    The product, in the report: I would like to report a potential safety issue with my Whirlpool refrigerator (Model WRFF3536SZ), purchased in October 2025. I discovered what appear to be metal shavings mixed in the ice produced by the automatic ice maker. This appears to be an engineering flaw in the model that creates a risk of accidental ingestion. I am not aware of any injuries, but I do not know how long the contamination may have been occurring before I found it. I have stopped using the ice maker, documented the issue with photos, and reported it to Whirlpool as it is still under warranty. A technician came out and said he would need to order a new part to replace it but because this is been common, the part is on back order and they don’t know when it might be in. I am submitting this report in case this is a manufacturing or design defect that could affect other consumers.

    On May 17, 2026, my Whirlpool French-door refrigerator (Model: WRF535SWHZ) experienced a catastrophic electrical failure that resulted in an active internal fire. The fire originated from a manufacturing defect within the ice mold heater inside the ice maker. The fire melted plastic components inside the freezer ice maker and filled both the entire freezer and refrigerator cabins with thick, acrid, toxic plastic smoke. The fire created an immediate hazard of residential structure fire, heavy smoke inhalation, and toxic contamination of the home’s food supply. Due to the migration of vaporized plastic particles and carbon deposits into the sealed polyurethane foam insulation behind the interior liner walls and into the internal water/ice delivery lines, the appliance is completely contaminated and cannot be safely remediated or repaired for residential food storage. As well, on the day of the incident we were fortunate to be home and my wife was standing 3 feet from the refrigerator when the large mass of smoke and toxic gas escaped the top and sides of the Whirlpool french door refrigerator, filling our kitchen, eating area, and side room with the smoke and liquid gas. So much that we had to open the windows and door to get the caustic smoke out. I happened to be standing behind the wall just a few feet from our breaker box so my wife was able to yell at me that the fridge was on fire and looked like it was going to blow up, and for me to shut off the fridge immediately. The electrical breaker was shut off to the refrigerator, preventing further fire spread and/or major smoke damage to our home.

    I have a concern with our refrigerator where I received a sliver in my hand from presumably a broken off burr from the rotating teeth inside my icemaker. The only reason I had this in my finger instead of my throat or GI tract is that I was cupping my hands to get some ice, then brushing them off in the sink when the sliver imbedded, otherwise this would have been in my drink. Upon teardown and inspection of the icemaker (see attached pics), the sliver appears to be a similar non magnetic (300 series?) type of stainless steel that the teeth are made from. The stampings that form the teeth are not very precise, and burrs and other stress concentrations can easily be seen under magnification.

    On 01/22/2026, I put a microwave TV dinner in our Whirlpool over the range microwave. About 3.5 minutes later, my husband heard a loud pop coming from the kitchen. A few seconds later, another lower sounding pop happened. He looked toward the kitchen and then a large amount of smoke was coming from our microwave oven. The smoke was spreading through the house. Our fire alarm went off. At 03:54PM [REDACTED] called because, our fire alarm went off. I did some research online and saw that there were recalls on Whirlpool over the range microwaves in 2016 and 2018 that there were recalled due to fire hazards. Our microwave had the same problem. But, because our model was not on the recall list, we were not taken care of in the same manner as the microwaves that were on the recall list. Our microwave model and serial numbers were not listed on the recall. I called Whirlpool on 01/23/2026 and reported the problem. They sent a technician on 01/28/2026. He took pictures and reported the problem to Whirlpool. The technician said that the transformer blew. He said that the magnetron, capacitor and diode may also be damaged.

    The product, in the report: Refrigerator + freezer, side by side. The freezer door dispenses ice and water

    I am reporting a significant safety defect regarding the wiring harness on my Whirlpool refrigerator (Model WRS571CIDM01). The internal wiring harness, which provides power to the freezer door’s ice maker, water dispenser, and control panel, is damaged and frayed at the lower door hinge due to repeated opening and closing of the door.

    Upon inspection, two different qualified appliances technicians discovered exposed, energized copper wires that have broken through their insulation. These frayed wires are located in a high-moisture environment directly adjacent to the unit’s plastic water supply line. This creates an immediate risk of electrical arcing, fire, and potential electric shock.

    According to the technicians, Whirlpool has designed this unit such that the wiring harness is non-serviceable. The only way to remediate this electrical hazard is the total replacement of the freezer door assembly. This design flaw forces consumers to a $1,000+ structural replacement, which will eventually fail in the future again.

