The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Nov 19, 2011, sent to the company Nov 28, 2011, published by CPSC Dec 12, 2011

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid Microwave Hood Oven Combination Model # KHMS155L.

Kitchenaid Microwave Hood Combination Model KHMS155L beeps in an erratic pattern and then turns on by itself. The display alternates between a 3 minute countdown and the word “PAN”. Only unplugging or opening the door makes it stop.

This is a potential fire hazard and there should be a recall on this item. I had a similar problem with my Kitchenaid stove earlier this year and had to pay to have it fixed.

The product, in the report: Over the Range Microwave

The consumer says she heard a noise of something falling. She said the hood fell over on top of the range and shattered the range glass top. She says the glass and the hood barely missed her daughter who was sitting near the appliance. She noticed the plastic inside the hood was melted. She says thinks that the plastic disintegrated and fell. She says the microwave was not on at the time of the incident. The consumer contacted the manufacturer who told her it is not under extended warranty. They offered to send a technician for a fee. The stove is not working now.

The consumer says his wife was cooking bacon. He says the paper plate went into flames. He said the bacon was almost done but was not burned. The consumer contacted the manufacturer who sent out a technician. The technician stated that the magnatron overheated. A few weeks later the manufacturer determined the microwave was working just fine. The consumer has seen many reports online about the same issue happening. The consumer will not plug in this unit again.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid Microwave Hood Combination

My Kitchenaid Microwave Hood combination started sparking 2 years after purchase. I had two repair companies look at it, and it is non-operable. Kitchenaid said that due to arcing and melted tuning rods, it is a fire hazard. It is not covered by any warrantly, just 2 years after purchase, and retail value is $1050.

The product, in the report: Above counter microwave with hood.

I came in the house to find that the microwave was running by itself. I attempted to turn it off by using the key pad, but it wouldn’t shut off. I had to open the door to stop it. The LED display was showing “PAD”. I unplugged the microwave, and plugged it back in. Within seconds, it started running again. The interior of the microwave was extremely hot. So hot that I couldn’t touch the glass rotisserie. I did a quick search on the internet to find that this is a common problem with this particular model. Whirlpool replaced the control board at no cost to me, but could not insure that the replacement board was any different than what was originally in the microwave. Hence, the issue may occur again at any time. KitchenAid model KHMS155LSS-3. Manufacture date Oct 05.

The product, in the report: Microwave/Vent Hood combination. Placed over cook top area. Mounted in cabinetry.

The Vent Grille at the top of the microwave fell off of the unit in the middle of the night. About 3am I heard a loud noise from the kitchen, and discovered that the Vent Grille had just fallen right off of the unit leaving two chips out of the hardwood floor. When I looked more closely in the morning, the two tabs that secure the Vent Grille to the main body of the microwave had just broken off leaving the tab part still behind under the screw that was intended to secure the Vent Grille. I thought, “good thing nobody was standing there cooking when this broke free.” Upon searching for a replacement part I discovered lots of other customers who had experienced this same failure. The part itself doesn’t seem to be a critical safety piece, but if someone were standing, or worse yet cooking when this happens, I could imagine that the injuries could get fairly serious. If this were to fall on a pan handle or something on a cook top below, a person could be seriously burned.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid microwave oven/range hood

KitchenAid Microwave/Range Hood (model KHMS155LSS-4), manufactured in April 2006 in PRC, suddenly and by itself started operating. I happened to come home and noticed the microwave was on. I suspect it had been on for some time because the machine was hot and there was a noticeable burnt smell in the kitchen. When I hit the stop button, it would immediately come back on. If I opened the door of the microwave, it would stop, but when I closed the door it would turn back on. Only unplugging the microwave stopped it. The read out on the display kept saying “PAN”. This is a serious fire hazard, and according to internet reports is common with the model. The company knows about this defect because they agreed, at no cost, to send me a new part and pay for the repair. I’m not sure this is good enough if there has been no recall/fix of ALL of these machines.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid under-counter Microwave Oven (Model KHMS155LSS-3 Oct 2005)

I just came in the house after spending about an hour and a half mowing the lawn. To my surprise, the KitchenAid Microwave (Model KHMS155LSS-3 Oct 2005) was running by itself. I tried to turn it off using the buttons, but none of them worked. I ended up opening the door and unplugging the unit to get it to stop running.

The inside of the microwave was absolutely smoking hot! Before unplugging it, the digital display was indicating “PAN”. I plugged the microwave back into the outlet, and “PAN” again appeared. Seconds later the microwave started to run by itself again, so I unplugged it.

I called Whirlpool (800/331-7456), and they said it was most likely a control board problem, and that they would be mailing a new one to my house. They also scheduled a service call, which is a week and a half from today.

This unit should have been recalled! A quick web search reveals that this has been a problem with countless others.

Thank God I was at home or we might not have a home (and pets) to come back to.

