No one hurt Made Dec 3, 2025, sent to the company Dec 8, 2025, published by CPSC Dec 22, 2025
The product, in the report: It is a Kitchenaid 30” microwave/combo wall unit in white - 30 Inch Double Combination Smart Electric Wall Oven with 6.4 cu. ft. Total Capacity, Even-Heat True Convection, Temperature Probe, Backlit Knobs, Assisted Cooking Modes, Fresh Pizza Mode, Touch-Activated Controls, LCD Display, Sabbath Mode and STAR-K Certified:
During normal use, my built-in KitchenAid microwave/oven combination (installed new in 2019) caught fire inside the microwave cavity. The fire originated in the waveguide/magnetron area a sealed internal component that consumers cannot access. Flames were visible, and the interior wall of the microwave burned and melted before we were able to contain the fire.
Details: Whirlpool sent a certified technician who inspected the unit. His written report states: The magnetron is grounded to the frame, the unit is sparking when in use, Whirlpool technical support deemed the appliance unrepairable.
The case was reviewed with Whirlpools safety team
Because the fire occurred inside a sealed internal component and the magnetron shorted to the chassis, this was an internal mechanical failure, not improper use or installation.
The microwave is integrated into the oven chassis, so the entire appliance is compromised and cannot be repaired.
We were fortunate to catch the fire quickly. My husband is a firefighter and happened to be home at the time. We have three young children, and this incident could have been far more serious.
Whirlpool has declined to provide written documentation of their position. They are offering only partial cost coverage toward replacement, which still requires me to pay thousands of dollars for an appliance that failed due to a documented internal safety defect.
I am filing this report so the internal fire hazard can be properly documented.

The product, in the report: Flush Built in Design 1.1 - cu ft 1000 - Watt over the range microwave
Purchased this under cabinet Kitchen Aid microwave with new heating technology (no turntable) 03/09/2025. In the less than two weeks since Ive owned this unit, it has done the following: occasionally not heated a cup of water much or at at all, when the time the water was heated for the water should have been very hot, consistently overcooked food to the point of overcooking or burning the exterior circumference of things like a small plate of Mac and cheese, while the center is cool to just warm - this happens with pretty much any food item heated in this unit. Yesterday it started to burn the bottom of a half full paper [REDACTED] cup of coffee that I was re-heating for around 30 seconds, and today I suffered a third degree burn when I put a microwave safe ceramic coffee cup of water in to heat (a cup Ive used before to heat water in my previous under cabinet turntable microwave), and when I grabbed the handle to remove it I received a third degree burn, on my finger, and the water inside the cup was only lukewarm warm.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid microwave/oven combo. Model No. KOCE500ESS11, Serial No. DX4005793. We have only had it for 2 years 8 months.
The microwave shot out flames on the inside. The warranty company sent out a service tech 5x. The first 2 times the microwave shot out flames for the service tech after he replaced the parts. The 3rd time it shorted out for the tech. The 4th time the service tech said it was fixed, but it shot out flames after he left when I was using it. The 5th time the tech/Whirlpool deemed it unrepairable. During this time Kitchenaid consumer affairs called us and said to keep the power off and they want to remove it from our home. They want to charge us $1,300 to replace the unit. My current unit is no longer available. I chose a cheaper unit than what I had, but they still want me to pay $1,300.

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid KMCH319ESS-4 stainless steel convection /microwave oven over the range mounted
My microwaves glass door shattered on its own while my husband and I were sleeping and it was not in use. Left slivers of glass all over the place, did not hear or notice until I walked in kitchen to get coffee in the am and these were slivers of glass everywhere fortunately I did not get them in my barefeet. This is a known issue and we are not getting any support or help from the manufacture. I have tried since April 18, 2023 to get assistance, I have been lied to, ignored and this is a known [REDACTED] defect there is even a [REDACTED] video of another consumer with the same defect of the [REDACTED] glass. I have tried to get MFG to honor 2-5 year touch sensor warranty and fix the product but have not been helped at all. They need to recall this glass and make their consumers whole this is a $1,100 microwave convection oven, not a throw away item.

The product, in the report: 30” Built in kitchen aid microwave/oven, stainless steel, KOCE500ESS08 is the model number
3 year old Kitchen Aid built in microwave/oven wall combo. Model KOCE500ESS08. Interior is blue glass/enamel and while hand-cleaning the bottom of this barely used oven, there were blue glass shards on my sponge! There have been earlier complaints that this same oven’s self-cleaning feature has been having shattered/exploding glass, etc. while in use so I am extremely concerned and do not want to use that feature because of these reports. This is NOT a cosmetic issue - this is a safety issue since glass in food is not acceptable.

