The product, in the report: GE Profile Energy Star Fingerprint Resistant Top Control Stainless Interior Dishwasher with Microban Antimicrobial Technology. H 23.75” W D 24”. Defective part called Lower Wash Arm Model WD22X27724 Original. Customer Service states Replacement Model WD22X33499 won’t be available until May 2, 2026
A few days ago, we smelled a strong chemical odor when we were in our kitchen. However, we couldn’t determine where this acrid smell originated. We imagined it might be a fire or smoke somewhere. The odor began to dissipate. The next day, when we open our GE Dishwasher, we discovered the lower wash arm at both ends were scorched, melted and destroyed by contact with the heating element. We photographed the damage and reported it to Customer Service at GE Appliances.

The product, in the report: The product is a built-in GE Profile Dishwasher. The color is stainless steel.
My GE Profile Dishwasher (Model # PDT715SYN4FS and Serial # AT790071B) was defective and caused water damage throughout my kitchen. The dishwasher was being used normally when a rubber elbow related to the recirculation pump failed causing water to pour throughout my kitchen, between the floors, and ultimately into the finished basement. Water damage occurred to the flooring and structures (i.e. cabinetry) within the kitchen. In total, there is thousands of dollars in damage as a result of this malfunction. It should be noted that the rubber elbow in question is a seemingly well-known point of failure with these dishwashers. I have found numerous similar experiences on [REDACTED], [REDACTED], appliance parts sites, etc. There were no injuries; however, water seeped between floors and flowed into the finished basement (from the main floor) through an electrical lighting fixture. There was risk of injury given that dishwasher malfunction resulted in water openly flowing into and through electrical fixtures only feet away from where my family was sitting in the basement. There was also a risk of slipping on the water covered flooring.

The product, in the report: This is a GE profile dishwasher, stainless steel, approximately 14 months old.
I have a GE profile dishwasher that is approximately 14 months old. It has been producing excessive heat, particularly on the left side of the appliance, even without the heat drying function enabled. The heat is so excessive that it has caused warping/bubbling, and deformities of the wood cabinetry directly adjacent to the dishwasher. Multiple dishwashers have been in this spot previous to this one and have never caused this type of damage. The area is hot to the touch while the dishwasher is running.
As a full-time professional fireman, I am concerned that this creates a potential for a fire hazard.

The product, in the report: GE Profile DW, Model: PDW8280N00SS, SERIAL NO.: VL885494B, 24 x 30 Inches, Gray
We started our GE dishwasher last week (Model No.PDW 8280N00SS) and within about 20 minutes into the cycle we notice a charring or burning aroma. We checked the kitchen and viewed heavy smoke emanating from our dishwasher. The door was hot nto touch. We shut off the the power which IMO prevented a much worse fire and contaminates spreading to a greater degree. After 1 week the smell continues to permeate the air. No one was injured other than possible inhalation issues with the air.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Stainless Steel Dishwasher
We had a GE Profile dishwasher installed in our new house in Dec. 2007. There was one recall in Sept, 2012 and just this month, July our dishwasher overheated and nearly started a fire. Fortunately I happened to come into the kitchen and I smelled something burning. The dishwasher was extremely hot as well as the counter top. The element burnt the inside cavity of the dishwasher. We, my husband and I immediately turned off the breaker.
I know the dishwasher has a long chronological date however there is just my husband and myself in the household, we are retired and we travel a lot. This dishwasher gets very little use and this should not have happened. Due to this defect which is unsafe and could have ended up worse, ie a fire, we have to turn around and buy a new dishwasher. I don’t think that is fair and reasonable. GE should replace it at no cost to us because it malfunctioned. Not something we did.
I called GE and they said they would give us a new one for $539.31 installed. I challenged them on this even asking for a supervisor [REDATED] and they basically said they couldn’t do any better.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher. Model # CDW9380N00S, Serial # TM714540B. Stainless steel
We have a GE Profile. Model # CDW9380N00S, Serial # TM714540B. Running the dishwasher on a normal cycle. Smelled burning plastic in the house. Opened dishwasher and the heating went haywire. It was so hot inside we could not touch it, the kitchen countertop was hot to the touch. It melted everything plastic inside. Melted it down to liquid all over the inside. The lower wash arm is even melted and warped. When the machine is now turned off, if we close the machine door, the heat started up again. If we were not up late this would have happened while we were sleeping. My children, husband, and I. It would have been a FIRE in our home. We see many recalls but this particular model is not listed. I have photos if you would like to see.

The product, in the report: 24”, GE Profile Dishwasher
My GE Profile dishwasher was started on a wash cycle in the evening. We awakened in the early morning to the smell of burned material. We initially could not find the source of the smell. Smoke was beginning to fill the area around our kitchen, although our smoke alarm did not go off. We then isolated the smell to the dishwasher, opened it, and discovered that the heating coil mechanism on the bottom of the unit was still “on” / hot. The entire contents of the dishwasher, including components of the racks, utensil rack, and washing components were melted beyond recognition. During the heated dry cycle, the heat coil never shut off. In opening the door, we shut off the heating. At that point, much of the melted material was in a liquid state, further demonstrating that the heating coil never shut off.
The granite countertops were hot to the touch, and the surrounding cabinetry was hot to the touch. Thankfully, we were at home and could recognize this danger before a fire was started. We had no idea that this could happen. Most families end their evening by loading and running the load of dishes.... often hitting the start button on their way to bed. This seems incredibly unusual, but incredibly dangerous.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher
I have a GE Profile Dishwasher. It has a delay cycle feature of up to 8 hours. I was leaving for greater than 8 hours so I set the feature for 8 hours to start. When I returned, the dishwasher did not turn on as expected. I opened the front door and noticed the dishwasher did not cycle. I closed the door then pushed the start button to start the process. About 5 minutes into the cycle I noticed smoke coming from the top of the dishwasher. I opened the front door to the dishwasher, to stop the cycle. I touched the front of the door and could feel it was hot. So I went and opened the inside panel of the door, removed the panel to try and keep the fire contained. I was able to contain the fire. The circuit board and the electrical connection to the circuit board were melted. I removed the connector to the circuit board (it was melted to the board) and shut the power off to the appliance.

