The product, in the report: 30in W 1.7 cu. ft Over the range Microwave with 1000-Watts Cooking Power - WMMS3130RZ-Fingerprint Resistant Stainless Steel
The bottom plastic piece supporting the microwave door keeps breaking in the same spot. This has happened to multiple people using the same microwave model. When the plastic breaks, the glass door is left unsupported when opening, creating a potential safety hazard. The microwave was being used normally, with the door opened and closed during regular use. No injuries have been reported at this time. However, there is a potential risk of injury because the glass door is left unsupported when opening.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool hood/vent combination microwave. We didnt purchase it from a retailer, we purchased a brand new mobile home and it came with all new whirlpool appliances.
I have a whirlpool hood vent combination microwave, less than 2 years old. It is arcing on top but inside the housing of the microwave. The wire that is arcing is turning bright red and smells like electrical burning. Its definitely a fire hazard. Especially being under wooden cabinets.

Fire started in Whirlpool microwave hood combination microwave. Model GMH6185, manufactured November 2011. Was using microwave as usual to heat up almond butter and within 3 seconds of running the microwave, it started fire. Glowing orange and making a strange noise. No one hurt Made May 8, 2026, sent to the company May 13, 2026, published by CPSC May 28, 2026
The product, in the report: Over stove mounted Microwave oven.
Microwave had flames coming out of the exhaust behind the control panel and filled the house with smoke. I grabbed a fire extinguisher and sprayed in the exhaust opening and then disconnected and removed the microwave. The fire was very sudden and had I not been able to quickly put it out it would have caused major damage. It was mounted above the stove and we have oak cabinets on three sides. The unit was about two years old and out of warranty. I called Whirlpool and told them what happened. They had a local company look at the unit. They said the high voltage transformer had caught on fire. Whirlpool offered to give me a prorated credit on a new Whirlpool microwave. I had already bought another unit that was not a Whirlpool. My fear is that this model is defective and other units may have a defective transformer and could catch fire resulting in a loss of property and possibly injury.

The product, in the report: The product is a Whirlpool LowProfile OvertheRange Microwave Oven, model WML55011HS. It is stainless steel in color and designed to fit under standard 30inch cabinets. The approximate dimensions are 29.9 inches wide, 10.3 inches high, and 18 inches deep. The unit has a 1.1 cubicfoot interior capacity and includes a round glass turntable. It is intended for standard household microwave cooking and reheating.
A Whirlpool lowprofile overtherange microwave (model WML55011HS) caught on fire during normal household use. Flames were visible inside the microwave, and after it cooled we discovered that the interior metal cavity was burned and the glass turntable had partially melted. An adult in the home immediately shut the unit off when the flames appeared. No lasting injuries occurred, but the noxious burnt odor and smoke caused throat irritation and headaches while we ventilated the home. Despite the fire, the microwave continued to operate, and the incident could have caused a kitchen fire if it had continued without being shut off manually. The product is now unsafe to use.

No one hurt Made Dec 1, 2025, sent to the company Dec 8, 2025, published by CPSC Dec 22, 2025
The product, in the report: WHIRLPOOL Model No: WMC30516HB 0 MANUFACTURED MAY 2023 Household Microwave Oven Black
I am writing to report a very serious and dangerous incident that occurred on November 30, 2025, my Whirlpool microwave Mode No. WMC35016HB 0 experienced a dangerous internal fire while I was using it normally. I had placed food in a [REDACTED] plastic container to heat it. While washing dishes at the sink, I heard a strange noise coming from that area loud enough that my cat ran. I walked over, removed my container, and inspected the inside of the microwave. Everything looked normal and there was no sign of a problem. Because I wasnt sure where the noise came from, I decided to test the microwave empty to see if the noise had come from the microwave itself. I closed the door, set it for one minute, and pressed Start. The microwave burst into flames immediately the moment I pressed Start, even with nothing inside it. There had been strange noises in the past, which I thought were coming from the turntable, but I now believe these noises were early signs of an internal electrical problem. This incident has left me deeply shaken. The fire happened instantly and without warning. If I had not been standing right there when it ignited, this could have turned into a full house fire. I could have lost everything. This experience has genuinely traumatized me. I am now afraid to leave a microwave or even my toaster unattended. I no longer feel safe using kitchen appliances after witnessing how suddenly this fire started. I am also extremely concerned that this could happen to someone else. If this defect occurs when a person steps away even briefly, the consequences could be devastating. This is a serious safety hazard that needs immediate attention. I am asking Whirlpool to respond promptly in writing with how you will address this dangerous incident and what steps you will take moving forward. I want to resolve this directly with Whirlpool and ensure no other consumer experiences what I went through. Thank you, [REDACTED] No. However, I experienced significant emotional distress due to the incident. I am now afraid to leave my microwave and even my toaster unattended, and I feel unsafe using kitchen appliances. The fire left me traumatized, and I am constantly worried that another appliance could catch fire.

