No one hurt Made Aug 18, 2026, sent to the company Aug 21, 2026, published by CPSC Sep 8, 2026
The product, in the report: Front-load residential washing machine manufactured by Whirlpool. Stainless steel drum, high-efficiency design, stackable configuration, part of Whirlpools Duet-style front-load lineup. Model WFW95HEDU0, Serial C55250007, purchased December 7, 2016.
On August 2, 2026, my Whirlpool washing machine experienced a sudden and explosive mechanical failure during operation. The machine violently shook, produced a loud explosive sound, and internal components broke loose. Water discharged into multiple rooms, and an electrical odor was present during and after the event. This failure caused damage to surrounding flooring and created a significant risk of injury to anyone nearby. The washer had been operating under normal conditions and was not overloaded or misused. I contacted Whirlpool to report the incident. Their initial response was to offer a prorated replacement, which does not align with the severity of the safety hazard or the damages caused. I am concerned that this type of failure may indicate a defect or structural weakness that could pose risks to other consumers. I am submitting this report so the CPSC is aware of the incident and can determine whether further investigation or action is warranted. Product Information: Manufacturer: Whirlpool Product Type: FrontLoad Washing Machine Model Number: WFW95HEDU0 Serial Number: C55250007 Date of Purchase: December 7, 2016 Incident Date: August 2, 2026 Location of Incident: Philadelphia, PA Product Status: Still in possession Injuries: No physical injuries occurred, but the failure created a clear risk of harm. Damages: Damage to flooring, adjacent rooms, surrounding structures, and the appliance itself. Manufacturer Contact: Whirlpool was notified and offered a prorated replacement, which is not appropriate for a hazardous product failure.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool all in one combo WHIRLPOOL WASHER CASE# [REDACTED]
I have a whirlpool all in one combo and was able to open the locked door while the unit was in operation. When I brought it up to whirlpool they sent a technician out who could not replicate the concern I had but did generate 9 different error codes. I have seen numerous online complaints from other consumer complaints ranging from water leaks to fire hazards. Whirlpool is changing out the washer dryer combo I have but it has the same circuit board as the one I have now. The codes I have were F 7 and E 8.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Washer Top Load
On Friday 4/24/2026, had stated the load of clothes. She heard it go through the beginning cycles and then it was quiet. She went to look but noticed that it had not gone through the spin cycle. Then she heard a loud boom, and the washer began jerking in a diagonal and forward motion, and it hit her in the stomach and knocked her back. She called urgent care and they told her to come in if she had internal bleeding or other symptoms. Technician came on 4/27/26 out and said the spring snapped and the drum was not being controlled.

The product, in the report: WTW4957PW0, white washing machine by whirlpool
I had the washer for 15 months and the main drive blew causing oil or lubricant to get on the bottom of the machine and the floor. This could lead a fire. The seals and lubricant are all in an interior drive which is over $200 to replace. Seems like it was a problem with this model as multiple people had the same issue just over a year into the purchase. May cause a slip or fire hazard.

The product, in the report: Top load washer
I am a senior female purchased a whirlpool washer and dryer from Lowes on January 30, 2024 and up until recently it worked but last night I was awaken by it turning itself on and running without any lights on or even filling with water. It started to smell like it was too hot. No lights on the display so I had to unplug it for it to stop. I live in a large low income senior apartment and I now cannot leave the apartment unless I unplug it due to a fire hazard. It now will not even wash my clothes anymore so how can a less than 2 year old washer fail?

