No one hurt Made Sep 1, 2020, sent to the company Nov 18, 2020, published by CPSC Dec 3, 2020
The product, in the report: Sears Electric Wall oven Manufacturer/importer/private labeler: Sears Kenmore Elite 27” single wall oven Date manufactured: Dec 2012
7/19/2020: The consumer filed a report with the CPSC, on an electric wall oven.
The consumer received 2 replacement oven wire racks. The consumer installed the oven racks, but the exact same problem was present.
When food is cooked in the oven, one side of the oven rack, falls down on the next rack. The consumer was cooking food in a roasting pot and some of the gravy spilled out as a result of this issue and landed on the bottom of the oven. Therefore, the remedy of providing a replacement rack, does not address the problem.
NOTE: The racks that come with the oven are porcelainized. However, the replacement racks are made of chrome or stainless steel.
The consumer’s opinion: When the oven heats up, the oven walls bend out (bow out), just enough for the oven rack to fall down.
8/25/2020: The consumer called the firm to share the latest information, but after holding on for 15 minutes, he hung up.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore White 30” Electric Slide in Range
I have a Kenmore Electric Range Model #790.42531310. Purchased from Sears Store in September 2014. The oven racks no longer fit in the oven. They will not stay within the grooves and fall to the bottom of the oven. Therefore, it is unsafe to use the oven. In my opinion this is an oven defect and a fire hazard. There is an issue with either the interior oven or the racks, but more than likely it’s the interior oven.
On Friday, August 21, 2020 I had the Sears Service Repairman inspect the oven. He literally shook his head and had no explanation. Furthermore, there is nothing he could fix. The insert of the oven is not removable or replaceable. He said there was no recall that he could see in his technical support material.
I have made several calls to Sears Customer Service, Customer Care, Parts Department and Technical Specialist. No one can give me an answer - especially since the stove is out of warranty and I do not have an extended warranty plan.

The product, in the report: product is home induction stove - Kenmore Elite. Left-rear burner comes on spontaneously presenting high risk of danger. Sears home services has attempted to fix several times with no luck .
We have an induction stove from sears. Although it is under warranty it presents an ongoing safety hazard as sears home services has not been able to correct:
When we use the left-front burner, the left rear burner will spontaneously come on, even though the switch is in the OFF position- sears cannot figure this out. This has happened countless times and we worry that if other consumers do not know about this problem, they could conceivably burn their house down. We also have the left-rear burner come on spontaneously with all stove controls in the OFF position. If metal pans are on/near the burner they will heat to near melting. This has been going on for a year now and sears still can’t fix, in spite of replacing numerous parts

The product, in the report: It is a slide in full sized kitchen stove , black and stainless steel colored
The temperature controls will not shut off on our Kenmore Elite Stove. One of the burner we haven’t used for a couple of years due to that happening and another is now malfunctioning intermittently. We have had to unplug the stove to shut the burner off. As a result, we never use one of the burners. The control dials are on the front of the stove and if a child would turn it on, it could result in the stove being on high for periods of time we would be unaware of.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Electric range model 790.93013313 a 4.9 cu ft range purchased late March 2017
We purchased a Kenmore electric stove/oven March 2017 (model 790.93013) and last night we were 10 minutes into a turkey getting braised when a spark appeared to come from the stove and the breaker tripped. I looked it over for obvious signs and with observers turned on the breaker again. After about 20 seconds a significant spark, almost a flame, jumped out of the upper left of the control panel and again fliped the breaker. It is out of 1 year warranty but obviously a significant concern especially if the breaker had not done it’s job.

The product, in the report: Model 790.9802.3800
My Sears Kenmore Elite Electric Range 790.9802.3800 is malfunctioning. I have twice tried to use the back right burner, however, when I turn it off it doesn’t turn off. It will go on and off without reason. In looking on line I see that there are many others with a similar issue. I am now afraid to use my stove for fear it will start a fire.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Range model #790.94469700 S/N# VF 80825523 Control Micro Center made by Electrolux # ES585 # 31646804 Power Relay Board on this unit has safety issues and missing micro processor control safety features to stop an F10 runaway and/or lock the oven door to prevent harm or death. Power Relay Board on Electrolux controller is # ES52X_36X and 3164627??. Burned contacts and board prevent recognition of complete part numbers. Relays can and will weld on this 230VAC1Ph, Single Make/ Break control logic with No Redundant or back up stop mechanism. I have explained it all on the attached.
F10-Error Total Uncontrolled Thermal Runaway of range oven when power relays weld on power relay circuit board. Board burns, contact become loose , copper foil melts & becomes unattached. Meanwhile temperature soars to harmful dangerous levels that could seriously harm or kill a person. Why? Micro control processor does not lock the oven door in an F10 Runaway condition. Also there is NO back up or redundant safety cutout with a consealed manual rest for the technician when the condition occurs! THE ONLY SAFE WAY TO STOP THE RUNAWAY AND KEEP YOUR HOME FROM BURNING DOWN IS TO TURN OFF THE MAIN UPSTREAM BREAKER!!!

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore model 790-9280 Electric Range
on 9/20/1917 I was baking a cake in my sears kenmore model 970 oven. regular oven not convection mode, at 375 degrees for 30 mins.. as i was finishing the clean-up of mixing bowls etc at the sink ,which is to the left of the stove at a right angle thereof, on my right side approx 2 ft from the oven door when there was a loud BOOM explosion behind me. Needless to say.. i was totally startled and when turning around, found the front glass portion of the oven door had blown out. Immediately turned off the stove, cleaned up the multitude of safety glass bits and pieces and contacted Sears on the web site. Talked to the voice help person that assured they would take care of me, gave me a number for a repairman that came out on 9/22/17.. Needless to say...they took care of me all right. To the tune of $247.54 to REPAIR the door after the parts get here in ‘about 45 days’, and ‘dont use the oven’.....After reading all the common complaints regarding this exact situation on GOOGLE.. I cant believe there is no recall of this product over this exact same thing happening to consumers over and over hundreds of time.. im surprised someone hasnt been seriously injured due to this and Sears is so nonchalant about it. Is there any recourse for me to recover this cost for the repair. And what is to guarantee it not happening again? Thank you for your attention to this.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Electric Range Super Capacity with Ultrabake System
While using the Delay Start Feature on the Oven to cook a turkey breast in a cooking bag, the oven broiler came on and could not be shut off. This caused the turkey breast/bag to catch fire. The only way to shut off the broiler was to unplug the oven/shut off the power. This was very dangerous as this started the food inside the oven on fire with the intense heat inside the oven. Fortunately, the fire/smoke alarm went off so we were alerted to the problem to prevent a catastrophic disaster.

