The product, in the report: General Electric Microwave Model# GCST10A1WSS
Using the air fry feature on my microwave caused the appliance to start smoking out all orifices and die. Would likely have caught fire if I didn’t stop it. This is my second of the same microwave after the same happened to the first. Fire hazard, needs to be recalled.

The product, in the report: GE Profile over range microhood with convection oven and microwave
Combination microwave/convection oven switches to microwave mode when we tried to reset the time for convection baking, causing the food to ignite and fill the house with smoke and scorch the overhead cabinets. I have a sore throat from the smoke that I inhaled while trying to open doors and windows and extinguish the fire. The microwave is not working after this event and I will need to replace it.
UPDATED ON 7/1/2025: [the user manual does not adequately describe how to reset the timer while in convection bake mode]

The appliance had not been used since the day before . The turn table part was not active only heating unit. The door was opened and the interior was extremely hot to the point untouchable. Once door opened appliance shut off .immediately unplugged . If I was not at home a fire would have resulted . This is the second time a GE unit did this the other a Space Saver turned on by itself. This unit 4 plus years old.

No one hurt Made Jan 8, 2025, sent to the company Jan 21, 2025, published by CPSC Feb 4, 2025
The product, in the report: GENERAL ELECTRIC Household Microwave Oven, Model JVM7195EF1ES, Serial MF245129B, Manufactured July 2015. Slate gray, over the range microwave oven.
GE over the range microwave, model JVM7195EF1ES. I was reheating lunch and put 1 minute on the timer. I walked out of the room for about 2 minutes. When I returned the microwave said “START 00:13” and was humming. The microwave carousel was off and the light was off, but the magnetron was still engaged heating the food. I pressed cancel and the clock started showing the time, but the magnetron was still humming. I opened the door and the magnetron stopped. I closed the door and the magnetron started again and the food started to sizzle.
The microwave control panel is not turned on (it just shows the time), there is no program set or running, the interior light is off, and the carousel is not turning. Even the fan that cools the magnetron is not running; only the magnetron is active. It can be confirmed that the magnetron is engaged by putting food in the microwave and closing the door. The magnetron, and only the magnetron, will turn on and heat the food. Pressing cancel has no effect. Opening the door turns off the magnetron, but it turns back on when you close the door.
This is a FIRE HAZARD as the microwave has failed in an “ON” state. I have unplugged the microwave and will replace it with a different manufacturer’s appliance as I don’t trust GE any longer (failed ice maker and water solenoid in the GE refrigerator, failed wash pump, control board, touchpad, door sensor, and drain pump in the GE dishwasher (all different years over 8 years), and now a stuck on magnetron in the GE microwave). I really don’t trust GE appliances and their reliability.

The product, in the report: Built in microwave oven
The product was installed in his new home.
11/1/2024: The consumer discovered a burn hole in his microwave’s left rear wall. The hole was approximately ½” – ¾” in diameter. The consumer was able to place his finger inside the hole.
11/4/2024: The consumer contacted the manufacturer and reported the problem to their representative. He was told that a service technician would have to come out and inspect the burn hole and someone would be out the next day.
11/5/2024: The consumer waited 4 hours, but the technician never showed up.
11/6/2024: The consumer had a new microwave installed by a different manufacturer.
11/6/2024: The consumer received a call from [REDACTED] (mfr’s technician), who said a technician would come out and there would be $120 service fee. The consumer was not initially told of the fee, so, he cancelled technician’s visit.
The consumer sent an email to one of the manufacturer’s VPs’. The VP told the consumer that since he cancelled the appointment, there was nothing they could do.
A rep. came out, who serviced his refrigerator. The consumer showed that rep. the pictures of the hole in his microwave. The technician told him that based on the pictures, this was a definite burn hole and the microwave should be replaced. The technician said that the surface above the burn hole was also starting to burn.
The consumer said he viewed other reports, online about this manufacturer’s microwaves, and they should be recalled due to the fire hazard.

The product, in the report: built in microwave General Electric Model #JNM1541SM5SS Serial #SZ 204426 L Manufactured September 2012 Color: black and stainless front Size: 16 1/4 (H) by 29 1/2 (W) by 15 1/4 (D)
I was using my microwave when something looked like it dropped from the “ceiling” of the microwave. I stopped the micro and a piece of melted plastic had fallen from the top of the microwave and it looked burned. Later that evening I used the micro again but I made sure I watched it cook because I was concerned with the way the top looked. Within seconds of turning it on the top of the mirco had a flame coming out of it. I immediately shut off the micro and unplugged it. (the microwave is a built in one above the stove) I did contact GE with my concerns and there reply was the following: They advised the product is designed to safety contain arcing or flames from this event in its metal enclosure. I quite frankly do not believe that is necessarily true.

The product, in the report: General Electric “Household Microwave Oven” JES1656SR2SS manufactured June 2017.
This is for product GE Microwave Model JES1656SR2SS. The microwave has worked properly for years but now after completing normally due to time expiration, the microwave will begin running again, including turning the plate holding the food, when the door is opened. This happens two or three times until opening the door appears to turn on the light as normal WITHOUT turning the microwave on.