No one hurt Made Nov 4, 2025, sent to the company Nov 12, 2025, published by CPSC Nov 26, 2025
The product, in the report: Whirlpool white front loading washing machine, model WFW6720RW
I purchased a Whirlpool 6720 washing machine that was faulty. It was replaced only for me to receive another faulty machine. First, it sounds like something is loose inside the machine when it is spun by hand. It also makes a terribly loud grinding noise when spun by hand or during a cycle. The second machine had a serious control board issue where it would turn on and off of its own accord, and it had a problem with the drum that caused it to rock incessantly. Due to the control board issue, it locked itself once and didn’t want to open. The board itself does not look properly fitted to the machines. I’ve seen a third machine at an appliance store, and of course I wanted to see if my experience was a fluke. However, upon opening it and spinning the drum with my hand, I noticed the same noises which leads me to believe this is not simply a batch issue. Whirlpool would not provide the lot numbers for me to know if the 2 I received were made at the same time, but based on the dust on the one at the store, I’m guessing it’s been there even longer. I strongly feel this machine should be recalled before serious damage is done to someone or to a home due to whatever is faulty inside it. I did not feel at all safe running it. The original machine was received on 10/7/2025. The exchange on 10/28/2025. The one I saw in the store happened on 11/3/2025.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Washer Model WTW4855HW3 Serial CC1501839
Subject: Formal Complaint Regarding Whirlpool Washer Model WTW4855HW3 Serial CC1501839
To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to formally express my strong dissatisfaction with the Whirlpool top-load washer, model WTW4855HW3, serial number CC1501839, which I acquired in September 2023 as part of a new home purchase through a new home builder. The. appliance was included as a promotion with the purchase of a house and presented as a reliable, brand-new unit intended to meet the needs of a modern household.
Unfortunately, less than two years after installation, the washer has completely failed. The issues are as follows:
1. The unit becomes stuck in the drain/spin cycle immediately upon being plugged into an outlet. 2. None of the wash cycles can be startedbuttons are unresponsive. 3. Once powered, no wash cycle can be stopped or reset. 4. The lid no longer locks while in use. 5. The machine is constantly running when plugged (which could cause the outlet to overheat).
These failures render the washer unusable and suggest a serious defect in either the control board or pressure sensor system. I have since learned that Whirlpool issued Technical Service Pointer W11766193 in March 2025 for models with serial numbers beginning in CC, which includes mine. The bulletin reportedly addresses pressure sensor and drain pump issues consistent with my experience.
I believe it is deceptive and unfair to sell or distribute a product with such a short lifespan, especially when consumers reasonably expect major appliances to last 812 years. This situation has caused me significant inconvenience and undermined my trust in Whirlpool products.
I am requesting the following: - A full replacement of the defective unit or reimbursement for a comparable washer - A formal acknowledgment of the issue and confirmation of whether my unit qualifies under the service bulletin After calling Whirlpool, they do not want to help resolve the matter. They only want to sell me more products at added costs. This is the reason for filing the report. The washing machine was being used by the family of four, including adults, and children over the age of ten with adult supervision. The product was being used in a normal manner, washing loads that were typically less than 2.9 cu ft anywhere from once a week to three times/ week. Injuries that could have happened include fire hazards. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your response.
Sincerely, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Washer machine
The consumer was getting ready to go out, when he heard the washer turning on by itself. She tried to turn it off by pushing buttons, but it would not stop. She thinks maybe it was the pump or some internal damage because it did not stop moving. She had to unplug it to make it stop. However, if she plugs it back in, it keeps spinning and her concerns are that it could start a fire.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Model #WTW4955HW3 washing machine. White, top load, 3.8 cu. ft with soaking cycles
My Whirlpool washing machine, produced in 2023 (Model WTW4955HW3) and installed in November 2023, started entirely by itself while I was at work yesterday. No water was pumping, but the motor had been running for hours with the lid up. It was unresponsive to any buttons or dials. I had to unplug it to stop it. When I plugged it back in, the same nonstop churning/draining motor sound happened with no water, and it was unresponsive to anything on the control panel. It scared me to think of what could happen if I were gone for a longer period of time. Could it burn out? Start on fire? Start pumping water uncontrollably?

The product, in the report: Washer
Whirlpool washer starts and runs by itself. It is new and never been used. It is in a 2022 motor home that is parked in a RV garage connected to our house. This could have started a fire. Washers should not be able to start and run by itself. Lots of people have complained about this same issue. There needs to be a recall before someone gets hurt!

The product, in the report: Whirlpool top load washing machine
Whirlpool washing machine WTW4816FW3 control panel failure caused washing machine to run on its own. This washing machine was in light use less than a year. I noticed the smell of burning electrical components coming from the laundry room, then shortly thereafter there was a growling noise coming from the washing machine. After unplugging the washer, waiting a bit and plugging it back in, the washer would make a “click” and the growling noise would resume. The same thing happened when using the start button to reset the machine. When the washer was attempting to run on its own none of the cycle function lights were on. This is a fire hazard. The machine appears to be trying to continuously run the drain pump which will eventually overheat and catch fire.

Thought a fire may occur if the spinning kept on and pulled the power cord out. Waited 1hour and plugged cord in again. Same thing happened. Concern is this washer is in a separate part of the house in a laundry room. Why doesn’t the power button shut off the machine?

