The reports, as CPSC published them
Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.
Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

No one hurt Made Apr 20, 2022, sent to the company Apr 25, 2022, published by CPSC May 9, 2022
The product, in the report: GE BOTTOM FREEZER FRENCH DOOR REFRIGERATOR. Stainless steel. Model #GFE28HSKMSS. Serial #RM518206
This is a GE french door with bottom freezer refrigerator. Over the past 9 months, the handle has come off in our hands 3 times when trying to open. On one recent occasion, I tried to open it, the handle came off and I was thrown back against the kitchen counter opposite the refrigerator. Luckily, I didn’t sustain any serious injury. There are currently other models that look exactly like our model that are on a recall list as of 4/14/22. But our model has not been listed under recall as we believe it should be.
The freezer has an immense amount of suction making it nearly impossible to open. Any weak or handicapped person would never be able to open it themselves.

The product, in the report: GE french door refrigerator 36” with bottom freezer, finger-print resistant stainless steel
GE French door, bottomfreezer model GNE27JYMNFFS, with Serial # SS332312, purchased at Home Depot, October 2021. The freezer handle comes off repeatedly when opening, just like described in GE’s voluntary recallof April 2022. THIS serial number is not included in their current recall, however. It poses the exact same risk of falling when opening as the recalled products. The recall should be expanded.

Hurt, no treatment Made Apr 16, 2022, sent to the company Apr 20, 2022, published by CPSC May 4, 2022
The product, in the report: 2020 GE French door refrigerator with bottom freezer, 32 inch wide, stainless steel
[REDACTED] for GE refrigerators should also include their 32 inch French door models. The freezer handle on mine, which is model number gne25jskss and was purchased March 2020, completely broke off as well and caused me to fall backwards landing on my butt. The real issue is the freezer door seals require above normal amounts of effort to open the door resulting in more strain on the plastic handle door mounts and increase chance of falling when the handle fails and breaks. The worst part is GE only offers replacement parts as an entire kit of all three door handles together for several hundred dollars instead of the mounting points or freezer door handle only.

The product, in the report: This is a french door bottom freezer Stainless Steel GE Refrigerator purchased n January 2022. 27 cubic feet capacity with an ice maker. The freezer door handle is held on by friction rather than industry standard set screws. The unit was purchased about 6 weeks ago. You can see the absence of a set screw on the pictures I’ve enclosed
We have had two events with our GE refrigerator/freezer...both dangerous. Specifically in each event the freezer section handle popped off when the freezer drawer was opened. In the first my wife was opening the drawer and the handle popped off throwing her back into our kitchen island. It startled her as she hit the island pretty hard. The second was more concerning. Our grandson tried to open the freezer drawer to get a popsicle. Like the other incident, when he pulled on the handle, it popped off and he fell backwards, hitting his head on our tile kitchen floor. The door handle hit him in the face. The issue is the freezer door handle is held on by friction rather than the industry standard set screws.

I purchased a new 28.2 cubic foot GE Profile refrigerator Model PSS28KYHBCFS in April, 2021. Upon placing items into the new freezer, we found that the freezer drawer would only extend out 4 inches, making it very hard to reach items in the back. Last week my wife went to retrieve a frozen item from the back of the freezer bin. She could not reach that item and had to pull the bin further out. The bin almost fell out of the freezer and several items fell from the bin almost hitting her foot. This is a design error and should be fixed before someone is injured.

The refrigerator heated to a temperature of 95 degrees Fahrenheit. It was giving off heat and spoiling food in the refrigerator. The cooling system kicked in and brought the temperature back down to 37 the suggested temperature by the manufacturer. This happened in a span of 8 hours. This is a food safety concern as unsafe bacteria and pathogens such as E Coli thrive in high temperatures, above 72 degrees. The rapid cooling causes a circumstance where it is possible not to realize the temperature has reached a dangerous level. We believe this may have happened multiple time and fortunately there have been no known illnesses.

The top hinge of our GE refrigerator broke. I opened the refrigerator to take something out and the door fell forward. The side door was not overstocked. In all my years I have never seen anything like this happen. No one in the home was hurt although it could have been a bad situation if it was not me opening the refrigerator door, it could have been one of my grandchildren. I am reporting this safety concern to make others aware that something like this can occur. My GE refrigerator was purchased in 2013. It is not by any means old. I am very disappointed with this appliance. I feel it is poorly made and the hinge was defective.

