The product, in the report: Electric Range
Caller stated that she noticed that approximately 6 weeks ago she noticed that whenever you leaned against the knobs it would turn the burners on. She stated that her spouse leaned against the knob and when he had left the kitchen they noticed that the plastic container that was sitting on one of the burners started melting and flames erupted.
3/2015 Caller stated that a service called was placed at the repair facility and a technician was sent out. She was informed that there had been several complaints on this particular model because the knobs turn on easily.
Caller stated that she contacted the manufacturer about the problems she was having with the range and she was advised that the range was working properly.
Caller feels that this range is a fire hazard and should be recalled before it causes a house fire.
This range continues to be a problem. Everyone is afraid to get near the range as it turns on the burners and the lights in the oven. They don’t dare put anything on the top.
The caller doesn’t feel they need to live like this worrying about a range that turns on when you get next to it.

First aid Made Feb 18, 2015, sent to the company Feb 26, 2015, published by CPSC Mar 13, 2015
The product, in the report: 30-inch 4-element electric slide-in range, Architect Series II
In November, 2013, I purchased a Kitchen Aid electric range, Model # KESS907SBL. Shortly after purchase I discovered that the burners were accidentally being turned on simply by someone leaning against the controls. On one occasion a pan was badly burned and not detected until our smoke alarm activated.
I contacted Kitchen Aid. Their only response was “do not leave unattended items on the stove top.” I asked about a way to solve this problem and sometime later received in the mail a twisted piece of metal wire with no letter of explanation nor any instructions on how to apply the piece. I had no idea what to do with it.
Since then there have been numerous occasions, at least 10, when a burner has been turned on because someone leaned against the controls. This occurs even when I am not using the stove. My hand was slightly burned when I did not realize a burner was hot. A guest in my home was shocked when she leaned on the stove and a burner came on.
I believe this to be a major safety hazard and will be surprised if it has never before been reported. I would like to have this range replaced by a model that does not have this problem, although Kitchen Aid has not yet been approached. I am hoping that your office might be able to assist me in this.
Looking forward to your response.

No one hurt Made Jan 21, 2015, sent to the company Feb 25, 2015, published by CPSC Mar 12, 2015
The product, in the report: (Electric)Oven glass door
Consumer stated that his oven door exploded twice, in 2011 and again 1/2/15. The door was replaced however the incident re-occurred. The oven was on approximately 3 mins while it was pre-heating and the inner glass door shattered dispersing glass pieces unto the floor.
(1/2015) The manufacturer was contacted and he was informed that the unit is no longer under warranty but he feels that they are not taken full responsibility that this is a design flaw that is unsafe and should be recalled.
Consumer is concerned that this oven glass door is a safety hazard and should be reported.
[REDACTED] 02/24/15 From Consent form:
To Whom it May Concern: This document is to clarify and expand on the “Incident Description” as taken down by the CPSC personnel during our phone conversation. While the oral brief is fundamentally accurate, my hope is that a more complete description will more fully alert others to the problem we experienced.
FACTS We bought our built in KitchenAide oven (model KEBS107SSS02 in 2009. It was purchased new from a local retailer and was installed by a highly experienced and reputable licensed kitchen remodeler. The unit sits under a cooktop of a different brand, and has a metal frame door holding 4 large panes of glass with air gaps between the layers of glass to allow cooking food to be viewed for insulation.
In 2011, while the oven was being preheated, at least two of the inner panes of glass shattered with an explosive pop, sending shards not only throughout the inside of the oven but also cascading onto the floor through the gap between the door and the oven. While the glass is “safety glass”, meaning that there were no large pieces with sharp points immediately on the floor, there were hundreds of pieces up to a quarter inch in diameter as well as a huge amount of finer pieces, some going down to the size of a glass powder. Inside the oven were the rest of the remains the glass panes, including larger but fragile pieces along with smaller and powdery fragments.
KitchenAide replaces the glass after that incident and assured us that we should not be concerned about a recurrence, citing the likelihood of a defect in the original glass as the cause of the failure.
In January of 2015, however, the new oven glass shattered again. Photos are at the end of this document.
KitchenAide is denying any responsibility, since we did not buy their warranty protection plan, and are not considering the possibility of a design flaw in the manufacture of either the metal portion of the oven door (e.g., a slight warp, which could stress the panes) or of the glass itself.
CONCERNS AND CONJECTURE
We consider ourselves lucky that no one in the kitchen was hurt, since even broken safety glass (especially the fine powdery shards) represents a significant hazard. Obviously, any food exposed to shattered glass would need to be thrown out.
We have never used the “self cleaning” feature of the oven, but given the extreme heat that this produces, we suspect that this would likely increase the stress on the oven.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Architect Series II 30” Microwave Combination Wall Oven, Model KEMS308SSS05
I purchased the KitchenAid Architect Series II 30” Microwave Combination Wall Oven, Model KEMS308SSS, in the summer of 2012. Last night (1/03/2015) I ran the self-cleaning cycle for perhaps the second or third time since I have owned the oven. At 2 1/4 hrs. into the cycle, we heard a loud explosion and glass breaking. The inside glass door had shattered and was spilling out onto our floors from the bottom of the oven. My research shows I am not the only owner who has experienced this problem with Kitchen Aid ovens. I will be contacting Kitchen Aid, even though I have an extended warranty on this appliance.

