No incident, no one hurt Made Jul 21, 2026, sent to the company Jul 24, 2026, published by CPSC Aug 7, 2026
The product, in the report: Cuisinart Toaster Oven, made in Maylaysia. The unit measures 20”w X 9”h X 15”d and is Silver with a glass and plastic spring hinged door. It was purchased at SAMS Club Chillicothe, Ohio within the past 6-12 months. The glass fell off of the door, dropped 4’ to the concrete floor next to my 8 year old son and I. The glass did not shatter (while impressive) but I suspect the impact to that glass now makes it unusable. I am still looking up the exact purchase date. The product has been used apx 30 times but never above 400 degrees F and most often is used as a toaster. Upon closer inspection the plastic (or rubber ??) tabs broke and the seal failed from the glass mounting gasket. Replacing the door may easily resolve this matter but the seal and tabs would need to be much more secure. I have contacted customer service at Cuisinart who assigned the ticket number [REDACTED]
We purchased a Quisantart TOA-105 less than 1 year ago at SAMS Club in Chillicothe, Ohio. The glass in the door fell out, dropped 4 feet and hit the concrete floor next to my 8 year old son. The glass did not break and the door is still intact. The adhesive merely let go of the door frame. I do not trust that the glass is not compromised because of the fall and striking the concrete floor. I could not find this product on the manufacturers website and was never notified of any recalls. This could have ended much worse.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart 14 in 1 toaster oven/air fryer
Product: Cuisinart 14 in one air fryer, model TOA-105 Just after cooking, the glass cover of the door fell off of its frame. It appeared to delaminate. My husband caught the door to prevent it from shattering, and it burned his hands. It is no longer usable and we used it for only about 6 months.

No one hurt Made May 20, 2026, sent to the company May 22, 2026, published by CPSC Jun 8, 2026
The product, in the report: Cuisinart TOB-260N1NAS Chef’s Convection Toaster Oven
Under normal everyday use, the power cord and plug on this unit became extremely hot and began melting, producing a strong electrical burning smell. My wife and I discovered this as a fire hazard in our kitchen. No injury or property damage occurred, but the risk was clear. Photos of the damaged cord and plug were submitted to Cuisinart’s consumer service team. Cuisinart declined to replace the unit citing the warranty period.
(07/17/2026) Following my initial report, Cuisinart’s claims team contacted me and requested I send the unit in for engineering evaluation, which I did in good faith. I also completed their questionnaire thoroughly, disclosing all relevant details upfront. Cuisinart’s engineering team subsequently issued findings that contradicted my submitted documentation. They attributed the defect to the unit being placed too close to a wall, a conclusion that is physically inconsistent with the actual damage, which was isolated to the plug at the far end of the cord. My claim was denied a second time. I formally disputed their findings in writing. Cuisinart responded with a form letter that addressed none of my specific points and blamed me for the issue. Cuisinart requested I send the unit to them for evaluation using a prepaid label they provided. After completing their evaluation and issuing findings that I formally disputed, they have stopped responding entirely. Cuisinart is now retaining my personal property without authorization. Despite multiple formal written demands for its return at their expense, I have received no response whatsoever. It is worth noting that Cuisinart solicited the physical evidence of the safety malfunction, conducted a disputed evaluation, and then went silent while remaining in possession of that evidence. The unit, which documented the fire hazard defect I originally reported, is now in their hands with no path to independent verification of their findings. A formal complaint has also been filed with the California Attorney General’s office. I am providing this update to ensure the complete record of Cuisinart’s handling of this safety concern is documented

No one hurt Made May 15, 2026, sent to the company Jun 4, 2026, published by CPSC Jun 18, 2026
The product, in the report: The Cuisinart TOA-70 / CTOA-122NAS is a countertop air fryer toaster oven designed for home kitchen use. The unit combines air frying, toasting, baking, and broiling functions in a single appliance and is marketed for everyday family cooking. The unit’s serial number is DC 3925 BB, located on the bottom of the appliance.
On April 28,2026, I was using my Cuisinart TOA-70 Air Fryer Toaster Oven to make morning toast a routine, low-temperature use of the appliance. While the unit was in operation, the rubber door gasket at the interior base of the oven cavity caught fire. I extinguished the fire using a fire extinguisher I had on hand in my kitchen. No one was physically injured. However, my children were seated at the kitchen table immediately adjacent to the unit at the time of the fire. The only reason this did not result in injuries is because I was present, acted quickly, and happened to have a fire extinguisher within reach. Under any other ordinary circumstance had I stepped out of the room, had the fire extinguisher not been there, had my children been alone this could have been a very different outcome. This is not an isolated manufacturing defect. Independent consumer reports spanning 2022 through 2026 document the same rubber gasket failure across multiple TOA-70 units. A prior CPSC incident report ([REDACTED]) documents an identical gasket failure that also resulted in a fire inside the oven cavity. Newly purchased units as recently as February 2026 exhibit the same defect, indicating no corrective action has been taken by the manufacturer. The unit was purchased on March 25, 2026 from Target. [REDACTED]. Serial #DC 3925 BB. The unit has been returned to Target.

