1 code.
He attempted to power the oven in the off position by the control panel but it would not power in the off position so the range was pulled from the wall and unplugged for the wall outlet.
Later that evening (7/1/2011) he plugged the plug back into the wall outlet and the range/oven appeared to be fine.
On 7/7/2011 he contacted the firm (name of representative that he spoke with is unknown) and was advised that his model number was not involved in a recall
While doing some research on the internet he noticed that the F! code meant that the temperature control went out and noticed that other consumers experienced similar failures with similar ranges.
He indicated that if he wasn’t home and left the oven

The product, in the report: Electric coil range
The range is located in a vacation home and she estimates using it at least once a month .Shortly after purchasing the oven she discovered that the oven was overheating. On several occasions she recalls burning several dishes that were prepared in the oven. No matter the temperature the food is paced on, the setting and the amount of time the food is placed in the oven the bottom of the food still burns She contacted the firm in 2007 (exact date and month are unknown and a service technician came out to the home. No repairs were made because the temperature in the oven was perfectly fine.
She did research on the internet and noticed that other consumers were experiencing the same hazard and some resulted in fires. She decided not to contact the firm any longer to make any repairs since she would charged fee. The range is still currently being used but she uses it with caution.

No one hurt Made May 31, 2011, published by CPSC Jun 21, 2011
The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Elite Smoothtop Range.
I have a Sears Kenmore Elite Smoothtop Range
Model # 790.99129405 Serial # VF53136862
I was using the stovetop this weekend and it was cooking at a very high temperature regardless of what the setting on the control was changed to, Low or High or anything in between.
When attempting to shut the unit off, the control goes blank as if the unit is turned off, however the burner stays on and seems to be on the highest heat setting possible. If you unplug the unit and plug it back in the burner turns on immediately again and there seems to be no way to shut it off.
I found a recall of a range almost identical to this one and coincidentally the Serial # of my included in the serial number range of (Serial Number Range VF122xxxxx - VF831xxxxx) which seems to be more than a concidence.
Here is a link to the recall I found. The units in this recall seem to be exactly like mine even the picture is the same except that mine has push buttons for temperature control instead of knobs.
http://www.cpsc.gov/CPSCPUB/PREREL/prhtml09/09333org.html
I’m sure the problem that cause this recall is exactly the same as mine. I called Sears and Fridigaire and all I got was a run-around that my model number was not included in the recall...
I called 10 different phone numbers trying to find someone to listen to me and expand the recall because this is a serious fire hazard and could cause serious injury or even death.
