The product, in the report: Refrigerator
My LG Refrigerator - model # LFX25960ST overheated when the interior light stayed on continuously. All food in the refrigerator was spoiled and the interior temperature was well above room temperature, measured with a passive infrared thermometer at 120 degrees farenheit.
The plastic around the light assembly inside the refrigerator is melted beyond repair and the sockets containing two bulbs are discolored from overheating. I removed the light assembly and tested the sockets which feed electricity to the bulbs. Both sockets are ‘hot’ electrically speaking even when the door switch is pushed in. I cannot reconnect the light assembly safely.
I researched the problem online and found that many other consumers reported the same issue.
What can be done to force LG company to repair this issue or require a recall on this obvious safety issue ??

The product, in the report: This is a bottom freezer refrigerator manufactured by LG. It has gray sides and a stainless like finish on the doors
LG Bottom Freezer Refrigerator Model # LFC25760TT
Interior ceiling lights fail to turn off, which led to melting and browning of the light bulb sockets,a burning smell, a warm refrigerator, and blistering of the ceiling above the bulbs. The digital control unit is now held up with duct tape as the brackets melted. We removed the bulbs, leaving our refrigerator in the dark. This is the third, and most serious incident over the past year.

The product, in the report: LG Refrigerator, black, French doors, bottom freezer
The electrical system in our refrigerator was not triggering the fact the doors were closed. This caused the light bulbs to stay on. The plastic holding the light bulbs in and the light sockets were melting. This would have caused a fire had we not been home to notice the burning smell.
The service technician (without seeing the issue), stated the circuit board was not registering the doors were closed. After replacing the parts next week, he stated to put in less wattage appliances bulbs. The bulbs are the original bulbs when the unit was purchased.

The product, in the report: LG refridgerator- bottom drawer freezer & french door fridge.
I thought it was odd when I walked out this morning in the pitch black. It appeared that the center strip between the fridge french door was softly glowing. I pushed on both of the doors and they were indeed closed. Also, it has a door open alarm that beeps after 30 seconds but that never went off. I opened the fridge and noticed a hot plastic smell and the top inside of the fridge was hot. The housing around the fridge light was half-melted and distorted. I unplugged the fridge. The housing was too hot to touch so I left the doors open to evacuate the heat. The freezer was still cold and the bottom of the fridge was still cool, just the top was hot. I suspected the light was the problem since it was all that appeared damaged, so I removed the warped plastic lens and housing and unplugged the light wires. The area above the light had blistered, despite having a metal heat reflector between it and the light. The light bulbs appear to still have filament but I can’t remember if they lit when I opened the fridge. I think they did. Anyway, the bulb receptacles are burnt looking at the top sides of each. I have not touched the bulbs in case they need to be investigated. Thinking I have removed the problem, I plugged the fridge back in to try and salvage our food. It is cooling back down and seems normal, just now there is not a light and we don’t fully trust that the wire that feeds the light is safe. We threw away some groceries that got very warm on the top shelf.

The product, in the report: LG Refrigerator, french door with freezer on bottom.
On July 16, 2014, my LG refrigerator, model LFX21960**, purchased on Sept. 14, 2006 had failed to turn off the lights even though the doors were closed. This melted the inside top of refrigerator lining and the plastic light covering. Due to the heat of the bulbs which were still incredibly hot, he internal temperature was much warmer than it should have been.

The product, in the report: LG French Door Refrigerator model#LFC25760SW
LG refrigerator model#LFC25760SW failed by allowing the interior lights to stay on with the doors closed. This caused the 60w (factory original) bulbs to overheat melting the light casing and the connectors attaching the refrigerator control. The refrigerator control box is now dangling because of this. Had we not smelled the burning plastic emanating from the refrigerator we may not have noticed and surely this would have caused a fire. Researching this problem we found that this model was involved in a class action suit which LG settled back in 2010. Sadly, we were not aware of that or the recall due to the same issue.
As of this posting we have not yet contacted LG to see if they will repair at their cost however regardless of it’s fixed, this remains a dangerous issue and people who still have this product model should be aware.

The product, in the report: Bottom Freezer Refrigerator LG Electronics, Inc. Model number LFX25960SW Serial number: 701KRCF00779
FIRE HAZARD! On May 8, 2014 at approximately 11:55 pm, my wife asked me to come check on a strong burning smell emanating from our LG LFX25960SW Refrigerator. I opened the French doors and was met with a strong smell of something “burning”. I noted that the cheddar cheese on the top shelf was liquefied. The plastic container under it was very hot to touch and was softened. I then noted that the inside lights enclosure was starting to melt and the lights would not go out when you held both door switches closed by hand. The light housing was falling off of the fixture and the screws pulled through the plastic housing when I tried to remove it according to the LG instructions in the LG Guide. The lights were too hot to handle. They were extremely hot. We unscrewed the bulbs with the help of oven mitts. The electrical sockets had begun to discolor from the excessive heat.
Given the condition of the plastic materials that were beginning to melt in this refrigerator, there is no doubt in my mind that if we did not happen to catch this problem and defect tonight, the heat from the lights would have ignited the plastic in the refrigerator and create a fire that may have burned my house down, killed my pets, and possibly my family.
I called the phone number of LG (1-800-243-0000) and asked to talk to the technicians, but they were not available. I was asked to call back tomorrow.

The product, in the report: 3 door stainless steel refrigerator with a drawer freezer
03/10/14- The consumer stated that she sensed a light burning plastic odor coming from her refrigerator. She opened the refrigerator and remove milk from the top shelf. When the consumer ingested the milk she sensed that the it was too warm compared to the temperature setting of the refrigerator. Her husband touched the light bulb casing inside of the unit and noticed that it was hot to the touch. The consumer turned off the internal light bulb switches inside of the refrigerator and the light bulbs would not turn off. She decided to remove the two light bulbs. Once the light bulbs were outside of the refrigerator, she noticed brown stains around the socket of the light bulbs. 3/31/14- The consumer contacted the manufacturer. She was advised that since the refrigerator was out of warranty coverage there would be a $89.00 fee plus cost of repairs for a technician to inspect and repair the refrigerator. The consumer declined the offer. The consumer thinks this product poses a fire or burn hazard .