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid above the stove microwave Model KMHC319ESS-3
Kitchen Aid microwave, above the range style. Started having problems with the on/off switch prior to March 2022. Since we had an extended warranty we called Asurion and requested a repair. While waiting for the date of repair, the inside panel of the door began to separate from the door, exposing the interior of the microwave door. We were unable to use the product due to safety issues as well as the on/off switch not working properly. After 3 weeks they called and gave us an appointment. When the repairman called to see what the problem was, prior to his visit, we sent him a pic of the door separating as well as described the switch issue. He advised that he was very familiar with the door issue and that it was a common problem and had one in stock. He mention that since the controls were located in the actual door the problem stems from a poorly engineered product. He then made the visit and replaced the door after a very lengthy call with his company, who accused us of abusing the door causing it to come apart. He advised them no, there was no abused and he has fixed this problem many times. The door repair was approved and he replaced the door. A week or so later we started to get the error when trying to start the microwave. It would repeatedly tell us to open/close the door and would not start. We made another call for repair since the door fix apparently didnt fix that problem. A couple weeks later a repair guy showed up and was to fix our oven. They had given him the wrong info. So he left and set another appointment for July 5 to come fix the Mwave. The week before the appointment they cancelled the appointment. I had to again call and schedule another appointment. This time it was July 21. He came back and replace some parts. Plugged it in and now it will not turn off. Also, the latches are not even in straight so the door doesnt close properly. Asurion now has scheduled 8/8 for another part to be replaced and they will be sending out 2 repairman since they have to remove the microwave from the wall. I do not have confidence that it will work since the door latches still are not right. I am very worried about the safety of this product. I have contacted Kitchen Aid and they refuse to do anything since it is up to the warranty company. I still have a microwave that doesnt work and has to be unplugged so it doesnt burn down my home.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid built in Convection Microwave Oven. Stainless steel trim, built in to kitchen cabinet.
[REDACTED] started Microwave to heat oatmeal. The Microwave unit buzzed and electrical wire insulation burned causing a great deal of ugly smell within the house, then the unit stopped working. The digital clock still displayed the time.
Report update 2/15/22:
Whirlpool had their authorized service provider come to our house today. The appliance technician was not able to duplicate or recreate the problem of burning insulation within the Microwave. The appliance technician removed the entire Microwave-Oven unit from the built in cabinet and inspected my estimate of 90% of the wiring visible after removing cover plates on the top, side and back of the combined unit. The inspection of wires and connections gave no evidence of burning wires. The unit was then re-installed and returned to operation. We plan to continue using the unit and Whirlpool has started a case-file to refer back to should the problem occur again.

Adding to my report- the fact that the microwave went on by itself and would not turn off caused a paper towel in the unit to start burning and the exterior of the unit to become very hot. If I was not home, this could have caused a fire that could have damaged my home and cause injury

The product, in the report: 30” 1000-Watt Microwave Hood Combination with Convection Cooking
In January my Wife and I purchased a brand new Over-the-hood Microwave from Spencers TV and Appliances. This was to replace a 26yr old [REDACTED] that was not matching the current appliance scheme. The [REDACTED] never, ever had any problems and worked until the day that I deinstalled it. The new Kitchen Aid unit has all the newest features including a step by step cooking system. My daughters have been in remote learning and I wanted a unit that would have step by step auto cooking features for them at lunch breaks. On Tuesday March 30th my daughter put water and rice into a microwave bowl following the step by step instructions. The unit has an automated sensor system that stops cooking when it is done. Both my daughters had cooked rice in this many times with no issues. In this instance the Microwave did not stop cooking, my Wife working from home smelled smoke and went in to the kitchen to find out what happened. My daughter [REDACTED] said it did not stop cooking and burned down the rice into a crisp and even melted the plastic inside the microwave. This type of melted plastic has fully contaminated the unit and can not be removed without taking the unit fully apart. The unit is still under the 1 year warranty so I contacted Kitchen Aid (Whirlpool) about the incident. The technician from Guinco just left. He made a full report to the Whirlpool safety department. When I called them they said there was nothing further they could do since I would not accept anything but a replacement. They said there only responsibility is to repair it. It doesn’t matter that everything being cooked in this unit going forward will contaminate all the food cooked in it. They are not responsible for the safety issue that their unit failed to stop cooking even after it had melted the plastic turntable gear. They are only responsible for repair of a unit that not only poses a huge fire risk but because it did not function in a safe way is forever contaminated with the chemical residue of the turntable gear plastic. My wife was baking two potatoes in unit using sense mode. When the clock showed 2:00 she opened the door to check the to see if they were done.
I just happened to be standing next to her and noticed that the unit WAS STILL RUNNING. I was able to quickly pull her hand from the machine and close the door. The unit WAS STILL RUNNING even after the interruption! I quickly hit the off button and it stopped.
Fortunately the unit must have been the between power cycles since it did not burn her, but it could since she did not notice that it WAS STILL RUNNING!
After that, if the unit was off and I opened the door the internal light would not turn on right away, then it would click and the light would turn on. This would happen about 50% of the time. My wife then mentioned that it would not start the previous day and the display told her to close the door even though it was closed.

The product, in the report: Microwave
This caller is reporting her microwave that she purchased around June 2004 at a now closed retailer of appliances in Michigan. The consumer had no problems with this microwave until Friday, March 3rd, 2017 she was in the kitchen washing food for cooking when she heard her microwave running. She called to her husband who came into the kitchen and advised the caller to unplug the unit. She unplugged the microwave and has left it unplugged. She is reporting this as a fire and burn hazard. There are no injuries being reported The consumer contacted the manufacturer who said they would pay for the repair but not for the part because there is no recall. She states that Consumer Reports reported in 2013 that these units were unsafe and could catch fire but when she contacted the manufacturer at that time she was advised that the report did not involve her model.

The product, in the report: microwave oven 2.2cu ft.
KitchenAid microwave oven model KCMS2255. Manufactured in Oct 2014. Microwave was self-starting periodically over a couple of weeks. It almost always followed the door being shut from previous use. The unit either ran for about 20 sec and shut off. Or the most recent time - the unit began counting down a “cook time” starting with the clock time shown on display. It was 8:59am, and when the unit self started - it began cooking with a time of 8min 59sec and was counting down. Key pad is not functional during these self-starts. The only way to stop the unit is to open the door - and that was problematic as well. We have since unplugged and removed the microwave. Big safety concern. This is a new construction home and we have used the microwave for only a year.
Called KitchenAid, and they diverted me to their safety office which has not called me back yet.

