The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

My dishwasher caught fire while it was running and starting filling my kitchen with smoke. I had to turn it off at the breaker because when I opened the door, it sprayed water everywhere and kept smoking. I inhaled the smoke , my fire alarm went off, and my 1 year old baby was in the house with me and I had to run him outside and leave him alone on the back patio. I now know this dishwasher model was part of a class action settlement for control panels catching fire. Whirlpool Gold dishwasher Model: GU1200XTLQ3 Serial: FR2635952 Type: 575-0

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Eco Series 24-in Top Control Built-in Dishwasher (Fingerprint Resistant Stainless Steel) with third rack, sensory cycle with AI Intelligent wash, soak and clean.

Our whirlpool dishwasher was running a normal wash and dry cycle when we began smelling smoke in our house. After searching for several minutes, we determined it was coming from the dishwasher. A dishwasher-safe plastic lid fell onto the heating element, ignited, and caused a fire inside the dishwasher. The unit was being used for standard household dishwashing. No one was operating it manually as it was mid cycle. There were no injuries. The unit had been installed only 18 days before this happened. The heating element and surrounding area show scorching and melted plastic residue as a result. I have photos documenting the damage. I contacted Whirlpool, they sent a link to the product instruction manual and stated that plastic items falling onto the heating element are not a safety concern. They did not provide a clear resolution other than telling me to scrape off the heating element with a wooden spoon and run a rinse cycle with [REDACTED] dishwasher cleaner.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool dishwasher WTD730HAMS

I have a Whirlpool dishwasher model WTD730HAMZ and the issue is that the control board is defective. This causes the start button to stop working. But even worse it also causes the dishwasher to start on it own. Which is a huge safety issue that could cause harm to my property, injury to my family, or even worse. Whirlpool is aware of this defect and they continue to sell the product with no warning to the consumer. Or they make the consumer cover the cost of repair out our pockets to project their profits.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Dishwasher purchased from Costco

My Whirlpool dishwasher (Model WDT750SAKZ2, purchased February 12, 2025) has developed active rust and peeling paint on the front door panel after approximately 15 months of normal household use. The rusting panel is physically adjacent to the dishwashing interior, creating a plausible risk of rust flaking and metal particle contamination of dishes, cookware, and food-contact surfaces. This is not cosmetic wear it is a material failure of the factory coating on a relatively new appliance. Whirlpool has denied the warranty claim and refused to replace the defective panel. This defect pattern appears consistent with documented complaints on consumer review platforms involving the same model. No abrasive cleaners or chemical solvents were used at any time.

Whirlpool dishwasher model No:WDT730HAMZ1, start the dishwasher by itself repeatedly. Only way to turn it off is turn off at the circuit breaker. We afraid to left the dishwasher on because it may flood the house besides wasting water. Called Whirlpool but they will not covered this issue because it is just outside the manufacturer 1year warranty (we have been this new house 1.5 years now). I told them it is the safety issue because the dishwasher turns itself on and will not stop!! The 1st time happened was 10 or 11 months ago which was with in the 1 year warranty period. We did call Whirlpool because it stopped a day later after we cracked the door open to relieve the moisture inside but now it runs continuously.

My Whirlpool dishwasher would periodically start running its motor on its own. The only way to stop it was to unplug the dishwasher. Whirlpool customer service declared this a safety issue and authorized servicing on my dishwasher that was only 17 months old. The authorized technician concluded the control panel was bad. Even though a control panel is expected to have a 15 year life Whirlpool states if the part was defective it would have been exposed during the one year warranty.

The product, in the report: Product is a Whirlpool dishwasher. Model number and serial number below.

Dishwasher door dropped in a free fall when unlatched, injuring my wife and me. Door dropping resistance stopped working unexpectedly. Although there does not seem to be any sustaining injuries, my concern is this could happen to others and if a small child is hit with the door it could result in serious injury or possibly death. Getting hit by the door was very painful and my wife even developed bruises after being injured.