The product, in the report: A white Sears Kenmore electric range.SKU # 29702295012074999052999 (from back of range). We purchased it at a Sears scratch n Dent store in Northboro, MA
I was using the oven only of my Kenmore electric range. Within 5 minutes of cooking the control panel began sputtering sparks out and then small flames began coming out of the front of the control panel. I pressed the OFF button but the sparks and small flames continued. It was so scary I called 911 and left the house. From what I’ve read online this has occurred many times before with Sears Kenmore electric ranges. It appears they should initiate a recall and warn consumers before people get seriously hurt!

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite 790 Double Electric Built-in Oven Model 790.48193000
The oven racks fall with any amount of weight. It first happened with a roast turkey. The juice in the roaster splashed up and burned my arm. It next happened with a pan of lasagne and yesterday the rack fell with a Dutch oven roast I cooked the roast with one side of the rack resting on the oven floor
The oven is a Kenmore Elite model 790. Manufactured in Canada March 2011.
This issue with the racks began in the past year. Apparently the oven walls have expanded from the heat, is my guess.
There is another issue with the oven. During the oven cleaning cycle, about midway through, the heat sensor turns off the oven. This first happened during the warranty period and the repairman showed us how to remove the panel and reset the oven switch. I’m wishing now that I would have returned the oven then.

Hurt, care not known Made Apr 20, 2017, sent to the company Jun 2, 2017, published by CPSC Jun 16, 2017
The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Elite dual electric convection wall oven
Purchased Sears Kenmore dual electric convection oven 11/15: Model # 790.48443410 Serial# AF54001251 and used both upper and lower ovens (though rarely because also resided in another location half time) without issue. On 3/26/17 I used the lower oven to cook a casserole. I removed the dish and closed the oven door. About 30 minutes later I heard a sound and turned to see the left side of oven door handle was dislodged and hanging down. There had not been any door handle loosening issues noted previously. As I was walking towards oven to investigate there was a LOUD “pop” and the entire outer glass panel exploded into fragments that shot out all over the kitchen (including into my prepared food) and husband cut his foot on one of the fragments! I am always very careful and gentle with my electronics, appliances and equipment so was VERY disappointed that Sears blames the consumer instead of replacing the glass panel at their expense. The screw that hols the handle in is quite short and only 3 threads actually hold into the handle. The glass part shouldn’t even be included in the far upper and lower parts of the exterior door because this design flaw makes the glass too vulnerable to stress fracture. As soon as the handle dislodges the glass panel must flex with the lack of total support and it fractures. Really unacceptable and unsafe to have glass explosion in your kitchen with kids, pets and all others in the area. I would like to see this item recalled because of this unsafe the design flaw. Sears sold me 4 new bolts for over $25 “that have been changed” and they don’t even work for the left side of the handle because the washer is too wide and the interior of oven has a raised area that disallows washer from sitting flush.

The product, in the report: White Sears Kenmore Elite Electric Range purchased in July 2005
Our Kenmore kitchen range that we purchased in 2005 first would not turn off the large burner on Saturday morning March 25, 2017. We had to cut the power to the range at the circuit breaker to have it turn off. The burner was not used after that. Sometime after 11:30 pm on Sunday, March 26 and prior to 2:30 am on March 27, the burner turned itself on again and would not shut off. We had turned the circuit breaker back on so that we could cook in the interim of the events. Fortunately, my husband, who had fallen asleep while reading awoke and found the burner turned on and again shut the circuit breaker to the stove.

The product, in the report: Electric range
Used my oven to warm up some bread, turned it off, but the oven stayed hot even though the displayed showed it was off. Then the oven continued to heat up to the highest temperature, around 500 degrees and would not turn off. I turned it back on and then back off, but it still stayed at hottest temperature. I had to go the basement to turn off the circuit breaker, because the oven was too hot to move to pull the plug. If I had gone out of the house after using the oven, I assume my house would have burned down by the time I got home. There should be an overheating switch that automatically shuts off the power. Doing a quick search on the Internet, there are several reports of the same model not turning off, so clearly there is a problem.

Last night my Kenmore stove spontaneously exploded spewing shards of glass all over my kitchen. The stove was not in use. My 7 year old son was sitting at the kitchen table which luckily was far enough away to avoid any injury.
I spent an hour on the phone with someone from Sears. The product has not be put on a recall list. And because I’m outside the 4 year warranty period, they will not replace or repair the stove.
I can’t believe this product hasn’t been recalled given that this is not an isolated event and is completely dangerous. Can you please look into this? I don’t care about the money to replace it. I just want them to stand by their product and do the right thing!