LG French Door Refrigerator LFX25960ST interior lights will not turn off. Like all the other reports here, I opened the door to find the lens cover melted and hanging down and the bulbs extremely hot. I have contacted LG, but honestly this company needs to be forced to recall and repair these units at their cost. Lights in the refrigerator compartment will not turn off when switches are pressed in,

My fridge developed an bad bitter smell and items were no longer cold, especially on the top shelf. I found that the interior light was not shutting off even when door closed and the bulbs had melted some of the plastic surround and spoiled some of the food. Internet search show this is not an uncommon failure of this fridge. Even pressing the buttons on the doors that shut off the light manually has no effect.

The product, in the report: Black LG French door refrigerator ( model lfc25760sb).
My wife opened the refrigerator in the morning and discovered that the entire top shelf had been superheated and many of the products of melted. The lightbulb unit apparently did not shut off and melted the plastic casing and top portion of the interior plastic lining of the refrigerator. We had to disconnect the lighting unit and are still waiting on a response from the company. This appears to be an extremely unsafe condition given the amount of heat generated over a short span of time.

The product, in the report: LG French door refrigerator
We have an LG French door refrigerator model number LFC25760ST. When I went into the kitchen, I could smell burning plastic. I opened the refrigerator to find the control panel had virtually melted off of the ceiling of the fridge. It was so hot inside the refrigerator that the butter had liquified and melted out of the butter compartment. There were clear scorching marks at the ceiling. I am afraid that if I did not wake up when I did, the fridge would have caught fire. I called LG at 800-243-0000 and notified them of the fire hazard and asked them to escalate within their reporting structure. I’m very concerned for anyone who has this fridge in their house. It is a clear danger.

The product, in the report: LG french door refrigerator, model LFD25860TT, Stainless steel, Ice in bottom, water on door.
LG Refrigerator Model LFD25860TT- Last night I awoke to a terrible burning smell. I went to the kitchen and determined the smell was coming from our LG french door refrigerator. The interior light had stayed on the had melted and fused to the interior ceiling. The interior was so hot all the butter had melted and I had the throw away, half of the contents.
I purchased this item new at R.C. Willey and registered it with LG. When I checked on-line about this issue, I determined there had been a class action settlement, but NO RECALL. Doesn’t the manufacturer have the responsibility to inform the consumer of a potential issue? If not, why? I was unaware of this issue and had never been informed there was a issue with this model. I traveled for work, and I frequently take trips and am away from home for extended periods of time. My home could have burned down! Now I am afraid to leave home because of the refrigerator--that’s NUTS!
As it is now, the interior is ruined! Why no product recall? I contacted LG and they will be sending a technician to see the damage. So, am I left with a refrigerator that will always smell of burned plastic? I purchased this item in good faith. Something should be done to protect consumers.

She has had several service call since purchase (problems started 2/28/11) and no one seems to be able to resolve the issue. She stated that she had fell while trying to open the unit because it was frozen closed.
The most recent contact for the manufacturer was 10/3/13 for a back ordered part which she was informed was discontinued.

The product, in the report: LG Fridge model number LMX 25981 ST FRENCH DOOR WITH 2 FREEZER DRAWERS ON THE BOTTOM.
We bought the LG Refrigerator in September of 2010 and since about 4 months of Sears installing it had nothing but problems. The Ice and Water from the dispensers started to smell of mildew and mold and the taste of the Ice and Water completely changed. We complained to LG and they kept telling us that the water filter is bad and we need to change it. We bought a NEW LG water filter and installed it but No change. We again called LG to complain and they told us to change the filter again. We have so far changed 4 filters at $50 each. Finally,LG Service comes to our home and charges us $75 for the visit plus Tax. The Tech has put in the report to LG and we are waiting for a decision. All this has been going on since about 3 years!

Refrigerator inside lights didn’t turn off when door was closed. Lights got so hot they melted the plastic housing around the lights. I had to unscrew the light housing so I could disconnect the wiring. Luckily we were home at the time and could smell the plastic melting. I am convinced that this could have easily started a fire if we were not home at the time. I contacted the manufacturer via internet chat on their website. They told me it was covered under a special service bulletin. They scheduled a repair company to come out and repair the problem.

June 8, 2013: LG Refrigerator Model Number LFX25960ST
Refrigerator light does not go off when the doors are closed. The heat melted the plastic that shrouds the two appliance light bulbs. The heat melted the top (interior) of the refrigerator, and began to melt the sockets that hold the two light bulbs.
I disconnected the lighting unit from the refrigerator to avoid further damage and reported the incident to the manufacturer (LG).
For reference my serial number is: 609KRMK00579.
Researching this issue, it appears to be a common occurrence with these units. The heat, melted butter and chocolate that was stored in my refrigerator, and spoiled other items. This is a serious condition, the bulbs were so hot when I removed them they burned through the protective gloves I was wearing, the CPSC should consider making LG recall these products.

The product, in the report: LG French Door Refrigerator 25 Cubic Foot
We woke up smelling a burning plastic smell and determined it was coming from our LG refrigerator. We found that the lighting assembly in the top compartment was hot with discolored plastic, melted components and bubbled plastic. The refrigerator also had stopped cooling sometime in the night.
On investigation, we found that the compressor was not operating, but that the light was staying on even with the door switches both depressed. This resulted in increased heating to the small PC board in the lighting compartment. It also has controls for the cooling.
Pictures were taken of the units as well as the product nameplate. We had to replace the refrigerator. We were not able to fully navigate the manufacturer’s website, but we did determine the unit was produced in 2007, sold to us initially on 1-16-2008 and the unit had a 5 year warranty from the date of purchase. So the warranty expired earlier this year (4 months ago).
My concern, had we not been home, that the standard lighting in the unit could have started a fire and caused major loss to the home.