The product, in the report: White top-loading Whirlpool washer model WTW5000DW2, S/N C84449124
Whirlpool washer model WTW5000DW2 goes into violent shakes and jumps about 70% of the times it is used for washing, whether it is my wife or myself using it. As of lately I am the only one that uses it because my wife is very scared of using it. Once the washer starts to shake and jump it has to be stopped with the Start/Pause button, the laundry has to be rearranged in the washer and restarted. The washer is used only to wash standard household items- underware, night gowns, shirts, shorts, pants, sheets and towels. The washer was bought from Home Depot Nov. 30, 2018. I have reported the issue to Whirlpool Customer Care and I have been told that to avoid that problem the washer must be level and that only like items must be included in a wash load. I have checked and verified that the washer is level and attemped to wash only like items. However the problem persists.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool washing machine
Whirlpool washer automatic drain feature. My washer drain had an issue. I immediately hit pause/ hold 3 seconds to cancel as water was pouring from wall drain. All lights went off. Floor was flooded. As I was trying to sop up the water, the machine automatically began draining( it was supposed to be OFF ). Luckily, I was near enough to back door to pull drain hose to door so some of the water went out, as I was already standing in water, utility room flooded. This was a dangerous experience, I was literally hollering for help. The machine ( still off) continued to pump water. Im sitting on the floor frantic ( potential for electrocution) scared to move . Washer still plugged in. This automatic drain feature makes this a dangerous product . No one should trust these machines.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool washing machine model # WTW5000DW1 serial # C74842165. Top loading washing machine
I own a Whirlpool washing machine model # WTW5000DW1, serial # C74842165 that I purchased at a local big box store. I was washing a load today and I heard a loud banging sound coming from my garage. I found the machine slamming itself against the sink located next to it. I tried to open the lid to pause the machine but the lid was locked and would not open. I considered pulling the plug but the machine was slamming itself around so violently that my hand could have been crushed against the wall if I tried to pull the plug. The only thing I could do is lay my entire weight across the machine to try to stabilize it until the spin cycle was over. This worked, however when it was over the washing machine had pulled my garage sink from the wall and disconnected the sink’s drainage piping. My garage was flooded. I have a one-story house, however, had this happened in a 2nd or 3rd story unit, the flood would have ruined ceilings below it. I do not understand how a company like Whirlpool can sell such a defective and dangerous product. It would be a simple matter for a manufacturer to install a shut-off switch if a load becomes unbalanced during the spin cycle. It should be a regulation that all washing machines sold in America have this safety feature. This washing machine should be recalled and consumers compensated for their damages. I am fortunate that I was not injured trying to shut off / stabilize the machine.

The product, in the report: 27.5 in. 3.8 cu. ft. High-Efficiency White Top Load Washing Machine with Soaking Cycles
Whirlpool Washer Model: WTW4855HW3
Our Whirlpool washing machine becomes unbalanced incredibly easily and the wash bin violently slams the walls during the spin cycle if ANY heavy items are placed in it, even if it is fully balanced and the heavy setting is used. On May 14th we attempted to wash one blanket and the machine slammed so hard that the entire machine jumped 90 degrees and damaged itself and our vacuum next to it.
Luckily no one was injured as we do not have children and my wife and I were not near the machine during this cycle. However, this could easily crush small children or pets.
We have had multiple technicians who did not find any error codes and the issue still occurs after replacing the suspension.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Cabrio top-loading washing machine model WTW7300DW1 manufactured in 2017
I became shocked when running a Washing Machine. The washer is a Whirlpool Cabrio model WTW7300DW1 and was manufactured in 2017. The electrical shock occurred when I touched the cold-water supply hose fitting connected to the washer and the washer’s rear panel. The voltage difference between the hose fitting and panel was measured to be 84 VDC. During a wash cycles, up to 160 VDC difference was measured between the hose fitting and rear panel. The stray current was found to emanate from the thermistor in the water valve and travel through the water in the water valve assembly. When the thermistor power was disconnected, the voltage difference between the rear panel and water supply hose fitting was measured to be approximately 0 VDC. This testing demonstrates that a failure within the thermistor housing has allowed water penetration into the thermistor and the passage of leakage current to the water supply hose fitting. This failure not only represents a shock hazard, but can also result in rapid corrosion and fracturing of the water supply hose fitting itself.

I was in the livingroom talking with my daughter and heard a LOUD pop/bang sound and glass breaking. The inside washer door shattered. Glass (big pieces to tiny shards had scattered in about a 2 foot radius from the washer. House is airconditioned, nothing resting on or fell on the door. No one was injured, but if we had been in the laundry room, we could have been. I did step on a small shard of glass as I approached the washer / when I didn’t know what happened.

The washing machine was set up accordingly to guidelines. When the washing machine was put under operation, the controls for the different cycles were out timing, when it reached the spinning, the device was shaking so bad that it falls over, breaking the water tube and flooding my house. The same situation reoccurred on 3 April 2021. Efforts for Whirlpool to fix the problem ended up in “somebody will call.” This fall-over is a severe issue that can cause death to small children.

On August 6, 2020, our Whirpool front-loading washer (Model WFW92HEFW0) suffered a major internal failure and discharged a substantial amount of water. While some of this water was captured by the tub around the washer, a significant amount escaped and damaged the floor and drywall in the area. It also came close to electrical wiring, which could have resulted in shock or increased risk of fire.
This is in addition to earlier problems with the electronic control panel and the black mold issue in the rubber door molding.

Was washing a medium load of clothes in my Whirlpool Front Loader Model # WFW94HEXW2 last night and when it got down to 3 minutes left of the cycle, the washing machine exploded. It sounded like someone crashed a car into our house. Upon discovery of the cause of the sound, we realized what happened and could smell burning and immediately unplugged it. The 22 lb cement counterweight came shooting out of the unit and into my wall. That weight was literally attached to the unit with a piece of plastic. Needless to say the washer is completely ruined and upon some easy google searching we found that this has happened numerous other times and yet Whirlpool refuses to address it.

