The product, in the report: PPG Paints - Pure Performance Interior Latex Eggshell, various colors Model Pure Performance Interior Latex Eggshell WPB 9-310XI B500
Applying interior latex paint throughout house. Immediately noticed severe congestion , sneezing and asthma-like symptoms. Used nasal spray for 3 days per the label with temporary relief of congestion as a result. As the nasal spray wore off, congestion would return. After a few weeks (with continued painting) a rash around my eyes started to develop. I suspected an allergy to something in the paint. I had casually glanced through the Product Safety Data Sheets at the first onset and missed the single brief mention of isothiazolinones in the ingredients. It was not listed on the paint can label. About 8 years ago, I had a reaction to some sunscreen I was using that had methylchloroisothiazolinone in it. My dermatologist performed a patch test and that was the only item I had a positive reaction (allergy) to. In order to gain some relief, I visited my dermatologist and received 2 steroid injections.
Upon researching further, I understand that isothiazolinones were identified as the “allergen of the year” in 2013, and that their use in cosmetics is stricter, but also that it is in decline. It must be listed in the ingredients, so that makes it relatively easy to avoid.
Isothiazolinones are used in about 95% of the latex paint products on the market today, but are NOT required to be listed on the product label and MAY NOT be listed on the SDS forms. This includes products noted as “Low-VOC” or “No-VOC”, which implies that they are healthier than products with higher VOC content.
For people with sensitivities to isothiazolinones such as myself, it presents a false sense of security. I happened to know what product to be looking for due to my previous positive test. Someone without this knowledge could postpone treatment until their reactions are much more severe.
Additionally, there is no real remedy with this product. It isn’t like I can paint over the walls with another paint that doesn’t have isothiazolinones in them as there are very few manufacturers available.