The product, in the report: A Sears Kenmore Electric Stove with a pull down oven door composed of two layers of glass of which the outer layer is the one that shattered.
I am writing this letter to report a dangerous flaw that potentially could injure someone. We have a Kenmore stove (Model 790.9743,9744 ) that we purchased on November 3, 2009 at a Sears store in Salina, Kansas. On Sunday (Feb. 7. 2016) afternoon the oven was off and was cooling after my wife baked some rolls. Suddenly the front glass on the oven door shattered scattering many pieces of glass onto the floor. Since the glass is tempered safety glass, the bits of glass were mostly small but flew up to 5 feet. If a small child or animal happened to be standing nearby, possible injuries could have occurred. This is not a rare event as we at first thought until we looked on the internet. We discovered this event, while not common, does occur quite often. As far as we could determine we did nothing unusual to the door (reports from others were similar) that could have caused the breakage. While Kenmore is the brand we have, other brands were named by internet reports. Those of us who reported the shattered glass on Kenmore stove oven doors to Sears brought no offer to repair the stove or pay for a replacement part. Most of the folks (including me) who called Sears got similar responses such as the warranty has run out and our stoves and parts are made by various manufacturers. I am not so concerned about the repair cost even though Sears would be better served standing behind their products when a safety issue occurs. Someone could really be injured.

Product is a Kenmore Elite electric oven, the oven racks fall when hot and cause hot food to spill causing burns to consumer. Has happened multiple times during use, ncluding several times during the holidays of 2015 Thanksgiving and Christmas. After googling this problem I see it is a prevalent problem with Sears Kenmore ovens and that there has been no recall. Defect is the oven walls expand and suddenly racks fall with hot foods on them, especially when pulling out the racks while the oven is in use.

The product, in the report: This is a ceramic Sears/Kenmore Stove with five heating elements on the top.
Discovered this week that our Kenmore Stove/Oven Ceramic top element will not turn off. The only way we could get it to turn off was to unplug from the wall. I am on SSDI and require a special diet so I need to have a stove that actually functions correctly. The only way around this problem is to plug it in and unplug it after each use, requiring moving it in and out of the space and unsure if it is even safe and could potentially cause a fire. Discovered last night when we were going to bed and discovered the stove top element was still red hot in spite of it being turned off hours ago. Help! Suggestions Please!
I live in a condominium/townhome and have seven families living in our building so I cannot risk using this appliance. I was told there was no fix for this and to report it to the government.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Elite Electric Range Model 79097472802, white
One of the heating elements on our Kenmore Elite Electric Range (model 79097472802) turned on spontaneously and heated to a glowing red, showing a high level of heat. We tried to turn the element off but the on/off button was not working. Eventually the only thing that would turn the stove off was unplugging it. This happened on Sept. 27 2015 while we were roasting food in the oven. Just before the element kicked on and heated up (within about a minute), we heard an odd grinding-like noise coming from the stove.
We bought this stove Jan. 6 2010 from Sears. We’ve had to have it fixed several times; the problems always seeming to revolve around the electronics. We have continued to update the warranty, however Sears has sent a contracting company out twice to address this latest incident and still can’t fix the stove. The second technician came today (Oct. 12 2015) to replace the stove circuit board, aka the control board. While here he noticed that several wires that are part of the wiring harness are burnt. He is going back to his office to see about replacing the wiring harness. In the mean time I contacted Sears at their product complaint section about this and received complaint case # [REDACTED].
My point is that it may be worth the CPSC’s time to investigate a 5-year old stove that turns on spontaneously and gets hot to enough to be an obvious fire hazard, and which won’t turn off unless unplugged. Is there any way that you can help my family with this? I would appreciate your help.

The product, in the report: Kitchen 30 inch wide Kenmore electric stove.
I have a Kenmore electric stove, Model 79092902010. It’s about 5 years old (young). Last night while baking chicken at 350 f temp, the glass on the oven door spontaneously exploded and shattered all over the kitchen. Thankfully, no one was near it. It have not been hit or slammed, ever. There was a loud, explosive noise as glass spewed all over the place. My brother, when called, said somehow pressure must have built up inside the door. I have never heard of this, and strongly feel that there was a defect that finally resulted in this situation. I have pictures, but was unable to paste them to this box. I have been calling Kenmore for two days and am getting nowhere. Because the warranty has run out, no one will help me. I think when you see the picture, you will see it’s not from a hit or slam; the entire glass area blew out all over the place. No hanging glass or holes or cracks. This was a very dangerous situation. I’ve spoken to all kinds of customer service folks, managers and parts people to no avail. I cannot use the oven, given its condition. Also, given my concern with what could have caused this, I don’t want this damaged unit in my home. I will be looking for another stove, and another brand, given the lack of concern that Kenmore has. However, I feel they should look into this for the safety of others. I also feel they should compensate me given the danger that this posed, expensive stoves are suppose to last a lot longer than 5 years, and this was not due to anything I did. Also, dealing with them has been a nightmare. I have attached the pictures. I also want to be sure that other Kenmore owners do not have this happen to them. If we had been near the stove we both would have been covered in glass, (eyes, face, body). I’m still attempting to vacuum it all, as little specs are all over the place.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore model # 790.96010407 S/n VF74366393 Smooth top Range
In 2007 I bought 2 Kenmore Electric Ranges & a refrigerator. We put one range & the refrigerator in a house we were selling. We put the Kenmore 790.96010407 in our home. We didn’t use it much and of course, after the warranty was up the range would not turn off. It would stay on high and I would have to pull the range out & unplug it. I called the company & said that model was not on the recall. Seems funny that was the same problem that the other ranges were recalled for. We did not have the money to have a repairman come out & fix it as the repairman was not sure how much it would cost, but the service call was $100.00. The range would most of the time turn off, but it would take spurts and not turn off. On October 22, 2013 my granddaughter was in the kitchen with me. I had turned the range off, but it did not go off. She hit her hand on the range & burned it pretty bad. Now I keep her out of the kitchen completely when she’s here. Now the range is not turning off again. I am going to purchase another range, but it will definitely not be a KENMORE!!! Please let me know if you have had any other complains of this nature on his model. Thanks.. [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: SEARS KENMORE Model 790.46769901 electric slide-in range/oven, black
I have a Kenmore model 790 drop-in electric range. The complete model number is 790.46769901. This morning at 11:00 am, my wife, daughters and I were in the kitchen. Suddenly the entire outer oven door glass exploded outward without warning. The majority of the broken glass landed within the two foot radius in front of the oven. Some small pieces of glass flew as far as eight feet, and onto the four of us. Nobody was injured, other than a couple of small cuts on my feet.
The rangetop and oven were both last used approximately fourteen hours prior to the incident. The oven is clean and well-maintained, and nobody in the home can recall any sort of impact against the door.
While researching a replacement part for the range, I found many complaints about exploding outer door glass with the Kenmore model 790 stove.