When I look inside the rubber belly on the inside of the door I notice it is loaded with mold! This is causing mold alleriges , skin issues and smelly clothes even after being washed in hot water with a good detergent. I had this issue with my previous machines as well. I never knew it was an ongoing issue until I started searching online for help. I clean my washer everytime after using and wipe the rubber rim out. I also leave the door open all the time.

Report No. [REDACTED]. A serviceman came here to check this machine and explained how to load this machine. We have used the machine 3 times since then. We had another out of balance experience. The machine was making a lot of noise, jumping up and down from side to side and walking across the floor. We repeatedly pressed the pause button but the machine would not stop despite holding the pause button in for far more than 3 seconds. Finally, I had to pull the plug. When the lid opened, there was a small fleece blanket and a pair of pajamas bunched up. We spread them out and replugged the machine. It started and reran the entire wash cycle. The machine had pulled out from the wall about 6 inches. Had we not been home who knows what might have happened. This machine is unsafe.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Washing Machine
We have a new Whirlpool washing machine and an electric dryer covered by a 5-year service contract. Model number WTW5000DW AND WED5000DW. About a month ago the washer went out of balance and started jumping around, side to side and up in the air about a 1/4 inch or more. We had a difficult time shutting it off. We pressed the Start/Pause button but it took a while to get the machine to stop. There were towels in the spin cycle that were clumped in one place. About 4 days ago this happened again. Again the machine started making a loud noise and the machine began jumping around and from side to side and up in the air a 1/4 inch or more. We again pressed the Start/Pause button holding it in but it took quite a while to shut the machine off. When the machine stopped, we opened the lid and one set of queen sheets was clumped together. My wife noticed shredded rubber on the floor on the right side of the machine. We called Whirlpool this afternoon and reported what had happened. They referred me to the Safety Department. Again I repeated what had happened and they set up a service call with GUINCO. I asked the woman in the Safety Department why this machine didn’t have an out of balance sensor and buzzer to notify the user. She replied that she wasn’t an engineer and could not answer this question. She admitted that these machines tend to jump around but are built to take it. In my opinion, this is a safety issue. The machine should have some way of shutting itself down. Imagine if we had been away when this happened. Who knows what might have happened? This seems to be a design issue and a violation of the Fitness for Particular Purpose. I request that you investigate this issue.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool front load washer silver in color. Model WFW6620HCO
Whirlpool Front Load washer is defective. First issue is jagged holes on the stainless steel basket. Safety issue since reaching in the washer you could incur a cut. The basket has already been replaced by the manufacturer. Second issue is the Front load washer is shaking terribly during spin cycles. This shaking causes the unit to move around which is another safety issue. I am concerned the violent shaking could cause the unit to flip over.

Caller reported that the front load washer door exploded while it was open. He stated that his spouse was sorting clothes to load the washer when the incident occurred, had she been any closer she would have been injured. The glass pieces from the door shattered all over the floor and inside the unit. The manufacturer was contacted and they advised him that they could send a technician out for inspection.
Caller is concerned about the safety hazard of this washer that can cause harm to consumers and should be reported.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Cabrio top loading washing machine.
Whirlpool Cabrio top loading clothes washer. This is a slowly evolving issue. The washer lid connection to the hinge is failing. The lid is mainly glass but the part connecting to the hinge is plastic. The plastic is cracking and now the lid won’t stay up unless it is propped. My fear is that the lid will eventually break away and fall to the floor. I believe that this could cause injury, either due to the weight of the lid or the breaking of the glass.

The product, in the report: Top loading washing machine
We have a Whirlpool washing machine. Occasionally the machine will get off balance during the spin cycle and vibrate violently and even move from it’s location. There seems to be no automatic cutoff switch to stop this cycle when this happens. We believe in our previous machines the machine automatically stopped. The only way we have to stop this problem is to push a stop button for 3 seconds and this does not immediately brake the spinning, it continues coasting down. It is scary to even get close enough to the machine to push this stop button. The machine is balanced and on solid tile.
We have talked with a Whirlpool representative and they say they can find no information about their machine having an automatic cutoff. This is a dangerous situation that can easily be prevented with an automatic stop switch to stop the machine when it begins to violently vibrate. We have seen pictures and read stories about these machines exploding and even causing bodily injury, so this is not an isolated incident. This is a safety problem.

The drain and spin cycle has stopped working on my Whirlpool washer. AS a result, I have to run the drain&spin cycle several times after the wash is done to get the clothes even remotely spun. The serious danger however is that during the drain&spin cycle the washer lid does NOT lock, allowing someone to accidentally open the lid while it is spinning! Incident: At the end of wash, when sensor light indicated “done” I opened lid and (as usual) the drain & Spin had not worked, so clothes were soaked wet. I then turned the dial to drain& spin and while the lid was still open the washer started spinning. While lid was open! And while my hand was adjusting clothes in washer. Very dangerous!

