    My Kenmore washing machine (model 29272001, SN 205KWHX59281) caught on fire when turning it on. Flames and smoke came out of the rear so we unplugged it immediately. In trying to get the clothes that had washed out, we plugged it back in to unlock the lid, but there was a course noise upon hitting the power button and flames and smoke immediately returned. There were no injuries and we narrowly avoided a fire in the house.

    Kenmore stackable washer/dryer model # 110.81432510 The heating vent gets way too hot and melts the material of the clothes to it. The holes then get melted pieces stuck to it which are sharp and spikey and those small pieces put small holes in all of my clothes. Worried it will start a fire eventually also.. I tried dealing with it but its getting worse where I have to chisel the pieces off of it.. Happens even on medium heat setting and Ive burned myself numerous times

    10/6/2024: The washer became stuck in the drain cycle. He can hear the vacuum motor, but the washer will not move.

    He tripped the breaker for a few minutes, unplugged the washer and plugged it back into the wall outlet. When he turned the washer back on, it was stuck on that same cycle.

    He then repeated those steps for approximately 15 - 20 minutes, but the washer was still stuck. If this was left unattended, the washer’s motor could run continuously and possible lead to a fire. When he first noticed the issue, he had no idea how long it was stuck on that cycle. However, he started his last load of clothes nearly 2 hours prior to discovering the issue.

    10/7/2024: He called the manufacturer’s Customer Service Number. Their rep. told him that they could send a technician out for $119.00 to diagnose the issue. The consumer noted that he did not want to pay for this repair, because he did not cause it, and the machine was purchased last year. He asked to speak with a higher authority. He was told that he would be directed to their Escalations Department but was not able to speak with a person.

    The consumer later called a number for the brand name company and spoke with [REDACTED], who suggested that he call CPSC’s Hotline.

    Kenmore Elite front load washing machine purchased in April 2018 started on fire after completing a cycle. The fire stayed contained inside the machine prior to being sprayed with an extinguisher. While on fire, the smoke from the machine filled the home and went out the front door. After calling Kenmore, Sears, and Sears Home Services no one seemed to take action. I was told by the technician that he wasn’t a fire expert and could not determine where it started but probably wiring. He took pictures and everything inside was melted. Someone in scheduling said they have had many calls and they think there should be a recall. So far no one will help me and the service is awful. Automated transfers with no one really helping that has any authority. Firemen said the house would have burned if we weren’t there.

    I had a top loading Kenmore washer. When washing a mattress protector sheet about 20 minutes into the wash I heard a loud bang, I went into the room to find that the top part of the washer was on the ground still plugged into the wall apart from the base of the washer, and the washer had turned a 180 turn without warning. When I walking back in the room the machine gave the finished beeps and unlocked the lid. I found all of the connectors sprung across the room and water on the floor.

    (09/26/2022) The consumer was washing a load of clothes. Midway into the wash cycle, there was a error message. The consumer and her daughter started troubleshooting per instructions in the manual. They unplugged the unit. After 10 minutes, they plugged it back in to restart the machine. The machine’s lights came back on but they were flickering. There was a popping sound inside of the machine, then there was smoke. The machine was unplugged again. Five minutes later as the consumer walked pass the room where the machine was located, she saw flames coming from the bottom of the unit.

    The consumer called 911. The fire department came out and distinguished the flames. They had to carry the unit outside because there was still something inside of the unit that was still on fire. It was determined that the fire was in the mechanism area.

    All of the plastic inside of the unit has melted.

    The consumer contacted the firm and was told that the product was out of warranty and advised the consumer to contact CPSC.

    My husband & I were in the kitchen cooking & heard a loud pop. He walked into the laundry room & saw the washing machine lid was shattered & busted. Glass was all down inside the washing machine as well. As the machine sat you could hear the glass continue to fall & we watched it completely collapse. We were fortunate no grand children, pets, or ourselves were cut or injured. It was a nightmare cleaning & I’m sure the machine is ruined with all the glass pieces that went into the drum that the shop vac did not get. I had dry articles of clothing inside which made it much more difficult.

    • The washer had never been serviced in the past.

    However, the consumer has to wiggle the power cord, to get a spark, in order to start the washer. Sometimes this worked, but in other instances, this needed to be done more frequently. It got worse over time and now she has to do this most times the washer is used.

    The consumer searched the Internet and found that there is an issue with the control board.

    She called the manufacturer and the brand name company, but various rep’s (names unavailable) have told her that they would have to send a technician out at her expense. Once they inspected the machine, they would repair the washer, but the consumer had to cover the cost.

    The consumer found a recall that was issued the firm, without cooperation of CPSC.

    The service technician told her that the control board just needs to be replaced to address this issue.

    The consumer has to hoist herself and lay across the metal machine and jiggle the cord in order to operate it. This presents a definite electric shock hazard and a fall hazard.

    Within the first couple years of purchase, the basket fell down inside the washer. The consumer called the manufacturer and they sent an authorized technician out to work on the washer. There was no charge. For the repair.