    Purchased a new Whirlpool refrigerator and kept hearing loud Popping since day 1. We reported it to the Lowe’s store where purchased, we were reassured that’s it’s normal because she had the same one and hers did it too. We didn’t agree, because we have never heard a refrigerator do that before. So, now after 5 years the refrigerator begins to not hold the cold in the freezer and the in the refrigerator, also started smelling something coming from the refrigerator. We went to Lowe’s with our paperwork, only to find out that we no longer have warranty. We purchased the 3 year extended and the product has a one year. Found out, you actually do not get the four years; the one year manufacturer runs at the same time as the extended. So, only 3 years if what you get as far as warranty. Didn’t help us! As the person, who Lowe’s recommend as a repair service to come check the refrigerator. They said, they didn’t have one, but there was a couple in town. She didn’t know if they would travel out of town to where we lived. We finally called a repair person out of Albuquerque to come check the refrigerator. We explained the situation to him. He said, the loud popping was not normal, maybe small noises when cooling. He checked the temperature in the freezer. He found out that only one side of the freezer was freezing. It was actually building up ice on that side. (It’s a frost free) He continued to remove the inside freezer panel. He found that it was burning and melting the inside. (fire hazard) The refrigerator could not be repaired in this condition. He said, he could try to refill the refrigerant (because it had been leaking out) enough to keep it going until we could get a new refrigerator, but he wouldn’t recommend with the fire danger. He recommended we get a new refrigerator asap. He couldn’t guarantee this refrigerator would make it much longer.

    I purchased a whirlpool refrigerator with ice maker model WRS321SDh208 11-17-20 for in home familly use, and is defective , the ice maker has been replaced x2 and want to 3rd after 4 service visits, ice will fall from the ice dispenser at different hours night and day and pose a safety risk for slips and injury/death, possible water damage if not here to get up. I’m a senior and had to catch myself from slipping at night while to kitchen.

    9 month old whirlpool refrigerator compressor completely failed. Compressor starter continues tried to restart compressor. The temperature of metal was 508 degrees before the buzzing alerted us to problem. The unit does not have any fail safe system built in to turn off power. Service tech states this is a major problem for whirlpool and the compressor cools with isbutane. A month without a refrigerator and a fire hazard to boot. I would not wish this on my worst enemy. We got this terrible, unsafe disaster from lowes. The new compressor will arrive Tuesday and the tech has to use a cutting torch to remove bad compressor. We have to be away from residence while this happens. PLEASE NOTE. WE LOST 365 PLUS DOLLARS IN FOOD AND 1200 DOLLARS WORTH OF MEDICATIONS BEING [REDACTED] ALSO.. Whirlpool refused any compensation or loaner refrigerator. I also purchae3d the 5 year warranty on the product at the same time.

    The product, in the report: Whirlpool 36-Inch Counter Depth 4 Door Refrigerator with Ice Maker in Door Model: WRQC7836RZ

    We purchased a Whirlpool 36-Inch Counter Depth 4 Door Refrigerator with Ice Maker in Door Model: WRQC7836RZ, in September 2024 from a local appliance store (Grand Appliance) and noted during delivery that the top left door (which is where the ice maker is located) closes on its own almost immediately after it is opened. After confirming that the refrigerator was in fact level and that was not the cause of the problem, Grand Appliance delivered us another refrigerator which had the same problem. After determining that these refrigerators were from the same manufacturing batch, a third party independent repair person suggested we contact Whirlpool directly to obtain a replacement which was not from the same manufacturing batch as he suspected the issue had something to do with improper placement of the hinges at the top of the refrigerator. After contacting Whirlpool’s corporate office, we were delivered a replacement refrigerator on March 3, 2025 which had the same problem of the top left door closing on its own. This is a serious safety issue because of the weight of this door (since the ice maker is located on this door) and the fact that it will close on the heads of our small children who are trying to get things out of the refrigerator. We therefore cannot allow our children to use the refrigerator to prevent any injuries from occurring.

On the bottom left-side area toward the rear (when facing refrigerator), there a jagged piece of metal dug into the floor. I am not sure what the metal is but it is attached to some type of bracket. This is the first time the refrigerator is being moved since it was installed on 11-2023.

    My Whirlpool refrigerator (MOD WRS321SDHZ08) exhibits a chemical smell inside, tainting food, water, and especially ice. The smell and taste especially accumulates after we are away, and the fridge is unopened. I contacted Costco, they contacted Whirlpool, and a tech visited. He said that the smell from plastic inside the fridge is normal and safe. Is there any way to verify what chemicals are causing the smell, and whether this is actually safe?

    (12/2023) The refrigerator was delivered to the consumer’s home

    (6/5/2024): The refrigerator’s filter indicated that it needed to be changed.

    When the consumer changed the water filter, water spilled into the refrigerator and freezer. It was like a geyser went off. Water flooded the inside of the refrigerator. By the time she was able to move the refrigerator and reach the shut-off valve water had spilled over the kitchen floor. Once she reached the shut-off valve, the consumer was able to turn the water off.

    The electric wall outlet behind the refrigerator got wet and this could have presented a shock hazard.

    The reported this to the manufacturer and their rep. arranged for an authorized technician to come out and the work on the refrigerator. However, after it was serviced, the problem became worse, and the ice dispenser stopped working.

    The consumer said she also lost an entire refrigerator of food.

    8/6/2024: The consumer spoke with the firm again and was told as long as the product is under warranty, they are willing to continue sending service technicians out. However, the consumer said that this doesn’t solve her problem and questions what happens when the warranty expires. She’s had 5 service calls on the product so far.

