The product, in the report: Samsung over the range microwave Model # SMH9207ST Serial # J4MY7WOC70071K
Samsung over the oven microwave would not respond to STOP/CLEAR and continued running after only 30 seconds of use. I opened the door and the interior was hot to touch but after a few more attempts to shut off, the power went completely out. The interior light did not come on when the door was opened and the digital clock was out. I assumed it threw the circuit breaker and I did not attempt to restart it as I was concerned that the unit was unstable and hot. After spending the next 35 minutes upstairs, I came down to find it running and something was definitely burning. I opened the microwave door and part of the inside door panel had melted onto the interior. It was extremely hot and would not shut off manually so I had to unplug it from within a cabinet above the unit. I have reported it to Samson and they have a ticket number ( 5114039195) associated with the report. I looked on line at the incidences of various makes and models that have been reported spontaneously starting while families were sleeping or away at work with entire kitchens burned. Please look closely at the number of occurrences and find a means of more closely inspecting the dangers these appliances pose before approving passing their safety standards.

The product, in the report: microwave, silver samsung brand
I have a samsung microwave, and when you open the door it seems to be running. The light, and fan turn on. (the turntable is broken so iit doesnt turn on. I want to make sure that it isnt actually cooking when it is on. I put a bunch of tinfoil in the microwave, and opened it very slightly so it would run, and nothing happened. I also tried this with water and the water didnt heat so i am pretty sure that it is not actually runnning but i would rather be safe than sorry.

The product, in the report: Above-the-Stove Microwave Professionally installed
The consumer indicates that she was away on vacation for eight days and her home was left alone. When the consumer came back home, she noticed the microwave was running - indicating that it was cooking baked potatoes. The consumer touched the glass door and it was very hot. The consumer proceeded to hit the stop button and the microwave turned off. Two or three minutes later, the unit came back on again by itself. The consumer opened the door and it shut off; the glass turntable was very hot. The consumer added had she not arrived home when she did, there would have been a fire.
The consumer unplugged the unit for some time. Approximately half hour later, the consumer plugged the unit back in and reset the clock as the unit does not function without it. Everything seemed fine until the unit came back on again indicating that it was baking potatoes. The consumer unplugged the unit immediately. The consumer indicates that this happened approximately three more times that night. The unit was left unplugged overnight.
The next day the consumer plugged the unit back on but this time the clock would not reset. Error code: SE was on display and the consumer could not get her microwave to function at all.
03/08/2016 - The consumer contacted the manufacturer and explained the situation. The representative she spoke to informed her that they would send a Service Technician to inspect her unit. The consumer noted according to web search, this is a known issue with many complaints, why no recall?
03/09/2016 - The consumer received a call from the manufacturer’s Product Safety Department wanting to know if anybody had been hurt, or if there were any damages to the unit or her home. The consumer asked if they would replace the microwave altogether and she was informed that they could not do that so long as the unit was still reparable. The consumer noted she is unplugging the microwave when she goes out, because the repair person said it could happen again. The consumer asked, “What if the microwave did not catch on fire?” The consumer stated she is fearful that this could happen again, even though it was repaired.
03/11/2016 - The Service Technician inspected and repaired the microwave by replacing its control panel. The Service Technician indicated that he could not guarantee the problem would not happen again. The consumer states that she incurred no charges for the service nor the part; the control panel comes with either a sixty or nine-day warranty.
The consumer indicates that the unit was installed professionally, and that it is not included in a warranty any longer.

The product, in the report: Samsung over the range microwave oven
After heating food in my Samsung OTR the door was opened and the food was removed when the microwave door was closed (with no settings selected) a hum was heard coming from the microwave. After hearing the hum I opened the door again and the hum stopped when closed again the hum continued then started to smell electrical wire burning. I unplugged the microwave and opened the door and noticed the microwave plate was very hot to the touch. Then I called Samsung support for help.