I have a GE refrigerator model number: GSC22KGRD. The issue is the auger in the ice maker. The plastic auger continues to break off in little pieces and is dispensed with ice through the ice dispenser on the front door. This has happened to me on at least three times. My wife almost swallowed a plastic shard. I can’t imagine what would have happened if she had. The auger has broken three times over the past 12 years that we have had the refrigerator. I am now putting in the third auger.
I know this issue has been reported to GE by many other customers but to date, GE has not done anything to correct this issue. I don’t know why they cannot make a non-plastic auger or make a better plastic auger that will not break into dangerous shards.

I bought all new GE appliances which were installed Dec. 30,2016 from home depot.Last night the ice seemed watery. I was cooking dinner and checked both sides and they were not cold enough. I started looking for the thermostat to see what it said. I just filled it with a months food. As I was reaching in the freezer to pull out food, I burned my fingers. I pulled back removed the food and it was red hot with a flame and hot coils! I have a picture of it red hot and my burnt finger tips
I unplugged the fridge . Luckily I came home before it caught the house on fire. My husband is permanently disabled with limited mobility and he was in the room on the other side of the wall where the fire would have spread! I have a cooler filled with meat but the rest and the fridge are a total loss.
I am forced to type this with one hand. As A realtor this is aweful . I do consider us lucky the whole house didn’t catch on fire.

The product, in the report: GE Refrigerator Model # PWE23KSKBSS Serial#: RG518516
Mr.[REDACTED], President and CEO GE Appliances 4000 Buechel Bank Rd Louisville, KY 40225
Dear Mr. [REDACTED]
I am writing to share with you my safety concerns about the appliances that we own, made by GE. As explained in detail below, I am requesting a removal of, and refund for our refrigerator, and reimbursement for the expenses incurred to make our [REDACTED] safe, because of the careless manufacturing at GE. On September 6, 2016,just two months after we began using our new GE refrigerator (Model#: PWE23KSKBSS;) we awoke to find that very GE appliance afire. We later learned the fire resulted from a malfunctioning heater. It melted the liner on the back wall of the unit, creating a large hole (see attached photo), and a refrigerator full of lost contents. GE’s response was to offer us$ I 00 to hold us over until a technician could get out to our area twelve days later to assess the problem. A refrigerator is an appliance that one cannot easily live without, especially a Type I insulin-dependent diabetic. Twelve days is simply unacceptable. We were fortunate that day to have been home to discover the fire, and to have the good sense to unplug the refrigerator before the fire spread. The refrigerator was replaced with a brand new dud. In the time that we have had the replacement, of the same make and model (Serial#: RGS 18516), we have had multiple service attempts to remedy what is ailing it, which remains undetermined as of this date. [REDACTED] I appreciate you looking into this matter and expect that you will take the necessary measures to prevent these dangerous occurrences from happening to other GE consumers. I respectfully request that you make arrangements to remove our refrigerator from our home, and issue a full refund for its cost. After a fire in the first one, and a replacement refrigerator that has unresolved problems, I feel a refund is fully justified. Please do whatever you can to be certain that your appliances are safe for your consumers, well beyond the limited life of their warranty. I can be reached by mail at [REDACTED]; by telephone at [REDACTED]; or by email at: [REDACTED]. Thank you. Sincerely, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: GE Freezer Ice Maker
I was defrosting the freezer side of a GE refrigerator-freezer. I had turned off the freezer side. I was just about finished removing the ice from the bottom of the freezer when above my head the ice maker, which was in the off position and hadn’t been used in nearly seven years, started sparking and burst into flames. I closed the freezer door to extinguish the flames and then unplugged the refrigerator. I contacted GE the next day and they had a repairman out on July 5th to examine it. He confirmed that the ice maker had caught fire and removed it from the freezer compartment. The refrigerator operates fine now. GE contacted me about the repair but when I asked if the engineers wanted the ice maker to identify the cause of the fire they said they weren’t interested.
My ice maker spontaneously caught fire. Why wouldn’t GE be interested. My house could have caught fire if I hadn’t been in front of the appliance.
I kept the ice maker as proof. I have pictures.

