On August 13, 2023 I bought on Amazon from the the Rust-Oleum Store: Rust-Oleum 7778830 High Heat Spray Paint, 12 Ounce, Bar-B-Que Black, 12 Fl Oz. Some time after that, I painted my tiny wood stove and cured it outside my camper in preparation for the South Dakotan weather that was afoot. The stove is my only source of heating. Since temperatures dropped, I began using the stove and it’s been weeks the smell never really goes away when in use. Last night, October 17, 2023, I woke up with my nostrils and lungs burning and the stove paint odor was really strong. I decided to try to “recure” the stove by wiping it down with vegetable oil the way they do with cast iron. Scarily, I find that the paint continually wipes off. There is no point when it stops coming off. So I have been inhaling this stuff for weeks! I have gone through 1.5 rolls of paper towel and it is still wiping off like chalk. I was fooled that the stove was cured because when you wipe it with a dry towel the paint does not come off. But when you wipe it with oil, it wipes off like chalk.

The product, in the report: Rustoleum 2X Paint and Prime Gloss White

Bought a brand new can of Rustoleum 2X Ultra Cover Paint and Primer in Gloss White. Was using it the same day, shook it as directed and started painting, in short bursts. On the fifth or sixth spray, the can popped loudly. I looked, and the bottom of the can had popped out, went from concave to convex. I feel like it might explode. I think it is unsafe. I took photos of the can and wrapped it in two garbage bags and placed it in my trash container, to be disposed 7/26. The product, in the report: This was a black countertop paint that was applied to our laminate countertops.

I live with my wife and two year old son. We used three cans of Rust-Oleum black satin countertop coating in our house. The paint didn’t work, so my wife sanded the paint leaving the black dust from the paint all over and coated it with a feather cement. The original coats of paint went on in March, and the sanding happened around July 24, 2018. We had cleaned up the dust with a wet rag and vacuum, but I am very concerned about lead exposure for my son. Additionally, the paint ruined our countertops and we are in the process of having them replaced.

The product, in the report: Rust-Oleum Gloss Protective Enamel paint in Canvas White, 12 oz. aerosol can.

On July 18,2016, I was using a 12 oz. can of Rust-Oleum paint. I purchased the product in April or May of 2016. From the time I bought the aerosol can of paint until the first time I used it, I kept the can stored in my shop. My shop is insulated and never gets above 90 degrees Fahrenheit or below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. I have used Rust-Oleum products for years without incident. The can was not near a heat source of any kind while in my shop. The first time I used the product was the day that it exploded into my face. On this particular day, I was just outside my shop repainting the rims of one of my lawn mowers. I removed the plastic cap on the aerosol can, gently shook the can to engage the agitator ball to mix the paint, and began to spray the lawnmower rim. Suddenly and without warning, I heard a loud pop, felt extreme pressure on my face, and could no longer see out of both of my eyes. The can had exploded and shot like a rocket into my face. My left eye was protruding from my orbital socket. I was rushed to the hospital. I suffered many injuries as a result of the can exploding in my face, those injuries include, but are not limited to, the following: bilateral fracture of the frontal sinuses, cribriform plate fracture, left orbital roof fracture, non-displaced fracture of the right orbital floor, fractures of the medial orbital walls, bilateral fracture of nasal bones and nasal septum, pneumocephalus (traumatic), subarachnoid hemorrhage, temporary left eye blindness, lacerations to the left brow and left eyelid and face requiring hundreds of stitches, extreme facial pain, loss of smell, loss of taste, and lower back pain.

The product, in the report: Rustoleum Rust Inhibitor Can

Purchased Rust-Oleum (Sept, 2015?) Odor in pantry couldn’t recognize. Next Day very strong. Started taking pantry apart. Called neighbor in to help identify And locate odor. As we’re looking it was dripping onto his shoe. It was coming From ‘Rustolleum can’. The product didn’t have any holes in can. Never got to Use it as I was waiting to spray outdoor furniture to store for season. Looked on Back of can and the warnings were quite scary.

Contains distillates. Very harmful. May affect the brain and nervous systemCause dizziness-eye skin nose and throat irritation. Exposure to heat may cause Bursting. Reports to over exposure with reported brain and nervous system Damage. Vapors may ignite explosively. Do not smoke-tum off all pilot Jights, And on and on - see back of can.

I have an autistic daughter with a breathing problem and I’m amazed how they Were even allowed to be put on a shelf, where it could have done exactly what It did in my home exposing many people to the danger this product can cause.

I called the number (800 3233584) Rustoleum customer service and spoke with [REDACTED]for Rusteoleum he gave me report # [REDACTED], told me to wash floor with Soap and water only, floor walls shelves dishes this product could have dripped Onto and next business day give this number to them and tell what happened. Spoke with [REDACTED] (800 481 4785) and she gave me a different file [REDACTED] of My complaint not customer service #.

