The product, in the report: sidie refrigerator Yes. They insist on sending a second repairman. The first one told the consumer nothing could be done. They refuse to replace it. Consumer doesn’t want a frig purchased new to be repaired, She wants a new product not one that must be fixed. They want to repair it. The consumer has contacted not only the manufacturer but the retail store as well, with no resolution.
(04/7/2014) The consumer stated that she noticed that the ice was coming out of the dispenser after she released the lever. The consumer gets small puddles of water in front of the unit because ice cubes fall to the floor.
(10/2014)The consumer stated that she got up in the middle of the night to get water. She went to get water from the dispenser. She almost fell but caught herself.
(12/2014) The consumer’s niece was in the kitchen standing near the refrigerator. She turned to come back out the kitchen and slipped and fell on her right knee. There was water from the melted ice cubes on the floor. No medical attention was required because she was not hurt. The consumer stated that she got the run-around from the place of purchase.
There is definitely a design flaw which Whirlpool wants to repair instead of a new replacement. Since contacting you, the problem has worsened, as ice falls out more frequently now. Please see following reports from others experiencing the identical problem. The consumer paid for a new appliance. That’s what she wants or her money back. Also, the consumer has fallen again!!! This is a serious accident waiting to happen.

No one hurt Made Jan 23, 2015, sent to the company Feb 2, 2015, published by CPSC Feb 17, 2015
The product, in the report: Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerator with door ice maker. Model number: ED2NHGXVQ01, 21.8 CUFT, White
Our Whirlpool refrigerator caught fire in the ice maker. While we slept at night, something seemed to explode in the freezer. By the time we got woke up and came in, we assumed it was the ice maker dropping ice, as it is usually loud. In the morning, we were overwhelmed with a gas-like smell. When I found the smell originating from the freezer, I opened it and everything was black. There was a large hole in the ceiling of the freezer, and melted plastic throughout the upper section of the freezer. What really concerns me the most is that the seal was almost completely burned through. If it had continued through that seal, it would have easily spread to our wood cabinets directly above the fridge, and throughout our home--as we slept. Ultimately, we contacted Whirlpool who sent out a repairman. He determined that the fire started in the ice maker, not the relay switch as we assumed (after reading about all of the recalls from Whirlpool and Maytag previously due to relay switches catching fire). I can only trust that we were told the truth about what started the fire. However, in any case, an ice maker should not be the cause of a fire inside your fridge, especially not a well-respected name brand like Whirlpool who is all too familiar with freezer fires. We were also told by Whirlpool that the side by side model we have is made to contain the fire inside. In our case, this was true, but this was only by luck I believe. I will be attaching pictures showing the freezer’s seal almost completely burned through. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool side by side refrigerator. Model GD5SHAXKQ00. SN: SL4649614.
12/29/2014 my wife and I were in the kitchen and smelled smoke coming from the refrigerator. We pulled the frig out from the wall and unplugged it. Looked inside the frig and didn’t notice anything unusual. I took 4-6 screws out of the back cardboard cover where smoke was still coming out. The smoke stopped and we waited 10-15 minutes and plugged unit back in. Heavy smoke started again and I could see a small electrical fire around a dual white box device on the side of a black round cylinder (compressor or condenser?) at the bottom and back of the frig. We unplugged and extinguished the fire. Moved unit outside and cleaned up smoke damage to the walls and floor.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Gold side by side refrigerator
My wife came home to a house filled with smoke, the fire department was called and when they arrived they found that the relay switch that connects to the compressor was on fire. Upon doing some research I found that Whirlpool had recalled 1.6 million refrigerators that were made under the Maytag name for the same component catching on fire. After numerous phone calls and playing hardball with Whirlpool, they have offered me half the original price of the thirteen year old unit ($750.00) which I assume is “Hush money”? I kept asking the supervisor “why have you not recalled this model when you know there’s a problem?” I did not get a response! My concern is that there are other units in other homes with families that don’t know that they are at risk. Pretty much sounds like the auto industry cover up to me~

Product: Whirpool Side by Side Refigerator Model No. GD5SHAXKQ00 Manufactured November 2011
My refrigerator stopped cooling so I moved the refrigerator away from wall and saw black burn marks on the wall behind the refrigerator. I removed the back cover of the refrigerator and saw there had been a fire in the refigerator.
I called Whirlpool and they sent out a technician to repair the refrigerator with no cost to me. About a year later, the week of September 22nd 2014, the same thing happened again. I called Whirlpool, and this time, they won’t pay to repair the refrigerator. They also said they didn’t have a record of my previous incident.