The product, in the report: GE household microwave oven, stainless steel, 1.6 cu ft, Dimensions: 16 1/8 H x 29 7/8 W x 15 9/16 D
I was reheating something in our GE microwave when it blew a fuse while I was standing next to it creating a huge electrical shock that looked like a flash and because I was standing next to it, it shocked me severely and left two burn marks on my eye lid. The side of my face was hot for an hour afterwards and it hurt so bad I had to sleep it off. I was fine after that so I did not go to a doctor but thank goodness it wasn’t my teenager standing next to it when it happened!

Microwave overheated while not in use and nearly started a fire in my RV. It became extremely hot to the touch and I only noticed due to the acrid smell of the shelf starting to burn. I had to take it out of the shelf using towels because the surface was so hot, and unplugged it. I tested the outlet with a new microwave, and the outlet works normally.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Microwave (new) model PVM9005BL8TS. Installed over GE glass cooktop.
Halogen bulb used in surface light heats microwave interior to the extent that the empty oven glass turntable is too hot to handle with bare hands. I cannot put my hand on the plate. If a person unaware of this problem reached in the empty interior and picked up the glass plate to remove for cleaning, he/she would either be burned or would drop the plate and broken glass could cause extensive damage to person(s), cook top, and surroundings. GE Service personnel said “working as designed.”

The product, in the report: White GE over the range microwave oven with 1550 input watts and 1000 output watts
My GE above range microwave caught on fire while not in use. It was in need of repair for months and my apartment management never came to fix it. We went months not using it and it then caught on fire and spread to things on the stove. Fire department had to be called because my apartment never replaced my fire extinguisher as they are required to do by law. The sprinklers activated before the fire department arrived and my entire 2 story apartment was filled with black smoke within seconds. My daughter was stuck on the second floor and had to be rescued by a fireman.

The product, in the report: over the counter microwave - Stainless steel model: PSA9120SFSS November 2018 FCC ID: BEJX178NSB
I spilled my coffee while heating in a GE Microwave Model: PSA9120SF5SS November 2018 microwave on 9/24/22 at about 5 pm that was installed by Ryan home in 2019 when we purchased our new construction home. Later that night about 12:30 am on 9/25 I heard a popping noise and when me and my husband went down stairs to see what it was the microwave was sparking and smoking. We immediately cut the circuit breaker to the microwave and then unplugged it. We unscrewed the bottom of the microwave to see what had happened and the coffee had spilled into the bottom where the electrical wires were connecting the light but one of the wires had seperated from the others and was touching either the water or the metal. It was charred. This could had caught my house on fire. This seems to be a defect, why can water get into this area?? I have pictures of the wires and the microwave and I sent GE an email and photos. Their response was to give me a discount to purchase the microwave for $547. The microwave is completely fried and I have to get a new one. We also had to replace the control panel on the microwave in 2020, I believe because it died just after the warrranty ended.

The product, in the report: General Electric 1000W GE Profile household microwave oven, stainless steel, with air filters and lights on the bottom for mounting over a stove.
Our GE microwave spontaneously caught fire while it was not in use. We had last used it an hour earlier to heat up frozen blueberries. It was plugged in, but there was no food in it and nobody had touched it in the last hour. We saw black smoke billowing out of the top of the microwave door, and after opening the microwave door we saw flames through the grates in the microwave chamber in the back right corner, coming from area behind the keypad. We extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher and called the fire department, who confirmed that the fire had not spread beyond the microwave and unplugged it. The microwave is a General Electric model PVM9195SF3SS, serial ZF220232B, manufactured December 2015, made in Malaysia.

Microwave glass fell from door and outer oven glass detached and shattered I first purchased this home new in 2009 the General Electric appliances came with it. The appliances appear to have a common defect regarding the glass. The G E Microwave model JVM1540SM288 the oven glass just fell within 90 days of use. The product, in the report: Black general electric microwave oven.
I used my general electric household microwave oven to heat up food. After food completed cooking I took it out and closed the door. Once the door was closed the microwave made the sound like it was still running. I thought it was a fluke so I left it open for about five minutes and closed it again with the same result. After leaving the door open for an extended period of time the fuse blew. Flipped the fuse only to find out the microwave oven still sounds like it is cooking when the door is closed. Unplugged and contacted manufacturer!

The product, in the report: Over stove GE stainless steel microwave oven.
The GE microwave over the stove was installed in my new home when I purchased it about 6 years ago. It has never been used because it is too high for me. I am only 5 feet tall. I use a small countertop model. On November 14, 2018 in the evening I noticed flames through the glass door of the microwave. I opened the door and the flames were coming from the ceiling of the microwave, and the inside was burning bright red. I closed the door and watched to see if I needed to call the fire department. I am 81 years old and live alone. The fire went out on its own. I unplugged it the next day after it cooled. I called GE who was only willing to sell me a new microwave. They had nothing to say about a fire. I have since had an electrician out to check my electricity. He said the fire came from inside the microwave and that there were lawsuits pending from GE microwaves catching fire while not in use. There was nothing wrong with the electricity in my home.