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid Electric Double Wall Oven KEBS208SSS
The top oven glass door of our Double Wall oven (KitchenAid KEBS208SSS) exploded like a bomb spitting out hot glass through the vents as far as 20 feet across the kitchen, during the self clean cycle. There were thousands of tiny pieces of tempered glass shatters left within the oven itself and across our kitchen. Luckily, no one was in the kitchen at the time and even more fortunate, we were home and able to shut the power off at the main circuit to turn the oven off. What if we had not been home? Would our house have burned down? I would never consider leaving the house with the oven on self clean but others might. After many phone calls to the head office in Tennessee, and a lot of back and forth, our oven was finally replaced in July 2014.

First aid Made Sep 7, 2014, sent to the company Sep 15, 2014, published by CPSC Sep 29, 2014
The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid model # KERS306BSS. Electric range
Kitchen Aid electric oven, model #KERS306BSS purchased three weeks ago. Second degree burn on two different occasions, both from the top of the oven door touching (very briefly) my shin and once on my upper arm. The oven vents it’s heat at the top of the oven door at the door handle. The handle stays cool, but the part of the door that tucks under the cook top has NOTHING to protect a consumer from a serious burn. Bare stainless steel with all the oven heat that’s been venting onto it for as long as you’ve been cooking. I was wearing jeans w/holes in the knees and went to get my food out of the oven I naturally bent a bit at the knees and barely touched the door and bam, it gave me a second degree burn on my knee cap! While reaching into the oven while door open half way I touched my tricep area to the door and received another burn. During baking process the oven being set for 325 and convection, right before my eyes the oven went into what I can only assume was clean mode and my independent thermometer was pegged at 600 degrees and the oven showed no signs of slowing down and I could not turn it off. The still glowing and operating oven said to unplug the oven. Nobody can shimmy a smoking hot and still running oven out from between it place with the cabinets! I ran to the garage and flipped the breaker. Geek squad replaced main computer/control board. Once the oven did this while food was in it but I could turn the oven off and I thought it was ME that had pressed something while setting the timer. It took only a couple minutes to turn bread dough to smoking black heap. Neither incident showed any kind of display saying it was NOT on bake. To it’s credit the oven did have a kill switch in place disabling consumer from turning it on again until it was repaired. I have been cooking for decades so another burn mark is no big deal and the oven is a real performer in keeping a perfect baking temperature (I am a baker) so I’m just extra careful, but can you imagine what would happen if while taking something from the oven a child were to walk by and touch brand new baby skin to the door? My god! Holidays are coming and families always gather in the kitchen. Including the babies.

The product, in the report: Electric Range
Electric range from TV and Appliance store in Oregon October 1st, 2005.
Caller had not used the self cleaning feature and decided to finally to use it in May 2014 and did so with no problems.
June 2014 the caller turned the oven on to preheat 450 degrees, the oven was on for approximately five minutes and the caller noticed an odor like that of a chemical smell. She looked into the oven, noticed a flashing light then opened the oven, she saw that it was caused by the broiler element that was arching with a circular spiral of arching moving around the broiling element. Caller turned the stove off.
The caller is not using the oven anymore after this last incident. She uses the cooktop only.
No injuries have been reported other than a minor burn to her right index finger when sparks hit it.
No treatment has been necessary.
She contacted the manufacturer September 2nd, 2014 and was advised by female representative after creating report with her to contact CPSC to create an incident report.

