The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. Hurt, no treatment

Made Jul 1, 2019, sent to the company Jul 25, 2019, published by CPSC Aug 8, 2019

The product, in the report: 4.5” Angle Grinder 5/8 x 11 TPI Spindle 120V

4.5” Angle Grinder from Harbor Freight the weld on the metal guard keeps breaking. This the 3 or 4th one I have bought and the guard breaks while in use. Also, there is something wrong with the internal safety mechanism. The grinder will shut off during usage and if you don’t remember to turn it off it will intermittingly turn on while hanging on tool hook or holding.

  2. First aid

Made Sep 15, 2015, sent to the company Sep 30, 2015, published by CPSC Oct 15, 2015

The product, in the report: drillmaster, 120 volt, 4 1/2” angle grinder, 10,000RPM

On 8/30/15 I was using this grinder with wire brush attachment cleaning out a tank for my boat. The auxiliary handle broke, the grinder kicked up catching me in the face and chest. The machine didn’t shut off and I had to pull the plug out of the socket to stop the machine. The handle that broke is very thin construction and may have been flawed. The on-off switch does not automatically shut off when released (as OSHA standards may require). The on-off switch is located on the motor. The motor gets hot making it hard to hold on to this tool securely. Luckily I had the wire brush on this tool and not a grinder or cutting blade. Otherwise, instead of just bruising and scrapes the blades would have cut through my cheek and chest and I might not have been able to cut it off by pulling the plug & I would have been dead. Note: Item was being used IAW owner’s manual and safety instructions. See Attachments: A, B and C.

The product, in the report: Drill master handheld die grinder bought at Harbor Freight. 41/2” angle grinder

Was beginning to grind piece of metal with a handheld drill master die grinder. The blade chipped & the grinder flew out of my hand into my ankle. It cut through tendons. This tool does not power off when it comes out of your hand. I had to reach over to turn the switch off. I had surgery Sunday evening to repair tendon after pieces of the blade were removed from my ankle. Handheld tools should all have a safety feature and should power off immediately if not being held.

  4. No one hurt

Made Jan 26, 2012, sent to the company Feb 3, 2012, published by CPSC Feb 17, 2012

The product, in the report: Angle grinder, 4 1/2 in. 120 volt 4.3 amps

Turned on new 4 1/2 inch angle grinder, which began belching very heavy acrid smoke in less than 30 seconds and prior to any load being applied. Grinder is a “drill master”, model # 95578. This was purchased from Harbor Freight Tools Co., 3491 Mission Oaks Blvd., PO Box 6009, Camarillo, CA 93011 Phone: 800-444-3353. This was purchased from the Harbor Freight outlet in Clarksville, Indiana. It was purchsed about 11/1/2011 and was first turned on Jan. 20, 2012. I do not have the receipt. The only injury was breathing the heavy smoke for several minutes as I opened doors, evacuated pets and obtained and started a fan to clear my basement work area.