At 2 am my wife woke me and said she thought something burning inside the house. We discovered that our GE Profile dishwasher heating element was still on and had melted most plastic items inside including both racks. I unplugged the unit to stop the heating elements and let it cool down, then removed the unit to see if any of the cabinets were burned. Fortunately there was no signs of the wood cabinets scorched or burned.
However the granite counter top was too hot to keep you hand on it. We feel very fortunate that it did not catch the house on fire.
This is a GE Profile Dishwasher model number PDW9700N00II & serial no. AR735087B
We are concerned to learn this has happened to other models before.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher Model PDW8200J03BB Serial number VG813932B.
Our GE Profile dishwasher caught on Fire while washing dishes. Model number PDW8200J03BB; Serial number VG813932B. While washing dishes my wife and daughters were upstairs and smelled smoke and came and got me in the garage. Smoke was coming out to the top of the dishwasher and it smelled like an electrical fire. We immediately dialed 911 and I shut off the power to the dishwasher at the wall switch and at the breaker. After opening the door the smoked was coming out the opening of the latch. I covered it to snuff out the fire. The door was extremely hot to the touch around the top behind the control panel. The fire appeared to stop once the power was killed and snuffed out. However, the house was filled with the fumes of the fire which smelled very chemically like burnt electronics and plastics. This smell of the fumes made everyone feel sick and gave us each a headache. It trigger a migraine for my wife that lasted a week after the fire. The smell has lasted for weeks despite having opened all of the windows. The migraine came back again for several days after we returned from Christmas break having been out of the house for 12 days. We had a GE service technician come out and he said that the connector to the control board had caught fire. He said this was the same defect that he had seen on other dishwashers had been recalled for but our particular model was not on the recall list (I have pictures if needed). The unit was un-repairable due to the fact that the replacement parts are no longer available. This could have burned our house down and forced my family and I to breath in toxic chemicals. This model needs to be added to the recall list so that others are not injured.

I was running the dishwasher at night and went upstairs to check on my children. After about 30 minutes I smelled smoke and ran downstairs to find smoke pouring from the door of the dishwasher. My husband was sleeping and my children awoke very scared. I opened the door of the dishwasher and then turned the fuse off on the circuit breaker. We then unscrewed the front door to find the wires and plastic melted. Absolutely terrifying and unsettling that this could have been a full house fire in the middle of the night with my entire household sleeping. Our home is large and 4 stories and such a fire could have destroyed our lives. We are still breathing the fumes from the dishwasher and have difficulty breathing. I would like to file a law suit and need help so that this doesn’t happen to other families, this could have been fatal and could have burnt down our house as well.

Come home after being out all afternoon and noticed heat coming from the dishwasher. When I opened the dishwasher a blast of very hot air came out. I immediately sensed something was wrong and flipped circuit breaker controlling the unit. The were numerous items inside the dishwasher that were cracked & melted. There is no doubt whatsoever that had we left for a longer period of time that there would have been a strong potential for a fire. I would have assumed that at the very least a Thermal Breaker inside the unit should have shut it off, but it appears to have not taken effect. Will go out tomorrow morning and buy a new dishwasher - I would never be able to sleep or leave home for a lengthy period of time knowing this fire hazard is in my home.

My husband and I smelled something burning - it smelled electrical or like plastic was melting on a heating coil. The smell was getting worse and we were alarmed because we could not immediately locate its source. The smell was the most intense in the kitchen and we realized it had to be the dishwasher that was running. We turned off the dishwasher, opened the door, turned off the power to the dishwasher at the fuse box, and my husband unscrewed the dishwasher door panel. We were shocked that the black metal housing of the motherboard was melting! We are very relieved we were not sleeping at the time and that our house did not burn down!

The product, in the report: GE Profile Stainless Steel Dishwasher
While folding laundry upstairs tonight, we smelled smoke coming from the first floor - we were on the second floor. We ran downstairs to the kitchen and toward the smell. It seemed to be coming from the dishwasher. We had a load running. The entire cabinets around the dishwasher smelled of smoke. We realized it was in fact coming from the dishwasher and opened it up. We checked to see if the heating element had plastic or something on it, but it did not. We took everything out and saw nothing on the inside of the dishwasher. We looked under the dishwasher and saw nothing. The powercord was fine. As I went to close the dishwasher, I smelled a horrible smell coming from the DOOR of the dishwasher. We didn’t know what to do, so we unplugged the dishwasher and let it sit for about 20 minutes. We went back to check on it and found that one area of the door under the control panel was still warm. So we decided to take the door apart. When we did, we found the black box inside the door with all the wires going to it was black with soot and melted. It was also the exact smell we had smelled upstairs earlier. Clearly the black box/motherboard of the dishwasher had caught FIRE during the cycle and by the grace of God, we caught it in time and stopped the dishwasher before it could become a full blown house fire.