The product, in the report: This is a free standing all-electric white range/oven, smooth top.
Our Kitchenaide electric range-oven started by itself in the middle of the night reaching a temperature of 450 degrees. We heard beeping in the middle of the night, but never suspected the range. Had there been anything flammable in the oven, there certainly would have been a fire. We have repeatedly reset/unplugged the range, but within 5 minutes, the oven again starts by itself, sometime setting itself to 500 degrees. Kitchenaide was called and has refused to recall or notify owners of this issue.

First aid Made Oct 21, 2013, sent to the company Oct 29, 2013, published by CPSC Nov 13, 2013
The product, in the report: KitchenAid Architect 30-inch Smooth Surface Free Standing Electric Range Model # KERS202BSS
KithenAid free-standing electric range model number KERS202BSS. Range was purchased on 10/17/13 and installed by the appliance dealership from where it was purchased. Upon initial use of the oven I opened the bottom storage drawer to take out a baking pan. The oven was at 350 degrees. The front facing of the inside of the bottom storage drawer was so hot that it immediately burned blisters on the tops of four of my fingers when they lightly brushed against this area. Upon further investigation the top of the range, the sides of the range that stick out a little from the counter insert area and the front of the oven door were all too hot to touch. I contacted the appliance dealership who told me I would have to contact KitchenAid. KitchenAid stated that it was common sense not to open the bottom storage drawer when the oven was in use or you would get burned. I read the entire range manual and it does not refer to the oven storage drawer getting hot enough to burn the user during oven use. It also does not state that the oven storage drawer should not be opened during use. I stated that I had never used an oven in which the bottom storage drawer got hot enough to burn skin instantly and I had never used a range that got too hot to touch on all the outer surfaces when only the oven was in use. I stated that I wanted to return the range for a refund because based on my experience it was a dangerous and defective product. KitchenAid stated that they could only send out a service person (would take a week) and then decide on a resolution. I again stated that the only acceptable resolution to me was a return and full refund. Based on my experience this range should be recalled. It is a personal injury risk and a fire hazard when operated and used under normal circumstances.

I own a Kitchenaid wall oven microwave combo model # KEMC308Kss02 Sertial # Xs1816907. It is approximately 8 years old. I had a service technician attempt to fix the Microwave door switch this past weekend. When he was working on the unit , he discovered that the main power feed had burned up on the wiring harness. He told me this was a known problem in the years prior to my unit and there was a recall. He said he would not replace this part because it is a fire hazard and the unit must be replaced. There is an existing recall on this same unit from this manufacturer for this same problem from units made during a different time period. I believe that the recall should be expanded as the unit I have is exhibiting the same types of issues.

The product, in the report: ceramic top electric range with oven and 5 burners
The consumer stated that she purchased an electric range with a ceramic top on 08/13/2013. She stated that approximately 2 days after she purchased it she decided to turn on the oven to try it out and the entire outer area (not only the burners) of the ceramic top became extremely hot. The consumer stated that she turned off the oven and let the range cool down. The consumer stated that she turned on the burners to try it out and again the entire outer area of the ceramic top became extremely hot to the touch.
The consumer stated that she contacted the manufacturer and they directed her to the owner’s manual where it notifies consumers that this was normal for a ceramic top range.
The consumer stated that she contacted the retailer and they informed her that all of the ranges that they sale become hot.
The consumer believes that this product poses a burn hazard to consumers and children. The consumer believes that this product should be investigated because the outer [area] shouldn’t become extremely hot to the point where bystanders who are unaware could easily touch it.
The retailer (A&A) appliances ordered an identical range which he plugged in before delivery to the consumer. It had same problem - extremely hot where it shouldn’t be. He (A&A owner) claimed every range in his store is that way. Told consumer this is new normal.