(05/07 /2013) In late evening the consumer stated that he emptied his wife’s glass of water that she was drinking during the evening. The consumer stated that he filled a glass of water for him and his wife. The next morning, after drinking water during the night, he discovered that his glass of water had plastic in it. On further inspection he discovered plastic in the sink where he had poured out the water from his wife’s glass the evening before. He also inspected garbage disposal, which had not been run and found additional a shaving of plastic. The consumer stated that the pieces of plastic came from the ice maker in the refrigerator’s freezer. The ice maker dumps the ice into the ice bin and the ice bin then grinds the ice and dumps into the glass upon demand. The ice presses against the plastic sides of the ice bin as it dumps the broken ice into the drinking glass. Apparently the pressure against the plastic from grinding the ice, breaks the plastic which falls into the drinking glass. The consumer stated that he inspected the ice bin and discovered where the bin plastic was broken; there was also some type of film or frozen dust over the area. (5/08/2013) The consumer contacted LG and talked to [REDACTED] (spelling?). I was instructed to call a technician at 810-736-3042. He called Kearslui Appliance and explained the problem. He advised them that LG had referred him to them. He was told that there would be an $85.00 plus parts charge unless he received a LG purchase order. He called LG back and spoke to Ms [REDACTED] and asked for a purchase order as this was a product failure and safety problem. He was told by [REDACTED] the unit was past warranty and he would be liable for any repairs. He again asked if they had any policy for product failure or safety and was told “The product was past warranty”
The refrigerator has a water filter and it has been changed every 6 months as required. This question was asked on first phone call.

I own a LG french door refrigerator that was about to catch on fire this morning. The inside lights at the top failed to shut off with the doors closed and the lights were so hot in the morning they caused black and brown charred marks on the refrigerator and the plastic was melting. The temperature was at 90 degrees and almost all the food was spoiled and some was even cooked from the heat. This is very unsafe and could have caused a fire in my home. After much research, this seems to be a recurring problem with this brand and LG has failed to recall the refrigerator or be responsible for their faulty products!

This incident has been ongoing for the past 6 years. The refrigerator occasionally stayed warm which caused her food to spoil. She has had to remove the bulbs to prevent this incident.
The caller stated that she has contacted the manufacturer about 15 months after using the refrigerator and followups to those emails but she has not received any responses.
The retailer was contacted and she inquired if there was a special bulb to use, she was advised that it was just a regular bulb. They informed her once the unit left their property it became the manufacturer’s problem.
The caller feels that this refrigerator is unsafe and should be reported.

The product, in the report: Refrigerator LG Model No LFX21960ST
Dear Madam or Sir:
I am writing to draw your attention to an incident that occurred in my house toward the end of last year with melting of a lamp inside the refrigerator LG Model No LFX21960ST.
I woke up to burning smell emanating from the kitchen area of the house. Upon inspecting the kitchen, I found that the burning odor was coming from the refrigerator. As I opened the door, the refrigerator was very warm inside, products have gone bad, but most importantly the lamp inside the fridge was lit for an extended period of time, was not turning off when the door is closed, and the plastic casing around the lamp was soft and melted. The melting process began to penetrate the inside top casing of the fridge.
My primary concern is that virtually a week later, my family was scheduled to leave for a vacation. If this incident were to happen during our trip, this lamp problem could have led to a fire. While I acknowledge that the manufacturer repaired the defect promptly by replacing the lamp kit and was quite cooperative, I am concerned that there may be other families that have the same refrigerator, potentially putting their lives and property at risk. In addition, the manufacturer’s telephone representative indicated they have been getting many calls about the same issue but no instances of fire had occurred so far.
I would urge you to reach out to both the manufacturer and households across the country to proactively replace either the lamps or the refrigerators altogether! A recall has to take place!
A brief internet research revealed a number of complaints on the similar issue, http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=7190512 – a KLS 5 News investigation, all of which seem to point at potential risk to property and people’s lives if such malfunction occurs while home owners are away.

The lights in the refrigerator turned on over night while the doors were closed, melting the plastic housing that covers the lights, spoiling the food in fridge. The lights were hot enough to melt the butter in the butter tray into a liquid. This is a known issue with LG. My parents had the same fridge with the same problem a few years ago. When this happened to them, I contacted LG and was told “until it happens to you, we can’t do anything about it”. Well now it’s happened and fortunately for us, we were home. There was a class action lawsuit which just closed in November 2012. For us it’s not about the money but the unsafe refrigerator and the danger of a possible fire. Anyone that owns this refrigerator should be contacted about the danger.

[REDACTED] @ light fixture LG 3 door Refrigerator Model LFX25960SW. Could not define terrible odor in refrigerator until realized that everything on the top shelf was HOT, and lower shelves were decreasingly less hot. The two-bulb light fixture was still lighted, but then realized that it was severely melted and charred; further inspection determined that manually depressing the two buttons on refrigerator at the top of the door did not put out the lights. Therefore the lights possibly were possibly burning continuously from probably about January 4th, 2013.
Prior to determining the cause of the odor, because it was there, but a very a weak smell, we became violently ill from cheesecake on a mid shelf during the night of January 4th-5th. Presuming that the cheesecake was not properly refrigerated at the bakery, we threw it away. Our grandchild became ill from freshly dated milk on the lowest refrigerator shelf on January 5th, 2013. After our grandchild became ill from the milk, we still did not determine the cause until the next morning, January 6th, 2013. Upon opening the refrigerator I smelled the intense burned and scorched odor. Inspection then led us to the two-bulb light fixture, which by then was deformed and smokey. [REDACTED] Needless to say, we HAD to throw away everything on the three shelves above the crispers, and thecrisper vegetables were warm and beginning to deteriorate requiring disposal also.