The product, in the report: refrigerator starter
Came home from a vacation to find contents in my refrigerator completely spoiled. I have a Whirlpool model ED5SHAXMQ00. Found out the starter relay had caught fire and completely melted the metal attachments to the prongs on the compressor. The starter relay disintegrated into many pieces when I tried to unplug it from the compressor. The prongs on the compressor are useless do to the metal melting to prongs as a result of the fire. Fortunately I did not have any further damage to my home.

The product, in the report: Refrigerator Freezer
Refrigerator being reported was in home purchased during the Spring of 2002. Caller had no problems with the unit until December 23rd, 2013. The caller filled her ice trays, placed them in the freezer and then shut the freezer door. As quickly as she shut the Refrigerator Freezer door she heard a ‘pop’ sound.
Thinking she had somehow placed the ice try off balance causing it to fall she re-opened the freezer and saw a flame approximately two inches high coming from the left front and she blew it out with no problem.
She left the door to the freezer open for a while then shut it and has had no problems with it since..
There have been no injuries to report
Caller has not contacted the manufacturer but does intend to contact them today.

Came home and smelled smoke/fumes coming from our Whirlpool Gold GSF26C5EXY00 Refrigerator. Pulled it away from the wall and unplugged the power cord. All our food was ruined.
The refrigerator was purchased 10/17/2012 and still under warranty but Whirlpool has still not offered any resolution. Lowe’s (where we purchased it) has offered to replace it with another brand.

The product, in the report: 22 cu. ft. refrigerator with top freezer, black, water dispenser on the door, ice make in the freezer.
I opened the refrigerator to get milk out for my 18 month old twin before their nap. I saw and smelled smoke in the refrigerator, it could have easily been mistaken for the mist that occurs on hot days. I searched for the source of the smoke, but found nothing. I opened to freezer to investigate further and discovered more smoke. I closed the door and pulled the refrigerator away from the wall to see if there was smoke behind it or coming from the outside. I saw not smoke from the outside. I opened the freezer again, the smoke was more intense and was starting to fill the downstairs. I unplugged the refrigerator and grabbed a fire extinguisher. I opened the freezer again and saw smoke and flames in the back behind the plastic cover for the fan motor. I used the extinguisher to put out the flames. I checked on my wife and kids, they were all fine, and called the fire department. They came and investigated and stated that the fan motor had caught fire and to keep the unit unplugged.

Whirlpool Refrigerator. Model: GI6FARXXF02 Dispenser Front Parts. After aprox 6 mos, I noticed a severe build- up of Spores, Mildew and Fungus on the inside of the lce and Water Dispenser parts. Besides being disgusting, this is potentially sickening and deadly. This condition is not mentioned anywhere in the Users Manual, including the “Care and Cleaning” section. This sub-assembly is virtually impossible to clean while it is still embedded on the outside of the door. There also aren’t any instructions regarding how to remove it for proper cleaning. This is a major design flaw which I have to believe Whirlpool knew about but chose not to alert its’ customers to this deadly condition.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool refrigerator (model #ED2KHAXVS 03, serial #HR15016047)
Please see letter to I sent to P.C Richard & Son Corporate Office at 150 Price Parkway Farmingdale, LI, NY 11735 on April 5th, 2013. On February 9, 2012, I purchased a Whirlpool refrigerator (model #ED2KHAXVS 03, serial #HR15016047) from your store located at 109 Old Country Road in Carle Place, NY.
It seems that when this refrigerator was assembled, the door handle on the fresh food side was not properly tightened, resulting in it coming off the door and causing injury to my head (cut, contusion, and concussion), on March 30, 2013.
I requested service to my refrigerator and the technician [REDACTED] came out on April 5, 2013. He immediately suggested that there was nothing wrong with the handle, and stated that he had the same refrigerator. He then said that I was using the handle incorrectly to open the door and it had been pulled up on resulting in dislodging. Is there an instruction manual on how one should open this refrigerator door? I don’t think so. He finally suggested that if the design is faulty, I would need to take that up with the manufacturer.
I think the handle was inching up upon each use, until it eventually came off the door. I removed the handle for the technician, with very little effort, and he proceeded to make adjustments to tighten it. I am not certain what he did, but the handle did feel much more secure. This in my opinion indicates that it may not have been installed properly by the technician when it was delivered.
I am disappointed because in a situation such as this, one would not expect to have to debate and defend one’s self, especially after possible negligence on another party’s part has resulted in personal injury to a consumer. Additionally, to have a service person ask that you not request them for future repairs is absolutely unacceptable. (Although, I would not want this individual in my home again because of his lack customer service acumen.)
Is the expectation that I monitor both handles’ tightness, going forward in order to avoid injury? I do not think this is something that a consumer should have to be responsible for with a product that is being used under normal circumstances. I have a 3-year service contract, but would like to document this issue because 1) this is a consumer safety concern, 2) I fear that it will happen again and I or someone else (in my home, or others that own this model) may sustain the same or greater injuries and 3) I need to know what recourse I have if this problem persists beyond my extended warranty.
I look forward to your reply and will wait until May 5, 2013 before seeking help from a consumer protection agency or Better Business Bureau. Please contact me at the above address or by phone at [REDACTED].