    The consumer indicated that 3 of the technicians told her that they were aware of the problem and there is no fix.

    The consumer has elderly visitors to her home, and they could be injured by falling on ice or water on the floor, after the ice melts.

    I own a Whirlpool refrigerator model number WRB322DMBM00, serial number K64404587. The freezer drawer, located at the bottom of the refrigerator, has a light switch is activated by a white plastic tab that hangs down from the top center at the front of the freezer. The edges of this actuator are extremely sharp and I have cut the back of my hand a number of times when reaching for items stored on the top shelf. I am on blood thinners so this has resulted in significant bleeding as this sharp piece of plastic is not visible when standing in front of the refrigerator. This is a safety hazard. I looked at similar newer Whirlpool brand refrigerators at Lowe’s and found the design of this switch actuator has been improved by mounting the switch horizontally in the front frame of the freezer, made the actuator wider and rounded the edge. This makes the switch clearly visible and eliminates the danger of lacerations by rounding the edge.

    I contacted the manufacturer by filling out a request by on their “contact us” form at whirlpool.com on 01/28/24 and provided all these details. I received an auto reply confirmation email with the subject line “We’re Here to Help” confirming all the details and comments I submitted, but to date was never contacted by Whirlpool.

    Whirlpool refrigerator not cooling fresh foods properly, 35 degrees top 45+ bottom. Food spoiled, turned black and had to discard. Installed remote thermometers to monitor temps and bottom never got near top temp, food spoiled and after 2 service attempts, spoke with Whirlpool tech direct and was told that is the way the refrigerator worked, there is nothing more they can do. Contacted Michigan Attorney General, then Whirlpool Executive made contact and after another service fiasco in which the service individual was told by Whirlpool Tech to remove the rubber seal at the rear of the third self. I was told the seal was never intended to be there when manufactured, I however checked with Whirlpool parts and it IS part of the shelf, but the next day it was still 34 top 48 bottom. When confronted with my investigation, Executive then made decision to supply another refrigerator, however THESE REFRIGERATORS WITH A SINGLE COOLING SYSTEM ARE ALL JUNK and there is no way for the fresh food section to maintain a constant temp top to bottom, so a replacement was out of the question. I rejected any offer from Whirlpool as I made my point in the company agreeing that the refrigerator(s) are faulty, so retained the junk and made a deflector and a compartment seal to direct the cold air down and have maintained a temp for both top and bottom of the fresh food section in the mid 30’s. After seeing [REDACTED] being hung out to dry, thought I’d make contact and prove that Whirlpool manufactures the same junk, as do others with a single cooling system. Was on vacation and the unit had the same refrigerator as ours, installed the thermometers and low and behold, 36 top shelf, 51 bottom. All the same JUNK. They should be removed from the market.

    There is a risk of shock or electrocution in the design of whirlpool refrigerators. The problem is well known, when the service technician came out he immediately knew the 120 volt AC wiring in the door had failed it is exposed not insulated. When a consumer opens a Whirlpool refrigerator, there’s insufficient protection in the electrical wiring.

    That 120 volt AC powerand other wiring powers the ice maker and 120 volt AC ice dispenser motor. I believe Whirlpool considers this the source of revenue when customers ice makers break which is a common occurrence due to unsafe wiring and sheath which has a high probability of failure, customers have their refrigerator serviced. The problem is there is a risk of electrocution or shock to small children near the exposed wiring when the refrigerator door is opened, as well as someone barefoot. I don’t know if the refrigerator door is properly grounded once the wire breakage occurs, Whirlpool has known about this and their substandard safety practices put the general public at risk.

    UPDATED ON 8/23/2023: [I have contacted Whirlpool Corporate who refuse to put me in contact with the CEO [REDACTED], instead I’m on an endless loop with Whirlpool Customer Support. I am formally requesting a recall of all Whirlpool appliance which endangers Whirlpool customers.

    In my case I have found out based service technicians familiar with this issue, that all Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerators have 120 VAC electrical exposure problem and that Whirlpool will not fix this even on new appliances. I am holding Whirlpool and the CPSC liable and responsible for any eletricution or shock which can cause a fatality related to this complaint. The Whirlpool Corporation switchboard transferred me I eventually ended up talking to [REDACTED] who I made aware of the issue and who hung up the phone on me, I am adding this to my complaint.]

After inspection, it was found that the two 6mm bolts that hold the bottom hinge bracket/pin, had sheared off allowing the bracket to come unattached from the body of the unit letting the door slip out from the upper pin and fall off the unit. The door landed solidly on the floor. Luckily there was no one in front of it when it fell. The door held only family used products that fit within the product supplied door bins. The bracket has since been reattached and the door re-mounted, but we are concerned with the safety of our small grandchildren (4 yrs. & 14 months old). I believe this warrants investigation before someone is seriously injured. I notified the Whirlpool Customer Service; [REDACTED] in North Carolina, but all they did was to take my information, and offered to send someone out to make the repairs in a week. Thank you.