Whirlpool, dish washer caught fire/ smoke, bad smell. It was a very scary experience. I put a load of dishes in the washer, during the cycle I smelled a harsh smell while cleaning the bathroom upstairs. My 12 year old was downstairs in his online class/ school. The smoke alarms went off , so I ran downstairs and when I saw the smoke coming from the kitchen and pushed through the toxic smell. I ran back upstairs and took of the main breaker for the dishwasher then went back down to drop a soaking rag on the outside of the dishwasher and dumped water. This could have been very , very bad if I was not home. The toxic smell started causing my child to cough throughout the day.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Model WDTA50SAKZ0, ser #FB2302256

I purchased a Whirlpool dishwasher in May of 2021. Within 3 mos, the plastic control panel delaminated as shown in the attached picture and in Nov 2021, various lights started flashing and it stopped working even though it remained energized with the control panel lit. I called service, which came out 3 weeks later, said they didnt have parts. In Feb 2022, the service co came back and replaced the plastic laminate and the control module. 3 weeks later, the plastic laminate on the control panel delaminated again, the control module started flashing and the dishwasher failed again. Service was called, parts were ordered and after 3 weeks, I was informed that parts were not available. Whirlpool called and offered to replace the unit with a similar model claiming the existing model was no longer available. I agreed. The unit was finally replaced on June 14, 2022. The new unit was essentially the same design. Within 3 months, the plastic control panel delaminated in the same way and place and in Jan 2023, the unit started flashing and the replacement dishwasher failed in the same way the previous unit failed. Service was called, it took 3 weeks to get the parts, and in late Feb, the control panel and control module were replaced. About March 15, 2023, only 2 1/2 weeks after the control panel and module were replaced, the control panel delaminated in the same exact place and way as the 3 prior times. I have called Whirlpool several times and told them I believe the design to be defective and dangerous and asked for my money back. I told service I believe the drying cycle drives steam and/or water past the gasket, melting the adhesive on the control panel and this allows water in the form of steam, vapor or liquid to enter the control module cavity, corroding it and shorting it out. Whirlpool customer service told me the 3rd party service co. must come to repair it regardless and they will keep repairing it until the service manager declares the unit to be “nonrepairable”. They have a long case file on my complaint listed under my name, address and telephone number, I was told. I believe the design to be defective and dangerous in that water enters the electrical control components and may cause a fire and or electrocution. The same exact failure has happened 2 times on my unit and 2 times on the replacement unit for a total of 4 times since I purchased the original unit in May 2021. Frankly, I have washed more dishes than this dishwasher has. This cannot be coincidence since it keeps happening in the same place and way across two similar models. The design is defective and dangerous, notwithstanding unfair to unwary consumers who buy these units with the expectation of owning a safe and reliable dishwasher.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher

The consumer indicates that he turned his dishwasher on and approximately one hour later his wife heard a loud noise coming from the kitchen. The consumer´s wife went downstairs and checked on the unit, which she noticed was sparking and smoking. The consumer opened the dishwasher door however it still kept smoking so he removed its cover and noticed that the plug that connects into main control module was burning, arching, and smoking. The consumer immediately switched off the unit´s circuit breaker. The next morning the consumer removed the dishwasher from his kitchen and placed it in his garage.

The consumer contacted the Manufacturer and explained the situation, also noting that the dishwasher is now irreparable.; the representative he spoke to informed him that they would still like to send a service technician to perform a diagnostic test on it.

The consumer states the unit was used once daily.

The consumer is unsure if he will keep his dishwasher for at least the next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.

Our Whirlpool dishwasher, Model # GU1100XTLQ1, Serial # FP3815889 started on fire last night. The main control board in the door was the culprit. Lots of smoke, and the fire scorched the edge of the countertop above the unit. We luckily were home and not asleep. This is a very dangerous product! My entire family could have been killed!

After opening the control panel I found that the main control board blackened.

Our dishwasher has slowly adjusted and shook itself to undeveloped. My husband pulled it out to fix it, and we have a huge problem. The vent for the dishwasher was covered by the insulation provided by the manufacturer. However, since it vents on the side, and is covered, there is no air movement. Due to that, we now have mold on our cabinets, and the moisture has made it to the floor, warping our hardwood floor. There has been enough moisture to warp our custom made cabinet, so we cannot adjust the height of the shelf. This is not ok! It’s a HUGE health concern, just for the mold!!!!! This dishwasher had nowhere to vent!!

I had pressed the START button of my dishwasher and went into another room. After about 5-10 minutes, my lights kept flickering on and off and I was hearing a very loud grinding noise. My husband went to investigate and found the dishwasher smoking heavily and there was a bad burning smell. He opened the dishwasher to stop it and I turned off the circuit breaker and we grabbed our fire extinguisher. We checked everywhere for signs of a fire while the front of the dishwasher was still smoking, but not on fire. It took awhile to get the door off of the dishwasher to remove from the house and when we removed the front panel, we saw the wires and plastic were black and melted.