The product, in the report: Whirlpool refrigerator freezer
(04/08/2013)The consumer stated that this is the second of two refrigerator/freezers that he recently purchased. In both freezers he placed a refrigerator thermometer. The freeze range should be 0-20 below. His thermometer indicated 10 degrees above for the first one and 4-5 degrees above for the second one. Sometimes the degrees would vary. For short term safety this would probably be ok, but for long term freezing it would not be. He stated that he had ice cream in the freezer that became very soft.
The consumer stated that he wanted to give a safety alert for the product that is not freezing food properly. He stated that most people will not place a thermometer in the freezer, therefore they would not know that there is a problem.
(04/09/2013) The consumer contacted the manufacturer. He gave them information on the product. They arranged to have someone to come out and look at the both refrigerator/freezers. The compressor and the UV heater was not working on both of them.
The consumer stated that he had he has the product today, but is getting ready to get another brand and model.

The product, in the report: I believe that was covered previously in my description.
This is a refrigerator with 2 doors side by side on the top and one large drawer below for the freezer. Since it was new, the refrigerator doors must be closed forcefully or thy do not close completely. We had to clear out the fridge several times before we learned to slam the doors. Sometimes, the doors do not close and we don’t realize it until we go to the fridge again.. We do not get rid of food every time this happens; it would cost a lot of money. I called Whirlpool when this first happened and they said there was nothing they could do. I called again today, 2 and 1-1/2 years later and was told the same thing. It seems to me that this is a potentially dangerous design flaw that could cause food poisoning.

I had a fire in my whirlpool refrigerator model number ED5PHEXNL00. According to the repair man who came to my house it is the compressor start device. I have pictures if you need them. The fire department was called when my wife came home from town and said it smelled like plastic burning. The fire department used a thermal image camera to find the location. They determined it to be coming from the refrigerator and shut it down. Once I got home I removed the back off the refrigerator and found the part had burned and fused itself to the compressor. This happened on 1-3-13. A technician is in the process of ordering parts. I am currently using my brothers refrigerator. Not sure if this is a recall item or not. I am also not sure if you need to know. Thankfully my wife came home when she did, who knows how bad it could have got.

The product, in the report: It is a Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerator with ice maker. The Model Number is: ED5NHGXRQ01. The Serial Number is: ST2950159.
I am referring to a Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerator ice maker. The auger (made of plastic) in the ice maker which feeds the ice cubes into the crusher is breaking into small pieces with sharp, jagged edges. The small plastic pieces have begun coming out with the crushed ice. The pieces are white, and can hardly been seen in the crushed ice. My concern is that if any of these small plastic pieces are swallowed, it could create a hazardous situation in the esophagus, stomach, or other digestive organs in the person’s body. This seems to be a recurring problem with this ice maker. I had the same problem with the ice maker a few years ago. Whirlpool replaced the auger at no cost to me. We had had no incidents of injury, but became concerned when the small plastic pieces started showing up in the crushed ice. I feel Whirlpool should replace the auger and/or recall the entire unit until this issue is resolved in a satisfactory manner.

Woke up to a kitchen full of smoke. Called the fire department not knowing where the smoke was coming from. The fire department thought that it was from our Central heat since we had just turned it on for the first time. After they left I went into the refrigerator and noticed that it was not working. We went and checked the breaker box and noticed that it was tripped. Re-set it and the refrigerator started smoking again could smell wire burning. We disconnected it and called a repair man to come and check it out. He came and stated that it was the relay and that it had actually burned the compressor He cleaned all the terminals with a [REDACTED] tool due to residue from relay catching on fire melting unto compressor terminals and compressor. He told us to let it run for 24 hours but was not sure if it was ok. I now am worried that this may happen again and do not feel safe leaving my home. I do not trust this product at all. Whirlpool refrigerator Model #ED2VHGXMB10. Mfg Date 01/2004. I noticed that the Maytag Refregerators were recalled for this exact problem but not the Whirlpool.

Whirlpool Refrigerator Model#EDSPHEXNL00 started to smoke from the condenser plug ( this maybe relay). When I opened back panel to check it, it was burned out and melted, even melted the metal pin that was pluged in to the Relay. My kitchen was filled with smoke from it. This part should be recall since it can cause fire.

