The product, in the report: Under counter GE Profile stainless steel tub dishwasher
On Saturday, May 31, I was using my GE Profile dishwasher with the heated cycle. I was outside working in the yard when I returned to the house, there was a strong odor of something very hot/melting. We searched the house and came to determine that the dishwasher was so hot that it melted several plastic items on the top rack of the dishwasher. These items had been washed and dried previously with no problems. My husband immediately unplugged the dishwasher. A large plastic bowl melted and is stuck to the top shelf. A plastic cup is completely melted into the wash spinners, inside the stainless steel tub and the heating element. On Monday, I looked at the General Electric appliance web site and noted that there was a recall for plastic tub GE profile dishwashers because the heating element overheated and caused damage. Those dishwashers were made in the same time frame as my dishwasher - 2007. There was no recall on stainless steel tub GE profile dishwashers which I own. Therefore I was not notified of any recall. However, it seems that my heating element overheated as well. GE has been contacted. The cabinet and sink near the dishwasher were both very hot when touched as a result of the overheating the dishwasher.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher Model - pdw7880n10ss Serial - ar808641b
Our GE Profile dishwasher (stainless steel outside and plastic tub inside) would not end the heated dry cycle yesterday. It was stuck and this morning our house smelled of burnt plastic - which led us to discover the problem. This is the same model subject to a 2012 recall, and it was “fixed” in August of 2012. We are very concerned that this fire hazard risk is not fixed. The unit was too hot to touch and the counter was also hot. We are not interested in another fix because the first repair did not work. I have submitted a complaint to GE as well.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
Caller stated that the dishwasher was placed into cycle, however, after the cycle was completed the heating element stayed on overnight which caused melting to some of her dishwasher safe utensils. In the morning when she opened the door for the dishwasher it was still emitting heat and she realized that it was still on. The unit’s control panel failed to cancel the operation and the circuit breaker was used the switch the power off.
The manufacturer was not contacted yet.
She is concerned that this dishwasher is a fire hazard and should be recalled.
The product is not part of a recall.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher. Model #PDW9980L00SS. Serial #ML887882B purchased in October of 2006
On January 28, 2014, the heating element failed to turn off at the end if a dish washing speed cycle. The dishwasher is a GE Profile model# PDW9980L00SS purchased in October 2006. My family was asleep. I awoke to the smell of burning plastic. All of the plastic dishes/cups were completely melted -- some were flattened out completely they were so melted. The blades of the dishwasher themselves were melted. The only way to turn the heating element off was to cut power to the dishwasher. Smoke was billowing out if the dishwasher and my entire home was filled with the smell of burning plastic.

The product, in the report: Model number: PDW9280L00SS Serial number: LL766905B
On Saturday December 28th, our GE Profile dishwasher melted and nearly burned. The serial number is LL766905B. More details below. I turned on the dishwasher mid-afternoon using the same method of stacking the dishes, same type of detergent, and same cleaning settings we have used for the past six years. In the early evening I noticed that the machine was still washing, but did not recognize that the device was broken. It did strike me as odd though. I returned to the kitchen in the late evening (11pm) and immediately noticed the very strong smell and higher temperature in the room. There was significant smoke coming from the device, and the granite counter top above the dishwasher was too hot to touch. Had I not returned to the kitchen I have little doubt that there would have been a fire. The internal plastic parts of the dishwasher melted, our dishes now have cracks, the cutlery is also covered in blackened plastic.
Please contact me to discuss the event and next steps. I may be reached by cell phone at [REDACTED] or by email [REDACTED] I have taken photos of the damaged dishwasher.
Below is a copy of the output from the GE web site that lists recalled devices. Our dishwasher is not included in the list of recalled units that exhibit the same problem, but it does match the first two letters of the serial number of recalled devices on your website. http://www.geappliances.com/products/recall/dishwasher_2012/outcome1.htm?MODELNUMBER=PDW9280L00SS&SERIALNUMBER=LL766905B

