The product, in the report: Microwave
This consumer is reporting a microwave he purchased from a home maintenance products retailer December 2015 in Delaware.
The caller had used the rack only one time until around the first week in July 2016 when he used it for a second time but when he was putting the rack in the open holes prepared for it but when he touched the wall accidently it began arching and sparking causing three burn marks where the holes for the rack are located as well as the hooks that the rack sits on.
He states that his wife contacted the manufacturer also the first week in July 2016 and the manufacturer sent third party techs to his home August 4th, 2016 who painted over the marks left by the arching and sparking then advised him that it is fixed.
He is reporting this incident as a preventative notice for consumers because he believes that the microwave remains a safety hazard and he doesn’t believe that painting over the burn marks solves the safety hazard.

The product, in the report: My microwave is starting on its own. Possibly causing a fire hazard.
I have a Whirlpool over the range Microwave model GH7155XHS-1, Serial Number: FGP4127833, that starts on its own and continues to run. I had to unplug it to turn it off. It seems to generate heat in the inside of the microwave intermittently. I have very concerned about it starting a fire if I am not at home.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool microwave hood combination
My microwave caught on fire while in use. I was cooking sliced beets on a microwave safe plate, I put it in for 3 minutes and within the first minute, I smelled smoke and burning. Flames were coming from the top of the unit at the inlet cover. The food was not on fire. I opened the door and snuffed out the fire with a pan lid. Then just in case there was still burning inside, ( I could see up inside to the fan where the plastic melted) I hit it with a fire extinguisher. The unit was recalled due to the possibility of fire and “repaired” by the manufactures rep in 2002. This fire was not started by grease. I use my microwave very seldom and keep it very clean.

The product, in the report: Black inset Whirlpool microwave that is 16” in heighth, 29.5” long, and 16” depth.
I was reheating some zucchini in a ceramic dish (back of dish did not mention anything about use in a microwave), a dish I’ve used for 5 years in this microwave without incident. I covered the dish with a paper towel. Shortly after starting the microwave, within a few seconds, I smelled something burning and looked inside to see the paper towel was on fire and getting out of control. I quickly grabbed the dish with towel on fire and threw it in the sink dousing it with water.

The product, in the report: 2015 Whirlpool microwave hood combination
Our microwave hood combination unit has been in place less that six months. It was not being used but was plugged into its dedicated receptacle over our gas range. The stove’s oven was on as were two of the stove top burners. The burners had pots on them so there wasn’t an uncovered flame present. The microwave fan turned on without any manual intervention and could only be turned off by unplugging the microwave from its receptacle. We do not leave it plugged in when we are away from home.