The product, in the report: cuisinart air fryer toaster oven 7-in-1 1800w stainless steel ctoa-122nas
I have been using the cuisinart air fryer toaster oven 7-in-1 1800w stainless steel ctoa-122nas for about 2 years now. It has always cooked extremely hot so I typically set the temp 75 degrees below the instructions. I have it on my counter plugged into a regular outlet with open space all around it. Last night, I was cooking a mini pizza on the top rack for 8 minutes at 350 degrees. The air fryer had been recently cleaned as well. I noticed some smoke coming out of it at the 5 minute mark and turned it off. I then saw the flames inside coming from both bottom heating elements. I quickly unplugged it but the flames did not stop so I had to open the door and use a fire extinguisher to get it under control. I accidentally breathed in some of the extinguisher powder and have minor breathing issues/irritation from it. I waited for the air fryer to cool down and threw it away. It was very scary .

No one hurt Made Oct 23, 2025, sent to the company Nov 6, 2025, published by CPSC Nov 26, 2025
The product, in the report: Cuisinart Digital Air Fryer CTOA-130PC3. I no longer have the unit as Conair required me to send it back to them. It was silver in color and was a counter top model.
I am writing to caution others about the Cuisinart Digital Air Fryer CTOA-130PC3. This is a combination toaster oven and air fryer. I purchased it from Costco and it operated great until it almost burned down my kitchen. I hadn’t used it for a couple of days but noticed a burning smell coming from it when I walked by it as I was leaving the house for the day. I unplugged it and found the plug melted on one side and the outlet burned where it was plugged in. I should note that it does not have a grounded plug and the cord is very light duty - less than either my coffee pot or tea kettle. I reported this to Cuissinart/Conair and have received nothing but a big runaround for the past 3 months. They had me fill out pages of explanation, send pictures and then ship the unit back to them. Three months and a multitude of emails later, I’m still fighting with them to get reimbursed for the purchase price and now they refuse to include the $80 charge for the electrician to replace the outlet because his bill was not printed on letterhead. They claim their technicians determined that the unit was fine but the problem was with my wiring. The master electrician that inspected and replaced my outlet strongly disagrees. Their customer service is terrible. This model is dangerous. If you have this model, please unplug it and don’t use it again.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Deluxe Convection Toaster Oven Broiler in Stainless Steel 16.5 wide x 12 (14 including handle) deep x 9.75 high
I purchased a Cuisinart Deluxe Convection Toaster Oven Broiler in August of 2022 for my daughter. In November of 2024, we discovered that the plug was melted onto the back of the unit where the heating unit is located. We reached out to Conair, Cuisinarts parent company to advise them this dangerous design flaw and were told that it was our fault for not maintaining a two inch distance between the unit and the plug on the wall.

No incident, no one hurt Made Oct 15, 2022, sent to the company Oct 19, 2022, published by CPSC Nov 2, 2022
The product, in the report: Cuisinart TOA-60 Convection AirFryer Toaster Oven, Premium 1800-Watt Oven with Seven in One Functions and Wide Temperature Range, Large Capacity Air Fryer with 60 minute Timer/Auto Shut Off, Stainless Steel.
I bought a Cuisinart Toaster Oven Air fryer from Amazon. This is the letter that I sent to [REDACTED]: -------------------
Dear [REDACTED],
I bought my nephew the Cuisinart TOA-60 Convection AirFryer Toaster Oven, Premium 1800-Watt Oven with Seven in One Functions and Wide Temperature Range, Large Capacity Air Fryer with 60 minute Timer/Auto Shut Off, Stainless Steel for $225.84 after coupon on January 15, 2022. It was order number [REDACTED].
At first my nephew absolutely loved it. He is a home cook, and said it was the best gift he ever received. In July 2022 it caught on fire. He thought he did something wrong. He called Cuisinart and they said, Oh well, do not use it, throw it out. It was seven months old. I checked the reviews before I bought it. I researched the product all over. I did not see mention of this issue except for “sometimes it runs hot”. He loved the oven so much he wants to buy a replacement. I don’t trust the company anymore.
I have since looked at past reviews using your filter for “critical reviews”. As of today, there are 3,574 reviews claiming that the oven burned their food or caught on fire. We are not the only ones that this happened to. It seems to be a known problem, and Cuisinart is not honoring anything. They wouldn’t replace it.
I am curious if you are aware that you are selling a product with a known defect, and that the company will not honor its warranty? What bothers me the most is that we bought Cuisinart specifically because it is a good company. Or at least it used to be.
After all my research, I believe I should be refunded the full cost of the item. Additionally, I believe that you need to stop selling this particular product.
It seems that within the first year, the temperature controls stop working correctly, and the oven catches on fire. In the reviews everybody loves it, until it burns up. Luckily my nephew was in the kitchen when it happened, because the entire back of the unit was on fire.
It’s extremely disappointing that a company like Cuisinart would be selling this item.
I appreciate any help regarding this matter and look forward to hearing from you soon. -------------------
Amazon fully refunded me. They do not have the item for sale any longer. I am extremely concerned about these all-in-one toaster air fryers. They seem to run very hot. I have a friends who has one made by [REDACTED] and that one caught fire after 4 years. Somebody mentioned that there’s no heat shielding, but honestly I don’t know what that means.
I am wondering if there have been many house fires caused by these products. I have been trying to find one that is safe, but if you look at critical reviews, they all seem to have this issue. I cannot believe nobody’s got caught in a fire caused from this yet. I think it’s only a matter of time.
Thank you.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart TOB-40N toaster oven
We bought the Cuisinart toaster oven TOB-40N last year. We noticed the light come on even though we were not using it and it was in the OFF position. It turns itself on when it is in the off position. Also, sometimes when we press the button to toast it immediately turns itself off. We are trying to locate the receipt, we remember buying it during the pandemic because our regular salesperson was not at PC Richards. We always relied on and trusted [REDACTED] to recommend products to us, but he stopped working during the pandemic. I emailed Cuisinart, but received no response. Is this a known issue with this model? [REDACTED]