The product, in the report: 1 kW, 1.7 cubic ft, black over-the-range microwave FCC ID: A3LOTR17M3
After closing the door to our Samsung SMH1713 over-range microwave, there was a noticeable buzzing noise coming from the unit. We purchased this microwave from Best Buy online in August 2013, and I installed it myself, replacing a unit that was at least 10 years old, but probably closer to 15 or 20. The buzzing noise was worrisome, and some investigation -- primarily with a [REDACTED] cup filled with cold water -- showed that as soon as the door is closed, the magnetron turns on at full power. The time cook controls turn on the oven light and turntable, but do not affect the continuous operation of the magnetron. The power settings do not seem to modulate the duty cycle of the magnetron, either. The only way to turn off the microwave is to open the door (this stops the buzzing and heating) or to unplug the unit, of course. If the door is closed, as soon as the microwave is plugged in, the magnetron turns on. This seems to be a pretty significant safety issue: the high-voltage DC modulation circuit to the 1 kW RF generator seems to fail-ON, leaving the (hopefully mechanical and fail-safe) door interlock as the only actual safety circuit. Though the chamber is metal and the turntable (one hopes) is heat-tempered glass, the turntable drive is plastic and rubber, and possibly flammable. The oven has had only light household use for 2.5 years. I have contacted Samsung service, and am scheduled to have a technician come out to investigate the problem on Monday, 2/22. The estimated charges run $90 for diagnosis and $75/hour for repairs, plus parts costs. The magnetron specifically is under warranty, but I am not sure if that would apply to the control circuit as well. The unit cost $240, and $165 minimum for repairs seems hardly worth it, given that the circuit that failed would likely only be replaced, and the underlying safety issue unaddressed.

The product, in the report: Samsung Microwave. Model Number SMH1816S
I purchased a new Samsung microwave from Lowes approximately 2 years ago. When I removed food from the appliance and shut the door, the heating component of the microwave then turned itself back on. The light does not turn on when the door is shut so there is no indicator of an issue. Luckily I did hear it running and immediately unplugged it. The current status of the Samsung microwave is that it must remain unplugged at all times due to an extreme fire hazard. To make this very clear, whenever the microwave door is closed, it instantly begins heating up and does not turn off unless the door is opened or the appliance is unplugged. Samsung has been incredibly difficult and is making me responsible for repair costs. I have read online hundreds of others stating the same issues with Samsung microwaves.

The product, in the report: Over the range microwave oven
Samsung OTR microwave oven changes settings without touching the keypad. I’m afraid that it will turn itself on when I’m not at home. The lights change brightness, the turntable turns on and off and some cooking modes are selected when no one is in the kitchen. The only thing it hasn’t (yet) done is start itself! During a service call, the entire keypad, dimply and circuit boards were replaced. The problem stopped temporarily but then returned. Now the unit is out of warranty after 1 year. What are my options.

The product, in the report: Over The Range/Hood Convection Microwave
Samsung produces various microwave products which contain a resistive/capacitive touch panel for control.
It has been noted by customers and review organizations, that these control panels malfunction causing erratic behavior.
We purchased model ME179KFETSR/AA “OTR” microwave oven in Dec. 2012 from retailer HHgregg, and were smart enough to purchase a 5 year warranty.
Repair for our microwave, for the same exact problem, has occurred three (3) times in the past, and has just recently failed again, prompting yet another service call- for the same exact problem.
To provide a sense of how serious and potentially dangerous this is, we have personally witnessed the following with our microwave:
- During the start of a cooking cycle, we were not being able to stop the process (wasted food and potential fire hazard);
- After preparing food and placing into oven, closing the door, the control panel is non-responsive (no danger, just malfunction)
- Being awoken in the middle of the night to hear the microwave beep, only to find it had prompted (on its own) the start of its cleaning cycle (potential fire hazard).
Samsung and the warranty company have repaired the unit each time, but after 3 years and new models (and the same complaints by owners), it would seem Samsung is either not acknowledging the issue or doesn’t care.
Before injury to property or life is threatened, this needs to be reviewed.
As important, the test lab hired to test/certify as to the product’s safety needs to reviewed as well.

The product, in the report: Samsung over range microwave production date is November 2010 appears to be built in Malaysia - the following address in on the product label: 42000 Pelabuhan Klang Selangor, W. Malaysia
This happening in the early morning. Microwave was beeping. An error code 5E or SE was flashing in the display. I opened the door and the tray was very warm and scorched like it was recently used. I asked my mother if she had used the microwave (she has a profound hearing loss and would not have noticed the beeping noise without her hearing aid and cochlear implant and since this was early morning, she did not have them in) and she replied no. There was no response to the touch pad. I unplugged the unit and plugged it back in and the display returned to normal (normal for when the power has been interrupted), then a few seconds later it started beeping again. I unplugged the unit and left it unplugged. I feel there may be a concern of this condition posing a possible fire hazard.