No one hurt Made Sep 24, 2025, sent to the company Sep 29, 2025, published by CPSC Nov 25, 2025
The product, in the report: Microwave/countertop but built-in
I bought a new house in 2021 that had a built-in WHIRLPOOL Microwave manufactured in 2020, Model #WNC30516HZ0 - Serial #XVX2900584. It worked ok for about a couple of years. Then, one day, I placed a ramen dish into the microwave for 4 minutes, as I had done before with the same dish, without problem - but this time after about a couple of minutes, the microwave seemed to have exploded. I smelled the smoke and immediately ran to the microwave and tore the door open. There were flames on the inside, thick black smoke was escaping from it and from the surrounding cabinets that it was installed in [it’s still in there]. Despite my panic, I somehow was able to stop the flames crawling up the inside walls. After I opened all windows and doors to clear out the smoke, I tried to clean up but the inside of the microwave would not get clean and is still totally burned and brown today. I was lucky the house did not catch fire! It was a traumatic event for me and I did not even want to use any microwave for a while. But recently, I advised the Whirlpool Corporation of the situation and asked for a replacement and the cost of removing and reinstalling a new microwave into the same kitchen cabinets. They only offered me 50% toward the cost of a new (cheap) microwave which I did not accept. I believe this is a dangerous product and the fact that it exploded out of nowhere could have caused much damage. I believe the company should stand behind their product and not hide behind a warranty that doesn’t even apply in this case. This product cannot be repaired, it is simply a dangerous product to even be on the market. All I want is a fair replacement.

No one hurt Made Nov 10, 2024, sent to the company Nov 13, 2024, published by CPSC Nov 27, 2024
The product, in the report: It is a Whirlpool 1.6 cubic foot microwave/hood combo unit. Black in color with stainless steel front trim.
My Wife was using the microwave to melt some butter in a plastic container and when it turned on it immediately started electrically arcing under the glass turntable and she promptly turned it off. We then looked inside and the plastic turntable gear was all burt with black marks and you could see and smell smoke. After doing some quick internet research Whirlpool has had recalls for this exact issue in the past on with these microwave hood combo devices manufactured between 2014-2016. This particular one was manufactured in August 2021 in China.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Microwave, Black on Stainless Model: WMC50522H Manufactured August 2019 https://www.whirlpool.com/kitchen/cooking/microwaves/countertop/p.2.2-cu.-ft.-countertop-microwave-with-1,200-watt-cooking-power.wmc50522hz.html From their site: 2.2 cu. ft. Capacity, Sensor Cooking, 1,200-Watt Cooking Power, Recessed Glass Turntable, Microwave Built-In Trim Kit (Optional) Depth 19-5/8 in, Gross Weight 68 lbs, Height 12-9/16 in, Width 24 in
Whirlpool needs to immediately recall and provide safe replacements for their microwave Model WMC50522H. It poses a fire risk. After using the microwave, I noticed a humming sound as if the microwave was running. However, the clock was showing the current time, the cooking timer was not on, and the microwave light was not on as it is while heating food. I opened the door and the humming stopped. I heated a food item by setting a cook timer and pressing start and it heated appropriately for the set time (with the light on, turntable rotating, and cooking timer counting down). Upon removing the food and shutting the door, the humming sound started again. I placed food in the microwave and simply shut the door (without pressing a cooking timer or start) and immediately the food started heating and smoking despite the microwave only showing the clock, lights off, and turntable not moving. The microwave was not set to heat food, but it was heating food. Now, the only way to prevent the microwave from running is to keep the door open. This is not a good option as the light remains on and becomes warm (plus, who wants to leave their microwave door open when not in use?). Whirlpool needs to fix this problem immediately and offer replacements. A quick [REDACTED] search shows that this is not an isolated problem and others have experienced the exact same issue. Please remedy asap. Thanks! https://www.whirlpool.com/kitchen/cooking/microwaves/countertop/p.2.2-cu.-ft.-countertop-microwave-with-1,200-watt-cooking-power.wmc50522hz.html

