Emergency room Made Nov 27, 2012, sent to the company Feb 11, 2013, published by CPSC Mar 5, 2013
The product, in the report: Grinding Wheel
Century grinding wheel 41/2” diameter, 1/16” thickness and 7/8” arbor, rated to 13,200rpm. 120lbs of air pressure, grinding is rated at 13.4 so never came near where it states wheel is rated. Safety was on at the time of incidents.
Caller’s husband has used these wheels for over 20 years but these most recently purchased, shattered into several parts while in use with pieces flying off in all directions.
The first time this happened was Friday, November 16th, 2012 or Saturday, November 17th, 2012 when a piece flew between caller’s husband and friend but was dismissed as this being one wheel that may have a defect.
Another incident happened with a different grinding wheel shattering during use Friday, November 23rd, 2012 but this time the pieces cut a groove in the palm of his hand from close to the wrist and ending under the smallest “pinkie” finger.
Caller drove her husband to the Jewish Hospital Emergency Room after finally convincing him that he needed to go for treatment.
Doctor [REDACTED] with the emergency room diagnosed his laceration, placed two stitches inside, four outside and prescribed antibiotic to prevent infection.
Callers have not contacted the manufacturer, they did contact the retailer who told them that they would contact the manufacturer.
Callers have been unable to find all the pieces but have saved the one’s that they have found. They have one that has not been used and one that has been used and shattered.