The Cuisinart Toaster Oven Broiler (Model: TOB-40N) is a fire risk. I purchased this oven in 2019. After 9 months of regular use, the oven began turning on randomly on its own and got very hot despite the fact it was turned off so I had to unplug it when not in use to prevent a fire or my child burning himself. I contacted Cuisinart/Conair customer service on 8/11/20 and received a replacement (same model). 9 months later, the replacement began, and continues, acting up as well. This time, it immediately turns off when using it in toast or bagel mode, so I have to keep pressing the button to toast, which is also a hazard. I’ve seen similar complaints in reviews for this toaster oven and believe this toaster oven should be recalled before someone gets hurt or loses their home.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart toaster oven Model TOB-40
We originally purchased the Cuisinart toaster oven model TOB-40 approximately 5 years ago and noticed that after some time, the oven would turn on by itself even with the knob in the off position. We purchased the exact same model as a replacement and the same thing happened within less than a year of use. This time, we reported it to the company and they sent a replacement under warranty. The new toaster oven (3rd one) began to do the same thing within a few weeks. I notified Cuisinart again about the safety hazard and to ask for a full refund this time as I did not want a replacement and they stated all they were able to do was send another one under warranty. There is obviously something drastically wrong with this particular model and continues to be a huge safety hazard.

We have a Cuisinart toaster oven that malfunctioned to the point of being dangerous. The lower front heating element had begun to warp/bend over the past month, but it still worked. This morning while making toast, I noticed that the left side of the element was white hot like a flame. It looked like it was swelling at the connection point. I yanked the plug from the wall to avoid a fire. I have no doubt that the appliance would have caught on fire if it had been left to toast as usual. An adult was using the product to make toast when this occurred. The appliance was located on the kitchen counter with no other items around it.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Custom Classic Toaster Oven Broiler. Stainless steel front with black top and sides. Model TOB-40N. Intertek 3154152. Serial number 1719.
First received a Cuisinart Toaster Oven (intertek 3154152, Model TOB-40N, serial # 0418) for Christmas in 2019. On 1/18/2020, I was in the kitchen and saw the unit turn itself on and off several times. It was plugged in and in the toast position; however, no one was using it. I unplugged it in an effort to reset the unit, then plugged it back in. The next morning it was on again with the top of the unit being very hot. I contacted Cuisinart who replaced the unit with a new one serial number 1719 and advised me to cut the cord on the old unit and place it in the trash. On December 25, 2020, the new unit came on and off by itself multiple times. Settings were in the off position. I have a video capturing the event. This may present a potential fire hazard.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Toaster Oven, Model TOB-40N; silver/chrome color
I purchased a Cuisinart toaster oven (Model TOB-40N) in 2019. I had it for less than a year and in December/January I found that the toaster would turn on by itself. I typically unplug it when it is not in use, but even after removing my toast or bagel, in the short time it takes me to put it on a plate and add a topping, the toaster over would turn on and off by itself. I found this to be dangerous, because the auto shutoff didn’t seem to work. Because it was within the warranty period, I contacted Cuisinart to report the problem. They offered to send me a replacement toaster, same model; I accepted. Now, less than six months later, I am experiencing the same problem again. This time, the toaster turned on by itself, despite being in the OFF position, while I was out of the house.
This product seems defective and I am surprised there isn’t a recall.

Submitter believes this product is a fire hazard.
My concern is about Cuisinart modle #T0B-60N1 Serial #4???
This toaster oven has 3 control knobs The top knob is temperature control warm, bake (tempature) Broil/toast. The center knob is the function; toast, pizza/bake, convection bake, convection broil, broil, warm The lower knob is the on/off/timmer
3 times I turned on the oven, with the top knob in the Bake Mode at 350 the center knob was set at Convection Bake the Lower knob was set at on. the oven turned on the Broil and Bake elements fully red hot; it was not in a timmed mode. the elements are on full. Instead of the bake element being at 350 If I had not noticed that it was not on bake but toast. So the oven will get as hot as it can ,on full blast, until you shut it off. Even in good conditions it could cause a fire if left on to long. I believe that center control switch is defective.

The submitter is reporting the unit for posing a shock hazard.
He sustained an electric shocked when he touched the unit and his leg was touching the dishwasher face. He indicated that the unit was on the convectional bake setting and he immediately turned the unit off. This prompted him to test the unit’s voltage. He used an electrical tester and while the unit was off it had a voltage of 110. He states that whenever the unit is touched there is a shock whether it is on or off.
He called the firm today to report the incident and request they investigate the matter. He said the Rep. he spoke to did not understand the hazard and repeatedly informed him that the unit was out of warranty.
The submitter did not seek medical attention.

I have a Cuisinart Toaster Oven, Model TOB-40, SN 20920. It is about 2 - 3 years old.
On the morning of July 7th I used it to toast my breakfast. As usual, after a few minutes, the little red indicator light went off and I heard a beep. But I noticed the bottom two heating elements were still glowing orange, rather than cooling down.
I even moved the knob from “toast” to “off” but the elements stayed on. At this point the toaster oven should have been off, and the red indicator light was off the whole time.
The only way I could get the two bottom elements to go off was to unplug the unit from the wall.
The next day, I plugged it back in. The elements stayed off. But when I pushed the “Toast” button, the problem happened again: The two bottom elements turned on, and would not go off unless I unplugged the unit from the wall.
I think this is dangerous and possibly a fire hazard, as it means the toaster oven could be on continuously without the owner knowing.