The product, in the report: WHIRLPOOL WASHING MACHINE ROPER MODEL # RTW4640YQ0 SERIAL # C22824051
Washing Machine has been lately malfunctioning in a hazardous manner; During the spin cycle, it will bounce around violently and cannot be shut down. The lid is locked and cannot be opened, even if the unit is unplugged. If unplugged while running, it can cause an electric arc an possibly an electrocution and fire. The excessive vibration can possibly cause injury or death to the housewife. Formerly, when this vibration occurs, the lid could be opened and the spin cycle would stop. the imbalance could be corrected by simply rearranging the clothes and restarting the machine. If this dangerous condition is not corrected , sooner or later someone, probably a housewife, may be injured or killed and/ or the home and plumbing destroyed. I have tried to contact the Whirlpool and Roper people to no avail, but perhaps your office can reach the. I urge you to use to use your influence to remedy this potentially dangerous situation. A national Recall of all Whirlpool and Roper models as named in this complaint should be done, and all Whirlpool/ Roper customers be provided with safe machines free of charge.

My wife was washing a mattress pad in our Whirlpool washer and the washer went into the drain/spin cycle it got out of balance and flew violently into the wall breaking the drywall with such force that the front of the washer crinkled/dented and the basket inside the washer became detached and was laying in the cabinet at about a 70 degree angle. The washer continued to run and make a grinding metal on metal sound. It finally stopped grinding but the pump wouldn’t shut off. I had to unplug the washer to get it to stop.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Washing Machine from around 2012.
Last week I was filling a bucket of water with the shower head and when I went to test the temperature of the water by dipping my finger in I got a mild electrical shock. Initially I thought maybe it was static so i touched it again and it was definitely AC electric (a feeling that I am relatively familiar with.
Immediately I went and shut off the power to the house and then the water (since I didn’t want to risk touching the tap again). Then using a non-contact voltage detector I checked for live current on the shower head. With power to the house off there was no live current.
I flipped the breaker for the washing machine off and then turned on the master breaker again. Still no live current on the shower head, valve, or bucket of water. When I flipped the washing machine breaker back on there was initially no current. Then when I turned the washing machine on (using the soak cycle + a little bit of bleach and soap) both of my non-contact voltage detectors were triggered when checking the shower handle (a metal part). At this point I was fairly certain that the issue was related to the machine machine so I started to try different things. I used an alligator clip to connect the live (red) lead of my multimeter to the drain of the washer (before the airgap) and connected the neutral (black) lead to ground. When the cycle began there was initially no current for a few seconds then when a solenoid inside (I assume it was a solenoid, it wasn’t the lock) clicked, the multimeter detected 100 VAC (likely not 120 because of resistance) on the drain. I have not yet tested for voltage or continuity on the water input lines.
I realized that the washing machine was not on a GFCI, so I installed and tested a GFCI outlet (with both the built in function as well as a dedicated GFCI test tool). I tested the washing machine another time and again detected 100 VAC on the drain, the GFCI was never triggered.
There is continuity between the body of the washing machine and the ground, so it is definitely grounded properly.
I have unplugged the washing machine and put a warning label and ziptie on the plug (so it cannot be plugged into a receptacle). I have also attached another warning label and a lock to the door that prevents it from being closed by anyone who tries to use the washing machine while there is still a fault.
I contacted Whirlpool support and let them know about the issue. I have also ordered a new pump for the machine since that seems to me like the most likely cause. Multiple safety features failed here or did not exist, and had I decided to to my laundry an hour earlier I’d have killed whatever family members that were showering. In the mean time I’ll be using a laundromat until I find the definite cause. and implement a ground connection between the water input and the GFCI.
The water inside of the machine should have been grounded, however, it was not. The machine either did not include any safety mechanism to prevent this, or the features failed.
If WhirlPool would like to take this machine to diagnose the issue, I’m okay with that provided they do so for free and provide a washing machine to use in the meantime.

