No one hurt Made Jun 20, 2014, sent to the company Jun 30, 2014, published by CPSC Jul 15, 2014
The product, in the report: Kenmore .09 Cu. Ft. 900 Watts Microwave Oven Model No. 405.73099310 Serial No. 14044006458 (Other SN: EB00451010214417110410) (Other Item: 790057173494)
I just purchased a new Kenmore Microwave Oven Model No. 405.73099310 Serial No. 14044006458 from the Visalia California Sears on 06/19/2014 and discovered the microwave will start on its own and will not turn off unless you unplug the device.
When I first installed the microwave in my kitchen, I plugged the microwave into the power outlet on the wall and began cleaning up the packaging. Within a few minutes, the microwave started on its own (turned on) and would not turn off. I had to unplug he power cord from the wall to turn it off.
After plugging the microwave oven back into the power outlet, the over started and would not allow me to press the stop button to stop the power. I again had to unplug the device. When trying it again and the microwave would start when I open then close the door. I have video fro my phone showing what I am explaining.
No damage or injury to my person or home, but extremely fear this will cause a fire if turned on and left unattended. I am planning to return this defective microwave back to Sears as soon as possible unless otherwise directed.
In addition, I have phone video of how microwave acted and photos of identifying information if needed.

Emergency room Made Feb 19, 2014, sent to the company Feb 26, 2014, published by CPSC Mar 13, 2014
The product, in the report: Kenmore shelf top microwave, white in color, 23” length x 15” wide x 13” height, Date manufactured and purchased were around July of 1999, the dates below did not go back earlier than 2004.
On 2/10/14 at 0400, I was sitting at my desk playing online. I started smelling something burning. I checked my heaters and they were fine. I went into the kitchen to get a drink and found the microwave electrical panel was on fire with flames about 18 inches in the air, the microwave was not running at the time. I immediately grabbed the the baking soda. I yelled for my husband as I was putting out the fire. The door had opened from the heat, then sung back and burned the left lateral side of my hand as it was on fire also. The house started filling up with smoke and the fie fire alarm went off. My husband took over putting the fire out so I could take care of my hand. I was running cold water on my hand which had melted black plastic on it and I pulled most of it off. After we we got the fire out and the microwave outside, I drove to the Emergency room, where they treated my hand for a second and third degree burn. As I was leaving, I ran into my Team Coordinator who suggested I go see my person physician. I then went to my doctor who prescribed a cream for my hand and told me to keep it wrapped. By Friday 2/14/14, after I got off work at o730 am. My pain was unbearable and looked like it was getting an infection. I went back to my doctor who then prescribed antibiotic and sent me to a wound care physician. My husband called Kenmore and was told that there was nothing they could do. He asked to speak to a supervisor and put him on hold, they never came back on the line. He then called Sears, and was told somebody would call back within 2 hours. No one ever called back. He recalled the 2 companies again, which referred him back to each other with no results.

The interior part of the door (plastic) on one side is melting to the metal area of the microwave when using the popcorn setting. When cooking is completed and you push the button to open the door , nothing happens, so you have to grab the top and bottom of the door and pull it open. There is now an area 1”x1/4” on the door that is melted away and a burn mark on the metal about the same size. This happens every time the popcorn setting is used.

First aid Made Aug 27, 2013, sent to the company Sep 5, 2013, published by CPSC Sep 19, 2013
The product, in the report: White, Built-In Wall Kenmore Microwave
Kenmore Microwave Oven over my stove malfunctioned. I was using the exhaust fan in the microwave, but not cooking in the microwave itself. I was standing in front of my stove, cooking on the stovetop with the microwave eye level in front of me, when I smelled burning rubber/plastic. Looking for the source, I opened the microwave, burning my hand on the glass turntable plate, which had become unexpectedly and dangerously hot, melting the plastic turntable and roller wheels, and causing the glass turntable plate to bubble up. After I turned down the fan and let it cool, the glass turntable plate broke in half along the bubble that had formed from melting glass. If I had not been standing right there, the microwave malfunction would most likely have set my cabinet on fire.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite 1.5 cu. ft. 1200 watts TCP countertop microwave oven, model 721.7915
After 10 months of normal household use, our Kenmore countertop microwave overnight, model #721.7915, began smoking and emitting the smell of burning electrical wires. We discontinued use and returned it to Sears, which determined that the magnetron was faulty. Sears replaced it with an identical model, which began emitting the same burning smell after only 7 months of normal household use. We immediately discontinued use but are concerned that there is some defect in the parts or design of this product because this problem occurred twice in two different machines. Fortunately, we saw no flames and there was no injury or property damage. We do not know if the smoke was toxic.