    We purchased a Whirlpool Refrigerator about 2 years ago. Our cat started smelling the refrigerator about 9 months ago. My wife kept telling me she was getting a bad sore throat that would happen when she opened the freezer door. I did not really notice it myself until about 2 months or so ago. I did notice that the milk that I drink with ice cubes had a bad taste. I thought it was bad milk. I took the milk back to the store on 2 different occasions. One to [REDACTED] and one to [REDACTED]. Then I noticed that the milk tasted worse as the ice cubes melted. A short time later I began to notice a chemical smell coming from the fan area in the refrigerator. It made my wife and I both sick at this point. It made our throats so sore and our stomachs upset. I contacted Whirlpool and they sent a technician from [REDACTED] to check it. The technician called a service tech at Whirlpool and explained the chemical smell. The Whirlpool Tech told the [REDACTED] Tech to tell us that it was the supply line that was installed at the same time the refrigerator was. The [REDACTED] Tech told us that he did not believe that to be the problem. He thought it was the [REDACTED] behind the acrylic cover. We had him to order the new [REDACTED] at a cost of $76.25 on 31 May 2023. He came back to install it on 13 June 2023. Upon removing the [REDACTED] from the refrigerator he found that the lower portion all the way across the bottom had been burned off and causing the chemical smell and taste. I have pictures that I am going to try to attach. We do not want anyone else to go through what we have and may even have more health problems because of the refrigerator. Every one of them should be recalled.

    Our Whirlpool Side-by-side refrigerator suddenly stopped making ice. Upon investigating, several wires inside the freezer door have been severed.     The Whirlpool (WP) side by side refrigerator was purchased from Lowe’s on 10/12/22. After a vacation in February 2023, we came home to our fridge warm and all the food spoiled. 1st service appt was 2/8/23 with [REDACTED] appliance. This service required a silicone fix in the freezer which included unplugging the fridge (losing food again and clean up from defrosting the freezer) and plugging it in after 24 hours. The next service call was 2/15/23 by [REDACTED] due to the ice dispenser not working. 3 rd service call was on 2/21/23 by [REDACTED] and the tech called WP who stated to replace the control panel. The 4th service call was on 2/24/23 to replace the control panel, and the tech placed additional insulation to try to muffle the loud noises. The 5th service call was on 2/28/23 for loud noises and temps registering 39-42 and additional food spoilage. The tech [REDACTED] from [REDACTED] was provided with the video and dB meter levels as well as an explanation of the previous work and current concerns. [REDACTED] placed the temperature gauge directly into the ice for a reading of -2. I asked him why he was putting the gauge in my ice since that wasn’t sanitary and also it would yield the coldest temp. He didn’t provide an answer. [REDACTED] then took the temp gauge and placed it in between 2 aluminum cans in the fridge. I again asked why he was doing it that way, and he said that’s how he does it. After leaving the gauge in between the cans for a long time, the temp in the fridge was 40.3. [REDACTED] took pictures of both temps. He stated that he was going to call WP outside in his truck, I requested that he call WP in front of me just like the last tech did, but [REDACTED] stated he had to plug in his cell phone. After some time, [REDACTED] drove off and never gave me any further info. I called WP and they told me that [REDACTED} reported that the fridge was working well with -2 temp in the freezer and 38 temp in the fridge. I reported to WP and [REDACTED] appliance that he was fraudulent in reporting the fridge temp because I saw it. Both companies stated that they had to rely on the documentation from the tech, and they disregarded my report that I saw the temp reading at 40.3. The 6th service call was on 3/14 with [REDACTED]. The tech listened to our video and dB meter and stated we needed a new fan. the 7th service call was on 3/17/23 to replace the fan. During all these service calls, I was in contact with WP at 888-900-3381 talking to customer service and requesting supervisor calls. No one at WP would do anything but continue to schedule service calls. One time they sent $75.00 check for the spoiled food and extended my warranty 6 months to 4/12/24. On 3/14/23, I talked with [REDACTED] at WP and she stated that I had to let them replace the fan but I wouldn’t have to have any more service calls after that. I called WP customer service again on 3/21/23 and again they want to set up another service call. I declined and asked to have a supervisor call me. I have also called a Lowe’s manager to discuss my situation, and they stated that they’re not able to take the fridge back after 48 hours in my home. My fridge continues to run between 39-41 degrees and even in the morning when the fridge is opened for the 1st time after being closed all night long the fridge is 40 degrees. I am requesting the assistance to help me obtain a full refund of this refrigerator of $1553.13. I have had several parts replaced, had to take off of work, continued spoilage of food, illnesses due to unknowingly consuming spoiled food, waking during the night due to loud noises and many phone calls to WP for extended periods of time.     Consumer has a defective plastic grommet that causes the refrigerator door to fall off.

    The consumer had knee surgery prior to the incidents. The refrigerator door fell on her knee, on two different occasions.

    On a different day, her granddaughter opened the fridge and the door fell on her face.