On Feb 4, 2018 my Cuisinart Convection Toaster Oven caught fire. The fire was behind the control panel and smoke and flames were coming out the top of the unit. I got it unplugged and out of the house where my wife deployed a fire extinguisher. There were no injuries, but our cabinets and kitchen were inundated with an electrical/fire/smoke smell. The oven was a loss, we used up our fire extinguisher, and the patio was a mess after the extinguisher was deployed.
On Feb 5, 2018 I contacted Cuisinart and relayed the information above and all ID numbers on the product. They volunteered to replace the product, supplied information on a replacement oven, and asked that I send the oven to them, which I agreed. I said it was important I learn what happened as I have another Cuisinart oven and I need to know if it is safe.
On Feb 7, my wife contacted Cuisinart about a replacement and they changed what was promised on Feb 5. Now having no confidence in Cuisinart to provide me with information on the product, I opted not to return the oven.
On Feb 13, I received a letter from [REDACTED] , Claims Manager with Conair the parent company of Cuisinart. Now having a record of their request for the oven, I mailed it to them on Feb 26. I again noted the need for information on the safety of this product as I have another one of them. Since then we have heard nothing from Conair or Cuisinart. Not sure how important this is to Cuisinart, but as it could have burned down our home, and we have another one of these ovens, it is important to us. Can you help get some answers from Cuisinart or Conair?

I have owned a Cuisinart TOB-40 Toaster Oven for about 5 years. The last few weeks the door has started opening difficult. Today after cooking toast twice when I went to open the door the second time it was once again hard to open and then completely shattered all over the place. Luckily I was not hurt by small glass fragments that went everywhere. I was able to clean up all the small chunks and slivers of glass up after about an hour. Had this been a child or the oven was at eye level it could have seriously injured someone. I have notified Cuisinart today and they are sending me a replacement oven but not sure I really want another one of this similar model now a TOB-40N. There is already a recall on this over for electric cord. Not sure if the newer model will fix the door and glass breakage or only correct the power cord issue.

I was preparing to make carrot cake, when I was almost done with mixing the ingredients, turned on the oven picked BAKE then I put it on 350F, closed the door of the oven. I was finishing up with mixing the last ingredients of the cake all the sudden I jumped away scared and terrified from a boom sound of the glass explosion, my 19 months old son was close to the oven since it was placed on top of the counter, he started screaming and crying after what happened. A glass went inside my son’s eye...he kept on crying until next day the glass came off his eye.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Classic Toaster Oven Broiler Model: TOB-40
The toaster oven heating element does not turn off after toasting has completed. When the Function knob is set to Toast and the Start/Stop button is pressed, the red light indicates the toaster is on and the elements heat up to toast your bread. Once the oven beeps indicating toasting is complete, the indicator light turns off, however the upper heating elements do NOT turn off. Even after turning the Function knob to OFF, the element is still burning. At this point, the only way to turn off the oven is to cut power by unplugging it.
This is incredibly dangerous because the oven indicates that it’s off when it really isn’t. It has happened intermittently several times now and we don’t realize it until we can smell the smoke generated by the extremely hot element that never turns off.
We cannot use this unsafe product any longer.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Custom Classic Toaster Oven Broiler TOB-40N
The first day that we used this toaster oven, the door “exploded”. We were heating up spanakopita according to the directions: the baking tray was in position A, lined with aluminum foil (as several recipes in the instruction and recipe booklet instructed), the oven was preheated for 5 minutes, and it was set on “bake” at 375 degrees. After 10 minutes we heard a crash in the kitchen. The too of the door had come off, leaving shattered pieces of glass on the counter and floor. There was a hole across the top of the door and the remaining glass was shattered. Pieces of shattered glass continued to fall off the door. We carefully turned the dial to off and unplugged the oven from the wall. We were very fortunate that no one had been standing near the toaster oven when the door shattered, sending pieces of shattered glass out at least 3 feet in front of it. My husband did get cut by the glass when he was cleaning it up and taking the food out of the oven.

I purchased my Cuisinart toaster oven (TOB-40) 3 years ago. About 1 year ago I noticed the front coil had a small warp to it, however I did not think much of it at the time. Today the warp has become significantly worse and was actually touching the bottom crumb tray and caused a small fire inside of the toaster oven. I immediately looked online and have come across numerous complaints over the past 4 years regarding this toaster oven. It is very dangerous and should be recalled nationally due to his long history of safety issues.

I really like the toaster oven and when I went on line to purchase a new one I noticed that the reviews said this problem has happened to other people. It is definitely a fire hazard and I feel this toaster should have been recalled. I took pictures of the problem but cannot seem to attach them to this message.

I own a Cuisinart Convection Toaster Oven, model TOB-60N. I noticed this morning when I moved the oven to clean the counter that the plug had melted to the back of the toaster oven. There is no visible warning on the oven that the back panel could get hot enough to melt the plug. I’m certain I am not the only consumer who uses a counter height plug to power the oven, and to unknowingly push the oven as close to the wall as possible. This is a serious safety issue! Pictures are attached. Please advise.