The product, in the report: General Electric Over-the-Range Microwave Oven
Microwave oven failed in a dangerous way by generating microwaves continuously (demonstrated by being able to boil water in a glass), though possibly not at full power, even though by all indications it was “off”.
The interior lamp was not lit, the platter was not rotating, the fan was not running, and the digital display showed the clock rather than something related to cooking. It did make a humming noise, but not as loud as during normal operation (when the fan would be running). The user interface was not responsive. The appliance got hot enough before the problem was discovered that adhesive used to secure a large plastic vent piece on the front of the appliance melted; and the vent piece fell onto the floor.
“Rebooting” the appliance by unplugging the power chord then plugging it back in didn’t restore it to a normal state; as soon as it was plugged back in, it started cooking again without any proper indication, and the user interface was still unresponsive.
This condition seemed to start after the microwave was used to heat a cup of coffee, rather than spontaneously.

GE Microwave Model JVM1950SR1SS
Microwave was off and not in use for several hours.
Around 10PM I was woken up by a single popping noise coming from the Kitchen. I noticed the microwave was glowing and appeared to be on fire.
The microwave melted the glass plate along with the plastic stirring ring and enamel lining in the microwave prior to me being able to remove power and stop the fire.
GE did send out a tech the next day. The tech condemned the unit (since it was unrepairable). The tech DID NOT try to find the cause of the problem. He did not open up (besides the door), turn on, or investigate past the cosmetic condition of the unit.
If I were not home, I am sure my condo would have had a major fire in it. My product was an unsafe unit.
GE does not acknowledge any problems with these units and only offers a $25 gift card towards the purchase of a new unit.

The product, in the report: Combination microwave and conventional oven (stainless steel)
The consumer was heating food in the microwave for 2 minutes when she and her husband smelled an electrical burning odor, but we didn’t realize where it was coming from. When she attempted to open the microwave 2 minutes later, the door was stuck. It open approximately ½ inch. She discovered that part of the door was melted and the white paint that is used where the door meets the microwave the plastic on that part of the door meltedon it was burned near the door area. The consumers discontinued use of the microwave.
3/15/2018: She called GE the next day. The rep. told her that this was a safety issue and referred her to Customer Relations. She also said not to use the microwave, but we already knew not to use it. She spoke [REDACTED] (Rep. last name unknown). [REDACTED] said a tech would come out on 3/19/2018.
3/19/2018: A manufacturer’s technician came out and took pictures (he actually worked for GE).
A couple days later, a rep. called the consumer and offered to give her a unit for $2363.05.00. The consumer said this was a safety issue and it should be replaced the same unit she had.
Consumer asked for a supervisor and spoke to [REDACTED] (last name unknown). [REDACTED] asked if the consumer had pictures and she said yes, but also pointed out that the repair technician took pictures of the damaged microwave. [REDACTED] said that they were not submitted to the company. [REDACTED] asked if the consumer would provide pictures and she agreed.
She sent in pictures and [REDACTED] said that he would send them to the Engineering Department for review.
3/27/2018: [REDACTED] called the consumer back and said that their Engineering Department determined it was not a safety issue, because the burn was contained to the interior of the microwave. The consumer was given the same offer of a microwave for $2363.05
The consumer said she believes this is a safety issue and they should replace it with the same unit. It located in a built-in area of her kitchen. So we must get a unit that fits into the hole
The consumer paid approximately $2488.00 for her unit.
The consumer is concerned because it caused a fire and if it were used it could cause a larger fire.

The product, in the report: Small, white, GE microwave oven
I placed about two tbsps. of cold butter into a Corelle, microwave-safe ramekin bowl. I placed the uncovered bowl into my small, GE microwave. The microwave was old, but clean. I had previously noticed that a couple of the screws that were visible on the outside of the unit were rusted; otherwise, the oven appeared to be in good condition. I just wanted to soften the butter, so I set the timer for 15 seconds and turned it on. I immediately began to hear crackling noises, and I smelled smoke. When I turned around, I saw smoke and flames emerging from the right, inside wall of the oven. Because the unit was plugged into an outlet behind the oven, there was no safe way to unplug the oven. I reached over from the side and turned off the oven. Fortunately, it stopped. A hole was burned in the right (looking at the unit from the front) inside wall of the unit.

The product, in the report: General Electric Profile 1.7 cu ft convection over-the-range microwave oven, model #: PVM1790SR1SS
Fire department responded to the report of a fire in the kitchen. Homeowners reported that their microwave oven had turned itself on and blue flames and/or sparks were seen coming from the holes near the top right edge inside the oven. Homeowners unplugged the oven and threw baking soda into the microwave oven to extinguish the plastic “splash lid” left in the oven that had caught fire. The only contents in the oven at the time of the incident were a plastic splash lid and the microwave oven turntable. FD investigation did not find any fire extension to the house, though there was light smoke throughout the 2 story structure.
Owners had advised that they had been having recent problems with the microwave oven. Problems included the oven tuning off before cooking time was complete, and continuing to run even after the door was open. The oven had been serviced 4 days prior to this incident, with the service tech claiming the issue was due to a door sensor. A part was replaced at that time, “in less than 5 minutes” according to the homeowners.