    Approximately 1- 2 years later, the same problem occurred. However, the consumer’s husband was able to do the same repair that the manufacturer’s technicians had done previously.

    Approximately 1- 2 years later, the exact same problem occurred a 3rd time. The husband repaired the washer again himself (2nd time). The problem is that the rods, which support the washer’s basket, fail.

    Furthermore, the washer gets out of balance very easily and will move across the floor. The consumer has had to either sit on the washer to keep it from moving or wash clothes with ½ the capacity in the machine. Any amount larger than ½ capacity, can cause the washer to move.

    The washer is nearing the point where the rods will fail again.

    The consumer called the firm’s recall (CPSC# 13-073), Tel: (800) 659-7026, And spoke with a rep. (name unavailable). The rep. told her that they could set up a repair, but she would have to pay the repair fee. The consumer declined that offer, because they have been repairing the washer themselves.

    The product may be included in CPSC Recall# 13-073, but the consumer did not have her serial number.

    I washed clothes on a Sunday night all was well. Come Monday, I heard a loud explosion. I went all over the house and finally made it the laundry room. To my dismay our Kenmore Elite Washer lid exploded there was glass shards on top of our dryer and all over the laundry room. I immediately called our home warranty they came reviewed it and wrote a report. I noticed a a safety recall regarding this product and called them as well. I was redirected to Sears, they came out stated this is a known issue. They couldn’t repair and would have to order a part for the lid recall. I advise that there’s glass inside the washer. I believe this is a safety risk to my family. They put in the order on 6/18, I’ve tried contacting the manufacturer and recall centers to have this issue resolved. It’s been 2 months that I’ve been out of a washer. This washer is certainly a safety risk to my family and others. It should be taken off the market and with any recall the manufacturer should replace it.

    2/2021: The washer started leaking water underneath and shaking excessively. Prior to this incident, the consumer never had any problems with the washer. He called [REDACTED].

    2/12/2021: [REDACTED], sent out a technician, who examined the machine. The tech. (name unavailable), told the consumer that he could not work on the machine, because it was under CPSC Recall# 13-073.

    NOTE: He purchased the machine from Sears, but they have been closed for several years.

    2/12/2021: The consumer called Sears Customer Service, and they sent out an authorized technician.

    3/18/2021: The manufacturer authorized technician came and applied the recall remedy repair, to the machine (Service Order # [REDACTED]). Once the technician installed the replacement rods, the machine sounded better than it had before. It was definitely a lot quieter, but the tech. did not fill it with water before leaving.

    3/20/2021: The consumer tried the washer 2 days after the repair, and when it reached the “spin” cycle, water started pooling up on the floor, underneath the machine. At that point, he stopped using it.

    He is concerned this could present an electrical or fire hazard.

    The glass lid on my washing machine shattered. It is a Kenmore elite washer. No one was using the product at the time and it hadn’t been used at all this day. No one was injured, but easily could have been injured if they had been close to the washer when this happened. Nothing touched the machine or caused this to happen.

    The washing machine exploded while it was in use and it had been on for approximately 20 - 30 minutes.

    The top flew completely off of the washer. Several sides of the washer were dented and several pieces were broken and landed on the floor. The damage was limited to the washer itself. The washer also moved out of place as a result of this incident.

    The consumer never had any problems with the washer prior to this incident.

    The consumer was washing a king size, (terry cloth) mattress cover (with a very thin plastic backing) that is used on a [REDACTED] mattresses and 3 T-shirts and 1 pillow case. This mattress cover was designed specifically for this type of mattress.

    The consumer’s husband moved the washer to the outside, back portion of their home.

    I got a Kenmore front loader washing machine I believe this is a problem with most front loaders, but mine about caught completely on fire today it was about halfway through the cycle and it got a jacket caught in the door after it was running fine.... it was spinning for quite some time when the house started smelling like burning motor oil I go downstairs and I see the washer is running I open it and smoke comes out, my new [REDACTED] jacket caught fire. The jacket was rubbed raw so much that it had seized to the metaldrum and it was dry on my wool jacket where it rubbed... I believe it was keeping a portion of the drum dry while it was spinning for 15-20 minutes. I’m lucky I caught it as early as I did, this could’ve easily been a house fire.

    No one was using it. No one was in the room. We were in a dinning room waiting to frost cake and we heard a large commotion. We thought someone was breaking into our house. But it turned out to be the washing machine spontaneously exploding in the laundry room. There was glass everywhere. My husband cut himself cleaning it up

    Sears knows of this issue because [REDACTED] does. It is apparently called “spontaneous glass shattering” Sears is useless. When I finally got a person who could help me, I was transferred over and over to an external property damage company. They will send an investigator to determine who is at fault...sears or [REDACTED]...when they get around to me. It’s Christmas, don’t I know. You better believe I know it’s christmas

    I had to buy a replacement washer because sears will not send a replacement door and cannot say when the investigator will come. My units are stacked, so it had to be an identical unit or both washer and dryer need to be replaced. Sears is gone from my area but SEARS outlet exists and they had a [REDACTED] that is my Kenmore with a different nameplate.

