The product, in the report: Kenmore 0.9 cu-ft microwave item no. 072-01-0044... UPC 190873011644
I recently purchased a Kenmore 0.9 cu-ft microwave in black item no. 072-01-0044 UPC 190873011644 from Target and discovered a very serious safety defect in the manufacture of this microwave. This is a countertop model microwave, The problem is the the stamped out feet in the metal bottom panel on this microwave allow this microwave to slide all over when you open or close the door. Today I just caught the microwave from falling when I opened the door. I feel there should be rubber feet on the bottom of the microwave to prevent it from sliding. Can you imagine what could possibly happen if a smaller person was opening the door and the microwave fell on them from sliding. If there was a hot meal in it the person could be burned or if it was a younger person they could be injured by the microwave hitting them possibly in the head. I feel for safety concerns this microwave needs to be recalled or contact the purchasers of this microwave and supply them with self stick rubber feet to stick on the metal feet before someone is seriously hurt.

The product, in the report: Kenmore microwave, white,
My Kenmore model 721.85032010 microwave caught on fire. I had warmed up a small piece of casserole for 2 minutes on a glass plate. About ten minutes later, my daughter looks up and notices there is a fire in the microwave. I opened the door and the top inside of the microwave where the heating element is was on fire. I immediately splashed a large glass of water on it but it wasn’t enough to put it out. By the time I grabbed the fire extinguisher on the counter and had the cap off, the fire had tripled in size. If I hadn’t had a fire extinguisher, it would have easily become unmanageable very quickly.

The product, in the report: kennmore above the stove microwave stainless steel
there were no injuries as I caught it in time . the microwave started running on its own but before it turned itself on I could smell wires burning then the light came on it wasn’t turning it was just on smelling like it was going to catch fire . I unplugged it and flipped the breaker off at thd main .I called and Sears would not replace it as it was like 10 days out from the 1 year warranty but this same microwave in the counter top one had a recall for burn Hazzard so all of these may have had the same thing wrong from manufacturer. still to this day we haven’t been able to replace it. I believe its the Megatron that burned out and this could have caught our home on fire had we been gone .Sears would not help us and I know had we been gone it would have caught fire .If they had the same recall on the countertop ones they need to see about this one as im probably not the only person this has happened to .

The product, in the report: Kenmore Household Microwave oven with Vent Fan
I contacted Sears several times about my microwave and each time they did nothing substantial to resolve an issue I reported. As of today, the microwave has started tripping our breakers which is a clear sign of an issue as there is only one other appliance on that circuit and that’s our electric ignition gas stove. We tested both and the microwave is definitely faulty.

The product, in the report: OTR Microwave
Kenmore Microwave 790.80333310 (manuf May 2018). Randomly kicked the circuit breaker off about 1 year of buying it. About 1.5yrs in, the heinous tone user to alert the user that the warming has stopped, got stuck on... I resorted to cycling the circuit breaker, which worked. Almost exactly 2yrs into the microwave’s life, it repeatedly tripped the CB. The CB will not reset now. CB initially tripped when opening the door to the machine, while the machine was turned on. Then tripped if pushing any button. Clearly there is an electrical malfunction in this young microwave which should be recalled. Im not the first to report a similar problem.

The product, in the report: Over the range microwave, stainless w black trim. Kenmore. Operated fine for almost 3 years, 1000 watts, bought new, contractor installed
Over-the-range Kenmore Elite microwave got so hot that plastic trim melted loose. Would not turn off. We had to get stepstool and unplug it. Last thing it was used for was to rewarm two mugs of coffee, one minute autostart like we have done a thousand times. We opened the door, took our mugs, shut the door. The microwave did nothing that would attract our attention. We then left the kitchen. I came back into the kitchen about 45 minutes later because there was an unpleasant smell. The microwave was on and the first thing I did was grab the door handle to open/stop it. Every surface was hot, and the black plastic above the door came loose, pieces came off and it continued to make operating sounds. I shut door, grabbed stepstool and unplugged it from outlet in cabinet above. Surrounding wood cabinets were very dangerously hot, so we wiped with water and I sat on a stool with the fire extinguisher ready while my husband went into another room with shared wall to see if on fire behind kitchen wall. No one turned the microwave on. We we’re lucky to have been home and noticed the hot plastics smell. Very minor burn on finger, ice, then, sprayed [REDACTED] on it. Extremely frightened.