The product, in the report: LG french door refrigerator with bottom drawer freezer. Stainless Steel.
The light mechanism in our LG French door refrigerator (model number LFC25760ST) malfunctioned. The lights (2 60 watt bulbs) remained on over night even though the refrigerator doors were closed. The bulbs have a metal reflector above them that heated to the point that it melted the plastic housing, melted a tub of butter on the top shelf and toasted 3 full loaves of bread. The only way to get the lights to turn off was to remove them, however they were way too hot. Removing the screws that held the housing in place revealed that the plastic inside was soft to the touch. We unplugged the lights entirely to break the circuit and prevent further damage and/or potential risk of fire.
We did report the issue to the manufacturer who informed us they were aware of issues like this with our model and several others. A technician is scheduled to come out. Not sure why if this is such a known issue and so many models are affected, why there hasn’t been a recall issued.

I have an LG refrigerator, model number: LFX25960SW approx. 3-4 years old. A few minutes ago while putting groceries away; we noticed a strong smell of burning plastic. I noticed an extreme amount of heat coming from the light fixture at the top of the interior of the refrigerator, and the products on the top shelf were basically lukewarm. I went to take the cover off the light fixture and the seal was somewhat melted in places. When I got the cover off I was able to see that the light bulb sockets for both light bulbs had turned dark brown on the upper half of the sockets from the heat. I have no doubt that if we had not been at home, the refrigerator would have caught on fire within a very short time. I have pictures of the light sockets showing how discolored they are from the heat.

The product, in the report: This is a Stainless Steel 3 Door Refrigerator with Double French Doors over a Bottom Freezer.
Our LG refrigerator’s interior light overheated and melted the plastic exterior housing due to a failure in the lights not shutting off once the doors were closed. (model LFX25960ST purchased in 2006). I discovered this after noticing a buring smell, and when I opened the doors the Plastic housing was sagged and visibly melted. I removed the housing (due to the heat/melting it slipped right off), and the area around the bulbs was charred, and the aluminum mount, and bulbs were too hot to touch. With Gloves I was able to barely unscrew the right side bulb and the left wouldn’t budge, and exploded (resulting in a small shock and burn). This was probably due to expansion due to the high heat. The top interior refrigerator walls were also melted and in one spot was near driping onto the aluminum plate. This posed the greatest fire hazard along with the charred bulb housings. I am contacting LG today regarding a repair. In the mean time, from what I have read, their response and customer service is terrible. It appears there was a class action suit regarding this (or the same issue impacting other models) with the only outcome being a fix that addressed the symptom (enabled the lights to go off with the door shut), but did not address the cause (a defect in the circuit board programming). Making the likelyhood and potential for damage or fire repeatable. The only other item worth noting is LG’s scripted and automated response received on this forum to the multitude of similar claims. This further demonstrates the lack of action or concern on behalf of the company.

I own an LG Bottom Freezer Refrigerator, model LFD22860. Yesterday evening it caught on fire. We were alerted by the smells of foods cooking in the kitchen as well as burning smells. The plastic lightbulb housing/cover was destroyed... melted through and hanging down, melting and cooking the foods on the top shelf of my fridge. After some investigating I found the lights are not shutting off when the doors are completely closed as they are supposed to. I’ve had to remove the lights entirely. I will be contacting LG next.

The product, in the report: Bottom Freezer Refrigerator, Model # LFX25960TT, Serial # 701KRJU00628
23 August 2012
Dear Mr. [REDACTED]:
I own an LG Bottom Freezer Refrigerator, Model # LFX25960TT, Serial # 701KRJU00628, which was manufactured in January 2007. On August 21, 2012, we experienced an electrical fault with the refrigerator internal lighting controls. The lights failed to shut off when the door was closed. This failure resulted in sufficient heat to char the internal lamp holder and cause plastic securing the light fixture to the refrigerator internal casing to melt. This resulted in acrid and poisonous fumes which permeated the entire refrigerator and its contents. After securing power to the refrigerator, we contacted LG who advised us that they would correct the electrical fault and replace the light fixture. This initially appeared to be a reasonable solution to our specific situation. However, during discussions with the repair facility we learned that this is a problem with this specific refrigerator model and that the fault has reoccured after the repair. The repair facility also informed us that this model refrigerator had been subject to a RECALL. Consequently, we re-contacted LG on August 22 and asked them if this model refrigerator had been subject to a RECALL and told them we had never received a RECALL notice. LG informed us that the refrigerator had not been subjected to a RECALL but that the specific electrical fault was an ISSUE. In light of the fact that the electrical fault associated with the internal lighting controls can continue to occur on this model refrigerator, even after repair, and the heat generated by this failure is sufficient to char the lamp holder, melt the plastic securing the light holder to the refrigerator internal casing, and result in acrid and poisonous fumes permeating the refrigerator and spreading to the kitchen upon opening the refrigerator door, it is hard to understand why LG has not issued a voluntary RECALL and the CPSC has not caused LG to issue a RECALL for this model refrigerator.
Sincerely [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: LG French door refrigerator Model # LFX21960ST SN - 708KRVQ01095
My LG French door refrigerator 2 days ago had both lights not go on when I opened the door. In addition, the external ambient temperature indicator tonight reflected a temperature of 97 degrees, although the room temperature was 75 degrees. When I attempted to try and remove the plastic cover over the lights, it was so hot I couldn’t touch it, even though the lights were off. A little later I opened the doors again, and the lights came on. When I attempted to turn them off by pressing in both buttons, nothing happened. A little later, the lights were off again, but still quite warm, although the door had been closed. The ambient temperature went down to 93 degrees where it remained. The top of the refrigerator is quite warm as well.
I went online to see if I could find any information, and discovered a whole slew of comments and complaints about this same issue, stretching back several years. In some cases, the plastic light cover had melted sending noxious fumes out. Repeated comments indicated LG was not responsive nor cooperative to consumer complaints. One of the comments mentioned a class action. When I searched that online, I found that indeed there was a settlement of the class action case involvinng the same issue this past March, 2012.
I have not been notified of the class action, nor of the potential problem, and LG has still not ordered a recall for this problem. I registered my product, and I know LG is aware that I have the refrigerator as they send me a check each year because they misrepresented the energy costs indicated on it when I bought it.
I find it appalling that something as serious as a potential fire hazard has not resulted in a recall, even after a class action settlement for this very same issue. This is callous disregard for consumer safety.

