(10/30/2026) ZIPPO MANUFACTURING CO.: Zippo Manufacturing Company (“Zippo”) hereby submits this manufacturer’s comment (“Comment”) pursuant to 16 CFR § 1102.12, related to Report #20261014-1FE15-2147307872 (“Report”), which was transmitted to Zippo through the business portal on October 20, 2026. Zippo verifies that (1) it has reviewed the Report and the Comment; and (2) the information contained in this Comment is true and accurate to the best of the Zippo’s knowledge, information, and belief. Zippo requests that the CPSC publish this Comment in the CPSC database (“Database”) along with the Report, and consents to such publication in the Database.
Zippo takes seriously any reports that may relate to issues with Zippo products.
The report relates to Ronson brand butane, model CAS#75-28-5. The Report does NOT allege any injuries or property damage, and in fact specifically indicates “no injury.” The report only contains the comment “Ronson butane doesnt [sic] have Any warnings for frostbite or that you can’t let it come into contact with your skin or eyes. I was almost injured”
Zippo manufactures Ronson brand butane products (“Product”). The Product is subject to the Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA), and contains all cautionary statements required thereby (16 CFR § 1500.121).
A proper use of the Product is to refill butane lighters. The Product states on the primary display panel that it has a universal fueling tip that adapts to fill most refillable butane lighters. The Product contains fueling instructions, which state “Use only in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions” and “press the tip vertically downward into the center of the refill valve.” See attached product label rendition. In addition, the instructions provided with butane lighters (for which the butane fuel is intended to refill) must contain refilling instructions per safety standard ASTM F400 (Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Lighters) and F2201 (Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Utility Lighters), including “appropriate information to ensure the proper mating between the refill container and the fuel tank of the lighter.” See F400 section 7.6; F2201 section 7.7. The butane lighters sold by Zippo indeed contain these instructions. Adherence to these instructions for intended use should minimize any leakage of butane fuel during refilling.
Zippo has sold significant volumes of Product throughout the US for decades, and to Zippo’s knowledge, has not received complaints or reports of any incidents of this nature. When used according to instructions, the Product is safe and provides a reliable method for consumers to refill their butane lighters.