The product, in the report: GE Fridge
My family has a GE fridge/Freezer and the ice maker broke in an unsafe way. There is a large plastic screw inside the ice housing that pushes the ice towards the opening, which at some point broke into several pieces inside the ice tray. It did not break enough to stop moving ice forward, however, so we found small plastic shards from the broken screw that came out when ice was dispensed, that was nearly indistinguishable from ice. I understand plastic is brittle when cold and can eventually fail, however the fact that the screw is clear white, the same color as ice makes this a safety hazard. If my daughter would have swallowed a shard it could have done internal damage, possibly requiring surgery to remove if we even ever realized it was swallowed. I HIGHLY recommend raising the industry standard on future ice makers and making internal components capable of failure out of bright red plastic so these shards will be noticed in case of failure when dispensed with ice.

The product, in the report: Refrigerator
The consumer was cleaning her refrigerator when she noticed that the plastic light cover had melted. The consumer states that the plastic light cover is about the size of a dollar bill. The consumer indicates that the light bulb was replaced around the same time she noticed the its cover had melted.
The consumer contacted the Manufacturer and explained the situation. The representative she spoke to informed her that they would have to send a Service Technician to inspect her unit. The Service Technician inspected the refrigerator but found nothing wrong. The refrigerator is no longer under warranty so the consumer must pay out-of-pocket to replace the plastic light cover. The consumer bought an extended warranty with the retailer and will find out if this part is covered.
The consumer plans on keeping the refrigerator for at least the next thirty days in case an investigations ensues.

The product, in the report: GE Ice-maker
[REDACTED], Here’s the thing...I replaced the drive-cup last week and It jammed again... The Ice-bucket wasn’t even completely filled with new ice. If you have not personally experienced this problem... It takes pulling/pounding/shaking the ice-bucket to release the jammed drive-cup from the auger... So much that the items from the top of the refrigerator almost vibrate off the top and onto the floor.
Most troubling are the shards of plastics from the drive-cup that drop into the ice-bucket... Then eventually end up dropping out of the ice-shoot Into a drinking-cup. It is very disturbing to find plastic-shards In my drinking-cup ... Or even worse to swallow the shards of plastic. I believe this is a consumer safety issue.
Complaints dating back to 2008:

As referenced in the postings... I too replaced the entire ice-bucket assembly... But it did not solve the problem.
Based on my experiences, and ten-years of others postings all over the Internet of the same... There is clearly a defect.
I retired from Corporate GE as a Master Black-Belt. As so... I would deem this unacceptable.
As a result... I must request a long-term-solution... Not a short-term-fix.
If I am not satisfied with your response... What is my next escalation point of contact?

The product, in the report: tempered glass “vegetable pan cover” shelf within a GE refrigerator. Approx dimensions 30x 24 in.
I removed a tempered glass shelf from my GE refrigerator for a routine cleaning and placed it in the kitchen sink, ready for cleaning. While it was balanced there, and before I had done anything to it (ie. no water or cleaning cloth was applied to it) it spontaneously exploded into many fragments that scattered widely across my kitchen to a radius of some 6 feet, including into my clothing, my hands and my hair. Fortunately I was wearing reading glasses so avoided fragments reaching my eyes. I received a number of small lacerations on my hands which while bleeding, did not require external medical attention. The clean up required disposing of a number of food items that were contaminated by glass, clearing out glass from the garbage disposal, from across the kitchen, across the counters and floor, and from my clothing and my hands. I received several splinters in my hands that I had to remove using tweezers.
The shelf was made of tempered glass and had no visible defect when I removed it for routine cleaning. The fridge is almost 7 years old.
This is highly dangerous and I was lucky my injuries were not more serious.

I have a GE side by side refrigerator , the ice maker quit dispensing ice so I reached in the trough and gathered ice and put it in my glass . There is a plastic piece that turns to dispense the ice that unknown to me was broken and plastic pieces where in the bottom of the trough that I then put into the glass. I choked on a piece and my wife cleared my air way she is a nurse. I don’t know if I ingested any but am staying home for a couple days so she can watch me to make sure nothing happens in my digestive track. I actually had to pay to get someone to call me back five hours later at least . He gave me the customer service number and also told me this is a common complaint since they changed the part from steel to plastic !!