The product, in the report: Kenmore 1100 watt, 1.6 Cubic Ft., counter top microwave oven Model 405 73163310
The microwave was set to 3 minutes and in use, when the consumer noticed a burning odor. She also saw smoke and sparks inside the microwave. She opened the microwave oven door and removed the paper plate, which was on fire, and threw it into the sink. The sparks stopped as soon as the door was opened. There was no metal inside the microwave. At the time of the incident, the paper plate was sitting on the glass tray that spins. When I opened the microwave door and removed the paper plate (that was on fire), there were also flames shooting from the inside / right side / vent holes - closest to the back inside wall of microwave.
Unplugged microwave and worked on clearing out the smoke in the kitchen from the microwave and the paper plate in the kitchen sink.
Afterwards, the consumer found the inner roof and both interior sides of the microwave were blackened in color.
There were no injuries. The microwave is co-owned. I have a hearing impairment and the connection was too low in volume for me to hear the manufacturer’s office staff voice while they put me on hold, so I asked Jean to talk to them. They transferred the call to their maintenance department and she ended up giving her name, address, phone number to them. At that point they said the warranty only covers during the first year from purchase.
8/14/2020: She called the manufacturer and told their rep. what happened. The consumer provided her model & serial number. The consumer was placed on hold, while the rep. consulted the service department. The service department rep. told her that if the microwave was less than a year old, they could send out a service technician, but there was nothing they could do. Nothing else transpired.
The consumer searched the Internet and saw that other people had experienced similar fires and some people even made videos of their incidents, with this manufacturer’s brand of microwave ovens.
The consumer cut the cord on her microwave, but will hold on to it for a few weeks, in case someone wants to view it.
The microwave was UL Listed: 54NJE214180 and SN: EB00471350314705110322, was on the back of it.

The product, in the report: Over the Range Microwave Kenmore manufacturer January 2018 stainless steel
I was sitting at my table in the kitchen when I smelled a heat burning smell and the microwave was not on the door was closed and I looked around my home to find the heat burning smell then all of a sudden I heard the microwave making a humming sound and its light was still off I opened the microwave door and the inside right panel was very hot like something was burning so I unplugged it from the wall outlet. I was not using it ,it just happened to start humming on it’s own and was heating up in the right side panel. I feel like if I hadnt been home ot could have caused my home to catch fire.it is a kenmore over the range microwave oven, model #790.80323310 Serial #KG 80452456 FCC ID VG8EM044KYY I called customer assistance and they want to advise a sears technician to come out for 256.00 to see what is the cause when I have read online that if the magnetron goes out it is warranted by Kenmore.I feel like if I had not been home it would had caused a fire.this is a potential fire hazard the microwave was manufactured January 2018 manufactured. please check this out as the similar kenmore microwave counter top type has a recall also.i plugged it back up this am to dee if it would even come on,it does come on but it doesnt work like apparently the megatron burned up on its own, fire hazzard..please investigate this for us .thanks so much [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite over the range microwave oven 1.5 stainless steel convection Model 790.80363310
While setting the timer on the microwave, the microwave was turned on instead for 15min with nothing in the oven. Upon noticing the microwave on after 10min, the oven was turned off and the inside of the door was glowing red in one spot. Upon opening the door, the glass in the inside part of the door was melted with a hole forming. After about 6 min of cooling, the entire glass panel cracked. As glass melts at extremely high temperatures, it is alarming that the microwave heated to such a high temperature with no safety features to turn it off. There is a similar microwave on the recall list but different serial numbers. This is truly a safety issue as someone could have been burned or worse.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Microwave (built in over the Kenmore range)
On May 28, our Kenmore Microwave caught fire while only the kitchen timer was on. My husband was able to put out the fire. We called the Sears Warranty service who sent out a technician on June 4. She said the microwave was unrepairable, and the warranty people would call. They did not, so we called them. They said the warranty did not cover a manufacturer’s problem, and gave us a number to call the manufacturer, which we did. We have been on the phone for over an hour trying to get someone to answer our call and replace our microwave. We keep getting another number to call! It is discouraging, to say the least. We already lost one home (to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and are lucky the microwave did not set the (new, as of 2013) house on fire!!