We own a Kitchenaid Microwave Model KHMSlSSLSS Serial number TRS5270267. When arriving home from work, observed the microwave was running ..... the unit started itself, and nothing was in the microwave. Unplugged the unit, and then plugged it in again; the microwave self-started again after several minutes, requiring it to be unplugged to stop creating a safety/fire hazard. After researching on the internet, viewed several articles stating the same issue with this specific model. Kitchenaid initially would not acknowledge the issue, but then agreed to fix the units at no charge even outside warranty period articles stated. I called the 800 number in the article and was told my microwave serial number was not included in the free repair, even though it’s the same issue and same model number called out in the article.

The product, in the report: Microwave
The consumer indicates that she was in her living when she heard a noise coming from her kitchen. When she went to check, she noticed her microwave had started on its own. The consumer indicates that it took her approximately one minute for the unit to understand the CANCEL command as every time she pressed said button an F2 prompt would be displayed. Approximately eight hours later, the unit turned itself on again. This time it would not shut off at all when the consumer pressed the CANCEL button so she had to unplug the unit.
The consumer states that she seldom uses her microwave, approximately once every three months, as she possesses another unit that she uses mostly.
The consumer does not know if she will have the microwave in the next thirty days since she plans on replacing it but is unsure when.

I own a KitchenAid Microwave, Model No. KCMS145JSS-1, Serial FGR3215278, Manufactured August 2004.
Last night the microwave was off and had not been used in hours. I was about to go to sleep when i smelled a strong electrical smell. i touched the top of the microwave at 1:30am in my home and it was blazing hot. The whole top of the microwave was hot and the heat was starting to burn the wooden cabinet above it in my kitchen. There is a logical amount of space and venting between the microwave and the cabinetry. It was crazy. This could have caused a fire destroying my home and harming me and my family.
I unplugged the microwave and will get rid of it. i took photos. the only light that comes on are two small lights, like dots, not the clock or other indicators that usually appear. Again, the microwave was not being used...it just got hot on the outside of the appliance on its own. Please warn other consumers, this is really unsafe.

Kitchenaid Microwave oven model KCMS145JSS - S/N FGRO402408 turned back on after I took my food out and shut the door. I didn’t notice it for a few minutes when I smelled smoke. I tried to hit the “Stop” and Cancel keys and about anything else I thought might work, but nothing worked. Worried it would cause a wall fire I unplugged it and put it outside in the trash. It has worked great for about 15 years, but to think it could have caused a house fire is most worrisome. I used to work for KitchenAid/Whirlpool and hopefully they are on top of this problem.

I bought this KitchenAid counter top microwave less than 4 years ago. After a little bit over one year, one of the micro switch is burned. I replaced a new one to it. On second year, two more micro switches were burned again.
And then last week, it doesn’t heat food any more, I opened box and found one wire (black color) which connects the transformer to the micro switch is burned and broken. I can sent you picture for this.
Even though I reconnected the wire and the microwave works again, I believe there is some short circuit inside somewhere which causes the burning over and over again.
And more important is that this product has a big potential fire hazard and potential human body damage. I strongly ask this product to be recalled and replace it with a new one.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid over the range microwave oven
On 4/26/2015, we were microwaving a potato on automatic/sensing mode. We had just cooked three potatoes prior to this one which all came out OK. This time however it cooked for several minutes (I noticed it was taking a while) and then went POP and burst into flames inside the microwave. The fire was sustained and we quickly grabbed a fire extinguisher, opened the microwave door and and discharged it into the microwave. The microwave was ruined with fire damage. The potato was completely burned ash/charcoal 100% of the way though - it was like it had turned the potato into pure ash. There were no injuries to people other than minor smoke inhalation.

The product, in the report: Microwave
Kitchenaid microwave caught fire, no visible flames but extensive gray/black smoke with electrical burning odor.
The overheating fire burned the inside of the door, bottom portion where the door shuts. The incident began with a very loud pop then the beeping of the microwave. The smoke detectors never activated.
Callers were awakened February 6th, 2015 around 5:50AM by the noise, contacted 911 and when the fire responders arrived they said that the microwave was still turned on after the door to the unit was opened.
The fire responders turned the breaker off then disconnected the over the range unit and took it outside.
The microwave had not been in use since the day before the incident.
There are no injuries to be reported
The caller is creating this report due to the potential for fire, residential and physical damage and harm had he not awakened.
The caller has not contacted the manufacturer but does intend to contact them.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid microwave that sits over the stove, model # KHMS2056SWH-0, white, manufactured March 2008
Our KitchenAid microwave that sits above the stove has pressed the Defrost button & selected Manual Defrost at least 4 times this evening, without anyone being near the microwave. I did some quick research on-line, and it appears from ConsumerReports.org that microwaves can turn on by themselves, especially KitchenAid and [REDACTED] brands. This can lead to house fires, which I was afraid of when I started wondering what was causing the buttons to self-start. I wondered if it was an electrical malfunction and am concerned about a short and potential fire risk. As mentioned in the Consumer Reports article, I already opened the door in hopes that the microwave will not be able to turn on by itself when no one is present. I will try calling KitchenAid tomorrow to see whether they’ve had other reports of this happening to the particular model we have and see if they have a specific suggestion as to what part might need fixing or whether to just have a repair person come out.