Arching within the microwave when rack is in place. Whirlpool model WMH32519CTI Ser # TR47718220 Purchased 2-5-15 Whirlpool advises they will do nothing because the rack was in place. Our concern is that the user may be out of the kitchen when the arching occurs which may cause a fire and or electrical failure. Why sell a microwave with a shelf/rack & tell the owner not to use it. This information was not provided at time of sale nor prior to installation.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Velos Microwave/Convection oven
Unsafe Products - We have a Whirlpool Velos Microwave/Convection Oven (several years old). On or about March 26th, while heating a small cup of water (in a microwave safe container) my wife and I witnessed the Microwave door burst open, shooting all contents across my Kitchen. Had my wife been just 12 inches closer, she would have sustained injury. The event was powerful enough to fracture the latches that keep the door secure while in use. In addition, the unit shows no signs of life or power at all. When we spoke with a Whirlpool rep (just today) she did not exhibit any signs of concern. The Rep suggested that we call out an authorized repair person and have the item repaired at my expense. My immediate concerns is that there is no indication that the unit will not again explode but perhaps next time while my kids or others are closer to the unit and become harmed.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Gold 1.8 cu ft Countertop Microwave Oven with Sensor Cooking. Stainless Steel with Black Touchpad and Push Button Door Release * 13-9/16h x 23-7/8w x 19-13/16d * Output: 1100watts * 2450MHz * Rated: 13.6AMP * 120V AC 60Hz
Our Whirlpool Gold microwave oven Model GT4185SKS-2 worked well for 10 years without incidents or repairs; however one day after warming up a glass of milk (use completed and clock displayed) we closed the door and it began making a low, constant humming sound. We opened the door, the humming stopped and the interior light came on. Curious, we placed a glass of cold water in the center of the microwave and simply closed the door without touching the keypad. The humming sound immediately started, the interior was dark, no light on, and the turntable did not move. Within 60 seconds we could see our water boiling. We opened the door, the light turned on, the humming stopped. Our water was boiling and steam came pouring out the top of the unit. Then we smelled a bit of smoke, something was burning although we don’t know what. We immediately flipped the fuse and began unscrewing its 27” trim kit to remove the microwave from our cabinetry. We believe had we not been home and awake to manage this issue, and the wherewithal to cut the circuit and remove the microwave, it would have burned our house down.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool over stove mounted microwave/convection oven with vent hood, Model GH7208XRY-4
I purchased a Whirlpool Microwave/Convection oven, Model GH7208XRY-4, approximately two and a half years ago and had it installed in my vacation home where it receives very limited use. About a year after it was installed the electronic control panel failed and was replaced by a Whirlpool factory technician.
The unit appeared to be functioning properly until a couple of months ago when I noticed that the unit would occasionally beep and the screen would change as if someone were programming the controls without anyone touching it. I also noted that on occasion the screen would freeze momentarily when trying to program it but the unit otherwise seemed to work normally. Last month my wife placed a small dish of food in the oven to reheat it and set the timer for 1 minute then left the kitchen area and forgot to check on it after the 1 minute time was up. About 20 minutes or more later I smelled a strong odor of smoke emanating from the kitchen and found the microwave still running at full power. I quickly opened the door of the oven which turned it off but the oven was full of smoke and the food was burned so heavily that it looked like lumps of charcoal. The microwave safe food cover was burned and melted almost beyond recognition. I can’t help but think that had I not been nearby the unit would have continued to heat until something caught fire and caused extensive damage to my home.
I contacted Whirlpool service and thought the until was still under warranty due to the service six months earlier but they denied any further responsibility and told me they could only fix it if I paid the full cost of repairs which, most likely, would exceed the purchase price of the unit. Since they can offer no assurance that another repair will last any longer than the previous one I am forced to replace the unit with a more reliable one.
I did some research on this problem and it appears strikingly similar to reported problems with Kitchenaid brand microwaves also made by Whirlpool which would just randomly start on their own. I believe that any kitchen appliance that can start on its own or run longer than the time for which it has been programmed is extraordinarily dangerous and should be recalled immediately.

The product, in the report: This is a Whirlpool Gold above range Stainless Steel microwave oven.
The plastic spacer between the door handle and the door to the microwave fractured resulting in a jagged edge. Using the microwave can result in a minor laceration to the users hand.
Since this is an above range microwave, the angle at which the user reaches up to the door handle causes the jagged edge to catch on the side of the users hand on the pinky finger near the first knuckle, resulting in a minor laceration.

The product, in the report: Stainless steel microwave oven over the stove
Microwave oven caught fire. Being used for only 10 seconds and a pop was heard, I turned back and saw the fire thru the window. Immediately shut off, some smoke was still coming out so immediately unplugged. The model # MH1150XMS-3. The fire appears to have come out of the opening where the plastic hook is for holding the rack. It does not appear to have come from food or dish, etc. thankfully, I was still in kitchen when this happened, I had only made it 3 steps away when I heard the pop and turned back and saw the fire. Called whirlpool and after a long wait and aggravating conversation with a “safety supervisor” as she described herself, stated they would send a repair man out but I would be responsible for cost of parts to repair...... I simply want someone to know that this product is dangerous.
If any questions, I can be reached at [REDACTED] or [REDACTED]
Thank you.

The product, in the report: Over the range Microwave
Consumer stated that while baking a potato for approximately 2 mins, she noticed that a large flame erupted in the microwave. She canceled the operation of the microwave and used a dish towel to contain the flames. The incident had caused the potato to be charred. She had used the microwave to bake potatoes before but this was the first incident.
(11/1/13) The manufacturer was contacted online and she was informed that she should check her warranty since she had purchased the unit only 3 months ago.
Caller is concerned that she has used several microwaves over the past years and feels that this unit poses a potential fire hazard and should be investigated.
The product is not involved in a recall.

