The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Dryer Sheets, Outdoor Fresh Scent

I started using Bounce Dryer Sheets, Outdoor Fresh scent. I immediately started noticing a terrible, itchy, raised red rash with welts over all parts of my body that touched the clothes. I did not initially make the connection to the new dryer sheets. I visited multiple doctors over several weeks and tried various prescription medications, and nothing helped. Finally I thought of the dryer sheets. I re-washed all my clothes and towels without the dryer sheets, and this almost immediately solved the issue.

The product, in the report: Bounce “free & gentle” dryer sheets 240ct box

Product claims to be free from perfumes and has been in the past. A box bought (but just opened) in May 2022 caused a severe allergic reaction as it has a fragrance added to it. I reported it to the company on [REDACTED] who spouted off about how their QC is so stringent etc. I then went directly to the Bounce website to compare ingredients and found many reports from 2022 of the exact same issue with the product yet no warning was put out and no recall was put in place.

  6. No one hurt

Made Feb 5, 2015, sent to the company Mar 11, 2015, published by CPSC Mar 25, 2015

The product, in the report: Dryer Sheets

Both my cat and I had severe reactions after switching from generic Safeway dryer sheets to Bounce Dryer Sheets. She developed contact dermatitis and I have had respiratory issues since switching to them February 1, 2015.

After just getting over a bad cold, I decided to wash just my pillowcases and wait to do my entire bedding until the weekend. After washing the pillowcases, I’d find a few hours after going to sleep, I’d wake up with severe coughing fits. Thinking I’d just re-infected them with my cold somehow, I washed them again with all my bedding - blankets, cover, etc. That evening, and every evening since, I continue to wake up within hours of retiring to bed with this severe coughing.

My cat, who’ve I’ve had for about 4 years, is a heat hog and generally sleeps on my legs every night. I woke up Monday morning, after doing all the linens the evening before, to find she wasn’t on the bed but instead hiding under the bed. She finally surfaced and was running around all over - top speed like something was chasing her. She’d cower down in the middle of the floor, run, stop, lick frantically at her foot, her back, run, stop, lick again. I went to pet her and she acted like I was going to hurt her, running from my hand. Thinking she might have just fallen off the bed and hurt herself, I went to work and returned home to find her in the same condition. She eventually came to me and sat on my lap for about 2 hours, getting up every few minutes to move like she just wasn’t comfortable. I contacted a vet friend to see if I needed to get her to an emergency clinic, and after discussing everything, she advised giving her a small amount of [REDACTED], which I did. Before going to bed, I put the old heavier blanket on the bed which I hadn’t laundered yet and woke to find her sleeping between my legs again. Upon waking up, again a few hours after going to bed, in a severe coughing fit, I thought about the dryer sheets and removed them from all of my pillows. Coughing stopped and I was able to get back to sleep.

I’ve done a little research online and am surprised to find dryer sheets aren’t regulated with regards to what they can put on them (in them). As both my cat and I had reactions to Bounce Dryer Sheets specifically (which I’d be happy to give up the remainder of the box if you’d like it for testing),

Thankfully, I’d just spent the weekend at my boyfriend’s house and did the bulk of my clothing laundry at his house - with the exception of my bedding.

I like to think I’m an average healthy 40-year old individual this reaction to Bounce Dryer Sheets alarmed me and made me think how many parents may have lost a child to SIDS due to these unregulated dryer sheets? The babies can’t remove themselves or the sheets to get away from them.

My general health is good (aside from that cold), I have a few known allergies to medications where I get hives, but have no known respiratory issues. My cat gets annual check ups, so I’d say she’s in good general health as well. I don’t smoke, I don’t live in a high air pollution area and neither of us had any issues with any other dryer sheets prior to introducing these Bounce Dryer Sheets to the household.

The product, in the report: Bounce 4 in 1 Fresh Linen dryer sheet chemicals on children’s clothing

On Tuesday morning about 9:30 AM, August 9, 2011, I spent about 1/2 hour outdoors with 3 nephews and a niece (ages 2-9) whose clothes had been dried with Bounce 4 in 1 Fresh Linen dryer sheets. We were picking cosmos flowers and cucumbers from my gardens.

By afternoon, my eyes were burning, I had severe headache, chest pains, gastrointestinal pain, and nerve pains along my spine and generally felt sick. I continued to be bedridden for the next week.