    This report is about a Kenmore Elite Oasis Type 580, model 110.27062600 top loading washing machine. Last night I was running a load of laundry in the washing machine. My family and I were in a different area of the house. We heard a sound like loud thunder followed immediately by what sounded like a bomb exploding and the house shook. I ran toward the source of the sound and saw the washing machine looked like it had exploded, with the sheet metal sides twisted and forced outward. The back steel panel was blown loose, and the lid and top frame were attached only at the back corner. There were machine parts and broken pieces of shrapnel scattered throughout the room, along with dirt and lubricating grease from the washer parts. Some of the wet clothes were located on the floor behind the drum. The tray for dispensing detergent and softener was ejected forward onto the floor. The washer rotated sideways and punched a 12 inches wide by 8 inches tall hole in the wall, and there was another smaller hole by the baseboard below. The gas dryer had serious damage from the impact and is inoperable. Next to the far side of the dryer there was a steel clothes rack that had a leg broken by the force of the dryer impacting it. After seeing the damaged dryer, I ran to the basement to shut off the gas and then came back and turned off the water supply lines and unplugged the power cords. The washer had been functioning normally and there was no warning or sound before the incident occurred. This washing machine normally is very quiet. We are in a tight spot financially with needing a new washing machine and dryer, hiring someone to repair the wall, needing to replace some damaged and stained clothes, and taking off work to clean up and go shopping. My family was shook up by the experience but we are grateful that no one was in that room when it happened and no one was hurt.

    Exploding glass lid on Kenmore Elite Washer Model #31632 (second instance)

    Purchased 12/30/2017, Delivered approximately 1/5/2018.

    On the morning of 03/09/2018 the glass lid on the washer exploded with glass shards both inside and through out the laundry area (floors, etc). The washer was not running and was empty. Sears replaced the glass lid by 3/21/2018.

    On the evening of 09/02/2019 the replacement glass lid of the same washer exploded sending glass shards both inside and outside the machine and laundry area. The washer was not running. In calling Sears for service, I was informed that the one-year warranty on the washer had expired. They expressed zero concern that this is the second incident.

    We have not stored items on either glass lid, nor have we ever stood on the glass lid. No metal items have ever been placed in the washer causing a strike on the interior (i.e. belts).

    This product is unsafe, has a history or shattering/exploding through my cursory research and should be recalled.

    At approximately 11:35pm on May 4, 2019, I was awaken to a loud crashing noise, followed by a crackling sound. I followed the crackling sound to my laundry room and found the lid to my washer had spontaneously shattered. We had the lid up because we had been doing laundry 5 hours earlier and was letting the washer dry. The shattered glass remain in the frame of the lid, with a few shards of glass on the floor, in front of the washer. I lowered the lid and there were a few shards of glass near the back of the lid where some had popped out.

    I googled “Kenmore elite shattered glass” and found pictures, videos, and complaints from other people dating back to 2016. This problem has been going on for awhile.

    We never sit anything on our washer and nothing had dropped onto it. Again, the lid was open when the incident occurred.

    Caller reported that the top load washer was in use, it had completed the cycle he tried to open the lid which seemed to have been pressurized. In opening the glass lid it exploded shattering glass pieces that projected to his face and body. Caller stated that tiny pieces of glasses got stuck in both of hands while he tried to protect his face. He stated that he able to wash off the glass debris and use tweezers to pick out the pieces of glass from his hands. No medical attention was received.

    (2/23/19) The manufacturer was contacted and a service technician sent out, he was informed by the technician that he was unable to repair the unit, the incident was rare and that someone could have damaged the unit.

    This consumer is contacting the hotline and creating this report on behalf of her parents who are both in the 80’s and who purchased the washer being reported May 2017 from retailer in Maine. December 27th, 2018 the caller’s mother noticed that the washer had started up on its own as if it were attempting to drain water out that was not in it. The washer was not in use before it began on its own any time. When the incident occurred in the late night she disconnected the washer because although it was running there were no light on + no way to turn washer off. Had to unplug it. The morning of December 28th, 2018 when the caller’s mother reconnected the washer it started back up again although she did not turn it on. (Started up again after being plugged in for several minutes and my mom heard the washer start up on its own.) She contacted the retailer because she did observe that this washer could be a severe fire hazard especially if they were sleeping or out of the house when it began running by itself. The caller has stated that there are no injuries. The manufacturer has been contacted but so far has offered nothing,

    My front load clothes washing machine continues to have the smell of mold and mildew after washing clothes. I have tried bleach, does not work; Clorox wipes on the inside seal, does not work; dryer sheets, does not work; removing the seal and cleaning it, does not work; and finally replacing detergent with different brands, does not work. I purchased the product based on the knowledge that it was the most effective resource for the loads of laundry I do every week with a family of 5. However it has been nothing short of a nightmare. Our youngest children have allergies that we continue to battle and we believe the washing machine is the source of problems. It is not reasonable to expect a consumer product to be broken down and cleaned after each use to keep it safe from contamination. Even with an extended warranty it is not enough to keep the product safe.