The product, in the report: Microwave/Oven Combination Unit
The consumer stated that the oven had an unfinished edge that could pose as laceration hazard. The consumer stated that when the technician came to install the unit on 10/16/14, he received a cut on his leg.
The consumer contacted the retailer. They informed the consumer to add tube adhesive to the bottom edge to eliminate the hazard. The consumer did not think that was a good idea for a new product.
The consumer called the manf and filed a complaint. They sent out a technician from Appliance Doctor Inc. The technician came out on 10/22/14. The technician noted that the KitchenAid Microwave/Oven Combo has sharp edges at door perimeter and along bottom edge of trim sharp enough to cut the skin. The consumer has not heard anything from the manf after the technician came for inspection.
The consumer contacted the retailer again. The consumer returned the unit to the retailer and purchased a new unit by a different company. The consumer was charged 15% restocking fee.
The consumer stated that he saw a different model at a different retailer for a Whirlpool unit and that unit had the same unfinished edge as well. The employee informed the consumer that the oven would not usually be installed as high as it was in the display. The consumer stated that his unit was installed as high as the display. The consumer feels that regardless of how the oven is installed, it should not have a a sharp, unfinished edge.

The Kitchenaide microwave turned itself on while we were sitting at the table eating dinner. It was empty and set itself to be on for 60 minutes. We could not stop it with the keypad and had to open the door to stop it. Then we unplugged it. The keypad has been beeping and changing the display a lot but this is the first time it has turned itself on. Quite the fire hazard if it would have happened when the house was empty. After checking online I was surprised to find that this has happened with other microwaves and wonder why the public has not been made aware this issue for their own safety.

We bought KITCHEN AID mircrowavehood combination Model # KHMC1857BSS SR# TR33216844 ON9/24/2013 from LOWE’S stores Location ID# 1743 under Invoice # [REDACTED]. We also bought Kitchen AID GAS COOK TOP Model# KFGS306VSS03 SR# D30901049 from the same store under the same invoice particulars.
KA OTR MICRO KHMC1857BSS: Microwavehood combination equipment door handle and front control panel gets extreme hot after usage of 30 to 35 min with convection or microwave function that door cannot be opened with bare hands. Microwave feature of the equipment cannot be used immediately after completion of baking or roasting. If someone tries to use microwave inadvertently immediately after the completion of bake or roast cycle that overheat results into injury. Microwave fan creates noise level from 110 to 90 dB up to 20 to 30 minutes immediately after the completion of any automated baking cycle. As per the manual and specs provided by the manufacturer one can use Aluminum foil to bake the food. However it starts sparking while using the aluminum foil. It is very scary to use the equipment as oven. It comes with the baking rack as a part of original equipment but cannot use in the baking cycle.
KA KFGS306VSS03: Gas cook top control Knobs gets so hot after 30 to 60 minutes of cooking that knobs cannot be shut off with bare hands.
One of our family members got burn injury on RTE hand while operating Microwave hood combination equipment.
We have senior citizen (Age80+) and a child (Age9 Months+) and other members of family with age group of 20 to 55 years. Our major concern is with the injury due to excessive heating and Nosie level which may impair hearing over a period of time.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid® 30’’, 1200-Watt Microwave Hood Combination Oven, Architect® Series II
Purchased KitchenAid, convection, vented hood microwave near beginning of 2013. We were in the process of using the timer which had about 15 minutes left on a 1 hour setting. We were not touching the microwave when the fans began to blow fiercely. Opening the door had no impact on the unit and it was getting dangerously hot and quickly. We killed the power supply by disengaging the breaker within a minute of when the unit started itself.
Once the unit cooled, we were able to unplug the cord from the wall socket and inspect the unit. The convection oven must have been running un-commanded. The glass turntable has black markings in it and the plastic at the base is now warped. I believe the space inside the microwave is damaged as well, but this is just speculation at this point.
I am confident that if we had not been at home and readily in the area to stop the power feed to the unit then there would have been a fire or an explosion from the microwave starting on its own.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid Microwave KHMS155LSS-3
I have a Kitchenaid Builtin Microwave oven, Brand KHMS155lss-3 that today started coming on by itself. There was a burning smell associated with this. Hitting cancel would not turn the oven off. After opening the door and clearing the oven I went back upstairs. Within 10 minutes the oven came on again. This happened one more time and I turned off the breaker switch to the oven. Afterwards I went online and googled ovens coming on alone and noticed that this same microwave oven has been having this issue for at least a couple of years and has been responsible for kitchen fires. This is a holiday weekend and I am very happy that I stayed in town because no telling what could have happened if I was away. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND ANYONE WHO HAS THIS MICROWAVE OVEN SHOULD BE NOTIFIED THAT IT IS DEFECTIVE. Since this is a holiday weekend I am waiting until Monday to try and reach someone at Kitchenaid/Whirlpool but it seems the company is aware of this problem and doing nothing so it seems like this is should be addressed by the consumer protection agency.
FYI, I live in a condo and most of the units were fitted with this microwave when they were built in 2006.

The product, in the report: Over the range 36” stainless steel microwave oven.
Microwave oven self started. Family members smelled something burning in kitchen. Upon investigating, found smell to be coming from our over the range 36” microwave oven which was not being used at the time of this incident. Upon opening the oven’s door, observed a portion (about the size of a half dollar) of the glass turntable glowing hot orange and the plastic caddy the glass turntable sits on was burning. The heat was so intense that it smoothed the rough finish of the glass that was hot. Again, the microwave was not being used at the time but the heating element powered on. The turntable was not rotating therefore all the heat was concentrated in one spot. The smell that alerted us was the plastic caddy that had burned and begun to melt. We reacted by turning the oven’s power off at the circuit breaker and then later unplugged the unit itself.