The product, in the report: Samsung over-the-stove microwave oven and range hood. model SMH9187ST
This morning, my Samsung microwave oven (model SMH9187ST) started on it’s own three times without anyone’s presence in the kitchen. I cannot confirm that it wasn’t doing this while we slept. Initially the Stop/Clear button worked to turn it off, but the third time that did not work and the door had to be opened to stop the cooking cycle. It was started in the Popcorn mode each time (a function that we do not use). Shortly after the third ghost start the microwave display showed “-- 5E --“ (or SE) and no buttons on the unit would function. Concerned about this continuing without anyone home and/or causing a fire hazard, the unit is now unplugged.

The product, in the report: Samsung SMH9187ST microwave oven
I am the owner of a Samsung SMH9187ST microwave oven. It has occasionally displayed a “SE” error code which can be cleared by removing power from the unit. Yesterday, the unit turned on with no user input and ran until the power cord was removed from the wall outlet. I am very concerned that a microwave oven that turns itself on with no user input could be at risk for overheating and fire. This is especially worrisome if no one was at home to remove power from the unit. An Internet search showed that the problems with this model of microwave oven are very common. Please investigate this issue as a possible basis for recall

The product, in the report: Samsung microwave 1.8 cu ft OTR, stainless steel front, white interior, turntable feature with glass.
Around dinner time on April 22nd, my 18 year old son used our Samsung microwave #SMH1816S to reheat a piece of pizza on a plate as usual. There was no incident or concerns at that time.
The morning of April 23rd, we awoke to the smell of burning metal and a film in the air on the main level of our home. Upon opening the microwave, there was some black ash spread around the glass plate and in the upper back right corner was a concentrated black burn scar near the ‘fuse box’ area. When I took out the glass plate, it broke in my hand.
Upon taking the microwave off the wall (over the oven) there was a round black burn mark (~2”) on the side of the cabinet and light black streak marks around the right side of where the microwave had been. After reading about microwaves catching on fire for no apparent reason, I am suspecting that something like this may have happened. SCARY!!

The Samsung Over the Oven Microwave Model SMH1816S that we purchased in May 2013 recently began arcing and throwing sparks inside the casing (not in the food chamber, in fact we tested it with nothing in the food chamber after the initial incident and the unit continued to generate sparks). The product, in the report: Over the range Microwave. Samsung model# SMH9187ST. Stainless Steel
I purchased a Samsung over the oven Microwave model# SMH9187ST back in December 2010. The other day, the microwave flashed “Baked Potato” and turned on automatically. I was lucky I was at home. I unplugged the microwave, plugged it back in, and in about 5 min, it happened again. I checked the Internet, and this “Baked Potato” issue was all over it. I called Samsung, and they granted me a one-time accommodation to cover the labor and parts. Sounds like this is a very common problem. I will have the microwave repaired, but my concerns are that it will happen again, and I will not be home, and the microwave will catch on fire. I was hoping the CPSC could find out if my concerns are warranted, if this microwave is in fact a fire hazard, and that I should stop using it. Thank you for all of the good work [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Stainless steel over-range microwave oven.
My daughter was in the living room adjacent to the kitchen after I had gone to bed. She heard a beep in the kitchen and investigated. She found the microwave running in the dark kitchen with nobody else around. When she tried to stop it, the keypad controls were unresponsive. A code of -SE- was displayed. She unplugged the microwave and reported it to me the next morning. This is the second issue with this microwave, the first was about a year ago when one of the sensors mounted to the bottom plate behind the control panel burned up. This was discovered after the microwave stopped functioning. That part was replaced and there were no more incidents until now. We have not plugged the unit back in. Two failures on a 4 year old appliance is too many, especially considering if my daughter hadn’t decided to play some video games that night, we could have had a fire. It will be replaced by, hopefully, something without these problems.

