The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: NAPAfire gel fuel

The published recall of NAPAfire gel fuel focuses on or is limited to incidents wherein the splatter and resulting damage occurred when gel fuel was added to a burning or hot pot. Our incident did not involve that scenario, but rather occurred with only the initial fuel cup load and with no one within 10 feet of the pot. We heard a sizzle/crackle and then saw the nearby artificial table arrangement on our patio table burst into flames, to be 1/4 destroyed before doused by guests with 3-4 glasses of water and tea.

The product, in the report: Napa Home and Garden, Fire Gel Fuel, Gel that is used to be burned in firepots

I was at my friend [REDACTED]’s house in Arizona on July 3, 2011. She had a fire pot using Napa fire gel fuel manufactured by Napa Home and Garden. The fire pot had been burning for a few hours and then once the gel was depleted and the flame had gone out, she went to refill the firepot approximately 15-20 minutes later. Not a second after she began to refill the firepot, there was a huge explosion. I just remember a huge ball of fire in my face. The next thing I remember was standing in my friend’s kitchen with her and another friend holding ice packs and wet towels on my arm. I was extremely upset and in shock. Once I was a little calmer my friend explained that I caught on fire. They said that I took off running and that they had to push me to the ground and rolled me in the dirt until the fire was out. They also had to rip my shirt off as it was also in flames. My arm was severely burned, the blisters were huge and covered most of my right arm. My hair had also been burnt badly. All I could smell was burnt hair and skin. I was in excruciating pain. Once at the ER I was told that I had severe 2nd degree burns. My throat had also been burnt and I had several blisters in the back of my throat. It has now been one month and the burns are almost healed, but there are still some scabs and deep scarring.

The product, in the report: Napa Home and Garden FireGel

My Girlfriend and I purchased Napa Home and garden indoor/outdoor firegel at Bed Bath and Beyond. My girlfriend used the gel on May 10, 2011. When she attempted to snuff the firepot at the end of the night with the Firepot’s snuffer, the flaming gel erupted volcano style throwing gel at least 5 feet across her living room causing nearly $3000.00 in personal property damage in addition to an as of yet undetermined amount of cosmetic damage to her apartment (carpeting and painting). I reported the incident to Napa Home and Garden as well and have yet to receive a response.