The product, in the report: kenmore elite microwave oven model 721.66463500
**POTENTIAL CAUSE OF FIRE** Kenmore Elite Microwave Oven: model 721.66463500
This microwave started running without any operator input, without anyone even in the room with it.
It activated and started running on its own.
Thankfully I was home, walked in the kitchen, heard it running, and was able to stop it. It was so hot I could not pick it up to remove it. If I had not stopped it, it could have burned my house down, being surrounded by wooden cabinetry.
The control panel was replaced approximately 2011 by Sears after failing to function. The unit was first purchased in Dec 2006. The brand is Kenmore “Elite”. Obviously it is not “Elite” in any respect.
The control panel input has obviously shorted out again but this time activating spontaneously.
Touch sensitive electronic control panels do not mix well with heat and humidity. That is a well established fact. A return to old type control knobs and push buttons would make for safer and longer lasting appliances.
Putting sensitive push button control panels on items with high heat and humidity is moronic, and in this case, imperiled life and property.
I’ve heard that doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is the definition of stupidity. That’s what I think these touch sensitive controls are on appliance with high heat and humidity are...stupidity.

Our Kenmore over the range microwave self started on 9/1/12. Luckily, we were home when it happened so we were able to unplug it. The model was recalled and fixed by Sears approximately in 2001. We called the Sears repairman and he couldn’t diagnose the problem with certainty but said that if it self-started once, it will self start again.

The product, in the report: Black Kenmore Over the Range Microwave Model #721.80409400 Serial #409KM01048
I have a Kenmore Over the Range Microwave Model #721.80409400 Serial #409KM01048 Manuf. date Sep 2004, but bought end of 2004. Was cooking broccolli in the microwave for 5 minutes and had about 1 minute left. Look at the microwave and flames were shooting out from the vent above the door. I quickly opened up the microwave door to stop the microwave, but nothing happened. It kept on running making a zapping noise. I quickly unplugged and that stopped the microwave, but the flames were still shooting out. We quickly got the fire extinguisher and put out the flames, but the cabinets around the microwave were extremely hot to the touch. All my alarms were going off and the fire dept. showed up. We quickly unhooked the microwave from the installed bracket and brought it outside. The fire dept inspected the cabinet and walls and noticed the black marks and said any longer it would have caught onto the cabinets and walls. Thank goodness I was right there. Microwaves are supposed to be safe to use for kids and elderly which I have both in my house. My house would have burned down if any of them would have used it. They would have not been able to respond like we did. My kids could have put something in the microwave and went upstair and left it and the house could have caught on fire. We called the recall center and found that there was a recall on 92,000 kenmore microwaves from 2000-2003, but not my model #. I called Sears directly and all they had to say was that it was not under warranty any longer like I was reporting that the microwave just stopped working, not “CAUGHT ON FIRE and almost burned down my house and who knows what else that could have happened”. We talked to 3 people who were supposed to be higher in charge than the last and nobody could do anything. I even asked if there was something I could fill out to report this because maybe there should be recall on this microwave just like the 92,000 others. Nope, there was nothing like that available. My question is how many people just said “OK, thanks” and hung up. The last person we talked to said they would have someone higher up call within 2 hours, but of course that phone call never came in. They did finally give us a case # [REDACTED] after being on the phone for over an hour, but what that was for I’m not sure of. It just distubs me that nothing was even asked about how bad the fire was or if anyone got hurt. It was like it’s common for a mircrowave to catch on fire. I thank God this didn’t turn out worse than it was, but I’m astonished how this is being handled.