LG 3 door refrigerator light cause melting of plastic and might cause fire. I have model number lfc25760sw serial number 703kruc01238 manufacture date of 2007 that the light failed to turn off in the refrigerator top section. It was only discovered when the door was opened and a strong smell of plastic burning or melting. From further investigation it was noticed the light housing had drooped and was hot to the touch. The unit has 2x 60 watt incandescent light bulbs. I worked the door switches that would turn off the digital temp display and lights. The display would turn off every time where the lights would turn off only few of the times.
I contacted LG WHO STATED THEY WERE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM and would send a service tech to the house to repair the issue for free.
I am pleased LG is taking care of the issue, my only concern that I was not made aware of the issue until I had the problem. My concern is that consumers should be made aware of the issue before a fire occurs.

Caller’s daughter opened the refrigerator approximately one week ago, sometime around June 11th, 2012 and saw smoke coming from around the light fixture. Amount of smoke was moderate but the smell of burning plastic was heavy.
The light bulbs became so hot they melted the plastic around the lights.
Caller contacted LG immediately, connected with service who advised to disconnect the light bulbs due to high intensity light bulbs heating, not cooling down and causing fire.
Service came to home June 12th, 2012 replaced defective light bulbs and the piece in the refrigerator that did not turn off which caused the burning/melting. Service was not from manufacturer due to their statements that they couldn’t get anywhere for repairs for two weeks so callers contacted their own repair shop.
Caller never received a recall notice. Caller called manufacturer three times and was not satisfied with their service.
Caller would like the public made aware and would like for this model to be added to recall.

The product, in the report: This concerns an LG three door refrigerator with bottom freezer. Purchased Oct 2006 from American in Madison WI Model :LRFC22750ST Concern: possible house fire or danger from combusting plastics On 4/27 in the morning we awoke to the smell of electrical “burning” or plastic melting but could not isolate it. Upon opening the refrigerator we found the light fixture in the top/center of the refrigerator melted and charred (actually bubbled and looking like toasted marshmallows) and several food items (butter, cream) hot or melted/curdled. The entire light unit is so disfigured that it is pushed away from the “ceiling” of the refrigerator and we are unsure if it can be repaired. We can see that plastic is dripped and actually fused to one of the small light bulbs and it is possible that the interior wall of the refrigerator is melted. Ironically when we purchased this unit, friends told us of another purchaser who had had the light unit burn and melt, totally destroying the unit. We thought it was an exageration or an isolated incident. Now we see what they experienced.

The product, in the report: Black LG French door Refrigerator with bottom freezer. Model No. LFC25760SB 25 cubic feet.
Purchased LG refrigerator model LFC25760SB in July 2006. Didn’t have any problems until a few months ago when the lights went out in the refrigerator. At first we thought it was the bulb(s), but we tested them and they were fine. As our warranty expired we decided to live without the lights since my husband figured it was a circuit problem and sometimes the lights would come on when we opened the door(s) and calling for and paying for a service call especially if it seemed to work at that particular time would be a warrentless expense of a lot of money since we are seniors and live on a fixed income. Now, after a couple of months the lights returned on and everything seemed fine. Once in awhile they would go out when the door(s) opened. Then today April 26, 2012, when we returned home from food shopping, I opened the doors to put the food away and the first thing was a strong electrical burning odor. The inside of the refrigerator was warm, the lights were on and smoke was coming from the area around them. My husband pushed in on the switch that depresses when the doors are closed and that did not shut the lights off. My husband then proceeded to take down the plastic that was covering the light area, burned his hand, and then we got a pot holder and unscrewed the light bulbs. If we had been gone another hour or so who knows what would have happened. I am sure all my food would have had to be thrown out not to mention the melting of the top of the refrigerator or even worse an electrical fire that could have burned down my home!

We purchased a new LG refrigerator 3 years ago, model number LFX25960ST. Last night I came home and immediately smelled an acrid burning smell. When I opened the door the interior light had melted and sagged inside the unit, and the light sockets were burned black. All of the food in the unit was warm and ruined, but my biggest concern is the fire hazard to my home. LG is quietly offering to repair the refrigerator, but frankly having this hazard in my home scares me to death. I need to get a refund in order to replace this $3000 death trap. PLEASE get me and the MANY others who are having this horrible experience the relief that we deserve. Sincerely, [REDACTED]

He would like his refrigerator repaired to avoid this happening again but moreover would like the public to be aware of the potential issue.

The product, in the report: LG French Door Refrigerator with freezer on bottom.
We purchased an LG LFC25760SB french door refrigerator in May of 2007. This past Friday (April 13, 2012) my wife opened the door and noticed the cream cheese container in the top door was very warm. She also noticed a burning smell. Upon further inspection, we noticed that the entire housing for the light which is mounted to the ceiling had started melting, particularly through the front screw holes and was hanging from the ceiling. The unit has an alarm which beeps (annoyingly) to alert you if the door is opened, but this alert was not sounding so I know the door was closed, but apparently (after doing some research) the light remains on, causing heat build-up to occur.
We had been planning to leave on vacation that day and she just happened to go into the refrigerator to make a quick bite to eat before we left. I can only imagine what would have happened had we left without checking it and left the refrigerator in this state.
We unplugged it and ordered a new (Non-LG) refrigerator which will be delivered tomorrow. After doing some research, it appears that there is actually a class-action lawsuit for the same exact model as mine except the last two designators are SW, not SB.