The product, in the report: over the counter Kitchenaid microwave (model number KBMS1454SSS-1; serial number XNW1817213)
For the second time in the last 12 months, the COVER INLET of a Kitchenaid microwave (model number KBMS1454SSS-1; serial number XNW1817213) has melted while heating food. The cover inlet is a plastic plate located in the interior of the microwave oven itself. As it occurred in February 2012, melted plastic landed on food. During the first incident, while we were waiting for the technician to serve the device we continued using the microwave; the end result was that the whole electronic panel of he device was rendered useless and had to be replaced. This time, as soon as we noticed that the cover inlet melted we stopped using the microwave.
Because this is the second incident, we contacted Kitchenaid about it and asked why this was happening twice and how to prevent it. Kitchenaid representatives indicated that they did not know what the cause was or how to prevent future similar incidents.
Given that this is the second time this plastic part melts, the potential for a fire exists, because people can inadvertently ingest melted plastic debris we are reporting this incident. We hope you contact the company to address this issue.

We have a 2 year old Kitchenaid Microwave Model#KCMS2055SSS which was installed and built in when our new house was built. Recently the microwave began starting by itself. For example, after running it and the food/ timer is done, we take the food out, close the door, the microwave then starts up again by itself with no time programmed. We reported this to Kitchen Aid/Whirlpool and they are sending out a technician. However, after the call we read about many prior reports about another Kitchen Aid microwave model that had the same problem. We thought we better report this.

If we were not home or asleep when it happened our entire home would have been on fire. I see on line that there have been numerous complaints about this same issue with this same model number....why is a recall not happening? Kitchenaid wants to replace the control panel but unlike some others my control panel did not state “PAN” or anything at all and I don’t feel safe with this unit..a recall needs to be issued this is a very SERIOUS matter which can cause much destruction! We are not talking about a broken handle we are talking about a fire occurring!

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Microwave Hood Combination Model KHMS 155L
February 22, 2013 U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission 4330 East West Highway, Bethesda, MD 20814-4408 Dear Sir: While reading the latest issue of “Consumer Reports” (March, 2013), I came upon the article called “Microwave Mystery.” If I didn’t know better, I would swear that the article was written about my situation. Let me explain. In the fall of 2007, I purchased a KitchenAid Microwave Hood Combination. (Model KHMS 155L), and had it installed, professionally, over my range top. For about 2 1/2 years, it worked perfectly. In July of 2010, I began having problems with the touchpad. It would not work correctly. I called the 800 number, indicated in the manual, and was informed that a local service representative would be scheduled to fix it. Since it was still under warranty, the part would be replaced for free but I would have to pay the service charge. Long story short, I had to cancel several appointments because the touchpad started to work again. Then, on August 3rd, at 2:30A.M., I heard a strange noise coming from the kitchen. I am a senior citizen and a light sleeper (comes with age). So, I went downstairs to investigate and found the microwave running, on high, by itself. Thankfully, no damage was done. I called the 800 number the next day, and was connected to a woman who handled “property damage claims.” I informed her that, fortunately, I turned the unit off almost immediately. She apologized and asked if there was any damage, and I told her no. Then, she reiterated that the touch pad would be replaced for free and, this time, there would be no service charge. I queried if the company had had similar problems with this unit and she said yes. The control pad was replaced and it as worked fine ever since. I am still a little concerned, however, because there was never a recall and This article was the first time that I had read about it. What if it happens again and I don’t wake up in time? It is a scary thought! Very truly yours, [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] P.S. 1 contacted Consumer Reports about the problem and they suggested I contact you people. If you would like any additional information, my phone number is [REDACTED] and my email address is [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Built-in microwave
I have a kitchen aid built in microwave oven which was installed in 2002. During use, the top side of the microwave sparked on caught on fire. The T.V. dinner in the microwave was not the culprit. There was no metal in the microwave. It was the microwave itself that ignited. The flames melted the top of microwave.

The product, in the report: over the range microwave oven
The microwave oven turned on by itself on 3 different instances. Two instances occurred during the night and the consumer’s dog woke them up to the sound from the microwave. One incident occurred during the day. There was no property damage and no injuries.
When this happens, the keypad starts beeping and the microwave powers on. This happened 3 times in the last 4 years. When this happens, the consumer unplugs the microwave from the wall outlet. The consumer still uses the microwave with caution. The consumer said that if they leave their home for an extended period of time, they unplug the unit from the wall outlet.
The consumer wrote the mfr. 3 different times about this problem over the last couple years, but he never received a response.
The consumer said that his model was included in the news story in the following link: http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/money/consumer/consumer_reports/self-starting-microwaves-impose-fire-hazard and this is how he was informed that the problem was more widespread than he knew.
UPDATE: Just an iten of note, two days after consumer spoke to CPSC, he received a call from Whirlpool after his third notification. He mentioned the article that he had seen on ABD concerning fires related to my microwave. He also stated that he had notified the CPSC of this issue. Whirlpool then stated that they would replace the key pad on the microwave at no charge to me. The repair was completed on 3/5/13.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid KHMS155L Over the Range, 1000 watss, 1.5cf without convection, Dept 15.44 in., Height 16.31, width 30 inches
A KitchenAid over the range microwave (KHMS155L) was installed in our vacation condominium in 2009. During a visit in November 2009, the microwave spontaneously came on while we were in another room. We turned it off but it spontaneously came on several other time during the week. After several episodes, we unplugged it from the receptacle. We reported the problem to KitchenAid in December 2009 that “we have a microwave that was defective from the date of purchase and a significant fire hazard. It comes on spontaneously. We found many other consumer complaints. You should recall this product before someone is injured.” We also filed a complaint on a Consumer Affairs website. On December 10, 2009 we received an email response from KitchenAid Customer Service “I am handling this matter and would like to assist you. Please contact me (toll-free) at [REDACTED]. My hours are 8:15 am – 5:00 pm, Eastern Standard Time, Monday – Friday.” If you receive a recording when you call, please leave a telephone message, reference file no. [REDACTED], and provide a telephone number where you can be reached during business hours.” The email was signed “[REDACTED] Safety Correspondence Specialist [THREAD ID:[REDACTED]] During the telephone conversation they offered to repair the unit, but we felt it was a safety hazard so we declined and replaced it with another brand. We didn’t ask for compensation. We just wanted the microwave out of the condo before it caused a fire and we wanted to alert them to the problem. We were amazed when we read the article in Consumer Reports where they seemed unaware of spontaneous start problems.