Kenmore countertop microwave oven starts when the door is opened, even when the unit is off but plugged in. To use the unit safely, you now have to unplug it before opening the door, and plug it in only after the door is closed. This is the second identical unit of this model we’ve had, the first one was returned under warranty but had the same problem after only a few months of use. The current unit began to experience this problem after 3.5 yrs of ownership.

I purchased and installed a new 2011 Kenmore Elite microwave oven model #721.86012010 on 5/18/2012. The first time I turned it on to heat up food a fire started inside the right hand side wall of the unit where the convection fan is located. The fire lasted for about 20 seconds with significant size flames and lots of smoke exiting the unit. This fire could have burned down my house if it had lasted any longer.
I removed the unit and inspected for any damage that may have been caused during installation and determined there was no damage. I went online and [REDACTED] “kenmore microwave and fire” and found several notes from other consumers claiming to have had the exact same experience with the same Kenmore unit.
I called Sears appliance store where I purchased the unit to complain and was told I would need to surrender the unit to them for inspection before I could receive a refund. I decided not to surrender the unit and instead file a complaint with the CPSC.

I was heating food in the microwave. The heating cycle ended the timer buzzed and the oven went off, I opened the door and removed the food item. When I closed the door the microwave resumed heating. There was no time remaining on the timer and the clock was showing the time of day, not counting down as it does during cooking. I mmediately opened the door and reclosed it; the microwave again resumed heating. Finally after repeated door opening and closings, pressing the “Stop/Clear” button, and jiggling the door the microwave remained off with the door closed. I think this is a potential fire hazzard if the microwave continues to run with nothing in it and no shut off time.

Our Kenmore microwave continues to run when the door is open. This caused me to burn my hand when reaching in to retrieve a hot dish. It continues to function in all settings except when the door is open it runs until you close it and set it for what you want to cook..... I believe the fact that the turn table and unit runs when the door is open is a definite safety hazard. Because the oven is 15 months old Sear’s refused to even look at it. They tell us that it would cost more to repair than replace. However I am concerned that someone else may get more seriously burned from this type of malfunction.

The product, in the report: Microwave-Exhaust Hood Combination
During the first quarter of 2001 my wife and I purchased a Kenmore model XC K 49 19920 “Microwave-Hood Combination” appliance from Sears’s retail store in New Hartford, NY.
On October 16, 2001 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a safety recall of microwave oven/exhaust fan hood combination units sold under the Whirlpool®, KitchenAid®, and Kenmore® brand names that had serial numbers beginning with XC due to the problem of overheating and catching fire.
For whatever reason my wife and I did not receive notice of the recall. (We assume it may have been sent to our physical, street address rather than our mailing, Post Office box address.)
In any event, in August 2010 our microwave/hood unit began “sparking” and making a “grinding” noise.
We stopped using the unit and contacted Sears to arrange for repair. At that time we were advised the unit was subject to a CPSC recall and the repair would be made at no cost to us.
August 20, 2010 the Sears service technician came to our home to repair the unit. As part of the repair a “disk” had to be sealed in place to “prevent steam or oil vapors from reaching the wave-guide.” However, silicone sealant included in the technician’s “repair kit” had hardened and was unusable. As a result, the technician attempted to make the repair with an alternate, construction grade silicone sealant.
The repair appeared to be effective and we resumed using the unit within several days.
In early October 2011 the unit began making the same sound as it had in August 2010. When we contacted Sears we were advised we would be responsible for the cost of repair ($129 plus parts) and that the previous repair was warranted for 3-months only. When I contacted Whirlpool (manufactured of the unit) I was told the CPSC file was closed and they offered no assistance other than to sell me a new unit for $259.
Since:
a) The unit contained an original manufacturing defect which was NOT corrected in August 2010 b) To use the unit poses a threat of overheating and fire
We are dismayed at Sears and Whirlpool’s lack of concern and failure to act in a responsible manner to correct the problem once and for all.

