The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Dish Washing powder. Finish Powerball 27 tabs; 10.9 oz; scan code #51700 99668; zip-locked bag (with smell extremely strong even from the outside after first opening it). No obvious text about possible allergic compounds in product. Found it in text on bottom of package. Reviews on Home Depot web site about this and other dishwashing powders contain many complaints about the perfume smell and soapy taste left on dishes going back into 2023.

Used two different types of [REDACTED] dishwashing powder trying to find one that did not leave perfume smell and taste on dishes. My husband, as well, could not be in the kitchen when I opened the [REDACTED] to get a pod because he would get an asthma attack from just being in the room. We found the same trouble removing the perfume smell from Finish Powerball, the next detergent we went to to find a powder that did not leave a disgusting smell and taste on our dishes. Same experience. 4 follow-up rinses do not remove the problem. Not hard water; ensure spray arms are unimpeded; use extra hot water setting and extra scrub. Cannot be healthy if some chemical remains on our dishware that then goes into our bodies. Finish Powerball had numerous complaints about this issue on the Home Depot web site (not where I bought my package) where company did the same thing of telling each complainant to call them. I had just sent a form email to Finish just before finding the Home Depot web site showing many others having same problem. I was also trying to find a DW powder that wouldn’t inflict digestive problems with my husband: diarrhea, bloating, stomach discomfort. Repeated rinsing stopped that for [REDACTED] and Finish products! But smell and asthma still a disgusting issue. He developed troublesome digestive issues (discomfort, bloating, stomach and intestinal pains) beginning about 2 years ago that we nor the doctor could explain. I now suspect he has had some possible damage/lasting symptoms from these products. He is unwilling to have me provide his name. Did hear the rinse agents in detergents (dishes, clothing) can cause digestive problems in people. Quite concerned now.

The product, in the report: Finish brand, Jet-Dry Rinse Aid (UPC 0-51700-85555-1)

Required product information (ingredients) is not on the label. Consumer is directed to a web site [https://www.finishdishwashing.com/] which (after 5-10 minutes of searching) does not appear to have the information. I have been having some digestive issues, and I am concerned the product may contain alcohol ethoxylates (see [REDACTED] ).

  4. Emergency room

Made Sep 16, 2020, sent to the company Oct 8, 2020, published by CPSC Nov 10, 2020

The product, in the report: Finish Powerball Quantum dishwashing pods

I sent a similar write-up to the Finish Corporate Offices, but this is what happened: Monday night, 09/14/20, I was loading the dishwasher and using Finish Quantum Powerball pods.

Two of them were stuck together and when I went to pull them apart, the blue and red liquid pods burst and went into my left eye. I called my brother, who is an internal medicine doctor, and he had me rinse my eyes out immediately for about 20 minutes turning my eye in various directions.

After I did that, he had me put a patch on my eye and every 15 minutes put saline solution in it, since he wanted to get the PH level back up. After about 2 1/2 hours of that, I took the patch off and looked through my left eye - it was like driving in a deep fog. I called my provider and poison control and they recommended I go to the emergency room. While there they flushed my eye out with 3 liters of saline solution, over about a 3 hour period. There were breaks between because it was so painful to do that. I was told by the doctors there that what I had splashed in my eye was probably one of the worst things out there that could have been put into it, since it is so concentrated. Poison control told me the same thing before I went down to the hospital. They put ointment in my eye and sent me home around 3:30 a.m.

Tuesday morning, my eye was swelled shut and watering profusely, and very light sensitive. It still looked like I was looking through fog. I had an appointment with an ophthalmologist that day. He said that it appears my epithelial layer of my eye has been burned off. He does not yet know if I will have permanent damage or if the epithelial layer will eventually grow back. He told me that everyone who has this product in their household should throw it out immediately. He apparently has seen this over and over again. He and the doctors last night said that this stuff is so concentrated and alkaline, it has immediate absorption and, when kids swallow it, it burns their entire insides as it goes down and causes permanent damage.

He gave me some medicines to apply to my eye, so will see at my appointment on today (09/16/20). He said that, only then will we know if I have permanent eye damage or not. Either way, he said that this can lead to other things in the future, like glaucoma.

I had not heard anything like this in the media, so I was shocked to find out that it was such a common occurrence and so well-known when I was talking with medical professionals.

I am a licensed senior architect. They do not do well blind. My questions are this: 1. If these types of occurrences are so well known, and this product is so dangerous, then why is it on the market? 2. Why is this not more well known by the public, so they can make informed choices about whether or not to have it in their homes? 3. If this is a possibility, and the pods have a tendency to stick together with the liners that contain the blue and red liquids, then, why in the world are they not packaged individually, instead of just all being thrown in the same bag?

Hopefully I am not permanently blinded in my left eye here, but I want this on record with both the company and your agency, so that you can consider whether this product is safe enough to have in the public, without the safeguards of providing individual wrappings and having HUGE warnings on the label indicating what can happen. There is a small warning label on the package that says “CAUTION: HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED OR PUT IN MOUTH. EYE IRRITANT. DO NOT get in eyes. There is nothing that says that this can cause immediate long term damage if ingested or if splashed in eyes. Had I known how caustic and dangerous this product was, I would not have used this product and would have probably stuck with the powdered versions that are out there.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher Capsule Soap

The consumer indicates that he noticed that the dishwasher capsule soap did not completely dissolve in three different occasions and hence left a lot of residue in the machine and on the dishes and silverware.

The consumer read the back of the packaging and it stated that ingesting the product causes serious harm to consumers’ health.

The consumer plans on keeping his dishwasher capsule soap for at least the next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.

The consumer enclosed poor quality pictures of both sides of container.

The consumer will save the container and 3 soap packets for your reference if required.

What he is concerned about is a soap deposit left on forks etc that might not be observed. I saw deposits O <- This size! I have never seen that before on other soap brands!