Glass on Microwave Oven Door Shattered: This microwave was a replacement microwave oven provided (and installed) by GE during a service call to my residence approximately one to one and a half years ago. The first microwave oven (was less than a year old) and was malfunctioning but under warranty and was replaced. The replacement oven was manufactured in December of 2014.
On January 23, 2017 my wife went to use the microwave to reheat food. This was in the morning and the microwave had not been used since the following night. She proceeded to open the door of the empty microwave when the glass on the front door shattered into tiny little pieces. Some of this glass exploded outward and into the kitchen. The microwave was an above the stove style mounted oven and therefore right about eye level. Little shards of glass went everywhere including into my wife’s face, neck and chest area. She quickly flushed her eyes with water and we subsequently went to an eye specialist that morning for an eye exam as a precaution. Please note that when I cleaned up the glass I found pieces approximately 15 feet away from the microwave.

Product: GE Over-the-range 1.6 cu. ft. microwave oven Model: JVM3160RFSS Serial: GD282802A Manufactured: April 2014. Assembled in China.
Incident: This microwave oven was installed over a gas cooking range. It operated normally for 18 months. On November 2, 2016, while heating food, the glass on the door spontaneously shattered. The door was not subjected to mechanical impact.
Design issue: When a microwave oven is used above a cooking range, the range burners cause cyclical heating of the microwave door. Possibly the cycles of heating and cooling over time weaken the heat-tempered door glass, resulting in eventual failure by spontaneous shattering.
On this model, the input vents of the microwave exhaust fan are located near the back. This location makes them less effective for venting hot air. This is a product design concern that merits careful investigation.

The product, in the report: built-in microwave oven
The microwave turns on by itself and runs continuously. The problem has happened numerous times. The consumer plugs the microwave into the outlet when she wants to use it and unplugs it when she is finished.
The problem started back in 2010. However, the consumer has contacted the firm 3 times so far. The microwave turned on, while the tech. was at her home and he relayed this information to their technical department. The problem has been confirmed to be caused by a failure in the microwave’s smart board (control system).
The smart board has been replaced twice by the mfr. The first time she reported the problem, the mfr’s technician indicated that the wiring in the microwave was wrong. The technician ended up rewiring the microwave and replacing the smart board. This was done back in early 2010.
2013: The same problem started happening and a mfr’s technician came out and replaced the smart board again.
2014 & 2015, The same problem started happening intermittently, but it eventually corrected itself. The consumer notified the mfr., but since the problem stopped, it was concluded that a technician did not need to come out.
2016: The same problem started again and the consumer contacted the mfr. However, this time, their rep. told her that the microwave is beyond the warranty period. The mfr. has informed the consumer that the microwave can be fixed, but she would have to pay for it to be repaired. The consumer is not willing to cover the cost, because of the safety hazard. The mfr. offered her $50 towards the purchase of another product, but she does not want another microwave by this mfr.
The consumer believes that this could cause a fire if she was not home when this happened.

we were using our GE oven to cook our Ham on Easter Sunday 2016 when it had finished we turned the oven off and were all making our plates when all of a sudden I noticed our Microwave above the oven it’s time was powered off which was not normal. I went over and opened the door and it was so HOT inside the Microwave like someone had used it for 20 mins . NO ONE had used it as we had just cooked our ham and made everything else on the stove. I left the door open to cool it off . I had my husband run and shut the power off to them both. I called the company we rent from. it has taken them 2 weeks and because there is NO RECALL on them and even though it was arching and smoking they tell me it is safe to use and there is NOTHING wrong with them even though it shut off by itself and got boiling hot inside without using it. The product, in the report: GE Over-the-Range Profile Microwave Oven Spacemaker XL Sensor Model No. JVM 1350BW002 Serial No. GS 944992S Black
GE Over-the-Range Profile Microwave Oven (Model # JVM1350BW002; Serial # GS944992S) caught fire behind the control panel. Flames shot out from where the door claps grab. We were able to extinguish with a fire extinguisher which if it were not available. we would have suffered serious damage. Local fire department was called and check out walls behind the oven for damage. Not found. However, we did suffer smoke damage and white powder from fire extinguisher is throughout house.
GE was called and the technician diagnosed the cause as a fire in the magatron. GE Customer Relations only offered a discount coupon to purchase a new GE appliance. They were not moved that their product could have destroyed our house and perhaps injury. This incident certainly substantiates the need for a recall investigation.

The product, in the report: GE Microwave oven
I had heated a cup of coffee in the microwave. When I got it out and shut the door, the microwave restarted even though there was no count-down time showing on the timer. I opened the door, pushed the clear/off button and shut the door. The microwave did not restart. About 20 minutes later, the microwave started up again (the light came on along with the fan noise). I opened the door and it turned off and left the door open for the rest of the day. The next morning I contacted GE customer support via chat and later by e-mail and reported the problem. I was referred to their service department. I believe this is a serious safety issue. If the microwave came on during the night instead of when I was sitting there, the consequences could have been severe.