We have a Whirlpool dishwasher which I would estimate is between 5-10 years old. Model #WDT710PAYM4. We were washing a typical load of dishes when we began to notice a strong burning odor in the area. When we determined it was coming from the dishwasher we shut it down and contacted an appliance repairman. Upon inspection, the control board inside the door had been badly burned, with the inside of the board compartment appearing blackend. The compartment itself appears to have begun to melt. Fortunately we were nearby and able to shut off the machine before a fire was able to spread further. There were no other electrical issues in the home at the time, and no apparent cause outside of the machine itself.

We were running a load in our dishwasher last night and it was towards the end of the cycle that we noticed a burning smell. We opened the dishwasher and looked in to make sure something plastic had not fallen down and was burning. There was nothing. Then smoke started coming out of the door of the dishwasher and it was extremely hot to the touch. The room started to fill with smoke and a smell of something electrical burning. We grabbed our fire extinguisher and sprayed the dishwasher. We then called 911. The fire department arrived within minutes and turned off the breaker to the dishwasher. They came into the house and checked to make sure the fire was out and nothing behind the dishwasher in the cabinet was showing heat or fire. They proceeded to pull out the dishwasher and felt and monitored the heat coming from the door. They opened the door panels and discovered the faulty wire to the control panel was the cause of the fire and destruction of the dishwasher.

On 11/06/2012 I bought Whirlpool Dishwasher. On 02/23/19 at about 11:30pm my wife smelled something burning a heavy plastic smell, we ran downstairs to find our dishwasher had smoke coming out from the control panel under the start button. We opened the door and then unplugged the dishwasher to stop the melting of the plastic and smoke. I called Whirlpool on 02/25/19 to report the incident. Whirlpool took my information and told me that my model number was not a recall and there was nothing they could do for me. The next day, I removed the dishwasher from our home and placed it outside for garbage pick up due to the intense stench of burnt wiring and plastic.

I installed the dishwasher the night before and ran it once without incident. The next day as I was shaving my wife called out my name and I ran into the kitchen to find her lying on he floor near the dishwasher with her eyes red and tearing. She appeared to be dizzy and disoriented. She said she just passed out. She said she opened the dishwasher because the light was white to indicate it is finished and she breathed in the vapors which overcame her causing her lungs and throat to burn and she passed out and fell to the ground.

I opened the dishwasher and the fumes were overwhelming burning my eyes, throat, and nose. It resembled the smell of nitro methane top fuel dragster exhaust. I let the fumes clear out then removed the lower rack. I found plastic melted onto the exposed heating element as well as a plastic piece of the upper rack on top of the filter the same color as the melted plastic. The pieces came from the upper rack roller end stop and the folding finger holders. Opening the dishwasher 5 hours later the smell remains but is no longer overwhelming.

The use of poorly secured plastic parts above an exposed heating element is a poor design which can lead to inhalation poisonous gases and possible consequential injury from falling. I believe that this is caused by a common dishwasher design flaw. Having an open heating element. Even if all the parts in the washer were metal there is still a risk of a person in a rush putting a bowl with a plastic wrapper or alike in the washer. I think there should be some government regulation preventing the use of an exposed heating element in a dishwasher to protect consumers.

In the early morning of 10/15/2018 we used this appliance to wash dishes. In the morning we found the outer housing of the dishwasher in the area of the control panel (which is also the area where when the dishwasher vents heated air during the drying cycle) fractured along with an area in lower portion of the outer housing fractured. The housing was still in a locked position but in addition, hot water had dumped on the kitchen wood floor and on the large throw rug in the kitchen area as well. The product, in the report: Whirlpool dishwasher under the counter, black model number GU2500XTPB1, serial number FR3801705.

This past Thursday evening 27 September 2018, our dishwasher circuit board exploded and started burning. There were no active flames but there was a lot of smoke. We were unable to start the dishwasher cycle without shutting off the circuit at the circuitboard. The dishwasher is a Whirlpool that have been recalled because of a heater motor problem in 2005. We participated in the recall and had the part repaired on18 July 2005 but didn’t know about the class action lawsuit.

In checking the websites there are many reports of the circuit boards bursting into flames or exploding but there has been no recall on the circuit boards. The model number of our dishwasher starts with G you too and the serial number is FR3801705 it was purchased on 13 November 2004 and installed on 16 November 2004.

I just want other people to know about their propensity for these circuit boards to explode and/or burst into flames. We often left the house with the dishwasher running. Not going that we could’ve come home to a burned down house. I feel there should be some action taken by either the consumer product safety division of the government and/or the manufacturer who has been advised of this previously according to the attorney for the class-action lawsuit for the defective motors and by various news agencies that have reported this. The manufacturer, whirlpool, has our information as they mailed us a copy of the first recall back on 8 July 2005.

