  1. Emergency room

Made Mar 23, 2021, sent to the company Mar 31, 2021, published by CPSC Apr 14, 2021

The product, in the report: Cummins 7-inch Angle Grinder No. 6761 sold by Harbor Freight Tools. Taupe in color. Not certain of age, but original owner. Model No. 6761

On 03/20/2021at approximately 2 P.M., while working on my deck at my home in Altha, Florida a safety malfunction occurred while using an angle grinder. A 7-inch angle grinder malfunctioned causing injury to my left hand and nearly caused serious life threatening injury to my left leg. Cummins made the 7-inch Angle Grinder number 6761 for sale at Harbor Freight Tools stores. The grinder is several years old, not sure of year purchased. While in a squatting position and holding the grinder with one hand, I plugged the grinder into a 110-volt extension cord. As soon as the grinder was plugged in, the grinder started at its maximum speed. The torque of the tool and the surprise of the tool starting caused the grinder to fall into my lap and caused me to fall backward onto my rear. I had a 7-inch metal cutoff blade mounted onto the grinder, which started cutting through my double layer military style pants and leg. I quickly raised my left hand up to protect myself and to push the running angle grinder from my lap. I received a deep cut to the thumb on my left hand and various small cuts and lacerations to the area between my waist to my knees. Some of the lacerations were near the femoral artery on my left leg and crotch area. This malfunction could have been deadly sense there would have been catastrophic loss of blood due to the proximity to the femoral artery and crotch, and the fact that I am on blood thinners. After returning home from receiving care at the emergency room, I examined the grinder to determine what caused the accident. Examination revealed that the button used to lock the grinder trigger in the run position was stuck in the on position. Normally if the “Lock-on” button is engaged, by squeezing the trigger the “Lock-on” button is supposed to disengage. This did not happen because the “Lock-on” button had malfunctioned and would not release. I talked to the local manager of the Harbor Freight Store on 03/22/2021. He said he could do nothing since there was no recall on these grinders and that it was older than 90 days old.