    On December 1st, the consumer contacted Maytag and Whirlpool and followed up with both again. They keep asking the consumer if she has done anything to fix this. The consumer refuses to repair or replace it since the product is “defective”.

    She has tried calling both companies several times within the past few weeks and now they won’t even answer her calls. This is a fall hazard due to refrigerator door falling off. The consumer did not seek any medical attention; she soaked her knee in the tub, and helped her granddaughter with the injury.

    She uses this product daily and plans on keeping the unit for the next 30 days. The incidents occurred on December 1st,2022.

    Whirpool Refrigerator (French Door with Ice maker) Black Stainless steel. purchased on 8/27/21 it was delivered on 9/7/2021. Ice maker did not work . My husband called tri supply the retailer, and whirlpool. They sent appliance express out for repair, after coming out a couple times it was determined that the mechinism in the door was faulty and the repairman said we needed a new door and it would take 7 -10 days to get it and then they would replace it. He clipped some wires at the top of the door as he said he couldn’t rethread them in the door when the replacement arrives. Today is June 18, 2022 and I still do not have a new door or icemaker and the temperature in the refrigerator is not at 37 degrees. I bought a ref themo and it was 50 degrees. I called appliance express and told them the problem and that Ive been throwing food out due to spoilage. They sent a repairman out and he said he would order parts and set a time to come back out on 5/30 to do repair and they never showed up. So I called appliance express and spoke to [REDACTED], [REDACTED] called back said the parts would not help and the Whirlpool refrigerator was probably going out. I called whirlpool again and they did not have all the information from the repair shop appliance express. I sent whirlpool and appliance express and the FTC a letter with documentation that I was ready for Whirlpool to send a replacement or a check for $ $3301.61 The amount I paid for it. I have thrown lots of food away. Bought ice for almost a year. I do not want to get sick from the food not being at a correct temperature. I need a resolution to this product.

    Whirlpool Refrigerator/freezer...severed wires in freezer door harness from opening and closing freezer door. First lights in the freezer stopped working, then ice maker stopped working. Appliance repair came out and stated the wiring harness had severed and attempted to order a harness. Harness is no longer available. Severed wires are a shock and fire hazard; later on smelled plastic overheated or melting and contacted Whirlpool around October 5, 2021. On October 28 Whirlpool repair came out and they stated it required a whole new door, which they ordered. After almost 6 months the replacement door has never arrived and Whirlpool now admits it’s unlikely it will ever arrive as they have no idea what the status is. A week ago Whirlpool agreed to give us an allowance of 50% towards a new refrigerator freezer but nothing reasonable suitable is in stock for us to choose from across any of their brands, although suitable models are available through [REDACTED] and other stores.

I was able to catch the door half way down and then I found a pin that had fallen out and appears to be all that was holding this door in place. I now have the door duct taped onto the refrigerator. If my child or an older or less strong person were to open this door it would likely have caused serious injury or even death.

    Within the first month of owning the refrigerator, it stopped maintaining the appropriate temperature. This has caused food to spoil on numerous occasions over the past few months, because the problem is repetitive.

    9/7/2021: The consumer called the manufacturer and reported the matter to a rep. (name unavailable). That person told him that she would escalate this matter to a higher authority and placed him on hold. The consumer stayed on hold for 60 minutes, before hanging up. No one ever came back to the phone to speak with him.

    The refrigerator has 4 settings, but does not have a thermostat. The consumer said that the first 2 settings are useless. The 3rd setting is recommended by the manufacturer, in the owner’s manual. However, the 4th setting causes everything in the refrigerator to freeze.

    He believes that this presents the potential for salmonella.

    I purchased a new refrigerator in July 2021. Top freezer. I have had 3 service calls, and numerous emails to whirlpool regarding this refrigerators in ability to freeze ice creams and sherberts (several manufacturers). Job # [REDACTED]. To date the refrigerator is still not performing. Most recently my complaint was “elevated” to another in house tech. Her official statement ( as was others canned statement) that there’s nothing they can do. the refrigerator is performing the way it is “supposed” to. I have been questioning supposed to, getting the same canned answer. I have recorded the freezer temps over many days, with several thermometers. the range is 0-7 deg. most times 1-3 degrees. The ice cream never gets hard. always soft .. sometimes softer than soft serve. I researched the food temps. [REDACTED] specify s minus 5 to 0 deg. for proper storing of ice cream. The [REDACTED] states freezers should be -20 deg to 0. I was told by one service tech, if I want frozen ice cream to buy a freezer and place in garage! My complaint is simple - I can find absolutely no information on what temperature this refrigerator can produce. Nor will Whirlpool tell me. I believe by omitting the capabilities of this refrigerator in advertising and any documentation available, the buyer makes certain assumptions (that it works to food industry standards) and therefore cannot make an educated purchase. Therefore in my opinion this is deceptive advertising by omission. (1983 rulings) Please, in the best interest of all those buyers .. demand cooling performance specifications on refrigerators and freezers that consumers my make educated choices.     Potentially hazardous condition from plastic breaking off in Whirlpool refrigerator ice bucket assembly. My daughter recently noticed a piece of white plastic in a glass of ice. When I examined the ice bucket dispenser inside the refrigerator door I found several pieces of plastic had broken off from inside frame of bucket and were mixed in with the ice. This is a very dangerous situation as sharp pieces of plastic could be consumed. This is a Whirlpool refrigerator, model WRF989SDAH00, Serial# K24322446. I have taken pictures of the location of the hole in the ice bucket assembly. As far as I know noone has been injured. I attempted to report this to Whirlpool but their site would not accept my model number as valid. This appears to be the same defect that was reported in incident [REDACTED] in March 2018 which means the company has known about this for over 3 years and has done nothing to at least warn consumers to discontinue use of the ice bucket.