The product, in the report: Whirlpool over range microwave. Model WMH73521CS Serial number TR 6 16 15301
Whirlpool microwave had sparks and flames coming from hole inside of microwave. When I checked this model on the internet it showed that the microwave was under a recall. I contacted Whirlpool, they sent out a tech and he said that the microwave was not under recall. I attempted again to contact Whirlpool, but they did not answer. I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and received a call from [REDACTED] at Whirlpool. He then told me even tho the microwave I have has the same model number as the recall, the serial number is not included in the recall. The very thing that happened to my microwave is what the recall was about. He claims that this is “just a coincidence”.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool WOC54EC0HS microwave/oven combo, 6.1 kw 208V 3 phase; 7.5 kw 240V 60 Hz
The Whirlpool microwave/oven combo built in unit, model WOC54EC0HS, is a safety hazard. The oven will not turn off when pressing the oven button twice, there is no off button clearly labeled. I had it set at 400F and when I determined my food was done, it would not shut off. The manual states the fan will continue to blow so I waited almost 30 minutes but the oven stayed hot. This is a fire waiting to happen and I will not use this oven again.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Microwave slim fit. Stainless steel/black. it is the corner of the door at bottom right edge that is razor sharp and swings open into the Owner’s body space, that can contact the person’s body and cut them with the sharp bottom edge.
#1- physical injury! My WHIRLPOOL microwave, model WML55011HS-2, has on several occasions cut me horizontally along my neck/chin when the door is opened or closed. The door bottom edge is very very sharp and pointed. Initially, I was kinda shocked as I have never had anything like this happen, but it has happened several times and to other people who have used it, therefore I feel it is a unsafe design that can cause injury. I am not sure why they would have such a razor sharp pointed edge on the door that opens into the customers body space. This design will cut/hit people in different places on their body depending on that person’s height. For preteens will be on their face and head, for me it was on my neck as I am 5’5” tall. Serious design flaw!! #2) I have found some black spots that i cannot explain in my microwave that does not come off...I am wondering if it is some form of Arching??
Thank you. I finally decided to report this because I do not believe this is a customer caused issue..I beleive it is a design flaw.

Our Whirlpool 1.9-cu.-ft.-smart-over-the-range-microwave-with-scan-to-cook-technology (wmh78019hz) experienced a computer board/sensor failure while in use. It failed to turn on its automatic vent hood while water was being boiled below it on a gas range. This caused heat damage to the unit itself, which we noticed when we opened the door to the microwave oven and chunks of plastic dropped into pots below. The door is broken and warped. We unplugged the unit and contacted Whirlpool. They have other microwaves on RECALL for what sounds like a similar failure/fire hazard but stated this microwave was not yet reported for such issues.

A Whirlpool microwave was sparking and generated a burning smell. Whirlpool replaced a defective part but the issue has re-occurred. Once again, the Whirlpool is sparking and it eminates a burning insulation burning smell.
There was smoke damage/burning in the bottom of a kitchen cabinet that is directly above the microwave. Specifically, a hole is drilled in the cabinet above the microwave so as to allow an exit point for the electrical cord, which was then plugged into an outlet housed in the cabinet. Given there were burn marks on the underside of cabinet, I would not rule it could ignite and cause a fire.