We did have the fire department come to our home to ensure there was no active fire or hotspots. The firemen were present when I removed the face of the dishwasher and exposed the circuitboard where we discovered it had melted.

The submitter set the unit to a normal wash cycle and while he was in the living he smelled a burn odor. He walked into the kitchen and noticed it was coming from the unit. He indicated that the lights on the control panel were off. He opened the door and noticed water on the bottom. He also saw flames near the side of the unit and immediately contacted the fire department. He used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire. The fire fighters arrived shortly after and they removed the unit because there was still a fire risk.

The submitter said there are burn damages inside the unit, on the side and the floor was damaged while the unit was hauled outside.

He contacted the firm and reported the incident (M-18-237243). He was told that his unit was not recalled and they would not assist with any replacements or compensation for property damages.

The submitter also contacted his home insurance company and filed a claim. They have issued him a check but they told him his monthly premium will be going up and he is not sure whether he will return the check to them.

She turned off the breaker and the Fire Department was called to insure there was no fire in the walls or other areas near the dishwasher. Fire Department LT said to have our breaker checked by an electricion because he said it did not work. Do not believe he is trained as a Fire Investigator since, as soon as this start the breaker was turned off and it did not have time to burn the power wires at which time the breaker then should have tripped. Also I checked the is in good condition.

Whirlpool WDF780SLYB0 dishwasher lower rack wheel, fell off and melted on to heating element. This has happened twice. The first time I caught it a year ago or so, as it happened and shut the machine down due to the odor. I ordered and replaced two wheel bracket assemblies. This time it happened as we slept and I awoke this morning to a house filled with an acrid odor. I do not know if the failed wheel this time was from an original bracket or a replacement bracket. Currently all four brackets are bent outward at the outside wheel. Potential hazard could be the fumes from the plastic melting / burning. Some dark powder residue was present when I cleaned the wheel off of the heating element, the amount of wheel remaining suggests no major fire. (have pictures of bracket and melted wheel could not upload)

While my dishwasher was in use, towards the end of the wash cycle, the dishwasher started making “popping” noises and black smoke started to pour out if the latch used to open the dishwasher door. The noise stopped after 5-10 seconds but smoke continued to pour out of the machine. I did open the door to see if something was on the heating element causing the smoke. I could see flames inside the door to the dishwasher. The flames were contained to the inside of the door between the front amd back panels. The door is white and I could clearly see flames for a few seconds before I went to turn off the circuit breaker, which had already tripped before I got to it. The smoke stopped c a short time later. The only damage was to the dishwasher. There were no injuries or property damage as a result of this incident.

On September 10, 2017, I was running our Whirlpool Gold Dishwasher. I left the room and went upstairs. My family all smelled a very strong burning electrical odor throughout our entire house. I ran downstairs and the strong odor was coming from the dishwasher. It started making crackling noises, so my husband immediately turned it off, then ran down into our basement to shut off the electricity to the appliance. The hot electrical odor was very overpowering. We first dragged the built in dishwasher out, then disconnected it from the water supply and power before dragging it outside still filled with dishes and water. The dishwasher had gotten so hot, it had warped the oak veneer glued to the plywood side of the cabinetry housing it.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Dishwasher - Model WDF760SADW2