The product, in the report: whirlpool gold side by side model GS2SHGXKS01, serial # SL4344269, MFG./10-01,60HZ/1Phase/115V,140PSI low 330PSI high, 6.5, 5.000 R 134a type 22SSA . Compressor: Embraco EGY 80HLP (not with an oil cooler) if it had a oil cooler it would have a W after the HLP, 115 Vac 60Hz, 13 LRA, R134a 1PH, 513700072 fab1 21/sep/01 JA1LM7PJ. Whirlpool is now using part 8201557(which has an oil cooler) to replace part 2212191(no oil cooler) Engraved on one of the burnt smaller parts is 445KFBYY 53FKR1L,4TM and L75 on the other piece of the small part and another part has 4SP1101221219311 T01R printed on it. Whirlpool has also changed the Start-Device combo part 2212193 to 8201786.
Day 1 The house had a strange smell and a hazy look to it. After checking the house over, we could not find anything burning and the smell and haziness eventually went away. I did not think about this again until after researching refrigerators online. Day 2 After noticing that the ice was melting in the ice bin and onto the floor, I emptied the ice container, cleaned up the mess and made sure the door on the freezer was shut tight. The door had not been tight in the past so we figured that was the reason why the ice was melting. Day 3 The refrigerator and the freezer were both warm and all the food ruined. There are numerous fire related problems relating to whirlpool refrigerators. Maytag and other” Whirlpool” companies have recalled theirs with similar problems. Why has Whirlpool not recalled theirs when there are so many reports of SAFETY issues with their product? Does someone need to die or injured seriously before a recall happens? I was very lucky that the fire stayed contained to the refrigerator and extinguished itself. Recently the smoke detectors were taken down and put in the garage because they beeped even with new batteries. The week before we were away on vacation and a pet sitter would stop in to take care of our pets. Smoke detectors or not this could have been a tragedy with people or pets killed if the fire had not been contained like in the other reports regarding Whirlpool. Homes have burnt, but I do not think anyone has died yet. Whirlpool needs to recall these refrigerators before people die! Whirlpool is aware of the problem. When will they issue a recall, because there has to be a lot of ticking time bombs still out there? From what we gathered, the problem may be with the Start-Device combination unit (start relay and overload) and the capacitor. This is where the fire at least starts. The part # 2212193 is no longer available and replaced with part # 8201786. This leads us to believe that Whirlpool is definitely aware of a defect and this is the reason for the change in parts. It could also be the Capacitor part #2169373. It is either a defected part or it could be electrical problem or something else that is causing these parts to catch fire. Some people feel that by just replacing the burned parts that you would be just setting yourself up for another fire because it may be something else causing these parts to catch fire. There are numerous stories just like mine that you can find online some are even on you tube while others have found their way to “saferproducts.gov”. What needs to be done to have a working and safe refrigerator? It is very hard living without a running refrigerator. The drier part # 2199167 may be the wrong kind for use with refrigerant ( R-134a), it is no longer available and replaced with part # 4387019. The compressor part # 2212191 also is no longer available and replaced with part #8201557. The compressor that came with the unit is Embraco EGY 80HLP. The replacement is Embraco EGY 80HLPW, the W on the end stand for “with oil cooler”. This could also be the reason it catches fire because there is not a cooler on the original compressor. If the burnt parts are replaced without the cause being fixed, we could be setting ourselves up for another fire and our family and pets killed. Please let me know as soon as possible on what to do because there is not running refrigerator or freezer in the home. One of the burnt parts has this number 445KFBYY 53 FKR1L engraved on the actual part. It is either the capacitor or part of the start relay and overload. This part number is not listed on any part list. This could be the reason too. When researching the numerous fire related cases, this part was included with the same part number in pictures posted online by others whom have had fires. It is right in the middle of where the fire starts. It seems a little fishy that whirlpool does not have this part listed when it is on their equipment. Thank you,

The product, in the report: SIDE BY SIDE REFRIGERATOR FREEZER (WHITE)
SERIAL # SP1054263 MFG DATE MAR 2003. MODEL #ED5GTFXKQ02 SIDE BY SIDE WHIRLPOOL REFRIGERATOR. Upon walking into my kitchen today (Sept 2, 2012) I smelled an electrical fire and called for my husband to help me locate the fire. We found the fire in the back of our refrigerator and quickly unplugged the unit. My husband was able to pull the relay switch (437NEBYY -77 FPB3L) from the unit and it was scorched and melted. We tried to call Whirlpool consumer line and got a recording that they were not open. I left a message online on their chat online option and didn’t get a response.
Of course I searched the internet to see about locating a replacement part and found an abundance of complaints concerning this issue with this switch. It is unbelievable this company has not either issued a recall of the switch and replace them with a new switch that is not defective or recall the refrigerators themselves. So far they have been fortunate in that the owners have been home when this occurs. It is just fortunate for us that it happened on a Sunday and not Monday-Saturday. As both of us are at work everyday except Sunday.
On a side note (frustration only!) it is a holiday weekend and we can’t get anyone to help us until Tuesday....at which time all of our refrigerated food will be ruined and need to be replaced. But at least our house didn’t burn down and the weather is nice enough that we can open our windows and air this stench out of our home.
I have always been a very loyal customer of Whirlpool. I own a [REDACTED] along with the refrigerator (All Whirlpool brand) and this is the first issue I have had with any of their products. Very disappointing in seeing the response this issue has had and how they have handled it.