The product, in the report: KithenAid 2.0 Cu Ft Over the Range Microwave Oven

I have a built in Microwave oven over the range . It is about 6 months old. I have heard an arching sound coming from the oven but the oven stills works. the other day my wife had heated some water and as she was getting it out of the microwave she burn her arm on the side of the inside of the microwave metal cabinet. I was a contractor for over 30 years and I know a microwave oven interior does not get hot, only the food or what you are heating. I called for service on the microwave and A&E factory service came out. They put a heat sensor on the spot that burnt my wifes arm and said it had reached 170 degrees. They said that was not normal and had never seen anything like that before. They had to call Whirlpool which is the maker of KitchenAid and their Lead Tech said that was normal and they would do nothing about it. If it was normal they should be some type of warning that the metal inside of the microwave gets hot enough to take the skin off of you, but there is not

The product, in the report: Microwave oven/hood combination

KitchenAid Microwave oven Model number KHMS155lSS-3 has begun running on its own with no input from any operator. Contacted KitchenAid/Whirlpool today to see if there was a recall, as I saw many complaints of the same issue online last night. They stated that they know what is wrong with my microwave, even went as far to say they could provide the service people with the correct part to order before they came to my house. I stated that a microwave starting on its own and running would seem like a fire hazard, they did not seem concerned. They said it was not on any recall. I found this puzzling, as they know exactly what my problem was and even knew that it would run on its own at any time. I have seen reports of people coming home and having their microwave oven running. It seems like a recall-type hazard to me, but that is only my opinion.

Whirlpool shipped the part to my house (10 days) and paid for the replacement with no hassle, no cost. I had to unplug the microwave while waiting for the part to arrive.

This is my second Kitchenaid appliance with a major safety defect. My stove (KGRA806PSS02) “off” button failed. Whirlpool gave hassle about covering replacement installation costs, but ultimately replaced next day free.

I will not buy Kitchenaid appliances. Not worth the risk, and they don’t recall failing/dangerous products.

The keyboard was flashing “Inch” with various numbers.. It could have burned my house down... There is no recall, I wouldnt have known there was a problem until this happened to us and then i searched online and have read 100’s of complaints with similar issues. I will call Whirlpool tomorrow but I just hope a goverment agency such as this, can launch an investigation and prevent a tragedy, Thanks,

The product, in the report: Microwave stainless steel KHMS155LSS-4

I have a range hood Kitchenaid microwave KHMS155LSS-4 that I purchased about 5 years ago. About 6 months ago, my microwave started up itself during the night giving off a beeping sound. I could not stop it except to unplug it. I did not have it occur again until more recently. Thank goodness, I was at home. It will now start up by itself more often, so I unplug it when I am not using it. I did some research on the internet and see that this is a frequent problem. See http://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/kitchenaid_microwave_rangehood.html

I called Kitchenaid and they are to send a part and have it replaced in a couple of weeks. I am fearful that this won’t work and it will happen again when I am not at home. Kitchenaid needs to recall this product. It is extremely dangerous! Whoever imagined that a microwave can start up by itself! Some of the on-line reports indicate that the repair does not cure the problem.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid convection microwave oven model : kbmc140hss0

my KitchenAid Convection Microwave Oven keep beeping, then has mind of its own, getting all different number entered by itself to the oven. It may start running with unlimited time without stopping....it is unsafe and dangerous.....it may cause the house to burn down....

I have it fixed by KitchenAid service and it happened again right after it was fixed...i think there is design fraud on the keypad design...

I called KitchenAid and they claimed that is the isolated problem but i found out that many consumers have similar problem with the products...

Like to know what is the latest update on this product. Thanks.

The product, in the report: Microwvae Oven with Hood Model # KHMS 155LSS-4 Serial # TRT 02 11042 Manufature Date January 2006 (Stainless Steel)

I have a KitchAid Microwave with hood combo microwave oven Model # KHMS155LSS-4 Serial # TRT 02 11042. Five days ago, the microwave started beeping, the lights started flashing, and the microwave oven turned on all by itself. It appears that the microwave oven went into auto cook mode. I got up immediately and pushed the cancel button to stop the cooking. About 20 minutes later, the microwave oven did the exact same thing. Three days ago my wife awoke at 430 am to a smell of smoke. The microwave oven had turned on by itself again and started a piece of left over bread on fire. The microwave had the word “turn” displayed when my wife cancelled the cooking. I sent in a product complaint on this a few hours later to KitchenAid. It has been three days with no response. I have since unplugged the microwave oven. The inside of the oven is now yellow and we are affraid to plug the microwave oven back in, in fear of the house catching on fire. I am filing this complaint due to KitchenAid’s lack of response to my complaint on their website. I have read that there is a recall of Whirlpool Microwave ovens with hoods, but my serial number does not start with the proper letters to fullfill the recall. Please help before other microwaves cause fires. Thanks [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Microwave Over the Range Stainless Steel

Our Kitchenaide Over the range microwave (Model# KHMS155LSS-4) turned on by itself !!! I returned from work today to find our microwave running by itself with nothing in it.....A MAJOR FIRE HAZARD!!!! The keypad was unresponsive and the only way to stop it was to open the door and unplug it from the power source. I quickly went online to discover that hundreds, if not thousands of others have reported this same problem. I then checked if there were any recalls issued for this product, and there were not any that I could find.

*** Then I talked to Whirlpool (the parent company of Kitchenaide), and they were very responsive, admitted to being aware of the problem, and agreed to parts and labor at no charge. In fact, the repair is scheduled for only 4 days from now and the part is being FedEx’ed directly to me.

*****Most important, they indicated that it is NOT a fire hazard, since there is a built-in auto-shutoff feature that will trigger if the unit becomes too hot. I would not personally want to test this capability in my home, but it offers some degree of re-assurance.