The product, in the report: Microwave - Oven combination. (built in) produced by General Electric and sold through Sears. Model No. JKP90SP488 Ser. No. HA610893Q. Microwave portion failed
1. The product had been used earlier in the evening to heat food. 2. About 1 hour later, as I was sitting at the kitchen table the microwave started on its own. No one near it. I heard it turn on due to a loud buzzing sound and went to investigate. The LED read-out was blank and the STOP button did not stop the operation. 3. I opened the door and it stopped running, closed the door and it started up again. 4. I attempted to program it by entering the timer, but it flasher, “Set the clock” which I attempted, but it would not take the entry. 5. I went to the basement and turned off the power (220 V double breaker for the oven and microwave) and waited for about 1 minute. Thinking the electronics would reset. Turned the breaker back on and came upstairs. It was running again with the LED screen blank. 6. Opened the door to stop the unit, returned to the basement and turned off the power. 7. Called Sears for service. Due Tuesday 8. Checked the recall list and find that earlier models (older than my unit) had been on recall for this same problem, but not mine. My concern is that if I had not been sitting there in the same room, it might have caused a fire, as it is a built-in unit in wood cabinets.

The product, in the report: General Electric Profile Advantium 120, over the stove/range model Microwave/Oven, Model #SCA1000DWW03, Purchased in 2004. This item is used mainly when cooking extra large meals and need an extra oven. Rarely use the Microwave option as I have a counter top microwave and regular gas wall oven. Use this item about 10 to 15 times in a year. Very Limited Usage
This product is an over the range Microwave/regular baking oven and a speed cooking oven.
Friday eve, the vent cover for the mounting and fan broke off, (held by only 2 small screws that go through small plastic extension pieces of the vent. Apparently the small plastic holes broke loose and released the entire vent. Vent is 36” length x 3” depth x 3” wide.
Vent crashed down on a sauce pan full of liquid, which hit the handle and flipped pan up and over my stove top, floor, cabinets creating a large mess. WORST OF THIS WAS, I WAS SCALDED BY A GOOD AMOUNT OF THE JUICE HITTING MY LEG AND STOMACH AREA. This could have been a lot worse if a small child or my small dog would have been near.

The product, in the report: Over The Counter Microwave GE OTR Built-In Microwave
The consumer stated that her microwave does not have a reflector over the surface light. The consumer stated that none of the JVM series microwaves came with reflectors.
The consumer stated that the surface light (on the bottom of the microwave) gets overheated and starts smoking. The consumer stated that the paint on the bottom panel is peeling off.
The consumer contacted Gold Star Appliance regarding the issue. They informed her to contact GE. When the consumer contacted GE, they scheduled an appointment with A&E Factory Service (Dallas, TX) for an inspection.
The consumer had a technician, [REDACTED], come out from A&E Factory Service on 9/11/15. The technician examined the surface light and mentioned that there was no reflector. The technician put a temperature gauge on the inside of the microwave. The inside of the microwave was at 180F within 5 minutes of having the surface light on. The microwave was not running. The technician contacted GE Tech Support. The technician informed GE that he has been servicing microwaves for 39 years and he has never seen a microwave without a reflector. He informed GE of the overheating issue.
GE asked the technician to see if he can order a reflector and install it. The technician stated that he could not find a reflector that was made for the JVM series microwave. The technician was informed by GE Tech Support to print out a receipt for the consumer and assign a case number. The consumer would be contacted by GE in 48 hours.
The consumer was contacted by GE on 9/16/15. The consumer missed the call at that time so she returned it later on in the day. The consumer spoke to [REDACTED], Supervisor [REDACTED], [REDACTED] and [REDACTED].
The supervisor confirmed with GE Engineers that there were no reflectors made for surface light for the JVM Series.
The consumer was informed that she can get a replacement JVM series microwave at no cost. The consumer did not want another JVM series microwave since all of them do not have the reflectors. She believes that she would run into the same issue again. The consumer asked if she could get a different series microwave as a replacement. The consumer was informed that in order to upgrade to a different series, she will have to pay $300 additional.
The consumer also spoke to [REDACTED] ([REDACTED]) and was informed the same thing. He reduced the cost of upgrade to $200 from $300.
The consumer has a warranty on the unit.

07/10/2015 - The consumer had not used her microwave in approximately nine hours. She was approximately ten feet away from the unit when all of a sudden she heard it go off. The consumer came over the microwave and pressed STOP. The microwave turned off. The consumer states that a few minutes later, the microwave self-started again. The consumer went over and pressed STOP and it turned off. This happened a total of approximately five times. The consumer eventually unplugged the microwave from the wall socket. She states that the microwave always turned on the EXPRESS 1-Minute cycle.
07/11/2015 - The consumer plugged in her microwave. She put some food in it to heat and it worked accordingly. A few minutes later, the microwave self-started again on the same cycle as the day before. The consumer pressed STOP and it turned off. This happened once more before the consumer unplugged the microwave from its wall socket again.
07/13/2015 - The consumer contacted the manufacturer and explained what had been happening with her microwave. The representative she spoke to informed her that the unit is no longer under warranty and so they cannot provide any assistance to her. Because it was a safety concern, they said they could send a Service Technician to inspect the unit and she would get a discount. They also gave her the option of receiving a discount towards the purchase of a new microwave from them. For the price of $246.00, which is almost the cost of the unit.
7/20/15 After several more attempts to use the microwave, it always self starts, so the consumers leave it unplugged.
The consumer does not know if she will choose any of the offered options.
The consumer has no injuries nor previous incidents to report. The consumer believes this product poses a safety hazard.

