The product, in the report: Microwave Oven
I own the GE Cafe Series microwave oven, Model CVM2072SM1SS, Serial 902192 B. In early December, 2012 this microwave began turning on by itself! The property where this unit is installed is occupied by tenants. They called about the problem. They literally came home and microwave was running. It also happened several evenings while the family was home watching TV and no one was near the microwave!
I’ve read about the class action lawsuit for certain GE microwave models via a March 2013 article in Consumer Reports magazine.
I’ve since replaced the dysfunctional unit with a [REDACTED]. Do I have any recourse with GE?

The product, in the report: GE microwave over-the-stove JVM1750DM1BB
GE microwave JVM1750DM1 turned on by itself. I heard the buttons being pressed on the microwave and thought that someone was in the kitchen. When I realized that no one was in the kitchen, I went in to see what was going on. The microwave had turned itself on and was running on the canned vegetable mode (which I have never used). I turned off the unit. Two days later, the microwave again started itself. I turned the unit off and called GE - after speaking with the customer service person, he put me through to the consumer relations department - after being on hold for 20 minutes, I hung up. A few days later, the microwave again started by itself. I again contacted GE - this time the customer service person informed me that I needed to place a service call. I told her that I thought it was a defect, not something that I should be charged for to have fixed. She said that there were no other reports or recalls on the microwave model number and again insisted that a technician needed to come to the house (at a charge of course). I voiced my objection at having to pay for someone to fix something that I feel is a defect and possible fire hazard - and that if they are not taking down reports, how would they know how many times this is happening - no one seems to be keeping track. I requested to be put through to the customer relations department. After being on hold for 34 minutes and 7 seconds, I gave up yet again. I unplugged the unit and have not used it since.

The product, in the report: GE Wall combo oven and microwave oven Model JTP86W0F6WW SER NO ZH6245Q
I have a GE combo wall oven and microwave ( # JTP860F6ww) in which the door latch on the microwave doesn’t work properly. It doesn’t release the door for opening the unit over the last few days. Normally opening the door will stop the microwave but since it has quit releasing reliability-- the unit will continue to run unless the touch panel is utilized to stop it. The the door can we wiggled to get it released. This requirement led to a potntial disaster when some food was smoking and the usual procedure was to hit the door release -- which I did to no avail. After a moment of panic and as the food smoked more I finally remembered to use the touch pad. I am positive that I averted a fire by less than a few seconds.
I see that earlier GE combo units were recalled for problems with the microwave door latch and it doesn’t look like they totally fixed the problem. I am a mechanical engineer and I find it incredible that this failure mode is allowed. If the parts for the door latch( required to make sure the unit does not run with the door open) are made so cheaply that they are the first part to fail then the cutoff should have still worked even if the door didn’t open-- since I am sure that many if not most consumers use the door opening to regularly stop the microwave.

At first they thought it was the magnatron tube that was bad but when they took it off the wall and looked inside they realized there were burn marks where the unit was arcing on the inside and scorching the inside of unit. This is the 2nd unit I have had that GE will have to replace for the same problem. The first model # was jjvm1850dm2bb. I bought new appliances which were delivered 11/30/07 but weren’t installed until 2/08 because my kitchen renovation hadn’t been completed. The microwave worked but had this loud motor sound on and off. It completely failed on the beginning of June 2009 and service came out on 6/12/09 and looked at it and said “internal damage, not repairable, no visible outside damage”. GE agreed to a replacement (same make and model) and it was delivered to my home and installed on 6/30/09. GE offered me a manufacturers warranty extension on the new unit from the period of 7/1/2009 thru 1/01/2011. On August 16, 2012 the micro stopped heating, I called for service and on 8/17/12 Ayres appl., came out and said they would order a magnatron tube they were sure that was the reason it wasn’t heating. Part came in and on 8/21/12 they removed micro from wall and took off cover and noticed burn marks inside back of micro and told me microwave is not repairable. They have called the extended warranty company to see how to handle this. I am scared to death of this microwave. I have read volumes of reports of GE microwaves catching fire when in use and when no one is using them. Please do something about this.

The product, in the report: General Electric Microwave and Oven Combo. The color is black.
I preheated our oven to 425 degrees. I opened the oven door and felt a blast of heat. I would almost describe it as a wind of extremely hot air. I immediately felt my face burning. The outside of my nose, the inside of my nose, my cheeks, eyelashes, and my lips were burned. It is painful! I was very scared and I thought my hair was going to catch fire but it did not. I immediately got ice and applied it to my lips while my daughter ran and got some burn spray and sprayed my face. We have felt an extreme amount of heat coming from the oven when we have opened our oven but it was never as bad as it was today.

The product, in the report: General Electric Profile microwave/convection oven. Model # PEB1590SM1SS. It was manufactured in October of 2009.
We own a General Electric Profile microwave/convection oven that we purchased new about two years ago. One afternoon when we were steaming broccoli in a glass bowl with a lid on it, fire started shooting out of the small panel on the right side (looking in) of the microwave. Luckily, my wife saw the flames and shut the microwave down. The fire went out, but the microwave would work no longer. It just sent sparks flying when tested a few minutes later. I reported this safety problem to GE but I am not satisfied with their response. I am concerned that if my wife had not seen the flames that the microwave could have caused a fire in our kitchen. The appliance technician that I arranged to fix the microwave found the problem to be a faulty magnetron, but rather than the usual crack in the magnetron, it showed black marks. It also burned the wave guide plate covering the magnetron. The plate also had to be replaced. I learned from watching the repair that GE used an LG magnetron in this microwave, not something I would have expected.