The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher
I own a GE Profile Dishwasher model PDW9880N00SS, serial number AM762945B. On Friday, December 27, we loaded and started the dishwasher about 3 p.m. At about 6 p.m. my daughter opened the dishwasher to take out silverware to use for dinner with guests. The steam that rushed out was scalding hot and caused her cheeks to immediately turn red. She used a towel to remove the silverware and closed the door. At approximately 7:30 p.m. while serving appetizers to guests we noticed a burning smell coming from the kitchen. We finally located to smell and found the plastic containers on in the dishwasher melted and dripped onto the element, washing arm, and the bottom rack. The temperature within the dishwasher was in excess of 350 degrees. We attempted to over-ride the cycle by pressing the cancel button on the top panel to no avail. The dishwasher would not turn off. We immediately unplugged the power cord and left the door open to cool the remaining dishes that were on the racks. The counter above the dishwasher was scalding and it took nearly an hour for the dishes to cool to a point that they could be removed. I am very concerned that this could have started a fire if it would have been running overnight.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher Model
I have GE Profile PDW8680N00SS dishwasher. I started a cycle at 10:00PM last night before going to the bed. When I woke up at around 5:30AM, I smelled a horrible smell of burnt plastic. I figured out that its coming from the dishwasher. As I opened the door to the dishwasher smoke came bellowing out of it. This was not just any smoke, it felt really toxic, made our eye tear up and you could see smoke through out the house. Keep in mind the washer had been turned on more than 7 hours earlier.. what if we didn’t wake up? The granite counter was so hot that you can get burnt just by touching it. The heater inside still kept pushing heat even when the door was open. I had to disconnect the power to dishwasher for it to stop pumping heat.
All the plastic-ware inside were melted. Any part of the dishwasher that was plastic had melted too (spray arm at the bottom, the rack where we keep spoons and forks and even the front control melted and was bent inwards)
This is a real fire hazard and it was a scary situation to see all the smoke come out. My model was the GE Profile with the stainless steel interior, GE has already recalled another model from the same batch that has a plastic interior. So they told me its not part of a recall even though the problem that triggered recall on plastic model is exactly the same. This is not an isolated case - other people have reported same melting (fire hazard) on this stainless-steel model. Its high time that GE recall this model before somebody gets seriously injured.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
Caller purchased her dishwasher sometime in the Spring of 2007 and had no problems with it until around the week of October 14th, 2013 when she loaded it and started it. When it became quiet she thought that all the cycles had completed and went to bed.
The caller’s husband woke up around 2:00AM, went downstairs and smelled something burning, he followed the odor to the dishwasher, opened the door to the unit, felt that it was very hot inside. He saw that the heating element had become so hot that it melted the callers [REDACTED] knives and the plastic mixing portion of her food processor and a plastic cup.
The caller is reporting due to the extreme heat indicating that if her husband had not woken up this could have resulted in a house fire with property and human damage.
There are no injuries being reported
Caller has not contacted the manufacturer but does intend to contact them.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher, Stainless Steel exterior and interior
Dishwasher dry cycle did not shut off following end of cycle resulting in melting of the silverware basket, utensils with plastic handles, the plastic parts of the lower water spray bar, and several plastic items on the top rack. The granite counter top and the adjacent cabinet walls were extremely hot to the touch, but no damage is visible on the cabinets. This is the second incident of this type that has occurred on this exact same model. I reported the previous incident to CPSC on Oct 12, 2008, and CPSC contacted GE, and their investigation determined that the dishwasher was not repairable and they replaced it with the same model, the one that I am reporting. Since this is the second incident of this type on the same model, it leads me to suspect a design defect and I believe a recall would be warranted. If I have experienced two incidents, there are undoubtedly many others out there with similar experiences. The fortunate thing is that we have been at home when both incidents occurred so we were able to intervene and turn off the dishwasher before something worse, like fire, happened.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
Caller is reporting that around 1:00PM on June 24th, 2013 she started her dishwasher on light wash then began preparing for the evening out with her husband to celebrate their daughters graduation. She and her husband returned around 9:45PM spent time with their daughter while she opened gifts. June 25th, 2013 caller’s husband woke, went to the kitchen and noticed that the counter was very hot. He opened the dishwasher, saw that the red light was lit on the door and the fan was running. He woke his wife around 7:00AM then they both returned to the kitchen and began trying to turn the dishwasher off. They have no idea how it finally turned off but after pushing button after button it finally stopped running. The callers estimate that the dishwasher had been running around 15 hours. Caller has searched CPSC releases and said that her dishwasher was having the same issues as those recalled with release# 12-244, she is reporting this dishwasher as a severe fire hazard. She has noted that if she and her husband had just left the house and not been in the kitchen to notice the dishwasher still running from the day before then she may have returned to a burned out house.
Caller has not contacted the manufacturer but does intend to contact them, she has contacted a repair person. She is asking that this model of dishwasher be included in the recalls and that she be reimbursed any monies paid out for repair at manufacturer expense.

