  1. Emergency room

Made Jul 18, 2026, sent to the company Jul 22, 2026, published by CPSC Aug 5, 2026

The product, in the report: 1 gallon of Sherwin Williams Emerald uretane Trim Enamel Satin paint

Sherwood Williams has a well known paint, emerald urethane enamel. I got a bad batch that will not cure. We tried to wait the 30 days but it has caused a severe reaction with my wife. I had to take her to an urgent care visit and an emergency room visit a few days later followed up by her family doctor with “contact dermatitis”. Everyone says she needs to stay out of our home and we have no where to go. I, her husband with 20years experience a way back applied the paint and my wife went out. I had proper ventilation as they were kitchen cabinet frames and the doors were painted outside. As I was applying it after the first door, I called the store manager and said this is setting up too quickly isnt there something to slow it down and he replied maybe a bit of water but recommended to put it on as is. and After the application, within a day or so after she got home she felt something was off. When she got close to the kitchen, she started getting itchy arms and her face was flush so she stayed away from the area. After some time I started checking into this paint and found about this “off-gassing” and called to complain and the CITY manager got back and gave my money back and gave me a gallon of their symmetry paint to finish the project. I told him there was something seriously wrong with this paint.

On top of all this the city manager had me put a coat of the symmetry paint over the problematic paint and said it will seal it and I said that is is not done the 30 day curing time yet and he said to trust him it will seal it. I made matters worse and my research said it will now take even longer to off-gas.

Then they had the Regional manager contact me and offered us a 5 night stay at a hotel on them but I havent been reimbursed yet. Then they rented an air scrubber that was useless without a carbon filter so they got one. All along they say we sold millions of gallons of this paint and have not heard of any problem. I told the Regional manager, [REDACTED] that that was a lie as I already checked into this and there have been several thousand complaints from people that this paint has affected. I told them I must have got a bad batch and they gave me a material safety data sheet along with the paint ingredient limitations. I used AI to check the chemical limitations and this is what it came up with. They tried to downplay it but I asked AI for a fact check, not any ones opinion. Here is what It came up with.

Lab documentation shows. the 9.7 maximum allowable PH limit and a near maximum mid shear viscosity caused a severe performance failure trapping chemical solvents that continuously off-gas. The Rheometer Mid Shear Viscosity minimum being 16.7 and maximum being 24.7, having a 23.969 reading shows the paint was the upper ceiling of thickness (means it was extremely heavy, gummy and dense, allowing it not to flow smoothly leaving a thicker than normal layer. These two factors together caused the paint to act like a trap. The 9.7 caused he very top to dry instantly into a solid plastic wrap as soon as it hit the air, I called Colin and told him it was drying too fast if he had something to slow it down like they used in paints like in water and oil based paints. (Emulsa bond or flotrol) He said no, just water but he did not recommend anything.

Since then our lives have been a living hell. Being 69 years old myself and my wife 66, we are in no condition to live live this. Being a minor stroke survivor I am not supposed to get stressed. We can not stay in our own house and have no where to go. We have had to sleep in you car several nights, slept on the back porch with a roof but no screens with fans on and still get bit by bugs I had to get a hotel 2 times with my money on a fixed Social Security income. I am trying to get someone to rip the 2 wall cabinets off the wall along with the faces of my 3 base cabinets. We need help and they know there is an issue with several people using this paint.

I filed a homeowners claim today but and my agent doesnt think it will help.

The product, in the report: paint (purple in color)

This was used on the door frames, and on the interior and exterior of this facility for 14 years and was initially used between (approx..) 1992 – 2003.

The paint was also used in gyms and summer programs when kids were out of schools, and came to the facility.

This is a senior complex, for people who need assistance.

This is an industrial oil based paint. A prior painter, who worked at the facility (name unavailable) told the consumer that this paint contained lead, but the consumer never had it tested for confirmation. He asked the city and local government to test the paint, but they have not been willing to do so or listen to his concerns. He has even tried to raise the concerns at local government meetings.

Some of the people that reside at the facility have become sick over the years and he believes that the paint may have been a factor or the cause of their health issues.

UPDATED ON 2/28/2025: [I [REDACTED] am representing 11 people who are sick from this paint used at the [REDACTED] address is [REDACTED] plus I got tested for asbestos besides lead paint it affected me and 11 people I am representing plus the public and the people that died from the exposure. 2020 filed a lawsuit the judge closed our case without giving justice. The product, in the report: porch and floor enamel paint

Consumer stated that his wife is suffering from an adverse effect to either the floor paint, crack sealant or combination of both to the odor emitting from the products. His wife has suffered and some burning in her lungs. The consumer has noticed if she stays outside and gets some fresh air she feels better. The consumer stated that the product has permeated in the home so the effects of the products effect his wife no matter where she is in the home. The consumer’s wife has visited a local doctor and was told that she may have long term ramifications if she is exposed to these products long term.

The consumer’s wife was never admitted to a hospital. The doctor recommended she not remain in their home for some time. Following Dr’s orders, the consumer’s wife left the home and returned to the home 2 weeks later. Her symptoms returned after staying in the basement for only 10 minutes. The consumer has been in contact with both companies of the binding agent of the cracks and the floor paint. The consumer has asked that the firms work in conjunction to address the issue.

The consumer has the MSDS for both products. The consumer called the sealant company several weeks ago. (cannot recall the exact date) The consumer called the paint company on July 8th 2011. The company didn’t have any input as far as his wife’s health. The consumer called the paint company about his wife’s health also on July 8th. The paint company has given her no recommendation as far his wife’s health concerns. The consumer bought the crack sealant May 19th, 2011 and bought the floor paint June 29, 2011.