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid Single Stove Model #KEBS107SSS in wall oven
In October 2007, we ordered a Kitchen Aid Single Stove Model #KEBS107SSS, Serial from Sears. In June 2008, the appliance was installed in our new home. We paid extra for the 3 year warranty, even though we felt it should not be necessary for a major appliance.
On November 15, 2012, we called Sears to repair the oven. The oven would not heat up after it was cleaned using the self-clean function. The repair man replaced the thermostat and recommended to never use the self-clean function as the oven will not work again. I did not listen to his advice; because I purchased the oven with self-clean to use it, not to clean the oven manually. Also, I understand there was a recall on a similar Kitchen Aid oven with the same thermostat problem!
On July 16, 2013, the oven would not heat up again after the self-clean function was used. We contacted the Sears repair office and the next available appointment was 7 days out. The repair office stated an oven with similar features, but not the same oven was recalled for the same, identical problem.
We wrote to Sears Holding Corporation and directly to Kitchen Aid. At this point, we aren’t sure what else we can do. We are afraid to use the self-clean again. And why should we have to clean the oven manually when we paid top dollars for this appliance. Do all in-wall ovens have the same problem? Please advise where we can go to get this oven replaced. Thank youy.
This was the unacceptable response we received from Sears Holding Corporation:
Thank you for contacting Sears. We are always interested in hearing from our Sears customers. We apologize for the inconvenience you have experienced with your oven. The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid Stainless Steel Electric/Convection Range
The reason I am writing this message is to provide my comments/concerns regarding a new Kitchen Aid appliance. In MAY 2013, my husband and I purchased a new Kitchen Aid stainless steel electric/convection oven as part of a suite of new stainless steel kitchen appliances. Within a few days of purchase, I utilized the oven portion of the range. To my amazement, not only did the stainless steel door become extremely hot to the touch, but at a high temperature (450 degrees) the stove top became warm to touch and the front of the stove top was almost as hot as the oven door. The oven door was sufficiently hot to possibly cause burning of a person’s hand. Thinking that it might be just a fluke because the range was brand new, I put off calling the repair man for about four weeks.
After four weeks, I called for the repair man to check the situation with the oven. Upon his arrival, the repair man indicated that the oven door would reach a certain temperature (approximately 185 degrees) while in use. The higher the temperature; the hotter the door would become. Also, the vents that are located on the oven door to vent the heat from the oven could cause the area around the door handle to become hot. He checked with his office to determine if similar concerns had been received. After discussion with his office, he indicated that the heating of the door was a normal operation of the range. I indicated to him that I felt the door was much hotter than the quoted temperature. We turned the oven to a temperature of 375 degrees. After do so, I still felt that the door was extremely too hot to the touch. The repair man noted the hot temperature of the door but was unable to provide a solution.
I feel that the issue concerning the oven door temperature is an unsafe condition. This problem has not occurred with any of the previous ranges that we have own. I feel the situation could be dangerous considering how hot the door becomes when the oven is being utilized. A burn could occur especially with small children if contact with the door is for more than a few seconds .
I consider this issue sufficiently serious enough to be considered for investigation. Also, I feel that the location of the oven vents is a contributing factor to the heat of the door when in use. Also, how much installation (if any) is utilized in the door to keep the temperature down?
Any consideration in review of this issue would be appreciated.

I have a Kitchen Aide 30” electric glass cook top model #KECD807xbl that is approximately 12 months old. This unit was replaced under warranty the first time due to one of the corners cracking and breaking off. The replacement unit was used to cook breakfast about two weeks ago and about fifteen minutes after the unit was turned off it exploded and shot a shard of glass approximately 3 inches long into the ceiling. Upon inspection the top was cracked diagonally from the downdraft baffle to the mid front on the left and right side. The shard came from the right side. If this had hit someone it would had embedded itself. My wife cut her finger on it when she picked it up off the floorbecause , at first we did not realize the loud pop we heard was the cook top exploding. I reported this to Whirlpool (the manufacturer) customer service and safety and they were going to send a service company to inspect and replace, but so far, no one has shown up after two weeks of waiting.