The product, in the report: Kenmore 30’ electric, smooth top, slide in range oven. It has a warming drawer on the bottom and a warming burner in the back center of the cook top. It is Stainless Steel and has black plastic handles on the oven door and warming drawer door.
My Sears Kenmore electric slide-in oven, model number starts with 790, has had the door handle fall off on MANY occasions. This alway happens when the oven is hot and I have food cooking inside.
This has happened approximately 7-8 times and has varied in which side comes off. I have heard the glass slide down, and was amazed it has not broken.
This is very scary when it happens and extremely unsafe. I have burned myself trying to get the door handle back on the hot oven door, so I can finish cooking. Happened once cooking for Thanksgiving!
In fact, I have started keeping a screwdriver in my knife block so it is handy. NOT GOOD. Actually the screws are pretty stripped now and am not sure I can fix it next time.
I went online to find the size of the screws to see if I could replace them with longer ones, started reading of doors exploding on the same models and am now concerned to use this oven at all!
Why in God’s name has this product not been recalled? It is obvious after this many years of complaints that Sears is NOT going to do the right thing.
Thank you,

The product, in the report: Model # 79098023800 KENMORE ELITE Free Standing, Electric Range
I have a Model # 79098023800 KENMORE ELITE Free Standing, Electric Range that I am having a problem with the wire shelves falling out. The walls of the lower oven seem to expand allowing the shelves to no longer fit tightly in the compartment and fall down at an angle. This spills the food from the container all over the oven floor and causes the liquid to potentially catch fire. I find this to be very unsafe for my wife and I to use.

Today, the front left burner on our Sears Kenmore range switched to the hottest setting and failed to turn off. We had to unplug the power.
Upon researching the problem, I discovered that this is a common problem and there are reports of burners spontaneously turning themselves on thus creating a serious fire hazard.
The model number is 790 (specifically 790.96113409). Sears had a recall but didn’t include this specific model (even though the symptoms are similar).

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore slide in electric oven
My husband was cooking a pizza in our Kenmore oven. He opened the glass oven door by the handle to check on the pizza. The handle screw came out on one side, causing one end of the handle to come off the door (we had no warning that the handle was loose or faulty). The outer glass door exploded onto the kitchen floor, across the kitchen, over a kitchen counter and into the breakfast area. Glass pieces could have embedded into our grandchildren’s eyes, had they been there.
I contacted Sears / Kenmore and Frigidaire, who is listed as the manufacturer on the Model number. Frigidaire told me to contact Kenmore, stating it was their product. Sears /Kenmore said they would register my report, forwarded me to a claims department to report the incident, and also stated they could send a Sears repairman at our expense.
I also spoke about this incident to several people in my community and learned that another person had her Kenmore oven door do the same thing while she was out of her home (the oven was not on). I am requesting that someone look into “tempered” glass oven door shattering / exploding.

The product, in the report: Stainless Steel - Kenmore glasstop electric range/oven (Model: 790.928030310, SN: VF02465189) that I bought from Sears at Collin Creek Mall in Plano, Texas on Feb 8, 2014.
On Easter Sunday, April 5th I was cooking a casserole in my Kenmore glasstop electric range/oven (Model: 790.928030310, SN: VF02465189) that I bought from Sears at Collin Creek Mall in Plano, TX on Feb 8, 2014. As I put my hand on the handle to open the door to get my casserole out, the outside glass literally exploded. There was a very loud POP then it shot glass all over my legs/feet. The oven had been on 375 degrees for 45 minutes.
I have had no previous problems until this one. I can only the damage it would’ve caused to my eyes/face had I been crouched down in front of it, looking through the glass watching my casserole brown, like I usually do. My kids help me cook all the time too so it scares me to think about what would’ve happened to them had they been standing in front of it helping me. I wont even use it now because I have NO idea why it happened and I don’t trust it any more. Futhermore, there were 3 other adults and 2 children in the house who are witnesses to this event.
Monday morning I called/twittered Sears. Their “computers were down” so they told me someone would call me to schedule an appointment. They didn’t. The Twitter response told me to call the “recall hotline”. I called customer service back this evening and they told me it was out of warranty (...of course it is) and that I would have to pay $100 for them to come look at it and I would have to pay for the glass to be replaced but they couldn’t even give me a cost. (I will NOT pay to have it replaced - warranty or not. I didn’t break it.) It is defective and highly dangerous and I want a recall issued on it immediately. Nobody else should have to go through this. I also called the Sears “recall” hotline and they said it wasn’t under recall and that I had to work with Kenmore now and they washed their hands completely of the entire situation and said “Sorry we can’t help.”
I called/twitted Kenmore and am waiting on a response. In the meantime I want to report this product as it is very dangerous and the results could have been disastrous. And the company who sold it to me couldn’t care less.

The consumer would like to file a report on his electric range because he feels it poses both a fire and safety hazard.
10/23/2014 The consumer indicates that a few minutes after his wife had turned the oven on to preheat, the circuit board situated on the back of the range caught fire and flames shot up as much as one foot high above the range. Immediately before the fire, the consumer states that there was a distinct smell of rubber. The consumer was able to unplug the range and the fire ceased thereafter. He reports that the fire lasted an approximate twenty seconds.
10/24/2014 The consumer contacted the retailer and explained to a representative the situation that had occurred. The consumer was advised the unit is out of warranty, the representative informed the consumer that there was nothing they could do. The consumer was also informed that if he wanted a technician to inspect his unit, he would have to pay for the service out of pocket.
The consumer states that this is the first time him and his wife have had any incidents with their electric range. He indicates that the oven is used approximately two to three times a week while the top burners are used on a daily basis. The electric range has not been used since the fire incident. The unit has not been inspected by a technician.
The consumer has no injuries to report.