We have an 8 year old, side-by-side refrigerator (Model#ED5PHEXMB00). It started making a crackling/popping noise and then white/gray smoke began to come out from behind and underneath the refrigerator. We pulled it away from the wall and unplugged it.
We contacted Whirlpool the same day and they were very helpful. The service technicians came out the next morning and determined that the relay to the compressor burned out and melted parts into the compressor. The technician indicated that it probably would not have caught on fire since it is designed to burn out, melt, and simply stop working, but he said there is really no guarantee of that. Whirlpool covered all costs for the service call and repairs, which totaled almost $700.

Whirlpool 9.6 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrigerator w/ Contour Doors Sears Item# 04609059000 | Model# ET0MSRXTB Delivered less than one month ago Cute stylish fridge, good size for a small cabin or apartment Well, my BRAND NEW WHIRLPOOL FRIDGE FROM SEARS that was delivered on July 2 gave me a fright last night. I opened the freezer (!!) to prepare a meal to see FIRE (!!) behind the vents. I thought maybe it is reflecting the color of the wood of the paneling behind the unit. No. It is not. The vents of the freezer don’t have an opening in the back. It’s completely enclosed inside the unit. That’s where the flames were. I look more closely. It’s like a flaming toaster oven or fireplace on the other side of the freezer vents. I put my hand inside the freezer, on the bottom near the vents on the inside of the back of the freezer box (inside of the freezer) and it’s HOT HOT HOT there was FIRE BACK THERE. In the freezer!!! Searched the internet and apparently there was a recall for some faulty wiring of 1 million + refrigerators in 2009. For some wiring that causes the compressor to overheat and causes the fridge to burst into flames. And houses to go on fire. Figure they have a similar problem and have not fixed it I unplugged my fridge completely. I called Sears. They are replacing the fridge with a brand new fridge and they say they will bring it Friday morning. The freezer is not blackened inside, but some wires were definitely flaming inside the unit I definitely am glad to have a new fridge coming. I am very lucky to have seen the flames inside the freezer and to have been here when it happened. You don’t expect that and I am wondering if people have the freezer packed with food, this could be happening to them and they would not notice it since the vents would be covered, behind the food items. I recently got my fridge, and did not have too much in the freezer yet. I hope this complaint is investigated and if there is a similar design flaw to the last recall that they recall these refrigerators. There could have been a house fire and fatalities here. This is a wood structure. Please follow up. This was a brand new item. Thank goodness for the local Sears’ fantastic customer service, they stepped up to the plate and were very supportive about fixing the problem and exchanging the unit with a new one right away and taking this one to service and track down the problem. They said better safe than sorry. The manufacturer and the Consumer Safety Board need to investigate these reports. Very dangerous flaw and it seems that there are other complaints and the manufacturer needs to get more proactive with this. Not Sears’ fault, but Whirlpool’s.

I woke up and opened my bedroom door on Friday, July 27th to the smell of smoke and my living room and kitchen very hazy with smoke. Went quickly to look around and couldn’t find anything. I woke my husband up and he searched in and outside the house and in attic. The smell and smoke got very bad and we were fixing to call 911 when we noticed smoke rolling out from under our refrigerator. My husband quickly pulled the refrigerator out away from the wall and unplugged it. When we got it outside, my husband found that a little white box and all of the wires connected to the side of the compressor had burned. Later in the evening, we found all of the reports telling about WHIRLPOOL knowing that this could happen but chose not to tell the consumers. Just very blessed to have been home to find it. Just the day before, I had left my two teenage children home sleeping while I went to a meeting at school. Just very scary to think what might have happened had I not been at home and woke up...........

