The product, in the report: The product is a Febreze Plug-In Scented Oil Warmer, an electrically powered plug-in air freshener designed for continuous use in a standard household wall outlet. The device consists of a plastic plug-in warmer unit with an internal heating element and a removable scented oil refill bottle that attaches to the front of the unit. The warmer is approximately 45 inches tall, made of hard plastic, and plugs directly into a standard 120-volt household outlet. The oil refill bottle is a clear plastic container that allows the remaining liquid to be visible during use. The units were sold as Febreze Plug-Ins and manufactured by Procter & Gamble. Multiple fragrance refills were used with the same type of warmer. The devices were marketed to operate continuously for 3050 days per refill. The products intended purpose is to heat scented oil over time to release fragrance into indoor living spaces.

I used multiple Febreze Plug-In Scented Oil warmers in my home as directed by the manufacturer. During normal use, several units overheated and caused household electrical breakers to trip. At least one device showed visible melting and heat damage at the plug while liquid oil remained inside the refill container.

The devices continued operating despite overheating and visible damage. The refill oil did not fully evaporate, contradicting the products advertised lifespan, while the plug itself appeared to burn internally.

These incidents occurred repeatedly across more than twenty units and multiple refill packs. The overheating, melting, and electrical disruption present a serious fire and electrical hazard to my household. I am concerned about the risk of ignition, property damage, and injury due to the device continuing to draw power while damaged.

Febreze aerosol fragrance makes me have asthma. I cannot breathe when exposed to the product and long after the product is used - the scent remained in the elevator and lobby of my building hours after used. I asked the maintenance man and he told me he is using an air freshener and then showed me the can of Febreze Odor-Fighting Air Freshener - Linen & Sky. I asked him to stop using it because it causes me to have an asthma attack and I cannot breathe.

The product, in the report: The products name is Febreze, small spaces original by Proctor & Gamble. It’s in a plastic self standing container with a volatile liquid inside

I bought a air freshener product by Proctor & Gamble called “Febreze” small spaces original. I had it on a table near my bed. I live alone. This is not a spray, it has a volatile carrier that slowly evaporates out with fregrance, it’s NOT a plug in. I soon began to have trouble breathing, my bronchial went into spasms, I coughed up large amounts of flem from my lungs, I had heavy, painful coughing, I wheezed loudly & was short of breath. I lost 20 LBS in two weeks. I went to the ER twice because I could not breath. The ER doctor said I had acute asthma & the info they gave me mentioned “triggers” that could set off asthma. I have never had asthma or allergies. I have had to spend hundreds of dollars for overpriced asthma inhalers & drugs, I am a low income senior. I finally found my “trigger”, it was the “Febreze” air freshener for small spaces, once I removed that from my room, I began to feel better but I’m still feeling the effects of the toxic volatiles of that product.

The only warning on this product is to not get the liquid in your eyes. I am still short of breath, I feel weak, I still cough up flem but not as much as before.

The product, in the report: febreze air effects linen and sky

Febreze Inhalation Injury [REDACTED], Oct. 16, 2014

Additional Comments that may help to better understand the problem:

An exchange student is living with us. He is very sensitive to bad smells and likes to use air fresheners. Since the bathroom that he and another exchange student share opens into his bedroom, he uses A LOT of air fresheners. After the incident, he threw away 7 recently emptied cans: 4 [REDACTED], 1 Febreze Hawaian and 2 Febreze Air effects Linen and Sky, which was the product used when symptoms occurred. There had been problems in the bathroom a week prior to the main incident. After working on it in the evening, I had tightness in my lungs which I attributed to mold exposure. It went away on its own by next morning. I had to keep walking through the Febreze saturated bedroom to work on the bathroom but thought nothing of it. (No irritating chemicals were used in cleanup, only [REDACTED] water which I had utilized before without ill effect)

On the 16th, I had been working hard outside, walked into the kitchen/dining area and noticed a strong Febreze smell. The student had fixed himself food and was sitting at the table eating. He had sprayed an entire can of Febreze Linen and Sky upstairs and it clung to him (he had not used it downstairs). Almost immediately my lungs (bronchii - I’m a nurse) clenched up (worse than the week before) and I opened windows then left for a brisk one mile walk to air out my lungs. However, that did not help. Then I drank 2+ liters of water with lemon juice to try and flush out the irritants. By morning, it was not better, so I got worried, called P&G hotline and was advised to go see a doctor. I went to the ER where I was diagnosed with an inhalation injury. I was unable to finish the outdoor work I had started, spent a whole day at Urgent Care/ER/Pharmacy and missed another full day due to extreme fatigue either from the [REDACTED] or the injury itself. There were 2 milder repeat incidents 10/25 and 10/27 even though no more product was actively used, due to smelly residue on furniture, clothes, book bag. Then I spent several hours at my Doctor’s office for a follow up visit. I’m still waiting to see if this will be an ongoing issue, I have been unable to use certain restrooms which were saturated with air freshener.

I had no respiratory issues, asthma or bronchitis before this; very healthy.

My main complaint against Febreze is that there is no warning against spraying for more than a few seconds or even using the entire can in one shot.