The consumer states that on 7/26/14 he woke up around 6am and saw that the unit’s left front burner was on high heat level but the switch was off. He states the control keyboard was on child lock setting. The consumer tried to turn the unit off using the electronic control keyboard. The unit does not have knobs or a switch; it is controlled by the electronic keyboard. The consumer turned off the circuit breaker and waited a few minutes. When he turned the circuit breaker back on the left burner would automatically turn on. The consumer states he turned the circuit breaker off and back on about 6 times during the next few days and the left burner automatically turned on each time.
The consumer states he has not used the unit again.
The consumer used the stove the day before (7/25/14) and he states it was working fine.
The consumer states the unit received repairs in 2010 and 2011. The unit’s right front burner and control keyboard were replaced both times because the unit had the same problem of spontaneously turning on but would not shut off unless the circuit breaker was turned off. The consumer states the technician who conducted the repair in 2011 advised him that he should not have this problem again. Both repairs were covered by the consumers extended warranty.
The consumer contacted the firm on 7/28/14 (case# [REDACTED]) the firm advised him the unit was not on recall and he would have to pay for any repairs. The consumer did not want to repair the unit because he has had the same problem and the unit repaired on 2 occasions. The consumer wanted a different unit and was offered a 10% discount on a new unit.
The consumer feels that the unit poses a fire hazard and should be recalled with the other ranges in recall # 09-333.
The consumer is a retired fire dept for 30 years and feels this unit poses a fire hazard.

I have a Sears Kenmore Elite Electric Range Model 790.9801 that I purchased in 2009. Since that time the lower oven racks have been getting looser and looser and now are at the point that whenever anything is placed on the racks and they are moved slightly the rack falls. On Aug 3, 2014 I was cooking a roast in the oven and went to take the the roast out when the rack fell causing burns on my hand. I have discussed this problem with Sears, 8 different people and the manufacture, Frigidire, with no help except to have a Sears Repair person come to my home on Aug 14th, charge me $79 to tell me the oven cavity is warped therefor making the racks fall and that a replacement oven cavity would cost me $437.76. I have found on the internet and CPSC website that other people have experienced this same problem with this model range.

Sears Holding Corp. CEO-[REDACTED] 3333 Beverley Road Hoffman Estate Ill 60179
February 8, 2014
Dear Mr.[REDACTED],
Thank you for having your assistant [REDACTED] contact me regarding my stove issues. I remain most unsatisfied at the time of this writing. This letter serves as a follow-up to my communique in January. I have received two telephone calls and one technician visit since then.
As noted in my previous letter, while baking cakes in December the oven door blew open making a loud noise, I was unable to complete baking, and still have not used the oven as I am scared as to what may happen. The last technician [REDACTED] spoke with me at length about my baking habits. I explained that I baked wine cakes during the holidays and have done so for many years all in electric ranges and NEVER had issues or explosions with stoves.
Mr. [REDACTED], I respectfully disagree with [REDACTED] assertion and technician [REDACTED]’s findings, that the alcohol in the cakes caused the explosion, particularly given that these explosions are known to happen with my range model #790.
As previously stated, I called the Sears store in White Plains, NY and I was advised by the director of operations that due to the problems that I am experiencing a new range should be provided as I am well within the warranty period and that I should contact the parts department at the store to get the protection agreement verified which I did and was again given the runaround and rerouted to customer service. Additionally,I spoke with one [REDACTED] who advised that I could receive a similar stove for a replacement in the amount of $459.99. I would like to know why there appears to be such a lack of symmetry and communication within your corporate offices.
My daughter has done some research and has discovered that the glass door ranges have indeed exploded. (See attachments).
Sincerely, [REDACTED]

This triggered the smoke alarm. Turning the control to OFF was not effective. Burner was stuck on full power high heat. I cut the power and cleaned up after the burner had cooled. I restored power and that burner came on, and was on high (even though the control was set to OFF). The burner did not cycle (as an uncovered burner should) but stayed on high continuously. Device is now disconnected. This could have resulted in a house fire.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Electric Range Model 790.9742390; Serial VF95216530
On the morning of 10/24/2013 at approximately 10:00 AM, I opened the oven door on my Kenmore Electric range. It is a Model 790. I had opened the door to a position that is approximately thirty (30) degrees from vertical when the outer glass exploded and spewed glass across the floor (pictures are attached). The oven was cold. This was to be the first use of the oven when the incident occurred. The oven had not been turned on the day the explosion occurred. It was last used the prior evening (10/23/2013) and was last turned off around (or shortly after 6:00 PM) on 10/23/2013. We have never used the self clean feature of the oven. We have used the bake, convection bake, and broil features. The oven was installed approximately four or five (or so) years ago (approx. 2008 - 2009). If I am able to find documentation, I will update this report with the purchase date.

We have a Sears Kenmore electric range/oven, purchased about 2 years ago. On Thursday night, 9/19/2013, when my wife turned the oven on by pressing the Bake button, the electronic circuitry in the top of the stove (what I call the tombstone on the back where the controls are) caught fire. Small flames came out the vents in back, and the smoke poured out from the control panel. I turned off the power at the breaker, and the fire went out. We did not use a fire extinguisher and the fire department was not called. The stove is under an extended warranty, and we are expecting the sears repairman today, hopefully, they’ve been no-shows twice.