    Whirlpool side by side refrig / freezer Model WRS588FIHZ00, Serial HR71716380 - ice maker stopped working. Did research on internet to get ideas of what might be wrong. One clue led me to look at the wire harness that comes out the bottom and wraps around the freezer door hinge. Found 2 broken wires plus 2 other wires with insulation broken and wire exposed. No injuries or tragedy yet - but ripe for potential fire - exposed wire, broken wires. Called Whirlpool customer service number listed on their website on 6-10-2021. Explained issue to first person and asked if there was a product recall on this issue. She passed me on to repair, which turned out to be parts. No answer to the recall question. Parts gave me another number to call - which was to [REDACTED] promotion. This is not customer service but the issue is a safety / potential fire hazard that Whirlpool needs to address. Seems to me to be a serious design issue that has been complained about a number of times on this website by others.

    We bought a whirlpool side by side refrigerator/freezer in January 2020. My husband and I are the users. The first refrigerator froze all our food in the refrigerator. It was under warranty so we call whirlpool who scheduled a repairman twice. He did not show up either time. Whirlpool customer care then told us they didn’t have a contract with anyone in our area to honor the warranty so after weeks they sent a new refrigerator. The second refrigerator didn’t have any way to control the ice in the ice maker so again they sent a new refrigerator after several weeks. The third refrigerator was dented so we had them replace it. On May 2nd 2921 we noticed water pouring out of the ice dispenser and the floor was soaked with water. I opened the freezer door and everything was thawed. We lost hundreds of dollars of food which Whirlpool won’t cover. We had to throw everything in the trash and the refrigerator isn’t working either. We called Whirlpool it’s still under warranty and we are waiting for them to call back. We are going through the same process over again. I ate a sausage snack out of the refrigerator before I realized it wasn’t working either.

    I own a Whirlpool Refrigerator/Freezer with ice and water in the door. The dispenser motor had stopped working several months ago. After replacing the motor and the control board, it still didn’t work. Then suddenly I saw sparks ark out of the bottom of the door. I thought it was from the motor since it looked like ice had jammed the agitator. After that arc, the ice maker stopped producing ice completely. I did some more troubleshooting today after reading some hints on the web and one said to check the wiring loom that comes out of the bottom of the door. Sure enough, due to a terrible design flaw, the entire wiring harness had been severed. That explains the arcing and sparks coming out of the bottom of the door. This item should be recalled due to safety issues as it prevents serious danger to consumers.

As explained in the previous screen, an assembly of wires that controls the ice maker in freezer in door, but sits in a bundle at the base of the freezer door under the hinge, was cut through, simply by opening and closing the freezer door over time- approx 5 years of use. This location of wires is not protected in the kick plate but exposed.

    I am reporting a safety issue with a Whirlpool Side by Side Refrigerator Freezer, Model # WRS576FIDM01. I had a repair person come to my home to troubleshoot why the icemaker stopped working. It turned out the wire assembly that controls this, sits under the freezer door hinge, and over time simply opening and closing the freezer door cut through the wire package leaving them exposed and sticking out, where I could have been injured. I wrapped the exposed wires and one that was sharp sticking straight up in electrical tape. I have a picture of the cut wires.

The retail company and correspondence from Whirlpool said to only open it once a minute. That’s silly & didn’t help. They pasted a couple of pieces on plastic on the fridge. That didn’t help. They said fill the freezer full. That didn’t help. Now we learned of the compressor issue. A friend bought a [REDACTED]. Within a year it needed a new compressor. There are refrigerator issues. The American consumer is being scammed into buying extended warranties that cost hundreds of dollars. After seven months of pain I went to see a physician and have been attempting to regain the use of my shoulder and to reduce the pain in my shoulder.

    Most major refrigerator brands sold in ND (and throughout the country) have incompatible compressors (European) and refrigerant (USA). The refrigerant requires pressure that the compressors cannot handle. This results in compressors that require replacement within a short time (one year). The industry is aware of the issue. This is a scam. About a dozen different brands of refrigerators are manufactured by the same company. Currently, there is no recourse for the consumer. This is a financial scam. My injury issue is a result of the refrigerator sealing so tightly (due to energy savings rules) my shoulder was injured resulting in considerable pain.