I cannot keep black mold from forming in inaccessible places where the detergent dispenser goes. I contacted Whirlpool previously and was told the product is fine but I should use Afresh more often on the special ‘cleaning’ cycle. THE WASHER IS NOT FINE, I CANNOT MITIGATE THE BLACK MOLD EVEN WITH CLOROX BLEACH. AFRESH DOES NOT SOLVE THIS PROBLEM. I think this is a design problem because the mold forms in areas that can be seen, but cannot be reached with normal cleaning materials.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool WTW7800XW 27” Top-Load Washer with 5.2
We purchased this washing machine in 2011. Around 2014 we filed a complaint because the lid was cracked and would not operate. After doing some research we found many sites that listed this issue as a serious and repetitive problem with Whirlpool Cabrio washing machine. Whirlpool contact us and resolved the issue by installing a new lid at no charge. However, this time the lid shattered and glass was everywhere including in the clothes. This is a serious problem that is happening to the majority of whirlpool cabrio owners. These lids are not safe. Had myself or my children been injured by the washer while it shattered we could have been seriously injured. I received cuts on my hands and arms while trying to get our clothes out of the glass filled machine. I do have photos of the machine as I found it. The lids are breaking and shattering approximately 1-3 years after use.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Duet front end loader
My front end load washer smells like mold. We purchased a whirlpool duet in 2008. The smelly problem started in the first 6 months of owning the machine. We reported the problem to whirlpool and were told to purchase tide washing machine cleaner and to run our washer on the extra hot cycle at least once a week to eliminate the smell. We did this and the smell returned within just a few days, and after spending several hundred dollars using washing machine cleaners, we gave up since they really did not correct the issue. We bought the machine partly for its energy efficiency which is obvious there is no energy/water savings when you have to run extra cycles every other day to minimize the smell it leaves on your clothes. You never quite get rid of the smell either; it’s always there. We spend additional money on the scented laundry beads as well as fabric softners to try and mask the disgusting odor left on our clothing. My daughter developed serious allergies about a year after purchasing this machine and I also believe it attributed to the breakdown of her immune system. whirlpool did nothing other than to pass the buck back onto us, the consumer. We have always left the door open, when not in use, and I constantly clean the nasty mold from the rubber piece as well as run several super hot empty cycles with bleach every week to attempt to control the mold smell. This is by far one of the worst purchases we have ever made, and I believe they knew of this mold issue for a very long time, since we found countless complaints on the smell.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Cabrio HE Washer, WTW7800X, white, with glass lid.
I have a Whirlpool Cabrio WTW7800X with a glass lid. The glass piece started separating from the molding of the lid when it was only about a year old. I have had to weight it down with full paint cans as it will cause the lid lock to malfunction and the washer won’t operate. It has now cracked and will eventually shatter, causing shards of glass to fall into my laundry, which would be dangerous for both me and my children.I checked online for a replacement lid, costing over $200, and while researching I found literally hundreds of other complaints, with several saying Whirlpool refuses to acknowledge the problem or the danger. This was an $800 washer and it shouldn’t have broken this quickly. Given the hazard the broken glass poses I feel this product should be subject to recall and Whirlpool to have to provide replacement parts.

I purchased a washing machine that had known mold issues. I did research and they stated that if I clean with bleach and keep the door open between washes then I would not have a problem. Now the rubber seal is completely covered with black mold. I can’t clean it off with anything. I am concerned about the safety of washing my clothes in a mold filled appliance. I have only had this appliance for 2 years. My previous appliance was also a front load washer that I had for 10 years and did not have a problem with mold at all. My current washer is a Whirlpool Duet.

The product, in the report: White Whirlpool front loading duet sport washing machine.
I recently purchased a gently used front loading washing machine. I had absolutely NO idea that there was anything hiding inside of the rubber gasket. I got it home, hooked it up and ran a cycle of laundry through the machine. When I opened the door to remove the clothes, there was a very strong and distinct mildew/damp odor. The clothes all were stinky and were not clean because of the smell. I began examining the machine closer and saw residual water and soap bubbles in the gasket crease. I used a towel and wiped the area out and the towel produced some dirt and stinky old soap residue. I then got a flashlight and parted open the gasket crack to see what was in there and it was covered in black mold. My entire family suffer from significant allergies to dust, pollen, mold and pet hair. I am now unable to use this washing machine despite cleaning and bleaching and using powerful smell boosters in the machine to try to kill the mildew smell that the clothes have.

i have the the Whirlpool duet steam washing machine. when i bought this machine it was very expensive and i expect when i spend a lot of money on something it is going to last for years. My old washer lasted over 20 years and never had a problem with it. I am getting a huge mold built up in my machine no matter what i do to avoid this its still happening. i clean this machine regularly with Refresh, Clorox and Clorox wipes. I always leave door open when I’m done with the machine and still have a disgusting build up in and around the front rubber piece. Most of the time my clothes come out smelling like mold at 1st i didn’t know what that smell was. Now theres no question what the smell is since you can see the black build up in and around the front rubber. Hoping someone will help me. i paid a lot of money for this machine and its only 3 or 4 years old. Very upsetting!!!

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Duet Clothes Washer, 2013
I purchased a Whirlpool Duet Washer in May 2013. I have never owned a front loading washer before this one and asked the sales people about any special instructions. They told me to keep the front door open when not in use to prevent moisture in the drum area. I have done that. The problem I am having is with the soap, bleach and fabric conditioner area of the washer. There is signs of mold all over the trays and inside the channel to the inner part of the machine. We have used bleach on the mold and we have run a cleaner, called “Affresh,” into the machine. The drum appears to be clean but mold in the dispenser area is still evident.
I have noted a number of comments on the web about mold growth in front load washers, specifically in Whirlpool machines. There are articles stating that this “was” a problem with older machines. It appears to still be a problem.
I have contacted the Whirlpool dealer and expect to follow up with a lawsuit for this obvious problem.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Duet Sport HT Front Loader Washing Machine
I was diagnosed with a mold allergy towards the end of 2012. I’ve continued to have symptoms despite removing (or so I thought) all the sources of mold throughout our house. As it turns out, our Whirlpool Duet Sport HT washing machine (front loader) has a horrible mold odor coming from it. Unfortunately I can’t seem to find the source. I’ve been diligent about cleaning the machine as recommended by the manufacturer, yet it is still pungent. It seems to be getting worse in conjunction with the violent shaking it goes through during the spin cycle.
We purchased the machine back in 2008 from a local appliance store. Unfortunately, our warranty has expired and we no longer know what to do. I contacted Whirlpool tonight via email to see what their response will be - I doubt they will do anything though, just like they didn’t fix anything when our machine was still under warranty. I’m concerned this machine is unhealthy for not only myself, but my family as well.