    The consumer indicates that her washing machine emits a foul odor, more so when she has to drain the unit. Upon inspection, the consumer noticed that both the outside and the inside of its tubing contain mold.

    The consumer has contacted the Manufacturer several times and explained the situation; at first she was told not to use a lot of laundry detergent and that pods were not advised. The last time the consumer called she was informed that her unit was not recalled and thus they could not provide assistance free of charge.

    The consumer stated that a repairmen came out to do the recall repair in 2013 but the problem was not fixed.

    (6/22/2018) The consumer stated that his wife was washing his son’s full size sheet and a light blanket in the machine. During the spin cycle ( he’s not sure which spin cycle) the machine became unbalanced. It sounded like an explosion. The top of the machine came completely off and put a hole in the wall. The drum punched a hole in the back of the machine.

    The machine continued to spin. The consumer had to hit the power button to turn the unit off.

    (06/22/2018) The consumer contacted the Kenmore Recall center. He was advised that the issue would be turned over to Product Safety and he would be contacted in three business days.

    (06/27/2018) After not hearing from anyone, the consumer contacted Kenmore and was advised to wait for a call from the Repair Team.

    (07/02/2018) The consumer went to the Sears store in his area. He was given a number to call (department unknown). When he called the number he was advised that the product was not under warranty. The consumer was transferred to another department. He was advised that a repair technician would be out on July 17 to determine if the machine can be repaired or replaced.

    The consumer stated that he does not know what to do at this point.

    Kenmore Elite electric washer is defective. Ours is less than 6 months old purchased at Sears. Today, while mid-cycle washing a very small load of delicates, the top glass lid exploded. There was a loud “bang” sound when the lid shattering. On opening the lid, much of the shattered glass fell inside the washer.

Caller was able to put out the flames on the outside of the machine but there was still a fire inside of the machine. Contacted the fire department who came and put the fire out inside of the machine. Fire marshal informed caller that there was an electrical fire that started in the engine of the machine. No property damage.

She stated that the same incident occurred it awoke her in the middle of the night when she heard a loud pop and then the glass shattered inside the unit, The washer was not in use at the time the incident occurred,

    The consumer states that she was washing clothes in her washing machine when she heard an explosion. The consumer checked the unit and noticed that the noise came from the unit while it was in the spin cycle. The consumer notes that side of the washer bowed out, and the unit was leaking water. The consumer states that her washing machine is located on a second floor and that it has damaged the floor it stands on, also the drywall in the ceiling of the living area below laundry room.

    In January 2018, the washer started shaking during use. The problem during all wash cycles. The consumer tried changing the cycles while washing, but the problem was still present. It also happens with everything that is washed in the machine. The consumer said that the machine is located in her garage and when it is used, she can hear it in her bedroom and throughout her entire home.

    Some towels were damaged while in the washer. Additionally, the washer has moved out of place during use. A friend of hers put it back into place, but the same thing happened when it was used again.

    2/8/2018: (12:15pm) The consumer called the brand name company, Tel: [REDACTED], and told them about the problem. The rep. told her that they could not find any recalls in their system and as a result, they could not do anything for her. The rep. then gave the consumer the number to the CPSC Hotline and nothing else transpired..

The whole unit moved about a foot, spraying water everywhere and damaging the wall. I hate to think if my children had been in there when that happened. Kenmore is being unhelpful, saying they can’t do anything since I didn’t have an extended warranty. This is the sort of thing recalls are for. This is dangerous!

    The consumer filing to report that your washer is recalled with release# 13-073. She purchased the washer in November 2010 from Sears in Ashland, Wisconsin and had no problems with it before November 26, 2017 when she was washing clothes and all seemed fine until the rinse cycle which was the time that she went back to the laundry room and saw water going all over the place and the top of the washer lying upside down to the side of the washer. She believes that the incident had just happened because there was very little water on the floor. She turned the water off then unplugged it from an outlet that was approximately one foot away from the water. November 27, 2017 she first contacted the retailer who advised her that there was nothing they could do. She then contacted the manufacturer and she has no idea who she spoke with but they did schedule a repair tech for November 30, 2017 who informed the consumer that her washer was completely destroyed after coming apart during extreme shaking and not repairable. She contacted the CPSC and filed this incident report. The washer is recalled with release # 13-073 for this same safety hazard. There are no injuries being reported. The caller has tried to contact the manufacturer to ask when her washer can be replaced. She called them December 12th, 2017 and again today January 4, 2018. The manufacturer has provided other 800 numbers that go nowhere and they have returned none of her calls

    I’d like to call your attention to a product that 1 recently purchased which I believe has a dangerous design feature. In August 2017 I purchased a Kenmore 26132 top loader washing machine. After leveling machine, doing hook up, and following instructions I ran a couple of loads of clothes successfully. However at end of week I attempted to run another load and the machine froze up intermittently and sounded like the gears were coming apart.

