The product, in the report: Briggs & Stratton Pressn Pour 2+ gallon safer can. CARB G-22-197A, EPA LTP2PPFCSGB2-001
Briggs and Stratton Press’n Pour gas can, model number GB320SL. This product has design failure where fuel unexpectedly dumps out of multiple outlets simultaneously from the container. This caused un-necessary risk to safety and health. Furthermore I would like to add that after evaluating this product, it is possible that the entire product line of Pressn Pour is possibly effected due to the design flaw I have observed.

No incident, no one hurt Made Dec 4, 2025, sent to the company Dec 9, 2025, published by CPSC Dec 23, 2025
The product, in the report: 5 gallon Gasoline can with “Press’n Pour” Spout. Marketed by Briggs and Stratton.
Learned the hard way that the “Press’n Pour” marketed by Briggs and Stratton and produced by “Garage Boss” (www.garageboss.com), according to the label, is not designed to pour the last 1/4 of liquid from a Briggs & Stratton marketed can.
The Gasoline container’s dispenser leaks from the pushbutton when dispensing the last 1/4 of the material. The gas flashed on the snowblower I was filling after I walked away when it started leaking and smelled it before I saw it (gloves on). I got the cap on, but it flashed and did not start a fire. The Snowblower is in good working condition with all covers and safeties on. If I had not noticed the leak (gloves on. but smelled stronger than normal) I would have been standing directly over it. So, what do we do? I can’t believe this thing hasn’t cost you guys your company.
For clarity, it did this at an angle no different than the fine photos on the Briggs and Stratton website instructions. Double checked just in case it wasn’t actually designed to empty the can all the way.
You can call me at [REDACTED], but I would prefer an email reply.

The product, in the report: Briggs and Stratton’s GarageBOSS Press ‘N Pour Gas Can, 2 gallon model. (sold as item #1051376, Model #GB320 at Lowes.com), red plastic.
My ‘safety’ gas can does not work properly anymore. The pushbutton to allow the fuel to flow has become sticky and does not release. While the mechanism to stop the initial overflow of fuel functions, when you release the button it does not return properly. This leaves the user to bang on the nozzle, or try to pry the button up. Worse, if they don’t realize this, they lift the gas can out of the tank and then it free-flows and spills fuel everywhere. I’m a mechanical engineer and understand how this is supposed to function, and it used to work better. Now that it’s about 2 years old it does not work properly and needs to be addressed. This is a GarageBOSS Press ‘N Pour Gas Can by Briggs and Stratton.

The product, in the report: Red, 2 Gallon plastic gas can and spout.
Gas can spout leaks badly at pushbutton. Briggs & Stratton Gas can Model GB020. I was refueling a snowblower. The spout pushbutton is hard to operate and when I did get it pushed down and started to pour, gas leaked out of the push button and all over my hand. I promptly washed the gas off and there were no injuries.

The product, in the report: Brigg & Straiton Gasoline Fuel Can, Smart-Fill 1 gallon
I have a new gasoline can that holds one gallon of gas. The spout is spring loaded to open and close the gas flow. Upon recent use of the gas can the spout was ejected from the gas can and gas made contact with my eyes from the spout projectile. Upon draining the gas can into an appropriate container I noticed a plastic disc in the bottle of the gas can.

The product, in the report: BRIGGS AND STRATTON SMART FILL GAS CAN, 2+GALLONS
while filling gas tank on lawn mower, nozzle came apart when I lifted the gas can from the gas tank, the spring inside the nozzle propelled the pieces of the nozzle apart, and gasoline began leaking all over the ground, lawn mower, and on my shoes... There was a mechanical failure inside the nozzle where the nozzle has a yoke that hooks onto the shut off flapper valve. The plastic yoke had spread apart from the flapper valve pivot point, and when I lifted the can free of the mower gas tank, the strong spring launched all the interior parts of the nozzle onto the ground.