Lights had partially melted the top of a yogurt container. Inside plastic on the top of the unit was hot to the touch and burning plastic odor permeated all. Smoke damage inside. Went to the basement and tripped the breaker to shut off electricity to unit.
LG instructed me to remove the light bulbs and they would arrange repair, covering parts and labor. They had my contact information in their database but never contacted me to notify me that there is a problem with this unit, which is troubling. It seems likely from the amount of commentary on the internet about this problem that the problem is well known to them. The unit is a LG LFC25760SW with serial number beginning with 704. The temp display at the top of the fridge that also houses the 2 60watt light bulbs had completely melted away from the top of the fridge and is just dangling from a couple wires. The product, in the report: Three Door Refrigerator
I have an LG refrigerator model # LFX25960ST. The light started staying on, even with the door closed. This is causing an overheated condition within the refrigerator which can catch on fire. As I researched the problem I find that many other individuals are experiencing the same problems, some with devastating results, having caused fires.
When I tried to find out about product recalls I could find none, and LG is notably quiet about any recalls. They do not show anything. If there are this many people are experiencing the same or similar issues, I believe something must be done to protect those of us, and others, that may be exposed to this potential life threatening equipment failure.
LG has agreed to send a service rep next week, therefore I removed the bulbs, and hopefully this does not create another issue with a short or other electrically related problem.

The product, in the report: Black LG fridge
Came home from dinner to notice that my LG Fridge model LFC25760SB was warm inside and smelled of melting plastic. The two lights on the top of the fridge were extremely hot and had completely melted the housing that encloses them. The housing was hanging down almost 2 inches as the retaining screws had melted through the plastic holding it in. The plastic is turning brown from smoke and the entire surface of the top of the fridge is warped from the massive amount of heat generated. It is frightful to think that had I been gone longer there could have been a fire.
There is a buzzer that warns you of an open door which was not in operation upon my return and the doors were shut. This is a very serious defect that could have cost someone their home or their life. After some research on the internet I found many others with similar problems.

The product, in the report: LG LFC25760SB
LG refrigerator model: LFC25760SB Purchased new, delivered and installed on 10-MAY-2007.
Around November 2008, notice a burning plastic smell coming from fridge. Opening the fridge revealed melting plastic on the inside top of fridge. The lightbulbs were remaining on when the doors were closed, releasing tremendous heat over time. Fridge was unplugged, and the bulbs removed. This is a FIRE HAZARD. Contacted LG, they said warranty was past, and would have to pay to have technician take a look at it.
With the bulbs removed, the fridge can cool the food. The plastic guard that covers the lights was partially melted and would not hold into place anymore. The entire ‘microchip’ area at the top of the fridge is sagging down a bit. The lightbulb sockets are now exposed (because the guard is broken), so now is an electotrocution hazard as an unwary person could put their finger in it accidentally.
From reading on the internet, the lights failing to turn off appears to be a common defect on these models. Take this off the market before someone gets killed.
The ice cube maker also broke, around JULY-2008 (right after the warranty period), but doesn’t appear to pose a physical threat.

The product, in the report: LG Model LFC25760ST Refrigerator, French door with freezer on bottom
On Friday October 21, 2011at approximately 7 PM, my husband, [REDACTED], noted the smell he described as ’burning candles’ in our kitchen. At the time, we were unable to locate the source of the smell, but it persisted. At approximately 8 PM, I went to get a soda from our LG Model Number LFC2570ST refrigerator. The soda was on the top shelf. Not only was the soda not cold, it was warm to the touch. Some investigation revealed that some other items on the top shelf were also unusually warm. Further, it appeared that the warmest items were located closed to the light/thermostat assembly in the top of the refrigerator unit.
Further investigation revealed that the refrigerator light was not going off when the door was closed and considerable heat was coming from the light bulbs. I decided to remove the light bulbs for the time being to correct the situation until we could have a service person look at the refrigerator. When I tried to pull the plastic cover off the bulbs, however, the entire thermostat assembly came down. I inspected the screw areas around the assembly and found that the plastic near the metal screws had melted. After the assembly was down I was able to remove the light bulb cover. I found that the sockets holding the light bulbs were discolored and looked burned. The light bulbs were too hot to remove even with gloves, so I unplugged the refrigerator and placed a container of ice underneath the bulbs and waited about ten minutes for the bulbs to cool down (one came out easily, but the other required significant force to remove). I was unable to replace the thermostat assembly because of the melted screw holes, so I replaced the plastic cover for the light bulbs and used electricians’ tape to hold the assembly in place temporarily.
The next day my husband went on-line and found an account of an incident similar to ours that occurred with the same model LG refrigerator. The web address for this account is:
http://wizbandit.wordpress.com/2008/08/01/lg-fridge-turns-into-easy-bake-oven-family-escapes-fire/
I am concerned because I believe that this situation, if undetected, could have resulted in a fire. The inside of the refrigerator is all plastic and the fumes from even a small fire could have caused serious injury. In addition, the problem was subtle: if I had not gotten a drink before going to bed, we would not have discovered the problem before the situation became worse. We purchased a new refrigerator and had the old one removed, but I Have attached pictures of the burned sockets and melted plastic.
Thank you for any attention you can give this issue. If you would like to contact me by phone, I can be reached at [REDACTED]. Sincerely,
[REDACTED]

The product, in the report: LG Bottom Freezer Refrigerator Stainless Steel.
The mechanism that turns the lights off in our LG Bottom Freezer Refrigerator malfunctioned and the 2 sixty watt bulbs (that came in the refrigerator) remained on even with the doors fully closed. The shield over the bulbs started to melt and is all warped. The sockets started to burn. It hadn’t been very long - maybe 1 hour, 45 minutes or less before the problem was found. There was a burning smell in the kitchen and I found the problem by following the smell. The refrigerator was warm and even a loaf of bread on the top shelf was hard as if it had been toasted. We removed both bulbs and have called someone in to repair it.