I am seriously concerned about a fire hazard should the unit start on its own in the middle of the night or when I am not home. Any assistance with this issue would be appreciated. The product, in the report: Whirlpool model # WMH76718AB OTR Microwave
On numerous occasions when using this microwave the unit fills with steam, unable to see inside the microwave through door due to condensation on glass. When microwave door is opened steam billows out. Condensation covers the glass and inside unit walls andfloor are covered, in one case it puddled in the corner of the unit. Danger due to the steam coming out of the unit when door is opened. There appears to be no venting of the heat/steam from inside the microwave. Someone is going to get hurt. I contacted whirlpool 4 times and had two warranty repair technicians come out. Both technicians said the unit is operating as designed, but had an “excessive” amount of steam buildup. Both stated they would not buy this unit. Whirlpool said it is operating normally and should have this buildup inside when cooking. I have a video I would like to share. I am going to try to get Home Depot to take the unit back, but I think it is important that this be reported.

The third time when repair came out, the technician could not do anything because the wrong part ,which is a panel assembly, was been mailed to the consumer from Whirlpool. The consumer does not have the dates nor who she spoke with. The repair technician advised the consumer that even if the part was correct, he felt that it would not have solved her problem. The consumer was advised that even though she unplugged the microwave, there was enough electricity store to cause the microwave to come on by itself. She was advised to unplug it and leave the door open. The consumer is afraid that the microwave will catch on fire.
(06/2012) The consumer contacted Whirlpool because the part was not right. The consumer stated that she left messages and no ever called her back.

The product, in the report: Above the range Whirlpool Microwave
The microwave was purchased in October of 2011. During May of 2013, a piece of plastic that connects the handle to the microwave has started to break and flake off. This microwave is an above the stove model, so I have a concern that the plastic is breaking and flaking off while I am cooking something below on the stove. This would be both a potential fire hazard if the plastic landed on the cooking elements (both gas or electric) and a choking hazard if it fell into something that was cooking on the stove. A call was placed to Whirlpool to discuss this issue but they only wanted to place a service call which would cost me over 100.00.
I still own and use this microwave and there is still a good amount of plastic left to fall before the handle falls off, but I still have a concern over the fire and choking issues.

1 hour ago I started our Whirlpool Model MH1160XS Microwave Hood combination (manufacture date 2007) and after about 3 minutes smoke and a terrible odor began billowing from the upper right corner of the unit. I immediately opened the door to stop the cycle. Smoke continued to pour from the unit for several minutes. There was not a fire, but I happened to be in close proximity to the unit when the smell and smoke started. This is an over the stove unit which is mounted under a short kitchen cabinet. If I had not been close by, there would have been a potential fire situation. This is extremely dangerous!!! We have smoke detectors, but I caught the problem before it went off.

We have a whirlpool Gold AccuWave System which own (Kitchenaid)model # GH9176XMT-1 purchased 2007, It did spark flames when used when we first got it they came out and determined the door was defective and replaced it. 2012 it has since added time or changed the way it was originally started, let say press 2 to heat for 2 minutes, turn to look at it and it’s cooking for 10:30 on it own. Next you start it and it starts sparking flames inside for no reason with nothing inside the oven, and have to cancel the heating time and start over, which makes me nervous. It has done this through out the years. The last time it sparked flames it showed error code F7 on the control panel and turned itself off. we unplugged it and restarted it for it to do the same thing. I won’t use it now. Called Whirlpool and they said they had no reports of this and stated a repair person need to come find out what code F7 is and should unplug it and not use it. Hoping someone can get this recalled. Don’t wanna lose my home in a fire over some default that they don’t want to recall.