The product, in the report: 2 Gallon Smart-Fill gas Can
About 2 years ago I purchased a Briggs & Stratton 2 Gallon Smart-Fill gas can from Home Depot. This was a replacement for the gas can that was 15 years old. The Smart-Fill spout safety mechanism tends to stick and will leak fuel on to the lawn mower. After following instructions and watching the provided videos on the proper use the product the gas can is scary to use. When dispensing fuel you have to apply so much pressure that the lawn mower will roll away unless you block a wheel. It tends to put the user in an unbalanced position when dispensing and many times the spout will not shut off after filling the tank. I contacted Briggs &Stratton after purchase and all they would say was that the can was in compliance. I have been cutting and mowing my own lawns for 50 years and these new gas cans are dangerous.

The product, in the report: Briggs & Stratton gas can
The Briggs & Stratton gas can spilled gas while properly sealed all over me, my clothes, and my motorcycle and motorcycle’s dash, the can did not operate at all, it would not pour at all, this has happened with all three Briggs & Stratton cans I have purchased. I have reviewed many reports of these cans being dangerous, dysfunctional, and broken online, most strongly on Amazon, I believe these products should be pulled from the market.

No one hurt Made Oct 20, 2016, sent to the company Dec 2, 2016, published by CPSC Dec 16, 2016
The product, in the report: Two Gallon Gas Can
This caller is 72 years old and that she recently purchased a two gallon gas can to use with her lawn mowers.
She states that she tried to follow the directions to pour the gasoline in her lawnmower October 19, 2016 and was unable to use the gasoline can and feel safe doing so. Line up two arrows on funnel, there is a hook type end to catch onto what you are pouring the gasoline into, you must push hard onto what you are pouring the gasoline into so that a portion of the funnel will push back into the funnel to release the gasoline. This has to be done while holding the can with the gasoline. She had to obtain assistance from her grandson.
She is reporting this because during this process if the end that catches hold of the lawn mower or other receptacle moves it would throw the user off balance and they could fall and injure themselves or if the gasoline spilled the outcome could become hazardously unsafe.
There are no injuries being reported
The caller has not contacted the manufacturer and does not know whether she will contact them.

The product, in the report: Briggs & Stratton 85060 6-Gallon Auto Shut Off Gas Can
The Briggs & Stratton 85060 6-Gallon Auto Shut Off Gas Can needs to be recalled. The product is unsafe for the following reasons. The product violates the law in which it leaks gasoline when pouring fuel from the spout. It has a poor product design which allows for this design flaw. Additionally, it poses a safety issue when fuel is being leaked when attempting to refuel.

No one hurt Made Jun 1, 2016, sent to the company Jun 27, 2016, published by CPSC Jul 19, 2016
The product, in the report: 2.5 gallon plastic gas can
The new gasoline storage cans for home-owner use now have check valves to prevent the gasoline from pouring out until the spout is pressed inward on the gas tank (such as on a lawn mower). This new safety feature is supposed to prevent the accidental spilling of the gasoline. However, it actually creates a greater safety hazard. If the gasoline storage container gets warm, and you then depress the spout while filling your lawnmower, the pressure in the gas can causes the gasoline to blow out all over the lawnmower. If the lawnmower is hot, there is a fire and explosion hazard. These new gas cans need a vent to release the pressure before you tip over the container and press in the nozzle.
The consumer is reporting all gas cans that have this new “safety” feature. The consumer states the heat creates the pressure and an incident is more likely to occur during the summer than during the colder seasons.
The consumer has created a vent hole to prevent another incident with his gas can.

The product, in the report: Briggs and Stratton smart fill gas can
When trying to use the 1 gallon can to fill up a push mower, gas splashed all over me. While having the nozzle in place I struggled to disengage the ‘smart/safety’ mechanism. Once I finally disengaged this and gas dumped into the gas tank of the mower it spewed strait back out like a fountain. It came out with such force that its initial contact was under my chin and then sprayed in all directions from there soaking me in gasoline. I was fortunate not to get gasoline in my eye. I did get it on my chin, neck, chest, arms, hands, and legs. As I write this. I’m sitting, covered in coconut oil after washing with dishwashing detergent (a degreaser) for 20 minutes. My skin is irritated and itchy. Yes, I did read the directions and yes I was wearing a shirt. This is the worst product I believe I’ve ever used. Ive had difficulty before trying to use this can. I will be replacing it. Not worth getting injured over. Of course I’ve not seen many of the other types of cans around and from the same canned response Briggs and Stratton uses on all their responses it may be that our geniuses in Washington have created this idiocy in the name of ‘safety’, thanks for nothing EPA and [REDACTED]!