Even when the microwave was not in use the smell continued to get stronger over the next couple of hours, so we shut off the breaker that goes to it. It is the microwave that came with our [REDACTED] house that was built in 2014), and we bought the home in July 2016. I purchased a new Whirlpool over the range microwave and within less than 3.5 months it caught fire. I was warming coffee in a microwave safe mug for 30 seconds when I heard a noise and noticed a faint burning plastic smell. The coffee was warm and the microwave seemed fine so I assumed that it was not a major issue. Later in the day, I decided to use my microwave to cook some vegetables. I turned it on and in less than 30 seconds there was smoke pouring out of the vents - even though the oven cavity and the food was fine. I immediately turned the oven off and pulled out a step stool to look into the vents. Smoke was still coming out and from my view - there was a visible fire on the wires inside the mechanics of the oven. I tried to put it out with water but ultimately used baking soda to douse the flames. I unplugged the oven and tried to examine the area to ensure that the oven had no other visible flames.

Microwaving a small potato on a small microwavable plate. Used the potato auto-sense feature on the microwave, selecting a small, single potato, pressed start. it was cooking for several minutes when I came back into the room and saw flames and smoke coming from the potato Flames were rolling to the top and left side. The microwave was still running and did not shut off. I selected the cancel button. I left the microwave closed for about another of minute until the flames subsided. The smoke continued to get heavier and was escaping from the microwave. I opened the microwave and removed the burnt food and plate to the outside of the house. During that several minutes the kitchen filled with smoke and the entire house had a smoky smell. It took several hours to remove the smoke and several days to remove the odor. The potato plate were was severely burnt and the plate broke when moved. A plastic cover on the upper inside of the microwave was discolored and had obviously been melted. I replaced the microwave as I don’t trust it anymore.

NOT due to any misuse of any kind. It did it during one of its “power cycles”. this microwave was sold right before the verified recall dates (same manufacturer also) now I’m at loss of whether it is still safe for use. The product, in the report: Product:………….…..Whirlpool Corporation Microwave Oven Hood Combination Model:…………….…..WMH32519HZ-3 Serial Number:……..TR82382849 Manufacture Date:..June 2018
Reason for reporting: A major fire was almost started in my kitchen because I did not remove the manufacture supplied built in shelf prior to use and there are no safety warning about this from the manufacture also manufacture is aware of potential risk to injury and of fire damage also the exact location of inner cavity damage.
Well using my microwave oven like I normal do one day as soon as I enabled the microwave magnetron by press the “Start” button to heat up a frozen hot packet I was exposed to a lighting show inside my microwave from the magnetron discharging electrostatic electricity throughout the inside cavity of my microwave. Thankfully I was standing in-front of the microwave to notice the problem as soon as it began so I was able to deenergize the magnetron by opening the microwave oven door, before it was able to start a fire in my kitchen. There is now a hole tord the back right side panel on the internal cavity exposing the Microwave Oven internal circuitry witch has rendered it unusable ever again.
I contacted my Home Developer warranty associate about the event, and I was directed to contact Whirlpool warranty services directly. When I contacted Whirlpool they right away wanted to know if the was any fire damage do to the event after describing to them what had happened. The Whirlpool warranty associate then proceeded to ask me the following questions
• Q1 Is the Microwave oven plugged into a ground protected fault circuit? • A1 Yes it is plugged into a fault protected circuit with a combination Ground/Arc fault protected circuit breaker.
• Q2 What other kitchen appliances or devices are plugged into the same circuit has the microwave this includes other electrical outlets connected to the same circuit? • A2 No there are no other appliances or devices plugged into the same circuit and that the microwave have it’s own dedicated circuit.
• Q3 What was I heating up in the microwave at the time of the event and was I using a microwave plate? • A3 I was heading up a pizza [REDACTED] on a microwave porcelain dish plate.
• Q4 I was asked if I removed the internal built-in shelf before turning / using the microwave? • A4 No why would I remove it then I would have to find a place to store it.
The Whirlpool warranty associate then indicated to me the damage is my fault and therefor not covered under the warranty because I used the Microwave Oven without first removing the internal built in shelf. Also the associate knew the exact spot the electric static discharged had burned a hole through the microwave oven internal cavity.
I told the Whirlpool warranty associate that if the microwave could not be used with the manufactured supplied built in shelf then otherwise risk starting a fire then they should of provided a bright red or yellow sticker on the inside microwave door and a bright red or yellow tag attached the shelf warning consumers it had to be removed before use and that there is a risk of fire damage if it is not removed.
The associate told me Whirlpool did warn me in the Operations and that Whirlpool recommends all consumers read the manual before using their appliances.
After witch I downloaded the PDF and read the safety instructions and there was no mention of a damage or fire risk by not removi0ng the internal built in shelf before use but I did find on page 4 under Features in column 1 paragraph 2 the following statement.
• Cooking RackUse the rectangular cooking rack only for 2-level cooking. To avoid damage to the microwave oven, always remove rack after 2-level cooking. To avoid damage to the microwave oven due to soil buildup, clean rack supports often