The product, in the report: Kenmore over the range microwave model 790.80339310, color black
Kenmore Microwave model 790.80339310 trips the house 25 amp, 120v circuit breaker if the microwave door is opened during the cooking cycle. Sears repair technician came out and reproduced the event on 100% of tries. He later opened the appliance checked all electronics and switches that could cause this and found no root cause. He contacted the senior technician by phone and was told that “you can not open the microwave door during cooking or it will trip the breaker”
Them instruction manual for the product (Kenmore 790.8033*) states under the heading “interrupting cooking” “You can stop the oven during a cycle by opening the door.”
Sear technician said he could not fix the problem because the senior technician said this normal behavior.
This is a unsafe condition. The circuit breaker is there to protect the house wiring, continued overheating of the wire is to be avoided. No appliance should trip a breaker unless a true problem is detected, certainly not when the door on a microwave is opened.
Checking on the internet by googling “ micro wave trips house breaker “ shows this problem to be wide spread.

The product, in the report: Microwave
The consumer indicates that the microwave in his home always shorts the circuit breaker as soon as the unit is engaged. The consumer notes that although the microwave is built into the cabinetry in his home, it has a label on the inside bottom that states that it is not a built-in unit.
The consumer had an electrician inspect the circuits in his home as well as the outlets and everything was functioning properly.
The consumer contacted the Manufacturer and explained the situation; the representative he spoke to informed him that because the unit is no longer under warranty, they could send a Service Technician to inspect the unit at a price.
The consumer indicates that on a daily basis, the unit was used two to three times however it has not been used for the past week or two.
The consumer plans on keeping his microwave for at least the next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.

The consumer is reporting this as a burn and injury safety hazard, he and his wife are afraid to place a casserole or other dish on the racks because if the rack falls with the dish then it could spill hot liquid on whichever is using it at the time. He contacted the manufacture and spoke with a helpline who when they had no answer for him advised him that there was no one above them for him to speak with and that there is nothing they could do to help him and his wife. There are no injuries being reported .

The product, in the report: micro wave model no 790-8053310 Serial Kg6457361 Company phone 1 800 469-4663 My claim number [REDACTED]
At the end of Nov. 2017 I reported the Micro-wave oven had a explosive light that went pow in the oven. I called my Sears home warranty to come out. They sent someone out to fix it. The technician id [REDACTED] came out on Dec. 5 2017. He installed some parts and left. The micro-wave worked for about a week in a half then blew out the same way again. I recalled for services. The same technician came out and tried to fix it however, this time knocked out the circuit breaker and the tv and vcr and the electric system on the first level. Anything running through that current was knocked off. I instructed the technician to remove the micro-wave from the socket and plug it into a floor socket, however he did not have an extension cord so I went outside to get the one plugged into the Christmas lights as it was the orange cord. However he did not wait and plugged it in again and blew the electric system again. I called the company and continue to be put off. This micro-wave was bought in Dec. 2016. at the time it was still under factory warranty. No one seems to be interested in the danger of this micro-wave. They sent someone out today Jan. 23. to try to fix it again in my house. I asked them to take it away. I have a claim with the manufacture of this company but they still refused to take it. I called and keep being put off. This item is defective and should be removed. I need help . What can I do.