The product, in the report: Gasoline can
This is additional information regarding incident report #20150419-8B303-2147433615.
Subsequent to filing the report, I went to use one of the gasoline cans and, as I pulled the spout from the can, the spout stopper came loose and fell inside the can. I am unable to remove the stopper unless I dump all of the gasoline. Obviously, the stopper is useless for the next month or so while I’m using up the gasoline in the can.

The product, in the report: See photos/ Briggs & Stratton Smart Fill Fuel Filling System 2 Gallon CARB G-10-010 manufactured by the Plastics Group
I just purchased a Briggs & Stratton Smart Fill Fuel Filling System 2 Gallon CARB G-10-010 manufactured by the Plastics Group (www.theplatsicsgroup.net) at a local Walmart (Fairfax, VA) and discovered a defect that appears to be common among all of that model and the other models that use the same nozzle system.
The container is sold with the nozzle mechanism inserted inside leaving it to the purchaser to remove the mechanism and install it for use. Unfortunately the mechanism is inserted in a such a way that upon removing it the mechanism cap – that is the nozzle cap – does not fit through the container opening. The nozzle assembly can be removed but the nozzle cap remains inside the container. As that nozzle cap is slightly larger than the container opening, upon positioning the container for pouring fuel that cap lodges itself in the opening, closing it and preventing the fuel from being poured. This is in turn can lead to dangerous situations in which fuel is spilled in the process of trying to dislodge the cap.
I urge you to take action in order to correct this defect and recall the affected products.

The product, in the report: 2 gallon red polyethylene (?) gas “can”
When using the childproof safety containers for gas we have had more spills (due to awkward handling when pouring into mowers etc.) and more importantly dangerous spewing of gas from a can that has sat fo a little while and built up pressure, once it it opened. For years we handled containers safely and kept them away from children. We so often cure one problem only to create another!!! One container that I have on hand that just did it again was a Briggs and Stratton Smart-Fill 2 gallon. Dumb-fill in our estimation.

Not said Made Nov 2, 2013, sent to the company Nov 12, 2013, published by CPSC Dec 4, 2013
The product, in the report: Briggs & Stratton Smart-Fill Fuel Filling System, 5-gallon gasoline can.
I purchased a Briggs and Stratton Smart Fill Tank in which to store gasoline.
I filled it with gasoline and followed the instructions as best I could. I tipped the can over to pour gasoline into a portable generator and gasoline began spilling all over my hands and the generator, which was already hot from running for five hours. The generator was NOT running at the time of refilling. My fear using this the first time was that so much of the flammable gasoline that was leaking from the container would touch something hot on the generator and erupt in flames either injuring me, while my hands were covered in gasoline or someone nearby. Possibly a child.
If you are unfamiliar with this product, it is a plastic gasoline container with a special nozzle that is designed to tightly fit on the can and only dispense gasoline when the can is tipped sideways or upside down with pressure applied on the nozzle. In theory, this is a wonderful idea, but, there are too many parts that fall off of the nozzle before the first use and it’s difficult to reassemble correctly do to lack of instructions.
My main concern with this product is that it is fairly complicated to use and the included instructions are only a printed sticker adhered to the side of the can. They are oversimplified given the complexity of setup and operation of the product and I feel that most people will ignore them upon first using this item.
It is my opinion that if the Consumer Product Safety Commission is going to continue to allow this type of item to be sold, the manufacturer should be required to include a printed instruction pamphlet, either inside of the container or tied around the neck of the product explaining the complexity of the product and how to properly assemble it. I think it should also include a list of included parts and how to put them together as having all the loose pieces (caps, gaskets, etc) fall apart upon first opening the container made it difficult to figure out and, I am sure, contributed to the gasoline leaking all over myself, the generator and the concrete on my drive way.
If you look for this product on the Briggs and Stratton website, www.briggsandstratton.com, you will not find it under the list of products or in the list of product manuals in their support section. You will also not find any type of product troubleshooting of FAQ on this product there either.
Last, I encourage you to check out one of their promotional videos which they have posted on youtube.com: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0QCgGrQHtI which shows how to use the product. It does clarify how to use the product, somewhat, but if you read the comments you will notice that the majority of the posts are users who complain about how difficult this thing is to set up and use either due to the product itself or LACK of product documentation.
I ask that you please look into this and encourage the manufacturer or marketer of this product and similar products to include better assembly instructions, a list of parts and better product support for this product. I believe that since this product is sold and used for the storage and dispensing of highly flammable and potentially dangerous liquids, more attention and care should be given to educate and protect the consumer on it’s assembly and use before someone gets seriously injured or killed.