My Samsung Microwave Oven is approximately 3 years and 7 months old. It has worked well for all this time. However I returned from a 2 day trip and was sitting in the family room and suddenly the microwave came on with the window stating POPCORN. I never use that function but it was running full blast empty which causes it to heat up very quickly without something to absorb the rays to heat. that cabinet got very hot fast. I pushed the stop/clear button and it went to time. I decided to reset it like the instructions stated by unplugging it for 10-12 seconds and then plug into power. It came on ready to set the clock again which I did. however in less than 2 minutes it came on again to POPCORN and the inside plate was turning it had full power. If this had occurred while I was gone it could have resulted in a serious kitchen fire..I have heard of the before but never thought a good product like Samsung would do that. The vendor RC WILLEY was notified of the incident. I had a 5 year warranty on it. They called back and stated that ti would cost more to fix it than to get a new one and told me to come in and pick out any brand I wanted and they would uninstall the defective one and install a new one.\ Product Information: Samsung MicroWave Oven l.8 cubic feet 1100 Watt 10 ower LV Serial #: J46W7MOZ800678R I reported this to the Samsung 800 number and they said to contact the vendor since I had a warranty.

The product, in the report: Samsung Over the Range Microwave Oven.
My Samsung SMH 9187 over the cooktop microwave oven is about 3 1/2 years old. I first got an error message SE, which is apparently very common for owners of this microwave. The keypad would no longer respond, so I unplugged the unit and contacted Samsung. They scheduled an appointment to fix the keypad (replace it, actually) but I had to stipulate that if the error could not be duplicated, I would pay for the repair. I did so, but after a week unplugged, I decided to check to see if the error was still there. It was not. On plugging in, I was able to program the time into the keypad. But within two minutes, the microwave turned itself on to cook an imaginary baked potato. The unit actually started cooking, the light came on, the turntable turned. I turned it off. But within seconds, it had turned itself on again. And it continued to do this until I unplugged it. I did this on July 18th, and tried it again today, July 22, and it did the exact same thing.

Was warming up some food in the microwave, then there was a loud explosion noise that came from the microwave followed by sparks and flame coming from the top vent of the microwave. I took the microwave down from above the stove and there was Charing on the cabinet from the flames. I called Samsung they sent out a repair man to look at the microwave. The high voltage capacitor blew up. Samsung is not taking this issue serious, as this could have burn down our house. They said it’s out of warranty, and could be repaired, and they want me to pay for it. I am more concern if this is a bigger problem that is effecting more microwaves that are being used by other consumers, were this defect could kill someone or burn their house down...after taking the cover off my self I notice that the small explosion cracked the plastic support holding the mounting screw and also the transformer connections were also burnt.

On April 5th I was cleaning up after dinner and the replacement glass exploded and glass went flying across the room, scared the crap out of me. When the light is turned on it is so hot that you can’t even touch the bottom of microwave.
Samsung is not willing to help me because I’ve had the Microwave for 1 year. I unplug the microwave when I’m not home because I’m really afraid this thing is going to catch fire.

(03/22/2014) the consumer stated that he used the microwave. He walked out of the room. He came back into the room about twenty minutes later and heard the humming coming from the microwave. He unplugged the microwave and plugged it back it. The humming continued. The consumer stated that he unplugged the microwave. He put some water in a cup and placed it in the microwave. Then he plugged the microwave back in. The consumer waited for about ten seconds, unplugged the microwave. He checked the water and the water was hot. The consumer stated that he did not push any buttons to cause the water to heat up in the microwave. The consumer stated that this is a dangerous situation because it could cause a fire.
After reporting the issue with the microwave to the CSPC and continuing to have the reported problem, Iremoved the PCB board.Upon examination,I was able to see some darkening on the PCB board in the areas labeled D106- 0109. I ordered and received a new PCB board (part# RAS-SM7MGV-07), which Iinstalled. This has corrected the issue that I was previously having with the microwave and has not re-occurred since.

I bought a Samsung Model #SMH1622W Over-the-range microwave from Best Buy and noticed that it turns on all by itself randomly without pushing any buttons. Samsung never returned my service call to get it fixed. Took it back to Best Buy. This microwave could burn someone’s house down. I noticed that others had complained about it as well. Just google “Samsung microwave turns on by itself” and you will see.