The product, in the report: Refrigerator double door w/bottom freezer
Consumer stated that he opened up the refrigerator and discovered that the plastic casing around the light had melted and the sockets were discolored. The temperature inside was extremely warm. He was able to remove the damged plastic casing and the lights to prevent further damages. This was the first time this incident had occurred.
Consumer stated that the refrigerator is operating without the light bulb at this time.
Consumer had not contacted the manufacturer as yet.
Consumer is concerned that this refrigerator poses a fire hazard and should be reported.
UPDATE: Consumer contacted LG at 800-243-0000 and explained the problem to its customer service representative. They said the repair would be made at no cost to him- the service company is a home tech service at 570-822-2000. He contacted them about 10/25 and they were aware of the problem but had not received authorization from LG to proceed. After about 3-4 more phone calls, they received authorization to proceed on the problem. The first thing they have to do is order the parts. As of 11/9/2011, they hadn’t received the parts (he had made 4 phone calls to check on where the parts were). (he just called again-recording on office hrs etc).
Once again, the parts aren’t in and his appointment for repair hasn’t been scheduled. From the info on the internet, this seems to be a pretty common problem. He is a retired enginerr from IBM where he had product responsibilities. It is very difficult for him to understand why this product wasn’t recalled because of this serious problem. If this occured while they were away, a fire could have easily happened that could have burned the house down. I don’t think LG takes this situation as seriously as they should under these circumstances.
Some of their design procedures are very questionable. They solder a fuse intro a fuse holder on the control board. If the fuse blows, the replacement part is the entire control board and not the fuse. This makes no sense at all- a fuse costs about $2 while the control board is probably $150 or so.

The product, in the report: 3 Door Stainless Steel Finish Refrigerator
Returning home, I opened my refrigerator and noticed that the top shelf of food products were warm to the touch and the shelf was very hot. I double checked that when both door light switches were depressed that the light remained on. I confirmed my suspicions that the switches were bad by firmly closing both doors (side-by-side style) and returning 5 minutes later and that the shelf had not cooled in the least bit. I unplugged the refrigerator and waited until the light fixture and bulbs were cool enough to handle and promptly removed both bulbs. 10/06/11
This is the 2nd major problem with this refrigerator. Although not a safety hazard, the water supply line to the icemaker would freeze because it was routed in front of the freezing cold air vent that cooled the refrigerator. A Sears repairman came out and it worked for a very short while before it re-froze. We have lived without the icemaker ever since.

Removed the fixture and bulbs to avoid any additional problems. Will call vendor Monday.

I’m going to leave out the details that are not life threatening, seals and crisper covers breaking and falling off. About 2 years ago, I opened the fridge to make breakfast, only to find the interior of the fridge EXTREMELY warm. The unopened package of hot dogs were cooked through. The roast, almost at the bottom of the fridge, was cooked through. I found the two light bulbs on top were hot and melted their protective cover. The casings around the bulbs were charred from the excesive heat. It seems the lights were staying on even while the doors were closed. I unscrewed them so they could not light up or get hot any more. Since that time the fridge has been getting progressively worse. Now it will stop working all together and the digital lights on the front will show 88 instead of the correct temperature. Other times it will freeze everything in the fridge and will again show 88s across the board. Each time it eithers tops working or gets super cold, it beeps. The only way we can get it to stop and correct itself is by unplugging it for a while, then plugging it back in. At first it didn’t happen too often, but it has gotten progressively worse. Now we have to unplug it several times a week and just recently had to start unplugging it several times a day. I am not the only consumer who has had these problems. I found the trick of unplugging and plugging back in on the internet, where many other LG owners were having the same problems and sharing. LG has recalled many models, but this one does not seem to be on their list. Even though, this fridge is just as bad, if not worse than the ones they have recalled. Seems outrageous that they are not taking responsibility for selling a defective appliance, an appliance that is a fire hazard.
It worries me when I’m at work, not knowing if it’s going to overheat while the house is empty. Or when we are sleeping.

Refridgerator light stopped shutting off when doors are closed nor when you push the button that controls the light. Came down stairs this morning to the smell of burning plastic, opened the doors to fridge and it was extremely hot in there and in the freezer. The plastic around the bulbs, the light encasement as well as the liner of the fridge around the light are all brown and burned. The food in both the fridge and freezer were melted and spoiled. My husband had to unplug the it and wait a while before he was able to, with two sets of oven mitts, unscrew the bulbs. I contacted the store that I purchased the product from and they said we are not the first to complain and they gave me all the information that I needed to contact LG. I contacted LG and they said they would send out a service person to replace the parts, I said that wasn’t good enough and I told them that the store told us we were not the first to complain and asked why the product was not recalled and the guy said he knows nothing about recalls. An outside service person contacted us to say that he is ordering parts, and when my husband questioned why he didn’t need to come and see the fridge first to see what needed to be ordered his response was that they have been getting a ton of service calls on this and that the issue was the relay board, light assembly, etc. I think that if we weren’t home we may have had a fire.

RE: LG Refrigerator Freezer on the bottom Model # LFC25760TT
Before we went to bed, we smelled something burning in the kitchen. Upon opening the frig door we saw that the light bulbs in the control console were melting all the surrounding structures and the interior of the frig was warm, the top shelf was hot. The control console had dropped down tilting to the right being held by one support structure which had not yet melted through.
We shut off the power and took down the light cover and removed the bulbs. We have reported to the manufacturer and to Home Depot where we bought it in 2007. The refrigerator is only 4 years old and was expensive.

The refrigerator is located in a vacation home and the consumer’s daughter and son in law went to the home and when they opened the refrigerator they noticed a horrible electrical/plastic burning odor.
After careful observation they noticed that the housing that surrounded the light bulb had melted around the light bulb and the light bulb was powered in the on position.
The consumer’s daughter used a drying towel to carefully removed the light bulb from the plastic melted housing. The consumer indicated that he safely believes that the lights stayed powered in the on position while the refrigerator doors were closed.
The firm was contacted via email on 8/22/2011 and the consumer has not received a response at this current time.
The consumer indicated that he isn’t sure if he will allow any repairs to be made on the appliance and he will continue to use the refrigerator without any light bulbs inside.

LG Refrigerator Model LFC21760ST Purchased 2007
The lights inside of refrigerator failed to turn off when door was closed, remained on overnight, and overheated causing the light assembly and control unit to melt and fall from its mounting. So much heat was generated that the top inside liner of the appliance bubbled and other plastic parts warped. Eggs that were stored one shelf below were too hot to touch and all food had to be thrown away. Had our daughter not discovered this before leaving the house the following morning I believe the unit would have caught on fire.
Even though it is no longer in warranty, LG is willing to provide limited repairs for what they deem to be a faulty light switch on the main circuit board. They admitted that other consumers have experienced this same problem, yet we never did receive any notification from them of a potential hazard (we registered this appliance on their website immediately after purchase).

