The product, in the report: Scepter 5 gallon plastic gas can.
Scepter 5 gallon plastic gas cans used to transport fuel for our boat.. Both cans expanded on all sides while being stored in a shed. After filling the cans both handles seemed to be leaking gas. The car smelled and my hands smelled after taking them out of the car. No injuries, the expanded sides were pretty scary to see.

First aid Made Jun 25, 2024, sent to the company Jun 28, 2024, published by CPSC Jul 15, 2024
The product, in the report: Five Gallon gas can, Sold at all Big Box Stores
I purchased a 5 gal gas can at Home Depot. The can has a safety valve that shuts off. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to use. It also has an extension on the spout that is supposed to help support the can on the rim of the mower opening, which is too small to support anything. Also, the can itself is too thin. I was attempting to refuel my lawn tractor and was trying to hold the can, (no handle to support the bottom of the can) and hold the lever down, at the same time. In the process the can slipped off the rim. This resulted in me smashing my fingers and dropping the can, which resulted in the can rupturing and splashing gas all over me , the mower, and the garage. I wound up with damage tttttto my fingers and chemical burns from the gas.

The product, in the report: Scepter 08669 Rectangular 12 Gallon Low Profile Marine Fuel Tank For Outboard Engine Boats, 24.5-Inches x 18-Inches x 11.5-Inches, Red
I have 2 different Scepter marine gas cans. One is a 6 gallon and the other is 12 gallons. The safety caps on these cans do not self release pressure that may build up inside the tank. I have made several attempts to remedy this with the manufacturer but they have stopped communicating with me to resolve the issue of the tanks swelling and not releasing excessive pressure. The 12 gallon tank will leak fuel from around the connector and gauge spilling gas onto the deck of my boat. Ive sent scepter emails with photos but they do not respond any longer. They did replace the cap once and assured me that it would resolve the problem but the replacement is still not working properly and releasing pressure. The tanks still just swells as if it will explode at any time. Most of the time I have to keep the cap just about completely off to prevent swelling of the gas tank.

The product, in the report: Scepter products 5 gallon gas can with federally required child-safe self closing spout.
In climates with cold nights and warms day cause these new safety gas cans to condense gas in the spout. When you have the safety cap on the end of the spout gas collect, when you take the cap off you wear the gas which has collected there. This gas collects there due to the fumes have no place to vent, your can be either a balloon or the opposite ready to take in air to re-inflate. You should be able to guess when it is expanded it shoots the collected gas out all over everything including the operator.

No incident, no one hurt Made Apr 25, 2022, sent to the company Apr 28, 2022, published by CPSC May 12, 2022
The product, in the report: Scepter brand 5 gallon plastic gasoline container
This is about a 5 gallon gas can. I noticed that every time the weather warmed up my garage would fill with gasoline fumes. Upon checking, I found wet gasoline on the outside of the container and on the surface on which it sat. Fortunately, no fire occurred. The design includes a breather tube that extends from the cap into the can. Even with the level of gasoline in the can below the full mark, the breather tube is below the fluid level. When the temperature warms, the expansion of the gasoline and air in the can forces the liquid up the breather tube to the cap and nozzle area where it leaks out due to pressure in the can. In the picture you can see the wet gasoline on the outside of the can as a shiny area below the filler cap. Tightening the cap does not prevent the leak. Also, the can is very poorly designed for handling while transferring fuel from the can. One hand is required to lift the can. One hand is required to hold open the mechanism to pour gasoline. But since the handle for lifting does not extend around the side of the can to be able to tilt the can for pouring, ANOTHER hand is needed to tilt the can somehow. Most humans have only two hands, making the job of lifting, tilting and opening the can all at the same time very awkward, if not impossible. This product is clearly poorly designed and dangerous.

The product, in the report: Scepter Smart Control EPA#JSMFPPFCSFR1
I bought a Scepter 2 gallon smartcontrol gas can. It leaks at the spout and Scepter refuses to replace it under warranty. It is a fire hazard with all of the gas that leaks out and leaves my garage smelling like gas. Furthermore you cannot pour the can without getting gas on the engine which could cause the engine to catch fire.