The product, in the report: Ge profile stainless steel dishwasher
At approximately9pm on may 21 2013 I ran my dishwasher. At approximately 2am I woke up to the smell of something burning. After checking my entire house I realized the dishwasher door was too hot to touch. I opened the dishwasher to find all the plastic cups in the dishwasher had been melted into puddles of liquid . It appeared the heating element had malfunctioned after the cycle was complete. I unplugged the dishwasher and left it open to cool. Unfortunately my house smells like melted plastic. Luckily I woke up to resolve the problem before it caught on fire

No one hurt Made Apr 16, 2013, sent to the company Apr 24, 2013, published by CPSC May 8, 2013
The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher. Exterior is white and the interior is stainless steel. it is installed under the counter. The model number will give the manufacturer all of the pertinent information.
This concerns a GE Profile Dishwasher (Model: PDW8600N00WW; Serial No: RM793860B). The dishwasher was run Sun, 4/14/13 in the evening around 8:00 PM. My wife ran it and I did not know when it had been started. The next morning around 7:00 AM, I opened the dishwasher to retrieve a few dishes to use as part of preparing a quick breakfast for my son. I noticed that the dishes were very hot and there was no residual moisture on the tops of the glasses and cups. I also removed the silverware tray from the bottom. The silverware was extremely hot to the touch, and was hotter than I could pick up and hold onto without immediately letting go to keep from burning my hand. I had to dump it out onto the counter to cool so I could get what I needed. At this point, I thought my wife had started the dishwasher early in the morning and that it was just finishing up. I could not, however, explain why there was a total lack of moisture/steam as normally would be the case when opening it right after completing the cleaning cycle and the dishes are still hot. I shut the door to the dishwasher and left to take a shower and finish getting ready. When we came downstairs to leave, I could smell burned or melted plastic and immediately went over to the dishwasher. I opened it up and it was still very hot, but this time there was a red substance over several of the dishes in the lower shelf and there were fibrous strings connected between the shelves. I knew something had melted, but didn’t have time to investigate, so I left the dishwasher door open and switched off the electrical power to the unit. When I returned home in the evening, I carefully looked into the dishwasher to determine if I could identify the root cause of the problem. The red substance coating many of the dishes was from a [REDACTED] thermoplastic lid that was in the top shelf and had completely liquefied to the point where there was no trace of it remaining in its original form. Other plastic items in the dishwasher on both the top and bottom shelves had either deformed, partially melted or completely melted and there was a large pool of re-solidified plastic on the bottom of the dishwasher that had been transferred to there as a liquid. The water dispensing sprayer at the bottom of the dishwasher separated and popped open because of the excessive heat. It was only after talking with my wife later on 4/15/13 that I became aware that the overheating was occurring about 11 hours after the dishwasher had been initially started on the night of 4/14/13. We have never set or used the “delay start” features and my wife is confident that it started immediately after she had activated it. Tonight (4/16/13), I looked for a possible GE dishwasher recall, found the most current one, typed in the unit’s model and serial numbers and was surprised that is was not included in the recall. Our model starts with “PDW8” which is not included in the recall, but models starting with “PDW7” are included. I am entering in this report out of an ethical concern that the current recall of 1.3 million dishwashers might not have captured all of those that contain the faulty wiring issue. What happened in my dishwasher should have never happened in a normally functioning appliance. Please feel welcome to contact me if I can be of any further assistance.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
Dishwasher was set for a normal wash. I eventually noticed the acrid smell of burning electronics. The door was extremely hot - difficult to open due to the high temperature and the smoke coming from the row of controls at the top. I pressed RESET/OFF, but when I closed the door, smoke resumed pouring from the top of the door. I needed to shut off the main power breaker to stop the thing.
The dishwasher safe plastics being washed were melted into modern art forms.
My home smells like it had been on fire.
This GE profile design is not safe.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
Caller purchased his dishwasher in 2005, had no problems with it until February 14th, 2013 after he had started the dishwasher then went to bed. He got up the next morning, smelled smoke, opened the dishwasher and saw burn marks inside the door and on the edge of the stone countertop above the dishwasher. He turned the circuit off. The fire had occurred sometime throughout the night, and had extinguished itself.
This recall could not be accessed at the CPSC web site but can be accessed at the GE web site.
No injuries have been reported. Caller contacted manufacturer who is fulfilling the remedy: A technician will inspect the unit, and if the unit is not repairable, manufacturer will replace it at no charge; but if it is repairable, they will repair it or provide a rebate toward the purchase of a new dishwasher of the same brand. The caller stated that a few hundred dollars toward a dishwasher is insignificant, and he would rather the manufacturer replace the dishwasher. (Note: since this report was initially filed, manufacturer has deemed the unit not to be repairable, and has replaced the unit.)
Caller contacted manufacturer who is fulfilling the remedy, however caller states that the remedy is not actually sufficient because a few hundred dollars toward a dishwasher is nothing and he would rather the manufacturer replace his dishwasher.