Caller is reporting his microwave/convection model# not available at this time with serial# not available at this time purchased in CO estimated around June 15,2005.
Caller and family use the microwave portion of this unit only and they use it regularly.
Caller didn’t have any safety issue with this product until the week of January 14th, 2013 when he was baking potatoes (no wrapping on them at all), when it caught fire with flames coming down from the top of the microwave downward into the microwave after running for only 4 or 5 minutes into the 22 minute cycle.
Caller’s son alerted him to the microwave being on fire.
Caller immediately turned the microwave off leaving the door shut so that it would run out of oxygen.
Caller contacted service tech thinking the fire may have been a result of some sort of build up, however the service tech stated that the magnetron was “going out”.
He assured family that he had repaired this problem.
When caller came home he turned the microwave on, no cooking, just checking it out and it caught fire again the in the same manner as the first time.
The service tech and the caller came to the agreement that there may be an issue with the microwave being manufactured in a manner that does not allow cleaning of the working areas at the top inside of the unit.
Service Tech also advised him that he should on occasion boil water in the microwave and let the steam clean the microwave.
He followed the service tech’s advice and has had no problems since he began “steaming”.
Caller contacted the manufacturer, spoke with [REDACTED] who advised the caller that the problem was the magnetron but offered no remedy.
There are no injuries reported with this incident
Caller is asking that his microwave be inspected by CPSC, add a warning to the instructions advising consumers that the microwave can catch fire if this “steaming” is not practiced to keep those components in the top of the microwave
It was the use of the convection feature that started the two fires. The consumers rarely use that feature.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid KHMS155LSS microwave
KitchenAid KHMS155LSS Microwave started on its own. I was in the kitchen washing dishes and the microwave turned on with a count of 3:00 minutes. I watched it for about 30 seconds then opened it up and put a class of water in it and it continued to count down to 0 then started back up again at 3:00 min. At that time I unplugged it. I called Kitchenaid (Whirlpool) and they stated to me that they were aware of the problem and would send out someone to fix it. I said I had no warranty but they said that it was covered. I just saw a news report about this microwave and Kitchenaid denies there is a problem. So why did they fix it for free and why when you google that model number numerous hits come up with the same problem. This was not a cheap microwave--$800 top of the line. I’m afraid to leave it plugged in. What does it take for a recall--a death?

Caller is reporting her microwave that was delivered December 3rd, 2011.
Approximately three months after delivery the keypad was flashing and was sporadic in it’s actions and she contacted the manufacturer March 6th, 2012, spoke with [REDACTED] who advised her to unplug the microwave then plug it back in and it would reset the clock then reset the touchpad.
After she heats something in her microwave in a seemingly normal incident, she turns it off, shuts the door but the light remains on or comes back on and the microwave continues to run.
She has it the “off” pad in attempt to shut it off.
This happens 50% of the time after she uses it since the incidents began June 15, 2012 estimated.
She contacted the manufacturer January 29th, 2013 and they are sending a tech on January 30th
There have been no injuries

The product, in the report: Superba Wall oven/ microwave combo by KitchenAid
I have a KitchenAid Superba microwave/wall oven combo. The model number is KEMC308KSS0 and the serial number is XL5004852. This problem comes up at least once a week. This morning it was damaging and dangerous. The door to on microwave has a hook on both sides, this is to latch it closed. The hook sticks up about one inch and clothes catch on the hook. Sweaters, bathrobes anything long sleeved or your arm itself. This morning I was taking boiling soup from the microwave and my sleeve caught on the door and the soup went flying all over my hand and the floor. I now have painful burns on my hand. I’ve done a brief internet search and know I am nit the only one with this problem. I also understand KitchenAid has changed their design, eliminating the hooks. Unfortunately for those of us who can’t afford to buy a new wall unit we are stuck with this hazard.

Had on several occasions in recent months found microwave to be very warm when not in use (including no lights or fan on). I could find no explanation for this.
I came downstairs at 6am last week and found the microwave running. It had self-started! I do not know how long it had been running but it was extremely hot. Unplugged the microwave and searched online for recalls or similar problems. Found a number of blogs with similar complaints about this model.
I subsequently plugged in the microwave to use it and after use did not unplug it but watched it closely. After a few hours it randomly beeped and then ultimately self started again.
I have unplugged it and have not used it since.

Called Kitchenaid customer service, they are sending a repair person at no cost. They seem to be aware of the problem, but it shouldn’t be up to consumers to bring it to their attention in individual cases.

When we came back home, we noticed our Kitchenaid Microwave model KHMS155LSS-3 was beeping and was very hot. We turned it off and several minutes later, we observed it coming back on by itself for 3 minutes. We promptly turned it off and unplugged it before it had a chance to do something serious. This microwave is not that old and has not been used often. We investigated and found that this defect is quite common and it is more than shocking that neither Kitchenaid/Whirlpool or the government has issued a recall on this product. It is EXTREMELY dangerous and is only a matter of time before it kills someone.