Was cooking chicken in oven, timer went off, turned chicken over and reset timer. Several minutes later I heard a “beep” from the oven and checked it since was too soon for timer to go off. Opened oven door and saw top element (broiler) was on and very red...chicken was burning. Closed door to get a pot holder to take chicken out...door locked after I closed it to get mitt...oven panel said “too hot” and kept door locked. Could not get door open to remove chicken which finally caught fire. Turned off breaker hoping that would allow us to open the door but that did not work. My husband (who has stage IV cancer) was fortunately able to gather the strength to yank the door open after several tries and we were able to get the fire out and remove the chicken (which was actually raw inside). Oven door glass broke as well as locking mechanism on the door itself.

The product, in the report: Electric slide in range. White.
Kitchenaid model #KESC300HWH4 electric range. I put piece of fish in oven to broil. Timer was set for 5 minutes. About 30 seconds after timer sounded, I went to kitchen to turn fish over, but before I got there I head a loud noise. When I opened the oven further, I saw that the inside glass of the door had exploded into the oven. I shut the door all the way & turned the oven off, but did not go near for a while until oven cooled, afraid that the outside glass might also break.
I called Kitchenaid on Tuesday AM (I was not available on Monday) & spoke to someone in consumer dept. & she took safety info from me. Then I was transferred to another person who said that although the oven is 12 years old, they would pay for part only to repair this oven, but I had to pay for all labor & I would have to pay for someone to look at it for an estimate as to the cost of labor.

The product, in the report: double electric built-in convection oven, self cleaning
Product - KitchenAid double built-in electric wall oven. Model KEBS207SS; Serial # D14428728. Purchased from Charlotte Appliance, Lake Ave. Rochester, NY. Installed 11/11/2011. The first time we tried to use the self-cleaning feature was on Mother’s Day 2012 (05/13/2012). We followed the instructions to the letter including removing loose burned food particles on the bottom of the oven. Being only 6 months old, the oven was only lightly soiled. We set the upper oven on a light cleaning cycle. Soon after it began it’s cool-down cycle, but while still in locked mode, the inner glass exploded with a loud bang, sending a shower of hot glass onto the kitchen floor through a gap in the bottom of the door.
We attempted to clean up the mess, but as we tried to remove the glass trapped in the space between the upper and lower doors, more glass kept pushing out from the gap in the upper door. Some of this found it’s way into the door of the bottom oven between it’s inner/outer glass panels. When the oven cooled down, we had to seal the off the space between the two doors with duct tape to prevent more glass from spilling onto the floor and into lower oven.
The next day, May 14th, I phoned Charlotte Appliance who referred me to their local authorized warranty service provider, County Wide Appliance. County Wide ordered the part and it has been on backorder since that time.
At this point we’ve been without the use of either oven for three weeks, and still lack a confirmed date for repair. County Wide did call Whirlpool (KitchenAid parent company) on Friday, 06/01/2012, and was told they would try to expedite a part from the manufacturing floor. Having lived with several self-cleaning ovens since the late 1960’s when the technology was new, I was appalled that this type of dangerous failure would occur on a presumably high-end appliance. After a short web search I learned that other people have had a similar experience with the very same model oven, and in New York State there is even a class action lawsuit against Whirlpool/Kitchenaid.
I wrote to Consumer Report about this and they recommended I write to you as well.
Thank you for your consideration of this serious situation.
Regards,