I have a GE Spacesaver, “over the range” microwave in my condo. While home earlier today, the microwave oven turned on completely by itself. The microwave would not turn off by pressing the “clear/off” button, or by opening the door. The only thing that shut it off was by shutting off the circuit breaker. Thankfully I was home at the time, otherwise who knows how long it would run, or damage it could have done in a fire. This is obviously a serious safety and fire hazard.

The product, in the report: Large, white, GE microwave
Although this microwave worked wonderfully, and was very easy to clean, it started to turn on by itself. It was as if someone had pushed the number one for a 1-minute express cook. Then when I would try and turn it off, the key-pad would flash a message that said there was something wrong with it and that it may to be serviced. I was looking up research on the model and maybe some troubleshooting advice and I saw that a lawsuit was in action from a law firm in Washington. I also found reports (in Florida I think) that say some of the microwaves actually started house fires. I believe they were the same model. The lawyers asked for us to send it on on their expense so that their professionals may take a look at it in regards to the lawsuit. We only had a one year warranty on it when we bought it and didn’t get an extended warranty on it so GE would not cover even manufacturing defects so we have to pay for a brand new microwave out of our own pockets. The microwave is only 2 years old.

The heating element will turn on randomly and won’t turn off unless power is turned off at the breaker or unit is unplugged. Unit heats up unrestricted to the point it could catch fire and burn down the RV or home it is installed in and take lives. It has done this multiple times and even after it’s Smart Board (circuit board) was replaced. Luckily we have been in the vicinity to turn off the power source or unplug it within minutes. Once it turned on while sitting next to gas station pumps and I was filling the RV with fuel while it was burning inside.

The product, in the report: GE microwave + Oven in one. About 4 feet by 3 feet. Black color.
The incident occurred on Friday 10/21/2011at 7:25p.m eastern time according to the Sparta Fire Department report.
The GE microwave oven caught on fire while not being in use. I told my wife to run out of the house to call 911 as I grabbed a fire extinguisher and put out the fire. Before we had a chance to call 911, the home’s alarm went off and the alarm company contacted the fire department and police. The entire house rapidly filled with black smoke debris and white powder from the fire extinguisher. Extensive damage was experienced to the cabinets, floors, carpets, walls, ceilings and furniture. In addition, we have been exposed to a reasonable amount of chemicals, which we can still feel today in our lungs.
The insurance company told us that we were very lucky as the fire could have rapidly spread to the entire house. They told us that it seemed like it began in the electrical panel, but they will take the microwave unit into their labs for further examination.
The initial estimated damages by the insurance company was put at $25,000-$35,000 and we have been told that the estimate will likely surpass that point due to the cleaning costs and other expenses. I was further told by the insurance company (Travelers) that an investigation is currently going on, as many consumers have gone to the unfortunate experience with GE microwave ovens.

The product, in the report: GE Over the Range Microwave Oven
In July 2010 I purchased a GE Over the Range Microwave Oven ,model #JVM1740SPISS and serial #GT927755B from Sears for our summer house in Seldovia, Alaska. After returning this May of 2011, I noticed that the light underneath the microwave that lights up the range top produced a extremely hot spot on the corresponding area inside the microwave oven to the extent that it caused the paint to bubble up in that spot and the area was almost too hot to touch ! This light has two settings - dim and bright and also has a nightlight setting. I called GE consumer division and was put in phone contact with a repairman in a nearby city. ( Our town is accessable by plane or boat only) After researching the problem , he concluded it was a product defect and unrepairable. I am concerned that this overheated spot could cause a burn and maybe even a fire ? GE is supposed to be looking into it and get back to me, but now I cannot use the light for fear of what danger, if any, this will cause. [REDACTED]

Consumer stated that on June 1, 2011 her microwave oven caught on by itself. The consumer stated that she was in her bedroom until she smelled a burning odor with a “sickly sweet smell” and came to find the microwave was on by itself. The consumer stated that her microwave was very hot to the touch to the point where she could not touch it at all. The product has a plastic door with a glass inset.
consumer turned off the main switch to power off the product as well as everything in her house including clocks, lights and lamps. The consumer called her neighbor, from Southern State Electric to make sure she didn’t have a wall fire and the fix the microwave if possible. The consumer and attempted to turn on the breaker and the product. However, the microwave would not turn on; concluded that the product was burned out and will not power on. Luckily, the product did not catch fire.
The microwave is charred on the inside but no physical damage on the outside that the consumer can see. There is no visible damage to the structure of her home. The consumer was initially going to call the fire department but decided not to. The consumer noticed other reports on the internet of this product catching fire. The consumer has not noticed any formal recall of this product. The consumer stated that the product is less than 3 years old and is upset because she could have had her house burn down or worse since it was only her and her dog in the home at the time of the incident.

The product, in the report: GE Microwave, black.
About a month ago, I put a microwavable bowl in microwave to heat up food. I placed a paper towel over it as I used to do frequently in my previous microwave. Within seconds, the towel caught fire. I unplugged microwave and took care of it. I assumed it was the paper towel or that you shouldn’t use paper towels in microwave and have not done it since. However, the past three times that I have made microwave popcorn, the bag ends up burning, the kernels fly all over the microwave and about a quarter of the bag pops into popcorn. I don’t understand why a microwavable bag of popcorn burns in the microwave and just to be clear, this has not been the same brand of popcorn so it has to be an issue with the microwave. I feel this is very dangerous and should be investigated.