My kitchen aid microwave model KHMS155LSS-4 started operating in the middle of the night on its own with the word “Pan” displayed on the keypad. When I cancelled the operation, the microwave stopped and had a F-2 Code displaying. The microwave restarted after some time and ran for a couple of minutes before I woke up again and stopped the microwave. I have since unplugged the microwave so it will not continue starting and stopping on its own.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid microwave hood combination
My kitchenaid microwave hood combination turned on spontaneously. I could not turn it off with the controls. It was displaying the word PAN. If I opened the door it would stop but beep annoyingly. If I closed the door it would start again. I found many, many reports of this on comsumer affairs.com. the model number is khms155lss. The only way I could turn it off was through the circuit breaker, as I could not pull out the u it to u plug. if I had not been home when this happened it may have well caused a fire.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Microwave Hood Combination Model KHMS155LSS-4
I purchased a new condo in March 2011 and the kitchen has a built in KitchenAid microwave hood combination Model KHMS155lSS-4. Today while sitting in my living room I heard something beep on several occasions so finally I decided to investigate only to find out that my microwave oven had turned itself on. The error code is either -F2- or PAN and the only way to keep it from coming on is to keep the door open or unplug it. I unplugged it earlier hoping that it would reset itself, but when I plugged it back in it started again by itself. This is very disturbing as there’s nothing in the microwave and I’m afraid it may cause a fire.

The product, in the report: Over the range microwave hood combination.
Please help us. Every resident of our five-story, 137-unit condo, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is designated as an official City of Seattle Landmark, is in clear and present danger due to defective KithchenAid microwaves. The parent company, Whirlpool Corp., is headquartered in Benton Harbor, Michigan. At about 11:45 p.m. on May 22, 2012, my husband and I were asleep in bed in our third story loft when we were jolted awake by a booming sound that felt as though a jetliner was revving its engines for takeoff. As we tumbled over each other as we jumped out of bed, we saw flashes of red and yellow dancing underneath the doorsill of our closed bedroom door. Just as I put my hand on the door to open it, the acrid smell of something on fire hit me like a club. Opening the door, we saw red and yellow arcs jumping wildly inside the microwave. While this was going on, the booming sound continued, along with a pervasive scorched smell spreading over the condo. Within seconds, my husband grabbed the fire extinguisher in our kitchen as I called 911 to summon the fire department. My husband managed to turn the microwave off in the midst of this terrifying incident. Suddenly, the large red and yellow arcs (what we presume were electrical arcs) halted, along with that terrible booming sound. The glass turntable was scorched, along with the plastic tripod doohickey it sits on. The firefighters arrived shortly after my call, and although all but the smell had died before their arrival, they checked to make sure there was nothing smoldering inside the wall, etc. Moreover, one of the firefighters checked the main circuit breaker of our unit. There were no signs of any fuses anywhere being tripped and there were no blackened areas around any outlets nor did our condo lose power at any time during or after this incident. This is an EXTREMELY important part: Please bear in mind that the microwave - which had not even been in use in a couple of days - TURNED ITSELF ON IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. Not only were we in a lot of danger, so was everyone else in the building. What if we had not been there to react so quickly? There is no doubt in our minds that the microwave would have exploded in flames. The firefighters indicated they suspected a possible defective microwave. They told us not to attempt to turn it back on and it is currently unplugged. Since we reported this very dangerous incident to other residents and our board of directors, other scary situations involving KitchenAid microwaves are pouring into our board. Those reports always involve the microwaves turning themselves on at will and in many of the cases, the residents were UNABLE to get their microwaves to turn off without unplugging them. This is extremely unsafe. One resident, for example, wrote our board that he was so concerned with the microwave situation that he termed it a matter of “life and death. “ Despite repeated requests by our board and complaints from residents, Whirlpool has adamantly refused to send out technicians to inspect the microwaves in all units. There are additional reports of very dangerous incidents on consumer blogs ( such as www.fixya.com) concerning the same model number, KHMS155SS-3. Moreover, when my husband initially contacted the KitchenAid hotline and told a staffer about firefighters being summoned, etc., she said that KitchenAid believes the fire dangers are caused by faulty circuit boards built into that model of microwaves. She expressed zero surprise about what happened to our micro. We are horrified that the company did not and has not informed residents in our building about the dangers they apparently are aware have been taking place. Although, after hearing about the fire department being summoned in out case, they agreed to repair our microwave. Despite calls to the company’s headquarters, Whirlpool told us and others in a defiinite decision that they would only check out safety issues with microwaves ONLY after something happens or a problem is encountered with each individual microwave. In my opinion, that is a short- sighted, dangerous decision. It’s akin to knowing that an airplane fleet has been experiencing safety issues and the acting only if a plane gets in an emergency situation with passengers on board. These incidents with the microwaves can and have happened with zero warning from the microwaves. We want a recall issued, especially since the company refuses to provide safety checks by their technicians at no cost to consumers and the fact that they have not notified consumers about defective microwaves that could harm or kill their customers, Thank you for reading this. Please help us. Our board can be reached at [REDACTED].