    Immediately called Sears trouble shooter and after going thru their check off process was asked to hold phone up to machine so rep. could hear sound. Upon hearing noise, Sears advised to stop using & scheduled a Service Tech. call. Two technicians responded the following a.m. As soon as Tech pushed the power button, he quickly shut it off and without even pulling the machine out to check for problem advised us that he already knew what had happened. He proceeded to tell us the motor in this machine is very close to floor, that it had overheated and caught up in carpet underneath and burned the carpet. Sure enough as soon as he moved machine that was exactly what had happened. The plastic casing around motor had come off in dozens of hot pieces and were thrown all around carpet melting into the carpet wherever it touched. He also told us he had another call wherein the owner had a plastic drip pan beneath the washer (which was designed for that purpose) & that the motor had melted a hole thru the pan. The second Tech. further advised us that once water is added the weight from the water pushes the motor even lower making it dangerous to have on any type of flooring, carpet, tile, plastic, etc. I assume they would be ok on concrete. Nothing is mentioned in any literature about this issue.

    This machine is located in a small populated rural area so we knew if the technicians had already experienced this problem more than once that this was a serious matter. We advised Sears to that effect but got no reaction. We had the dealer check all his other machines. We did not want another model unless it was designed differently. The dealer advised that all current models no longer have a protective metal bottom panel on them and further that this model had the motor closest to the floor. We ended up with an LG which was a little higher than the Kenmore but even so the Tech. recommended that we raise all 4 legs to the maximum level before using. It certainly looks odd but we have done so.

    In filing a claim, the company’s position is that this is a manufacturing error and they will be sending our claim on to the manufacturer once they determine who made this model. I am enclosing two pics....one which shows the multiple white pieces of casing burnt into the carpet and with the imprint of the motor burnt into the carpet. The other picture has the washer laying down (the motor casing has already been removed by the tech) and shows just how close this entire mechanism is to the floor. I hope you can convince Sears a recall is in order. Luckily I was inside when the washer malfunctioned but this could have been much worse situation.

    Consumer Protection Agency Re: Report No.20171120 0692C 17 14049 addendem In response to your letter of Nov. 21, 2017 I have made a correction to copy. After my report, Whirlpool contacted me on Nov.9, 2017. My complaint had been transferred to them as Sears Rep. deemed the problem a manufacturing error. Their agent asserted the following: -We didn’t level washer. I advised him that was inaccurate. The washer was leveled at time of installation. The rep. then said that we must have tried to line it up to dryer?? I advised that we did not do that and doing so would defeat the necessity for leveling. No reason for his assertion was given. -He then asserted that the carpet pad must be “guishy”. I advised him that we had carpet in this property for 40 yrs or so and the pad is not “guishy”. Further that we have had numerous appliances and washers in this area without any incident over that time. None were off balance or rocked and the washer sat firmly where placed. -He also stated the washer was designed to shut down if the motor malfunctioned. Clearly this didn’t happen and I reminded him that the washer was shut down manually after Sears troubleshooter listened to the motor noise and advised us to do so. This is one of the design flaws in addition to the location of motor. --Lastly, he stated that instructions were to not place washer on carpet. I refuted that assertion as none of the installation or user documents contained that requirement. We still have our copy of those documents. In fact, a company rep. installed our previously replaced washer in this same location without incident or concern. The rep. indicated he would research the documents and call me again. To date that has not occurred. My overall impression was that Whirlpool was not concerned about correcting the design to eliminate the danger of this machine and was more interested in making this about something that we as consumers did wrong. He had no reason for any of the above assertions and none of them were true. Very frustrating.

    The submitter said she moved into the home (address below) a week ago and the washer was already in the home. The submitter believes the washer was purchased from Sears.

    When the submitter went to use the washer she noticed mold all around the rubber rim. She said she has cleaned the rubber rim but the mold and mildew will not come off. The submitter believes the washer poses a health risk and it should be recalled.

    The submitter called the firm today and informed them of her safety concerns. The submitter was told that her washer was not recalled and they have not heard about a mold problem with their washers.     Little over five(5) year old Kenmore Elite washing machine (796.29272001) started stopping mid-cycle with no lights on panel, only sound. Sears said it may be circuit board.

    Came home after being out and found that the washing machine caught fire while we were away. No one was home and machine was not running. No circuit breaker trip and plug worked fine so there must be some sort of internal issue. Found out the device had a recall that NO ONE from sears ever mentioned when we had them over for maintenance on the device. Now sears has miraculously lost all my records and giving me the run-around.

    The consumer went to put a load to washer and when she opened the drawer where the detergent goes, she noticed black mold. Upon removing the containers for the detergent, bleach and softener she noticed more mold. She indicated that the drawer is filled with black mold and the inside back panel is also filled with mold but she cannot reach inside to clean it. The consumer also noticed mold near the drain.

    The consumer believes the mold has been there for months and caused her and her family to experience rashes. The consumer states that she had a rash on her back and a blister on the right side became infected that she had to go to an urgent care for treatment. The consumer’s children have also experienced rashes. The consumer’s 14 and 13 year old daughters experienced swelling on their arms, legs, face and rashes over their body. The consumer’s son has experienced swelling and rashes on his body. He also had an infection in his genitals. The consumer indicated that her children have to carry a Benadryl pen with them because of their skin reactions.