The product, in the report: Kenmore 27’ double combo microwave/wall unit Item number 48803 serial number 79048803.110
Kenmore double microwave/oven wall unit - I was using microwave to heat a cup of coffee. This microwave does not utilize a glass turntable, it is a galvanized metal type. It seems the turntable must of geared off one of the rollers and came into contact with the wall of the microwave. It opened up the side panel and exposed whatever material is underneath and started producing white sparks. I immediately stopped using the unit and turned it off. I contacted Kenmore and Sears at 1888-567-3438 and they did not think this was a safety issue. I am afraid this unit can catch on FIRE rather quickly .

Using Kenmore microwave oven with glass tray that moves side-to-side. Midway through cooking (about 3 minutes) I heard a sharp “ping.” Opened the door and found that the glass tray had broken into two pieces. Break was not straight, but had a curve to it. It did not shatter. Sears replaced glass tray as it was still under warranty.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Microwave model # 565.69580 could not find a serial number inside microwave
On August 24th, went to my kitchen and cooked a sausage in a little water for 2 mins. Sat down to eat my lunch and 10 minutes later, I heard a pop from my kitchen, I asked my husband if something fell upstairs, he stated no, as I was getting up from the couch and he started coming down the stairs and noticed smoke from the kitchen. The microwave touch pad was on fire. I turned the breaker switch off for that plug and he unplugged the microwave. He went and grabbed the fire extinguisher and put out the fire. He then grabbed the microwave using hot pad mittens and took it outside. I opened all the windows and doors. I purchased our Kenmore Microwave in 1999. I have never had a microwave do this before.

Dear [REDACTED] ,
Thank you for choosing Sears. We appreciate hearing from you.
We understand that you are experiencing issues with your microwave. While we do not expect any appliance or product to fail within a pre-determined amount of time, there is always the possibility that this may occur. While it is unfortunate that this problem has arisen, we do offer the option of purchasing our protection agreements both at the time of purchase, and when the warranty expires, in order to safeguard your investment.
Due to the fact that the unit is not covered by either the manufacturer?s warranty, which is usually valid for the first year of ownership, or protection agreement, the responsibility of the cost for repairs of the appliance falls on the consumer. If you have any questions or concerns, or would like to discuss the matter further, please feel free to contact our Service Rework office at 1-800-659-7026.
We apologize for the issues you have experienced and thank you for choosing Sears. We appreciate your business.
Sincerely,

About 10 days ago, I was sitting at my computer, and we had a power glitch. It was quite short, but enough to reset my computer. I started rebooting the computer, and after a few minutes, I started to smell an electrical fire. I rushed around the house to find it, and finally saw an electrical fire inside our microwave, which was running. I quickly pulled the plug, and opened the door. The glass tray inside had a 2-3 inch hole melted in it. The glass was red hot, and took many minutes to cool enough to inspect. We were not cooking anything at the time, so the
microwave was empty.
I have been an electrical engineer for 45 years, and have developed many
products, some much higher power than this oven. It seems to me there are a few problems with this whole incident. Firstly, a micro-controller
should be designed to not be sensitive to a short power interruption, and certainly should not behave in an unpredictable behavior. Secondly, the glass tray in the oven should not be able to be melted simply by bombarding it with high energy microwaves. I don’t know if the glass was
the fault, or the plastic rollers actually burned, but the glass has a hole ‘melted’ in it. This may be due to a contamination in the glass. We
always keep the oven clean and well ventilated.
Thank God we were home at the time, as it could easily escalated into a home fire. We have left our house often without unplugging the oven, and
have not had this problem before. We do have a lot of interruptions of power, being very rural, but have not had this type of failure with any other appliance. I am concerned that the safety of others may be reflected in this incident. I also want Sears to repair or replace the oven with, hopefully, a more reliable unit. I have the information all documented, and will retain it all until I hear from you.
Thank you, respectfully, [REDACTED]
