The product, in the report: Whirlpool Gold Model #GU1200XTLT White Dishwasher
Our Whirlpool Gold Model#GU1200XTLT Dishwasher made a loud noise and when I checked it smoke was rolling out of the right hand corner of the control panel opposite the steam vent. I had to shut off our electrical supply to it. The kitchen stinks of that plastic smell. This dishwasher was purchased 2/22/03 at Sears and installed 2/27/03. We have had it just under 10 years. Thank goodness I caught it early or it surely would have burned up.
It definitely was a fire hazard.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Dishwasher, white, info below
During cycle, dishwasher control board on the right side started smoking. Trying to stop dishwasher using buttons or by opening the door did not work. Disconnected power to dishwasher at breaker to shut off. A little soot on the dishwasher, a strong electrical burning smell, as well as smoke are evidence of a fire, though Whirlpool claims what ‘normally’ happens is just smoke. They are sending a technician and so far have told me that they may cut me a check for $100 in exchange for the dishwasher.

No one hurt Made Nov 12, 2012, sent to the company Dec 6, 2012, published by CPSC Dec 20, 2012
The product, in the report: Whirlpool Dishwasher. Quiet Partner II. White, under counter
I started my Whirlpool Quiet Partner II dishwasher on the normal cycle wash at approximately 3 pm on 11/10. I stayed in the kitchen to straighten up and glanced over at the dishwasher to see what I thought was steam coming out of the left hand side vent, about ten minutes later. It looked strange so I went over and put my hand out to find it was not warm like steam. At that moment more smoke quickly starts pouring out the right side and smells terrible. I open the dishwasher slightly as to not get burnt if there was flames. After a few moments the smoke subsided, strong smell of burning wires and plastic. Water never filled the basin, but the dish soap had been expelled into the bottom. I did not sense heat on the interior. I am glad I was standing right there, had I not been there I strongly feel like it would have flamed and caused major damage. I found that this is happening all across the US and no recall issued yet for many models.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
A few minutes after starting our dishwasher load, we noticed a foul plastic/electronics burning type smell from kitchen. Open entering the kitchen we observed smoke pouring from the front panel of the dishwasher. The dishwasher didn’t respond to key commands to “cancel/stop” the load. We ran to the garage and turned off the circuit breaker, which appearantly worked, as the smoke and smell dissappated over the next 15 minutes.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool dishwasher. I had it replaced immediately. Whirlpool has all the information since they came to my home to “fix/repair” the recall
I owned a whirlpool dishwashert that was installed in my new home in 2004. A few months after, I received a letter to schedule a fire hazard repair. The repair was done and the dishwasher was working fine until recently. On October 6, 2012 we started the dishwasher and were watching TV in the family room when we smelled plastic burning. We then notice smoke and fire coming from the front panel of the dishwasher. I try to turn it off unsuccesfully. I had to manually turn the braker off. If we had left the house and leave the dishwaser on, our house would have been burnt down 100%. Our plans for the day changed. We went shopping for a new dishwasher, Not a whirlpool or [REDACTED] of course. Though, the dishwasher was repaired, it still did catch on fire despite the fact the recall had been “fixed.” This is a very unsafe condition. Neighbors came to our house and they have never heard of, or seen a dishwasher catch on fire before. This recall could have resulted in fatalities, etc. Luckily, we were near the kitchen and in our house.

I opened the dishwasher door and it continued running. Finally I shut off all the breakers to the house and then by process of elimination determine which one handled that part of the kitchen.
I went back to Lowe’s that afternoon and bought a [REDACTED]. I’ve subsequently determined that my model # had a recall but my serial number was not within the range indicated in the recall. It appears as if the recall happened before I purchased my dishwasher at Lowe’s.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
I purchased a Whirlpool Kitchen Aid Dishwasher model KUDS30lXSS It has been broken 4 times in 4 months. It keeps having the same problem. Fuse in control panel then control panel. They have replaced the fuse 3 times and the control panel twice. I am waiting for the next service call to fix it for the 4th time. I asked for a replacement machine and they refused. So far, it has taken. 7 service calls. First they come to diagnose the problem. Then they order the part (s). Then they come back again to install it. And, it always has the same problem. If you read the articles, Kitchenaid has had problems with their machines causing fires. I’m no expert but I suspect that this keeps breaking because the fuse in the control panel is not hearty enough. My guess is that they won’t put a fuse in hearty enough because it’s a defectively designed product and they are afraid it will cause a fire.