The product, in the report: GE microwave oven, over-the-range style with integrated vent fan, white color
Microwave oven repeatedly turned itself on without any user interaction. This happened about every 3 minutes. The display showed “Express” and the oven appeared to be fully activated (turntable spinning, light on, motor running, etc). I kept turning off the oven using the keypad.
When I opened the door to prevent the problem from occurring, the oven appeared to try starting by itself again. After a few attempts, the oven began to beep and a message showing “keypad needs service” showed on the display

The product, in the report: Microwave Combo Wall Oven
05/15/2010 (Approximate) - The consumer was using her microwave unit when all of a sudden it stopped working after she heard a pop noise. The circuit breaker supplying power to the unit was damaged and the consumer had to call an Electrician to come and replace said circuit breaker as all the wires were burnt.
The consumer contacted the manufacturer and they sent a Service Technician. The Service Technician informed the consumer that he could not tell what part needed to be fixed as the product’s information (model, serial, etc.) had been erased.
The consumer contacted the manufacturer and informed her that her unit was recalled. The manufacturer informed the consumer that without product information, they could not repair the unit.
The consumer contacted another Service Technician and when he inspected the unit, he informed the consumer that her unit was included in a recall. The consumer had to pay out of pocket to fix the unit.
04/24/2015 - The consumer’s daughter informed the consumer that she was using the microwave and it was making more noise than usual.
04/29/2015 - The consumer’s daughter went to use the microwave to heat up some food and set it to two minutes. Her daughter complained that the microwave was making more noise and sparking than usual still and when the unit stopped, the consumer indicates her daughter complained as well that the food did not heat.
05/01/2015 - The consumer contacted the manufacturer and explained everything that has been happening with the unit. The representative informed the consumer that she saw the notes of the previous times the consumer had called. The consumer was informed they would send a Service Technician but that without the serial number, they could not do anything.
The consumer indicates that there are burn marks inside the microwave as well as above the microwave’s casing on the cabinet. The consumer’s husband, a Veteran, is on dialysis due to injuries incurred while at war and so a lot of his food has to be heated hence not having a working microwave is becoming a burden for the consumer.
The consumer does not feel safe using the unit so she has since then stopped using it. The consumer believes this product poses a safety hazard.
The consumer added, on May 5, 2015, GE Consumer Relations sent a GE repair person to look at her oven combo. The consumer noted the repair person said she needed a part which they were charged first $580.00, then he [technician] discounted it to $269.68. The consumer also noted the technician put the part in and two days later the microwave did the same thing again, and it is not working.
The consumer also added she enclosed a copy of receipt of service.

First aid Made Apr 2, 2015, sent to the company Apr 10, 2015, published by CPSC Apr 24, 2015
The product, in the report: microwave oven with a turntable and with button switches to turn the turntable off / on
As I reported in report number 20150324-1EA09-2147434280 on 3/24/2015, my GE microwave set paper towel / plate on fire when operated with the turn table off as the item being microwaved was too large for it to rotate. Also, when I placed two small plates in this microwave to warm them & turned the turn table off as they were too large to rotate & removed the plate nearest the “microwave beam” and handed it to my wife, it blistered her hand such that she dropped the plate and had to be treated for the minor burn injury. I contacted GE & they eventually sent a technician to check my microwave. He stated that it “worked as designed”. After further follow up with GE, they offered to have a second technician check the microwave. He called me today & stated that, per GE’s instructions, he would charge me for the “service call” if he found that the microwave worked as designed. After he told me how he was going to test the microwave, which was rudimentary at best, I declined to have him make the service call. One technician stated that he is seeing more fires in microwaves, now that more recycled material is being used in paper products, the other indicated that the design of the microwave oven is such that fires can occur and that hot spots in dishes routinely occur. GE states that this microwave works as designed & it causes fires & causes bodily harm to users, with no warnings included in the associated literature. As such, this microwave has a MAJOR DESIGN FLAW THAT IS HAZARDOUS TO USERS and should be recalled completely. This type microwave should not be allowed to be sold in the USA without appropriate design changes to eliminate the current hazard or should at least REQUIRE HAZARD WARNINGS BE PLACED PROMINENTLY ON THE APPLIANCE AND IN THE USER LITERATURE to not use the buttons to turn the turntable off except under very limited operating conditions!!!!!!.

