The product, in the report: BirdBrain Fuel Gel 32 Ounce Bottle

[REDACTED} was badly burned by Fuel Gel, which ignited and exploded out of the plastic bottle of Fuel Gel as his wife was attempting to fill a Fire Pot, which both she and Mr. [REDACTED] believed to be extinguished. The [REDACTED] were enjoying an evening outside with another couple, when they noted that their Bird Brain brand fire pot had gone out, i.e. extinguished. Believing it to be empty (out of fuel gel) Mrs.[REDACTED]took the fire pot into the garage where the Fuel Gel bottle was located. Mr. [REDACTED] went in also to plug in the radio to play music. Mrs.[REDACTED] set the firepot on a work bench. She took the top off of the 32 oz BirdBrain Fuel Gel bottle and held it in her right hand. Because it was dark in the garage, Mrs. [REDACTED] lit a long tipped lighter (fire starter or torch) so that she could see the opening of the fire pot, where she intended to pour the fuel gel. She was holding the lighter in her left hand and she was holding it away from the opening of the fire pot (6 to 9 inches). The lit flame was approximately a foot from the bottle of fuel gel. Mrs. [REDACTED] had not started to pour the gel in to the fire pot opening. The bottle was not even tipped to horizontal, when she heard a sound like someone squeezing an empty plastic bottle of soda and instantaneously a fireball erupted from the bottle and sprayed flaming gel all over the work bench and all over her husband who was bent over to her left plugging in the radio. The gel ignited Mr. [REDACTED] t-shirt and was burning his right arm and right knee. They could not put out the flames. They removed Mr. [REDACTED] t-shirt and his back was still on fire. Mr. [REDACTED]dropped and rolled on the grass outside of the garage to extinguish the flames. The t-shirt remained on the floor of the garage engulfed in flames. [REDACTED] took her husband to the nearest hospital, where he was treated for second-degree burns to his right knee, right arm and his back. The burns covered approximately 6% of his body. Mr. [REDACTED] followed up on an outpatient basis with the hospital’s wound care center for several weeks. He continues to have visible scarring where the second-degree burns were.

The product, in the report: Citrenella firepot fuel gel

My wife was seriously burned on July 18th, 2011, when a citrenella fire pot exploded showering flaming gel all over her chest, neck, and arms. A woman had tried to light the firepot, didn’t think it had lit, and poured more fuel into it. She could not see the flame. The gel was Birdbrain firepot fuel gel. My wife sustained second and third degree burns to her face, neck, chest, arms and hands. She spent 4 weeks in the trauma burn unit at the University of Michigan Hospital, three weeks of which she had to be completely sedated. She had extensive grafting and plastic surgery to all affected areas and has a VERY long recovery ahead of her.

The product, in the report: Fuel Gel

A friend of the husband and wife purchased fuel gel at Wal-Mart (Birdbrain brand) along with the “Firepot” from an internet website. The husband and wife were sitting on the other side of a picnic table talking. The friend who had purchased the fuel pot and gel had commented that the fuel gel doesn’t last very long and it was expensive. They had been talking and the pot had burned out/used up the fuel and the friend went to get the fuel gel container. The friend, on the other side of the picnic table from the husband and wife, poured the gel into the pot and flames shot out immediately and towards and on to the husband and wife. They were on fire and were rolling on the ground and trying to put out the flames. The wife’s hair was on fire as well. The wife received first, second and possibly third degree or deep partial thickness burns to her face and arm while the husband received first and second degree burns to his arm. The tablecloth burned and was thrown away because the friend was so traumatized.

The product, in the report: BirdBrain Firepot Fuel Gel. Its Stock-Keeping Unit (SKU) is 3913805081. The product was purchased from Big Lots.

In Madison, AL on May 29 2011 around 8:00pm CST, a ceramic fuel pot was lit while a family lounged in the backyard of the victim’s house. Due to a lack of fuel gel, the flame quickly died down and more fuel gel was then poured into the pot. Once the gel touched the fire pot, it immediately ignited and exploded, spraying onto the face, neck, and upper torso of the victim. The flaming gel stuck to the front of the victim’s body as his shirt and skin went up in flames. This caused first, second and third degree burns to over 40% of his body. The manufacturer of the firepot fuel gel is BirdBrain. The product is called BirdBrain Firepot Fuel Gel. Its product number is SKU 391380508. The fuel gel was purchased from Big Lots.

The product, in the report: Firepot fuel gel

On May 29, 2011, I was pouring fire gel into my new frie bowl and when I lit I didn’t see the flame, and I realized I had not put enough gel into the bowl, so as I was pouring some more the fuel in the bottle exploded and it kind of went everywhere. So I sat the bowl down, within seconds, my brother who was sitting within two to three feet from me, shoes caught on fire. I tried to fan the fire off his feet and within seconds it had caught his pants and the fire was up to his waist. While we were trying to put the fire out on him, my sandals caught on fire and within seconds, the fire was up my legs. Both of us sustained second degree burns.

The product, in the report: Bird Brain brand Gel used in ceramic fire pot

Sitting at a patio table with the fire pot in the middle. The fire had gone out and one person was adding more gel to the pot. Another person at the table lit a lighter (it was about 6-8 inches from the pot) and the gel exploded out, caught the flame and a fire ball came at me and caught my front side on fire, including my hair. The gel was burning and burned the skin on my neck, chest, and right hand. I rolled on the deck to put it out and someone jumped on me to help put it out. The deck caught fire and continued to burn for a few seconds as well. I visited the KU Burn Center and was told that I have 2nd degree burns. I received Silver ointment and wraps to keep it bandaged for 10-14 days.