We have had a few incidents of the dishwasher getting extremely hot. On a couple occassions the dishes were extremely hot after the cycle completed. So hot that we had to wait for an extended period of time before the dishes could be handled. We thought it was unusual but didn’t think too much about it. On the last occassion the extreme heat actually melted plastic measuring cups and the lower spray arm and it actually caused the base of a wine glass to become misshaped.

GE profile dishwasher, purchased in 2005, model PDW9280J00SS; SN: GH861770B . We started the dishwasher cycle, and somewhere during the cycle we smelled an acrid odor and smoke was coming out from the control panel of the dishwasher (we think it was starting the dry cycle). We checked to make sure it wasn’t something fallen down onto the heating element, and started it up again (the start light was flashing which was not normal). Within a minute of starting back up again the smoke was viewed clearly coming from the control panel area.
We stopped the dishwasher cycle and disconnected the power to the unit. We later found that the unit was under a recall for the very problem we experienced.

GE Profile Dishwasher model# pdw9200n20bb serial# dr731458b, purchased March 2008. Loaded and started dishwasher on normal. Left to go have dinner, left my mother here at home. She reported smell of something burning. Opened dishwasher and all the plastic racks and bottom sprayer arm is melted into a molten plastic blob on bottom of dishwasher. Dishes and silverware covered in molten plastic. Heat resistant cutting board melted into a blob. This was much hotter than a normal dry cycle. The heating element would not turn off. We shut power to the unit at the breaker. If my mother was not here at the time I am sure this defect would have resulted in a fire. According to GE’s web site this unit is not included in the 2012 recall. I urge you to expand the models that have been recalled.

Caller purchased dishwasher around March 2005 and has had no problems with it until November 4th, 2012 when his wife started the dishwasher as usual but this time within moments it began smoking. She immediately turned the unit off by opening the door and went to consult with her husband (caller).
Caller came back into the house shut the units door, inspected the dishwasher then observed blue smoke coming from the top of the door. He immediately turned dishwasher back off and disconnected all power to it.
Caller has attempted to contact the manufacturer numerous times but has received only recordings notifying of recalls not including his model
There have been no injuries.
Caller and his wife are reporting this incident because they realize that if they had both left the kitchen area or the house or left the dishwasher running while sleeping they could have had a serious fire.

Regarding my GE Profile dishwasher. Stainless steel tub. We opened the dishwasher. Heating element on. UNABLE to turn dishwasher off. Had to go to breaker box. Melted plastic dishware. Plastic melted on the bottom of dishwasher in a fluid state. It was so hot that even the dishwasher arm was melted in half! Cracked drinking glass Burned hand when I tried to remove glass disware. We were lucky to be at home because dishwasher element never turned off. We talked to GE representative who informed us that only the dishwasher that did NOT have stainless steel was in their recall. In other words, our dishwasher did not qualify under their dishwasher recall because it was not plastic on the inside. We told them that this dishwasher was a fire hazard and we were lucky to be home so that we could turn it off at the breaker box. Otherwise it would have caught on fire it was so hot.