We have heard the microwave go off at various times of the night. We have found items in the microwave scortched and smoking, setting off the smoke detector nearby. We have unplugged the unit to stop this action. We plug in only to use, then unplug. The item is GE Microwave Model: JVM1540DP1WW Serial Number: RT 956926B Manufactured: August, 2010

The product, in the report: Over-The-Stove Microwave Oven
02/15/2015 (Approximate) - The consumer’s wife opened the microwave door and all of a sudden, the turntable started spinning. The consumer’s wife and her husband tried closing the microwave door several times and pressing the OFF button however, whenever they opened the microwave door, it would start again. The couple tried unplugging and plugging back the unit but nothing worked: the microwave would turn itself on when it was opened and turn off when its door was closed.
The consumer’s wife stated that if they programmed the unit, it works fine but when the door is opened, it starts again so they do not want to use it because of this same reason.
The consumer’s wife indicates that the only way the microwave will function properly is if it is unplugged, the microwave door is opened, the food container is inserted, the microwave door is shut, the microwave is plugged back in, and then started. You then have to stop the microwave, unplug it, open its door, take your food out, and then plug it back in. The consumer’s wife states that although this works, they only tried it a few times but that they are not using the microwave because they do not feel safe using it.
The couple tried this for the first three or four days. The consumer’s wife indicates that they use their unit approximately three to four times on a daily basis.
02/27/2015 - The consumer contacted the manufacturer. After explaining his microwave situation to a representative, the representative informed the consumer that they had not heard of this before. The consumer was informed that they do not service his area but that they could refer them to a couple of service companies so they can inspect his unit. The consumer refused this information. The consumer asked to speak to somebody else about technical issues but he was informed that they do not give any technical information to consumers.
The consumer contacted a service company, Judd & Black, but was informed that they could not assist him as they do not service microwaves by General Electric. The consumer was informed that the issue he is having with his unit is most likely due to the microwave door. The consumer was advised that it would be better to just buy a new microwave since the cost to fix it would be high.
The consumer went online to see if other people had been having issues with microwaves and found out that they have, though he is not aware if with his same model. The consumer plans on replacing his unit for a newer one.
The consumer has no other incidents or any injuries to report. The consumer believes this product poses a safety hazard.

The product, in the report: GE, over-the-stove, microwave oven. The model number is JVM1540DM2BB. It was manufactured January 2008.
My mother’s microwave oven (GE model# JVM1540DM2BB, manufactured Jan 2008) caught fire while it was being used. The oven was set to high and had been cooking a veggie burger for about five seconds when we heard a loud crackling and popping sound. We stopped the microwave by opening the door and made sure there was nothing inside the microwave that shouldn’t be (metal or unknown objects). Once it was clear that only the veggie burger was inside the oven we restarted the oven. Right after (only a second or two) I started cooking again I noticed a flame inside the microwave. The flame was not in the cooking cavity of the oven but rather it was inside the plastic housing above the control panel. The flame was visible through some slats at the top of the oven. To be clear, the food being cooked did not catch fire; rather the microwave itself caught fire within the housing of the appliance. After spraying a good deal of water into the vent/slats at the top of the oven, the flames were extinguished.

Microwave Oven Only Runs with Door Open
DETAILED PROBLEM STATEMENT: When time is entered and Start button is pressed, the timer counted but no sound or lights were seen. When the door was opened, the inside bulb lit, platter rotated, and magnetron began operating. The door was quickly closed and the microwave stopped operating, but timer continued to count down.
DEVICE: General Electric Microwave Oven Model JES1451DN1WW Serial # 902300 B Manufacturer Date Feb 2009
An identical incident occured on December 15, 2011, involving a GE microwave oven model #JCSS1139BL01 (serial number not recorded).
In both cases the person was able to shut the door quickly enough to avoid receiving a burn. (Door was only open partway before RF energy was felt.)
Both microwave ovens were undamaged; door made proper contact with interlock switch and switch was functional. It is suspected that these microwave ovens lack a “hard” interlock; whenever the door is opened or closed, a software interrupt is triggered with “toggles” the state of the relay controlling the fan, platter, and magnetron tube.

The consumer would like to file a report on her unit, which she feels poses a fire hazard.
On 11/23/14 the consumer was in the kitchen washing dishes when she noticed that the unit turned on spontaneously. The unit began to run as if it was set to heat up an item. The consumer did not notice what was displayed on the control panel. The consumer was shocked that the unit turned on by itself and about 30 - 40 seconds later she pressed the clear button on the unit. The unit turned off but after 1 minute the unit began to beep very loud. The consumer noticed the control panel displayed an error about the circuit board but she does not remember what exactly was on the control panel. The consumer pressed the clear button to stop the beeping noise. The unit would stop beeping for about 1 minute and then begin beeping. The consumer would press the clear button again and this repeated 3 times.
The consumer unplugged the unit and waited for one minute. Then the consumer would plug the unit back in and the unit would immediately begin beeping. This repeated for about 3 times. The consumer has unplugged the unit and it has remained unplugged.
The consumer uses the unit at least once a day.
The consumer has not contacted the firm but plans to after filing this report.

That is, the time was not displaying as it normally does. A few minutes later, while my mother, my uncle, and I were in the kitchen, the microwave turns on again. This time, the three of us saw the microwave turn on by itself. We quickly unplugged it for fear of a safety hazard. The product, in the report: GE Microwave Oven: JVM1540SN1SS.
In a 3 day span, our GE Microwave Oven, model #JVM1540SN1SS, purchased in 2009, turned on by itself without any touch. We tried unplugging and plugging back in the microwave and it worked fine for around 45 minutes. At that time, it set itself and turned on for 1 minute cooking on high. We were in the other room and heard it come on. We hit cancel on the keypad, left it was nothing showing on the keypad and it turned itself back on within 15 minutes, again for 1 minute. AFter that we unplugged the microwave and left it unplugged unless cooking with it.
Contacted GE who stated it sounded like a faulty keypad and wants to charge me $300.00 to fix. I have video of it starting on its own 3 times in 15 seconds after I have manually turned it off using the keypad.