SAFETY / HEALTH CONCERN – resulting from a PRODUCT DEFECT – Black Fungus/Mold/Yeast accumulation within Whirlpool Dishwasher (MOD: WDF760SADW2, SER: F53807396). Note – I am providing this information as a Licensed Professional Engineer, Concerned Consumer, and having previous experience in the design, development and testing consumer dishwashers and other consumer appliances. I have attempted to report this to the Manufacturer (Whirlpool) and it is obvious they do not have processes in place to recognize the potential severity and significance and take appropriate actions. This is a summary of my experience with a Whirlpool dishwasher and an extreme case of persistent black fungus/mold/yeast growth on every internal surface that is the result of a product design DEFECT. This occurred gradually over a period of at least several months, although as you’ll read – it is not possible to determine exactly when the defective operation started. And as I describe below, it is obvious the root cause is within the design of the dishwasher and control, resulting in a potentially very hazardous condition with no clear and obvious warning indication to user. I have attempted to communicate this issue through the Whirlpool consumer product help line – the method with text message format, and received a poor response indicating Whirlpool has little interest in understanding the potential severity of this issue. We did not have samples biologically tested, hence we do not know the specific name of it – during cleaning – it is obviously a part of the fungus (mushroom, yeast) family – you can look at the pictures and search the internet. Let me be clear – the DEFECT is the product’s design that disables the heating circuit with no warning indication to the user. The resulting unsanitary condition is the true hazard, which is a direct (and should be a reasonably expected) consequence of the Design DEFECT. Specifically, Whirlpool Dishwasher model WDF760SADW2 purchased approximately 2 two years ago from a retail outlet and installed by the retail outlet ‘factory trained’ installers – the model and serial can be read from the attached picture “Whirlpool_ID.JPG” . The DEFECT is that the appliance’s control contains a mode that will permanently disable the heating circuit and provide no warning or indication to the user. The result of this DEFECT is that inadequate water heating and drying is occurring, and in my case subsequent and significant black mold/yeast growth is fostered / not prevented. Our water heater setting delivers 125 degree F water to an adjacent sink, and to the dishwasher during extended wash cycles; but as with any American household there are surely times when the supplied water is significantly lower temperature (e.g. multiple kids taking baths and showers, laundry, etc.). This dishwasher was professionally installed, and was also serviced under warranty approximately 9 months ago – the technician indicated everything was working properly and suggested we use [REDACTED] and or [REDACTED] to remove deposits that at the time we did not recognize as this black fungus/mold – neither [REDACTED] nor [REDACTED] had any apparent effect at that time or later. As with most households, the ridiculously long wash/rinse/heat dry cycles of 2 to 4 hours or more make it unlikely for a user to recognize that the dishwasher is not properly heating the water or drying. We had noticed that for quite some time, the filters required frequent cleaning of what appeared to be soap buildup. Please see the attached photos – NOTE – all of these pictures we’re taken after we had scrubbed and removed the majority of black mold from the inside of the tub and doors. Picture titled “Spray_Manifold.jpg” is the upper rack spray arm manifold, an area where all the water for the upper rack spray arm circulates – the black deposits are mold growth with thickness up to ¼” thick – that are present in the internal water circulation path leading to the spray arm. Picture titled “Rack_Wheels.jpg” shows the accumulation/growth on the outside of the upper rack wheel assemblies – the wheels have a 1/4 inch deep groove in them that was also filled with black mold growth. Pictured titled “Whirlpool_ID” shows the nameplate label with Model and Serial number and adjacent to the label you can see the black mold growth on the inside of the dishwasher tub and on the rack slide hardware. After spending many hours over several days/weeks running cycles using all of the recommended ‘dishwasher cleaners’ [e.g. [REDACTED], [REDACTED], White Vinegar, [REDACTED], [REDACTED], and even commercial cleaning solutions] all to no effect, it became obvious that at least part of the issue was that the water was not being adequately heated, and the ‘heated dry’ cycle appeared inadequate as well. I’ll also add that we used these consumer and commercial cleaners at their ‘recommended’ quantities AND at quantities 2X and 3X all with minimal visible effects. However, during much of the testing – including normal cycles, with the dishwasher empty we did observe that a bowl placed wrong-side-up in the top rack would fill with water during the wash cycle and have a significant – ½ to 1 teaspoon of black fungus/mold settled in the bottom of the bowl at the end of the cycle – proving that this black fungus/mold was being circulated through, onto and over what we expected to be clean dishes, eating utensils and cookware. The presence of small amounts of debris at the end of wash cycles has been significantly reduced and appears to be slowly diminishing after more than a dozen HEATED wash, rinse and dry cycles. The end solution – and why this is CLEARLY A PRODUCT DEFECT – following the manufacturer’s instructions for performing diagnostic checks, I found that the electronic control had logged an operating/user error – F7 E1 – indicating that the heater had been disabled, this fault can indicate a faulting heating circuit – or – apparently it can indicate that the heater cycle did not work during a wash cycle. The error code permanently disabled the heater circuit and provided no warning or indication. The dishwasher ‘diagnostic mode’ indicated no error within the heating circuit, but the user mode error code persisted. Cycling power (via circuit breaker) did not reset this error code. And – after checking components, and finding everything appeared okay, I was able to erase that error code – and the heating circuit worked, and has continued to work normally through a dozen or more cycles after the error was cleared. The dishwasher has ran two dozen or more cycles after the error code was cleared, and since then the heater cycle appears to function as normal/expected, and the user error code has not reappeared. The rest of solution – entailed many hours of disassembling everything removable, soaking and then scrubbing with a sterilizing solution of bleach; during which time we found that basically every nook and cranny of every part and assembly inside the dishwasher was covered and/or filled with a layer of black mold with thickness of 1/8 to ¼ inch more. For example – mold was present inside the detergent and rinse aid dispensers, and inside the The dishwasher tub is Stainless Steel – since bleach can damage low grades of stainless steel we used a combination of cleaning spray and aerosol foaming cleaners plus much scrubbing to clean the stainless steel tub and door parts. For the moment, the dishwasher appears visually clean and the heater circuit appears to work and the amount of post-wash organic debris with the dishwasher empty has been greatly diminished. He had no problems with the unit until Monday, January 2, 2017 when his wife started the dishwasher, called him because she smelled an odd odor. He came upstairs immediately but in that time the dishwasher was emitting black smoke with blue flame coming from the front. The flames were around two or three inches coming out of the unit. The caller said that blue flames identify electrical fire. There are no injuries being reported He contacted the manufacturer the same day and he was referred to their website for an online web session.