The product, in the report: over the rangehood microwave oven
To whom it may concern. I am an owner and board member of a 137 unit condominium building in Seattle WA. Recently we have had about 8-10 know issues with our KitchenAid over the range microwaves that were installed in the building during construction. The construction was started in 2005 and the last condos were finished by the end or 2007, approximately. All 137 units have the same microwave installed. The issues are (1) self-starting with no turn off possible at the key pad. (2) Self-starting with sparking (fire department was called in this case) (3) self-starting and unit becoming extremely hot to the touch. In each case the only way to turn off the unit was to un-plug or switch off the breaker at the panel. KitchenAid model #’s involved are: KHMS155LSS-3 and KHMS155LSS-4. Manufactured between 2005-2006 I think. Is the CPSC or Saferproducts.gov aware of these issues with these KitchenAid models? Is there an official recall that you know about? How do citizens start or petition a recall of these units? My interaction with KitchenAid to date is that they will fix, for free, only if you have experienced a problem. If you have not had a problem they will send out a technician but the owner will incur the service charge if no problems are found. Our HOA is deeply concerned that the microwaves that have not had any problems to date are basically sitting time bombs in our condos and have the potential of causing serious consequences including death if KitchenAid does not fix or recall all microwaves with these model numbers. As a homeowner I have not experienced any of these problems with my microwave. But since I have been made aware, my microwave stays unplugged when not in use. As a board we have sent out numerous awareness emails and letters stating the hazards and if individual owners are concerned to un-plug there microwave and to contact KitchenAid. KitchenAid is unwilling to mitigate this issue as a group problem. Is there anything more, as an association, we can do to get help in fixing this extreme and potential deadly issue? Your insight and help would be greatly appreciated.

KitchenAid Microwave/Hood caught fire. Model: KHMS155LSS-4 Serial: TR T 19 24182 Manufactured May 2006
I was using only the timer and the fan at the time. The microwave itself was not on at the time. There were flames inside the right back corner of the unit. Fortunately, I was home at the time. Smelled the smoke and was able to extinguish the fire.
This is the SECOND time the unit caught fire. The last time the unit was off and somehow turned itself on.
I researched this issue on the internet and saw that it is a common problem.
I am surprised that these units have not been recalled.

The product, in the report: Microwave/Hood combination KitchenAid Model KHMS155LSS-3 serial # TRS4039513 installed October 2005
KitchenAid Microwave/Hood combination model # KHMS155LSS-3, serial # TRS4039513 purchased installed October 2005 when the building (new structure) was built.
I noticed that several times, the microwave seemed to have gone on by itself, because I noticed several time that it said: “END” on the display panel. On two occasions I noticed it go on and it usually lasted anywhere from 30 secs to a minute and sometimes longer. When I noticed this, I immediately unplugged it. I called the building manager who told me that over 20 units have reported the same problem. When the first two or three were reported to KitchenAid they sent a replacement control panel which seems to go awry after a while and charged the owners some $300. When it got more prevalent, the building manager called KitchenAid and spoke to a supervisor who agreed to refund the money and from then on, they have been replacing the control panel for free.
I think this could be a real fire hazard especially for unit owners who go on vacation and do not unplug the units. It certainly had a lot to do with an increase of my electrical bill last month. KitchenAid has not offered any explanation for this problem.

His wife briefly walked away, after a few minutes they heard noises in the kitchen. She discovered flames inside the microwave. His wife pressed the off button and the flames died down and the fire did not extend beyond the microwave. The consumer opened the microwave and saw a blackened residual of the potato. The plate was blackened and charred. The consumer discovered also that the plate was sitting on a plastic spindle that had burned thru and only half of the spindle was left. The consumer also noticed paint had burned off right underneath where the potato was sitting. He contacted the manufacturer who sent an authorized technician. The tech said he should discontinue use. The manufacturer said the incident occurred because of consumer neglect. He says they are not doing anything under the warranty. The manufacturer says that it has to do with the potato that they were microwaving. That they did not use aluminum foil and The consumer says they are stone walling them. the manufacturer also wanted to know about the electric circuit to the microwave. when the incident was over, the microwave screen still read “sensing”. Consumer Added that they were told to no longer use the microwave as it was damaged beyond repair as a result of this incident.

I would like to bring this critical matter to the attention of Whirlpool and KitchenAid. I trust you will be able to properly direct my concerns with the quality and safety of Microwave Hood Combination product, KHMS147HSS.
I am the first original owner of the KHMS147HSS with the serial number XCJ4511772. The unit was purchased on 11/30/1999 for $663.00, and installed in my home as part of its new construction on 3/11/2000.
From practically “day-one,” I have had problems with the unit. It was a part of the fire-safety recall of January, 2001. Claim #1190520 was opened with Whirlpool on 11/7/2001. The in-home repair technician,[REDACTED], struggled to implement the recall enhancement on 1/2/2002.
Being that I was an un-married bachelor, the microwave merely functioned as a device to reheat leftovers and heat water for my morning oatmeal. Due to the safety recall, I never had confidence in the unit. But with a purchase price of $663.00, I naturally continued to use the unit. That is, until this past Saturday.
When the unit’s interior oven light was not functioning, I located my original owner’s manual for the steps to replace the burnt-out light bulb on 11/12/2011. Following the instructions, I disconnected the power cord and proceeded to “remove the burnt-out bulb by squeezing the wire clip together, pulling to the right and lifting up” as described in the owner’s manual, page 23, step 5.
At this point, I observed sparks and the odor of burnt electrical components. I was perplexed on how this could happen with no power applied to the unit. After changing the light bulb and reconnecting the power cord to the unit, the microwave would no longer function. It was dead, yet the electrical outlet was verified to be a live circuit by means of a voltage tester. Upon further examination, I was shocked to see the poor design of the “wire clip” being a metal conductor in extremely close proximity to that of the light bulb socket holder and its non-insulated wire connections. I have included these pieces for your Whirlpool technicians’ examination. I conclude this design to be yet another major safety hazard of this Microwave Hood Combination product!!!
The now defective KHMS147HSS with serial number XCJ4511772 is in the recycle center of Naperville, IL, (180 Fort Hill Drive, Naperville, IL 60540), 11/15/2011.