I placed a microwave popcorn bag into the microwave a few days ago and when it inflated it pushed the wire shelf up and back at an angle. When the timer was up, I took the bag out and noticed in the back of the microwave that where the shelf had rubbed while it traveled, there were dark marks even though the shelf has a stainless steel finish. I thought maybe it was just from rubbing but it did not clean off. It was like it was burned on and they look like burn marks. They also do not seem like scrape marks as they partially came off. Today, I tried cleaning the microwave by using a wet paper towel to wet the inside surfaces (not the shelf) and then ran the microwave for 3 minutes. I figured the water would heat up and vaporize, leaving any dirt to be easily wiped off. When the timer was up, I started wiping down the inside of the microwave and accidentally brushed up against the wire shelf and was burned - I believe they are 2nd degree burns and I have pictures. I had no idea the wire shelf would get that hot. Though removable, it is part of the internals of the microwave and it makes no sense to have something that dangerous included in the design. It is very unsafe. I also tried to wipe the burn marks off and the 3-min heating did not help. I also tried lightly rubbing with a [REDACTED] pad and they did not come off. There is some serious heat buildup in the wire rack of this microwave that is enough to burn skin and leave burn marks on the sides of the microwave if it ends up touching the sides. I am not sure why I did not notice it before now.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool over the range microwave (WMH31017AS) purchased 7/8/16
In March 2020, about 3 days after being issued a stay at home order in Ohio, my less-than-four-year-old microwave (Whirlpool over the range microwave (WMH31017AS))began catching things on fire. I was not using anything new in the microwave. It ignited a paper towel and a paper plate on 2 separate occasions. I had regularly used these same brands of these items since I got the appliance. They were not new packages. The day before I used a paper towel from the same roll with zero problems. Thankfully I was right there and saw it happen and was able to put the fires out with water.
I called their customer service where I was advised to turn the power level down. WHAT? The power level must be changed every time you use the microwave. What if I forgot and walked away? I could have burned my house down. Ridiculous.
I have had the appliance unplugged since I do not feel safe using it and I will be replacing.