The product, in the report: Refrigerator/freezer
We are in a brand new apartment building with a GE freezer/refrigerator. We are the first people who have lived in this unit. Twice the red coils behind the vents in the freezer have glowed so red hot that they began melting the ice. It seems to happen when the ice gets stuck because the tray is full of ice. Perhaps the freezer wants to make more ice, but cannot, so then the coils get very hot. This seems like a serious fire hazard. Today was the second time this happened.
We reported this to GE [REDACTED] on 8/9/15.

The product, in the report: Refrigerator
This caller is reporting her refrigerator purchased April 8th, 2011 from Lowes.com. She had no problems with this refrigerator until around the second week in May 2015 when she noticed that the ice maker was not working properly. She contacted IV Appliance who sent a repair tech to her home. She accepted a repair of a new ice bucket as well as other parts and she has been waiting for the parts to be delivered so that repair could be completed.
Around May 11th or 12th, the caller gave her 2 yr old granddaughter a cup of ice to chew on when she noticed the child was sucking on something that she told her to spit out. The child spit out a clear piece of plastic that was sharp at one end, was approximately one inch large and in the shape of a triangle.
Later that same day the caller’s husband had a drink with ice and also found that a piece of 2” clear plastic, in the shape of a triangle and sharp on one end was in his mouth after a sip of his drink.
She still has the pieces of plastic from both incidents.
She contacted the manufacturer on May 12th, 2015 and their representative named [REDACTED]created case# [REDACTED] and sent a repair tech from A&E Appliances who said that they would replace the icemaker but the caller declined stating that she does not want another plastic auger with the same safety issues.
She contacted the manufacturer again and spoke with [REDACTED] who sent someone to her home May 21st, 2014.
She is reporting these incidents as choking and laceration hazards.
The manufacturer has stated that they will attempt to provide an upgrade and will inform caller when they do find one that they can put in her refrigerator but have not contacted her again.
She is not using the auger.

The ice maker was still turned off. The entire freezer and refrigerator is saturated in black soot. some of my groceries were not salvagable, if it was things not in sealed packaging. GE Profile Side by Side Refrigerator model # PSS26MSTCSS. I’m getting small metal shreds from my ice maker. When I called GE consumer product representative, they did not seem to be too concern. They said that this is the first time someone has reported this issue. They only give me a discount to get a new bucket and auger to resolve the issue. They did not even ask for the old bucket and auger so they can investigate the issue. I took a closer look at the system. It seems like that the auger and the metal rotator from the ice maker is hitting each other and causing some metal shreds to come off from the auger thus having those shreds with the ice. This is a bit scary if the consumers are not aware of this metal shreds in their ice. I hope that someone can look into this problem.

I have owned a GE side by side refrigerator for just over a year. I have a freezer door that distributes water & ice. I dispensed ice into a glass and found that there was a small piece of clear plastic (which mixes in with the ice and looks like it) in the glass. I removed the ice tray and dumped the ice finding a larger piece of clear plastic mixed in. Upon examination of the unit I found that the fins that move the ice forward toward the distribution point are made of clear plastic and one of them had broken off shattered and mixed in with the ice. It is hard to see these pieces as they look like the ice. I find this to very dangerous as children or someone else using this ice dispenser would most likely not notice the sharp plastic in their glass and possibly ingest it. I have called GE for service, but I feel that this condition needs attention

Please check up on the GE refrigerator, model # looks like NO. This was a new appliance installed here by the management when I moved into this apartment in 2007.
This refrigerator has heavy doors that automatically close when I am trying to put something away or take something out. I is very have to do this and try to keep the door open at the same time. I have been hit on the head several times, especially by the freezer door. Last week I was hit on the side of my head by the refrigerator door. I still have a bruise that is sore and swollen. It could be worse, like a concussion.
Is there any reason for this silly idea that the doors have to close automatically?