Hurt, care not known Made Mar 13, 2012, sent to the company Apr 6, 2012, published by CPSC Apr 20, 2012
The product, in the report: Refrigerator
I have had an ongoing battle/struggle with the Whirlpool Corp concerning a refrigerator which we purchased in February 2010. It is a poorly designed unit which causes considerable problems and has caused injury to myself on more than one occasion. None of the injuries were serious, but could have been. They have caused bruises and skin breaks on more than one occasion. I am enclosing letters that I have sent to Whirlpool (Nov 12,2011) and Hhgregg (Mar 2,2012) where we purchased this refrigerator concerning the problems. Whirlpool has refused to do anything about this unit even though they know it is causing problems (see attached Technical Training Pointer). Knowing that it has caused injury to myself and could do the same to other persons I feel you should be aware of it and perhaps do something that Whirlpool has failed to do. We have not heard from you nor Whirlpool concerning our problems with our Whirlpool Refrigerator -- Model ED2HAXVQ, SN HR00453231 that we purchased at your store about two years ago. It has been a problem ever since we have had it and continues to be a problem even today. It is of such poor design that it should be recalled and replacement given. If you do not have the correspondence (from your Lakeland, FI store) I am enclosing copies of them with this letter. This refrigerator has been a total disaster for us since we purchased it. The one other thing you should consider it that my wife and I are in our mid 80’s and this becomes really a problem for us. We have been in contact with Whirlpool starting sometime in mid 2010 and escalating in 2011 until we have become frustrated with Whirlpools inaction and lack of concern. I also have injured myself twice while attempting to remove the ice dispenser. It continually freezes up, builds up ice in the dispenser making it inoperable. When we first put a glass or some other dispenser item under the ice cube dispenser it dispense about 4 ounces of water before the ice starts. When I attempt to remove the ice dispenser to defrost it and clean the ice clumps it is a very difficult chore with ice flying all over the kitchen. I have learned to cover the floor around the refrigerator with towels before I start this chore. We have had this side by side door style of refrigerator since we moved to Florida in J 988, some 24 years ago and have never had this kind of problem. We have had [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] Co brands and now the Whirlpool which has caused us the problems. We hope you can come up with some kind of solution to our problem

January 2012 I was in my kitchen and heard a click or crackle type noise---very brief, maybe 2 seconds, but unusual (and on hearing it, I realized that it had made the noise the previous evening but I had not been sure where it came from)---and went to investigate. As I was standing next to the refrigerator and gazing into the adjoining room, it seemed as if there was smoke in the air. My daughter was with me and I asked her if it seemed smoky and she said she smelled “something burning”. At that moment, smoke started pouring out of the back of the refrigerator, almost instantly filling the whole downstairs with smoke, so I pulled the refrigerator out from the wall and unplugged it, which caused the smoke to stop. It was lucky I was home and that I was actually in the kitchen. I was extremely angry to then search online and find out that many others have experienced similar instances with their refrigerators---and some had progressed to fires--- and that there was a recall of the Maytag refrigerators, (made by Whirlpool) but not the ones with the Whirlpool labels for smoke, fire, scorching, etc. due to a defective compressor relay. While I was not going to pay to have a repair person come and determine what the problem was with my refrigerator, I watched youtube videos that could have been taken of my own experience and I could also echo the descriptions given of what happened. It is unacceptable to me that these refrigerators have not all been recalled---who ever worries about a fire hazard with a refrigerator??!!; I was lucky enough to be right there.

The product, in the report: 25 cu ft, side-by-side, stainless steel refrigerator
I have a Kitchenaid side-by-side refrigerator model KSRD25FKSS03 serial number SP2432342 manufactured in June 2003 and purchased in July/August of 2003 new from a local retailer in Santa Cruz, CA.
Today, the compressor relay or related parts caught fire. The parts in the location of the relay melted and partially burned through their housing. The circuit breaker powering the refrigerator did not trip; however, we were able to cut the main power to our house before any damage outside the unit occurred.
I spoke to Kitchenaid/Whirpool and they indicated there had been no safety recalls on this unit. They also declined to send anyone out for a safety check and repair except at my cost. I understand the unit is not under warranty; however, I believe there is a significant safety issue here since failure should not result in a fire, however small. Furthermore, there was significant smoke discharged into the home as a result. And I cannot imagine this is healthy for humans or pets. Also, if no one had been at home to trip the main circuit breaker, then this might have done significantly more damage.
I would like to understand if there are any other complaints that have been filed regarding this a related products from Whirpool, [REDACTED], and Maytag.

While in my kitchen I noticed the smell of burning and investigated to find out where it was coming from. From the onset of fumes within one minute there was a distinctive sparking/cracking sound coming from my Whirlpool side by side refrigerator freezer. I pulled the unit out and unplugged it from the electrical receptacle. I’m a handyman by trade and removed the cardboard rear cover to investigate. The compressor start device had completely burned and melted. I was grateful I’d been home and in the kitchen standing next to it when it happened, to unplug it from the wall. I replaced the start capacitor and the start device for my Whirlpool model ED5NHEXMQ1Q, purchased in March 2004.