I have a GE Profile Dishwasher. About 2 weeks ago we smelt burning and when we opened the dishwasher, all of the plastic items such as cups, glasses, chopping boards had melted. The heat had also burnt a hole through the bottom of the plastic tub. Fortunately we were home and nobody was hurt.
I note that the Press release that was issued by GE states that there have only been 15 issues. I can make that 16.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher
I have a GE Profile dishwasher with a model that is not currently on the recall list. However, approx 6 weeks ago, I believe it was at the end of June or begining of July, I would have to go back and check my notice to GE, I woke up just after midnight to the smell of smoke and something burning....low and behold it was comming from my dishwasher........everything inside was melted, we couldnt turn it off it was like an oven, we had to rummage around under the sink and find the plug to unplug it......the interior of this dishwasher is stainless steel, but the parts that were plastic, including the silverware trays were burned and melted, my [REDACTED] flatware was melted at the bottom, the shiney silver stainless steel is now burned brown and black and still smells like fire......I called GE in the morning, and they sent a tech out the same day who determined that we had a run away heating element and told me not to plug it back in.....like I even could, the whole thing is destroyed.......now GE wants to give me 303.00 (I paid almost 1,000) and come and get it..........a depreciated buy back is what they call it...............wow! How insulting.....and then 6 weeks later they issue a recall for dishwashers with the same problem and knowing that my model should have been included but for whatever reason they chose not to include it is horrible. This dishwasher is unsafe and I truly believe that if the smell had not woke me up when it did, my house would have caught on fire. God forbid that should happen to some other owner of one of their faulty products, and they have KNOWLEDGE this is unsafe. Shame on them!

The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher
Dishwasher loaded and ran in evening. Later that evening putrid odor of undetermined origin was noted in home. Search throughout house to find the cause, but not located. Next morning, dishwasher found to be extremely hot on outer surface (door) and countertop. The heated dry light was on, along with the start button, which would not reset or turn off. The Unit had to be disconnected by turning the electrical breaker off. All contents were either melted or had a strange brown film, along with broken tines and melted silverware rack in the dishwasher. Even the water dispenser in the bottom of the dishwasher was melted / broken. A GE service representative was called and his report stated “Unit left heat on for too long and caused excessive damage to product. Due to excessive damage unit non-repairable.” He shared with me he had never seen this much damage done to a dishwasher. Spoke to GE Consumer advocates x2 and their solution is to provide me a discounted price on a new appliance and the email address for formal complaints. When I inquired about if there had been resolution to the cause of this problem because I wanted to make a formal complaint, I was told there is not a safety issue with the heating unit. I then spoke to a GE resource in Recall and she shared with me that it is a known issue of overheating and destroying contents, but it has not caused a fire. Igniting a fire = justification for a recall - can we not be proactive. This department is working with me and ensured that in newer models this potential hazard does not exist, but other consumers who have purchased in this model (PDW9280N20SS) should be aware of the potential fire hazard - everything was very hot.

After setting the dishwasher to wash the dishes and with approximately 10 minutes left to the cycle, my husband began smelling an intense burning plastic smell. When he opened the dishwasher to check, smoke was coming out of the door. He turned off the breaker and after opening the door to check for fire or melting, we found the large black junction box at the top right of the dishwasher door was melted and burned along with the wires that are attached to it. The box was extremely hot and we removed the box to avoid a fire. If we had not been home or had set it before bed, we would not have caught the burning and most likely would have had some type of house fire.

I had a very serious incident with my GE Elite Dishwasher
On 16 June 2012 I found my dishwasher had completed its cycle, however the heating element remained on. I discovered this while on my way to bed for the night noticing a burning smell. When I opened the dishwasher there was a blast of hot air. I tried to reset the dishwasher, however the heating element would not turn off. I finally resorted to taking out the circuit breaker to get the dishwasher to turn off. When I investigated the dishwasher I found multiple pieces of melted plastic ware, multiple broken glasses and the dishwasher tub itself was scorched and melted. Had I not noticed this before I went to bed for the night I am fearful that my house would have caught fire with me and my family asleep.
I investigated the recall notices for GE Elite dishwashers and have noticed that there are other models with the exact same issue, however my model was not listed as a recall item.
This is an extremely serious defect in this appliance that could easily cause great harm or death

June 2nd, 2012 the consumer set her dishwasher to run overnight.
Approximately 2a.m on June 3rd, 2012 the consumer and her family awoke to a house full of smoke.
The fire department was called because they couldn’t tell where the smoke was coming from.
After clearing the home the fire department advised her that the heating unit in the dishwasher never shut off and melted everything inside.
On June 4th, 2012 the manufacturer was contacted and they advised her to contact their extended warranty division.
The warranty division was contacted the same day and inspection was scheduled for June 7th, 2012.
The consumer believes this product to be a fire hazard because the unit should have shut off automatically once the cycle was complete.