He was unable to be precise on whether there were flames, sparks or smoke.
The consumer’s husband opened the back of the control panel to look inside and examine the damages. He found that the inside had cables burnt and the plastic areas had melted. There were no damages to her home and she did not have to contact the fire department.

Consumer says the dishwasher never shuts off by itself. This past week while washing a load of dishes, late in the cycle the unit started emitting a lot of smoke--filled the whole kitchen up, and doors and windows had to be opened to get the smoke out. Consumer opened the dishwasher door and pushed cancel and drain. This has happened on a previous occasion, approximately six months ago. Retailer was contacted who said they would send out a service technician, and charge for the service call. Consumer then did a “Live Chatll with Whirlpool who sent out a service technician free of charge. The tech said nothing was wrong with the dishwasher.

The product, in the report: whirlpool dishwasher GU2275XTVB1
During normal cycle, my 18 month old Whirlpool dishwasher (GU2275XTVB1) began emitting a strong burning plastic smell. I checked for any items that may have fallen and were burning down below, but nothing was there. It continued running and I began opening windows and turning on fans, still thinking it was just the large amount of plastic ware that I had in the washer. I moved my two small children upstairs away from the terrible smell, only to find it had already spread throughout our home. The smell became overwhelming and I immediately went to turn off the dishwasher, only to find that it had already tripped my circuit breaker. My husband pulled it out and turned it upside down to find severely charred wiring underneath and the metal parts were charcoal black. I’m so thankful that our circuit breaker tripped and that we didn’t start it in the early morning when my husband leaves for work like we normally do. I have lost faith in Whirlpool products due to this scary incident that left us all coughing and trying to air out the house. After reading other similar stories, I strongly believe this should be recalled before people are actually killed by these faulty dishwashers.

Whirlpool Quiet Partner II Dishwasher Model DU1055XTVS8 Serial #F12419594 had an electrical short somewhere near the power cord inside the dishwasher leaving behind a burning wire smell that filled the whole house. Please note that the dishwasher was NOT in use at the time of the incident and had not been used in 3 months. It was simply plugged into an outlet. This Whirlpool dishwasher is only 7 months old and has only been used 3 times (once when it was initially installed to test a water cycle (no dishes in it) and twice during the Christmas holiday. It worked great all three times. However, this is a 2-person household with people who eat out all the time so the dishwasher has not been used since the holidays when guests were over. Very dangerous and odd incident for a dishwasher to simply short out while not in use. Please beware of this product.

The product, in the report: under the counter dishwasher
When the dishwasher is used, it occasionally trips the circuit breaker. This has happened 3 times so far.
Approximately 3 weeks ago, the consumer attempted to use the dishwasher, but it would not come on. The consumer looked at the circuit breaker and noticed that one of the breakers had tripped. The consumer turned the breaker back on and the dishwasher started immediately. Another time, the machine stopped after 10 mins of a cycle. The dishwasher only worked after the breaker was turned back.
The consumer has contacted the mfr. several times about this matter. A service tech. was supposed to come out to her home on 3/16/12, but the tech. did not show up. The appointment was scheduled between 1:00am - 5:00pm. The consumer called the mfr. around 3:30pm to see if she was still on schedule and the rep. (name unknown) said that she was. However, the tech. called the consumer at 3:45pm and told her that they could not make it and asked to reschedule. The appointment was rescheduled for 3/19/12.
(3/19/12) The technician came out and inspected the dishwasher. The tech. told the consumer that he had to replace the wire harness and he ordered the part. The consumer is being charged $97.57 for the part, but the firm is covering the labor and the cost of the service call.
On 3/29/12, the technician cancelled the appt to fix the dishwasher and did not show up (the second) time.
The dishwasher is used once a week.
The consumer had the person who installed the dishwasher take a look at it. He also has done other work around the consumer’s home. The installer examined the machine and showed the consumer that there was some black discoloration near the control panel of the machine. It could actually be seen from the outside of the machine.
The consumer said that she believes that this is a potential safety hazard.