The product, in the report: over-range wall mounted microwave oven
Maytag over-stove microwave, model MMV4205BAW, s/n 17283056NN. The other night, I set the time with power at 8 and as soon as I pushed start, this extremely loud sound with an intensely bright white light came from the right side behind the vent grill. As fast as I could, I opened the door to stop the cycle. It was obviously an electrical arcing of some kind for some reason and was very frightening. To find out if it would do it again, I cleared the settings, then set the time with the power full, put my hand on the handle to open the door as quick as possible if necessary and then pushed start. It didn’t arc. However, the incident left my family quite spooked. Just tonight we saw a report on the news that there are a number of over range microwaves that have caught fire, many of which weren’t even on at the time. This report combined with our own experience has us very concerned about the safety of this microwave. This isn’t the first time I’ve had an issue with this unit, as I’ve had to replace 3 times the sprocket piece in the center that the turntable plate grips onto to rotate. In each case, the fault has been a crack in the thin plastic of the cylinder that pushes over the spindle. The crack has been the same spot in all the pieces and it usually takes about 9 months to a year and then it breaks. Once the crack appears, it can’t grip the spindle to rotate the turntable.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Microwave Hood Combination in White. 30 inches wide by 16.5 inches tall. MH2155XPQ-0
Dear Consumer Product Safety Commission,
Our Whirlpool Microwave with Hood Combination began running on it’s own while we were asleep on Monday, January 28-2013. Upon awakening at approximately 5:40 AM we found the appliance in the heating mode and the operational display indicating “Locked” which prevented us from shutting the appliance down. We had to disable the appliance by opening the door and pulling the electrical plug. The microwave has never had an operational issue prior to this incident.
Thankfully we had a power outage that morning and the Whole House Generator began running which alerted my wife and I to the microwave running non stop which had possibly saved our lives.
The only changes at our home have been a “Smart Meter” which was installed on December 31-2012 by our local electric utility provider.
The following day I had the Whole House Generator checked by an authorized Generac Dealer for proper operation, and our utility provider check our electric service for proper operation and no operational deficiencies were found. We are confident the Whirlpool Microwave has a major fault.
We hope this information is helpful to others.
Thank You

The product, in the report: Microwave Oven
The consumer says his wife placed a potato in the microwave. She stepped away and came back affter a few minutes and found the microwave unit was engulfed in flames. It is completely scorched.
The consumer contacted the manufacturer this past Tuesday October 16th who told him they were not supposed to place a paper towel inside the microwave. The manufacturer sent out a technician on the 18th of October who said that they did use the unit properly. The technician said the unit is beyond repair.
The consumer says the manual states clearly to place a paper towel under a potato. The consumer feels that there is a problem with these microwaves and they are trying to get away with it by making the consumer the scapegoat.
The manufacturer ultimately decided to offer the customer a replacement unit.

Was cooking a bag of popcorn when smelled something burning and smoke coming from microwave. Thought it was the popcorn that caught fire but found instead that the plastic clips that hold the metal rack caught fire. The rack was not in the microwave when the clips caught fire. The popcorn was under cooked and the timer was set by the microwave for popcorn which was three minutes. Stopped the microwave and have not used microwave again. Looked online for problems with this unit and found there was a recall for units built with a different serial number but then found other complaints with the exact same problem that happened to me, but they were told that they did not fall under the recall. Don’t care if it is under recall or not just warn others that this unit can catch fire and not to use them. Thank You for trying to protect the public from defective products. This unit can cause major damage.

I am writing to advise you that I believe the Whirlpool Microwave listed above is both Defective and a Safety hazard.
We moved into our newly built home on May 1, 2012. Shortly after moving in, we attempted to use the microwave oven to reheat food items. This microwave has 2 layers. Layer one is the rotating bottom plate layer and layer 2 is a grill rack like material. The Microwave arced/sparked off on the corner and left a burn mark on both the lining of the microwave and the corner of the grill/ rack.
We called Whirlpool, who in turn sent out a Technician from a local company. The Technician acknowledged that there was a problem but was not ready to call it a defect until she was able to confer with Whirlpool. The Technician returned a 2nd time and again acknowledged there was a problem but stopped short of calling it a “defect”. She indicated we would have to pursue it as a “Warranty” Issue with Whirlpool.
I have written Whirlpool and advised them there are only 2 Fixes I will accept: 1. Fix the Microwave OR 2. Replace it. I have NOT heard formally from Whirlpool though they acknowledge receiving my letter.
I believe the Builder of my home purchased these Whirlpool Appliances through Lowes of Sparks, Nevada. I have not contacted Lowes as I think it is up to Whirlpool to honor their warranty on this new appliance.
The following is taken directly off the Whirlpool Warranty pamphlet: Cooking Rack -“Use only for 2 level cooking. To avoid damage to the microwave oven, always remove rack after 2 level cooking”.
What this tells me is that Whirlpool has known all along that there is a problem with using the Microwave with the grill/rack in place. Why else would they try to insert a “disclaimer” in the Warranty Book.
I believe this product is both defective and dangerous; dangerous enough to require a total recall of all units that have the 2 layer grill/rack.