The product, in the report: Scepter smart control gas can. 2.5 gal. Bought at Walmart. Came out new this year (2019). Its red, with a black nozzle and a big square green release button on the nozzle
Scepter smart control gasoline can
I was trying to fill my push mower with gasoline. The push button to open the valve is always stiff and hard to push, but this time when it finally opened, gasoline shot out of it straight up into my face and eyes.
After running inside to flush water in my eyes to stop the burning, I went back out to see what had happened and noticed the can looked a little bloated. Like there was still pressure.
Since the weather warned up here, I guess pressure built up in the can since its sealed tight. So when I opened the valve with it tipped up to pour into the tank, all of that pressure was suddenly released. I’m still not entirely sure how it shot straight up unti my face.
I decided to take a small nail and puncture a hole in the top/back of the can like old gas cans used to have and the moment I did, you could hear the air whooshing out from the pressure still built up.
The same thing happened to my mom, though thankfully the pressure hadnt built up enough yet to shoot it in her face.

No one hurt Made Feb 18, 2017, sent to the company Mar 23, 2017, published by CPSC Apr 6, 2017
The product, in the report: Gas can, 5 gallon
Instead of the classic spout and vent, the Scepter Eco gas can employs a single opening, with the vent incorporated into the spout. This vent is opened by rotating a collar.
However, the collar:
1. Is difficult to open
2. Does not stay open (Snaps shut on the slightest disturbance. It took me 15 minutes to discharge 3 gallons of gasoline into a generator, partially due to poor flow rate and having to repeatedly reset the collar).
3. The vent becomes ineffective when the spout is submerged.
Because the container fails to operate as claimed, I had to pour the gasoline from the can’s opening into another can. This defeats both the safety and environmental features claimed by the manufacturer.

Emergency room Made Jun 22, 2015, sent to the company Jun 30, 2015, published by CPSC Jul 15, 2015
The product, in the report: 2.5 gallon plastic gas can with spill proof system. environmentally friendly
I have always had concern about the design of the spout on this gas can. Nearly every time I use it I end up with a mess of gas on either the lawn mower or my hands, and based on the reviews I now see on Amazon for this product I am not alone. It is difficult to use and error prone, which is disturbing considering it is meant to store and use a dangerous chemical like gasoline.
This can appears to be designed for environmental purposes, so that vapors cannot escape. As such the can is airtight, and seems to have no method of venting other than manually pressing in the spout to open it. Because of this airtight nature temperature changes can cause a great deal of pressure build up in the can. I normally vent the can outside in a safe direction, but even so it seems dangerous when sometimes gas can spray out of the can due to the extreme pressure. On 6/13/15 I did not take this step, and attempted to fill my lawn mower tank using the way provided in the instructions, which is to unlock the spout, set the catch on the lip of the gas fill hole of the mower, and press down. Because of the pressure the gas came out extremely quickly, instantly overflowing the tank and getting all over the mower. I set the can back in my garage next to the wall, and proceeded to clean up the mower. After getting it clean I thought I should release any little bit of remaining pressure in the can by pulling down on the spout to open it up. I assumed most of the pressure had been released in the first incident. Unfortunately there was still a lot of pressure in the can, as well as a piece of curved plastic next to my garage wall. The spray of gasoline from the can hit the plastic and was redirected back into my face. After washing and flushing my eyes, face, and basically entire head for about 20 minutes I headed to the ER. They found a 2mm chemical burn in my left eye and two separate 2mm burns in my right eye, and proceeded to further flushed my eyes using saline.
I believe this can should be recalled. It is unthinkable that such a dangerous and difficult to use product is on the market, not just for me but scores of other people. I have been using gas cans to fill lawn mowers for over 30 years and have never had any experience like this. In the best case a person will occasionally get gas on their hands while using this product, which is bad enough. People in the area of the can are obviously in danger of being sprayed under certain circumstances. I even have concerns about the can bursting due to the pressure, as I have at times seen it swell considerably on hot days.