    The consumer indicated that she cleans the filter once a month.

    The consumer indicated that she has changed the laundry detergent multiple times during the past few months but it didn’t work and she believes these symptoms are from the mold.

    She contacted the firm and asked for a repair technician to replace the parts but they said they could not repair the washer. They advised her to contact CPSC to request a recall.

    I have had this washing machine for 5 years. Frequently it gets extremely unbalanced and literally walks inself into the laundry room, banging into the wall and the dryer. The other day the bottom agitator had come completely loose and was askew in with the laundry like someone had thrown a hubcap in my load. I immediately did an internet search to see if this was a common problem and found out that there has been a recall for my model related to the washing machine becoming dangerously unbalanced. I followed the instructions and called the Kenmore/LG number at 888.812.2935. I told them that my washing machine was broken and that I thought it was related to the recall issue and they scheduled a repair.

    So the repairman just left. He advised that I needed to replace a spring suspension kit (4 springs), the agitator and wasteplate. I assumed this was the recall repair, but he said it wasn’t. I told him that I thought the reason why these needed replacement was due to excessive wear and tear on them because of the faulty design that has caused the machine to become dangerously unbalanced. I asked him what the recall repair was for the unbalancing and he could not tell me. The only thing he had in his computer was a computer upgrade.

    Agitator plate came off during a spin cycle - burning odor came from washer after extremely loud noise. Once the clothes were removed and the agitator plate was removed from the washer, we noticed what appears to be a moldy, degraded surface. We have also experienced some bad odors coming from the washer - a garbage smell from time to time when the washer is empty.

    I’ve called several different Sears / Kenmore phone numbers and they are unwilling to help with this issue because there has not been a recall and they don’t have “knowledge” of the issue.

    Kenmore washer purchased during November 2016 from the original owners who had owned it for two years in British Columbia.

    December 27th, 2016 the caller had placed a load of clothing in the washer which was located off of her kitchen then went to her kitchen approximately 20 feet away.

    During the rinse spin she heard a noise like a very loud thump then a metal clink which it turned out was the lid trying to come up then going back down due to it having the lid lock.

    She returned to her laundry room and she could see flames coming up onto the outside from under the washer and she could smell the odor of plastic burning.

    She pushed the off button on the washer, pushed everything out of the way, tripped the circuit breaker to off then called her son.

    The caller’s son is a fire fighter and had been there earlier so he did return immediately and with the washer off and disconnected from power the flames were still about 3” in diameter. He extinguished the flames then using the technician’s manual found tucked within the washer they decided that the capacitor had burned up. From the time the caller heard the sound she estimates that approximately 12 minutes had gone past. There are no injuries being reported She did contact the manufacturer who directed her to CPSC and to Repair Solution

    Update Sears Canada - Executive Office ([REDACTED]) - has been in touch with the caller; they are having their insurance people contact her re: damaged floor; + Executive Office offered 15% off the purchase of a new washing machine at Sears.

    I had purchased the Kenmore elite front loading washing machine model number: 796.42199900 from Sears in 2010. I also have a problem with mold and a bad odor from the machine. I had contacted both sears and Kenmore about this issue and they said since this item is not on recall, they cant assist me. However, I do want to highlight the problem is also persistent in this model and am wondering if there are more complaints about this model and what do I have to do to get them to correct the problem.

    9/28/2016 (4:30pm) The washer was started by the consumer’s wife and she left the home. There were 2 baby towels and baby clothes in the washer.

    The consumer came home and found that the washer turned around 180 degrees and was facing the wall. The electric cord was pinned against the corner. The outer shell of the front and rear of the washer was bent from the drum banging around inside during the wash cycle. The entire top portion of the washer was hanging on the side and being held by wires from the control panel.

    The clothes dryer was also damaged from the washer banging against it. One could see the path that the washer took as it moved around. There was no damage to the walls or floors. There were no injuries & no one was home at the time.

    NOTE: The consumer’s washer was repaired under CPSC Recall# 13-073, in April of 2016, but he was told that it was NOT included in the recall.

    7/2015: The consumer noticed that his washer shook during use and it would move approximately 1’ to 2’ from the original location. The consumer initially contacted Sears about Recall 13-073, but he was told that he did not have the correct model, because he was not providing enough numbers. The consumer double checked his numbers and saw the numbers 2972, but there were 3 very small numbers prior to it, which were 796, which he relayed to Sears. The consumer was told his washer was not recalled.

    4/2016: The washer continued to move and the consumer looked at the CPSC recall further. He identified that his serial number matched the range listed in CPSC’S recall. The consumer contacted Sears again and was told that his washer was not included in the recall. The consumer then contacted the CPSC and his information was taken. Approximately a day or 2 later, Sears contacted the consumer and sent the recall-repair parts to his home. A tech was came out within approx. 3 days, but he did not do the repair. The tech. told the consumer that based on the numbers on his washer, it was not recalled and he took the parts that were mailed to the consumer back with him.

