  1. No one hurt

Made Aug 26, 2024, sent to the company Oct 1, 2024, published by CPSC Oct 16, 2024

The product, in the report: 2lbs package of drain cleaner (flakes)

The consumer received the 2lbs. container of drain cleaner (sodium hydroxide) in a cardboard box. This cleaner is sold in the form of flakes and some of them leaked from the container and damaged the packaging. The packaging got wet somewhere in transport and the consumer noted that water can cause the contents to activate and heat up during the process. This also causes the drain cleaner to combustible.

The product was delivered to a work location and fortunately, no one was injured.

NOTE: The product was not sealed in child-resistant packaging, and there were no warning labels on the packaging.

The consumer believes that JB Tools got hold of a bulk quantity of this product and did not include warning labels when the product was shipped. Therefore, other people who purchase this product could be exposed to a similar risk.

(09/30/2024): This complaint concerns my order of a 2 lb size of Thrift Drift Drain Cleaner on Amazon, which was however shipped to me directly from JB Tools. Upon recieving and opening the package, I realized, to my alarm, that the cleaning agent - sodium hydroxide (aka lye, caustic soda), a powerful and extremely toxic, fume-producing substance whose dormant form here is small flakes that get activated by hot water- was only loosely packaged inside a cardboard box. The sodium hydroxide flakes in this package somehow had become exposed to moisture and had started to combust inside the package. Not only that, they were spilling out into the cardboard box, potentially to be touched by and unsuspecting customer, in this case me. They got on my hands but fortunately I was not injured. But such injury could easily happen to other future unsuspecting customers. Finally, there was no warning label on the package, as there is on the 1lb bottle. This is in violation of OSHA regulations.

After I conveyed all of this information to the JB Tools customer service representative on August 10, I heard nothing from them beyond a minimal and impersonal message, through Amazon, saying that they would refund my purchase and saying simply “sorry for any inconvenience.” My information was apparently not passed along to their management until I called them again and told them I’d made a complaint about them to the CPSC and that I’m also about to do so with the New York State Public Employee Safety and Health Bureau. -[REDACTED]