The caller reported that the consumer (his parents) had placed the wall oven on self cleaning mode. Approximately 1 hour later there was a smell of smoke that went unnoticed because it was believed that it was the smell of the oven being cleaned.
The caller stated that his parent’s became concerned when they awoke and the smell of smoke did not dissipate. The wooden cabinet next to the oven had a burn hole in the center of it. The wall oven is still operable. There is no visible damages to the oven.
4/1/12 The manufacturer was contacted and they were advised that there was no fire since no one witnessed the flames and that there was nothing they could do since the oven was out of warranty.
The caller is concerned that if this incident should re-occur it could cause a house fire.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid range
My husband and I purchased $5000.00 worth of Kitchen Aid appliances from Carl’s Appliance in Grand Blanc, Michigan, in January, 2009. One of these appliances was a range, model #KERS807SSS02, serial #XW4604115. Since I like to use the self cleaning feature as seldom as possible, I am careful to wipe up spills and keep the oven as clean as possible. As a result, I used the self cleaning feature for the first time in September, 2011, and the oven was still only lightly soiled. I selected the three hour cleaning cycle. An hour and a half into the cleaning process, the control panel went out, and the oven door would not open even after cool down. My husband called Kitchen Aid and was told to call a repair service. The repairman said that the problem was due to a defective sensor, and an open TCO. After the repairman was here, my husband went online to a KitchenAid trouble shooting site and found dozens of complaints regarding exactly the same issue. We also found that a class action suit has been filed against KitchenAid in California regarding this problem. It is obvious that Whirlpool Corporation has an issue with KitchenAid ranges which is not being addressed. The range was repaired today for $305.52. Based on the fact that there have been so many other KitchenAid owners who have experienced exactly the same problem, we believe that Whirlpool should cover the entire cost of this repair., irregardless of the fact that the range is out of warranty. We have been loyal Whirlpool customers for over forty years, and would like to continue believing that the Whirlpool name is one we can trust. Further, if this situation is not resolved to our satisfaction, we will be filing a complaint with the State of Michigan Attorney General’s office, Consumer Protection Division. A week after the range was repaired; I tried the self clean feature to ensure that it was working. Again, the oven shut down and the door locked half way through the cleaning cycle. The repairman returned and got the oven working, and 1 decided not to try the self clean feature again. February 14, water boiled over onto the glass cook top and shorted out parts of the control panel. The oven would not heat, although the panel lit up appropriately, and the oven light would not turn off. I have been told by an electrician that the short could have caused a fire, or resulted in a severe shock. I do not know whether this incident was due to the repairman disturbing the seal when he had the front panel off several times to repair the range, or if was the result of poor design on Whirpool’s part. Liquids should never be able to leak into the wiring of a properly sealed cook top as this creates a dangerous situation. The repairman came on February 16, and we were told that this repair would cost $770.00. So far, we have put $259.00 into a range that was only two and a half years old when the repairs began. If we decide to have the range repaired, we will have spent $1029.00 in repairs on a three year old range which we paid $1459.00 for! Further, I will be afraid to use the self clean feature, or have a boil over on the cook top for fear of another repair bill. I am deeply disappointed with Whirlpool, a company I have respected for years. I believe that this range should be replaced free of charge due to the number and cost of the failures of this product to perform as expected. Since I consider this latest incident a safety issue, 1 am also sending a copy of this letter to the State’s Attorney General’s office, Consumer Protection Division. Please feel free to contact us with any questions at [REDACTED], or cell phone # [REDACTED].

We just purchased the oven for a kitchen remodel. We only had it for 2 weeks. We turned on the “self-cleaning” feature and, 30 minutes into the cycle, one of the panes of door glass shattered and poured out of the oven door seam.
The glass was so hot, it burned through the finish on our hardwood floors and caused them to begin to smoulder and smoke. The floors had recently been refinished.

When attempting to power the oven in the off position by the switch she noticed that the range would not power off. She pressed the off button numerous times for the oven to power off. The oven was set on 425 degrees on bake for approximately an hour prior to the incident occurring.
On 1/25/2012 after baking in the oven at 350 degrees for an hour when she attempted to power the oven in the off position by the switch it would not. The circuit breaker had to be pulled.
She contacted the firm on 1/30/2012 where she was advised to leave the circuit breaker pulled and a service technician is scheduled to come out to the home to diagnose the failure on Thursday 2/2/2012.
The consumer was also advised by the representative from the firm (name not provided) that the diagnosing of the failure is free of charge but any repairs she would be required to pay out of pocket.
While doing some research on the internet she came across a forum/blog that indicated that if the faulty switch (switch that controls the power to the oven) is replaced in the appliance the could occur again.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid electric double ovens Model # KEBK206SSS04 Serial # DO3055127
Purchased KitchenAid (Whirlpool) double ovens in Dec. 2011 for new home construction. Have warranty still in place. Moved in and discovered after the appliances were installed that both ovens have raised “bubble” defects in the bottom of the ovens which have shards (sharp points) at the top of all the bubbles in the ceramic finish in the oven which can cut your hand when attempting to wipe the oven out from spills. I was asked by Whirlpool to take photos of the defects and send them in. I had a technician here that Whirlpool had sent and he gave me the information to submit the photos. Whirlpool simply sent back an email to the technician’s repair company and said it does not affect the performance of the product and therefore they will do nothing about it. This is a dangerous product that has the potential to cause serious, infectious cuts to your hand when attempting to clean it. It is not the smooth surface that is portrayed when viewing their model in the store to order from. They are admitting in the email that it is defective, but claims it does not affect the performance. I have begged them to do something, yet they tell me it was not reported within 30 days of purchase. I reported it as soon as the ovens were installed in the new home construction and had moved in to actually be able to see the damage. The technician they sent out the first time simply said that it was “normal” and they would not honor their warranty. The next technician clearly said it is NOT normal and reported it, but they still did nothing. No one from Whirlpool (KitchenAid) has come here to actually see the defective bubble shards. They are basing their conclusion on some photos that I, the consumer, had to take and email to them!