Was LUCKILY home sick from work yesterday....awakened by the dogs....house was filled with a hazy smoke and horrible smell. Sent the dogs into yard and tried to find the source...eventually zeroed in on our Whirlpool side-by-side fridge....horrible smell and could hear a crackling sound. Immediately turned off main breaker, pulled fridge from wall, opened windows and doors. After enough smoke had cleared, with the help of google, i removed the panel off back of fridge to discover that what I now know was the compressor start relay was melted and had obviously been on fire. While I feel EXTREMELY lucky that I just happened to be home at the time, it is terrifying to find that this has been a common problem with this brand. Could you let me know of any recourse I may have with Whirlpool? Only a minute percentage of ppl will contact you, but google the term “Whirlpool refrigerator fire”

In the early am of 12/3/2011 he woke up thick gray smoke was coming from the back of the of the refrigerator and he immediately unplugged it from the wall outlet and removed the back cover.
The relay that was connected to the compressor was completely melted open causing the wirers to be exposed. He removed all of the food products from the refrigerator and placed them in another unit in the home. He did some research online and noticed that there was a recall (see Release #09-145 where the hazard was with an electrical failure in the relay, the component that turns on the refrigerator’s compressor, can cause overheating and pose a serious fire hazard.
He contacted the firm on 12/3/2011 and they were not open so he did a follow up on 12/5/2011.The representative that he spoke with (name was not provided) advised him that his unit was not affected by the recall (see Release #09-145) but they allowed him to purchase an extended warranty and a schedule a service technician on 12/7/2011.
The consumer indicated that he is glad that he was home when the failure occurred cause it could have possibly been a fire with the unit.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerator/freezer. Egg shell in color
I left my home on a trip 11/6/2011 and upon my return on 11/23/2011 (day before Thanksgiving), I discovered our Whirlpool refrigerator/freezer was not operating. Although the lights worked, the inside temperature was warm and the contents were spoiled and/or melted. The designated Whirlpool technician arrived Friday, 11/25 and advised me the compressor relay had caught fire, resulting in the burning of the compressor as well. Per the rep, we were lucky that was all that had burned and waived the service fee. The safety feature on the relay should have turned it off, not set fire. He suggested we call Whirlpool to determine whether or not they would assist in the repair of such a safety/fire hazard as the parts and labor were estimated to be $600-800.
When I contacted Whirlpool, they advised since the appliance was no longer under warranty (Jan., 2004 purchase), the responsibilty of repair fell on us. Although I acknowledged such, I inquired further as this was not a part that just ceased operating or a normal wear and tear issue but rather, a part that was faulty, presenting a true hazard. Subsequently, I’ve learned that Whirlpool was aware of this issue since 2005 but did not issue a recall (as they did with their Maytag line) and is currently suing the manufacturer of the this particular component.
A second call to Whirlpool resulted in a “there’s nothing we can do about it” response. A product warranty that has expired is one thing but it has nothing to do with a product that has posed a threat and hazard to my home and family from the day it was purchased and I think everyone should be made aware of this danger and the fact that Whirlpool knows of it as well.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Gold side by side refrigerator, stainless steel front, black sides.
I was in my kitchen when I heard a popping noise come from my Whirlpool side by side refrigerator. After that, smoke started coming from the bottom of the refrigerator and it was progressively getting worse. There was also a strong smell like that of an electrical fire. My husband came downstairs, moved the refrigerator and unplugged it. I am very thankful that we were home when this happened. If not, I feel certain that it would have caught on fire.
The technician recommended by my 2-10 Home Warranty company came to fix the refrigerator today. The problem was the relay switch. The switch is obviously burned. I have saved the burned switch and some of the wires that he clipped from the refrigerator.
Please check into this. I am afraid to leave my home. I am not confident that this will not happen again. The technician did tell me that the replacement relay switch has a cap that should smother the fire if that happened again. This tells me that there is a known problem with this switch. I do not find any recall information about this.

My 7 yr old Whirlpool side by side model refrigerator ED5PHEXNB00 started smoking and caught fire.
I was in the living room when I heard a brief crackling noise coming from the kitchen. When I went into the kitchen it smelled like something electrical was burning, however I could not figure out where it was coming from. When I opened the refrigerator door, I heard the crackling sound again and smoke started pouring out from behind the refrigerator. I pulled the refrigerator away from the wall and saw the smoke pouring out from the bottom, so I quickly unplugged it. The crackling noise and smoke then stopped. Yet enough smoke filled up my kitchen in that short amount of time that it took me 2 days to completely air out the electrical burn smell (with all windows open and fans going.) I hesitate to think what would have happened if I was not home and right there. Fortunately no one was injured.