Dishwasher was set for delayed start in night. Was awoken to the smell of burning electrical. Found dishwasher running but without any of the panel indicator lights illuminated. Opened dishwasher door to investigate but the machine continued to run. Finally terminated operation by switching off breaker. Strong buned electrical odor from machine. Next morning investigated and found control panel inside door charred and nearly burned through in several locations. Wiring harness also burned through in two locations and several plastic parts melted. If I had not awoken or if we had not been home this could have caused a house fire.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Gold Quiet Partner III.
On January 13, 2012, the Whirlpool Dishwasher (Model GU2400XTPS1; Serial # FR4515019) was running. A large pop and flash was seen coming from the kitchen and when investigated, dark black smoke was pouring out of the control panel. Power was cut to the unit and the fire stopped. After the unit cooled, the unit was removed. The control panel caught fire. I contacted Whirlpool and reported the incident. They sent an independent technician to review the unit. He determined that the control panel had caught fire and the initiation point was the P7 connector.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool under-counter dishwasher
My Whirlpool dishwasher GU 1200xtls2 (serial fp30008042) caught fire.
I ran the dishes on normal. I am not sure how long the cycle had run, but it was still during the “wash” cycle. I went into the kitchen and decided to check on the top rack as the last load hadn’t washed well, so I wanted to make sure water was circulating. I opened the door and saw that the top dishes were wet, but heard what sounded like electrical sizzle sounds. It was then that I noticed that there was a fire in the dishwasher-- even with water in it! I ran to turn off the power breaker then back to the dishwasher to see if I needed to call the fire department. Within a few moments the blaze had died down.
I am not sure what caught fire. I see nothing in the bottom of the dishwasher that fell on the heating element or anything like that (but right now I am not messing with it). Perplexed wondering what the heck had happened, I got on the computer, did a search and saw that Whirlpool had recalled my model, but not my serial number, due to fires.
I came here to file a safety notice.

I woke up from falling asleep on the couch and smelled something burning (around 1:00am) . I went into the kitchen and the smell got stronger. I looked at the diswasher and saw an orange glow coming out of the bottom of the door of the dishwasher. I went over to the dishwasher and the lights were going off (dishwasher shutting off and on also) and on. I cancelled the washing process and let the water run out. I opened the dishwasher and smelled a strong burning odor. I went down and throw the breaker off. I stayed up till about 1:30am to make sure there was no fire. I went to bed untill about 2:30am to check to see if there was any fire or heat and found nothing at this time. This is a Whirlpool gold dishwasher model GU1100XTLQ1 serial number FP3714818. The control panel of my Whirlpool dishwasher caught fire. I did some research and found that the model number of my dishwasher is included in a recall (http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml96/96133.html), my serial number does not fall in the range shown. My model number is 665.16382300 and my serial number is FP5104601. Because of the extremely dangerous nature of this problem, I decided to go ahead and fill out this form. I can provide pictures of (and the actual failed panel) of the part with the heat/fire damage. If this had happened overnight or when I was no home, there would have been a house fire and lives as well as property could have been lost. When speaking to the manufacturer, they were very unconcerned. I would be very concerned if my product caught fire. I went ahead and bought a replacement part for $153.57 and replaced it myself.

Dishwasher control panel randomly caught fire not too long after we started a load of dishes, smoke came out of the front panel and filled the kitchen. This dishwasher is a serious safety hazard, and I feel lucky that I was able to de-energize it before it got out of control. The house still smells like smoke. I took the front panel apart and found the circuit board and connectors melted and black. I have no confidence in it being safe after repair.

7 yr. old Whirlpool dishwasher stopped running during wash cycle. My wife said she had been smelling “hot electrical” components during washes in the past. After testing I found the thermal fuse had blown. After replacing the unit ran for a few washes then the smell got worse. Suddenly black smoke came out of the control panel. The fuse blew again and burned this time. I have also had problems with the machine leaking at the tub/door edges. The flexible splash guard is torn and the plastic door liner is warped. I’m done with this machine. Then I heard about the class action lawsuit on 11/17/11.

