The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. First aid

Made Feb 27, 2023, sent to the company Mar 2, 2023, published by CPSC Mar 16, 2023

The product, in the report: It is a car air freshener than attaches to vent clips. One air freshener, 0.13 oz package. The name is Yankee Candle Smart Scent Vent Clip - Balsam & Cedar scent #1312857, UPC 86860 15239.

I purchased a new Yankee Candle Smart Scent Vent Clip - Balsam & Cedar scent and was ready to install it in my car. I unpackaged and went to open the seal to release the fragrance. The product presents a laceration hazard, and the design should be modified. It is unsafe. The foil seal hidden within the packaging is actually wider than is visible from the tab at the top, though the consumer would not suspect this going in. When gripping the product from sides, near the exposed tab, I pulled the tab upward from the top to unseal the fragrance. As I did this, the thick, stiff foil seal sliced through my thumb and forefinger, causing a deep cut in my thumb and a smaller cut on my finger. First, I did not expect such a large seal, and I certainly did not expect that I would need to hold the product any special way to avoid slicing my fingers open. I bled quite profusely! I double checked the package--no warning there either, though again, one should not need safety instructions for an air freshener. This product packaging is unsafe and needs a redesign. It should not be on the market as currently designed. I can provide photos if needed.