Dishwasher was purchased on 2/15/08. Has been operating fine to date until this past week. Now the heating element will not turn off when in the Heated Dry mode and we actually had some plastic items begin to melt. We operated the dishwasher several times to make sure it was not some fluke, but it continues to heat to the point you cannot even touch the dishes and can feel excessive heat through the counter top. We have shut off the breaker to the dishwasher and will not use heated dry any longer.
Went to your website and see that there was a recall on our model. Model # is PDW 7880N10SS with a Serial # of AR 759462B, this puts our dishwasher on your 2012 recall list.
What will GE do for us to fix this?

The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher: Model: PDW9280N00SS, Serial Number TM922574B.
I have a GE Profile Dishwasher: Model: PDW9280N00SS, Serial Number TM922574B.
We woke up around 4 a.m. on 2/10/18 to the smell of smoke and smoke alarm set off. We came downstairs to find smoke billowing out of our dishwasher. When we opened the dishwasher we discovered that all plastic parts of the dishwasher had melted, such as the arms at the bottom, the wheels and most of the racks. Some of the plastic was smoldering and smoking. The melted parts had dripped all over the vessels in the dishwasher. It was so hot that it felt like the interior of a broiler or hotter and even with oven mitts, handling the dishes was impossible. We switched off the circuit and waited for it to cool. When it did, all the plastic had congealed destroying the entire contents of the dishwasher. Some of the plastic had burnt, hence the smell. All the plastic parts of the dishwasher had partially or completely melted. It took nearly a week for us to get the smell out of the house, despite us leaving all the externally venting exhaust fans on continuously and leaving some of the doors open, until it became unbearably cold.
We are now without a dishwasher and have lost an entire night’s load, which includes our glasses, cups, plates, silverware, cookware and several serving ware, which are now destroyed. We are going to have to repurchase all of them and a new dishwasher. More importantly, this was a major fire hazard and had I not woken up and switched off the dishwasher we may have had a major fire. Our children’s bedroom was directly above the dishwasher and we shudder to think what might have happened.
We since contacted GE and were directed to their Monogram Preferred / Special Programs and Recalls. They sent a technician out who said that (a) the dishwasher is unsalvageable; and (b) we were very lucky that the cabinets around the dishwasher did not catch fire. However, they want us to pay for a new dishwasher and they have so far not reimbursed us for the destroyed vessels and damage.

The product, in the report: The dishwasher was purchased with the house. We have lived here 6 months. The dish washer is Stainless in and outside.
We were washing a load of dishes and smelt something burning. We opened the dishwasher to find one plastic bowl warped. We removed it and closed the door. The odor grew stronger and about five minutes later we return to find the lights on the door out. We open the door which was very hot to the touch. The bottom of the silverware rack was melted to the bottom rack. I went to the breaker panel and through the 20 amp breaker. The dishwasher was so hot it discolor the color on the ceramic dishes and the bottom spray bar Teflon melted off the metal spray bar and the metal bar was warped. My guess if we had not through the breaker the dishwasher would of caught fire. It took almost an hour before we could touch it without getting burn.
The dishwasher is toast beyond repair if you ask me.

On December 31, 2017 we turned on the GE dishwasher to run a normal cycle as usual and after some time running, possibly 30 minutes or so there was a horrible plastic smell in the house. We identified it coming from the dishwasher. When we opened the dishwasher, it was extremely hot, and saw immediately that some of the baby spoons had melted down to the bottom of the tub. We proceeded to turn off the unit. After leaving it to cool down, we realized that the unit was still heating and again when opening the unit after a more distinct odor opened the unit to a cloud of chemical smoke. We had to run to the basement and turn off the circuit breaker the unit is wired on to shut it down completely.

Ran dishwasher following Breakfast on Friday September 15, 2017. Family was gone for the day and spent the night out of town. When we returned home on Saturday September 16, 2017 the house was filled with a light smoke and heavy odor of plastic burning. While investigating the cause, I laid my hand on the granite countertop over the dishwasher and it was very hot. I noticed the lights were still illuminated on the dishwasher control panel. I opened the dishwasher and discovered that most of the plastic was melted, with some being moderately charred. Following a while to allow for cool down, I removed the dishwasher to make sure there wasn’t any damage to the cabinets (there wasn’t). It appears that the heating element remained energized following the wash and drying cycles.

The submitter set the dishwasher to a normal wash cycle and the dishwasher completed the cycle.
Approximately 8 hours later, the submitter’s wife smelled a burn odor and noticed smoke emitting from the dishwasher. The submitter said the dishwasher did not appear to be on and it was not making a noise. The submitter’s wife then unplugged the dishwasher. When the submitter’s wife opened the dishwasher she noticed white smoke and burn damages inside. The submitter said the heating element and the plastic tray that holds the utensils have burn damages.
The submitter went online and noticed that the firm has issued recalls for a similar issue but his model and serial do not match the recall. The submitter called the firm’s recall hotline and went through the prompts of entering his model and serial. The submitter received a prompt that his dishwasher was not included. The submitter plans to contact the firm’s customer service.
The submitter indicated that the dishwasher was already in the newly built home when he purchased it in December 2008.