Loaded dishwasher at 9:30a.m. and turned it on. Realized at about 6:pm that it was really hot over by the machine and the wife opened it finding all the stuff in it that we were washing that was made of plastic had melted. So we took that stuff out and closed the door and ate our dinner. After dinner we were gonna unload it and put the dirty dishes in. When we opened the door to unload it we realized that it was really hot again and couldn’t touch anything in there. We went down and shut off the breaker for the dishwasher. Obviously something is wrong and we don’t feel safe having any power running to it because of risk of fire.

I smelled something like crayons burning and checked the house, I could not find the source. I knew I would be up another hour ( packing for our trip the next day) and decided to see if the smell got worse or if I noticed something. An hour later i checked the Kitchen and it was foggy/smokey and I saw a stream of steam/smoke coming from the dishwasher. When I opened the dishwasher it was very apparent that the heating coil at the bottom turned on automatically ( the dishwasher was closed but not on) and melted anything plastic. My [REDACTED] cutting board is warped, a handle of a [REDACTED] knife melted, [REDACTED] melted to liquid ( this was the crayon smell), etc...The Granite counter top was very hot to the touch as were the side cabinets. It would not turn off so I went and turned off the main circuit breaker to the dishwasher. This is a GE product Model # PDW8200NBB, Serial # TM889360B GE came out to inspect it and started removing all the melted parts from the inside of the washer and was going to attempt to fix it!!! I had to remind them that had this happened less then 12 hours later we would not have been home and the kitchen ( and house, I will assume) would have burnt down! They are giving me the run around saying it was originally purchased in 2007 ( which it was not I have proof) and they are looking into it. I think this is a HUGE issue that they are taking lightly.

In 2007 we replaced our GE dishwasher because of a recall. There a potential fire hazard. There was a problem with the door and there was a risk of fire.
Yesterday, 2/4/2012, the dishwasher was running as normal when my wife and I heard a different noise. We looked at the dishwasher and from the bottom of the door there was a bright electric arc and some flames coming out of the bottom of the door. The circuit breaker tripped off and the arching stopped. I checked for any fire or damage, things seems safe. There is a burn mark on the apron of the dishwasher where the flames/arching occurred.
I had a contract with GE and called them. The contract expired 6 months ago. They offered to renew the contract for $259/yr and they’ll have someone out to repair the dishwasher as soon as possible.
This is my third attempt to to send this report. I hope it works. I do not get to a point where there is a confirmation that the report is accepted.

My GE Profile dishwasher caught fire. The components in the door caused the problem. Luckily I was home when it started smelling & smoking so the only thing damaged was the dishwasher. We didn’t have it covered under warranty (it was over 4 years old) & we were told it would be expensive to fix so we just replaced it. I am concerned now though because what we purchased was a [REDACTED] model. From a recent news report I saw, they may have the same problem.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher Model # PDW988OLSS 24 “ wide
On Thursday December 29, 2011 our GE Profile Dishwasher Model # PDW988OLSS heating element malfunctioned and didn’t shut off. It melted plastic dishes and utencils in lower and upper trays. Also, it melted the bottom of the silverware basket allowing the silerware to fall onto the heating element. It burned a wooden handle knife that laned on the heating element. The dishwasher was installed in Feburary of 2006. When I contacted GE they offered a reduced price on their new like type model but since it was more than 5 years old and out of warranty ( we purchased the extended warranty), and not part of any recall, that was the best they could do. It is a definite safty / fire issue that GE needs to correct. I see numerous recalls for this malfunction on GE Dishwashers and this model needs to be added to the recall list.

GE Profile Dishwasher Model # PDW9280JOOSS; Serial # AH718142B The dishwasher was turned on as usual. After 20 minutes of runtime I smelled an odor in the kitchen and determined it was coming from the dishwasher. It was a burning smell. I opened the dishwasher and noticed that no water had entered it however it was producing prolific steam. I tried pressing the “start” button to turn it off and it would only blink on and off. I could not turn the unit off and no other buttons on the control panel responded. I had to turn it off from the breaker. I found this site as I was researching and also found that it was recalled over a year ago. We were never notified. I am thankful that I was home and awake when this problem occurred, as it seems a fire was imminent.