The Kenmore Elite above range microwave (Model 721.86013010) has a handle that starts to peel its “stainless steel” coating - probably due to heat from the range. When it peels, it creates a sharp edge that can cut a person. I purchased a unit in 2013 and the first time it peeled (2015), the defect did cut a member of my family. I replaced the handle. The same problem has occurred again (no cuts this time as we were aware of the potential issue) and I need to replace the handle again.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Countertop Microwave
Our microwave was not being used at the time when it spontaneously burst into flames. Had we not been home and acted quickly to turn off the circuit breaker, which by the way had not tripped, and extinguished the fire quickly we could have lost our home!!! We contacted the local Sears to notify them of the problem with their defective product in able to initiate an investigation of the cause. They weren’t interested. We made 3 successive calls to higher level of Sears and the Kenmore Corporation. None of which were interested enough in the safety of their costumers to take a report or to take the defective product to be looked at by their Engineers to determine the cause of the spontaneous fire and catastrophic failure of their equipment. Therefore I feel strongly that other consumers need to be advised that this is a potentional problem or defect in the this model . The model number is 565.60502990. Serial # 9T2K009404. The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite wall oven/microwave combination. Model #790.49113410
Kenmore Elite combination microwave and wall oven model #49113. Purchased in 2016 (February) delivered March 31, 2016 but did not move into new home and start using until November 15, 2016.
The microwave started up on its own when I was not home. I returned home very late from an out of town trip to find the microwave running. I have security cameras in my home and one happened to be facing the kitchen door to the outside and also captured the microwave turning on by itself. Fortunately, the startup of the microwave and when I walked into the house was no more than a couple minutes and I was able to turn it off and cut power to the circuit before a fire could begin. Needless to say, this is a fire hazard.

This is to report a fire hazard - I have a Kenmore microwave oven model #721-62643200 serial #306 KM02112 made in Korea June 2003- purchase and installed by Sears in Nassau county, New York. I put two Taquitas on a paper plate in the microwave and set it for 1 minute. Within 30 seconds flames came shooting from the top interior of the microwave, caught the paper plate and all on fire. Fortunately I had a towel in my hand which I immediately put in water and doused the fire in the microwave. But it took several minutes to put out the fire. If I was not standing right by the microwave oven at the moment the fire started, the whole kitchen and house could have caught on fire -

The product, in the report: Kenmore Microwave, Black
We have a Kenmore Microwave that is less than 3 years old. For the past 2 weeks, it has been coming on by itself. There is no time left on the screen, and no one is near the microwave. Last night, I was in bed reading a book and heard it go on. My husband was watching tv in another room and had no idea it had come on by itself. We have been unplugging it when not in use, but I’m afraid we will forget to do this all of the time.
When it comes on by itself, it will not let me turn it off by punching the display, I have to unplug it.
I called the 1800 842 1289 customer serv number and they will not assist because I’m out of the 1 year warranty. Sears, where I purchased the microwave will not help either because I’m out of warranty and did not purchase an extended warranty.
As a consumer, I expect a microwave to last longer than this one has and I expect it to be safe and not to come on by itself. We have pets in the household, as well as we are concerned about our home. We will be taking this one to elec. trash waste hauler so that no one is endangered.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite microwave/hood combo. Stainless Steel.
The Kenmore Elite microwave model 790.80363310 that I purchased in September of 2014 experienced a failure of the interior glass door panel on or about 12/10/16. A hole about the size of a dime melted through the glass which caused the tempered pane to shatter. The microwave has always been operated according to the owners manual in that no metal or non-microwave able items have been inside when the microwave was energized. Glass does not melt until about 2600 degrees F so this is obviously a manufacturing defect and a safety concern. I have contacted Sears Holdings Corporation and have been told that the unit is out of warranty and they will not cover repairs.

On December 2, 2015, I bought a microwave (Kenmore Elite, model No.: 790.80373310 and serial number: KG54261192). When everyone in my house was sleeping on November 11, 2016 (after 11 months of using this machine), we were woken up due to smell of burning, and then we found out this machine was smoking and burned automatically. Fortunately, we controlled this unsafe situation. Afterward, we called the Sears Home Services for repair. On November 17, 2016, two technicians from the Sears Home Services came to my house and checked this machine with comments “No power to mag—found burned main bd and wire harness-all phy helper d2c”. Therefore, I would like to report a safety concern for fire hazard.

The product, in the report: Kenmore combination microwave Model: 721.86012010
While having dinner Saturday night, November 19, 2016, our Kenmore Model 721.86012010 began to operate. I tried to stop it by pressing the off button without result, opened the door without result and was forced to pull the plug from the outlet to get the microwave from operating. During this episode there was a microwaveable food cover inside the oven which was melted to the turntable. I was not able to find a recall on this product nor was the local Sears store able to suggest a fix other than to throw it out and buy a new one. This was an expensive combi unit which makes me believe it either needs to be repaired by Sears or replaced by Sears. This unit was purchased in 08/12/2012.
We were lucky to be home when this incident occurred or I suspect we may have had a major fire. It is no longer possible to trust this unit so it remains unplugged and out of service until a repair can be made.