I told her I would send her pictures of the can and all the corresponding numbers Associated with the can and a picture of the can. She just wanted the can. I told Her I would not send the can until my complaint was registered as this was my Only proof of the can. I got nowhere with her so I then asked for her supervisor And that’s how I got in touch [REDACTED]. I e-mailed Pictures of everything including the can I showed her all the dishes that I was afraid To use, pots and pans that had the leakage in them and I would throw away as I Would be afraid to use them again after such a dangerous product was involved. BUT she wanted the can. She sent a bubble pack for the pictures but nothing for The can. I asked if she could provide a container for the can as I didn’t want it to Get destroyed and then she could say that the can was damaged and that’s why The can exploded. She never sent it. I was washing floors, walls and shelves for Two days as the odor was very much present in my home.

She deleted pictures I sent to her showing the damage of all my dishes and bowls And pots and baking platters which I had to throw out for fear of using them. I Cannot believe such a large corporation such as Rustoleum can be so blaze Regarding such a serious matter. I received a check for $5.00. No apologies No reasoning no nothing HERE’S $5 NOW GO AWAY. Just a $5 check. All the All the scrubbing of walls, floors shelves, all the fear for the damage just the Vapors could have caused just tossed away with $5-.-.:........ now be gone. I’d like to Bring to your attention medication in the stores are put under lock and key and a Product so dangerous is just put on the shelf and BUYER BEWARE is the Prevalent attitude.

I’d like to know what if anything I can and should do to make the public aware of This dangerous product and more important have Rustoleum take responsibility For their product. I don’t know what if anything I should ask for as I ask you how Do you put a price tag on your family’s health and well being?

In closing I’d like to ask what Consumer Affairss is doing about a dangerous Product such as this to protect the consumer or to make the consumer aware of The danger involved with this product.

The product, in the report: Rust-Oleum 7779830 Protective Enamel Gloss Spray Paint, Black Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Gloss Protective Enamel Spray is the No. 1 rust-preventive paint available

On, 5/3/15, at about 2:45pm, [REDACTED] was shaking a new can of Rust-Oleum black spray paint. He shook it for about a minute and as he put his right hand on the lid to remove it, the can exploded in his hands.

There was a loud explosion and the can burst open. The bottom portion of the can detached from the can, striking him on my chest, just below his throat causing a burn, his skin was cut and there was extreme swelling and bruising. His right thumb sustained a fracture as well.

I, [REDACTED], spouse to [REDACTED], took photos and after we cleaned the paint off of his skin, I transported him to PrimeCare. He received medical attention and was diagnosed with an abrasion to his anterior chest and a fracture of the metacarpal bones of his right hand. The paint got all over him, his clothes and several items in the area where he was standing. The marble from inside of the can was found in the area where he had been standing and the bottom of the can was later located in our neighbors back yard, about 30’ from where he had been standing. There is a 6’ block wall between our property. The lid and push button were never located.

The can was purchased less than 6 months ago at Home Depot and had been stored in a cabinet in the garage and the temperature in the garage was about 80 degrees. He removed it from the cabinet and walked outside to where the item was that he was going to paint. The can was never dropped nor did it make contact with anything while he was shaking it. A close examination of the can shows that the bottom blew out and the can separated at the seam. The can has the UPC# of 020066777982. We will be retaining all of the parts of the can.

The product, in the report: Rust-Oleum Gloss Protective Enamel (Black)

Had a can of Rust-Oleum spray paint stored in a wall cabinet in my garage. Last Friday night it exploded spontaneously, apparently with considerable force since it blew the cabinet doors open & spattered black paint over a considerable area (including two of my vehicles). Fortunately no one was in the garage when it happened, but there was significant damage to the interior of the garage and its contents. I am a physician and in my estimation there was the potential for serious injury if someone had been nearby when the can exploded. What is baffling to me is why it exploded in the first place. It had been in the cabinet undisturbed for some time, and there were no extreme temperatures to blame for the incident. My fear is that it could happen elsewhere with more serious consequences. I took photos of the damage that morning & have kept the can that caused the problem.

The product, in the report: Rust-oleum universal advanced formula satin paint and primer in one white

My family and I were shopping at Home Depot on June 3, 2012 close to 1:00 in Indianapolis, IN. I intended to purchase the Rust-oleum universal advanced formula satin paint and Primer in one spray paint in white. It was in the back of the shopping cart. My 16-month son reached back, grabbed it and was able to spray himself in the face. The red safety clip had not been removed from trigger prior to use and my son was still able to spray himself in the face. As of now...the clip still remains in normal prior to sale position and can be easily sprayed. Thus resulting in possible accidents. This is a faulty safety system. Luckily my son is ok, but I would like for other bottles to be checked for similar faults for the safety of others.

The product, in the report: Rustoleum Spray Gloss Enamel Paint

Yesterday evening I spray painted a garden bench with a can of Rustoleum Spray Point. After completing the job, the tip of my finger was numb. It is still numb today. I did some research online and found that many many people have reported this type of injury sometimes lasting for months without complete healing.

This is very concerning since typing/keyboarding is a large part of my employment.

I would like to know if others have complained about this problem and whether the industry has done anything to prevent these injuries.