My GE Profile dishwasher has always seemed to be extremely hot -burning up plastics that were supposed to be dishwasher safe and the upper rack has burned up many of the posts until they fall off -black! I cannot find where my particular model of dishwasher has been recalled, however I see many of different model numbers that have been recalled for the same issue of overheating! I have had to purchase (over $150!) a new upper rack and am starting to be concerned about the new rack burning up as well or my house catching fire possibly. Do I have ANY recourse for this matter? My dishwasher was installed in my new home in 2008 and has had this issue from the beginning.

GE Profile dishwasher. The dishwashers heating element continues to heat after the cycle is complete and when the door is closed but not running. It is heating constantly as long as there is power to the appliance. In order to prevent an accidental fire the power must be shut off at the electrical panel. This resulted in melting plastic inside the dishwasher. We were lucky to be home and smell the melting plastic and remove the power before any additional damage occurred.

The product, in the report: GE Profile dishwasher
Our GE Profile dishwasher had recently finished a full cycle and was off. My son unloaded the dishwasher and then left the house. When he returned home the dishwasher heating cycle had apparently turned on (there were no dishes in it at the time) because he could smell burning plastic and the dishwasher was very hot. The insides had melted (this includes the part that spins the water on the bottom, the main lower basket and the silverware basket.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher
I started my 9-year old GE Profile dishwasher at approximately 10 pm at night, and then went to bed. At approximately 7 am the following morning I noticed that the counter above the unit was very warm. When I opened the unit I discovered that the heated drying cycle was still active. Temperatures in the interior of the unit were hot enough to melt plastic - silverware had melted through the plastic silverware basket and started to melt into the plastic tub; plastic container tops in the top rack had completely melted and dripped down onto dishes in the lower rack.
Heat continued to pour out of the unit until I turned off the circuit breaker. After letting the unit cool and removing it from under the counter it became clear that insulation on various connectors had become discolored due to the heat.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Stainless Steel Dishwasher
Normal use of dishwasher caused a large spark near bottom left of the dishwasher on the outside upon closing the door. It happened yesterday and again today. While unloading dishwasher today, we noticed that there was water in the bottom and that it didn’t drain after the last wash cycle. After draining water and trying to reset device, can not get it to run a full cycle. There are reports of similar incidents that even caused fires with models made between March 2006 to August 2009. Unplugged device and called manufacturer.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
I purchased a GE Profile Dishwasher in 2006 Model# PDW8880L00SS - Serial # AL738998B and 3x now the heating element/panel has malfuctioned causing dishes and other items to melt or catch fire in the dishwasher. When the dishwasher is done running its cycle the heating element continues to heat and won’t shut off without having to shut off the breaker.
I had purchased an extended warranty when I first purchased the unit and the warranty company sent out someone to replace the panel and the heating element inside the dishwasher within the first 5 years and now again the same issue is happening (03/26/17). So that means twice now the panel/heating element have malfunctioned and needs to be replaced again (a 3rd time). I started the dishwasher before I went to bed on 03/25/2017) and then I heard the smoke alarm going off at 2 am (03/26/2017) and I ran to put out the sizzling meltdown and the overheated dishware which could only be handled with a pot holder and then had to shut down the breaker since the dishwasher was blowing very very hot air even though it was not on and it was shut off.
I have never heard of a panel/heating element going bad 3 times in 11 years. Each time it’s happened thankfully I was at home but I lost dishware that either cracked from the heat or melted plus all the very toxic fumes coming from inside the dishwasher. The dishwasher was smoking so bad and with all the toxic fumes enough to set off the smoke alarms.
I need either GE to replace the faulty panel/heating element and/or replace the dishwasher.

The product, in the report: GE Profile stainless steel dishwasher model PDW8280N20SS
I had GE Profile stainless steel dishwasher model PDW8280N20SS, it was used daily until the day of incident where we smelled burnt plastic smell all around the home at 6:00 am, when checked the heater element stayed on after the cycle completed (malfunction in controller circuit) and has melted sprayer, filter mesh around it and silverware holder.
I bought this upgraded model for its more safer features, I also had to replace control board on the GE profile refrigerator in first 2 month due to mfg issue.
It seems GE neglected to provide a breaker circuit for this kind of issue that can lead to fire hazard.

For a few weeks our dishwasher had been making a rumbling sound after it finished its wash and rinse cycles and moved into the drying cycle. On March 14 after it went it to the dry cycle the unit began smoking - the motor or motherboard, we think, fried and possibly caught fire. The unit was smoking so bad that smoke filled the kitchen. I immediately turned off the unit and turned the breaker off that fed the dishwasher. We have completely disconnected the dishwasher and will be purchasing a new one.

I have a GE Profile dishwasher. Approx 10 years old. We use it about once a day on average. About 2 weeks ago, when the dishwasher was started, after about 15 mins of operation, thick smoke started pouring from the dishwasher door. There was a strong smell of burning electrical wire. All the lights on the control panel began flashing. At this point we have turned off the circuit breaker to that area. If not, when the dishwasher door closes, the thick smoke returns.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher Model Number PDW8280N20SS, SN FR767325B
In the middle of the night I smelled something burning so I got up to investigate. Our GE Dishwasher Model # PDW8280N20SS SN FR7677325B was overheating to the point it melted all of the plastic in the upper tray and the lower arm had melted and drooped onto the heating element and was burned brown. The silver ware was so hot it melted through the holder and molten plastic has dripped down onto the base of the tub. The top counter above the DW (granite thank goodness) was almost too hot to touch. The only way to turn the heating element off was to flip the circuit breaker.
Only by the grace of god did we not have a house fire as a result of this product’s failure. As far as I can tell it is not part of the current recall of GE Profile DW’s. We will contact the Mfr on Monday morning and based on their willingness to replace all damage caused by their product, we will chart a course forward from there.