This evening while running the dishwasher, we were watching tv in the other room and heard something obviously electrical arcing. Very loud, so I ran into the kitchen and found flames shooting out from under the dishwasher. I opened the dishwasher and the loud arcing sound stopped but the dishwasher (underside), was still on fire. I grabbed our fire extinguisher and put the fire out. I dissasembled the access plate on the front of the dishwasher and found the motor and all wiring had melted and burned in that area. If we had not been home, I can assure you we would have lost our home. The only thing I can think of we just recently had warranty work done on the dishwasher from Sears extended warranty service.

Ran dishwasher in morning. After cycle completed removed dishes, and refilled dishwasher over course of the day. Closed door partially but never completely. During dinner closed dishwasher completely. After dinner refilled and closed door. 4-6 hours later noticed smell like dishwasher was cooking what we had for dinner. Found granite countertop and dishwasher door very hot. Inside melted most plastic pieces. Discovered that this has happened to many GE Dishwashers and many have been recalled, but this product has not yet been recalled.

Dishwasher GE Profile Model PDW9980L00SS, SN RL860782B about 5 years old malfunctioned. Heating element kicked on and did not shut off. Was detected by my husband who was up late that night when he smelled burning plastic. It had been on for about 3 hours. When discovered we left the door ajar and the next day the cleaners closed it and it started overheating again. Thank God my oldest son came home about 2 hours later and again the insides were melting more. The lower water sprayer that goes around completely melted into the lower element. If it had not been detected I am sure the house would have burned down.

Consumer stated that her dishwasher received the recall remedy for Release #11-022 on 2/2011, however, while she was using the unit on wash cycle approximately 5-10 mins, she noticed smoke emitting from it and then there was a burnt odor. She immediately opened the door which stopped the cycle and then unplugged it to prevent any further damages.
11/25/11 Consumer contacted the manufacturer who advised that a service rep would be sent out to examine the dishwasher for repairs.
Consumer is concerned that the unit was already repaired for a fire hazard and it didnot resolve the problem, she believes that the dishwasher should be replaced and not repaired at this time.
UPDATE: Since submitting this report, the consumer and GE have had a discussion which resulted in GE replacing the dishwasher that was recalled and started the electrical fire, with a new dishwasher.

This is a GE Profile Dish Washer Model #GSD4330Y73WW Serial#MS818751B. On 9/3/2011 around 10 PM we started our dishwasher and then went to bed which we often do. The next morning on 9/4 around 7 am my wife went to the kitchen and the dishwasher was still on heat dry! The plastic utensils melted and dripped onto the heater. The entire kitchen was hot and actually smelled hot from the dishwasher. The dishes were so hot that you could not touch them without getting burned. I am concerned that this could have caused a fire. We sometimes start our dishwasher and go away for the day. Obviously, we will not be doing this anymore.

Turned on dishwasher and let it run through cycle in the early afternoon. After emptying it, not noticing a problem, we left it for about 4-5 hours until we smelled burning plastic. We do not use the heated dry feature but somehow it was turned on. The heating element had been stuck on, and began melting the plastic components in the dishwasher. The control panel would not respond to commands and I had to unplug it from under the sink. The granite countertop above it was too hot to touch, as well as the wood cabinets.
If I had not been home and the dishwasher had not been emptied immediately, the plastic dishes, along with the plastic components, would have melted and caused a fire when it melted onto the heating element.
Now I have to replace the unit because I am not living with the anxiety of a dishwasher that can melt our dishes and/or burn down our house. GE has recalled similar models and this product line should be considered as well.

GE Profile Dishwasher Overheated Model PDW7800N20CC Purchased in March 2009
Dishwasher had been run on heated cycle the previous afternoon, after the dishwasher was unloaded I turned off the heated drying. At approximately 9am the next morning a strong burning odor was noticed when we woke up and as I walked by the dishwasher I could feel the heat coming of of it. The entire dishwasher was very hot, items inside the dishwasher had started to melt and the surrounding cabinets were also hot to the touch. I immediately shut off the power to the dishwasher.
The dishwasher was off when this incident occurred. If this condition had continued I believe a fire would have started in the cabinets.