The product, in the report: GE side by side refrigerator model pcf23ngtd s/n RL428726. Installed 9/2006.
The product being reported is a GE side by side refrigerator model pcf23ngtd s/n RL428726. Installed 9/2006. I’m issuing the report because this is the second time this appliance has experienced an electrical fire and I am concerned for my safety. Furthermore, I have found no on-line recall data for this model and feel there should be. Fortunately I heard and smelled the start of the fire and was able to prevent any causalties or additional property loss.
I was sitting in my living room at approximately midnight, and heard the sound of loud electrical shorting coming from the general direction of the kitchen. I turned the TV down but the sound stopped. I went into the kitchen but could not trace the source. There was a distinct smell of burning electrical. The refrigerator was still working. I went through the whole house feeling outlets, circuit panels, and appliances, etc, but could not locate the source.
Reluctant to go to bed, I waited almost another 2 hrs when I heard the sound again. This time I ran into the kitchen and saw what can only be described as a lightening storm and smoke pouring from under the appliance. I immediated pulled the unit out from the wall and unplugged it. The sparking and smoke immediately stopped. I then pulled the rear cover off the unit to confirm there was no fire still smoldering. There was not. I am going to be contacting GE on the next buisness day, but this is not about repair/replacement so much as I believe these manufacturers sould be accountable to build appliances which do not go up in flames to which their response is we will repair that after the fact....if your still alive.
Approximately 1 yr ago the main control board also went up in a much smaller electrical short that also resulted in burning to the system board.

They had also noticed that there was an odor of something burning before the first service 2011.
3/2013 The manufacturer was contacted and they were advised that repair would be costly. In comparing the price for repairs and a new one the consumer would prefer purchasing another unit.

The manufacturer was not contacted as yet.
The caller feels that this refrigerator is unsafe and should be reported.
Note: Caller will add more info when report is received.
UPDATE: Auger part (plastic) broke off plastic auger assembly and small/large parts were dispensed with the ice. I was able to see large parts in a glass of water my wife was drinking from. I do not think she drank/swallowed any parts.
This type of ice maker (per the repairman) has had this problem before. The replacement part was the same plastic style. I feel this needs to be recalled and not used as it could cause someone to swallow a broken part. I have the old part and a broken piece that was in the glass of ice.

The product, in the report: Refrigerator
At 2am my wife woke up due to a strong burning smell coming from the front right bottom of the fridge; a combination of melting rubber/plastic and burning hair. After looking online to discover what the problem may be (they claim its the compressor) a huge spark came from where the compressor is positioned and a softball sized fire broke out. We quickly unplugged the fridge and put out the flames. This fridge is only 6 years old.

The product, in the report: GE Stainless side by side refrigerator ice maker
Aug. 9, 2012, approximately 12:30 am, I had just filled a glass with crushed ice from my GE refrigerator’s ice maker, model no GSH25JSTASS. I then poured a can of Pepsi over the ice, and proceeded to drink it. As I drank, what I thought to be small pieces of crushed ice entered my mouth, and as I chewed the ice, I bit down on something hard. Upon closer examination I realized that it was a sharp piece of plastic about the size of a pencil eraser. I immediately drained the rest of the drink into a strainer, and found that a larger piece had also been dispensed into my glass. I examined the ice maker discovered that the plastic on the Ice Dispenser Bucket Auger GE Part Number: WR17X11705 had broken into three pieces. I believe that the fact that these pieces of plastic can break off and be dispensed into a persons drink poses a serious danger for choking or injury.

The product, in the report: Model# ZISS480DXSS GE 48” Built-In Side-by-Side Refrigerator with Dispenser
I recently purchase a GE 48” Built-In Side-by-Side Refrigerator with Dispenser. From the first day I have been having a problems with it. The temperature fluctuates. I have already trashed thousands of Dollars worth of food. My oldest has been sick with diarrhea several times consuming bad food due to the same problem. My new born has been sick since I was storing breast milk in the same refrigerator. I have contacted GE customer service several times and even had a technician check the refrigerator twice. The technician has not been able to fix the problem and his last comment was “It takes a new refrigerator six months before it will work properly, you need to wait!” The second technician suggested I request a new refrigerator before it is too late. He thought fixing it is hopeless! I have contacted GE support and customer relations several times and neither one of them is responsive! I guess all they care about is to get my money, they do not care if my family get sick or die! I invested in buying this new refrigerator to make sure it is safe for storing breast milk for my new born, keep fresh vegetables and food for my family and save money in electricity as our family is growing. I am not achieving any of my goals and I truly regret replacing my old refrigerator. I am reporting to you because I do not want any other family go through what my family and I have gone through.