The product, in the report: Convection Oven; stainless steel. 22.6 x 18.5 x 13 inches.
I bought a Cuisinart Convection Oven, model # 10B-260N1 to replace another. I registered the oven online with Cuisinart but when I check my products. Since they did not respond to my email concerning why my product is not listed as registered, I did not bring up this safety concern. My previous counter top ovens had a magnet type device to latch on to the center rack when opening the door. This oven has 2 hooks; one on each side. They are shaped like a finger box cutting tool. When the door is closed, they hook onto the rack; when the door is opened, they pull the rack out. However, these hooks are dangerous in that when cleaning the door, if one is not careful, one can cut a finger every easily. I’ve nicked myself several times even though I’m aware of these hooks. The manual does not mention these hooks as safety warnings.

On Tuesday, August 9, 2016, I received an electrical shock when I turned off my Cuisinart toaster oven. The original Cuisinart TOB-40 toaster oven was purchased August 24, 2012. It had a 3 year warranty. Within the second year of use, one of the front bottom elements became warped. After the warping became severe, we contacted Cuisinart. The company sent a replacement oven in November 2014. We had to pay for shipping the original unit back to Cuisinart, $35.48.
The front bottom heating element warped extensively on the replacement unit prior to the end of the second year of use. On August 9, 2016, when I turned off the toaster oven, I received an electrical shock.
After this incident, I researched reviews on various sites where this toaster oven is sold and found numerous consumers reported problems with the heating elements warping. Some reported this resulted in fires and shocks.

This unit is a fire hazard.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart TOB-40 toaster oven
Four years ago we purchased a Cuisinart TOB-40 toaster. Within 11 months, both heating elements had bent severely and cracked open - revealing the inner core. We received a replacement under warranty. Recently, I noticed that the rear element on the replacement has also bent and cracked open, this time the element is pressing down on the removable crumb tray and the split is facing the tray. I am concerned that this could result in energization of the tray - a major problem, since the device is not grounded.
A second issue is that the rear of the oven gets so hot that it melts everything in contact with it - enclosing the power cable. Our previous appliance even melted its own cable to the point that it suck to the oven and almost exposed the inner wiring to the oven housing - again a major problem due the lack of a ground. I just noticed that the cable of the replacment machine is also melted - although not so badly that the wires are showing.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart “Total Touch” Convection Toaster Oven Broiler, model CTO-140PC
On Nov 20, 2015, I was preparing toast with my Cuisinart “Total Touch” Convection Toaster Oven Broiler, when I heard the oven make an odd electrical sound. Upon examining it, I noted that the oven appeared to have shorted internally - I could see flames inside, and smoke started billowing out of the top vents. I immediately unplugged the product, and took it outside - where the smoke continued. I poured water on the product (not a good move for an electrical fire, I now recognize), and finally noted that all activity with it, had stopped.
There was no previous damage noted to the product, and it had performed quite well for the several years we have owned it. To see this event take place - risking my home, and the health and safety of my 5-year-old son especially – was very troubling.
I called Cuisinart at 800-726-0190, and reported the issue, providing my model and serial number: Model: CTO-140PC Serial: 30412
The agent [REDACTED] took my name, address, and phone number, and indicated I would be contacted by corporate in two to three days.
However, a week later, I still had yet to hear anything back.
So, I called them again on Nov 27, 2015 at the same number. The agent this time,[REDACTED] , took my name and phone, again confirmed the model and serial, and asked for details of the situation. As before, she asked if there was any injury or property damage. I indicated “no”, and indicated that I have photos and video of the results of the incident.
Apparently, NO RECORD of my previous call was available in their system. She asked for my address, and again logged my phone number. Also asked for a email address - I provided them [REDACTED].
While on the phone, I also reiterated that the Cuisinart rep at Bed Bath and Beyond (on the previous Friday, 11/20) assured me that Cusinart Corporate would take care of the situation - no matter how long ago we purchased the product.
She (as [REDACTED] did before) indicated they would call me back within 2-3 business days. I indicated my lack of confidence in this process, but she indicated she “guarantees” that someone will call me by Tuesday, Dec 1, 2015.
It is now after close of business on Tuesday.
I am obviously very concerned at the problem encountered with the product - but especially troubled by the lack of engagement of Cusinart. They appear to have phone representatives who take down information, ask questions of the consumer to flesh out their report, and then completely ignore the resulting information.
I am therefore reaching out to the Consumer Products Safety Commission for assistance. Not only do I want Cusinart to take this incident seriously, but I need them to answer as to why I’ve experienced so much frustration in simply trying to report the issue to them.
Please advise.

I have burned my fingers and wrists a number of times while using this oven because of a metal strip near the upper edge on the inside of the oven door. When the door is open to take food in or out, etc., the opening is so narrow, and the metal strip is so positioned, that it is easy to burn a finger or wrist. This happens even when I use a kitchen tool to slide the shelf or to move the food.
I have used other brands of toaster-oven for many years and have not had this problem.
Incident dates: July-November 2015.

RE: heating element on my Cuisinart Toaster Oven Model T0B-40. I was utilizing this product in normal day-to-day use. I noticed the heating element expanding and forming a balloon on one area of the element. I was concerned it would explode. When I researched this online, I found numerous complaints regarding this issue. I called Cuisinart customer service and they stated they could do nothing as the toaster ovenlwas out of warranty. (This is true.) I then spoke with a supervisor to voice my concerns over the hazardous nature of this issue. She explained to me I could write a letter to the corporate office. I admit I did not do so. Since I had researched the issue and found many complaints about the heating element, I knew Cuisinart was not interested. Most of the other consumers did not get results when contacting Cuinsart.