The product, in the report: KitchenAid electric range
In April 2005 I purchased a KitchenAid electic range model#KERA807PWW00. On May 18, 2005 for no apparent reason and while not in use the oven started displaying a message, “enter probe temp or remove probe” I had no idea how or why this happened and tried to clear it. The oven “bake” kicked on and I could not shut it off. The off button would not work. I pulled it out from the wall and unplugged it. I then contacted KitchenAid who referred me over to the Safety Division of Whirlpool. After explaining my issue again, I was asked a series of questions such as, “were there any personal injuries or property damages”? They said this is a safety issue and to leave it unplugged until someone could come out. They made arrangements for a repair service to come out the next day, May 19. They told me they would cover labor and I would have to pay for the parts if any were needed. The repair service came out and I explained again to him what it was doing. I helped him pull it out away from the wall so I could plug it in for him. The unit immediately went into “self clean”, the door locked and the smell was horrible. He also could not get the off button to work. He entered time to time it out. He then went over to his laptop, entered some information and told me I needed a new computer membrane which costs $220.00. I asked him how long this was covered for. He did not know any warranty information. I then called the Whirlpool Safety Division and spoke with the woman I talked to the day before. I asked her about the warranty which she stated 90 days. I explained my concern of of wanting to know if this could happen again. I wanted to know if it was possible for this unit to come on and cause a fire. I wanted to know who would take responsibility should this oven come on while we were sleeping or away from home. She could not tell me what could or would happen after the 90 days. Nor could she gaurantee me that when these computer membranes go these ovens won’t have a mind of thier own to cause serious damage or death. My issue was not paying $220.00 for a repair. My issue is the consumer needs to know the hazzard involved with an appliance that has a “brain” that can do what it wants to do when it wants to do it without human direction. This is way more than a computer “glich”. The models that have these type of computer membranes need to be recalled. At best an awareness letter needs to be mailed to the consumer. I paid $1,085.00 for this oven and I would have invested $220.00 to repair it if I could be gauranteed my family, my pets and my home were not in danger. It is also obvious to Whirlpool that the hazard is there or I would not have been told to leave it unplugged. The general public needs to be made aware of this so they have the opportunity to trade in there computerized oven for one that will not think on it’s own. A dead consumer does not need help from a consumer protection agency. We need your help now.

The product, in the report: slide in glass top range
Range was purchased July 13, 2009. Customer says the white plastic knobs that control burners on top of the glass top range have multiple temperature settings on each knob printed in a charcoal color on the white plastic knobs. After a bit of use the printed settings start coming off, thus eventually making the settings completely unreadable on all 4 knobs. This puts the electric glass top range in the same category as a [REDACTED] camp stove- just guess at your temperature. Customer says she contacted manufacturer and that they told her they have no reports of this issue and that it is a cosmetic issue for which they are not liable. The customer feels this is a safety issue as three burners are dual burners; therefore three knobs have both dual and single burner settings on each, showing low to high settings plus simmer (3 settings) and low medium, high settings for each of the fore-mentioned settings. The fourth burner is a standard burner with warm, melt, simmer (3 settings) low to high each with low, medium, high indicated for each setting. With the print rubbed or wiped off, she can only guess the settings. This could result in a kitchen fire (possibly grease getting too hot) or even bodily injury (something spattering from having too much heat).
