The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: ARM & HAMMER Pet Fresh Dry Carpet Cleaner LOT E16004

Just find out that this product was re-called back in 2016, was looking at the website of LOWES for an appliance re-call when I came across this product re-call. Was completely appalled due to the fact that the company never made the re-call. When I see the effects on immunocompromise Individuals, I’m furious I was about to use it again this weekend. But by the light of my HIGER POWER, I was saved. But I recall using this product many times before and now I’m questioning my decline in health as I’m wheelchair-bound at the age of 57 and being home at all times while using this product. Why this and other companies allow to do that? What about my health and others. For the past 4 yrs., this has been in my home, my sanctuary, my peaceful home. What I’m supposed to do?

The product, in the report: Arm & Hammer OXI CLEAN Dirt Fighters PET FRESH CARPET ODOR ELIMINATOR VACUUM BOOSTER Loosens & Helps Lift up to __% More Dirt 42.6 oz (2LB.10.6 oz) 1.21kg UPC CODE 33200 11443

On 8-8-19, my husband, [REDACTED], purchased for the very first time, Arm & Hammer product Pet Fresh Carpet Odor Eliminator and in the evening, our pet dog urinated on the rug in our bedroom. My husband followed the directions on the package and soaked up the urine and let it dry overnight.

In the morning, about 6:00 a.m. he sprinkled the product on the carpet area which was about a 12” across and waited 15 min. as directed. The next step was to vacuum the carpet. As soon as he turned on the vacuum and disturbed the product, the odor produced was totally overwhelming and triggered in me an asthma attack.

I immediately left the bedroom, closed the door behind me and took my inhaler to help me breathe. My husband immediately turned off the vacuum and opened all the windows in the bedroom and turned on the fan to help remove the product from the room. Then, he vacuumed the carpet area for about 5 minutes to remove the product. The odor continued to be overwhelming!

He then called the Arm & Hammer customer service to report the incident and to find out if there was a way to neutralize the product to help clear the bedroom air. By this time, [REDACTED] was beginning to feel a tightness in his chest and he does not have asthma.

The customer service rep. could not find any information on how to neutralize the product and suggested cleaning the area but not to introduce a new product. My husband inquired about using regular baking soda and the rep. thought it might work.

My comment was to label the product SCENTED and to put a warning on the label that it is not to be used by customers who have asthma or allergies to scents.

Next, [REDACTED] called the Arm & Hammer Medical Line and reported the incident. This rep. also could not find any information on how to neutralize the odor but suggested cleaning the area with dish soap & lots of water, soaking it up and letting it dry. This was 3.5 hours later and the smell in the bedroom is still very strong. Since the incident, we have opened every window and door in the entire house and have stood outside to clear our lungs.

It is now 5 hours later and [REDACTED] has cleaned the carpet with dish soap and warm water. Then he sprinkled baking soda on the area and let it sit for an hour. The odor is starting to dissipate.

I believe that if I would have been directly involved with this product, I would have ended up in the ER receiving medical treatment for my asthma attack.

No product should create a situation that causes an asthma reaction and takes 5 hours with additional cleaning for the odor to begin to dissipate!!!

The ingredients that creates this product need to be analyzed for health issues - I may not be the only customer that has had a severe asthma reaction to this product.

If the ingredients are not harmful to consumers, then this product definitely needs to be labeled SCENTED and carry a warning label that says that it causes allergy and asthma reactions!

I used Arm & Hammer Carpet & Room Pet Fresh Odor Eliminator.

An hour or so after my son became sick...coughing and sneezing....I assumed it was allergies and never considered it might be the carpet freshener.

The next morning he woke up coughing, sneezing, runny nose and a bleeding nose. I woke up with itchy painful eyes.

I determined it was the carpet cleaner...as after we left the house for a short time the symptoms disappeared. Reentering the apartment...we had problems again.

I did research and found that this product has been linked to animals getting sick as well as dying. It has put people in the hospital and has caused all kinds of problems.

At least 1 of the ingredients has been listed as toxic.