The product, in the report: Plastic Gas Container Smartfill red can
The caller stated that her spouse had stored gas in the container and while it was placed in the sun he noticed that the container had a bulge, he tried to depressed the air, however, the gas blew out. The incident occurred because there was no ventilation and the air built up in the container which could have caused an explosion.
4/10/13 The manufacturer was contacted and she was advised that it was EPA approved and there was nothing else that could be done.
The caller feels that this gas container is a safety hazard and should be reported.
UPDATE: The can says depress spout before use to release pressure. When he didthid it sprayed gas on him out of the spout.

Briggs & Stratton 85043 5 Gallon Spill Proof Metal Gas Can
Gas cans have faulty spouts. Supposedly they are CARB compliant but they leak fuel better than they pour fuel from the spout. I’ve had spouts replaced but the spouts continue to fail making an environmental hazard as well as a huge fire hazard in my home. Amazon will not let me return them, Briggs and Stratton says its not their problem, to contact “The Plastics Group” who will send you replacement spouts but continue to be bad. Please see the video linked below of the cans pouring gasoline from the “closed” spout. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/29062871/Video%20Mar%2007%2C%208%2047%2005%20AM.mov

The product, in the report: Plastic gas can, 5 gallon, carb compliant
I went to use this gas can after filling it up and gas came pouring out from the neck of the container. I double checked the gasket and it was correctly seated. I reinstalled the nozzle and tightened it as much as possible but the can continues to leak from the neck where the nozzle attaches. Attempting to pour with the nozzle removed has the same problem, gas pouring out from around the neck of the container.

The product, in the report: The new type spout on polyethelene gas cans with the green push ring that must be depressed for gas to flow from the can.
We purchased one of the polyethelene gas cans available on Grainger that have the new “environmental” or “pour safe” spout with the green ring that must be depressed to pour the gas from the can. When we started to pour gas the second time, we depressed the green ring and the spout shot raw gas out about 5 feet. We rechecked the instructions for use and tried it again, and again it shot the gas out. This is a VERY dangerous situation and I’m sure it won’t be long before someone is killed or seriously burned by this type spout. These things need to be abolished real soon before one of these dangerous incidents occurs. I tried to find cans without the new spout and was told that it is a new safety requirement. I have never seen a safety requirement that is so inherently dangerous as this thing is. PLEASE check these out immediately before somebody is hurt really badly.

The product, in the report: Portable five gallon gasolene container with special fill nozzle, red in color, molded plastic.
Was filling a lawn tractor gas tank from a 5 gallon plastic container equipped with automatic fill tube. When I put the weight of the tank on the fill tube end to actuate the automatic filling the outer part of the tube suddenly came off and entered the tractor’s gas tank. Since the 5 gallon container was inverted large amounts of gas splashed all over the tractor and also myself. The quickest thing I could think was to continue filling the tractor tank rather than have the gas splashing around. When the tractor tank was full there was still about 2 gallons of gas in the container. I had to remove and invert the container as quickly as possible which I did. When I was through I had spilled a large quanity of gas on the tractor, on my hands and clothing an on the ground. Fortunately no fire occured but the outer tube and other parts are in the tractor gas tank and th 5 gallon container is useless for gas. Briggs & Stratton 5 gallon gas container Model # 528. The following statements are on in the container, “SPILL PROOF SYSTEM” “SMART FILL FUELING SYSTEM” “ Briggs & Stratton Logo”

The product, in the report: Briggs & Stratton 85053 - 5 Gallon Plastic Spill Proof Gas Can
I purchased a Briggs & Stratton 85053 - 5 Gallon Plastic Spill Proof Gas Can for my boat. It worked twice and then failed. It leaked gas on my hands, on my boat, and in the water. This is a hazard to me and to the environment.