The issue involves mold formation which appears to be an ongoing issue with this product that is known by the manufacture.
My wife and I owner a Whirlpool Duet front loading automatic washer and dryer. We have been very happy with the performance of the appliances thus far but have a major issue with the washer door seal.
Initially we called your service center and were told that a problem that was common was mold formation on the door seal but that it could be minimized and controlled by following the recommended maintenance procedure which involved cleaning the seal and using [REDACTED] on a regular basis.
All preventive and routine recommendations have been followed but the mold on the door seal remains and is getting worse. Aside from the horrible aesthetic appearance of the seal, I believe that this poses a potential health problem from the family. We have owned numerous washing machines over the years and have had to address mechanical breakdowns or wear and tear but never had a problem of this nature that could affect the health and well-being of family members.

Then it started shaking and rocking. She says that it is supposed to have a self balancing feature. She went to the retailer who told her they cannot do anything since it was purchased over 6 months ago. The consumer tried to contact the manufacturer. She was on hold for three hours and got disconnected.
She said recently it was rocking so badly she was afraid to get near it to shut the power off. She was able to shut the power off and that is when water leaked through the front of the washer.
She said this washer is currently part of a lawsuit due to molding.

Hope I am on the correct site to email rea defective washing machine.
Doing laundry on Nov. 16, this machine blew a fuse. Model WTW57008WO, Serial No. CW0322055. I keep a lighted gadget plugged into the same socket as the washer for just such a purpose. Noting that the light was out, I checked my fuse box and saw the fuse had blown.
At suggestion of Lowes Lewisville,Texas, where I bought washer and dryer on same date 3/11/08, Washer $448, I contacted In Home Appliance Repair of Justin,Texas, [REDACTED]. They came Nov. 20, 2012. One serviceman said the washer looked new. As a single person household, the washer was not used more than every other week. Serviceman wrote this diagnosis on the trip ticket (charge $65). FOUND THE MOTOR IS BURNED UP. THE GEAR CASE IS ALSO BAD WHICH PROBABLY MADE THE MOTOR TO GO OUT. FAILURE OF GEAR CASE UNKNOWN. EST. $500 RECOMMEND TO REPLACE WASHER DUE TO COST OF REPAIR. Signed by [REDACTED].
I do believe that a fire could have occurred had the fuse not blown to stop the appliance. Whirlpool only offered Repair+ 1 for $356.39 and gave me exactly 24 hours to accept or decline. The 1 is a year’s warranty. The motor was not visible to me until the repairmen removed the cover. Nothing I did, no misuse by me, could have caused the motor to burn up.
This washer is defective. Repairman told me it is a very rare occurrence--this motor burn problem. I believe, therefore, that Whirlpool should replace this defective washer. Perhaps you can determine from them how often they had a similar complaint. I found you by looking at their recall site.
Whirlpool sent me a survey which I just completed all negative. Survey was sent to me by [REDACTED], Director, Consumer Care, phone [REDACTED]. They are open 8 am to 8 pm EST weekdays. I would be very appreciative if you could follow up on this complaint and save others from the same or worst--a fire. Thank you very much. [REDACTED]. Please note that I shop at Lowes Lewisville, NOT Flower Mound store which I do not like- dark and low ceilings. Employees have told me they hear that lots of times from customers. Thanks for being there for us.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Duet Electric Steam Dryer, Item # 12057, Description # WED9270XW, purchased 12/01/10 [REDACTED]
Shock hazard. The top-mount steam dryer began leaking copious amounts of water from inside the dryer drum, while the dryer was running. The water filled the drum, ran out of the dryer vent, and also ran out from the body of the dryer into the body of the washing machine below it, which was also running. This caused a short to occur in the washing machine and damaged the electronics. We had to access the electrical main box to cut the power to the washer and dryer, as the dryer remained on while leaking and while standing in water.