We went to bed with the dishwasher on its Delay Start Mode / Pots and Pans.

When we awoke in the morning, the cycle had only partially run -- the dishes were not fully cleaned. The dishwasher controls were unresponsive so I checked its circuit breaker--it was still on.

Tried again to start the dishwasher but it was dead.

Opened up the dishwasher’s control panel to look for a blown fuse and discovered that its main circuit board had caught fire during the night.

Transistor Q2 appeared to have failed as it was scorched.

The cable harnesses to the circuit board were melted.

The circuit board was severely burnt, both front and back.

The flexible ribbon cable that passed underneath the board had melted and 2 of its metal traces had fused themselves to the plastic circuit board enclosure and burned right through it.

Molten plastic had dripped down to the bottom of the plastic casing and left a plume of soot upwards and throughout the top of the casing.

I presume that the dishwasher’s thermal cutoff (located in an opening on the top side of the plastic circuit board casing) had sensed the heat from the fire and cut the power to the dishwasher before the fire spread.

After opening the dishwasher to investigate, the kitchen was filled with an acrid burning plastic smell that lasted several days.

Normal load of dishes. At approximately the end of wash cycle, black smoke started coming from steam vent. The smoke smelled like an electrical fire. I was able to turn off circuit at fuse box before fire burned beyond the interior of the front door of the dishwasher. Before turning off power, I could hear electrical arcing inside the front panel. Had I not been standing next to the dishwasher when this began, I expect that the fire would have continued.

Our Whirlpool Gold 3 Dishwasher Model GU2400-XTPB (bought in 2004 ) started making loud popping sounds, followed by sparks and smoke from melting plastic and electronic components on the control board during a dish-washing cycle. We had to manual turn of the circuit breaker to stop the dishwasher and the board from continuing burning. When talking to Whirlpool Customer Service we were told that it is normal that a dishwasher fails in that manner. We kindly disagree since the burning was only stopped by us disabling the electric circuit, sparks and flames were clearly visible in front of the dishwasher and the fault could have caused greater damage to our kitchen and house if we would not have intervened.

Caller is reporting that the Whirlpool Dishwasher purchased approximately 6 months ago has very sharp edges all around and that sometime around April 4th, 2015 she was loading the dishwasher she walked around the door, brushed against the door somewhere near one of the corners.

She called a cab and went to Englewood Hospital Emergency Room where she received stitches but she doesn’t know how many. She describes the amount of stitches as “a lot”. She was prescribed 500mg Cephalexin antibiotic to be taken one each day.

She said that there was a chunk out of her left leg midway between her ankle and her knee approximately one and one half inches square.

She has seen a dermatologist three times and she has another appointment in about one week.

He has advised her that he is trying to avoid infection so he has instructed her to keep putting putting lukewarm compresses on the sight and change the dressing twice each day.

She is stating that there should be rubber around the door which would cover the sharp edges.

She contacted the manufacturer April 20th, 2015, told them why she was calling then she was advised that someone would call her to arrange for someone to be sent to look at her door but there was no one there at that time who could assist her but that she could call again later for a manager.

The consumer stated that there was an electrical fire odor through the house. The consumer stated that he smelled this for about 4 uses before realizing that the source of the odor was the dishwasher.

The consumer stated that the 4th time they smelled the odor, white/gray smoke filled up the house. The consumer stated that the electrical burn odor also filled up the whole house.

The consumer stated he was unable to turn off the unit from the control panel. The consumer opened the door to shut it off. The consumer cut the circuit to the dishwasher.