    The consumer followed up with the CPSC, who in turn contacted the firm again. A technician came out and inspected the washer. The tech. found problems with the washer’s struts and the barrel. The tech. checked the consumer’s model/serial numbers and indicated that the washer was not included in the recall. The consumer showed the tech. a printout of Recall # 13-073 with identified model/serial numbers and the tech. agreed to do the repair under the recall. The tech. ordered the parts and they were sent to the consumer’s home overnight. Once the parts arrived, the consumer contacted the tech. and he came back out and made the repairs.

    The washer appeared to work as it should until this most recent incident.

    Although LG manufactured the washer, Sears handles the matters that arise with their brand of washers.

    (09/19/2016) The consumer stated that had put a load of clothes in she washer. About three hours later, the consumer she walked out in the garage (where the product is located) and saw that the washer was turned around backwards. The top of the washer was on the ground. Metal and plastic parts and pieces were strewn all over the garage. Also, the drum of the washer had broken loose on two corners of the interior of the washer.

    (09/19/2016) The consumer called LG and was re-directed to Sears. The consumer was advised that she could not be helped because she did not have a warranty and the product was not included in a recall. The consumer was also advised that they did not have a recall but did have a safety flash.

    (6/5/16) The consumer used the washer and noticed that her clothes were soaked after the cycle was finished. The consumer states that the water is not being drained during the spin cycle. The consumer indicated that the first time she used the washer she noticed it made a noise during the wash cycle and it shakes excessively. The consumer states that it has become worse and now the washer is not draining the water.

    The consumer indicated that the washer was already in the home when she moved in about a year and a half ago.

    (6/6/16) The consumer contacted Sears and informed them about the issue. The consumer was advised that her washer was not recalled and they could send a technician to inspect her washer. The consumer states the technician arrived later in the evening. The technician advised the consumer it would cost between $400-$500 to repair the washer.

    While searching online the consumer came across recall # 13-073 and noticed that her washer was having a similar issue as the recalled washers. The consumer believes her washer should be recalled.

    We purchased Kenmore Elite Top-Loading Automatic Washer in May 2010 or 2011. Received recall notice from Sears in January 2013 and had machine serviced around the same time for severe shaking due to load imbalances. The repair only temporarily fixed the machine. Even though we do not wash water-proof or water-resistant items, the machine gets out of balance very easily. It then wastes water by continually draining and refilling in an attempt to balance the load. We have had enough of having to “babysit” the machine to ensure it doesn’t get severely out of balance and/or continually fill with water, so we are going to have to buy a new machine, even though this one is only 5-6 years old.     This incident has been ongoing for approximately 9 months. There has been no property damages because she was able to cancel the operation when this happens.

    She stated that she had a repair technician APSCO looked at the washer, she was advised that the switch might have been defective. He also lifted the washer and noticed that the porcelain on the bottom of the unit was cracked and she was informed that it might cost her more to repair it than replacing it.

    The consumer started having allergies due to her clothing but she was unaware why as she had not been doing anything differently to her clothing.

    12/15/2014 (Approximately) - The consumer indicates that she noticed the washing machine had accumulated mold in the plastic ring that seals the unit. Over time, the mold continued to accumulate even after the consumer cleaned the unit with bleach, as suggested on the booklet.

    05/10/2015 - The consumer went to the Doctor since she was having severe allergic reactions from her clothing. They performed an allergy test, which came back positive for many things including mold. After explaining the issue she was having with her washing machine, the Doctor advised the consumer to hand-wash her clothes instead.

    The consumer continued to wash the washing machine with bleach in order to try and get rid of the mold but it did not seem to help much. The consumer states that she stopped using the unit to wash her clothes as soon as her Doctor advised it. She washes every piece of her clothing, including towels, by hand. The consumer continues to wash her rest of the family’s clothing in the washing machine as they are not severely affected by the presence of mold in the unit.

    02/09/2016 - Tired from the continued need of washing the washing machine, the consumer contacted the retailer and explained the situation. They gave her the runaround until a representative informed her that because her unit was neither part of a recall nor it had an extended warranty, they could not provide any assistance.

    The consumer plans on purchasing a new washing machine.

    (12/07/2015) The consumer stated that the washer was in the rinse/spin cycle. He heard a noise coming from the product. He went to see what the noise was but the noise had stopped. There was four minutes left on the cycle. The consumer looked through the glass and didn’t see any problems with the operations, There were no cracks on the glass. When the cycle was finished, he heard the alarm go off.

    The consumer started to get the clothes out of the washer. The consumer stated that he had noticed before that the door was a little tighter. He opened the door and started pulling the clothes out. He heard a pop. I felt something hit the calf and shin of his left leg. He turned to look down at his leg and saw two little spots on his leg. The spots were bleeding but the consumer did not see any shards in his leg. The glass from the door started falling to the floor. When the glass hit the floor, the glass broke in large and small pieces.

    The consumer stated that the glass is not safety glass because it did not shatter. The glass is about a 1/2 inch thick.

    No medical of attention was required.