The product, in the report: Duet front load steam washer machine
The consumer says she has had a rash on the top of her leg. She saw her dermatologist who told her it looks like an allergic reaction. She visited an allergist, who couldn’t determine what she was allergic too. When she went away on vacation about two months ago and her and her husband, started feeling better. Recently 6 of her nails have come off. The consumer feels that the problem stems from mold build up in the tub of the washing machine. she says its hard to see inside the unit, but is noticeable in the clothes. She has also seen several reports out on this particular product for this issue. The consumer says her husband also has had nails issue and with the bottom of their feet and hands. Also there is a rotten egg smell emitting from the washer. She contacted the manufacturer about a year ago, who told her there is no known problems with the unit. They have since then offered a replacement. They said they have to order the new washer, and are awaiting the replacement to set a schedule with her. Consumer Added: The receptionist from “The Appliance Doctor” contacted me shortly after I filed this report. She stated that Whirlpool was now refusing to replace the (door, kid, belt and inner gasket), because of the cost of labor. (This was going to take 2 hours.) Two days earlier they assured me they would replace these parts--They stated that the decision came from corporate. 3/21/12 The bellow was replaced--The machine still smells like mold--The same issue with the laundry--my rash is still there--I have chills--metalic taste--pins and needles all over--
This Washing machine is a health hazard! I feel that my family’s health has been jepordised by this mold issue. My doctor advised me to discontinue use. Please help to hold Whirlpool accountable. [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Duet frontload washer
I have a whirlpool frontload duet washer and have trouble with mold build up in the washer which leaves my clothes unclean, smelly and has caused health issues with my family. I contacted whirlpool and all they suggested was the “clean” my washer. I have cleaned it with [REDACTED] and the mold is still there. They state that is a soap build up problem and that they will only have a repairman come inspect it, but other than that, there is nothing they will do. I paid a great deal of money for this washer and yes I have had it for a while and have exhausted all avenues of trying to fix the problem myself. When that didnt help, I contacted whirlpool with no help from them. I have researched this on the internet and this is an ongoing problem with mold issues for these washers, which I feel that whirlpool should be liable for. Mold is a serious problem and can cause serious health issues which they should be responsible for replacing the washer. Even if their “technician” came out and replaced the rubber inside, the problem would still return over time, thus causing more mold. My clothes have been ruined, my towels smell like dirty dogs when drying off from a shower and my kids health is at steak, and whirlpool seems to not care. [REDACTED], the manager I spoke with, stated they had no mold issues. If not, then whats with all the posts from consumers all over the internet? I contacted them on 1-10-12 but the issue has been going on for years with this washer. I am very disappointed in whirlpool and do not recommend their products or any front load washer for that matter.

Whirlpool washer WFW8300SW03 was purchased about 3-4 years ago. About 1 year later we started to notice black mold build up on the unit. We would use bleach to clean it off. It would always come back stronger. I started to have health problems shortly after the mold started to appear. I was diagnosed with vertigo. I also had sinus issues which she never had before as well. It wasn’t until tonight that we realized the connection of the mold and health issues.

The product, in the report: whirlpool duet washer front load high efficiency
I have a whirlpool duet washer, model number # GHW9400PW4. The washer is only a few years old maybe about 5 years at the max. Ever since the first load of wash i have had a mold problem in this washer. Since it is a front load washer there is a rubber gasket around the door; this gasket grows black mold and mildew at an extremely fast rate. We clean our washer twice a month with bleach wipes but the mold comes back almost immediately. Also there is a drawer in the front of this washer, in which you put the soap, and the drawer and compartment it slides into also becomes covered in black mold. I am highly allergic to black mold, it causes asthma attacks and promotes sinus infections, black mold is a very serious health risk. In order to try and prevent this mold from growing we allow adequate air flow into the washer by leaving the door open and soap drawer open. I contacted whirlpool about this and they were very unconcerned about the potential health risk this poses. the incident date is the beginning of this problem and it has continued from years. when searching online i found hundreds or thousand of people with the same problems. this has also caused my clothes to stink and some had to be put in the trash due to being ruined

Have had problems with it holding water in the soap dispenser, mold mildew smells, not draining out all of the water, leaking after putting in a new seal around door. Why has there not be a recall on this item? Or a fix to the problem, I have tried everything to make the smell go away and I have cleaned out the hoses and it still is having draining issues.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool HE duet washing machine
The consumer wanted to report that her washing machine produces a high level of mold and mildew under her washing machine. The consumer feels that this is the byproduct of a design flaw. The consumer stated that the gasket inside of the machine is about 5 inches wide and it causes a pocket water that causes mold and mildew to accumulate. The consumer has done some independent research and found that this is a persistent problem with this model. The consumer stated that the washing machine does emit a smell. The consumer has had this problem soon after buying the machine in 2007.
The consumer called the firm a month ago and was directed to the executive assistant. She spoke to her 2 weeks ago and her response was that the consumer had fabricated the complaint and she had not taken proper care of the product. The firm stated that they have never heard of this issue. The consumer stated that the issue has caused an odor to her clothes. The consumer stated that no one has gotten sick as a result of this issue. The product is a front loaded washer. The consumer has yet to contact the seller of the product. The product shows no physical damage to the product and has not damaged her home. The consumer has not consulted an indoor air quality specialist.