GE Profile dishwasher burned up and is destroyed. The dishwasher was empty and not in use. It had not been used since that morning. In the early evening I smelled something like electrical burning in the kitchen but did not locate where the smell was coming from. A couple of hours later my husband noticed the smell and discovered that our granite countertop above the dishwasher was too hot to touch. The dishwasher was not turned on, there were no dishes inside it, no water inside it, yet it was too hot to touch. The electrical panel on the dishwasher read 93 minutes and was not counting down. The start/reset button on the panel would not work, nor would any other touch button on the panel. We went outside to the electrical circuit panel and turned the power to the dishwasher off. After switching it back on, the reset button worked, the dishwasher sounded like it was attempting to drain (there was no water in it) and then it shut off. We brought a fan into the room to help cool the dishwasher and countertop off. The next day I opened the dishwasher to discover that the entire bottom rack had melted, the blade in the bottom of the tub that moves the water around had also melted. The dishwasher is completely ruined.

We put dishwasher on as we normally have done. Towards the end of the cycle we smelled smoke and noticed it was coming out of the top of the dishwasher. I originally thought maybe a plastic lid fell on the heating coils that dry the dishes. I removed all of the dishes from the dishwasher and the bottom slide out rack and found nothing. The inside of the door was very hot to the touch. I put the washer back on and intense grey/black smoke started pouring out of the top. Upon examination it was coming from an opening at the top middle of the door directly under the handle. The smell is of burning plastic/wire. I immediately unplugged the washer and will be calling GE tomorrow.

I purchased a G.E. Profile Dishwasher approximately 2006. Have had no problems with it till a few days ago ( 4/23/2016) . Woke up in the morning to find the dishwasher heating element never turned off from previous evenings wash. There was no fire, the surrounding area was very HOT. I went online to see how to fix the problem. Where i discovered that the G.E. Profile dishwasher had multiple recalls for the same problem i am having. The heating element not turning off. My dishwasher model #PDW928ONOOSS and serial # FM718154B did not show up on the recall list. I find this very disconcerting when in fact it is the same problem i am having with with dishwasher. I have not yet notified G.E. of the problem for the fact that since its not on recall list they will be less than helpful. I realize it’s about 10 years old , but up to now its been a reliable product. It’s not safe to use and i do not want to put money into product that has recall issues.

We started the dishwasher on a normal cycle before going to bed 2 nights ago. We were awakened at 4AM to smoke filling the bedroom and house. We discovered that some time after starting the dishwasher, there was a fire in the door of the dishwasher in the area of the electrical circuitry. There was soot and melting of the plastic cover over the control panel at the top of the dishwasher door. The fire apparently failed to stop the heat cycle as all of the dishes in the washer were extremely hot as was the granite countertop over the washer. Fortunately there were no injuries.

The product, in the report: GE Profile stainless steel dishwasher with controls on top
I have a GE Profile dishwasher PDw9980N00SS - we were not using the dishwasher - My son smelled something burning. After searching the house he found that it was coming from the dishwasher. He opened the dishwasher door to let the heat out. When I came home I opened the door to the dishwasher because I smelled plastic burning. The baskets on the top and bottom had melted. The plastic had melted onto the silverware that was in there, the cookie jar that was green was brown, the clear coating on the dishes was gone, they felt as though they were green ware and the finish was gone off the metal spider. This product has something drastically wrong with it and needs to be recalled. I have the stainless steel dishwasher. It should also be noted that we purchased this dishwasher because the last GE dishwasher we had was also recalled for being a fire hazard.

The product, in the report: GE profile dishwasher
Our Dishwasher caught fire (GE Dishwasher Model: GSD4030Z07WW Serial# SZ816609B) installed originally by builder in 2001.
The fire started during the drying cycle and melted the utensil basket and started in the door also.
It was 8 am in the morning when my wife was leaving to work when she heard loud popping noise coming from the dishwasher and opened the dishwasher door to see the flames and smoke.
She called the fire dept. and got a fire extinguisher. She was able to put the fire out just before the fire dept. arrived. And they checked it all and said the fire was out.
I called GE Consumer relations 800-386-1215 and told them the dishwasher caught fire on 10-9-2015 and called fire dept. which has record, I was asked to email them photos of the dishwasher, which I did, and they emailed me back that they didn’t need to come out and see it or want the dishwasher, which I still have. .
I hope no one else has this problem, if we weren’t home there’s no telling what may have happened...
I asked GE about rebate for a new dishwasher and spoke to several people at GE and have been unable to get a rebate form. I hope to get some fort of form or rebate for the new dishwasher.
Thanks,