Sears Kenmore Elite Slide In Electric Range Model #79041023800 purchased 12/30/2008 - Front right burner will not turn off until we shut off breaker. When using it on medium heat, tried to turn it off, then it went to high heat and we couldn’t turn it off. We have had several service calls on this range, 3 within 2 years. All were the control panel, which had to be replaced for around $550 each time. Now we are unable to use this range, when we turn the breaker back on, the front right burner goes to high heat. We paid about $2,100 for this range.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Flat Top Range
There is a recall for certain Kenmore flat top ranges due to the burner turning on even though no one turns it on and it not turning off after use even when the burner is turned off. My model isn’t on the list, but I am having a very similar problem. I was wondering if perhaps I missed my model number. We can have the 2 front burners on any temperature, and without warning they will put themselves up on high and won’t turn off. The knob doesn’t physically move, of course, but the burner starts glowing and heating exponentially. It takes forever for it to finally turn off, even though we turn the switch. Most times we have to turn the switch from on to off and eventually it turns off. There have been several occasions when we have actually turned off the circuit breaker to the range in order to turn the burner off. But, when we turn the circuit back on, the burner comes right back on even though the control knob is in the off position. I’m scared to death it will turn on all by itself, or that one of my teenage sons will be making something to eat while I am out and not be able to get it turned off again.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Elite electric range stainless steel.
My name is [REDACTED] and I purchased a Sears Kenmore Elite Electric Range in April of 2007. The Model number is 79046703605, and the serial number NF71612736. On Wednesday, February 13, 2013 I called 911 in reference to white smoke coming out from the range as well as the smell of an electrical type fire. Neither the oven nor the cook top was on, or in use at the time. I heard a noise from the kitchen area, smelled the odor, then smoke. The Daytona Beach Fire Department responded and advised it was my oven. After, the fire department cleared the scene, I called Sears Home Repair at 1-800-4 my home. Sears advised they would not be able to send a repair contractor out until Saturday, February 16, 2013. I asked if they could get someone to respond sooner as I would be out of town that weekend at a pre scheduled conference. Sears replied that was the earliest they could send someone. I replied, that was unacceptable and I would be forced to contact another repair company. I contacted Superior Services appliance repair in Daytona Beach Florida. They sent a repairman out that afternoon on February 13th. The repairman removed the back panel where he found the parts that caught on fire. The parts were 1 fan motor part number 5304467898, relay board part number 316418101, board part number 316460900. Had I not been home at the time I could have possibly lost my pets and my home due to the this appliances internal fire. Further, I had to wait two weeks for the parts which were coming direct from the manufacturer. The total cost I paid for repair was 345.55. When I called Sears they claimed there was no manufacturer defect on the product. An appliance should not catch fire especially when not in use. This is a serious safety concern/defect with this appliance.

The product, in the report: Smoothtop Electric Range
Sometime around February 12th, 2013 callers began noticing odd incidents happening with their electric range that was purchased around March 15th, 2008.
The electric burners have been becoming extremely erratic. If consumers set the burner to simmer it escalates to maximum heat setting then other times they can set to simmer and it just turns off.
These incidents are so far isolated to the two front burners.
Caller has not contacted the manufacturer yet but does intend to contact him.
There have been no injuries.

The product, in the report: SEARS KENMORE ELITE ELECTRIC BUILT-IN OVEN 30” SINGLE MODEL 790.49073400 SERIAL # NF 43716600
Fire in oven control panel. Oven purchased new Jan. 28, 2007 from Sears retail store located in Killeen Mall, Killeen, Texas 02487. No past problems with oven. On Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 at approximately 6 p.m. prepared to broil steaks for supper. Turned oven on to broil and there was a loud popping noise, crackling sound and flames erupting from the top of the control panel. The electric breaker immediatly switched off. There was smoke and a phenolic-like odor (burning plastic ?) but no more flames. It appears only the control panel was involved. There were no flames or smoke from the oven itself. This is a Sears 30” Kenmore Elite single built-in electric oven model 790.49073400 serial # NF43716600 (info from the sales receipt and sticker tag inside the oven) This oven is built-in to surrounding wooden kitchen cabinetry and could very well have caused major damage to my residence. Thanks to the breaker switching off immediately, there appears to be only very minor smoke damage to the wooden cabinet trim above the control panel. I believe this oven is a definite safety and fire hazard.

The product, in the report: Electric 30” free standing range
We had a spontaneas fire in our electronic oven contro l(EOC) at 4:0 pm on 1-8-13.My wife put some food into the oven using the touchpad button ‘Warm & Hold”, then pressed the “Start” touchpad button as she has done over the 8 yrs 2 mos we owned the range (It was bought new).About 20 mins later we heard a loud pop and crackling noises emanating from the kitchen. We both entered the kitchen from the living room to find 4”-5” flames and black soot coming from the back of the stove panel. I pulled the range away from the kitchen wall as my wife pulled the electric cord from its receptacle simultaneously. Upon inspecting the back of the range it appears the malfunction started the fire in the vicinity of the “Start” button. No injuries were incurred or damage to the kitchen wall except for black soot which cleaned up. I believe this can be attributed to our quick response upon hearing the strange noises in the kitchen. I shudder to think if we were in another part of the house out of hearing range. The 40 amp dedicated range circuit trip switch on the main circuit panel did not trip off. This raises the the question in my mind is there no device, fuse or otherwise to prevent this kind of occurrence to appliances with touchpads especially high voltage/amp devices like cooking ranges?

The first time it happened was when I was baking a casserole. I pulled out the rack to see if it was done. As I pulled out the rack it collapsed on one side tiping the casserole so that it spilled into the oven and onto the oven door. No one was burned but it is dangerous. It has done this numerous times. It is also getting worse. We don’t pull out the racks anymore. The range is about 3 years old and no longer under warranty. You can see that the oven liner is warped. If you hold a straight edge on the left side you can see that it is bowed out.