The product, in the report: Samsung under the counter microwave sold by Lowes in Seminole County, FL. FCC ID #A3LOTR16M3
We bought our Samsung MDL #SMH1611B, Serial #J5XH7MOB400946Z in November 2011. We noticed it coming on by itself in June 2013 - we don’t know HOW MANY times it came on that we DIDN’T catch it! We called Lowes, and they passed the buck to Samsung. Samsung sent out a technician that replaced the electronic key pad. I told them then that I didn’t want a repair, I wanted a replacement because I didn’t want it to come on in the middle of the night and burn my entire family to death. The microwave started flashing on and off again in November of 2013. I called the Samsung people AGAIN and spoke with an Executive Associate that offered to have the key pad replaced again and would not offer me credit so I could get another microwave. WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE???? I HAVE READ ABOUT HOUSES BURNING TO THE GROUND, PETS BEING BURNT TO DEATH - WHAT LOSS OF LIFE IS GOING TO HAVE TO HAPPEN BEFORE A TOTAL RECALL OF THIS PRODUCT OCCURS???? I want to report this incident to the HIGHEST LEVEL because I have given Samsung plenty of chances to do the right thing and replace my microwave so my family and home can be safe. This is like a ticking time bomb sitting in your house and you never know when it will cause total destruction of everything you have worked for or; even more catastrophic, your loved ones lives.

We arrived home after being gone for 2 hours to find our microwave too hot to touch both inside and out. The display had the code SE or 5E. We are very lucky to have returned home, if it would have been longer it may have caught fire. Even the cabinet that houses the over the range microwave was hot. We unplugged it and immediately called Samsung.

Microwave oven begins cooking all by itself, without command.
When door is shut, a quiet buzz is heard. Microwave is cooking without any command.
You can’t even tell it is cooking unless you put something inside.
The light remains off. The turntable does not spin. The readout does not indicate it is cooking or counting down time.
Microwave keeps cooking until door is physically opened.
I made it stop by telling it to cook for a certain period of time.
At other times, when door is shut, sometimes fan and light run for no reason.

The product, in the report: SMH9187ST Samsung over the range Microwave
Samsung Over The Range Microwave SMH9187ST. Three years old. Error Message -SE- on keypad. Incessant beeping once error occurs. Will reset after removing plug and plugging back in. Error comes back within a few hours rendering microwave unusable. Once error message -SE- starts microwave can turn itself back on and cook without notice. My oven went on all by itself without my touching it and apparently was on for about four hours without my knowing it. Oven was hot to touch on exterior, interior was untouchable, as hot as a gas oven, interior shelving burned my hand. Very dangerous and very scary. At first Samsung says they don’t have any issues reported with this model and that it is out of warranty and a repairman will come at owner’s expense. I pushed for a different result and spoke to Executive Customer Relations, where the response changed. Samsung is indeed aware of problem (and so is the web), but will replace keypad only. This model should be pulled from the marketplace. Owners should be given a replacement or refund, not just a keypad replacement.

The product, in the report: Samsung Over the Range Microwave Stainless Steel and Black
Today I heated a cup a coffee for 30 seconds and while opening the door to get the cup I noticed that the door stuck, as if it were too big for the opening. Because this was odd, I touched the glass turntable and burned my finger. The glass NEVER gets hot, but it was today. I called my husband and we discovered that the inside and the entire outside of the oven was hot, hot enough to heat a measuring cup of water we placed inside without turning the oven on. We unplugged the unit and called 1800-SAMSUNG to report the malfunction. We were issued a ticket number and told that a 3rd party service person would call to set up an appointment at which time we would determine whether it is worth fixing or not. The unit was purchased a little over three years ago and is not under warranty but we felt this was important to report since it is a safety issue.
We had our previous over-the-range microwave for nearly 25 years and except for a burned out bulb that was too costly to repair, it worked great for all those years.

The product, in the report: Samsung over the range Microwave, Model SMH9187W
I own a 2 year old Samsung over the range microwave oven, model smh9187w. I heard an unfamiliar beeping coming from my kitchen. Upon investigation,I observed the led screen on the microwave displaying E/13. I’ve never seen this before. I went to the microwave and felt substantial heat as my hand and face neared the unit. I touched buttons on the control pad and none were responsive. I opened the door and it was like opening the gas oven. I then took the temperature of the glass turntable inside the microwave with a infrared laser temperature gun that I use in the kitchen for cooking. The glass was 385 degrees farenheit. I unplugged the microwave for about an hour and plugged it back in. It rebooted normally, but about 15 minutes later it started on its own again. The led screen displayed “baked potato”. I will not plug it in unattended and every time since, it continues to start on its own.
I believe this issue could be potentially very dangerous possibly resulting in serious personal injury and/ or substantial property damage

My microwave turns on “baked potato” mode randomly and runs when no one has pushed any buttons. It gets extremely hot. It also beeps a couple times as though something has just finished cooking (when nothing was cooking) and then a minute later, beeps a couple times again, and goes on for quite a while and then turns itself on again - in “baked potato” mode. I unplugged it and plugged it back in. It was fine for a while, but then started doing it again a couple days ago. I unplugged it and when I plugged it back in, it started doing it again about 20 minutes later.