I have a Kenmore Microwave that I purchased a couple years ago. It has not been used very much, because I stored it after I bought it because I was remodeling my kitchen. This past week-end, when I used it, one of the plastic clips holding the metal rack in place caught on fire. I am guessing that the metal rack may have touched the metal wall causing arcing. I called Sears and they told me that it would cost $247.00 plus parts for a technician to come out and look at it. I think that is rediculous, considering how new the microwave is, and the little use that it has had. The Model Number is 790.80353310. The Serial Number is KG 34219001. Thank you.

The product, in the report: Microwave Oven (over the range)
Prior to the incident the microwave was used to re-heat several food dishes over a 5-8 minute period. About 10 minutes after we sat down to dinner, the following occurred:
The microwave inadvertently turned itself “ON” and began heating with the door closed. In an attempt to stop unit the “STOP” button was depressed and the door was opened. Unit continued to operate and I had to pull the AC power plug to stop unit completely. The contents in the unit included a glass carousel dish and a plastic plate cover. As a result the damage inflicted to the dish included several glass chips that had embedded themselves into the plastic cover which was badly melted from the overheating. Subsequent to this incident. we checked for product recalls and found several Kenmore microwaves manufactured through Dec. 2007 for the above failure mode. Our unit was manufactured in March 2008, and for the sake of a few months. I strongly suspect that internal components were probably identical to previously manufactured units. In a telephone discussion with Sears, they claimed no liability for this type failure because our model was not on the recall list There were no injuries from this incident, however I have a concern about exposure to radiation after my wife had opened the door initially to stop the unit.

The product, in the report: microwave hood combination
As I walked away from the stove of boiling water the vent went on by it’s own and a few seconds later there was a very loud popping sound. The electrical currant ceased. What seemed to be a minute later we smelled heavy plastic burning and found the undercarriage melted.
We have since removed and replaced the microwave with a very similar model, same make. I would like you to know that all but 2 (two) models that we viewed now have a metal lip or banier between underneath of the door.

The product, in the report: Microwave
The consumer indicates that she put a stick of butter in the microwave and almost immediately heard humming coming from the unit. She tried hitting the stop button and it would not do so; she proceeded to unplug the unit. The consumer opened the microwave and noticed that one of its side walls was black, indicating a fire had started.
The consumer indicates that she used the unit approximately eight times a day.
The consumer states that the unit had been previously serviced since the turntable was stuck.
The consumer disposed of the unit.
At the time the unusually loud humming began, which drew the consumer’s attention to look at the machine, there was a glow inside the machine. That was the point she tried to stop it from running. It did not, so she unplugged it.

My Kenmore microwave turns on by itself. I awoke to a running Empty microwave yesterday. I called Sears and they said there was no recall. The agent would not take the serial number or model number. I went out and bought a new microwave in a different brand. Sears doesn’t care. My oven is 3 yrs old and Sears could care less. I unplugged the fire hazard immediately.

I have a Kenmore countertop microwave oven model #72169122010 Serial #111TA05675. I have had it for several years but suddenly it stopped and when I opened the door it started microwaving with the door wide open. I tried to report it to Kenmore. They looked it up and said it is not a recall item so they can’t help me. How does something become a recall item if no one takes the information? I think this should be a recall item. When I googled the problem I saw several Kenmore and GE microwaves that ran with the door open.

This Kenmore Elite 2.2 cu. ft. Countertop Microwave w/ Extra-Large Capacity - Stainless Steel was purchased in July 2014. In the last few weeks my family of four has noticed unusual behavior of the microwave. Once started, it will sometimes turn itself off. The most concerning is the microwave will turn itself on without anyone being near it. This happened 2 nights ago. No one was in the kitchen and I heard it turn on and went and turned it off. This is a serious safety issue as if I would have not been home and heard it turn on, this could have started a fire. This microwave now sits unplugged in my kitchen.