The product, in the report: LG French Door Refrigerator
In late 2007, I purchased an LG French Door Refrigerator (model# LFC25760SB). I immediately had problems with this unit...the freezer wasn’t staying cold enough to keep ice frozen and the refrigerator was staying too cold and was freezing the food. It was still under warranty, so it was able to be repaired at no additional costs to me. Recently, I’ve found that the interior light in the refrigerator wouldn’t come on. I thought this was odd, and I noticed a weird smell. When I touched the lighting unit I discovered that it was very hot to the touch!! Concerned that the lights weren’t shutting off when the doors were shut, I began video on my cell phone and put it on the top shelf of the fridge. I shut the door, waited several moments, opened the door and reviewed the video. The lights were not shutting off when the doors were closed, causing them to overheat and shut down randomly. When I called LG to report this problem, they informed me that this was an ongoing issue and that my specific model was on their list of refrigerators that were having this issue. Further research online showed that I am not the only one with this problem and I found myself to be lucky that I caught this in time. Had I not discovered this problem, there was potential of the unit catching fire, causing serious damage to my home or even death. Being this is a known issue, I would think that LG would have sent out a recall to their customers offering a fix. In this case I feel it would be beneficial to be proactive, instead of them waiting for customers to find their refrigerator melting or on fire. As it currently stands, I have taken the bulbs out of the unit and I am waiting for a repairman to come to my home and fix the unit.

The product, in the report: French Door Bottom Freezer Refrigerator 32x34x69
LG refrigerator lights stay on even when the door is closed. This causes a large amount of heat that actually blackened the bulb receptacles. I noticed a burning smell when I opened the refrigerator, so I luckily caught the problem before it burnt my LG refrigerator. I have since removed the light bulbs and will be getting the problem repaired. I did an internet search and noticed other consumers with LG refrigerators have had the same problem. My LG refrigerator model# is LFD22860SW with serial number 607MRRH00262

The product, in the report: LG LFC25760SW Refrigerator with freezer on bottom
When I opened my LG refrigerator (LFC25760SW) last night I smelled something burning. I closed the door and reopened and the smell was worse. I immediately unplugged the fridge to avoid a fire. The light unit was extremely hot and melting away from the refrigerator frame. After emptying the refrigerator I plugged it back in to see if the lights would turn off. They did not. That caused the melting and near fire. I researched online and found out it was probably a relay switch. Called LG first thing this morning, they were pleasant to deal with and said they would pay for parts and service and send out a tech. This was regardless of the fact that the unit was past the 1 year warranty.
The technician came out this afternoon from Fedder’s Co in North Hollywood, CA. [REDACTED]. The tech, never checked the problem, he took apart the unit and removed the stickers. Then decided it was fine after jiggling a few wires. I explained the severity of the heat to him, but he laughed at me and said “it’s no danger”......I find this absurd. He also argued with me for 10 minutes about the housing unit that had melted last night telling me it was fine and looks right; even though the unit was not straight, nor flush and obviously melted from the issue. He was adamant there was no issue, but that he would order a new plastic unit. This is NOT the issue. The fire hazzard is the issue and he failed to address that.
If LG did not feel this was an issue why would they pay for parts and labor for an out of warranty refrigerator? There is obviously an issue that either Fedder’s or LG is trying to cover up. [REDACTED]. I called LG back and that is the only repair facility they have that will service my area. I am now on a list for their team to try and find another repair tech to address the issue. LG has been good to deal with, but they should specify to the company what the issue is that caused this so they could fix it without wasting my time. I am now without a refrigerator and freezer and a full can of spoiled food products.

The product, in the report: LG refrigerator model number LRFC22750TT bottom freezer refrigerator. Serial number 506MRCJ00875.
My LG LRFC22750TT refrigerator’s lights stayed on when the doors were closed and the plastic casing where the lights reside and where other controls and displays are, melted from the heat generated by the light bulbs. Only in retrospect and after touching the light bulbs we realized what the problem was. The plastic casing is now hanging by a thread. I unscrewed the light bulbs to prevent a fire or other major catastrophe. Checking the internet I found out that this is a well known problem with LG refrigerators that has been reported to LG and to your agency. However, there has not been a recall of this product or a notification to the consumers that own this product that this can happen which is very disconcerting as this is a major flaw that can lead to fires and even deaths.

The product, in the report: LFX25960ST French Door, Bottom Freezer Fridge w/water and icemaker
We purchased our fridge in August of 2007 for $2000.00 @ Home Depot. LFX25960ST. On July 13th 2011, we noticed a strong electrical smell coming from our fridge. When examining the odor we discovered that the lights in the fridge were not turning off and had melted the light housing, burned the bulb housings, and the plastic cover was so hot we needed potholders to remove the cover to get to the 2 bulbs to remove them. The plastic around the light housing itself was so hot that I was able to push the melted plastic up with my fingers in a pot holder.
I am glad that I found the problem as I was headed out for a week of vaca and Im positive this would have caught on fire. The plastic cap on a food product that was under the light was also too hot to touch and remove. Thats how hot the entire light housing unit was.
One month out of warranty on this fridge....Sept. 2008, the ice maker would work intermittently. LG was no help what so ever. Their customer service is horrible. I will never purchase one of their products again.

Hurt, no treatment Made Jun 21, 2011, published by CPSC Jul 13, 2011
The product, in the report: LG Stainless Steel 3 door refrigerator. This is a 3 door model with the freezer on the bottom and an ice/water dispenser in the top left side door.
Refrigerator interior lights stayed on with doors closed melting the diffuser, the light housing and the interior of the refrigerator above the light housing. The light sockets show early indications of burning. The melting of the components caused a chemical odor that was slow to dissipate. Removing the illuminated light bulbs with protective gloves caused slight burns to my finger tips. The assembly and refrigerator are availble for inspection.