No one hurt Made Jan 28, 2015, sent to the company Feb 5, 2015, published by CPSC Feb 23, 2015
The product, in the report: 10 L plastic fuel container Scepter,10L/2.5 GAL.
“Safety” gas can usually leaks. Tricky nozzle, obviously intended to be safer and avoid spills, does just the opposite. I did manage to use it once recently without spilling, but that’s rare. Seems to leak around green collar. Also, probably needs some kind of vent, because it collapses in when the weather gets cold. I’ve seen a number of different gas cans with this problem. The one I own is a “Scepter” 10 liter can, but it’s probably down to 7 or 8 now. The numbers at the bottom of the bar code on the label are: 63923 07534 On the left side of the label, running vertically, we have: P#07378 and L# 08791
So far, the worst thing that’s happened to me is getting gas on my hands. But I’m sure someone somewhere has been severely burned. That’s what happens when you get a couple of ounces of gas running around loose!
Again, it’s not the particular product. I think the design itself is flawed, and I’ve seen similar designs that also spilled gas on me on other products.
The old style cans were safer and less polluting, though I wouldn’t call them safe or non-polluting!
BTW, your register and signing in page is user resistant. Watch a couple of people who haven’t used it before and are not some kind of programmer, and you’ll see what I mean.

The product, in the report: Sceptor 18.8 L/5 gal Gas Can
On June 6, 2014 we purchased 4 Sceptor Gas Cans and a portable generator for which these gas cans were to be used for. We only filled 2 bause the spout to dispese fuel was very different from the straight pour gas cans. The spout has to be 1) released 2) held open with great difficulty while trying to dispense gas. Secondly the handle, it only has one, is situated on the top of the can originating at the spout and about 10” long. For a car, which fills on the side, this might work. But in order to fill any lawn equipment (tractor, mower, generator) which are top filled this is problematic and in our case, lead to a spill of fuel and damage to the generator. It would take a person of very developed forearms and a third hand to use this can. It is a 2 person job to use this can. The elderly or average weekend lawn warrior is very likely to have an accident with this product.

The product, in the report: fuel can with new type of spout.
New type of fuel can with so called safety spout. When this can sits in the sun awhile it build pressure inside of it. Then when you go to fuel your lawn mower it sprays gasoline everywhere. The entire mower was covered in gasoline. Thankfully the mower had not been used yet when this happened. If the mower had been just running when this happened I could seen where the gasoline would ignite and could cause serious injury or death

The product, in the report: 2.5 gallon red gasoline can with flow control spout. The manufacturer calls this a spill proof, child safe, environmentally friendly gasoline can.
The 1 to 2.5 gallon gasoline cans I’ve purchase in the last year have all had really bad pour spouts. Since I have had these cans I have rarely avoided a spill when I’ve poured gasoline into my lawn equipment and snow blower. Knowing this I take extra care to avoid a spill, but it is nearly impossible. I’ve tried a couple different cans with different pour spouts, but they all have the same spill problem. The design seems to be extremely defective. I’m certain the design changes are intended to reduce the escape of fumes, but, in my case they have certainly increased the likelihood of a spill. Last week when my snow blower was running low on fuel I shut it down and allowed it to cool for several minutes. Then I attempted to fill the gasoline tank using one of my cans with the new spout. I was careful, but one again as the release valve was engaged the gasoline rushed out of the can and overflowed the blower tank and spilled onto the top of the engine. The gasoline sizzled and scared the hell out of me! I stopped filling and cleaned up the mess. Then I took the spout off the can and used my syphon to fill that tank. That’s not the safest thing to do either. Can you take a look at these new gasoline pour spouts and demand a better design. The old one that do not have a pour control mechanism were certainly better and safer! I have not contacted the manufacturer because I am certain they are in compliance with EPA regulations (EPA # ASCP2P2AABS1), which, in my opinion is a pretty poor regulation Thank you.