The product, in the report: under the counter dishwasher
The dishwasher was placed in the home prior to the consumer moving in approximately 4 years ago so the exact place of purchase is unknown.
While using the dishwasher in the wash cycle for approximately 10 minute he noticed smoke coming from the direction of the dishwasher. After carefully examining the dishwasher he noticed that there was smoke and flames coming from the control panel.
He opened the door to the dishwasher and that did not stop the unit from running so he then reached under the kitchen sink to unplug it from the wall outlet.
The firm was contacted on 11/10/2011 and scheduled a service repair for a third party company Best Service to come out to the home. They came out a few days later (exact date is unknown) and the service technician advised the consumer that the circuit board and control panel was what caused the failure.
Parts were ordered and Best Service Company will come back out to the home to make the necessary repairs when they are available. The appliance is still currently unplugged from the wall outlet and has not been used since the failure occurred.

The dishwasher was still running when he had left the kitchen and gone to the basement. (Electric and water do not mix). He had gone to the basement to shut the breaker off which stopped the dishwasher and stopped the sparks and smoke. Had we not been home our house could have been a total loss or worse case we could have died in the fire.

I turned on my dishwasher and left the room. My son (5) noticed a bad smell, so I started searching for this smell. When I went to my kitchen my dishwasher was on fire, and kitchen was full of smoke. Immediately, I removed the kids and pets from the house, cut power to the appliance and called 911. The fire company came and said that yes it was an electrical fire from the dishwasher. I replaced the entire kitchen appliances, as now I had a bad opinion of Whirlpool appliances, and honestly, afraid the others could catch fire too. I had no idea that there was a recall on these items, till now, 7 months later.

Because she had not walked away and was beside the dishwasher she was able to open the door.
The sparks stopped after she opened the door but the burning and the odor of burning continued for maybe 3 minutes.
Caller did not trip the breaker and said it didn’t appear to be out of position, all breakers were o.k.
Caller states that dishwasher was in house when she and her husband purchased it in 1998. She is calling manufacturer once we hang up from call. That she would like to have dishwasher replaced at manufacturer expense.

The product, in the report: Whirpool energy star white built in dishwasher. It has a knob not buttons. It has a switch to use heated dry or no heat dry. I’m not sure about dimensions. I believe it is a standard size.
Last week I loaded the dishwasher like normal. Added my dishwasher detergent shut the door turned it on and went about cleaning the kitchen. After 3 mins I realized I’d left a fork in the sink. So I opened the dishwasher to add the fork. Only when I’d opened the dishwasher door smoking was coming out and I smelt something burning. I left it alone until my husband got home and could look at it. When he got home he ran it each cycle everything seemed fine but it was making strange noise. Later that night I started another load. It started making noises really bad so I opened it up and there was smoke coming out. So I pulled out the racks and thought maybe it needs to be cleaned, though it wasn’t dirty at all. While I was wiping a wet soap sponged over the inside I noticed a couple burn marks. I am terrified to run the dishwasher obviously something is catching on fire somewhere or at least burning the inside. I do have pictures if you need them. The product, in the report: Whirlpool Partner IV Dishwasher, Model GU1500XTKQO, serial number FM0720274
I have a Whirlpool Gold Dishwasher, named Whirlpool Partner IV, Model GU1500XTKQO, serial number FM0720274 that started on fire. I purchased the dishwasher in August 2002, and had it installed in October 2002. In February 2009. I phone Whirlpool stating I smelled something electrical from the dishwasher. A tech comes to my home for a service call. On Feb. 13, 2009 the heating element and soap dispenser were replaced, because the electrical smell could not be properly identified, so this was the easiest solution. At about 7:30 PM Sept. 9, 2011 I started the above mentioned dishwasher. It made a crackly noise, that I first associated with the incoming water heating. Then I saw flames coming out of the control panel and thick black smoke. I immediately hit the door latch shutting off power supply. My husband turned off the dishwasher circuit. September 12 , 2011 I phone Whirlpool and reported the incident. my dishwasher is 9 years old. I can accept that a 9 year old dishwasher may stop working and attribute it to normal use. However starting on fire, is an entirely different curve. Thank goodness we were home.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool white dishwasher
My wife and I own a Whirlpool dishwasher Model #GU2548XTPQ3 and Serial #FS0101131. On 09-06-11 my wife started our dishwasher and went to bed. about 10 minutes later our son started screaming for us from the kitchen. As we ran into the kitchen there was smoke filling the room and there were sparks and flames coming from the top of the front latch and electrical panel. I touched the front panel at the start/stop button and tried to turn it off. although the light went out of the front of the panel it continued to spark and create a flame. I quickly ran out of the house and turned off my main control panel and went inside to find a flashlight. After learning which fuse was connected to my dishwasher I turned that one off and then turned my main back on. We then went into the kitchen and found our kitchen filled with smoke but the sparks and fire were out. We also thought it was strange that the door had popped open and water was on the floor. This was obviously an electrical fire caused by the electrical panel having shorted out. I called whirlpool and they said that they would have a technician come out at no charge to look at and fix our dishwasher. I asked if we would be charged for the technician coming out and they said that they would not be charging for the house call or for the repair, but we would have to pay for the parts. My wife and I have a problem with this considering the fact that if our son had not been home at the time, our home could have been burned down or even worse, we could have been hurt or even killed.I feel that Whirlpool should be held accountable for any product that threatens it’s customers lives.