The product, in the report: Electric smooth top range with four burners
Caller purchased smooth top electric range in late 2002 and had no problems with it until around Thanksgiving 2007 when she was cooking and the range went automatically from bake to cleaning. She tried to turn the range off or have it revert to the bake mode again but she had to trip the breaker to turn it off. She tripped the breaker back on to finish cooking but had to wait a few days before she could get back to normal function for the range because previous tries had still placed it back into the cleaning mode. Each time it switched modes while she was cooking it would flash an F1 display and she could not clear the display so she had to trip the breaker. After a few days the range seemed to perform normally for intervals of one to three months during episodes. The digital board was replaced in December 1st, 2011 with the belief that this would correct the problems with the random switch of power and mode.
November 16th, 2012 caller was cooking with oven set at 350 degrees when the oven automatically went from bake mode to broil mode. Caller again tried to turn the range off but had to trip the breaker to disconnect power before the range would turn off. She again tried to turn the power back on by tripping the breaker again, left it off for a week, tried using it again by broiling bread and it worked fine for approximately ten minutes then she couldn’t go to the bake mode or turn the range off. She disconnected the breaker again then purchased another range from a different manufacturer.
She is asking to be reimbursed at manufacturer expense for $649.00 price of new range.
She has not contacted the manufacturer but does intend to contact them. There were no injuries reported

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Electric Cooktop Model 790.4272 - P/N 318293825
Message = Approximately seven years ago I purchased a Sears Kenmore elctric Cooktop, Model 790.4272, P/N 318293825. Four months ago my wife said to me that the “Cooktop was turning on by itself?” At first I assume that she had been cooking, took the pot off the stove and just forgot to turn off the burner...I went over to the stove and all knobs were in the OFF position I then went into the basement to the electric control panel and turned off the breaker to the cooktop and the burners went off...I waited a few minutes and turned the stove back on, and they stayed off. I assume that it was just quirk and went about my business, a few hours later I was watching the Jay Leno show and I smelled something burning...I went into the kitchen and ALL FOUR BURNERS WERE ON...Full high...The knobs were in the off position, I turned the knobs thinking that maybe they were jammed on the wrong way, the burners just kept of burning full power...I went into the basement and this time turned the burners off, went up stairs and checked to make sure the burners were off, and they were. The next morning I went back to the basement and turned on the breaker and immediately the stove was back on, again NO ONE turned the stove on...It just lite up by itself...
My concern is that had the stove not started when i was awake, it could have easily started the wooden cabinets on fire and eventually burned my home down...I called Sears and they said “The unit is out of warranty!” I said I am not interested in the warranty, I have already replaced the cooktop with another brand, I am concerned that there are other units of this type in service that could lead to house fires, injuries and even death to people who are not aware of the potential for injury this cooktop has...I still have the old unit, again my reasson for contact the Gov’t is that I find it difficult to believe that my cooktop is the ONLY ONE in America that has this apparent defective control issue....

I was preheating the oven of my Kenmore electric range, model 790.94001403, and was upstairs finishing getting ready for work when I heard a tzzz sound and the lights dimmed briefly. I went to the kitchen to investigate and found smoke coming out of the burner vent, looked through the glass of the oven door and saw that about four inches of the bottom heating element had melted starting at the point where it attaches to the oven wall. I quickly heating element had melted starting at the point where it attaches to the oven wall. the oven and had no further incident. This range is only 7 years old.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmorre elite slide in electric range
Our very expensive Sears Kenmore Elite slide in range, model number 790.46613500, manufactured in October 2005 has a severe malfunction rendering it unsafe.
On Sunday, September 16, 2012 the left front surface heating element: 1) turn ons spontaneously without being switched on; 2) fail to turn off after being switched off. This poses a fire and burn hazard to my household.
This is the identical problem that The CPSC issued a recall notice, http://www.smoothtoprangerecall.com/
When I called the company and informed them of the problem, they denied to fix the range , on the grounds that the model number is not on their list.
What do you recommend I do now?

Between August 2nd and August 9th, 2012, caller turned his Kenmore Oven on that had been purchased Spring 2011 to bake a cake at 350 degrees, After approximately fifteen minutes, he and his wife heard a “pop” sound and then an explosion.
When they returned to their kitchen they observed that the glass oven door had exploded sending glass shards as far as ten feet away from the oven with the nearest shard being just below the oven.
They contacted the retailer/manufacturer the same day, left contact information and no one responded by returning his call, leaving him believing that they were pretty much not interested.
They then contacted the retailer and was informed only that the unit was no longer on warranty.
Caller is relieved that he and his wife were not injured but is reporting this incident as a severe safety hazard due to the potential for injury if anyone had been nearby when the glass exploded.

This is a Sears Kenmore Combination Microwave/Wall Oven purchased in December 2008 Model# 790.47843408 s/n NF84613753. During normal operation, the oven shelf will fall down from the middle slot and spill hot contents from whatever is cooking onto the person pulling out the shelf or or sometimes just opening the oven door. This is due to the oven walls bowing out (I think) as the shelf is too short side-to-side in the middle position to stay in place. This is a manufacturing defect which Sears says is not covered by warranty and they will not repair it.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Self Cleaning Electric Oven
Kenmore Self Cleaning Oven. Model Number 665.95788000. Serial Number RK1012334. I was cooking Chicken in the oven at 350 Degrees. About 15-20 Minutes later, smoke was poring out. It appears that the oven had started to broil. The top heating element was very red and stayed that way. The whole oven was hot. The walls and counters around the oven was hot. I tried to shut the unit off and it would not shut off. I pulled the plug and let it sit for some time. I then plugged it back in and without pressing anything, the oven started to heat up again very quickly. Because the surrounding area was hot and getting hotter, this poses a fire hazard.