The toaster oven worked fine for a year or two. One day, without warning, the lower heating element split open and the power cord became hot.
I thought that maybe this particular toaster oven was a lemon until I saw the Amazon.com reviews for the product; it turns out that many other units have failed in exactly this same way. This was a major product failure that could have easily caused harm had I not noticed what had happened right away - combined with the fact that this same product has failed for so many other people in the same way, perhaps there should be a recall of the product.

This is the second Cusinart TOB-40 toaster oven that the heating elements warped and cracked. The first time the lower rear element warped, cracked and caught fire. Luckily I was nearby and was able to prevent it becoming a serious kitchen fire. I contacted Cusinart and got it replaced although it was not a consumer friendly process. The replacement is now about 1 1/2 yrs old and we noticed the top rear element is warped to the point of touching the top and is cracked. We are afraid to use any longer for fear of fire. I contacted Cusinart and while they will replace it I have to ship it back to Arizona from Connecticut and pay shipping BOTH ways. They also will not ship the replacement before 7-10 business days after they receive mine. This will leave us without a toaster for possibly 2-3 weeks. I explained we used it often and this would be a hardship. The insisted the process cannot be changed. So much for customer service
I am very disappointed with Cusinart who claim to have premium products. It is not an inexpensive toaster oven. This is the second unit with a similar defect and they do not acknowledge the heating elements have a problem. I consider this very serious due to the risk of fire.

Cuisinart TOB-40 Custom Classic Toaster Oven Broiler. I’ve owned this toaster for about 4 years and the front heating element has warped. I first noticed it a couple of weeks ago, but couldn’t remember if it had always looked like that. Today I noticed that it was glowing brighter, and upon closer inspection realized that there is a crack in the element.

Some time after using our “Cuisinart TOB-40 Custom Classic Toaster Oven Broiler” for toast at 7:30pm the device activated itself and the heating elements became red hot. We awoke at 9:30pm that evening to the smell of burning plastic and general “hot” smell. We found the toaster with hot elements glowing in the dark kitchen, even through all control dials and lights indicated the toaster was off. The only course of action was to unplug the device after which it cooled normally and displayed no damage.
This is a HUGE concern to me as this presents a sizable fire hazard and it frightens me to think how many times this toaster may have activated while I was not at home.
Reading one star reviews of this product on Amazon.com show many users with similar self-activation complaints, and still others with deformed heating element issues. I obviously have no way of knowing but it seems those issues could be caused by self-activation and over heating cycles while the user is not present.
Please investigate this product to protect consumers who, like me before yesterday, are not suspicious that this appliance could destroy their homes and loved ones. I will not be leaving this product plugged in any more, and will consider whether to discard it completely.
Thank you, [REDACTED]

This incident involves our Cuisinart toaster oven, model number TOB-40 120 VAC 80 Hz 1800 W. On Thursday, February 19, 2015, while we were toasting bread, one of the bottom heating elements caught fire without any apparent cause. There was nothing touching the element when it ignited. I quickly shut off the toaster and unplugged it, and the flame slowly dissipated. The heating element is now deformed (bubbled). We have not used the toaster since. This is a major product safety hazard because, not only because of the spontaneous fire, but the speed at which it occurred. Had I not been standing right at the toaster, I would not have been able to put it out. Please look into this product.

I have a Cuisinart Toaster Oven Broiler, model number TOB-40. The product is barely 8 months old now. The other day I used my oven, and the temperature was VERY off, my food was burned even though I cooked it for less time than I usually do. I turned off all of the knobs and turned around to tend to my burned food. About five minutes later I looked back at the toaster oven and the top coil was still on, despite ALL KNOBS being in the off position. The only way to turn the coil off was to unplug the machine. I contacted Cuisinart and they declared it a “warranty issue,” which is disgusting because this is a clear fire hazard. I did a search online (Amazon) and it turns out several people are having similar issues with their products. This needs to be researched and recalled and Cuisinart needs to be fined for continuing to sell a product they know contains such a gross hazard.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart TOB-40 Custom Classic Toaster Oven Broiler
Have owned this product for 2 1/2 years. Recently -- but it took a while to notice -- the front lower heating element has become more and more warped, until it is now curved almost halfway to the rear element. Looking online I found numerous reports of the identical problem, eventually leading to the element splitting and potentially catching fire. Additionally, this toaster oven sits on top of a microwave with a grounded metal exterior. We recently started getting an electric shock if we turn the toaster oven on, and our hand makes contact with both the microwave exterior and the toaster oven button. I just confirmed >40v of live electrical current with a multimeter, enough to cause serious bodily harm. In short, this product is a widely reported fire hazard and an electrical hazard, yet Cuisinart has continued to manufacture it and charge consumers a shipping fee to replace it under warranty. It should be immediately recalled before it kills someone.

Purchased a Cuisinart TOB-40 Custom Classic Toaster Oven Broiler in March 2011. In May, 2014 one of the four heating elements developed a split in the outer covering. As time passed the split became bigger and started glowing very hot and red. I finally realized that this is a fire hazard, as it became more scary to use the appliance. I called Cuisinart customer service, but they told me that the 3 year warranty expired March, 2014 and they would not do anything about my problem. I am now out a toaster that lasted just over three years. Not only that, but the customer service representative seemed to be well aware of the problem. So if the Company knows that they are selling a defective and dangerous appliance, why have they not taken any steps to recall this product?