The product, in the report: Microwave Oven - Counter top
Purchased a KENMORE Microwave Oven Model 405.7212310 in 2014. Not 100% on the purchase date, but we have used the microwave for more than a year. About a week ago, after heating up some food, the microwave turned itself ON after I closed the door. The clock was reading 00:00, but the light went on, carousel turned, fan and (I presume) MW device continued to go. Pushing the STOP button would not make it stop. Pushing the Door Release stopped the oven from operating. This happened once every few days last week, but this morning it happened 3 times. I called Sears/Kenmore Customer Assistance: 1-800-842-1289 spoke to [REDACTED] about the incident(s). He apologized that the unit was no longer under warranty, and suggested I bring the unit to an appliance repair shop.

The product, in the report: 2010 Kenmore Microwave/Wall Oven Combination. Built-in, BTW 1250-1500. 27 inch wide electric unit. Model #790-4884-3900. Serial #NF02338862.
On Sunday, June 28, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. while cooking with our 2010 Kenmore Microwave/Wall Oven, the microwave oven electrically malfunctioned. It happened when I started the unit to defrost a small amount of pesto in a Pyrex class measuring cup, and the microwave oven compartment immediately began to emit a loud electrical-current arc sound with many bright shooting lights, much as a lightning storm will do in a night sky. I called to my husband to shut down the unit, and by the time he got into the kitchen and the oven was shut down, this electrical arching had continued non-stop for nearly a minute. At approximately 8 p.m., or 1 1/2 hours after this incident, I noticed very bright arching lights in my left eye that continued throughout the night. The next day on Monday, June 29, 2015, I went to see my ophthalmologist, and after performing a thorough exam, she concluded that I had sustained “arc burns” on both eyes that were similar to the burns that arc welders can sustain while arc welding. In addition, during the week immediately after this incident I experienced an alarming increase in my blood pressure. In the week prior to this incident, my blood pressure averaged 127/78. After the incident my blood pressure steadily increased until Friday July 3, 2015 it registered 180/103, and I immediately went to see my doctor. I was temporarily given HTN medication to lower my blood pressure. I have also had an electrocardiogram to check my heart function, and I was found to be hypertensive. (In the past 12 years, I have not been on any HTN medications; I am a healthy, athletic slender 58 year old woman.) I believe there is a direct correlation between my experience with the microwave electrical current malfunction, the arcing injury to both of my eyes and the hypertension. Since the incident, we have never restarted this unit, and have since purchased a new Microwave/Wall Oven from a different manufacturer. We are keeping the Kenmore microwave oven in storage, in case it is needed for testing.

I was using my Kenmore Microwave oven to prepare bacon using a covered dish manufactured specifically for microwave bacon cooking. The dish contained all grease/spatter so none got on the microwave. During cooking, the microwave stirrer cover on top of the cavity spontaneously caught fire and partially burned. I was able to extinguish the fire without harm or further damage. There was no grease buildup or any other contributing factors on or around the stirrer cover. The inside of the oven was clean at the time of the fire. The cover was the only thing that burned, although the top of the cavity suffered some fire damage.