All was turned off on range when the left front burner (if facing range) made cracking/pop sound and cracked the portion of the glass top that was around that burner. There are more than a few cracks but they are contained in the burner area.
The right front burner element size can be adjusted to inner, middle or all but skips over middle.
This same burner when turned on and used for cooking, shoots tiny little sparks under the glasstop.
Caller contacted manufacturer today, April 24th, 2012 and was advised to create a report with CPSC.
Caller would request that her range be repaired at manufacturer expense or if she has repaired the range she requests to be reimbursed all charges at manufacturer expense.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Electric Range
The handle for the oven door came off several times. The screws that hold the handle fast to the oven door serve another purpose--to hold the two parts of the oven door together. When the handle came off, the front part of the door fell to the ground (with the windowglass resting on it); the inner part of the door was fast against the oven opening. The large, heavy piece of glass was not fastened inside the door, it just floats inside the front and inner part of the oven door; I did not break, even though it is not fastened in any way. When I tried to put the two parts of the door together, I noticed that the screws seem short, only about less than 1/4” to go into the plastic handle to fasten the handle onto the front of the oven door. The glass inside the door makes the door heavy, so when the handle is engaged to pull open the door, it seems there is a lot of stress on the screws that hold the oven door together, and also hold the handle onto the door. I believe this is dangerous; thankfully, the glass hasn’t broken in the numerous times the door has slammed to the ground, but if it were to happen, it might be disastrous--hot door, hot glass, etc. It is also difficult to get the oven door open when the front part of the door is on the floor; there is are springs between the doors and when the door slams it is because the door is heavy and the springs are tight; it is difficult to get the doors to go together because you have to squeeze really tight, and there is not enough of a screw to put securely to accomplish the dual purose. I believe this design is problematic because the likelihood of the handle coming off the front of the door is random; I never know when it will happen and I am always cautious about checking to see the screws are intact. The Sears serviceman told me the only thing he could do to correct the situation was to put two of the same screws into the door/handle, but I didn’t think that would help because the screws are too short to hold securely the amount of weight/force of repeated pulls on the handle/holding together the two parts of the door. I have called Sears numerous times about this and have been told they haven’t had any other calls on this matter, but on Friday, I spoke to someone who said he would send an email to their safety department; he directed me to the Call Center in Tucson, AZ and the woman I spoke to said she’s had many calls about the handle coming off because of the short screws.

The product, in the report: Kenmore UltraBake Stove (electric)
Our Kenmore Ultra-bake Stove model 9200-4102 Serial number #RP0315209 has a reoccurring problem which is very dangerous. On at least two separate occasion over the past few years has turned itself on a cleaning mode which causes the stove to heat up over 500 degrees and stay on. It does this randomly by itself and can’t be turned off without someone pulling the breaker. It has only been luck that someone has found it before the stove has overheated itself and possibly lead to fire. We have continued to keep up a full warranty on the stove and the Sears contractors that come out say that it is a common problem. In each case, they have replaced some part on the stove as covered by our purchased warranty. The most recent incident was today. We feel that Kenmore is not addressing the overall problem; that they have a very dangerous, potentially deadly design flaw in this stove. Our suggestion would be that at the very least they place an override switch on the outside of the stove which disables the power to the stove so that a person may turn it off and know that it will remain off.

The product, in the report: oven/ceramic range
I was cooking meat in the oven according to package directions (375 degrees for 60-70 minutes) and using a timer. Before the timer went off, I opened the oven because it was smoky. The food had burned and the oven was full of smoke. I immediately removed the food and turned off the oven. The oven display then registered F3 E3 or E3 F3. About 10 minutes later, I returned to the kitchen and the oven still seemed very hot and smoky. I opened the oven and the broiler was on, even though the oven was turned off. I now believe that the oven switched into self-cleaning mode during cooking. I kept trying to turn the oven off by hitting the power button, but it remained on. The entire house filled with smoke. I turned off the power at the home’s circuit breaker and we pulled the oven out away from the cabinets. The wood of the cabinets on either side of the oven was very hot. We had to open our attic and several windows to minimize the smoke in the house, which my sleeping children were breathing. This morning, the sides of the oven were still warm.
I am certain that if I had not cut off the power when I did, this oven would have started a fire.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite black/stainless Smooth Top electric, free standing range.
Yesterday evening, the right rear burner on my Kenmore Elite Smooth top range did not get hot after I turned it on to high. I waited a few minutes, still didn’t even get warm. I thumped the burner thinking something was loose - immediately, all the coils on this burner (visible under the ceramic top) became red hot poker red and hotter than these burners have ever been. with about 1/2 inch of the beginning of the coil becoming even redder, and seemed to flare up and flicker a little. Made a filament type noise while it was flickering, like when you shake a lightbulb. This alarmed me. I’ve never seen a smooth top do this. Turned it off and didn’t use it. The other burners seemed to be working as usual. This morning I re-tried the right rear one - same thing - became immediately very hot with the same flickering up and filament sound. Oddly enough, this very same burner, which is my favorite and the one I’ve used mostly, did not seem to be getting as hot as it should for a few months now and the burner did not seem all that responsive to knob temp. changes. I attributed that to the fact that it is the most used burner, so I didn’t complain. But this business of now overheating and flickering is scary and probably dangerous. I called several numbers this morning to report this to Sears/Kenmore, including the one in the pat response from Sears on this website - all were totally useless, unless I wanted to pay over $100.00 for a service call. All numbers, including the local Sears store where I purchased this stove in July, of 2009, were unsympathetic, and seemed more interested in chastising me for not purchasing the “extended warranty”. I have been Sears’/Kenmore’s biggest fan for years, and spent a lot of money on a lot of appliances, tv’s, etc. with our local Sears, but no more. The way they are acting about these stove burner problems is inexcusable. Our stove costs over $1,200.00 and I shouldn’t have one burner out of service, and a possible fire hazard to worry about. I asked for a free diagnostic repair visit, and was refused. Nothing is going to be done about these matters until the responsible parties are sued.

The product, in the report: sears 2001 smooth top electric oven, model # 665-92014102
On Monday 1/16/12, i was making dinner, baked potatoes in aluminum foil, and my oven turned onto self cleaning mode after cooking for 30 minutes. It locked down, and caught on fire. We called 911 because our house was filled with smoke, and fire in the oven. The Fire Department instructed us to contact Sears, to report it, and I did. They also instructed me to report this to you as well.