The product, in the report: Microwave-Convection Oven, Whirlpool. Stand-alone (not a built in unit) Model No. GM8155XJQ 0 Serial No. FGR1901664
Whirlpool Mircowave-Convection oven Model GM8155XJQ 0, Serial FGR1901664 purchased December 2004. This microwave has set in one location away from the stove and sink since it’s purchase; we are the original purchasers.
Today, 15 August 2012, at about 8:30 AM, my wife heard a noises in the kitchen: First: sounded like glass breaking, then a large bang. She walked into the kitchen, and found the oven door was slightly ajar, and the control panel was leaning out at the top of the unit. She could see into the inside, where it was sparking and arcing. She unplugged the unit and closed the oven door.
She called our mid-20’s son from the downstairs, and by the time they got back to the kitchen moments later, it was burning. Quick work by a fire extinguisher brought the flames under control, whereupon they then moved it to the floor, and sprayed it again with the extinguisher. They were able to move the oven out to the middle of the driveway.
In the process of dealing with the burning microwave, and subsequently putting out the fire, they both inhaled a fair amount of smoke and extinguisher material.
Had they been moments later, or if no one had been at home, we would have lost our home and contents due to fire.
The oven was not currently in use, it has been used about 3 hours prior for about 2 minutes.

I was re-heating chicken on a paper plate. I turned around to do dishes and turned back and it looked like there was fire in my oven! I opened the door and it kept running, so I closed it and pushed the cancel button and it turned off. The 2 lights in the ceiling of the unit, possibly halogen (?) were bright orange and they were smoking. I thought my house would catch on fire! I got a stool and unplugged the unit in the cupboard above it and called the store where I purchased it. They set appt to come out to see it. I called Whirlpool and they said “tough...it is not under warranty”. they can not help. The repairman is coming later today. LATER:: The repairman is here. He said the lights that were glowing and burned out should never have come on while reheating, which is what I was doing. we called whirlpool product safety and she talked to repairman and gave him a code to allow him to take it to his shop and see what caused it and to repair it if it can be. but she said I will have to pay for parts if he can repair it, and if he cant repair it, she will prorate a replacement.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Built-in combination appliance: Upper microwave and lower electric oven
On Christmas Day, I was steps away from entering my kitchen when I heard a great “POW” noise and falling glass. The microwave’s inner door had blown shards of glass onto the kitchen floor and into the lower oven. Neither oven was turned on at the time. The outer door stayed intact. The combination microwave/lower oven was installed on 3/3/11 by Sears as a replacement because the first identical appliance, delivered on 3/19/11 and installed in June, 2008 during a kitchen renovation, consistently needed new parts and Sears offered a new appliance.
Presently, the Sears repairman replaced the oven door unit, but could not tell me why the door blew out or if it will happen again; I do not trust the microwave now and am uncomfortable each time that I use it.

The whirlpool microwave MH1150XMB-1 was not running. We warmed up some food about 15 minutes prior and the cook time was over. It was not running and nothing was going on.
I noticed a smell - a burning smell. We looked around and noticed a fire inside the microwave. It was the small gasket under the turntable plate was burning and the plate was cracked. We immediately opened the door to the microwave and tried to remove the plate. The plate was black and cracked, and the small gasket was blackened and burnt. After removing the plate and the gasket, we closed the door. Then unplugged the unit from power.
This is totally unacceptable quality of whirlpool. Luckily we were home and happened to notice the fire. If we had not been home, it would have been a major fire.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool over-the-range microwave oven, white
Whirlpool Microwave Oven Model WMH1162XVQ-2, Serial Number TR Y 14 28532, manufactured April 2009.
When the stove-top light is selected on both the rear right quadrant of the lower surface of the interior oven compartment beneath the turntable as well as the wheeled turntable rack become blistering hot to the touch. This occurs without the oven being in use, but only with the stove-top light turned on to either the high or low setting. The white plastic wheel track in our microwave has become discolored (light brown), probably due to the heat build-up. A factory recommended technician evaluated our oven and admitted that the design flaw lay in the close proximity of the bulb to the oven compartment.