Just over one year ago, the Whirlpool microwave WMH53520CS that was purchased was part of a bundle from Spencer’s Appliance in Oct 2016, caught on fire while baking a potato. The unit was deemed out of warranty, and a countertop replacement was loaned by family until a new comparable, over the range model, could be purchased. Today while looking at a comparable unit, it was discovered that this unit was recalled, but the serial on this unit TR62593566 was out of the range of recalled units. There was a significant fire, internal to the unit, and smoke and heat damage to the surrounding cabinets. The unit is still in place, as it was when the fire occured, and can be inspected for verification that the problem occurred with the unit. We feel that the unit should be replaced by Whirlpool ]and want others to know that this problem likely impacts units outside their given serial number range.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool household microwave oven, stainless steel, Model # WMH31017AS-3. Microwave was installed by builder in new home development - Oak Meadows Phase 2 - Battleground, WA by Osprey Homes.
We had just placed 2 potatoes in the microwave to begin cooking them. After about 3-4 minutes of cooking, my wife noticed some odd sounds coming from the microwave, while it was still running. She was 5-6 feet away, and didn’t think much of it. Around 10 seconds later, smoke began billowing out the front top vent of the microwave, and out the back vent to the outside. I quickly recognized the smell as an electrical fire as I have smelled that many times due to the nature of my job. I stopped the microwave, shut off power to the microwave, and called 911. The fire department was there within 5 minutes. They shut off the breaker to the microwave circuit, and began checking the temperature of the microwave. Their FLIR camera found the location of the arcing and burning was from the top right side of the microwave where the electrical components were, so they began removing the top front vent panel of the microwave to access that location. Once that was removed, and the metal cover that blocks the electrical compartment, they could visually see (with the naked eye and with the temperature of components with the FLIR camera) locations on the top and side panels where the components had experienced arcing and slight burning. The Fire Chief said we were very lucky that the event stayed contained and did not spread to the cabinets around it, as the wood cabinets directly next to it were very hot as well when they arrived.
Description of Risk or Harm – Electrical fire originated inside electrical component bay on top of microwave. Two sources of oxygen are present to this area 1) rear of microwave passes through the wall with exposed drywall and other combustible material before exiting the home as a vent to the outer wall/siding, and 2) top front of microwave has a vent that directly comes in contact with cabinets on top and side. If electricity of the microwave is not removed immediately when the electrical fire began, spreading of the fire either direction would result in the house/combustibles catching fire which would lead to a fully engulfed house fire. Refer to your previous recall for similar microwaves - https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2016/whirlpool-recalls-microwaves, and you will see that the incident that occurred to us matches this to a T, and also fits into the incidents section, which I have attached below.
The investigation performed by the 3rd party appliance technician proved that this was a fire caused by a manufacturers defect, and the fire chief that inspected the damage concluded that the lone reason that this fire did not spread was due to the electricity being removed immediately. If both of these reports are correct, which there is no reason for them not to be, this is a SAFETY HAZARD for each home that contains one. I urge you to reconsider this as the risk of harm is the complete loss of house and possibly life.
Thank You,
[REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Over the Range Microwave with range hood
My whirlpool over the range microwave has melted a hole on the interior rectangular plastic piece on the top of the microwave. After some research, this model was included in a recall from 2016, WMH53520CS but my serial number TR45157865 was not part of that recall. There must be something wrong with the mechanical workings of this microwave for this plastic piece to melt like it has. My fear is that if this plastic piece gets hot enough it could possibly catch fire. There is also the possibility that whatever is causing the plastic to melt is also causing additional damage that is not visible to the eye unless taken apart. I do not want to see this cause a fire because Whirlpool is making defective products. The manufactured date is Decemeber 2014.

The product, in the report: A white Whirlpool Microwave oven that is installed under a hood over a conventional electric stove
Whirlpool under the hood microwave oven started up by itself. I could not shut it off. None of the controls worked. I could not find the plug which was buried behind a lot of jars in a kitchen cupboard above the microwave. I had to turn off a circuit breaker in the basement in order to get it stopped. If we had not been home, this could have overheated and started a fire. We did not get the microwave repaired because we can not trust it in the future. We replaced it with another brand of microwave.

The product, in the report: Over the Range Microwave
Caller is reporting that his spouse placed the timer on the microwave and walked away about a few mins later she heard a loud pop and noticed that there was smoke which developed in flames inside the wall of the unit. He used the fire extinguisher to contain the flames. Caller has since removed the unit and stored it outside. The unit was already installed in the new home when he purchased it in 2014.
Caller stated that there was minor smoke damages to the cabinets. 6/11/18 The manufacturer was contacted and they advised that a service technician would be sent out. 6/13 Technician came out and advised that the microwave could not be repaired. The technician after speaking with the company diagnosed that it was user error.
Caller stated that the company will be providing a reimbursement of $225 for the unit which they will pick up.
Caller is concerned that the microwave is a fire hazard without using it for heating or cooking purposes. They had only used the timer on it which caused the incident.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool WMC50522AS Microwave
Whirlpool microwave WMC50522as is partly stuck on, creating a fire hazard. When the appliance ends a cycle, the turntable and fan stop, but the microwave heater is still operating. When in this mode, the microwave heater runs whenever the door is closed.
This happened last Christmas, but we assumed my wife didn’t program the cook power correctly. However, since then we have notice that when cooking a less than 100% power, the heating doesn’t cycle. So you are always cooking at 100% power. Today, the oven is worse in that anytime the door is closed, it heats (but no fan or turntable).
Because there is no control on the heat, a simple 10-second cycle could turn into hours if someone gets distracted and doesn’t notice. This could cause the internal circuits or the food to catch fire.
I am in the process of reporting to Whirlpool.