The product, in the report: Kenmore 1.6 cu. ft. Microwave, model number 790.80329310, serial number KG35208185, that was manufactured in December 2013.
On March 18, 2014, I purchased a Kenmore 1.6 cu. ft. Microwave, model number 790.80329310, serial number KG35208185, that was manufactured in December 2013. It worked flawlessly until the night of May 14, 2015. That night, while using the the Kitchen Timer function to time something in the oven below he microwave, the vent fan came on and caught my attention. When I went to turn it off, the interior light was on, the turntable was turning, and the fan would not respond to me pressing the button. Actually , no buttons would respond at all, but the timer kept going. I unplugged the unit and waited for a minute or so, thinking the unit might reset itself. I plugged it back in and everything went back on: light, turntable, and blower. When I reached to place my right hand on the front of the unit to open the door with my left hand, the keyboard side of the unit was extremely hot, especially towards the rear. I opened the door to find the microwave safe, plastic food cover, melting onto the turnable on the side facing the keyboard. I immediately unplugged the unit. I do not know if the fan that turns on during the heating process was on or not. I could only hear the vent fan, which will drown out the sound of other fan anyway. I heard a noise about a minute before the vent fan came on automatically. The noise was a bumping sound, like something in the microwave bumps when it is heating. I think the control panel shorted somewhere, the magnetron came on melting the food cover making it pop on the turntable. The microwave finally got so hot, the vent fan turned on due to heat or a short of its circuit, which is what caught my attention. I firmly believe had I not been at home, the microwave would have continued to run, catching the kitchen cabinets on fire, and eventually the the whole house. The microwave was 1 month and 28 days out of its 1-year warranty. There were no electrical surges or spikes experienced at the time.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Microwave/wall oven combination. Model 790
We purchased a Kenmore Elite Microwave/oven combination model 790 12/25/14 which was installed 1/12/15. The most recent problem on this unit is with the microwave. My son tried to warm up some food and the microwave (which had been working fine an hour before) began to hum loudly and glow orange inside. Within 2 seconds he hit the stop button and the microwave did turn off. When he opened the unit, smoke was coming out of top and there is a charred mark inside on the top (fire?) We are very worried. We have found numerous complaints the same and similar as ours regarding the Elite series appliances, and are concerned that this is just the beginning of issues with our purchase. Have called Sears for repair service, and they have scheduled a repair for next week.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Microhood, Model 721-86013010.
I purchased a new Kenmore kitchen appliance set in 2012 (refrigerator, dishwasher, dual fuel stove, and dishwasher). The design and handles were matching so it appeared like it was a set. The duel fuel gas slide in stove, Model [REDACTED], has had a couple of problems. 1) It is exactly like Model [REDACTED] , and has very sharp metal edges. Although we have not been injured, you have to be very careful cooking and cleaning on the product. 2) If the burner plates on the 85 BTU main burner are not seated properly, flames can shoot out in one direction in heights of 6”-8” causing a concentrated burst of flames to occur. My family has experience multiple burns and damage to our kitchen due to this.
Secondly, the microhood, Kenmore Elite 721-86013010, handle has cut my family with some pretty lengthy lacerations. The plastic metal the wraps around the handle separates and causes a sharp edge. My door assembly was replaced under warrantly once due to this problem but the second replacement door had the same malfunction. It is now wrapped in a commercial tape that is resistant to the heat so we no longer cut ourselves. Sears did reimburse us for $500 for the microhood however the product was never recalled. This product is still being sold and I strongly feel LG should replace the defective handle material to one that does not warp or split. When I phoned LG about the injury, they said the injuries were not severe enough to file a claim.
Your website would not allow me to upload correspondence and photos of the incidents.

My husband had the timer on our Kenmore OTR microwave on and suddenly the microwave actually turned on and caught fire. We luckily noticed and were able to put it out with a fire extinguisher that we have on hand. The upper ring was completely engulfed in flames and melted melted into onto the center plate. The fire did not stop when we hit stop ~ the reason for the fire extinguisher.

The product, in the report: over the hood microwave
(03/28/2015) The consumer stated that she was cooking popcorn in the microwave. After about 30 seconds the microwave started sparking inside. The consumer opened the door. There was smoke inside and a hole above the metal rack.
The consumer called Sears. A technician came out to look at the unit. The consumer was advised that the inside could be repainted. A tiny bottle of paint was sent to the consumer but she did not use it.
(05/12/2015) The consumer stated that the same thing happened a week ago. She stated that she was heating a little piece of meat skin on a paper towel. She laid the food on the rack per the instructions from the technician. She had the microwave set for 25 seconds. Almost immediately the groves that hold the rack caught on fire. When the consumer tried to open the door to the unit, it would not open. The consumer tried three times before the door would open. There was only smoke when she got the door open.
(05/13/2015) The consumer stated that Sears sent another technician out. She was advised that the piece that burned out could be replaced. The consumer did not want the microwave repaired.
The consumer was offered a replacement.

The product, in the report: Built-in Kenmore Microwave Hood Combination
We have owned a built-in Kenmore microwave hood combination for several years. Two weeks ago, while we were in other parts of the house, it started running on it’s own on full power and with the vent running on high speed. When we got to the Kitchen and realized what was happening we tried to to turn it off and could not!. We had to pull the plug from the outlet in the upper cabinet. The whole unit was very warm to the touch. I suppose if we had not been home it would likely have caused a fire.