Using a Cuisinart TOB-40 Toaster oven and noticed the front heating element is badly warped. I heard a cracking and popping sound so I shut it off. I called Cuisinart to find out if this was normal and/or dangerous. They said it was dangerous, could be a fire hazard and not to use it. I bought it on Amazon August 2011 so I can’t use the warranty. Online I checked to see if others were having the same problem. Dozens of people on Amazon are experiencing warped heating elements that Cuisinart told me are dangerous. A toaster oven that is a fire risk after a short time seems very hazardous.

I didn’t hear anything. I didn’t see any sparks. There was no indication that something had happened. I just happened to notice the problem. I don’t know if the split happened at one time or if it was a gradual failure
I’m very concerned that the split element is a fire hazard.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Classic Toaster Oven / Broiler, model # TOB-40
In December 2011, I purchased a Cuisinart Toaster Oven, model # TOB-40, through Amazon. In July of 2014 I noticed the lower heating element had warped upwards and the insulation had split about 1 1/4 inches, exposing the element. In seeking product info on Amazon, I noticed about 25 user complaints documenting the same problem that I experienced. Some of the users noted they had received an electrical shock or had seen sparking, in addition to the obvious fire hazard. Personally, I experienced sparking. Here is a link to that web page:

The unit was still under the 3 year warranty and I contacted Cuisinart. They offered to replace the unit with the same model. I inquired whether they had modified or corrected this model to address the defect and they had not. I declined their offer to replace the unit with the same model #TOB-40.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Toaster Oven/Broiler. Model TOB-40. Serial Number 30802.
I purchased a Cuisinart Toaster/Broiler Oven. Model TOB-40, Serial Number 30802. It was purchased online from Amazon.com though it was provided to them directly from Cuisinart. Purchased 12/7/2013, arrived 12/9/2013. Worked as described until 5/9/2014. While cooking a pizza, both within the pizza maker company recommendations and within the usage recommendations provided by Cuisinart, the the glass on the front “door” of the oven shattered when I opened it. The entire door failed - handle came off, and the left side of the door came off too! Glass shattered to a distance of greater than one meter from the toaster oven. I have a few pictures, taken with my mobile phone, showing the damage.
I was using the oven in bake mode at 400 degrees. Well within the recommended design use.
After a call to Cuisinart’s Customer Service, they are replacing the oven. However, I am concerned this may be a design problem. I have owned two other toaster oven/broilers, and neither had this type of failure. Both just finally stopped working.
I just recommended by great aunt, who is in her mid-80s, to purchase one and she did. I am worried that this could happen to her. If it did, she could be injured as she would have a hard time cleaning up all the of tiny pieces of glass. I’ve had to clean my kitchen with a damp cloth - including the floor on my hands and knees - to make sure every small piece of glass is thrown away. I have had to throw away all of the cat food on the floor, and also throw out all of the water for my cat. She may not be able to get down to do that, instead having to wait for her homemaker to help do that days later.
I just want to make sure this isn’t a problem with the oven itself and not an isolated incident.
Thank you.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Custom Classic Toaster Oven Broiler TOB-40
Cuisinart TOB-40 toaster oven purchased less than one year ago (December 18, 2012). One of the four heating elements developed a split in the outer covering which started glowing very hot and red (what I call a “hot spot”). This is a serious fire hazard.
Looking at the reviews of this product on Amazon.com, there are many people who have reported the same problem with this product many times. If you look at just this one thread on Amazon ( http://www.amazon.com/review/R29PS611BJCV75/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#R29PS611BJCV75 ) you will see 14 reports of TOB-40 elements that developed “hot spots” (not counting those that just stopped working).
When I called Cuisinart customer service, they were very familiar with the problem and offered to send me a new TOB-40 immediately. They already had my name and address on file. So the company knows that they are selling a defective and dangerous product but is taking no steps to recall it. This is unacceptable.
Please investigate this product quickly before someone gets killed in a house fire!

After using my Cuisinart toaster oven to toast (which shuts it off automatically),both the oven and broiler elements turned on. I smelled it and noticed it glowing brightly. When I attempted to shut it off, it wouldn’t shut off and began to flame. We were able to stop the fire by unplugging the oven.

The plug and cord on our toaster oven become extremely hot during use. This did not happen when we first had the toaster oven, but now happens each time we use it. It is sometimes too hot to touch and we have to use a hot mitt to unplug the toaster oven. My husband and I have both burned our fingers when unplugging the toaster oven after using it. Due to concerns about risk of fire, we unplug the toaster oven any time we are not using it. I contacted the manufacturer and was advised to stop using the product, however because it was more than 3 years old they would not offer to repair or replace it.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Toaster Oven Broiler (TOB-30 Series)
Cuisinart Classic Toaster Oven Broiler (TOB-30 Series) Purchased: 03/08/2007 NOTE: out of warranty
We never leave it plugged in when not in use. We only use it to toast and bake. On average, we use it five (5) times per week. Over the last week we’ve found that when we pull the plug out of the wall, the cord & plug are hot. Today, my wife needed to use a pot holder to pull the plug, because it was so hot after toasting one item. We always pull it using the plug and not by pulling the cord.
We will not be using it anymore (and will be buying a new toaster oven), but will keep it for a while, in case you wish to examine it.
I am reporting this, in case you have had other reports that might lead to bigger safety concerns that might require a recall or safety notice.

