  1. First aid

Made Feb 19, 2026, sent to the company Feb 24, 2026, published by CPSC Mar 17, 2026

The product, in the report: Heavy Duty Liquid Alkaline Commercial Dishwasher Detergent - Industrial-Grade - Dissolves Food Stains, Grease, Grime and Residue - No Pre-Rinse - Ready-to-Use 5 Gallon Pail (640-oz)

On [DATE] at approximately [TIME], I opened a newly delivered 5-gallon container of commercial heavy-duty liquid alkaline dishwasher detergent purchased through Amazon (Order #[ORDER NUMBER]).

When the cap was loosened for the first time, the sealed container unexpectedly released pressurized contents, spraying the chemical directly onto my face and lip.

The container showed no visible swelling, leakage, or damage prior to opening, and the tamper seal appeared intact. There was no warning that internal pressure had developed.

The exposure caused immediate burning pain consistent with a chemical burn. I immediately irrigated the affected skin with running water for approximately 1520 minutes. No eye exposure occurred because I was wearing glasses.

The product is a strongly alkaline detergent (approximately pH 13.9), a caustic substance capable of causing serious chemical injury. An unexpected discharge from a sealed container presents a significant risk of facial and eye injury to consumers during normal opening.

Photographs of the injuries, container, packaging, and order documentation are attached.

This incident appears to involve unintended pressurization or packaging failure of a corrosive chemical product during normal consumer handling.
