The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. Hurt, no treatment

Made Nov 18, 2024, sent to the company Nov 22, 2024, published by CPSC Dec 9, 2024

The product, in the report: Dawn Platinum Plus Powerwash Dish Spray 16 fl Oz Lemon scent Blue bottle Purchased from Walmart

I used Dawn’s Powerwash according to directions to spray down an aluminum pan, two of them, in an attempt to loosen up the grease. Immediately, I felt that I was inhaling something toxic and felt the affects in my nose and throat. When I tried to sleep throughout the night, my throat because soar and my nose extremely stuffy. I continuously found myself waking up to take sips of water and caught up any mucus. Now, less than 24 hours later, the symptoms are getting worse. My nose is stuffy and my throat is burning and it’s hard to talk because I’m not getting as much oxygen through my airways. My eyes are starting to burn a little. I’ve only drank water and hot tea. It’s not getting better. I did a [REDACTED] search to see if anybody else had this reaction and I found a [REDACTED] board full of similar stories. I called Proctor and Gamble to report it. The young man told me I should see a doctor if it doesn’t get better; however, they aren’t responsible for any medical fees. I asked what were the next steps and should I update them if I see my doctor. He said no. I asked about next steps and the guy said that there aren’t any, but that his team will look into it. He mentioned that someone might contact me in the next two weeks for more information but they don’t take care of any medical expenses. Then I asked about the money back guarantee. The young man agreed to send me a [REDACTED] card for $6, as part of the money back guarantee.

I am in overall great health. I live an active lifestyle and had literally finished a skating session before coming home and washing the dishes with this product. I knew as I was breathing in the fumes that something was wrong. I have used the product before briefly, to wash something small, so the toxicity wasn’t noticable. Plus, I use the liquid soap more; I like it better. I used this Powerwash to break up grease in a pan and that required more sprays. It was actually two pans, but I noticed a problem when i sprayed down the first one. I’ve been struggling to breathe since then.

I would like them to be held accountable. Many people seemed to have suffered from the use of this product.

The product, in the report: Dawn “original” dishwashing liquid labeled with “new clean scent”

Dawn recently changed the formula of their “original” dishwashing liquid to have a “new clean scent.” Whatever chemicals they are using causes immediate headache and some have reported allergic reactions. My wife and I both got headaches and had to discontinue use of the product. Just [REDACTED] “dawn new clean scent complaints” to get a sense of how many people are experiencing reactions.

The product, in the report: Dawn Ultra Platinum Powerwash Dish Spray

I purchased Dawn Ultra Platinum Powerwash Dish Spray due to the store being out of the regular Dawn. The directions are to spray directly onto dishes fully squeezing the trigger for continuous coverage. The dispenser emits a super fine spray of the product onto the dishes and into the surrounding environment. There are chemicals in the product that are known respiratory irritants. Specifically the first ingredient, denatured alcohol. This product made me cough and took my breath. There are no warnings on the label that warn anyone with respiratory problems. It is my concern as a healthcare provider that someone with COPD, asthma, uncompensated CHF, or even an acute respiratory illness may use this product and may end up hospitalized or worse as a result.

The product, in the report: Dawn Dishwashing liquid. It doesn’t matter which one, they all contain the preservative.

I have used Dawn dishwashing liquid for years! Now I can’t use it because it contains Methylisothiazolinone. I have developed a severe allergy to this preservative. My hands and arms break out in small blister-like bumps that are very itchy. Eventually they dry up and leave my skin peeling and flaky. The dry skin then cracks and I have sores. Each time I am exposed to this chemical the reaction gets worse and the healing time takes longer. At first it only was on my hands, then included my wrists. Now it goes up to my elbows! It is painful and itchy! It makes my life miserable. I am terrified of a new outbreak. I have stopped using Dawn, but so many products have it, it is almost impossible to avoid it.