Caller is reporting overheating of GE Profile Dishwasher , 07/20/2011
She called GE, 07/25/2011 spoke with customer service, sent them pictures and report but no one advised her that there were recalls or that this incident had happened to other models before she purchased her dishwasher nor did the customer service rep advise her that there had been similar problems with other models.
Caller’s dishwasher model is not recalled.
Caller and husband started dishwasher around 1:30PM, let it run it’s cycle. Around 7PM she was standing at sink and heard noise coming from dishwasher, opened and noted that it was running, all was excessively hot. She Physically turned dishwasher off. She and her husband had dinner then went out for approximately one hour. When she and her husband came home they noticed a strange odor and began trying to narrow down to a source by throwing away flowers that were wilting, checking trash etc. until they noticed that it was actually coming from the dishwasher running again. When she opened it she noticed that at least most of the lights were on, all was so hot that they couldn’t be touched. She took a towel, pulled the racks out and left all to cool for at least ten minutes, she then took a towel and removed all her dishes. The racks themselves were not melted but plastic inside dishwasher is melted. Neither caller or husband could get the dishwasher turned off, husband unplugged unit. She called GE, 07/25/2011cShe called GE, 07/25/2011 spoke with customer service, sent them pictures and report but no one advised her that there were recalls or that this incident had happened to other models before she purchased her dishwasher nor did the customer service rep advise her that there had been similar problems with other models.
Around 9:30PM caller contacted number for appliance repair. Appliance Center called her the next morning, after listening to scenario she advised caller that it most likely would not be cost effective to repair. GE replaced, at no charge, the 2008 GE Profile dishwasher with a new one on 8/12/11. The took the old one back.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Quiet Power 7 Dishwasher
We bought a new GE Profile QuietPower 7 Dishwasher Model # PDW 9980N00SS approx. three (3) years ago that recently started to melt all hard plastic dishware and is getting extremely hot to the point that it is causing the very thick granite that it is under to not be touchable. We only use the “Heated Dry” cycle and have never used the “Added Heat” cycle. Also we only use dry tablet detergent and have never used liquid detergent in this new model, so I think GE has a much bigger dishwasher problem than they are letting on, by trying to blame it on liquid detergent. Also this is a new model that has not been on any prior list of overheating problems.

A new GE Dishwasher turns the heat element on by its self. The first time we unplugged it and called the service as it was under warrenty. They replaced a module in the door and said it should be fine. Two nights later it turned on again and I smelled something like some one was cooking at 4:00 AM. I got up to check and the dishwasher had turned on again and was hot enough to melt a nylon cutting board that was on the bottom rack. I unplugged the washer and called the GE service department. They are sending a service man out to check what went wrong. If we had not been here I am afraid that it would have caused a fire.

The product, in the report: GE Dishwasher
We have a GE Profile dishwasher which caught on fire May 4th. We immediately cut off the circuit breaker. The house was filled with white toxic smoke and electrical fire smell that took two and half or three days to get out even with the windows open, and fans on. The top of the dishwasher is black, gray and yellowish brown from all the smoke.
GE sent someone over Friday, May 6th. He took off the backside of the dishwasher door and he said the wires were corroded due to us living on the Intracoastal Waterway. (We live in the Charleston, SC area)and there is salt in the air. He also said that if it gets above 76 degrees in the house that could cause humidity which could be the cause as well. He said he could repair it, but not replace it. Inside, the area behind the control panel looks like the hollowed out portion of half a coconut without the white part in it. The front panel also has a yellowish brown melted in spot on the exterior of the machine where the controls are, in addition to the black gray and yellowish brown area all over the top of the dishwasher door.
One would think that instead of the area of the country we live in being the problem, loose seals on the dishwasher door around the electrical area would be the probable source of the problem. Also, I noticed on line that [REDACTED} sells a salt product for consumers to put in their dishwashers to soften the water. How GE’s competitor could put salt directly into their dishwasher, and yet living on the coast is a safety hazard according to GE is beyond me.
Also, in regards to the humidity, how hot and humid is it inside a dishwasher?
We feel unsettled having an appliance that has caught on fire “fixed”. We believe they should replace it. After all, this appliance has already had one fire.
I have received a run around from GE. The repairman said that only the Customer Service could authorize a replacement, and they will not do so. The Customer service person I spoke to said she could not order a replacement either, and I have yet to speak to someone who can.
GE is suggesting popping in a new circuit board into this dishwasher instead of replacing it. Is that an acceptable and safe remedy?