I have a Cuisinart brand toaster oven that was previously replaced by the company due to sparks near the switches. The unit has a toast feature with a “darkness” setting. When the food being toasted reaches the desired result, the unit is supposed to turn off. This feature has maflunctioned and does not turn off. This is a safety & fire hazard as the food being toasted could burn and start burning if someone assumes it would turn off by itself.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart TOB-30BW Classic Toaster Oven Broiler. It’s black with silver/grey-colored front/right panel and dials. Serial number 70607.
I received a Cuisinart TOB-30BW approximately 6 years ago as a gift (it was purchased from Bed, Bath, and Beyond). It seemed to work ok for a few months, until one day after using it, I turned the dial to the “off” position, but left the oven plugged in. When I returned to the oven approximately 3 hours later, it was still hot, and the dial was still in the “off” position. I exchanged this toaster oven for the same model, also at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. After about 2 1/2 years, the “new” oven began having problems, as well. Whenever you turn the “Function” dial from the “off” position to “bake” or from “bake” to any of the other positions, you hear a buzzing noise and smoke comes out from the dial.

Hurt, no treatment Made Aug 13, 2012, sent to the company Aug 30, 2012, published by CPSC Sep 14, 2012
The product, in the report: Product is a Cuisinart Convection/Toaster/Broiler oven that sits on a countertop. It is style number TOB-195. This is the expensive stainless steel unit that is sold at better department stores and kitchen stores, not the cheaper version sold at Walmart and Costco.
I have a broiler/convection/toaster oven from Cuisinart that sits on a counter top. The style number is TOB-195. It is an expensive all stainless steel unit. It is seemingly a nice oven, but there is a defect in the design that can prove to be EXTREMELY dangerous, especially to CHILDREN. The elements of the oven are at the top of the unit and very close to the exterior steel casing. There does not seem to be any insulation between the steel and the elements, and if there is - it does not work as it is insufficient. As a result the outside of the unit gets extremely hot when in use to the point that it cannot even be touched without actually causing a burn to the skin. It can actually cause second and third order burns to the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin. That is how hot it gets. Other toaster broilers I have had and still have may get warm but not so hot you cannot even touch the unit. The Cuisinart is of poor design and poses a very serious risk to children in the home, and adults who may inadvertently touch the outside while in use, which is an easy thing to do. It also poses a fire risk, and will melt any plastics that you may place on top while in use. My wife and I have both burned our hands on the unit. We stopped using it, as we did not want our small and teenage children to burn themselves. I contacted the company and they gave me a pat, flip corporate answer which of course absolved themselves of any responsibility in the matter, even though I know they receive the same complaint all of the time. I personally know several people that have the same complaint, including my sister who was also duped into believing the most expensive toaster oven on the market, would actually be a good product. Supposedly Cuisinart knows how to make small appliances, but apparently not. What I do not understand, is why they are still allowed to make and sell this product, and what’s even more - is why they would willingly still make and sell this product after knowing about this problem and receiving complaints. It is a poorly designed product, it is a dangerous product, it is a very expensive product. It is a product we and others cannot use, because of concern for our safety. It is a product that will eventually harm children, if it has not done so yet - however, I think a child somewhere has already been burned by this product. I contacted the company and they gave me a pat, flip corporate answer that admitted the problem, but takes no responsibility and blows me off:
“ Thank you for your inquiry. With this toaster oven you have, the heating coils are right at the very top of the toaster oven. The heat from those coils will make the outside extremely hot, due to the stainless being a conductor. There is no manufacturers defect with the unit as it is operating as it is intended. It is strongly recommended not to place anything on the unit due to the high heat. If you have any further questions please reply, with history, to this email. We invite you to call our Customer Service Department at 1-800-726-0190 , if you prefer. Please keep in mind the Customer Service Agent will not have access to your e-mail information. The hours of operation are 7 AM -11 PM EST Monday through Friday and 9 AM - 5:30 PM on Saturdays and Sundays, excluding major holidays.” Really? They know it gets extremely hot, they intended for it to get extremely hot, and apparently it is operating as it should - which means it is OK to burn people. And the only thing they could say is not to place anything on top. What if my 11 year old decides to touch it for whatever reason? Am I supposed to constantly police my toaster oven? I should not have to have a special protocol in use just to use a countertop appliance. How ridiculous! So basically, they admit and know the unit gets extremely hot and can even explain why, and they admit this is exactly how they intended for it to be - to get so hot that it can actually burn people, and yet all they can do is tell me not to place objects on top, as if I am an idiot and cannot figure that out. That isn’t the point. The point is that I should not have to worry about the obvious unsafe functioning of a product like that, especially when the company is aware of the problem. And especially in a product that cost $175.00 - which is three times the price of their competitors that do not seem to have the problem of burning people.

The consumer says a month before the incident a black coating on the inside of the oven started flaking. He cleaned it thoroughly and continued to use it without incident. On April 24th he started to warm up some food in the toaster oven at 350 degrees. He stepped away to do other tasks.
After a few minutes he noticed smoke and flames coming out of the toaster oven. He quickly unplugged it. The coating started to melt onto the food and elements. He says that this could have posed a serious fire.
He has not used it ever since.