The product, in the report: GE Profile Triton XL Dishwasher (white) Model: GSD6900J10WW Serial: DL826872B This dishwasher was installed by Beazer Homes. We had the home built in early 2006, and this dishwasher was the model that Beazer installed.
On December 9, 2014, I turned on my GE Profile Triton XL dishwasher (model number GSD6900J10WW, serial number DL826872B) at about 6:30 pm. I went upstairs to give my sons (ages 3 and 6) a bath. After their bath, we were relaxing on the bed upstairs playing on the computer when I heard the smoke detector alarm around 7:20 pm. My husband was not yet home from work. I went downstairs to investigate, finding that our kitchen was full of smoke. I could see that the source was the dishwasher. I opened the dishwasher door and saw flames 12-18 inches high coming from the lower left rear of the inside of the dishwasher. I immediately ran upstairs to get my two small boys. We escaped down the staircase and out the front door while I was dialing 911 from my cell phone. The fire department arrived in 8 minutes. They entered the house to discover heavy black smoke from the 9 foot ceiling about halfway down. They made their way to the kitchen to find flames about 6 feet high engulfing the dishwasher and the kitchen cabinet adjacent to the dishwasher. The fire department was able to extinguish the flames using a 2-gallon extinguisher, although they did have the fire hose loaded and ready to use, if necessary. Once the fire was extinguished, they attempted to prop open every window on the first and second floor of our two-story home to let out smoke. (The fire department had to prop open our windows with boxes and random items because our windows did not open properly – a separate problem.) Black smoke was coming out of every open window.
While the flame damage was mainly in the kitchen, smoke and soot damaged our entire house (both floors). Structurally the house is sound, but it needs to be gutted. Nasty black soot is on literally every surface you can imagine. It worked its way into every crevice of every item. As a result, we lost all of our personal property in the home. Several examples of where soot got inside: underneath the wrapping paper of a wrapped Christmas gift that was under the bed in the master bedroom upstairs, the closed toothbrush sanitizing cabinet of a Sonicare electric toothbrush in the master bathroom upstairs, all electrical outlets, and every place that was not air-tight. It was a devastating fire.
We estimate our overall damage at more than $500,000. In addition, we have been damaged by needing to live elsewhere for the past 8 months and counting, dealing with attorneys and insurance companies who do not want to fix the house properly, and wasting many hours painfully inventorying our damaged items one at a time…not to mention the stress and uncertainty of having our lives suddenly thrown in turmoil.
A fire investigation, requested by our insurance company, American Strategic Insurance, was conducted on December 19, 2014. In attendance were several forensic engineers, including those representing our insurance company, Beazer Homes USA (our homebuilder which installed the dishwasher) and GE (the dishwasher manufacturer). Despite our numerous requests through our attorney, all parties have failed to provide us with any official written results of the fire investigation. It is strange how this has been kept so secret. Beazer did write us, however, that the investigation revealed that the source of our fire was an electrical defect within the dishwasher itself, and that it did not have to do with the installation or our use of the dishwasher. Our attorney has tried to contact GE to open a dialogue with them, but they, through their Electric Insurance company, refuse to talk with us about the incident. Their behavior is forcing us to file suit against them, subjecting us to a long, costly legal process that will damage us even further.
Unfortunately, we learned after our fire that there was indeed a recall on our model dishwasher several years ago and GE failed to notify us. GE most definitely knew the model and serial number of our dishwasher. In early 2008, we noticed that our dishes were not coming clean. We scheduled a service call with GE Appliances’ GE Consumer Home Services for February 21, 2008. A GE employee visited our home on that day to troubleshoot our dishwasher. He concluded that the dishwasher itself was fine, but we needed to run the hot water at our kitchen sink before turning on the dishwasher. This would allow the dishwasher to have the hot water it needs to clean the dishes. We have a receipt from this service call, which clearly shows the model number of our dishwasher. GE knew the model number and serial number of our dishwasher. It is frustrating to think that all of our troubles were completely avoidable had GE simply informed us about the recall. Clearly there is a major problem with GE’s recall notification process.
The responsible parties need to be held accountable. We view both GE and Beazer as responsible for our fire. In the automotive world, Takata has had major problems with airbag recalls. However, Takata does not notify car owners that their specific car has a recall. Instead, the automobile manufacturer (Ford, BMW, etc.) notifies their affected customers about the recall. Should it be similar here? Beazer sold us this dishwasher, and they should have known what they installed. Are they obligated to notify us? Of course, GE should have known what was in our house, as well. We feel that both companies are responsible and need to be held accountable. Beyond the major damage our property sustained, it would have been so easy for one of us to be injured or killed. We were lucky.
If you would like any more information, we invite you to call either me or my husband [REDACTED].

The product, in the report: GE Profile dishwasher, stainless steel
We had a fire AFTER a recall repair was performed for that same fire hazard. The Compliance Department recommended I file this report.
After moving into our home in April 2013, our home inspector notified us that our GE Profile Dishwasher was part of a recall (#11022 dated October 26, 2010). The hazard: “Water condensation can drip onto the electronic control board, causing a short circuit and resulting in an overheated connector. This poses a fire hazard to consumers.” I contacted GE and chose the RECALL REPAIR option. A GE technician came to our home approximately April/May 2013 and performed the recall repair.
On July 21, 2015, my Mom loaded and ran the dishwasher before going to bed 3-4 hours later. Upon awakening the next morning, she smelled a strange smell and upon entering the kitchen saw the dishwasher had caught on fire (fire damage to the control panel and soot on the cabinetry and dishwasher door panel). Fortunately, the breaker tripped; however, this failed recall repair put my family at risk of injury and possible death.
I called the GE hotline to report this fire/failed recall repair. They sent out a GE technician ([REDACTED]) who immediately upon entering my kitchen, stated, “this is the worst fire I have ever seen” and advised me that my dishwasher was “non-repairable”. Please note that [REDACTED] did not open my dishwasher door nor did he remove the door panel to investigate the recall part that had been installed in 2013. [REDACTED] stepped outside my home to call into his office and then came back in to advise me that GE would call me the following day with their offer.
GE contacted me the following day with an offer to replace my GE Profile with another GE Profile of THEIR choosing. I advised them their offer was unacceptable and that my family does not feel safe with another GE product under these circumstances. GE replied, this was all they were allowed to offer “per the law”. We remain dissatisfied with their offer, their lack of concern for our safety, and the harm and possible injury and death that could have occurred as a result of this failed recall repair. We do not want anyone else who has had this specific recall repair performed to think the risk of fire no longer exists.