Emergency room Made Oct 29, 2011, sent to the company Nov 7, 2011, published by CPSC Nov 22, 2011
The product, in the report: GE Monogram built in refrigerator
For the 2nd time in two years out GE Monogram refrigerator has sweated or leaked into the drywall behind the refrigerator. The first nightmare was discovered in 2009 after ten years of slowly drip by drip it leaked and poisoned the air. GE accepted liability for their KNOWN defective sweating refrigerator and pair for the repairs to our home. GE the send us a replacement for that leaky fridge in 2009. ON 8-1-2011 we reported water leaking to GE, they replaced the motherboard, A month later we found more water leaking and we again called GE who said heaters or sweat kits had to be installed to stop the leaks. On 9-30-2011 the repairman came to instal the heaters, when they pulled the Monogram refrigerator from the built in cabinet we discovered that once again we had BLACK MOLD growing on the drywall and back of the refrigerator. GE now wont repair it. They want it back. GE paid for the damage last time but this time will not agree to cover the decontamination of the home from the elevated levels of hazardous Toxic mold spores called Stachybotrys and Asperigilum plus 3 or 4 other toxic molds. My wife has asthma and she is allergic to mold. She is still having breathing problems and under a doctors care. After living in a hotel for 28 days we have now rented a house until we can get GE to clean decontaminate our home as a direct result of having a GE monogram refrigerator leak away in the corner of the kitchen for 12 years. Ge wants us to sign a release for the estimated damage although the adjuster FORGOT (same like last time) to include 7 things that need to be removed and reinstalled to get the damaged wall board out. They have no interest in covering the decontamination clean up bill of $20,865.00. We need your help as a government agency to protect us from this very kind of situation. Last time I complained on a web site and a family in California that has the exact same model doing the exact same damage contacted me for help. They also had their air tested and it is also contaminated. Please investigate as I am quite sure there are more than the 3 of us out there. GE has recently changed the Monogram line design and totally redesigned and reconfigured this high end $6,000.00 line. When you spend $6,000.00 on an appliance you would not expect them to be leaking away and decaying our home. My wife is made sick by what is going on in our home. I believe she sent a complaint to CPSC a few weeks ago. I am begging for your help in this matter as I am going out of my mind with trying to figure out how to get back in our home. Please call [REDACTED] for more information. Thanks I know you can help us.

My GE refrigerator caught on fire. Model Number GSH25JSRF SS.
My husband woke up at 12:30 a.m. and smelled burning plastic. He looked at the back of the fridge and a two inch flame was coming from a part connected to the condenser. My husband says the fan was working fine. He unplugged the fridge and put out the fire. Thank the Lord my husband woke up. I’m having a baby in a week. We have a seven year old daughter, a cat, and a dog. We bought the fridge about 5-6 yrs ago. It was an expensive model. It was a good fridge then this just happened.

The product, in the report: Stainless Steel Botton Freezer GE Profile Refrigerator. Model PFS22SISBSS
We purchase a GE Profile bottom freezer Refrigerator in 2007. The unit was completely replaced by GE after three service calls for the unit not being able to maintain temperature. The unit was replaced with same model in 2008 PFS22SISBSS with a new unit. To this day, the unit barely keeps it correct temperature, and now we realize that we had been making excuses for the unit due to our teenagers using the product and possibly leaving the doors open. Well, the fact of the matter is that we conducted an experiment while on vacation, and returned home after two weeks, to our unit being at 61 degrees, both freezer and fridge, and the unit was sealed for two weeks! We are constantly throwing away spoiled items and have moved all frozen food to a freezer in our unattached garage (that [REDACTED] Refrigerator is over 10 years old!) We purchased top- of- the-line appliances for our new home in 2007, sparing no expense and all appliances, dishwasher, refrigerator and stove/range have had a minimum of two service calls a piece! We will never purchase from GE again, but do we have any further recourse?? If you [REDACTED] the Model number of the refrigerator, we are not alone in this identical and repetitive issue! Thank you for any and all assistance in this matter. [REDACTED]