Caller purchased her microwave around September 2013 and had no problems with it until March 2015 when her husband opened it to heat his coffee and it began running while the door was open. When he shut the door it stopped running, he set it at one minute, heated his coffee, retrieved it when the unit signaled completion and stopped but when he opened the door to pick his coffee up the microwave began running again. The same incident happened again the next morning with the caller. They tried to see whether it was gong to continue and each time they open the microwave door the microwave begins running. The caller is reporting this incident as an extreme safety hazard noting the heat and radiation emitted by a microwave and the potential harm it could cause to humans and property.
There are no known injuries to report at this time
The caller has not contacted the manufacturer but does intend to contact them

The product, in the report: counte-top microwave unit
Sporadically when microwave unit is turned on to heat food the interior light will come on but the neither magnetron nor the motor that turns the plate the food sits on will function. Numeric timer display counts down but there seems to be no power going to the magnetron or the table motor. I can unplug the unit for a period of time (varies from a few seconds to a few hours) and the unit appears to reset and heats foods appropriately. The malfunction is not dependent upon a cold start or the amount of time the unit’s run, it’s random but frequent. If the unit is running it will run for the set amount of time, malfunction only occurs when ‘start’ is pressed. This is the second unit of this model I’ve purchased within approximately two years to have this same problem. First unit, purchased from SEARS on-line worked for about a year before it started to have this problem. Second unit was purchased in a SEARS store (they say it was purchased in January of 2014 but SEARS label on the unit says it was manufactured in February of 2014) and worked until mid-January 2015 when it started to have the same problem. I have unplugged the unit permanently as I am worried that, if this is a timer problem, it might start spontaneously.

Kenmore Microwave, Model # 73169, Item number 790057176091; Date code 08, 2013 The microwave was purchased in November 2013 from Sears. The items was in use from December 2013 to Dec 2014. On 31 Dec 2014, the microwave function that allows for the baking of potatoes was utilized to bake 4 sweet potatoes individually. The potatoes were washed and then wrapped in plastic wrap. Three of the potatoes were baked without incident. The potatoes were placed individually in the microwave, the potato button was pressed and the display showed “SC-4”. The microwave baked each potato for a while and once the potato was within about 5 minutes of being done, the display showed the time remaining and counted down to zero. On the 4th potato, the potato button was pressed once the potato was placed in the microwave. The display on the microwave displayed “SC-4” as it had with other potatoes. After a while, the display never changed over to the count down timer and the potato burst into flames. Once the flame was noticed, the fire was extinguished and the microwave was removed from the residence.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Microwave Oven Stainless steel, over range, wall mounted unit Model number: 401.88523900 Serial number: 919MM02766
This evening after smelling something burning, I found the inside of my wall mounted, over the range microwave oven was on fire. It was not in use at the time and luckily I was home and able to unplug it and extinguish the fire without damage to anything other than the faulty oven itself. It seems something in the bottom of the interior ignited ALL BY ITSELF (which is the most frightful part of this incident) as this could have happened with no one home or at night when my wife, three children and I were asleep. The model number is: Sears Kenmore 401.88523900 The serial number is: 919MM02766 I have photos of the interior after the fire was extinguished, the smoke cleared and the unit cooled.
I am not sure what else to do as this was not purchased directly by us and installed in the home when we bought it. It does have a date of manufacture of May of 2009, so it seems around four years old or so...
I will hold on to it for a few weeks in case anyone wants to inspect it, but we need to replace this soon.
I really hope this was a unique instance and something like this doesn’t happen again to us or anyone else with a similar unit.

Kenmore microwave Model 405.73114310 Ser 14084001387 Safety Issue. After setup I heated one cup of coffee and everything okay, but the following happened on the next day. With oven off and door closed, when I pushed lower right white door open button in just slightly the oven comes on with nothing in it and the door still closed. None of the buttons, such as the Stop button, will turn it back off. The only way to turn it off is by pulling the plug or pushing the door open button all the way in. While I was trying to turn it off, it tripped the 20 amp circuit breaker in my electrical panel. If the door open button is pushed all the way in the door opens and everything else seems to function normally. I immediately returned unit to store as I do not want another Kenmore with such a potential electrical danger. I made a video of the issue with my cell phone. I can email that video to you if you would like. Thanks.