The consumer stated that he contacted the manf. They sent out a technician to inspect in January. The technician stated that there was an issue in a switch (on the right hand side of the panel). The consumer was informed by representative that they can get a new dishwasher for 30% off. The consumer stated that the representative asked him to return the dishwasher.

The unit is not included in recall # 05-123.

The consumer added they currently are gathering sufficient funds to purchase the new product. The consumer noted the heating bills and severity of the winter are draining their reserves; so, they shall be able to work on credit at the end of March. The consumer also added being disabled, a working dishwasher would be very welcomed with 4 months having already passed.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool dishwasher - purchased 2008 model GU2275XTVQ1

My Whirlpool dishwasher - model GU2275XTVQ1 serial FY5002598 developed a hole through the bottom of the plastic tub. The whole appears to be the result of the plastic melting just under the heating element. There was no contact between the tub and heating element. Whirlpool repair technician (sent by the company) listed the incident as “no apparent cause...”

Whirlpool Safety division acknowledged that the report indicates my machine can not be repaired (actually the tech. only said the tub could not be repaired). Whirlpool initually offered me 20% of another Whirlpool product. They went to 30% upon my complaint of the offer being far off base considering the danger that the machine caused in my home. I refused this offer and requested a damage claim sheet, which they emailed to me.

Today I received a call from Whirlpool (another person) offering me $250 for the loss of my 4 year old machine. I have not accepted this offer at this time.

They also wanted me to return the old machine, which I’m afraid has something to do with concealing the defect.

I am seriously concerned about this problem causing a fire for another family. Please let me know if I need to provide pictures to help you realize the seriousness of this defect. The whole narrowly missed dumping gallons of water across the electrical connections. The water narrowly missed my electrical panel in my basement as well.

approximately 20 min. after starting Whirlpool dishwasher the control panel started to burn, smoke and sickening odor. I found it burning probably within a few minutes, the working smoke detectors had not yet gone off. There was no damage or burning inside the dishwasher itself, just the control panel. Because it was the control panel it would not turn off, door had to be left open until electricity could be turned off and wiring to dishwasher cut-it was a built-in hardwired dishwasher. No injuries, just nausea from the odor, house aired out.

Our dishwasher started on fire this week. There was a noise, followed by a burning smell from the door. Shortly thereafter, there was a small flame visible from the top of the door briefly. Luckily we were home, near the dishwasher and were able to put it out immediately. I hesitate to think what would have happened otherwise.

Our dishwasher (Whirlpool model #GU2500XTPB6, serial FS3402527) shows a manufacturing date of 8/19/05 on the back. This appears similar (or identical) to a recall Whirlpool had the same year regarding the control panel. However, our serial number is not on the recall list, although other GU2500 units were.

Having an appliance stop working after 8 years can be disappointing, but not entirely unexpected. Having an appliance start on fire and risk my family’s safety and our entire home is completely unacceptable. I can only hope that reporting it helps others.

On Saturday, April 19, 2014, my dishwasher started to smoke and caught fire. I started the dishwasher just minutes (10 minutes at most) before this occurred. The smoke appeared first; it was black. Immediately after the smoke was noticed, flames were seen shooting out from above and below the control panel. The door was immediately opened. This stopped the burning/fire. The breaker switch was manually turned off as well. Quick thinking prevented my house from catching fire. Luckily, we were home and awake. I usually run the dishwasher when we go to bed or as we are leaving for the day. The result could have been deadly and would have absolutely been more destructive than a defunct dishwasher.

On the evening of April 4th 2013 I was cooking dinner and running the dishwasher in my home. My husband smelled smoke and ran into the kitchen. I turned around to see that the dishwasher was profusely smoking. We were very alarmed. My husband opened the door on the dishwasher to stop the cycle but it did not stop. The dishwasher continued to operate with the door open. The spray arm was slinging water around onto the floor. I tried to close the dishwasher door but because the floor was wet and the dishwasher was smoking/malfunctioning I was worried about standing in water while touching it. There was a lot of very smelly smoke. I did press the stop/cancel/drain button on the control panel and the lights on the control panel indicated that it was responding but the dishwasher continued to operate slinging water with the door open. My husband ran to the garage and turned off the breaker. The dishwasher stopped running but continued to smoke. After the dishwasher cooled off and stopped smoking my husband removed some screws and moved it away from the wall and unplugged it just to be safe. The unit was not repaired by replaced.

Woke to the smell of hot/burning plastic and a haze of smoke. Same smell, but less intense, had been present on an earlier morning. Fire department came, and we narrowed down the source to the dishwasher. Water remained in the bottom of the tub, but none of the indicator lights were on, and all of the buttons were dead.