We have multiple residents in our property that have experienced fires within their General Electric over the range microwave. All fires have been contained within the microwave itself and have not caused serious injury or property damage. All units listed below failed during the 1 year warranty period and have been replaced by General Electric.
We are very concerned because we have additional over the range microwaves in the building that could potentially catch fire and cause serious injury to our residents or damage to our property. We have installed over the last year sixty-six (66) of model #JVM1540.

Around noon (March 2014), the consumer was in the living room when she heard a loud pop. The consumer went to the kitchen and she heard the sound of glass shattering. The microwave’s tempered glass had pop out from the frame. Some glass pieces were all over the kitchen floor. Most of the tempered glass did not fall off the microwave frame but it is completely shattered. The consumer turned off the circuit breaker to the microwave. * Please note that no one had used the microwave prior to both incidents!

The consumer is not comfortable with keeping this microwave since the same incident happened back in February 2011. The *(Consumer’s home warranty people) replaced the glass in 2011.
The consumer called the mfr. after the second incident and they said that they will send the door but it is on back order until September 2014. The consumer will have to pay for the labor. Also, they will not replace the microwave but they offered to give the consumer a small discount on a new microwave. * This is a deficit & safety issue. The glass can get into someone’s eye, ear, neck hair for potential for great damage. Product Manufacturer’s Name: General Electric Date of manufacture or date code: September 2000 Product Model Number: JVM141OBC001 When did you purchase this product? n/a Where did you purchase this product? n/a Type of product: Over the range microwave Product Description: Please be advised we were inside our home and noticed a very strong smell of something burning inside our home. It was coming from the microwave. The microwave was NOT on. When I opened the door, the turntable inside was rotating by itself and making a grinding noise. Apparently the motor went bad. But this did not cause the turntable to stop rotating. All the digital lights on the front of the unit were OFF. The top of the interior portion of the microwave was extremely hot to the touch and the burning smell was very strong. I also checked the interior bottom portion of the cabinet it was attached to and it was also hot. If we were not home, the heat could have easily caused ignition of the surrounding materials and subsequently a kitchen fire. I am very concerned that the unit did not have a safety feature that would have turned it off due to the extreme overheating. I am a career firefighter and have responded to many kitchen fires and situations like these are what causes these fires as you are well aware off. Just reporting it, in my opinion, even though the item is 14 years old, it should be recalled. I am not the original owner of this home, so I do not know where the previous owners purchased this product. Thank you...[REDACTED]

No one hurt Made Oct 28, 2013, sent to the company Nov 5, 2013, published by CPSC Nov 20, 2013
The product, in the report: GE Spacemaker Microwave Oven Model JVM1540-DN1WW white, over the cook top microwave oven
This is in regard to a General Electric Spacemaker Microwave Oven Model JVM1540-DN1WW purchased and installed three years and nine months ago from Lowe’s Home Improvement Center In Turlock, California.
On Oct. 20 afternoon my wife and I were seated at our kitchen table when the above-named appliance spontaneously started running. Neither of us had used the microwave that day and were surprised by the activation. I got up to inspect the unit to see what was going on and it was running and the display listed a cycle we never use. I selected the “clear/off” button and the machine ceased operation.
Still surprised and bewildered by this, I was looking at but not touching the control panel when it spontaneously activated again. I felt the unit and the microwave generator was definitely operating because the glass was getting hot. Again I hit “clear/off” and the machine again ceased operation. Each time within a minute or two it would spontaneously start up again.
Thinking this might be a “computer” type glitch in the unit’s memory board, I unplugged the unit and let it sit for several minutes, perhaps 20 to 30 minutes, to see if it would reset itself. Then I re-plugged the unit and within a short time it again spontaneously started up. Fearing a fire hazard, I then unplugged it.
The next day, I called GE’s product support hotline, but they offered little information except they tried to schedule a repair visit. They also tried to indicate the problem was either, not a problem at all (“maybe you had something hot on the cook top so the unit’s fan was automatically engaged, which is normal”) or that we had done something purposeful to cause the problem.
Apparently what GE did not count on is the fact that I’m a retired journalist and my wife is a retired reference librarian. We had already done our due-dilligent research and had learned that several brands of microwave of experienced similar spontaneous activations, GE units being one of the main brands at issue.
I could not find our particular model among those known to malfunction but it certainly has done so repeatedly. I feel very fortunately that this spontaneous activation didn’t happen when we were away, or in the middle of the night. Outcomes under those circumstances might have been dire.
My wife and I have already ordered a new (not GE) unit and it will be installed and the defective one hauled away this week. However, I feel strongly that is brand and model should be added to your list of those that have activated spontaneously.