House almost burned down last night - I had fallen asleep and my wife heard a beeping coming from the kitchen... She went to check on the random sound before going to bed and realized it was coming from our Whirlpool microwave. She saw that the clock display was blank and went to check, finding that the top of the microwave and the plate on top was all red hot to the touch! She unplugged it and moved it away from everything. Seriously, I know that it had served us well for 12 years with never an issue, but to almost burn the house down is crazy! If we had gone to bed early it is highly probable that there would have been a much worse outcome than simply needing to shop for a new microwave... !!!

It did not appear to be running, (turntable not turning, light off) but when we opened the micro door, the buzzing stopped, and the turntable was hot to the touch. We had cooked peas about 20 minutes earlier, so we thought it might be just still warn from that (although it seemed much hotter than we’d expect). In order to eliminate this possibility, we placed a quart of cold tap water in a glass dish. A few minutes of buzzing later, we opened and found that the water had raised to 150F degrees.

Our Whirlpool Microwave was arcing/sparking and we were told today by a repairman that it was a factory defect and is dangerous to continue using. It needs to be replaced.
This is the same model that has already been recalled by Whirlpool. It is model # WMH53520CS. However, our serial number is not part of the current recall. Our unit was manufactured in April 2015 and purchased at home depot in the summer of 2015. Our unit’s serial number is TR51733229. I believe this recall should be expanded to include all units under this model number due to serious fire and safety concerns.
We also paid a repairman $95 to inform us of the cause of this issue and hope that government regulations can require Whirlpool to cover and reimburse those costs paid by the consumer in relation to these units. Thank you.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool WMC20005YD 0.5 Cu. Ft. Stainless Look Countertop Microwave - 17 x 17.5 x 17.5 inches
I purchased our microwave in July 2015. We have used our microwave regularly until yesterday, 1-10-17. We were using it to pop a bag of popcorn in the usual, recommended fashion. Suddenly we heard a loud sound and there was a flame inside the microwave on the cardboard panel wall. There was no metal in the microwave to create a spark. This incident occurred during completely normal use. We are no longer using the microwave, obviously. I decided to search Amazon reviews on this product’s page containing the word FIRE. Apparently, this has happened to others in the exact same spot as ours. There seems to be an issue with that cardboard panel because user pictures of the burn marks look nearly identical to ours.

Although this does not occur every time, the consumer estimates it happens about once every three times the microwave is turned on.
The consumer states that she uses her unit on average at least once a day. The consumer plans on keeping the unit for at least the next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.

The product, in the report: Model number WMC30516AW0 Micro White counter top model 1.6CF
We bought a Whirlpool Microwave Model Number WMC30516AW0 from HH Greg on 5.10.16. On 8.31.16 the microwave began throwing blue sparks when turned on. We took it back to HH Greg and the manager on duty replace the mircowave with the same model at no charge. On 10.11.16 the second microwave stopped cooking food. I was heating a steamable bag of broccoli and after 5 1/2 minutes the bag was still icey, but when I touched the interior and exterior of the microwave in the location the first microwave was throwing blue sparks, it burnt my finger tips. I feel confident if I were to have cooked something longer the microwave would have caught on fire. I contacted HH Greg and they stated it is a manufactures defect and I should call Whirlpool. I then contacted Whirlpool, explained the situation and are now waiting on a phone call within 24 to 48 hours to talk with someone about replacing the unit with a different model. There is something electronically wrong with this model.
Incident Date: 8.31.16 and 10.11.16

The product, in the report: Microwave Oven
The following happens with this microwave if it is operated for more than 5-6 minutes in one cooking cycle: 1) If you happen to open the door while the oven is running, the oven will not turn off. 2) When the oven finishes its cooking cycle; when I open the door the light will not turn on. 3) If we try to start another cooking cycle, the oven will no run and it displays that the door is not closed when actually the door is closed. I looked inside the micro and this oven has [REDACTED] limit switches used for the door and light safety switches. I work in the Nuclear Power Field, the company I work for received a letter from [REDACTED] instructing us to stop using their limit switch in a radiation environment. I consider this a radiation environment also and a hazard to the oven operator. I did contact Whirlpool about this issue they take my information, pass me to another office and place me on hold. That office takes my information, passes me to another office and places me on hold. This is were I end up on hold.