The product, in the report: Microwave
I purchased the Over-the-Range Microwave from Lowes on August 8, 2010. It was installed by Lowes on August 19th, 2010. Microwave functioned properly until February 13th.
After taking out item being cooked and closing the door, microwave started to emit a buzzing sound and the display displayed “Set Clock”. After setting clock everything looked ok. I returned to the kitchen about 30 minutes later and the microwave was buzzing again. When I opened the microwave door the inside turntable was to hot to touch. The microwave had evidently turned itself on. Display said “Set Clock” again. I set it again and closed door. Buzzing started again and microwave started cooking. I the unplugged the microwave. I then called Samsung and advised them of the problem. They had me repeat what I had just done, same result. I was told to unplug it and they would have a service representative contact me. That was two weeks ago, still no contact.
I believe this is a safety concern and should be addressed promptly. Do not know what would have happened if I had not returned to kitchen when I did.

The product, in the report: Over-the-range microwave oven
Samsung over-the-range microwave Model SMH9187ST purchased 12/24/2010. Over the last year I had several instances each month when the oven emitted loud noises while food was heating - like a popping sound but no sparks, almost like someone was applying brakes to the turntable (a loud bumping and popping sound). The table was turning, so the roller ring and turntable were functioning properly and I did inspect them. Nor was it the sound food sometimes makes when it gets too hot, as the sound would start as soon as the oven was turned on and food would not heat properly. I had several visitors also express their concern about the sounds. In all instances food was being reheated in microwaveable plates covered with waxed paper in a clean oven. I woke up at 2:30 am this morning to the sound of the microwave beeping as if food was finished being cooked. The oven was empty, door closed and turntable was not turning, but the light was on and the oven kept beeping. I tried pressing the stop/clear pad but the beeping did not stop. When I pressed the start pad, the display panel listed letters and numbers that I had never seen before. I kept trying the stop button but the beeping would not stop and the light remained lit. Not knowing if there were microwaves present even though the turntable was not turning, I did not open the door. The beeping continued until I was able to get a ladder and unplugged the microwave from the outlet above the cabinet. I had NOT used the microwave at all the previous day. It started by itself. While there was no fire or injuries, I consider myself lucky and will NOT use this oven again.

A week later the exhaust fan would turn off and on, like it was trying to start, then it would stop. This would happen 4-5 times per day, possibly more. Within another week, the exhaust fan and the hood light would start to cycle on and off, without anyone being near the microwave. We disconnected the power, thinking that it had a short and were concerned about a fire.

The product, in the report: Samsung Over-the-Range Microwave Oven SMH9207ST/XAA
Product is a Samsung Over-the-Range Microwave Oven, model # SMH9207ST/XAA, Serial Number J4MY7WO300207K.
The microwave has a cooktop light on the bottom of the oven. The glass cover on the cooktop light gets extremely hot.
My hand came in contact with the cover of the cooktop light while reaching for a pot on the rear burner of my stovetop. The brief contact burned my right hand between the thumb and wrist.. The burned area was approx 1.5in x 1in, and took approx 2 weeks to heal. I applied first-aid at home, and did not seek medical attention. The burned skin turned deep red, and was painful for a week, but did not form any blisters
The cooktop light uses two standard 40-watt appliance bulbs, which came with the appliance. The cavity which holds the lamps is very shallow, which means the glass cover is almost in direct contact with the bulbs, causing it to reach an unsafe temperature when the light is in normal use. Because the cooktop light is on the bottom of the microwave, the consumer cannot readily see its location. When reaching to the rear of the stovetop, is is therefore very easy for an unprotected hand/arm to come into contact with the very hot light cover.

The product, in the report: Samsung Microwave, over-the range. Purchased from Lowe’s on 7/25/2010. SMH9187ST (273727)
I was in the kitchen, and the over-the-range microwave oven turned on, uncommanded. The microwave ran for about 10 seconds before I could reach it. I tried to turn the microwave off by pressing buttons on the control panel, and the microwave was unresponsive. The microwave continued to cook. I finally needed to open the door for the microwave to stop, and then the words displayed on the microwave display. The display read “SE.” I have unplugged the microwave from the wall and not used it since that date.
Had I not been home at the time, the microwave would have continued to cook, and potentially caused a fire.