Turned off the circuit breaker and opened the front panel. There were scorch marks on the outside of the control panel, and wholesale burned and melted plastic inside. The connector had burned away and melted on to lower components and the inside of the control panel enclosure and the circuit board were both blackened/charred. There was heavy smoke residue above the melted/charred connector and components, heat yellowing of the outside panel directly adjacent to the burned components, and traces of smoke around the vent near the burned components.

Dishwasher was running at the time of the incident (set to run on delay mode), but had stopped working mid-run, as there was water still in the bottom of the tub.

Wife loaded dishwasher with dirty dishes, added detergent, closed door and pushed normal cycle button, no heat dry option. A few minutes later she noticed a burning plastic smell. Returning to the kitchen where the odor was strongest, she opened the dishwasher door which normally stops operation - the machine kept running, and smoke was coming out of vents at the top of the door. She yelled for me to flip the circuit breaker off and bring the fire extinguisher just in case. We both observed the machine for several minutes, seeing no additional smoke or apparent flames. We then opened the windows to clear the odor from the house. The next morning , since the appliance was out of warranty, I disassembled the door/control panel area to discover that the circuit board for the control was scorched and burnt at one end with partially melted connecting plugs. We de-installed the machine and removed it from the house....

    There have been no injuries.

He contacted the manufacturer and spoke with [REDACTED]in customer service [REDACTED]and to [REDACTED] in the safety department , [REDACTED].

A technician is scheduled to inspect the dishwasher Monday, May 13th, 2013 between 1PM and 5PM at no charge to the consumer so that the manufacturer will know what the problem is that caused the smoke.

Dishwasher caught fire ; Caller purchased her dishwasher in May 2001 and had no problems with it until April 30th, 2013 around 8 o’clock when she started the dishwasher then went upstairs to take her shower.

Approximately twenty minutes after starting the dishwasher and during her shower she began smelling a burning odor, she grabbed her robe and returned downstairs to find that her dishwasher had been on fire and that her entire downstairs level of her home was filled with black smoke.

There were holes burned through the area where the controls had been and the front of the dishwasher was blackened.

She contacted the manufacturer May 1st, 2013 and a tech was sent to her home, said that her dishwasher was not fixable and then took the front portion off to show her that her wires were burned.

The Bureau of Consumer Protection referred caller to CPSC

She believes that the breaker may have tripped which removed power from the dishwasher and so extinguished the fire.

She also stated that if this had not happened she believes that her home could very well have burned down and if she had not smelled the burning and had not known to get out of the shower it could have been tragic.

At 9 pm, December 31, 2012, my wife turned on the whirlpool gold dishwasher and then went to go take a shower. As I watched tv in the adjoining family room I smelled burning plastic, turned and saw much smoke billowing in the kitchen. I ran to the unit to turn it off, but the control panel was not working. I screamed for my son to watch it (and spray water on it if flames erupt...) and ran to the master circuit control panel and shut it off from there. It took days for the burnt plastic smell to dissipate from the home interiors. We stopped the unit before it burnt through the control panel to involve any other structure. The wife normally runs the dishwasher after we go to bed. We are thankful to God that this time we were home and awake! We have removed the burnt unit and put it in storage for future reference if needed.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher

Caller loaded dishwasher on Christmas Afternoon, started it and was standing in the kitchen talking with her family when they heard an explosion inside the dishwasher.

Flames that measured approximately two feet high began coming out of the control panel then extinguished but were followed by slight black smoke. The unit continued to run as if it were washing the dishes.

Caller’s husband turned off the dishwasher, flipped the breaker and water supply off to the unit.

After about twenty minutes the callers husband reconnected everything, started the dishwasher but although it was running it still smelled like burned wiring. They disconnected power, water then unplugged the dishwasher and have ordered a new replacement dishwasher which they would ask for reimbursement or partial reimbursement of from the manufacturer at manufacturer expense.

Callers have not contacted the manufacturer but do intend to contact them. No injuries are being reported.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher

The consumer says that the dishwasher stopped working. The cords are burned out underneath and could have caught fire. She cleaned it one day and the next time she tried to use it, it would not work. There was no smoke emitting from it nor any smell.

The consumer contacted the manufacturer about two weeks ago who stated the unit is not on recall and their is nothing they can do. They advised that the product is safe.

The consumer hired a home warranty company who inspected the unit and deemed it unsafe to use. She says she had the front panel was replaced about two years ago by an authorized dealer for the manufacturer.
