After a few weeks of use, my husband had an entire-body allergic reaction to this product. The rash appeared on Tuesday, December 7th and has not been fully resolved. His throat was irritated and closed and his entire body was covered in hives including behind his ears and on his eyelids. His physician prescribed [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] to manage the symptoms. My 1 year old son has also been waking up with a rash on his face from sleeping on sheets washed with this detergent.

We used the detergent as directed and washed clothes, bedding, and cloth diapers.

No injuries have occurred at this point but he has missed two days of work due to the symptoms.

After searching online, this appears to be a frequent concern from many users, reported as early as 2013. Costco does not permit reviews for this product on their website, which would have prevented me from purchasing it if I knew the irritation risks.

While the Costco website does not allow reviews, you can see where the product is listed on [REDACTED] there are over 30 reviews where people have reported severe allergic reactions to this product.

7/6/18 Caller is reporting that the laundry detergent her next door neighbor was using caused chemicals to disperse into her living room which caused her to have an allergic reaction. She stated after inhaling it she started feeling shaky, abdominal pains in her left side, swollen tongue, alcohol smell , she took [REDACTED] tablets to alleviate her illness, the symptoms were followed by tightness in her chest. Her spouse then rushed to asked the neighbor to turn off her unit to prevent further health problems. She had to move to another room, it took about an hour for her to get her heart rhythm back to normal. Caller stated that if her spouse was not there to assist it might have been fatal.

Caller stated that her neighbor gave her a report for the product from EWG that it is rated F because of the high concentration which causes respiratory, reproductive harm etc. She stated that Ethanol is listed on the MSDS which she is allergic to. Caller stated that she contacted the retailer to report the incident but they were not very helpful. She feels that this product is a health hazard and should be reported.

The product, in the report: Kirkland Signature Ultra Clean premium laundry detergent with “refreshing scent” and “patented catch release technology” aka ODOR eliminating technology. Safe for all HE washing machines - these are all the various descriptions located on the front of a large bright red container. Size of container is 5.73L(1.51 GAL) 194 FL OZ for 126 loads.

Ran out of laundry detergent - have used “kirkland” brand from Costco for over 5 years with no problems. Brought home Kirkland signature Ultra Clean premium laundry detergent, refreshing scent with “Patented catch release technology aka “odor eliminating technology” safe for HE washing machines. Because we stock up on Costco products, we later discovered in our research that a new formula was introduced by Costco in March 2016, that we had not bought until February 2017. The size of the container is 194 fl oz for 126 loads. Information on scan label was ITM./ART.845613 above - and 096619316540 below. On February 2, I did a load of whites with the above described detergent, and during the process of pulling out the clothes and folding them, I was shocked by the overpowering and nauseating “perfume” smell on the clothing to the point where I called and asked my husband if he had spilled his cologne and wiped it up with a tee shirt or something?! His answer was no and I could find no other reason - so went ahead and put clothes away figuring odor would subside. Odor did not subside AT ALL! Husband called from work next day saying his tee shirt reeked of “cheap perfume” and to wash all tee shirts again. On February 5th, we rewashed said white load, in addition to all of our bedding - still strong perfume odor - permeated the entire house! The night of the 5th - I crawled into bed with the sheets and pillow cases, etc., that had just been freshly washed with the Kirkland detergent, and immediately felt nauseous and started wheezing (I have mild asthma) and moved into the guest room to sleep (I felt better in about 2 hours). The next morning I walked into my bedroom where the sheets had been washed in the new detergent and immediately started coughing - left the room - went in again - started coughing more violently - and had a severe asthmatic reaction where I had to use rescue inhaler and take 2 benadryls. This rarely happens with me - maybe 3 other such reactions in 20 years. I was scared and called husband at work - he stopped by store and bought TIDE and came home to immediately start rewashing everything. Over the course of a week - my husband washed everything that had been contaminated at least 4 times before odor and residue gone. I spent the week in the guest room. My husband returned Kirkland brand to Costco and received credit, but employees didn’t seem too interested in my horrifying experience.

I bought Kirkland Signature Environmentally Friendly Laundry Detergent from a costco in La quinta, CA. After washing my clothes and wearing them the next day I developed a rash on various parts of my body. I switched back to my original detergent and rewashed my clothes and the rash/hives went away. Cost Co was more than helpful with returning the product however after doing some research I found that many other people are having a similar reaction. Below is a link to the product listing on amazon and you can see that there is at least 20 people that have left reviews of the product with a similar reaction.