    (09/29/2020) The refrigerator caught on fire at the bottom of the unit. The consumer disconnected the unit at the circuit breaker and threw water on the flames to put the fire out.

    The consumer stated that the ice maker is concealed in the freezer door. There is also a bundle of wires located on the bottom of the door that makes a 90 degree elbow. Opening and closing the door causes the wires to rub together. After the consumer put the fire out, he could see that the wires were burnt.

    The consumer contacted the manufacturer. He left messages and also filled out a form on line but have not received a response.

    Removed shelf from my Whirlpool refrigerator to clean it. The shelf slipped from hand , fell to the floor. The glass shattered into many small pieces , each about 1/4 to 1/2 inch . The distribution field of the pieces of glass was as much as 11 feet .

    We have a Whirlpool refrigerator side by side (WSF26C2EXY02) we bought new for our home we completed in the spring of 2013. Two weeks ago, the freezer had a slight funny smell, but it went away so I didn’t worry about it. However, yesterday morning I went for a 10 minute walk with my son and upon our return the house smelled funny. When I opened the freezer it was completely full of black smoke. Black smoke was also just pouring out of the vent in the front that goes to the ice maker as well. The fan was still running. The smoke was obviously electrical, melting plastic, really nasty. I immediately cut the power off in the breaker box and moved the unit outside. Luckily, I was working from home. If I had not been here, I’m confident we would have lost a portion or all of our home. I’ve had some breathing problems today from trying to take the front cover off to get the feet retracted so I could move it out of the house. Maybe I just got a bad one, but this unit is dangerous.

    We have had 3 ice maker failures with our Whirlpool Model WRS555SIHV00 since January, 2020 (service records for January, February and May) with this refrigerator that we purchased in November, 2018. The failure that occurred on May 5, 2020 resulted in tiny bits of sharp plastic falling into the ice bucket and being dispensed into cups that my family then drank from. I discovered two bits of the sharp pieces of plastic in my iced drink last night. Had I swallowed either of them, the damage to my esophagus and digestive system could have been extensive. (I have photos of the broken pieces.) Since all the broken pieces may not have been recovered, I am concerned that the damage may already be occurring. I do not know if the two previous ice maker failures also resulted in plastic bits dropping into the ice bucket. I am writing to alert you that there is a serious design flaw in this Whirlpool model that is potentially dangerous to consumers. A recall of all of these units and replacement with another, comparable model is sought.

It was discovered that the design of the refrigerator freezer door created a pinch point that cut electrical wires. This freaked us out... these are live electrical wires that could electrocute us and our grandkids.

    I complained to Whirlpool without satisfaction - a simple sorry, we can’t do anything for you. I paid $250 to have the refrigerator repaired and it is still not working.

    Whirlpool has a hazardous design flaw and will not resolve or acknowledge the issue. I want the refrigerator gone... returned/replaced with a full refund on the amount paid to date.

    This incident is in reference to my Whirlpool Refrigerator (Model #WRX735SDBM04 Serial#K70818833, purchased 2/28/17 ) I was cleaning the bottom glass shelf of my refrigerator with a wet sponge when it spontaneously shattered for no apparent reason. The entire shelf crumbled and send shards of glass everywhere. I was in complete shock. While cleaning up the shattered shelf I had to pick small glass particles out of my fingers. After searching online I discovered many consumer reviews revealing that this was not an isolated incident that I experienced, rather a quite common occurrence with this particular Whirlpool shelf. I contacted Whirlpool customer service twice and their only response to my concerns was that my appliance was out of warranty and I would have to purchase another shelf. There was no acknowledgement of this spontaneous glass shattering as a valid consumer safety concern.

    Several similar Whirlpool refrigerator models have a defect that causes electrical wires to become severed, causing a fire hazard and preventing the refrigerator from working properly. There are two of these products in our home and both are exhibiting the same issue. The wire bundle connected to the freezer door rubs on a sharp edge each time the freezer door is opened, eventually exposing the wires and cutting them. Our refrigerators were manufactured in August and November of 2017 and the newer one is worse. Another consumer documented the same issue at [REDACTED] and five other consumers found that report useful (i.e., had the same problem). In our case, when the wires were severed, the ice maker stopped working. I called the Whirlpool Customer eXperience (sic) center at 800-253-1301 on 1/6/2020 to identify the hazard and they offered to send a repair technician out at my expense to give me a price quote to fix it. I realize that the refrigerator only had a 1 year warranty, but I’m worried that other consumers think the issue is minor and “just live with” the inconvenience of not having a working ice maker on a $1,300 refrigerator. While these are relatively small wires, they are in close proximity to the highly flammable “dust bunnies” that commonly live under most refrigerators.