At 4:00 pm I opened the GE Profile PDW9980L00SS dishwasher door and saw that I had 1 minute left of my speed cycle with added heat drying. I closed the door and 10 minutes later reopened the dishwasher door. At this time, the dishwasher display said that the cycle was over and the dishes were clean. I removed some of the standing water left in the cups and kept the door ajar for the dishes to cool down and dry further. At 7:00 pm, my husband put away the clean dishes / utensils out of the dishwasher and put in dirty ones. He fully shut the dishwasher door but did not touch any buttons to turn it on. At 12am, I smelled something burning. It was the dishwasher (2 floors lower than when I originally smelled it). When we opened the dishwasher door, nothing but smoke and chemical smells came out. The windows and doors were opened immediately. The granite countertop above the dishwasher was hot to touch. The heating element never turned off from the “completed” cycle, and when my husband shut the door it just stayed on heated dry. It was so hot, the plastic utensil holder in the dishwasher melted and my silverware fell out to the bottom of the heating element. The dishwasher’s rotating arm melted until the metal was showing. I had a heavy duty plate made for microwave cooking, that melted. The dishwasher is obviously ruined with nothing but melted plastic at the bottom of it. Most of the plastic liquefied was part of the actual dishwasher itself.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
I just visited the Consumer Product Safety Commission concerning a problem with a GE Profile dishwasher. The product recall number is 12-244 which list several models of the GE dishwashers with the prefix for the model number and serial numbers. Although our GE Profile model number or serial number is not listed we still had a problem. Our model number is PDWF800R10BB and serial number is DT718621B and was purchased during the time frame listed on the recall. Recently the dishwasher was running and we heard a loud pop. When I checked the circuit breaker was tripped and the plug, where the dish washer was connected was burned and melted. I had the plug replaced and reconnected the dishwasher and it seems to work with the exception of the heating element. We have two of the GE Profile dishwashers purchased approximately the same time period. After reading the report I now have concerns as to the safety of the units. The only reason I came across the recall was because I was checking out replacement heating elements.

The product, in the report: Built in GE Profile dishwasher PDW8880J0055; MG 803800B Appliance Park 120 volts, 60 Hz, Motor 1.0 Amp, Other 8.1 Amp, Current 9.9 Amp, purchased new when house built 11/2004
from 3-3-15 to 3-7-15 the GE Profile Dishwasher had mild odor of hot rubber about it, though we did not identify what this was until 3-7-15. On 3-7-15 There was a strong odor of melting plastic and smoke came out of top of door. After turning off the machine via the electric switch to the dishwasher and opening the door, the inside door panel was hot to the touch, far warmer than any other part of the machine. The electronics display had been acting oddly for many months. On the short cycle, for example, the time had gone from 32 minutes to 28 minutes to 31 minutes without any adjustments. The long cycle increased in length by 30 minutes, again without any adjustments to the machine, which was why we were using the short cycle. The dishwasher cleaned fine and had no trouble pumping out water. We have never used the heated dry cycle on this machine, except once or twice by accident after the power was out and the machine re-set to default to heated dry. The heated dry cycle was off on 3-7-15 when the dishwasher came close to catching fire. We did not have to use a fire extinguisher or call 911. It took several hours with our whole house fan on to clear the house of the burn-smell.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
GE Profile Dishwasher came new with newly built home in July 2007 then recalled 2012.
The unit was repaired in 2012 according to the remedy for release# 12-244.
The unit now has the same problem that it was recalled and repaired for with release# 12-244.
January 16th, 2015 the caller and his wife loaded the dishwasher, started it around 10:00 PM and then went to bed around midnight. They smelled a light odor of burning but describe it as that odor when we turn the furnace on for the first time. They searched for the source but couldn’t find it.
Around 2:30AM January 17th, 2015 the caller’s wife woke, went to the kitchen to get something from the cupboard, smelled the faint odor of burning but could not locate the source until she accidently brushed against the counter by the dishwasher and surface burned her abdomen.
She opened the dishwasher to discern the source of the heat but hot air came blasting out of the dishwasher.
The experience is described as if she had stuck her head in a hot oven.
She looked in the dishwasher once the heat passed and saw that all the plastic products in the top rack were melted to the rack.
She does not consider her surface burn as an injury because there are no lasting marks or redness.
The caller’s spoke with GE representative [REDACTED] who holds badge# [REDACTED] January 20th, 2015, she advised caller that they would not repair the unit again at their cost, they will not replace the unit but will provide the caller with $100 gift card toward the purchase of a new unit.
The caller and his wife are asking that the manufacturer replace the dishwasher with a different model and take the safety issue seriously.
He states the the entire development he lives in has the same dishwasher and the potential for harm from fire in his opinion is very great.

The product, in the report: GE Profile stainless steel dishwasher. Operated well for ten years.
My Ge Profile dishwasher (10 years old), was open. As I stood next to it washing dishes a large spark/flame suddenly shot out from the heating element. I couldn’t see anything touching the element and the machine was not on in any way, though it was connected to a power source. A few minutes later a larger flame shot out so I turned off the breaker on the circuit board.