The product, in the report: Scepter 5 gallon gasoline can. Square, red, has a black nozzle extending from the top hole of the can. This is a common 5 gallon yard can to hold gasoline for lawnmowers and snowblowers.
I purchased 2 of the Scepter 5 gallon gasoline cans from Target. These are standard red gasoline cans that store gas to power devices such as lawnmowers and snowblowers. When used as instructed, as I rotate the green locking mechanism and push up against the nozzle to release the valve to allow gas to flow, gas flows out of the green locking mechanism, all over my hands and on the floor. Both of my cans exhibit this problem. I believe this is a fire hazard, and there are health risks with getting gasoline all over my hands. I have tried tightening the nozzle against the can, but both still malfunction in this manner. I am planning on returning this to the vendor (Target) to get a refund, as I believe any replacement can I get will exhibit the same problem.

The product, in the report: Scepter 18.8L/5Gal Eco plastic gas can
Scepter 18.8L/5Gal Eco plastic gas can. UPC=063923975435
The gas cans were use to fill a boat and lawn mower fuel tank. The four gas cans were purchased from the Jupiter, Florida Walmart on Indiantown Road approximately two months ago. Each gas can was used approximately six times.
After a few uses of transferring fuel from the gas can to the boat and lawn mower, a hazardous situation was created when fuel leaked from between the gas can and spout. Some of the fuel ran down the outside of the spout into the tanks, while the majority puddled on the boat deck or ground. The first issue observed was that the pressure required to activate (hold open) the self closing green swivel located at the lower portion of the spout combined with the location of the two tabs used to apply the pressure to the spout caused the spout to flex at the joint between the gas can and the spout. This flexing resulted in the o-ring/gasket attached to the spout assemble to become dislodged. Once dislodged, the fuel leaked from between the gas can and spout. On several occasions, the spout assembly was removed the from the gas can and the o-ring/gasket re-positioned to its proper location. After additional uses, three of the four o-rings/gaskets developed a tear. This further increased the amount of fuel leaking from between the gas can and spout assembly.
The second issue is related to the green self closing swivel. The issue seems to be caused when partial pressure is removed. This allow the swivel to move to a position between open and locked closed. Once pressure is reapplied to activate (hold open) the spout, the green swivel dislodges and becomes stuck in the full open or locked position. Of the four spout assemblies, two are locked in the open position making transportation in a vehicle hazardous. As noted the gas cans were used approximately six times. Of the four spout assemblies, there remains only one semi-functioning unit. This spout assembly has the one remaining o-ring/gasket that has not developed a tear. Unfortunately, the green self closing swivel is stuck in the open position.

The product, in the report: Scepter 5.3 gallon eco Jerry can plastic gas can
I am reporting about “Scepter ECO child resistant Jerry can” plastic 5.3 gallon gas can. I have had three of these and they work for about 1 -2 years and then the seals go bad and they leak gas everywhere when it is use. The also jam open and the design is such that gas sprays like a sprinkler head if it is not closed before the nozzle in put in a gas tank. It is safer to remove the spout completely and use a funnel. This product is still for sale and should be removed from stores.
I saw it for sale on amazon and the reviews report the same problems I have.

The product, in the report: 5L/1.25gal Specter (“eco” model) “Environmentally Friendly” gasoline container
I own a 5L/1.25gal Specter gas container (“eco” model) puchased at Home Depot earlier this year. The container has a safety nozzle that requires the user to twist a sleeve on the nozzle to unlock. Then, while the nozzle is inserted into the gas tank filler neck, the user must press the nozzle against the filler neck to release the flow of fuel. When filling my weedeater fuel tank (about 3/4 empty) the tank suddenly overfilled, forcing the fuel (gas/oil mixture) to jet out of the tank and onto my chin, clothes, shoes (I was squatting while refueling). I used a garden hose to dilute the fuel I was wearing and discarded the clothes. This overflow problem has happened before (in fact, every time I’ve used this Specter container) but not to the extent of my fuel drenching on Saturday. The design of the nozzle leaves little control over the rate of fuel being transferred from the container into the gas tank of the lawn tool as the user is literally forcing the nozzle into the gas tank filler neck in order to release the “safety” mechanism and fill the tank.