The product, in the report: Samsung 1000W 1.6 Cu. Ft. OTR Microwave, Stainless Steel
My wife went outside last Friday and when she came back into the house, our Samsung over-the-stove microwave oven had turned itself on. I thought she must be mistaken until I saw it happen this evening when we were both in the kitchen. Fortunately for us, we were home both times this happened and in both cases there wasn’t anything in the microwave. Otherwise, it’s possible our house could have burned down.
I have read of this problem at other websites, yet Samsung refuses to admit there is an issue with this product. I have three children in the house under the age of 10 and we are afraid to keep this product plugged it. Consumers should be warned about the danger of this unsafe product.

The Samsung microwave had an “SE” error warning. We cleared the error and then proceeded to cook some food. The food was removed. About two minutes later the microwave started itself cooking on the “baked potato” mode.
On the internet, we have seen this isn’t unique. One person indicated it started a fire in his kitchen, causing extensive damage. We have since unplugged it and am afraid that it could start up at any time.

I went outside after dinner and when I came in approximately 2 hours later, my microwave was running with nothing in it. I turned it off and opened it up to let it cool off----it was extremely HOT! It seems at though it came on by itself. Also seems as thought it should have some sort of safety feature to prevent it from overheating because this could have easily started a fire. It will no longer work and shows a 5E error code.

The product, in the report: Samsung Over the Range Microwave
I placed a potato in the microwave and pressed the Potato Cook button for sensor based cooking. The microwave began cooking normally and I proceeded with further dinner preparations. Within 5-7 minutes, the microwave started billowing out smoke and I could see flames, arcing and sparks inside the microwave. I couldn’t reach the plug for the microwave so quickly opened the door to stop the cooking process and jumped back. The inside of the microwave was all black and the glass was burnt and the plastic tuner mechanism was melted. The smoke was acrid and took days to get out of the house.

The product, in the report: Over the range microwave oven with vent and lighting system
(3/14/2012) The consumer said that the microwave oven shocked her on 1 occasion. The microwave was in the “off” position at the time. The consumer was opening the microwave oven door, when the incident occurred. There was no injury.
The next day, the consumer walked into the kitchen and saw that the light underneath the microwave oven was on. She turned it off. A couple minutes later, the consumer saw that the light had come back on by itself. She turned it off again, but later found that it came back on. She noted that it kept turning on by itself more frequently as time passed. Finally, the consumer unplugged the microwave oven from the wall outlet.
(3/16/12) The consumer called the mfr. and explained the problem to a rep. The rep. advised the consumer to unplug the microwave oven from the wall outlet and leave it unplugged. The rep. started to arrange for a service technician to come out, but he checked their system and saw that the consumer’s warranty had expired 11 days earlier. Therefore, the rep. did not arrange for a tech. to come out.
The consumer did some checking around on her own and a local repair person told her that it would cost $200 - $250 the microwave oven. The local technician told the consumer that he had repair 2 of 3 of these microwaves with a similar problem in the past month. The tech. said that the panel on the front had a short in it and he might have to replace some wires or the entire panel.
The consumer opted to purchase a new microwave oven by a different mfr.

The product, in the report: microwave oven
Put raw potato in Microwave oven and pushed Potato sensor cook button. Left the room for about 5 minutes or so. When I returned to the kitchen, the oven was still running and flames were shooting up from the potato inside the oven. I turned the oven off, pulled the plug and waited for the flames to die down before opening the oven. There was a lot of smoke. I called manufacturer and reported the fire. A technician came to the house, replaced a part and reinstalled the microwave oven. Technician told me not to cook using the sensor cook in future. Technician did not offer any help or advice for smoke in the house.
I opened windows & ran fans for several weeks. Smoke fumes eventually dissipated.

I have a Samsung over the range microwave oven which is starting spontaneously on its own (empty) and runs continuously until I press the stop button. Fortunately, I have been aware of its running and have been able to manually stop it. I have observed that when it self starts it has been in the “Popcorn” mode according to the display. I am concerned that it is a fire hazard. I am indicating the “Incident Date” below as yesterday because it happened several times yesterday, but it has actually been happening regularly for several weeks.