On November 18, 2014 4:45 pm we were in house and started smelling something similar to candle being extinguished. I came into kitchen and smoke was coming out of vent on dishwasher. Opened door which was hot to touch and countertop was also ridiculously hot!!! The dishwasher was run early this morning and had completed its cycle (or so we thought) not sure how long this heating element was cooking the dishes. The silverware bin melted to the point it started dripping onto heating element!!! Good thing we were home or results could have been devastating...

The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher
Dishwasher started smelling like burning electronics and plastic while it was washing dishes.
I removed the door panel to investigate. The burning smell was coming from the control board. It appears to be a relay that was overheating and smoking. It also melted the power connector to the control board. It is very likely this would have resulted in a fire had I not been nearby.

The product, in the report: It’s a GE Profile stainless steel dishwasher; model and serial number previously stated.
I was running my GE Profile dishwasher and the house filled up with smoke that smelled like an electrical fire. I immediately turned off and unplugged my dishwasher. I noticed there’s a recall for my brand of dishwasher that seems to describe what happened to mine, however my model number is off by 1 number. The recall is for model number PDW9880J and serial number starting in AH. My model number is PDW8880J; serial number AH769906B. It might not be a bad idea to add my model number as well.

The product, in the report: Stainless Steel, top controls, 2007 dishwasher by GE Profile, Model #PDW9280N20SS Serial# GR845772B Quiet Power 6
I was home with three young children when I noticed an awful electrical burning smell but I couldn’t figure out where it was coming from. Soon my whole downstairs was filled with haze- there was smoke in my house! I immediately checked the walls and felt light switches to check for hotness to determine if there was an internal electrical fire. Soon I discovered the top of my counter was extremely hot, and when I opened up the cabinet under the sink, I got blasted with a heat wave. It wasn’t until I touched the dishwasher and burned myself (it was scalding hot), that I realized it was the dishwasher. It was so hot that if my one year old twins had touched the dishwasher, their little hands would have blistered. I had to open the dishwasher with oven mitts, and everything inside was melted, even the silverware rack and dishwasher parts, such as the spinner on the bottom. I cannot even get the bottom rack out, as everything is fused together in one big melted mess. I turned off the circuit breaker to the dishwasher so that the electrical current would be cut, becausee apparently there was an electrical failure in the dishwasher’s heating element that was causing this!

The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher Model number PDW8200J10WW SN ML906260B
GE dishwasher Model number PDW8200J10WW , SN ML906260B This dishwasher has been working for 5 years. Now, it is turning itself on and the heater is melting all the plastic in it - by itself!. Two days ago, in the morning the countertop was hot and then I noticed the dishwasher was EXTREMELY hot. I could not touch the contents without burning my hands. Plastic parts were melted and pooled in the bottom. Yesterday, we came back home in the evening and it did it again during the day! Luckily, this time we caught it sooner because it wasn’t quite as hot. The door was closed, but it was not turned on. It doesn’t even get that hot when it is running.
I discovered the recall notice and apparently this model is not one of those covered. It should be. This is dangerous!

The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher model # GLD6860N00SS, s/n ZL764463B stainless steel exterior with a plastic interior. Installed in new home in around January, 2007.
The dishwasher was running and I noticed an unusual smell in the kitchen, I turned around and saw smoke pouring out of the dishwasher. I quickly determined the dishwasher was on fire, turned the dishwasher off, got the fire extinguisher and my husband then went to the basement to turn the circuit breaker off. The fire extinguished itself. We pulled the front panel off of the dishwasher to find the inside charred and that the circuit board had caught fire (I have photos). We are grateful that we were home and that there were no injuries and no further damage to property, this could have had a very different ending. I noticed that there was a recall for GE Dishwashers manufactured during the same time frame as ours and for the same problem, but I did not see our model # on the list. The dishwasher is a GE Profile, model #GLD6860N00SS, s/n ZL764463B.

GE Profile Dishwasher Model PDW9980N20SS, S/N LR75956OB purchased July 28, 2008 from Clark Appliance in Indianapolis, Indiana. The dishwasher was empty and off, and had not been run for approximately eight hours. The heating element spontaneously started (without being pressed) and heated the interior to an extreme temperature. The interior plastic parts melted and dripped to the bottom. After I noticed what I thought was an electrical fire, I opened the door. The heating element in the bottom of the dishwasher was “red hot”. The START/RESET button was not on (lighted) and only the ADDED HEAT button was on (lit up). The top of the control panel, and the [REDACTED] counter top above the dishwasher were extremely hot. I turned off the circuit beaker to cut power to the dishwasher. I called the GE Appliance Recall number and was told my dishwasher was not included in their 2012 Recall (for dishwashers manufactured between 2006 and 2008).

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
Caller is reporting her dishwasher purchased August 16, 2008 from an appliance company in Florida. The caller had no problems with this dishwasher until June 28th, 2014 when he was preparing for bed while the dishwasher was running. He and his wife smelled smoke, returned to the kitchen, and realized that the dishwasher was extremely hot and had heated everything around it. The counter tops and cabinets were too hot to be able to touch. The caller opened the door to stop the dishwasher then immediately noticed a strong smell of melted plastic. After a few moments he could see that the rack that normally holds the flat-ware was melted, coffee cups had melted to a much smaller size and his flat-ware was lying on the bottom of the unit due to falling through the plastic unit when it melted.
There are no injuries to be reported