The product, in the report: Microwave Oven
The consumer says that the door handle is connected to the door at each end of the handle by a metallic-looking block. They are made of flimsy hollow plastic. Both blocks crumbled during the first incident.
During the second incidennt, a piece of one of the blocks fell onto the range burner below. If something had been cooking in a pot on that burner, the plastic would have gotten into the food, presenting a choking hazard.
The handles should be recalled so the blocks can be replaced with real metal material.
The second incident occured in August.
Photographs of the handle and block as well as of the detached piece are attached.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Gold Microwave / Convection Oven - Stainless Steel - Over the Stove/Oven
This is regarding a Whirlpool Gold microwave/convection oven (model number GMH6185XVS0) that I purchased on Sept 30, 2009.
I was making dinner and went to quickly heat something up in the microwave. Immediately I noticed that the microwave was louder and then it made a weird electrical zap kind of noise. I opened the door wondering if there was something metal in the microwave, there wasn’t. I proceeded to remove the packaging that the food was on and put it on a paper plate and tried to reheat it again. This time, the microwave appeared fine (no loud noise or zap). The problem, however, is that the food didn’t heat up. I tried a few more times with no result.
The next day, my husband tried to reheat something in a microwave-safe dish and had the same loud noise and zap. We decided to unplug the microwave and call Whirlpool.
The Whirlpool rep stated they were not able to troubleshoot microwaves over the phone. The only thing suggested was to switch off and on the breaker. I was given names to service repair companies, which I called. According to the repairman, it appears that the issue is related to an open High Voltage circuit within the microwave (zap noise) and the magnetron. They are coming out to repair the microwave at a cost of approximately $200.
While obviously frustrated by purchasing such an expensive appliance only to have major problems less than 2 years later, I was mortified to see similar issues posted by consumers like myself across the web.
This issue appears to be more than an occasional glitch and Whirlpool should acknowledge the issue and repair these microwaves!
I called Whirlpool back after learning more. Whirlpool said that there were no product recalls on this item. The third customer service rep I spoke with stated something to the effect that there were some issues with the model # I owned, but wouldn’t explain further other than to say that my particular issue was not covered.
I acknowledged Whirlpool’s response that consumers post things on websites that they cannot control nor take action on without talking to the consumer. According to many of the posts, however, people are contacting Whirlpool and are getting nowhere, so I then asked the customer service rep if she could search specific model numbers and see what issues consumers have been calling about to verify if there is a pattern. She said that a search like that is possible. When I asked if she would do such a search, she said that that is not part of her job, however, she would document my suggestion. I asked her, if in her opinion, anyone would pursue this request and she said that it is logged in my record. Asking her again, she said that would send the request to her supervisor. I am not confident, however, that anyone within Whirlpool will look into this.
I was asked by Whirlpool what I wanted out of my call to them. I stated that the bottom line was that it appeared the trouble I have with my microwave is echoed across the web by other consumers and doesn’t seem to be an isolated problem. Because the rep didn’t have any specific knowledge of the incidents, I wanted them to do their own measurable searches to verify or dispute the information (as stated above). Based on their findings, than pursue to rectify the situation, and if they found a pattern of similar issues, for them to publicly acknowledge the issue and repair the microwaves.
I paid a large sum of money for a microwave/convection oven purchased less than 2 years ago that is no longer working properly and is potentially a hazard to myself and other consumers and feel that Whirlpool has a responsibility to find out if that is true or not.
For our family, we’ve learned an expensive lesson, and won’t be buying from Whirlpool again unless they get their act together and start caring about the quality of products they produce and the consumers that purchase them.