    (12/8/2015) The consumer contacted Kenmore to advised them of what happened. He was advised that there was no warranty and he was not covered and the product was not recalled. No report was taken.

    The consumer was advised to contact CPSC.

    I have a Kenmore Model 417.42042100, serial XC20413617 front load washer and it has constant problems with black mold in the front, I leave the door open, clean it regularly, it stinks like mold. We are constantly getting sick, straggling with constant allergies and I have the symptoms of mold toxicity. My daughter is starting to break out in hives. Please help. This product needs to be recalled immediately. It is making people sick. Help please.

    Own a Kenmore Elite Oasis HE Canyon Capacity QuietPak9 washing machine. Displays error code UL on every wash cycle and violently shakes banging against our [REDACTED] dryer. Knocks down shelves and had to stop using. Religiously cleaned and flushed out lines annually in this machine as has been exceptionally and meticulously cared for. Own all top of the line appliances in our home to ensure the highest quality for our family. Highly upset that this is the first time ever an appliance threatens our safety. As stated due to the ridiculous violent shaking of the unit we refuse to use it for fear of our safety. My prior washing machine was a Kenmore that was about 22 yrs old and we donated it to a neighbor and now regret buying a Kenmore HE. Found thousands of consumers reporting online with this machine, [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] lines having the same issue. I’m appalled that these products with serious risk to injury have been sold and have caused injury and numerous lawsuits. No longer a Sears and Kenmore customer.

    washing a small load of clothes when I heard a loud noise. I went and found my Kenmore Elite washers drum had broken loose and hit my freezer. All four brackets that hold the drum in place had broken loose. From the force of the hit it dented my washer in two places and the top of the washer (control panel and door) came off the rest of the unit.

    today, while doing a normal load of laundry, bedding/sheets, our Kenmore Elite Top Load washing machine completely blew up, into pieces, damaging the walls, the adjoining Kenmore Dryer and getting water all over the floor. Parts were blown down the hallway, and the damage was so extensive to the machine that it is distorted, bent, and completely destroyed.

    My Kenmore Elite washing machine exploded. During the spin cycle, there was a catastrophic failure of the attachment between the top and the base. The top flew off (staying connected only by a few hoses) and the entire machine continued to spin around, banging into and damaging the wall and the dryer.

    Front loading Kenmore washer develops mold and associated bad odor (which is sometimes imparted to clothes) despite rigorous cleaning regimen for washer. Cleaning regimen includes removal of soap dispenser tray & cleaning & drying, as well as wiping and drying door gasket and leaving door open after each use; weekly draining & cleanings of lower drain & trap, and monthly use of a washer cleaner powder (Tide). Despite this, we have discovered trapped fibers, soap scum, and encrusted black mold on the underside of the door gasket, a location that is extraordinarily hard to get to.

    House owner complained about mold smell in new washer. On 11/16/2013 I opened washer - mold smell overwhelming- I jumped back - throat got scratchy - eyes watered - had a hard time breathing ( I have asthma) and got a headache - got a bad sinus infection - used over the counter medication. Finally went to doctor on 12/03/2013. See attached letter from doctor. Technicians said replacing tub a temp fix - no valve in machine to stop water from returning to washer when pump stops. This causes mold. Am enclosing 2 complaints to Attorney General - copy of washer fan to place in washer to get ride of mold - copy of affects of mold. 4 Pictures of mold in our washer!

    The consumer stated that the electronics on the unit control all of the cycles. The consumer stated that the electronics are malfunctioning and allowing the lid to open during spin cycle.

    The consumer stated that the lid becomes unlocked during spin cycle and sometimes during other cycles as well.

    The consumer stated that the lid is able to open up while the drum is spinning extremely fast.

    The consumer contacted the manf and they sent out a technician for inspection. The technician explained to the consumer that the transmission and the electronic controls in the machine are starting to fail. The consumer was informed that this is a safety hazard.

    The consumer wanted the manf to either replace the unit or pay for the repair cost. The manf stated that because the unit is not under warranty they will not cover repair cost or provide replacement.

    The consumer was provided repair cost estimate of $443.

    On April 22, 2012 I purchased a Kenmore brand high efficiency washing machine model number 28002. The purchase was made at Sears store number 01578 located in the Pearlridge shopping mall at Aiea, Hawaii.

    On July 11 2014 the product suffered a defect resulting in a fire causing the total loss of the washing machine. The fire department was dispatched to extinguish the fire and fortunately there was no loss of life incurred. My wife was home at the time and was the person operating the machine in accordance with the instruction manual. During the wash cycle she heard a loud bang sound followed by smoke emitting from the machine. A fire soon ensued. She was able to escape the house and wait for the arrival of the fire department.

    My husband was home alone on the second floor of our house when he heard a loud crash of glass breaking. Once he determined that both of our pets were in the room with him, he went into the basement and found the glass door of our front loading washer had spontaneously broke, leaving large shards of glass all over the floor. The washer was not in use at the time or for at least 24 hours before it broke and there was no sign of anything that could have made contact or broke the door.