The product, in the report: a plastic dishwasher
This dishwasher shorted out several times before. Shortly after placing the dishwasher on the normal wash setting within a matter of minutes she noticed that the unit had powered in the off position without completing the cycle and when she attempted to power back in the on position. She reset the circuit breaker and it still would not power in the on position.
She contacted an electrician (name not provided) and he attempted to look at the unit and he could not locate duplicate the failure. She then contacted the firm on 8/15/2011 and was advised that she would be required to pay for the parts and the labor if she wanted a technician come out.
The consumer indicated that she believes the appliance might have short circuit. The consumer isn’t sure if whether or not she wants to have the unit repaired or replace.

The product, in the report: dishwasher
The dishwasher was powered in the on position on the normal cycle prior to the consumer going to bed and within a few hours she and her husband awoke to a strong plastic burning odor in the home.
The consumers husband got up immediately and went into the kitchen where he noticed smoking and flames coming from the control panel of the dishwasher.
The consumer’s husband used a fire extinguisher that was close by to put the fire out but there were minor smoke damages inside of the dishwasher. He then powered the circuit breaker in the off position to cease all power to the dishwasher .
On 8/12/2011 the consumer’s husband removed the control panel from the dishwasher and noticed that the wires were charred and melted together. The firm was contacted on 8/12/2011 and he advised the representative that he spoke with (representative name is unknown) that he had removed the control panel and discovered the melting and burnt wires.
The representative advised the consumer that he was not to remove the control panel and insisted that he have a technician come out to the home to service the appliance. The consumer was also advised that the appliance was no longer covered under a warranty. A technician is scheduled to come out to the home on 8/17/2011.
While doing some research on the internet the consumer came across a recall (see Release # 05-123) where her model number was affected but the serial number was not.

The product, in the report: dishwasher
On 5/15/2011 after the cycle in the dishwasher had completed itself ( the dishwasher was placed on the normal setting for approximately an hour) she then used the lever to unlock the door to open the dishwasher when she received a minor shock to her right hand.
On 5/16/2011 after completely a load of dishes in the dishwasher (the same cycle was used) while trying to open the door she received another electrical shock (that last longer than the first incident) to her right hand.
The dishwasher is a customized door by the manufacturer it has a metal strip on the front at the top near the control panel and the color of it is cobalt blue.
The firm was contacted on 5/2/2011 and spoke with the [REDACTED] at [REDACTED] from the Safety Department and an appointment was set up for a technician to come out to take a look at the unit to determine if any repairs would need to be made. She was instructed to place gloves on her hand to go under the sink to unhook the dishwasher and not use it until a technician could come out to take a look at the dishwasher
A technician from Asians Appliances came out on 5/18/2011 he went under the sink to hook the dishwasher back up. He then used a meter that was used to detect electrical currents and while in front of the dishwasher in front of the handle of the dishwasher and the meter began to beep continuously.
He began to operate the dishwasher on the same setting the consumer normal operates it on. Shortly after powering the dishwasher on in the cycle, foul-smelling black smoke and two large flames shot out from the right side of the control panel. He had to put out the fire with dry towels.
On 6/13/2011 she contacted [REDACTED] from the firm and was advised to have the machine hauled away for scrap and not recycle so that it would not be used again. She contacted the retailer and was provided the number to Alacarte Haulaway at [REDACTED]and she scheduled an appointment to come and pick up the machine On 6/15/2011 . On the same date she faxed over documentation to [REDACTED] to show that the dishwasher was picked up She purchased a new dishwasher on 5/26/2011 by another manufacturer .