After smelling electrical smoke in our kitchen and investigating, we found smoke pouring out of the start relay on the compressor of our side-by-side Whirlpool refrigerator, model EDSPHAXMQOO, date of manufacture 10-03. The 68.00 part has been replaced ... part box has the following note: ***ATTENTION*** WHIRLPOOL MAY PAY FORTHIS REPAIR Whirlpool Corporation may pay for this replacement part and associated labor costs for affected start relays. Obviously this is a known problem that needs to be dealt with before extensive damage and/or death occurs. Interesting note: This happened to my Mother-in-Iaw’s Whirlpool a few months back ... actually caused a fire, damaging wiring and other appliance components, the floor and the kitchen cabinets. Additionally, the house filled with smoke and had to be cleaned, along with damage that the fire crews caused while trekking throughout the house. WE were lucky because we were home and caught it before more damaged occurred, but obviously others have not been so lucky.

I purchased a whirlpool refrigerator. I used the top shelves for milk, water, juice etc. There was no weight limit indicated, so I thought this was ok. However, the white plastic cracked in several places, under pressure. Due to this, the glass edges were exposed, that were once covered by the protective hard plastic. Im afraid that further cracking, or chipping can occur and cause the glass to shatter and seriously injur myself or my young son. In addition the wall of the freezer is splitting open.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Refrigerator starter relay
My Whirlpool refrigerator (Model number ED25GWXFW00)(Ser# SK2331678) had smoke coming from the back bottom of the unit. I unplugged the unit and removed the lower back panel to find the Start Relay was smoking. After a while, when the part stopped smoking and the smoke dissipated, I removed the part to find there was a short inside the part. I called an appliance parts and repair shop for a replacement part. When I picked up the replacement part, the repairman informed me that this is a common problem with the Whirlpool Refrigerators with these older Start Relays, and that they have been known to catch fire.

The consumer says he smelled a burning smell in unit. A repairman removed the compressor start relay and it was significantly burned. The repairman replaced the relay. The consumer says he saw online where many consumers were having the same problem. The consumer says the fire was contained to that component and nearby wiring. He says there was no damage done anywhere else on the refrigerator. The consumer sent the manufacturer an email along with photographs and they have not responded. The repairman he used was a local technician that he uses.

The product, in the report: Refrigerator - 22 cu. ft. - bottom mount freezer.
We have an 18 month old Whirlpool refrigerator that we are told cannot be fixed as it has a “loose neutral” wire SOMEWHERE in the wiring harness. This does pose some threat of a fire. Two technicians, with a combined 55 years of experience, were stumped on why it wasn’t working until one of them made this discovery based on relatively low voltage (107v max) within the unit itself. The outlet for the frig is a full 119 volts. It is a dedicated outlet, by the way.
The model number is: GB2FHDXWB00
Whirlpool has been of extremely limited help with this so far. They’ve apologized and suggested I should have bought an extended warranty.

The product, in the report: Side by Side Refrigerator
Whirlpool Gold side by side refrigerator model GS6SHAXLQ03 starter relay burned out. Upon disassembly, blackened plastic housing and melted contacts were discovered. While researching this on the web, I found multiple reports of fires arising from this type and model of refrigerator, which has been attributed to the starter relay. The starter relay is common to multiple refrigerators (including Maytag). I did not experience the fire but the fact it got hot to melt metal contacts disturbs me.

The product, in the report: Refrigerator
This evening our kitchen filled with smoke, we called the fire department. The fireman determined that our 7 year old Whirpool Gold side by side refrigerator caught fire. The condenser overheated and the surrounding wiring and plastic ignited. The Whirpool side by side model number is GS5SHGXLS01. After the incident, I searched on-line and saw that our refrigerator fire was not the first. There were at least 34 outer incidents reported and there was even severals youtube videos showing a fire in this model.
Please protect the public and have this refrigerator recalled and require the manufacturer to replace the faulty product. Also, make sure that the manufacturer does not sell dangerous products and once they become aware of a problem they take immediate action to resolve the problem and protect the public health.
Please let me know what the Consumer Product Safety Commission is doing or will do about this dangerous Whirpool product.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Refrigerator model #GB2SHXTS01 (bottom-drawer freezer)
While my Whirlpool Refrigerator with Bottom Drawer Freezer (model #GB2SHDXTS) was running normally, it began to smell heavily outside of the fridge of burning/melting plastic. Upon further inspection, a plastic covering on the temperature control board had melted including some of the plastic wall panels of the fridge. There are burn marks on the ceiling and on the temperature control panel. After removing the temp control panel, the smell still persisted. Completely removed the temp control panel to outside of the house and the internal portion of the refrigerator still smelled of melted plastic. After at least two hours of leaving the temp control panel outside of the fridge and airing it out, the fridge still smells of burnt plastic. It makes us concerned about putting food back in the fridge because of the toxins that may be in the air inside of the fridge. I have found no other complaints about this phenomenon with this model, so I am submitting this report to hopefully help others.