    Bought a Whirlpool refrigerator Model # WRS571CIHZ01 on 12/19/19 from BestBuy in Framingham Mass. . Ice dispenser today 12/27 had black plastic pieces in it and cup(drink) I had . I spit out of piece of black plastic and noticed it looked like a piece of zip tie. I then looked at the icemaker and noticed that one of the 2 black zip ties at top of ice maker was broken / missing. I emptied out the ice maker and found additional pieces of the black plastic zip tie at bottom of ice maker with longest piece slightly under an inch. I could not account for the full length of the zip tie ( Should be same as the same length as the other one at the top of the ice maker.) I can only assume that those pieces were swallowed. This refrigerator was a popular model sold this holiday season at both BestBuy, Lowes and Home depot. These pieces of plastic to cause great harm to anyone who drinks a beverage with ice from the freezer. This happening so soon after purchase indicates to me a defective product and the plastic being dangerous if swallowed. Ice make only used in my home since 12/25.

    We purchased a Whirlpool refrigerator 7/25/19. Four days after delivery, 8/1/19, the refrigerator was not functioning properly. One of the five issues this product has is dumping ice all over the floor. My husband woke in the night and went to the kitchen for water. He slipped and fell due to melted ice. His knee swelled and had to have excess water drained by physician. We have had 3 tech visits so far and now are looking at yet another. List of issues are freezer compartment freezing over because gasket isn’t tight (already had this issue fixed once), ice maker dumps ice all over the floor or no ice comes out at all. Inside tempurature of regrigerator is inconsistent either foods are warm or frozen. Home depot and Whirlpool will not refund our money. We are afraid that they will just keep making these bogus repairs until a year is up and the warranty will be over. Every time I call Whirlpool they say they MAY charge for the repair.

    I am very disappointed with Whirlpool. We bought 4 new appliances in November of 2016. While under warranty- the ice maker had to be replaced 2 times. I appreciate that Whirlpool extended my warranty a few more months since it happened twice within a year and I was hesitant it would happen again. But ice maker is not working again- I can deal with that. I can call to get it serviced. But while I was trying to figure out what was wrong- and getting the ice out that was stuck in my ice dispenser... I noticed my ice dispenser and water dispenser both have MOLD growing on them!!! And I have no clue how long it has been there! I am now out of warranty- and understand (sort of- although I think it is BS since it’s been replaced twice) why they won’t fix the ice maker.... but they won’t do anything about the mold. Whirlpool won’t even pay for an $80 service call as a customer courtesy to figure out why there is MOLD!

    I have 5 kids of my own- and provide daycare to a few other children who are not mine. I am liable on any given day for all of these children’s lives who are not mine. God forbid, if something happened to one of them because of the mold- I would be liable. Not to mention if something happened to one of my children. From the Whirlpool Website.....

    My Whirlpool model WRS588FIHW, serial number HR83029196 creates metal shavings ranging in size from pieces the size of a fingernail to tiny pieces like small confetti. We purchased the fridge/freezer combination in October of 2018 and did not notice any problems until June of 2019, but then my wife and I do not routinely use ice.

    I had a glass of ice and water and I noticed the large fragment, the size of a fingernail in it. As I only had ice and water from the fridge, I knew it had to come from the fridge. Subsequent testing found more metal fragments. However, unwisely I discarded them.

    I contacted Whirlpool who sent me to an appliance repair place who sent me back to Whirlpool who has sent me back to the appliance repair place. While that stupidity was going on, I finally collected a great deal of ice via the dispenser, let it melt, and found numerous very small pieces of metal in the bottom of the bowl. I collected these for review.

    This caller is reporting the glass used for the shelves in her refrigerator. July 3rd, 2018 she took the shelf out of her refrigerator and had it laying on the counter top when it slipped it hit her floor and shattered. she said that there is not one piece that is larger than 1/8 of an inch. The glass shattered so wildly that it is at every area of her kitchen. The glass itself is what she is reporting as a laceration and injury hazard because she said that an appliance should not have anything that shatters or disbursed in the matter that the glass shattered. She said that if a child was anywhere near this incident they may have been cut in so many different pieces. She would like for the glass to become more of a tempered matter so that it would not shatter this way.

    Whirlpool refrigerator model gd5thgxk501 serial #sm2925581 built 07/02. Unit started smoking and caught fire on 5/21/17. Unit had no problems or repairs done prior to that. The relay box connected to the compressor was burning. Luckily we were at home when it happened. Opened the unit to turn it off. Lights are circulation fan were still running. It did not trip the circuit breaker. Unplugged the unit to stop the fire. Initial contact at whirlpool said there was no recall for this unit and it should be ok to use. I told her no it can’t be used and she transferred me to their safety department who dispatched a local repair company to inspect it. Unit needed a new relay, compressor and wiring harness. Whirlpool said they wouldn’t pay to fix it due to it’s age and offered to but it from me for $175.00

One glass shelf has shattered sending thousands of pieces of broken glass all over myself and my three year old twins and sending broken glass into food in my fridge. All open food and produce in my fridge had to be thrown away. Luckily I we avoided injury, but there seems to be faulty manufacturing of this model, because it is the first refrigerator I have ever had that has a broken shelf or drawer. Twice I’ve contacted the manufacturer and they have reluctantly replaced broken parts, but now refuse to do so. My biggest concern is for the parts that haven’t broken yet.
